वर्तमाने तथा रौद्रे राजन्वीरवरक्षये ।
शकुनिः सौबलः श्रीमान्पाण्डवान्समुपाद्रवत् ॥१॥

1. Saṃjaya said: O King, while such a dreadful destruction of the greatest heroes was occurring, the glorious Śakuni, son of Subala, attacked the Pāṇḍavas.
तथैव सात्वतो राजन्हार्दिक्यः परवीरहा ।
अभ्यद्रवत संग्रामे पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ॥२॥
2. tathaiva sātvato rājanhārdikyaḥ paravīrahā ,
abhyadravata saṁgrāme pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm.

2. O King, similarly, Hārdikya (Kṛtavarmā), a Sātvata and slayer of enemy heroes, attacked the army of the Pāṇḍavas in battle.
ततः काम्बोजमुख्यानां नदीजानां च वाजिनाम् ।
आरट्टानां महीजानां सिन्धुजानां च सर्वशः ॥३॥
3. tataḥ kāmbojamukhyānāṁ nadījānāṁ ca vājinām ,
āraṭṭānāṁ mahījānāṁ sindhujānāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ.

3. Then, all kinds of horses: the foremost ones from Kamboja, those bred near rivers, those from Aratta, those born on the plains, and those from Sindhu.
वनायुजानां शुभ्राणां तथा पर्वतवासिनाम् ।
ये चापरे तित्तिरजा जवना वातरंहसः ॥४॥
4. vanāyujānāṁ śubhrāṇāṁ tathā parvatavāsinām ,
ye cāpare tittirajā javanā vātaraṁhasaḥ.

ye ca apare tittirajāḥ javanāḥ vātarāṃhasaḥ

4. Also, of those born in Vanayu (Arabia), of the bright-colored ones, and of those from the mountains; and there were others, partridge-bred, exceptionally swift, and as fast as the wind.
सुवर्णालंकृतैरेतैर्वर्मवद्भिः सुकल्पितैः ।
हयैर्वातजवैर्मुख्यैः पाण्डवस्य सुतो बली ।
अभ्यवर्तत तत्सैन्यं हृष्टरूपः परंतपः ॥५॥
5. suvarṇālaṁkṛtairetairvarmavadbhiḥ sukalpitaiḥ ,
hayairvātajavairmukhyaiḥ pāṇḍavasya suto balī ,
abhyavartata tatsainyaṁ hṛṣṭarūpaḥ paraṁtapaḥ.

sukalpitaiḥ hayaiḥ vātajavaiḥ mukhyaiḥ
pāṇḍavasya sutaḥ balī abhyavartata

5. suvarṇālaṃkṛtaiḥ varmavadbhiḥ sukalpitaiḥ vātajavaiḥ mukhyaiḥ etaiḥ hayaiḥ,
pāṇḍavasya balī hṛṣṭarūpaḥ paraṃtapaḥ sutaḥ tat sainyam abhyavartata
5. Mounted on these principal horses - adorned with gold, armored, well-trained, and swift as the wind - the mighty son of Pāṇḍu, who was a tormentor of enemies and exultant in appearance, advanced towards that army.
अर्जुनस्याथ दायाद इरावान्नाम वीर्यवान् ।
सुतायां नागराजस्य जातः पार्थेन धीमता ॥६॥
6. arjunasyātha dāyāda irāvānnāma vīryavān ,
sutāyāṁ nāgarājasya jātaḥ pārthena dhīmatā.

6. Moreover, Irāvān, the valiant son of Arjuna, was born of the daughter of the Naga king through the intelligent Pārtha (Arjuna).
ऐरावतेन सा दत्ता अनपत्या महात्मना ।
पत्यौ हते सुपर्णेन कृपणा दीनचेतना ॥७॥
7. airāvatena sā dattā anapatyā mahātmanā ,
patyau hate suparṇena kṛpaṇā dīnacetanā.

7. She, childless and wretched, with a distressed mind, was given by the great-souled (ātman) Airavata after her husband had been killed by Suparna.
भार्यार्थं तां च जग्राह पार्थः कामवशानुगाम् ।
एवमेष समुत्पन्नः परक्षेत्रेऽर्जुनात्मजः ॥८॥
8. bhāryārthaṁ tāṁ ca jagrāha pārthaḥ kāmavaśānugām ,
evameṣa samutpannaḥ parakṣetre'rjunātmajaḥ.
8. bhāryārtham tām ca jagrāha pārthaḥ kāmavaśānugām
evam eṣaḥ samutpannaḥ parakṣetre arjunātmajaḥ
8. ca pārthaḥ kāmavaśānugām tām bhāryārtham jagrāha

8. And Partha (Arjuna) accepted her as his wife, she being one who followed the dictates of desire. Thus, this son of Arjuna was born in another domain.
स नागलोके संवृद्धो मात्रा च परिरक्षितः ।
पितृव्येण परित्यक्तः पार्थद्वेषाद्दुरात्मना ॥९॥
9. sa nāgaloke saṁvṛddho mātrā ca parirakṣitaḥ ,
pitṛvyeṇa parityaktaḥ pārthadveṣāddurātmanā.
9. saḥ nāgaloke saṃvṛddhaḥ mātrā ca parirakṣitaḥ
pitṛvyena parityaktaḥ pārthadveṣāt durātmanā
9. saḥ nāgaloke mātrā ca parirakṣitaḥ saṃvṛddhaḥ
durātmanā pitṛvyena pārthadveṣāt parityaktaḥ
9. He grew up in the Naga world, protected by his mother. He was abandoned by his evil-minded (ātman) uncle due to the uncle's hatred for Partha (Arjuna).
रूपवान्वीर्यसंपन्नो गुणवान्सत्यविक्रमः ।
इन्द्रलोकं जगामाशु श्रुत्वा तत्रार्जुनं गतम् ॥१०॥
10. rūpavānvīryasaṁpanno guṇavānsatyavikramaḥ ,
indralokaṁ jagāmāśu śrutvā tatrārjunaṁ gatam.
10. rūpavān vīryasampannaḥ guṇavān satyavikramaḥ
indralokam jagāma āśu śrutvā tatra arjunam gatam
10. rūpavān vīryasampannaḥ guṇavān satyavikramaḥ (saḥ)

10. Handsome, endowed with valor, virtuous, and truly valiant, he quickly went to the world of Indra, having heard that Arjuna had arrived there.
सोऽभिगम्य महात्मानं पितरं सत्यविक्रमम् ।
अभ्यवादयदव्यग्रो विनयेन कृताञ्जलिः ।
इरावानस्मि भद्रं ते पुत्रश्चाहं तवाभिभो ॥११॥
11. so'bhigamya mahātmānaṁ pitaraṁ satyavikramam ,
abhyavādayadavyagro vinayena kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
irāvānasmi bhadraṁ te putraścāhaṁ tavābhibho.
11. saḥ abhigamya mahātmānam pitaram
satyavikramam abhyavādayat avyagraḥ
vinayena kṛtāñjaliḥ irāvān asmi
bhadram te putraḥ ca aham tava abhibho
11. saḥ avyagraḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ vinayena satyavikramam
mahātmānam pitaram abhigamya abhyavādayat
[saḥ uvāca:] aham irāvān asmi te bhadram
[astu] ca abhibho aham tava putraḥ [asmi]
11. He, calm and with folded hands, humbly approached his great-souled (mahātman) father, whose valor was true, and greeted him. He said, 'I am Irāvān. May you fare well, O lord, for I am your son.'
मातुः समागमो यश्च तत्सर्वं प्रत्यवेदयत् ।
तच्च सर्वं यथावृत्तमनुसस्मार पाण्डवः ॥१२॥
12. mātuḥ samāgamo yaśca tatsarvaṁ pratyavedayat ,
tacca sarvaṁ yathāvṛttamanusasmāra pāṇḍavaḥ.
12. mātuḥ samāgamaḥ yaḥ ca tat sarvam pratyavedayat
tat ca sarvam yathāvṛttam anusasmāra pāṇḍavaḥ
12. ca yaḥ mātuḥ samāgamaḥ [āśīt],
[saḥ] tat sarvam pratyavedayat ca pāṇḍavaḥ tat sarvam yathāvṛttam anusasmāra
12. And he reported everything concerning his meeting with his mother. The Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) then remembered all that had happened exactly as it occurred.
परिष्वज्य सुतं चापि सोऽऽत्मनः सदृशं गुणैः ।
प्रीतिमानभवत्पार्थो देवराजनिवेशने ॥१३॥
13. pariṣvajya sutaṁ cāpi so''tmanaḥ sadṛśaṁ guṇaiḥ ,
prītimānabhavatpārtho devarājaniveśane.
13. pariṣvajya sutam ca api saḥ ātmanaḥ sadṛśam
guṇaiḥ prītimān abhavat pārthaḥ devarājaniveśane
13. ca api saḥ pārthaḥ ātmanaḥ guṇaiḥ sadṛśam sutam
pariṣvajya devarājaniveśane prītimān abhavat
13. And having embraced his son, who was similar to him in qualities, Pārtha (Arjuna) became filled with affection in the abode of the king of gods.
सोऽर्जुनेन समाज्ञप्तो देवलोके तदा नृप ।
प्रीतिपूर्वं महाबाहुः स्वकार्यं प्रति भारत ।
युद्धकाले त्वयास्माकं साह्यं देयमिति प्रभो ॥१४॥
14. so'rjunena samājñapto devaloke tadā nṛpa ,
prītipūrvaṁ mahābāhuḥ svakāryaṁ prati bhārata ,
yuddhakāle tvayāsmākaṁ sāhyaṁ deyamiti prabho.
14. saḥ arjunena samājñaptaḥ devaloke
tadā nṛpa prītipūrvam mahābāhuḥ
svakāryam prati bhārata yuddhakāle
tvayā asmākam sāhyam deyam iti prabho
14. nṛpa bhārata prabho tadā devaloke saḥ
mahābāhuḥ arjunena svakāryam prati
prītipūrvam samājñaptaḥ [Arjunaḥ uvāca:]
tvayā yuddhakāle asmākam sāhyam deyam iti
14. O King (nṛpa), O Bhārata, O Lord (prabho), then, in the realm of the gods, the mighty-armed Irāvān was lovingly instructed by Arjuna concerning his task: 'At the time of war, assistance must be rendered by you to us.'
बाढमित्येवमुक्त्वा च युद्धकाल उपागतः ।
कामवर्णजवैरश्वैः संवृतो बहुभिर्नृप ॥१५॥
15. bāḍhamityevamuktvā ca yuddhakāla upāgataḥ ,
kāmavarṇajavairaśvaiḥ saṁvṛto bahubhirnṛpa.
15. bāḍham iti evam uktvā ca yuddhakālaḥ upāgataḥ
kāmavarṇajavaiḥ aśvaiḥ saṃvṛtaḥ bahubhiḥ nṛpa
15. nṛpa iti evam bāḍham uktvā ca yuddhakālaḥ
upāgataḥ kāmavarṇajavaiḥ bahubhiḥ aśvaiḥ saṃvṛtaḥ
15. Having thus said, "Indeed!", the time for battle arrived. O King, he was surrounded by many horses of desired color and speed.
ते हयाः काञ्चनापीडा नानावर्णा मनोजवाः ।
उत्पेतुः सहसा राजन्हंसा इव महोदधौ ॥१६॥
16. te hayāḥ kāñcanāpīḍā nānāvarṇā manojavāḥ ,
utpetuḥ sahasā rājanhaṁsā iva mahodadhau.
16. te hayāḥ kāñcanāpīḍāḥ nānāvarṇāḥ manojavāḥ
utpetuḥ sahasā rājan haṃsāḥ iva mahodadhau
16. rājan te hayāḥ kāñcanāpīḍāḥ nānāvarṇāḥ
manojavāḥ sahasā utpetuḥ mahodadhau haṃsāḥ iva
16. O King, those horses, adorned with golden head-ornaments, of diverse colors and swift as thought, suddenly sprang up like swans in the great ocean.
ते त्वदीयान्समासाद्य हयसंघान्महाजवान् ।
क्रोडैः क्रोडानभिघ्नन्तो घोणाभिश्च परस्परम् ।
निपेतुः सहसा राजन्सुवेगाभिहता भुवि ॥१७॥
17. te tvadīyānsamāsādya hayasaṁghānmahājavān ,
kroḍaiḥ kroḍānabhighnanto ghoṇābhiśca parasparam ,
nipetuḥ sahasā rājansuvegābhihatā bhuvi.
17. te tvadīyān samāsādya hayasaṃghān
mahājavān kroḍaiḥ kroḍān abhighnantaḥ
ghoṇābhiḥ ca parasparam nipetuḥ
sahasā rājan suvegābhihatāḥ bhuvi
17. rājan te tvadīyān mahājavān hayasaṃghān
samāsādya kroḍaiḥ kroḍān
ghoṇābhiḥ ca parasparam abhighnantaḥ
sahasā suvegābhihatāḥ bhuvi nipetuḥ
17. O King, those (horses), upon reaching your very swift horse battalions and striking each other flank against flank and nose against nose, suddenly fell to the ground, overcome by their great speed.
निपतद्भिस्तथा तैश्च हयसंघैः परस्परम् ।
शुश्रुवे दारुणः शब्दः सुपर्णपतने यथा ॥१८॥
18. nipatadbhistathā taiśca hayasaṁghaiḥ parasparam ,
śuśruve dāruṇaḥ śabdaḥ suparṇapatane yathā.
18. nipatadbhiḥ tathā taiḥ ca hayasaṃghaiḥ parasparam
śuśruve dāruṇaḥ śabdaḥ suparṇapatane yathā
18. tathā taiḥ ca parasparam nipatadbhiḥ hayasaṃghaiḥ
dāruṇaḥ śabdaḥ śuśruve suparṇapatane yathā
18. And by those horse battalions falling upon each other in that manner, a terrible sound was heard, just as in the fall of Suparṇa (Garuda).
तथैव च महाराज समेत्यान्योन्यमाहवे ।
परस्परवधं घोरं चक्रुस्ते हयसादिनः ॥१९॥
19. tathaiva ca mahārāja sametyānyonyamāhave ,
parasparavadhaṁ ghoraṁ cakruste hayasādinaḥ.
19. tathā eva ca mahārāja sametya anyonyam āhave
paraspara-vadham ghoram cakruḥ te haya-sādinaḥ
19. mahārāja tathā eva ca te haya-sādinaḥ āhave
anyonyam sametya ghoram paraspara-vadham cakruḥ
19. And similarly, O great king, having met each other in battle, those horsemen engaged in a dreadful mutual slaughter.
तस्मिंस्तथा वर्तमाने संकुले तुमुले भृशम् ।
उभयोरपि संशान्ता हयसंघाः समन्ततः ॥२०॥
20. tasmiṁstathā vartamāne saṁkule tumule bhṛśam ,
ubhayorapi saṁśāntā hayasaṁghāḥ samantataḥ.
20. tasmin tathā vartamāne saṃkule tumule bhṛśam
ubhayoḥ api saṃśāntāḥ haya-saṅghāḥ samantataḥ
20. bhṛśam tumule saṃkule tathā tasmin vartamāne
ubhayoḥ api haya-saṅghāḥ samantataḥ saṃśāntāḥ
20. While such an intensely tumultuous conflict was raging, the throngs of horses on both sides were completely destroyed.
प्रक्षीणसायकाः शूरा निहताश्वाः श्रमातुराः ।
विलयं समनुप्राप्तास्तक्षमाणाः परस्परम् ॥२१॥
21. prakṣīṇasāyakāḥ śūrā nihatāśvāḥ śramāturāḥ ,
vilayaṁ samanuprāptāstakṣamāṇāḥ parasparam.
21. prākṣīṇa-sāyakāḥ śūrāḥ nihatāśvāḥ śramāturāḥ
vilayam samanuprāptāḥ takṣamāṇāḥ parasparam
21. śūrāḥ prākṣīṇa-sāyakāḥ nihatāśvāḥ śramāturāḥ
parasparam takṣamāṇāḥ vilayam samanuprāptāḥ
21. The heroic warriors, with their arrows exhausted, their horses slain, and tormented by fatigue, mutually slaughtered each other and met their end.
ततः क्षीणे हयानीके किंचिच्छेषे च भारत ।
सौबलस्यात्मजाः शूरा निर्गता रणमूर्धनि ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ kṣīṇe hayānīke kiṁciccheṣe ca bhārata ,
saubalasyātmajāḥ śūrā nirgatā raṇamūrdhani.
22. tataḥ kṣīṇe haya-anīke kiñcit-śeṣe ca bhārata
saubalasya ātmajāḥ śūrāḥ nirgatāḥ raṇa-mūrdhani
22. bhārata tataḥ haya-anīke kṣīṇe ca kiñcit-śeṣe
saubalasya ātmajāḥ śūrāḥ raṇa-mūrdhani nirgatāḥ
22. Then, O Bhārata, when the horse army was nearly exhausted with only a little remaining, the heroic sons of Subala came forth to the forefront of the battle.
वायुवेगसमस्पर्शा जवे वायुसमांस्तथा ।
आरुह्य शीलसंपन्नान्वयःस्थांस्तुरगोत्तमान् ॥२३॥
23. vāyuvegasamasparśā jave vāyusamāṁstathā ,
āruhya śīlasaṁpannānvayaḥsthāṁsturagottamān.
23. vāyu-vega-sama-sparśān jave vāyu-samān tathā
āruhya śīla-sampannān vayaḥ-sthān turaga-uttamān
23. tathā śīla-sampannān vayaḥ-sthān jave vāyu-samān
vāyu-vega-sama-sparśān turaga-uttamān āruhya
23. Mounting excellent horses that were in their prime, endowed with good nature, whose swiftness was like the touch of the wind, and whose speed was equal to the wind.
गजो गवाक्षो वृषकश्चर्मवानार्जवः शुकः ।
षडेते बलसंपन्ना निर्ययुर्महतो बलात् ॥२४॥
24. gajo gavākṣo vṛṣakaścarmavānārjavaḥ śukaḥ ,
ṣaḍete balasaṁpannā niryayurmahato balāt.
24. gajaḥ gavākṣaḥ vṛṣakaḥ carmavān ārjavaḥ śukaḥ
ṣaṭ ete bala-sampannāḥ niryayuḥ mahataḥ balāt
24. ṣaṭ ete gajaḥ gavākṣaḥ vṛṣakaḥ carmavān ārjavaḥ
śukaḥ bala-sampannāḥ mahataḥ balāt niryayuḥ
24. Gaja, Gavaksha, Vrishaka, Charmavan, Arjava, and Shuka – these six, endowed with strength, sallied forth from the mighty army.
वार्यमाणाः शकुनिना स्वैश्च योधैर्महाबलैः ।
संनद्धा युद्धकुशला रौद्ररूपा महाबलाः ॥२५॥
25. vāryamāṇāḥ śakuninā svaiśca yodhairmahābalaiḥ ,
saṁnaddhā yuddhakuśalā raudrarūpā mahābalāḥ.
25. vāryamāṇāḥ śakuninā svaiḥ ca yodhaiḥ mahābalaiḥ
sannaddhāḥ yuddha-kuśalāḥ raudra-rūpāḥ mahābalāḥ

25. Though being held back by Shakuni and their own mighty warriors, they were (nevertheless) equipped for battle, skilled in warfare, of formidable appearance, and extremely powerful.
तदनीकं महाबाहो भित्त्वा परमदुर्जयम् ।
बलेन महता युक्ताः स्वर्गाय विजयैषिणः ।
विविशुस्ते तदा हृष्टा गान्धारा युद्धदुर्मदाः ॥२६॥
26. tadanīkaṁ mahābāho bhittvā paramadurjayam ,
balena mahatā yuktāḥ svargāya vijayaiṣiṇaḥ ,
viviśuste tadā hṛṣṭā gāndhārā yuddhadurmadāḥ.
26. tat anīkam mahābāho bhittvā
parama-durjayam balena mahatā yuktāḥ
svargāya vijayaiṣiṇaḥ viviśuḥ te
tadā hṛṣṭāḥ gāndhārāḥ yuddha-durmadāḥ
26. mahābāho,
tadā te hṛṣṭāḥ yuddha-durmadāḥ vijayaiṣiṇaḥ svargāya gāndhārāḥ mahatā balena yuktāḥ parama-durjayam tat anīkam bhittvā viviśuḥ
26. O mighty-armed one, then those joyous Gandharas, fiercely intoxicated by battle and desiring victory to attain heaven, entered that exceedingly formidable army, having broken through it with great strength.
तान्प्रविष्टांस्तदा दृष्ट्वा इरावानपि वीर्यवान् ।
अब्रवीत्समरे योधान्विचित्राभरणायुधान् ॥२७॥
27. tānpraviṣṭāṁstadā dṛṣṭvā irāvānapi vīryavān ,
abravītsamare yodhānvicitrābharaṇāyudhān.
27. तान् प्रविष्टान् तदा दृष्ट्वा इरावान् अपि
वीर्यवान् अब्रवीत् समरे योधान् विचित्राभरणायुधान्
27. तदा वीर्यवान् इरावान् अपि तान् प्रविष्टान्
दृष्ट्वा समरे विचित्राभरणायुधान् योधान् अब्रवीत्
27. Then, seeing them enter, the mighty Irāvān also spoke to his warriors, who were adorned with diverse ornaments and weapons, amidst the battle.
यथैते धार्तराष्ट्रस्य योधाः सानुगवाहनाः ।
हन्यन्ते समरे सर्वे तथा नीतिर्विधीयताम् ॥२८॥
28. yathaite dhārtarāṣṭrasya yodhāḥ sānugavāhanāḥ ,
hanyante samare sarve tathā nītirvidhīyatām.
28. यथा एते धार्तराष्ट्रस्य योधाः सानुगवाहनाः
हन्यन्ते समरे सर्वे तथा नीतिः विधीयताम्
28. यथा एते धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सानुगवाहनाः सर्वे
योधाः समरे हन्यन्ते तथा नीतिः विधीयताम्
28. Let a strategy be devised so that all these warriors of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, along with their followers and vehicles, are slain in battle.
बाढमित्येवमुक्त्वा ते सर्वे योधा इरावतः ।
जघ्नुस्ते वै परानीकं दुर्जयं समरे परैः ॥२९॥
29. bāḍhamityevamuktvā te sarve yodhā irāvataḥ ,
jaghnuste vai parānīkaṁ durjayaṁ samare paraiḥ.
29. बाढम् इति एवम् उक्त्वा ते सर्वे योधाः इरावतः
जघ्नुः ते वै परानीकम् दुर्जयम् समरे परैः
29. इति एवम् बाढम् उक्त्वा ते सर्वे इरावतः योधाः
ते वै समरे परैः दुर्जयम् परानीकम् जघ्नुः
29. Having affirmed, 'Indeed, so be it!', all of Irāvān's warriors then attacked the enemy army, which was formidable for others to conquer in battle.
तदनीकमनीकेन समरे वीक्ष्य पातितम् ।
अमृष्यमाणास्ते सर्वे सुबलस्यात्मजा रणे ।
इरावन्तमभिद्रुत्य सर्वतः पर्यवारयन् ॥३०॥
30. tadanīkamanīkena samare vīkṣya pātitam ,
amṛṣyamāṇāste sarve subalasyātmajā raṇe ,
irāvantamabhidrutya sarvataḥ paryavārayan.
30. तत् अनीकम् अनीकेन समरे वीक्ष्य पातितम् अमृष्यमाणाः ते सर्वे
सुबलस्य आत्मजाः रणे इरावन्तम् अभिद्रुत्य सर्वतः पर्यवारयन्
30. समरे अनीकेन पातितम् तत् अनीकम् वीक्ष्य अमृष्यमाणाः ते सर्वे
सुबलस्य आत्मजाः रणे इरावन्तम् अभिद्रुत्य सर्वतः पर्यवारयन्
30. Seeing that their army had been struck down by another army in battle, all those sons of Subala, unable to tolerate this, rushed towards Irāvān in the conflict and surrounded him from all sides.
ताडयन्तः शितैः प्रासैश्चोदयन्तः परस्परम् ।
ते शूराः पर्यधावन्त कुर्वन्तो महदाकुलम् ॥३१॥
31. tāḍayantaḥ śitaiḥ prāsaiścodayantaḥ parasparam ,
te śūrāḥ paryadhāvanta kurvanto mahadākulam.

31. Striking with sharp spears and urging each other on, those brave warriors ran about, creating great confusion.
इरावानथ निर्भिन्नः प्रासैस्तीक्ष्णैर्महात्मभिः ।
स्रवता रुधिरेणाक्तस्तोत्त्रैर्विद्ध इव द्विपः ॥३२॥
32. irāvānatha nirbhinnaḥ prāsaistīkṣṇairmahātmabhiḥ ,
sravatā rudhireṇāktastottrairviddha iva dvipaḥ.

32. Then Irāvān, pierced by the sharp spears of great warriors, was covered in flowing blood, like an elephant struck by goads.
उरस्यपि च पृष्ठे च पार्श्वयोश्च भृशाहतः ।
एको बहुभिरत्यर्थं धैर्याद्राजन्न विव्यथे ॥३३॥
33. urasyapi ca pṛṣṭhe ca pārśvayośca bhṛśāhataḥ ,
eko bahubhiratyarthaṁ dhairyādrājanna vivyathe.
33. urasi api ca pṛṣṭhe ca pārśvayoḥ ca bhṛśa āhataḥ
ekaḥ bahubhiḥ atyartham dhairyāt rājan na vivyathe
33. rājan! urasi ca pṛṣṭhe ca pārśvayoḥ ca bhṛśa āhataḥ api,
ekaḥ (saḥ) bahubhiḥ atyartham (na vyathitaḥ) dhairyāt na vivyathe
33. Struck severely on the chest, back, and sides, he alone, O King, was not greatly distressed by many foes, due to his courage.
इरावानथ संक्रुद्धः सर्वांस्तान्निशितैः शरैः ।
मोहयामास समरे विद्ध्वा परपुरंजयः ॥३४॥
34. irāvānatha saṁkruddhaḥ sarvāṁstānniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
mohayāmāsa samare viddhvā parapuraṁjayaḥ.

34. Then Irāvān, greatly enraged and the conqueror of enemy cities, bewildered all of them in battle by striking them with sharp arrows.
प्रासानुद्धृत्य सर्वांश्च स्वशरीरादरिंदमः ।
तैरेव ताडयामास सुबलस्यात्मजान्रणे ॥३५॥
35. prāsānuddhṛtya sarvāṁśca svaśarīrādariṁdamaḥ ,
taireva tāḍayāmāsa subalasyātmajānraṇe.

35. The vanquisher of foes, having extracted all the spears from his own body, then struck the sons of Subala with those very weapons in battle.
निकृष्य निशितं खड्गं गृहीत्वा च शरावरम् ।
पदातिस्तूर्णमागच्छज्जिघांसुः सौबलान्युधि ॥३६॥
36. nikṛṣya niśitaṁ khaḍgaṁ gṛhītvā ca śarāvaram ,
padātistūrṇamāgacchajjighāṁsuḥ saubalānyudhi.

36. Having drawn a sharpened sword and taken up a quiver, he, an infantryman, swiftly advanced into battle, eager to kill the sons of Subala.
ततः प्रत्यागतप्राणाः सर्वे ते सुबलात्मजाः ।
भूयः क्रोधसमाविष्टा इरावन्तमथाद्रवन् ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ pratyāgataprāṇāḥ sarve te subalātmajāḥ ,
bhūyaḥ krodhasamāviṣṭā irāvantamathādravan.

37. Then, all those sons of Subala, whose vital breaths (prāṇa) had returned, again became filled with wrath and rushed towards Irāvat.
इरावानपि खड्गेन दर्शयन्पाणिलाघवम् ।
अभ्यवर्तत तान्सर्वान्सौबलान्बलदर्पितः ॥३८॥
38. irāvānapi khaḍgena darśayanpāṇilāghavam ,
abhyavartata tānsarvānsaubalānbaladarpitaḥ.

38. Irāvat, for his part, proud of his strength and demonstrating his hand's dexterity with his sword, attacked all those sons of Subala.
लाघवेनाथ चरतः सर्वे ते सुबलात्मजाः ।
अन्तरं नाध्यगच्छन्त चरन्तः शीघ्रगामिनः ॥३९॥
39. lāghavenātha carataḥ sarve te subalātmajāḥ ,
antaraṁ nādhyagacchanta carantaḥ śīghragāminaḥ.

39. All those sons of Subala, moving with agility and swiftness, were unable to find an opening.
भूमिष्ठमथ तं संख्ये संप्रदृश्य ततः पुनः ।
परिवार्य भृशं सर्वे ग्रहीतुमुपचक्रमुः ॥४०॥
40. bhūmiṣṭhamatha taṁ saṁkhye saṁpradṛśya tataḥ punaḥ ,
parivārya bhṛśaṁ sarve grahītumupacakramuḥ.
40. bhūmiṣṭham atha tam saṅkhye saṃpradṛśya tataḥ
punaḥ parivārya bhṛśam sarve grahītum upacakramuḥ

40. Then, having clearly seen him standing on the ground in the battle, all of them again intensely surrounded him and began to capture him.
अथाभ्याशगतानां स खड्गेनामित्रकर्शनः ।
उपहस्तावहस्ताभ्यां तेषां गात्राण्यकृन्तत ॥४१॥
41. athābhyāśagatānāṁ sa khaḍgenāmitrakarśanaḥ ,
upahastāvahastābhyāṁ teṣāṁ gātrāṇyakṛntata.
41. atha abhyāśagatānām sa khaḍgena amitrakarśanaḥ
upahastāvahastābhyām teṣām gātrāṇi akṛntata
41. atha saḥ amitrakarśanaḥ khaḍgena abhyāśagatānām

41. Then, that destroyer of enemies, with his sword, severed the forearms and hands from the limbs of those who had approached him.
आयुधानि च सर्वेषां बाहूनपि च भूषितान् ।
अपतन्त निकृत्ताङ्गा गता भूमिं गतासवः ॥४२॥
42. āyudhāni ca sarveṣāṁ bāhūnapi ca bhūṣitān ,
apatanta nikṛttāṅgā gatā bhūmiṁ gatāsavaḥ.
42. āyudhāni ca sarveṣām bāhūn api ca bhūṣitān
apatanta nikṛttāṅgā gatā bhūmim gatāsavaḥ
42. sarveṣām āyudhāni ca bhūṣitān bāhūn api ca
(te) nikṛttāṅgā gatā bhūmim gatāsavaḥ apatanta
42. And the weapons of all, as well as their adorned arms, fell. With severed limbs, they had gone to the ground, their lives departed.
वृषकस्तु महाराज बहुधा परिविक्षतः ।
अमुच्यत महारौद्रात्तस्माद्वीरावकर्तनात् ॥४३॥
43. vṛṣakastu mahārāja bahudhā parivikṣataḥ ,
amucyata mahāraudrāttasmādvīrāvakartanāt.
43. vṛṣakaḥ tu mahārāja bahudhā parivikṣataḥ
amucyata mahāraudrāt tasmāt vīrāvakartanāt

43. O great king, Vṛṣaka, though wounded repeatedly in many ways, was indeed freed from that terribly fierce slaughter of heroes.
तान्सर्वान्पतितान्दृष्ट्वा भीतो दुर्योधनस्ततः ।
अभ्यभाषत संक्रुद्धो राक्षसं घोरदर्शनम् ॥४४॥
44. tānsarvānpatitāndṛṣṭvā bhīto duryodhanastataḥ ,
abhyabhāṣata saṁkruddho rākṣasaṁ ghoradarśanam.
44. tān sarvān patitān dṛṣṭvā bhītaḥ duryodhanaḥ tataḥ
abhyabhāṣata saṃkruddhaḥ rākṣasam ghoradarśanam

44. Then, Duryodhana, frightened and enraged upon seeing all of them fallen, spoke to the Rākṣasa of terrifying appearance.
आर्श्यशृङ्गिं महेष्वासं मायाविनमरिंदमम् ।
वैरिणं भीमसेनस्य पूर्वं बकवधेन वै ॥४५॥
45. ārśyaśṛṅgiṁ maheṣvāsaṁ māyāvinamariṁdamam ,
vairiṇaṁ bhīmasenasya pūrvaṁ bakavadhena vai.
45. ārśyaśṛṅgim maheṣvāsam māyāvinam ariṃdamam
vairiṇam bhīmasenasya pūrvam bakavadhena vai

45. (He spoke to) the great archer, the illusionist (māyāvin), the subduer of enemies, who was a son of Ṛśyaśṛṅga and formerly, indeed, an enemy of Bhīmasena due to the slaying of Baka.
पश्य वीर यथा ह्येष फल्गुनस्य सुतो बली ।
मायावी विप्रियं घोरमकार्षीन्मे बलक्षयम् ॥४६॥
46. paśya vīra yathā hyeṣa phalgunasya suto balī ,
māyāvī vipriyaṁ ghoramakārṣīnme balakṣayam.
46. paśya vīra yathā hi eṣaḥ phalgunasya sutaḥ balī
māyāvī vipriyam ghoram akārṣīt me balakṣayam
46. vīra paśya yathā hi eṣaḥ phalgunasya balī māyāvī

46. Behold, O hero, how this powerful son of Phalguna (Arjuna), the illusionist (māyāvin), has indeed wrought a terrible and grievous destruction of my army.
त्वं च कामगमस्तात मायास्त्रे च विशारदः ।
कृतवैरश्च पार्थेन तस्मादेनं रणे जहि ॥४७॥
47. tvaṁ ca kāmagamastāta māyāstre ca viśāradaḥ ,
kṛtavairaśca pārthena tasmādenaṁ raṇe jahi.
47. tvam ca kāmagamaḥ tāta māyāstre ca viśāradaḥ
kṛtavairaḥ ca pārhena tasmāt enam raṇe jahi

47. My dear, you possess the ability to move at will and are skilled in illusion-weapons (māyāstra). Furthermore, you have incurred enmity with Arjuna (Pārtha); therefore, slay him in battle.
बाढमित्येवमुक्त्वा तु राक्षसो घोरदर्शनः ।
प्रययौ सिंहनादेन यत्रार्जुनसुतो युवा ॥४८॥
48. bāḍhamityevamuktvā tu rākṣaso ghoradarśanaḥ ,
prayayau siṁhanādena yatrārjunasuto yuvā.
48. bāḍham iti evam uktvā tu rākṣasaḥ ghoradarśanaḥ
prayayau siṃhanādena yatra arjunasutaḥ yuvā

48. Having thus said, 'Certainly!', the demon of dreadful appearance advanced with a lion's roar to where Arjuna's young son was.
स्वारूढैर्युद्धकुशलैर्विमलप्रासयोधिभिः ।
वीरैः प्रहारिभिर्युक्तः स्वैरनीकैः समावृतः ।
निहन्तुकामः समरे इरावन्तं महाबलम् ॥४९॥
49. svārūḍhairyuddhakuśalairvimalaprāsayodhibhiḥ ,
vīraiḥ prahāribhiryuktaḥ svairanīkaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ ,
nihantukāmaḥ samare irāvantaṁ mahābalam.
49. svārūḍhaiḥ yuddhakusalaiḥ
vimalaprāsayodhibhiḥ vīraiḥ prahāribhiḥ
yuktaḥ svaiḥ anīkaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ

49. Accompanied by heroic warriors, well-mounted, skilled in combat, and fighting with shining spears, and surrounded by his own forces, he (the demon) was eager to slay the greatly powerful Irāvat in battle.
इरावानपि संक्रुद्धस्त्वरमाणः पराक्रमी ।
हन्तुकामममित्रघ्नो राक्षसं प्रत्यवारयत् ॥५०॥
50. irāvānapi saṁkruddhastvaramāṇaḥ parākramī ,
hantukāmamamitraghno rākṣasaṁ pratyavārayat.

50. Irāvat, who was also greatly enraged, hastening, and valorous - the slayer of enemies - countered the demon who was desirous of killing him.
तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य राक्षसः सुमहाबलः ।
त्वरमाणस्ततो मायां प्रयोक्तुमुपचक्रमे ॥५१॥
51. tamāpatantaṁ saṁprekṣya rākṣasaḥ sumahābalaḥ ,
tvaramāṇastato māyāṁ prayoktumupacakrame.
51. tam āpatantam samprekṣya rākṣasaḥ sumahābalaḥ
tvaramāṇaḥ tataḥ māyām prayoktum upacakrame
51. sumahābalaḥ rākṣasaḥ tam āpatantam samprekṣya

51. When the extremely powerful demon (rākṣasa) saw him approaching, he quickly began to employ an illusion (māyā).
तेन मायामयाः कॢप्ता हयास्तावन्त एव हि ।
स्वारूढा राक्षसैर्घोरैः शूलपट्टिशपाणिभिः ॥५२॥
52. tena māyāmayāḥ kḷptā hayāstāvanta eva hi ,
svārūḍhā rākṣasairghoraiḥ śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇibhiḥ.
52. tena māyāmayāḥ kḷptāḥ hayāḥ tāvantaḥ eva hi
svārūḍhāḥ rākṣasaiḥ ghoraiḥ śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇibhiḥ
52. hi tena tāvantaḥ eva māyāmayāḥ hayāḥ kḷptāḥ
ghoraiḥ śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇibhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ svārūḍhāḥ
52. Indeed, by him, an equal number of illusory horses were created, mounted by fierce demons (rākṣasas) who held spears and battle-axes in their hands.
ते संरब्धाः समागम्य द्विसाहस्राः प्रहारिणः ।
अचिराद्गमयामासुः प्रेतलोकं परस्परम् ॥५३॥
53. te saṁrabdhāḥ samāgamya dvisāhasrāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
acirādgamayāmāsuḥ pretalokaṁ parasparam.
53. te saṃrabdhāḥ samāgamya dvisāhasrāḥ prahāriṇaḥ
acirāt gamayāmāsuḥ pretalokam parasparam
53. te dvisāhasrāḥ saṃrabdhāḥ prahāriṇaḥ parasparam

53. Those two thousand enraged attackers, having encountered each other, quickly sent one another to the world of the dead (pretaloka).
तस्मिंस्तु निहते सैन्ये तावुभौ युद्धदुर्मदौ ।
संग्रामे व्यवतिष्ठेतां यथा वै वृत्रवासवौ ॥५४॥
54. tasmiṁstu nihate sainye tāvubhau yuddhadurmadau ,
saṁgrāme vyavatiṣṭhetāṁ yathā vai vṛtravāsavau.
54. tasmin tu nihate sainye tau ubhau yuddhadurmadau
saṃgrāme vyavatiṣṭhetām yathā vai vṛtravāsavau
54. tu tasmin sainye nihate tau ubhau yuddhadurmadau
yathā vai vṛtravāsavau saṃgrāme vyavatiṣṭhetām
54. But when that army was slain, those two, both fiercely intoxicated with battle, engaged in combat, just like Vṛtra and Vāsava (Indra).
आद्रवन्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य राक्षसं युद्धदुर्मदम् ।
इरावान्क्रोधसंरब्धः प्रत्यधावन्महाबलः ॥५५॥
55. ādravantamabhiprekṣya rākṣasaṁ yuddhadurmadam ,
irāvānkrodhasaṁrabdhaḥ pratyadhāvanmahābalaḥ.

irāvān krodhasaṃrabdhaḥ pratyadhāvan mahābalaḥ

55. Seeing the demon, intoxicated by battle, rushing towards him, the immensely powerful Iravan, inflamed with anger, charged back.
समभ्याशगतस्याजौ तस्य खड्गेन दुर्मतेः ।
चिच्छेद कार्मुकं दीप्तं शरावापं च पञ्चकम् ॥५६॥
56. samabhyāśagatasyājau tasya khaḍgena durmateḥ ,
ciccheda kārmukaṁ dīptaṁ śarāvāpaṁ ca pañcakam.

56. ājau [irāvān] khaḍgena samabhyāśagatasya durmateḥ

56. In that battle, with his sword, Iravan cut the shining bow and five arrows of that evil-minded demon who had come very close.
स निकृत्तं धनुर्दृष्ट्वा खं जवेन समाविशत् ।
इरावन्तमभिक्रुद्धं मोहयन्निव मायया ॥५७॥
57. sa nikṛttaṁ dhanurdṛṣṭvā khaṁ javena samāviśat ,
irāvantamabhikruddhaṁ mohayanniva māyayā.
57. sa nikṛttam dhanuḥ dṛṣṭvā kham javena samāviśat
irāvantam abhikruddham mohayan iva māyayā
57. sa [rākṣasaḥ] nikṛttam dhanuḥ dṛṣṭvā abhikruddham

57. Seeing his bow cut, that demon swiftly entered the sky, as if bewildering the enraged Iravan with his illusion (māyā).
ततोऽन्तरिक्षमुत्पत्य इरावानपि राक्षसम् ।
विमोहयित्वा मायाभिस्तस्य गात्राणि सायकैः ।
चिच्छेद सर्वमर्मज्ञः कामरूपो दुरासदः ॥५८॥
58. tato'ntarikṣamutpatya irāvānapi rākṣasam ,
vimohayitvā māyābhistasya gātrāṇi sāyakaiḥ ,
ciccheda sarvamarmajñaḥ kāmarūpo durāsadaḥ.

58. Then, Iravan also, having flown up into the sky and bewildered the demon with his illusions (māyā), cut his limbs with arrows. Iravan was one who knew all vital points, could assume any form at will, and was difficult to overcome.
तथा स राक्षसश्रेष्ठः शरैः कृत्तः पुनः पुनः ।
संबभूव महाराज समवाप च यौवनम् ॥५९॥
59. tathā sa rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ śaraiḥ kṛttaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
saṁbabhūva mahārāja samavāpa ca yauvanam.

59. O great king, even though that chief of demons was repeatedly wounded by arrows, he would regenerate and regain his youth.
माया हि सहजा तेषां वयो रूपं च कामजम् ।
एवं तद्राक्षसस्याङ्गं छिन्नं छिन्नं व्यरोहत ॥६०॥
60. māyā hi sahajā teṣāṁ vayo rūpaṁ ca kāmajam ,
evaṁ tadrākṣasasyāṅgaṁ chinnaṁ chinnaṁ vyarohata.
60. māyā hi sahajā teṣām vayaḥ rūpam ca kāmajam evam
tat rākṣasasya aṅgam chinnam chinnam vyarohata
60. hi teṣām māyā sahajā ca vayaḥ rūpam kāmajam evam

60. Indeed, a supernatural power (māyā) is innate to them, and their age and form are assumed at will. In this way, that demon's body, even when repeatedly severed, would grow back.
इरावानपि संक्रुद्धो राक्षसं तं महाबलम् ।
परश्वधेन तीक्ष्णेन चिच्छेद च पुनः पुनः ॥६१॥
61. irāvānapi saṁkruddho rākṣasaṁ taṁ mahābalam ,
paraśvadhena tīkṣṇena ciccheda ca punaḥ punaḥ.

61. Irāvān, greatly enraged, repeatedly cut that extremely powerful demon with a sharp axe.
स तेन बलिना वीरश्छिद्यमान इव द्रुमः ।
राक्षसो व्यनदद्घोरं स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ॥६२॥
62. sa tena balinā vīraśchidyamāna iva drumaḥ ,
rākṣaso vyanadadghoraṁ sa śabdastumulo'bhavat.
62. saḥ tena balinā vīraḥ chidyamānaḥ iva drumaḥ
rākṣasaḥ vyanadat ghoram saḥ śabdaḥ tumulaḥ abhavat
62. saḥ vīraḥ rākṣasaḥ tena balinā drumaḥ iva chidyamānaḥ

62. That demon, a mighty one, being cut by that powerful Irāvān as if he were a tree, roared terribly. That sound became tumultuous.
परश्वधक्षतं रक्षः सुस्राव रुधिरं बहु ।
ततश्चुक्रोध बलवांश्चक्रे वेगं च संयुगे ॥६३॥
63. paraśvadhakṣataṁ rakṣaḥ susrāva rudhiraṁ bahu ,
tataścukrodha balavāṁścakre vegaṁ ca saṁyuge.
63. parashvadhakṣatam rakṣaḥ susrāva rudhiram bahu
tataḥ cukrodha balavān cakre vegam ca saṃyuge

63. The demon (rakṣas), wounded by the axe, profusely bled much blood. Then the mighty one became enraged and exerted force in battle.
आर्श्यशृङ्गिस्ततो दृष्ट्वा समरे शत्रुमूर्जितम् ।
कृत्वा घोरं महद्रूपं ग्रहीतुमुपचक्रमे ।
संग्रामशिरसो मध्ये सर्वेषां तत्र पश्यताम् ॥६४॥
64. ārśyaśṛṅgistato dṛṣṭvā samare śatrumūrjitam ,
kṛtvā ghoraṁ mahadrūpaṁ grahītumupacakrame ,
saṁgrāmaśiraso madhye sarveṣāṁ tatra paśyatām.
64. ārśyaśṛṅgiḥ tataḥ dṛṣṭvā samare
śatrum ūrjitam kṛtvā ghoram mahat
rūpam grahītum upacakrame saṃgrāmaśirasaḥ

64. Then Ārśyaśṛṅgi, seeing the mighty enemy in battle, began to assume a terrible, enormous form in order to seize him, right in the thick of the combat, as all present watched.
तां दृष्ट्वा तादृशीं मायां राक्षसस्य महात्मनः ।
इरावानपि संक्रुद्धो मायां स्रष्टुं प्रचक्रमे ॥६५॥
65. tāṁ dṛṣṭvā tādṛśīṁ māyāṁ rākṣasasya mahātmanaḥ ,
irāvānapi saṁkruddho māyāṁ sraṣṭuṁ pracakrame.
65. tām dṛṣṭvā tādṛśīm māyām rākṣasasya mahātmanaḥ
irāvān api saṃkruddhaḥ māyām sraṣṭum pracakrame

65. Seeing that kind of illusion (māyā) from the mighty rākṣasa (demon), Irāvān also became greatly enraged and began to project his own illusion (māyā).
तस्य क्रोधाभिभूतस्य संयुगेष्वनिवर्तिनः ।
योऽन्वयो मातृकस्तस्य स एनमभिपेदिवान् ॥६६॥
66. tasya krodhābhibhūtasya saṁyugeṣvanivartinaḥ ,
yo'nvayo mātṛkastasya sa enamabhipedivān.

yaḥ anvayaḥ mātṛkaḥ tasya saḥ enam abhipedivān

66. He who belonged to Irāvān's maternal lineage came upon that one (the rākṣasa) who was overcome by wrath and unyielding in battles.
स नागैर्बहुशो राजन्सर्वतः संवृतो रणे ।
दधार सुमहद्रूपमनन्त इव भोगवान् ।
ततो बहुविधैर्नागैश्छादयामास राक्षसम् ॥६७॥
67. sa nāgairbahuśo rājansarvataḥ saṁvṛto raṇe ,
dadhāra sumahadrūpamananta iva bhogavān ,
tato bahuvidhairnāgaiśchādayāmāsa rākṣasam.

saṃvṛtaḥ raṇe dadhāra sumahat rūpam
anantaḥ iva bhogavān tataḥ

67. rājan,
raṇe nāgaiḥ bahuśaḥ sarvataḥ saṃvṛtaḥ saḥ anantaḥ bhogavān iva sumahat rūpam dadhāra.
tataḥ bahuvidhaiḥ nāgaiḥ rākṣasam chādayāmāsa.
67. O king, surrounded on all sides by many serpents in battle, he assumed a very great form, like Ananta, the hooded one. Then, he covered the demon with various serpents.
छाद्यमानस्तु नागैः स ध्यात्वा राक्षसपुंगवः ।
सौपर्णं रूपमास्थाय भक्षयामास पन्नगान् ॥६८॥
68. chādyamānastu nāgaiḥ sa dhyātvā rākṣasapuṁgavaḥ ,
sauparṇaṁ rūpamāsthāya bhakṣayāmāsa pannagān.
68. chādyamānaḥ tu nāgaiḥ saḥ dhyātvā rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ
sauparṇam rūpam āsthāya bhakṣayāmāsa pannagān
68. tu nāgaiḥ chādyamānaḥ saḥ rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ dhyātvā sauparṇam rūpam āsthāya pannagān bhakṣayāmāsa.
68. But that chief of demons (rākṣasapuṅgava), being covered by serpents, meditated, and then assuming a Garuda-like form, devoured the serpents.
मायया भक्षिते तस्मिन्नन्वये तस्य मातृके ।
विमोहितमिरावन्तमसिना राक्षसोऽवधीत् ॥६९॥
69. māyayā bhakṣite tasminnanvaye tasya mātṛke ,
vimohitamirāvantamasinā rākṣaso'vadhīt.

vimohitam irāvantam asinā rākṣasaḥ avadhīt

69. When that maternal lineage of his (the serpents) had been devoured by means of illusion (māyā), the demon killed the bewildered Irāvan with a sword.
सकुण्डलं समुकुटं पद्मेन्दुसदृशप्रभम् ।
इरावतः शिरो रक्षः पातयामास भूतले ॥७०॥
70. sakuṇḍalaṁ samukuṭaṁ padmendusadṛśaprabham ,
irāvataḥ śiro rakṣaḥ pātayāmāsa bhūtale.

70. The demon caused Irāvan's head, which was adorned with earrings and a crown and shone like a lotus and the moon, to fall to the ground.
तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीरे राक्षसेनार्जुनात्मजे ।
विशोकाः समपद्यन्त धार्तराष्ट्राः सराजकाः ॥७१॥
71. tasmiṁstu nihate vīre rākṣasenārjunātmaje ,
viśokāḥ samapadyanta dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ sarājakāḥ.
71. tasmin tu nihate vīre rākṣasena arjunātmaje
viśokāḥ samapadyanta dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ sarājakāḥ
71. tu tasmin vīre arjunātmaje rākṣasena nihate

71. However, when that heroic son of Arjuna was slain by the rākṣasa, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, accompanied by their kings, became free from grief.
तस्मिन्महति संग्रामे तादृशे भैरवे पुनः ।
महान्व्यतिकरो घोरः सेनयोः समपद्यत ॥७२॥
72. tasminmahati saṁgrāme tādṛśe bhairave punaḥ ,
mahānvyatikaro ghoraḥ senayoḥ samapadyata.

72. Furthermore, in that great and dreadful battle, a massive and terrible calamity occurred between the two armies.
हया गजाः पदाताश्च विमिश्रा दन्तिभिर्हताः ।
रथाश्च दन्तिनश्चैव पत्तिभिस्तत्र सूदिताः ॥७३॥
73. hayā gajāḥ padātāśca vimiśrā dantibhirhatāḥ ,
rathāśca dantinaścaiva pattibhistatra sūditāḥ.

73. Horses, elephants, and infantry, all intermingled, were slain by elephants. And there, chariots and elephants were destroyed by the infantry.
तथा पत्तिरथौघाश्च हयाश्च बहवो रणे ।
रथिभिर्निहता राजंस्तव तेषां च संकुले ॥७४॥
74. tathā pattirathaughāśca hayāśca bahavo raṇe ,
rathibhirnihatā rājaṁstava teṣāṁ ca saṁkule.

74. Thus, O King, in that chaotic battle between your forces and theirs, vast numbers of infantry, chariots, and many horses were slain by the charioteers.
अजानन्नर्जुनश्चापि निहतं पुत्रमौरसम् ।
जघान समरे शूरान्राज्ञस्तान्भीष्मरक्षिणः ॥७५॥
75. ajānannarjunaścāpi nihataṁ putramaurasam ,
jaghāna samare śūrānrājñastānbhīṣmarakṣiṇaḥ.
75. ajānan arjunaḥ ca api nihataṃ putram aurasam
jaghāna samare śūrān rājñaḥ tān bhīṣmarakṣiṇaḥ

75. Arjuna, not knowing that his own legitimate son had been slain, also killed those brave kings who were protectors of Bhishma in battle.
तथैव तावका राजन्सृञ्जयाश्च महाबलाः ।
जुह्वतः समरे प्राणान्निजघ्नुरितरेतरम् ॥७६॥
76. tathaiva tāvakā rājansṛñjayāśca mahābalāḥ ,
juhvataḥ samare prāṇānnijaghnuritaretaram.
76. tathā eva tāvakāḥ rājan sṛñjayāḥ ca mahābalāḥ
juhvataḥ samare prāṇān nijaghnuḥ itaretaram

76. Similarly, O king, your mighty men and the mighty Srnjayas, sacrificing their lives in battle, killed each other.
मुक्तकेशा विकवचा विरथाश्छिन्नकार्मुकाः ।
बाहुभिः समयुध्यन्त समवेताः परस्परम् ॥७७॥
77. muktakeśā vikavacā virathāśchinnakārmukāḥ ,
bāhubhiḥ samayudhyanta samavetāḥ parasparam.

77. With loosened hair, without armor, dismounted from their chariots, and with broken bows, they gathered together and fought each other with their arms.
तथा मर्मातिगैर्भीष्मो निजघान महारथान् ।
कम्पयन्समरे सेनां पाण्डवानां महाबलः ॥७८॥
78. tathā marmātigairbhīṣmo nijaghāna mahārathān ,
kampayansamare senāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ mahābalaḥ.

78. Thus, the greatly powerful Bhishma, shaking the Pandava army in battle, slew the great warriors with arrows that pierced their vital parts.
तेन यौधिष्ठिरे सैन्ये बहवो मानवा हताः ।
दन्तिनः सादिनश्चैव रथिनोऽथ हयास्तथा ॥७९॥
79. tena yaudhiṣṭhire sainye bahavo mānavā hatāḥ ,
dantinaḥ sādinaścaiva rathino'tha hayāstathā.

dantinaḥ sādinaḥ ca eva rathinaḥ atha hayāḥ tathā

79. By him, many men were slain in Yudhishthira's army, as were elephants, cavalrymen, charioteers, and horses.
तत्र भारत भीष्मस्य रणे दृष्ट्वा पराक्रमम् ।
अत्यद्भुतमपश्याम शक्रस्येव पराक्रमम् ॥८०॥
80. tatra bhārata bhīṣmasya raṇe dṛṣṭvā parākramam ,
atyadbhutamapaśyāma śakrasyeva parākramam.

80. O Bhārata, in that battle, having seen Bhishma's exceedingly wonderful valor, we witnessed prowess like that of Indra.
तथैव भीमसेनस्य पार्षतस्य च भारत ।
रौद्रमासीत्तदा युद्धं सात्वतस्य च धन्विनः ॥८१॥
81. tathaiva bhīmasenasya pārṣatasya ca bhārata ,
raudramāsīttadā yuddhaṁ sātvatasya ca dhanvinaḥ.

raudram āsīt tadā yuddham sātvatasya ca dhanvinaḥ

81. O Bhārata, similarly, at that time, the battle was dreadful due to Bhimasena, Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), and the archer Sātvata (Satyaki).
दृष्ट्वा द्रोणस्य विक्रान्तं पाण्डवान्भयमाविशत् ।
एक एव रणे शक्तो हन्तुमस्मान्ससैनिकान् ॥८२॥
82. dṛṣṭvā droṇasya vikrāntaṁ pāṇḍavānbhayamāviśat ,
eka eva raṇe śakto hantumasmānsasainikān.

82. Upon witnessing Drona's valor, fear overcame the Pāṇḍavas, [as they realized] "He alone is capable in battle of slaying us along with our soldiers."
किं पुनः पृथिवीशूरैर्योधव्रातैः समावृतः ।
इत्यब्रुवन्महाराज रणे द्रोणेन पीडिताः ॥८३॥
83. kiṁ punaḥ pṛthivīśūrairyodhavrātaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ ,
ityabruvanmahārāja raṇe droṇena pīḍitāḥ.
83. kim punaḥ pṛthivīśūraiḥ yodhavrātaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ
iti abruvan mahārāja raṇe droṇena pīḍitāḥ
83. mahārāja kim punaḥ पृथिवीशूरैः योधव्रातैः samāvṛtaḥ
(kaścit) (asau) iti rane droṇena pīḍitāḥ (te) abruvan
83. O great king, what more can be said (about the plight of anyone) who is surrounded by throngs of earth's heroes (warriors)? Thus spoke those who were tormented by Droṇa in battle.
वर्तमाने तथा रौद्रे संग्रामे भरतर्षभ ।
उभयोः सेनयोः शूरा नामृष्यन्त परस्परम् ॥८४॥
84. vartamāne tathā raudre saṁgrāme bharatarṣabha ,
ubhayoḥ senayoḥ śūrā nāmṛṣyanta parasparam.

84. As that fierce battle raged on, O best of Bharatas, the brave warriors from both armies could not tolerate each other.
आविष्टा इव युध्यन्ते रक्षोभूता महाबलाः ।
तावकाः पाण्डवेयाश्च संरब्धास्तात धन्विनः ॥८५॥
85. āviṣṭā iva yudhyante rakṣobhūtā mahābalāḥ ,
tāvakāḥ pāṇḍaveyāśca saṁrabdhāstāta dhanvinaḥ.
85. āviṣṭāḥ iva yudhyante rakṣobhūtāḥ mahābalāḥ
tāvakāḥ pāṇḍaveyāḥ ca saṃrabdhāḥ tāta dhanvinaḥ

85. O dear one (tāta), your men and the sons of Pāṇḍu, mighty and enraged archers, fight as if possessed and transformed into Rākṣasas.
न स्म पश्यामहे कंचिद्यः प्राणान्परिरक्षति ।
संग्रामे दैत्यसंकाशे तस्मिन्योद्धा नराधिप ॥८६॥
86. na sma paśyāmahe kaṁcidyaḥ prāṇānparirakṣati ,
saṁgrāme daityasaṁkāśe tasminyoddhā narādhipa.
86. na sma paśyāmahe kañcit yaḥ prāṇān parirakṣati
saṅgrāme daityasaṅkāśe tasmin yodhā narādhipa
86. narādhipa tasmins daityasaṅkāśe saṅgrāme yaḥ
prāṇān parirakṣati kañcit yodhā na sma paśyāmahe
86. O lord of men, in that battle as dreadful as a demonic (daitya) conflict, we did not see any warrior protecting their life.
