वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः प्रयान्तं कौन्तेयं ब्राह्मणा वनवासिनः ।
अभिगम्य तदा राजन्निदं वचनमब्रुवन् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ prayāntaṁ kaunteyaṁ brāhmaṇā vanavāsinaḥ ,
abhigamya tadā rājannidaṁ vacanamabruvan.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, O King Janamejaya, the Brāhmaṇas dwelling in the forest approached the departing son of Kunti (Yudhiṣṭhira) and spoke these words.
राजंस्तीर्थानि गन्तासि पुण्यानि भ्रातृभिः सह ।
देवर्षिणा च सहितो लोमशेन महात्मना ॥२॥
2. rājaṁstīrthāni gantāsi puṇyāni bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ,
devarṣiṇā ca sahito lomaśena mahātmanā.
2. rājan tīrthāni gantā asi puṇyāni bhrātṛbhiḥ
saha devarṣiṇā ca sahitaḥ lomaśena mahātmanā
2. O King Yudhiṣṭhira, you will go to sacred holy places (tīrtha) with your brothers, and you will be accompanied by the great-souled divine sage (devarṣi) Lomaśa.
अस्मानपि महाराज नेतुमर्हसि पाण्डव ।
अस्माभिर्हि न शक्यानि त्वदृते तानि कौरव ॥३॥
3. asmānapi mahārāja netumarhasi pāṇḍava ,
asmābhirhi na śakyāni tvadṛte tāni kaurava.
3. asmān api mahārāja netum arhasi pāṇḍava |
asmābhiḥ hi na śakyāni tvat ṛte tāni kaurava
3. O great king, son of Pāṇḍu, you should also lead us. Indeed, O scion of Kuru, those (places) are not possible for us to reach without you.
श्वापदैरुपसृष्टानि दुर्गाणि विषमाणि च ।
अगम्यानि नरैरल्पैस्तीर्थानि मनुजेश्वर ॥४॥
4. śvāpadairupasṛṣṭāni durgāṇi viṣamāṇi ca ,
agamyāni narairalpaistīrthāni manujeśvara.
4. śvāpadaiḥ upasṛṣṭāni durgāṇi viṣamāṇi ca |
agamyāni naraiḥ alpaiḥ tīrthāni manujeśvara
4. O lord of men, there are difficult and perilous places, infested by wild animals, and pilgrimage (tīrtha) sites that are inaccessible to weak men.
भवन्तो भ्रातरः शूरा धनुर्धरवराः सदा ।
भवद्भिः पालिताः शूरैर्गच्छेम वयमप्युत ॥५॥
5. bhavanto bhrātaraḥ śūrā dhanurdharavarāḥ sadā ,
bhavadbhiḥ pālitāḥ śūrairgacchema vayamapyuta.
5. bhavantaḥ bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ dhanurdharavarāḥ sadā |
bhavadbhiḥ pālitāḥ śūraiḥ gacchema vayam api uta
5. You are always brave brothers and excellent archers. Protected by you, the brave ones, we too would go (to those places).
भवत्प्रसादाद्धि वयं प्राप्नुयाम फलं शुभम् ।
तीर्थानां पृथिवीपाल व्रतानां च विशां पते ॥६॥
6. bhavatprasādāddhi vayaṁ prāpnuyāma phalaṁ śubham ,
tīrthānāṁ pṛthivīpāla vratānāṁ ca viśāṁ pate.
6. bhavatprasādāt hi vayam prāpnuyāma phalam śubham
| tīrthānām pṛthivīpāla vratānām ca viśām pate
6. Indeed, O protector of the earth, O lord of the people, by your grace we would obtain the auspicious fruit of both pilgrimages (tīrtha) and observances (vrata).
तव वीर्यपरित्राताः शुद्धास्तीर्थपरिप्लुताः ।
भवेम धूतपाप्मानस्तीर्थसंदर्शनान्नृप ॥७॥
7. tava vīryaparitrātāḥ śuddhāstīrthapariplutāḥ ,
bhavema dhūtapāpmānastīrthasaṁdarśanānnṛpa.
7. tava vīryaparitrātāḥ śuddhāḥ tīrthapariprutāḥ
bhavema dhūtapāpmānaḥ tīrthasaṃdarśanāt nṛpa
7. O King, may we become purified, cleansed of sins, protected by your valor, and sanctified by bathing in sacred waters (tīrthas) and by the mere sight of holy places (tīrthas).
भवानपि नरेन्द्रस्य कार्तवीर्यस्य भारत ।
अष्टकस्य च राजर्षेर्लोमपादस्य चैव ह ॥८॥
8. bhavānapi narendrasya kārtavīryasya bhārata ,
aṣṭakasya ca rājarṣerlomapādasya caiva ha.
8. bhavān api narendrasya kārtavīryasya bhārata
aṣṭakasya ca rājarṣeḥ lomapādasya ca eva ha
8. O Bhārata, you also (will attain the worlds) of King Kārtavīrya, and of the royal sage Aṣṭaka, and indeed of Lomapāda.
भरतस्य च वीरस्य सार्वभौमस्य पार्थिव ।
ध्रुवं प्राप्स्यसि दुष्प्रापाँल्लोकांस्तीर्थपरिप्लुतः ॥९॥
9. bharatasya ca vīrasya sārvabhaumasya pārthiva ,
dhruvaṁ prāpsyasi duṣprāpāँllokāṁstīrthapariplutaḥ.
9. bharatasya ca vīrasya sārvabhaumasya pārthiva
dhruvam prāpsyasi duṣprāpān lokān tīrthapariprutaḥ
9. O King, you will certainly attain those worlds, difficult to reach, which were attained by the hero and universal monarch Bharata. You will achieve this by being bathed in sacred waters (tīrthas).
प्रभासादीनि तीर्थानि महेन्द्रादींश्च पर्वतान् ।
गङ्गाद्याः सरितश्चैव प्लक्षादींश्च वनस्पतीन् ।
त्वया सह महीपाल द्रष्टुमिच्छामहे वयम् ॥१०॥
10. prabhāsādīni tīrthāni mahendrādīṁśca parvatān ,
gaṅgādyāḥ saritaścaiva plakṣādīṁśca vanaspatīn ,
tvayā saha mahīpāla draṣṭumicchāmahe vayam.
10. prabhāsādīni tīrthāni mahendrādīn
ca parvatān gaṅgādyāḥ saritaḥ ca
eva plakṣādīn ca vanaspatīn tvayā
saha mahīpāla draṣṭum icchāmahe vayam
10. O King, we wish to see with you sacred places (tīrthas) such as Prabhāsa, mountains like Mahendra, rivers like Gaṅgā, and indeed trees such as Plakṣa.
यदि ते ब्राह्मणेष्वस्ति काचित्प्रीतिर्जनाधिप ।
कुरु क्षिप्रं वचोऽस्माकं ततः श्रेयोऽभिपत्स्यसे ॥११॥
11. yadi te brāhmaṇeṣvasti kācitprītirjanādhipa ,
kuru kṣipraṁ vaco'smākaṁ tataḥ śreyo'bhipatsyase.
11. yadi te brāhmaṇeṣu asti kācit prītiḥ janādhipa kuru
kṣipram vacaḥ asmākam tataḥ śreyaḥ abhipatsyase
11. O king, if you have any regard for Brahmins, then quickly follow our words. By doing so, you will attain great welfare.
तीर्थानि हि महाबाहो तपोविघ्नकरैः सदा ।
अनुकीर्णानि रक्षोभिस्तेभ्यो नस्त्रातुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. tīrthāni hi mahābāho tapovighnakaraiḥ sadā ,
anukīrṇāni rakṣobhistebhyo nastrātumarhasi.
12. tīrthāni hi mahābāho tapas-vighnakaraiḥ sadā
anukīrṇāni rakṣobhiḥ tebhyaḥ naḥ trātum arhasi
12. Indeed, O mighty-armed one, the holy places are always swarming with Rākṣasas who create obstacles to asceticism (tapas). You ought to protect us from them.
तीर्थान्युक्तानि धौम्येन नारदेन च धीमता ।
यान्युवाच च देवर्षिर्लोमशः सुमहातपाः ॥१३॥
13. tīrthānyuktāni dhaumyena nāradena ca dhīmatā ,
yānyuvāca ca devarṣirlomaśaḥ sumahātapāḥ.
13. tīrthāni uktāni dhaumyena nāradena ca dhīmatā
yāni uvāca ca devarṣiḥ lomaśaḥ su-mahā-tapāḥ
13. These are the holy places which were mentioned by Dhaumya and by the intelligent Nārada, and which the divine sage Lomaśa, of immense asceticism (tapas), also spoke of.
विधिवत्तानि सर्वाणि पर्यटस्व नराधिप ।
धूतपाप्मा सहास्माभिर्लोमशेन च पालितः ॥१४॥
14. vidhivattāni sarvāṇi paryaṭasva narādhipa ,
dhūtapāpmā sahāsmābhirlomaśena ca pālitaḥ.
14. vidhivat tāni sarvāṇi paryaṭasva narādhipa
dhūta-pāpmā saha asmābhiḥ lomaśena ca pālitaḥ
14. O ruler of men, traverse all those holy places properly, accompanied by us and protected by Lomaśa, thereby purifying yourself of all sins.
स तथा पूज्यमानस्तैर्हर्षादश्रुपरिप्लुतः ।
भीमसेनादिभिर्वीरैर्भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ।
बाढमित्यब्रवीत्सर्वांस्तानृषीन्पाण्डवर्षभः ॥१५॥
15. sa tathā pūjyamānastairharṣādaśrupariplutaḥ ,
bhīmasenādibhirvīrairbhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ ,
bāḍhamityabravītsarvāṁstānṛṣīnpāṇḍavarṣabhaḥ.
15. saḥ tathā pūjyamānaḥ taiḥ harṣāt
aśrupariplutaḥ bhīmasenādibhiḥ vīraiḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ bāḍham iti
abravīt sarvān tān ṛṣīn pāṇḍavarṣabhaḥ
15. Being thus honored by them, and bathed in tears of joy (harṣa), he, the chief of the Pāṇḍavas (Pāṇḍavarṣabha), surrounded by his heroic brothers including Bhīmasena, said "very well" to all those sages (ṛṣi).
लोमशं समनुज्ञाप्य धौम्यं चैव पुरोहितम् ।
ततः स पाण्डवश्रेष्ठो भ्रातृभिः सहितो वशी ।
द्रौपद्या चानवद्याङ्ग्या गमनाय मनो दधे ॥१६॥
16. lomaśaṁ samanujñāpya dhaumyaṁ caiva purohitam ,
tataḥ sa pāṇḍavaśreṣṭho bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito vaśī ,
draupadyā cānavadyāṅgyā gamanāya mano dadhe.
16. lomaśam samanu_jñāpya dhaumyam ca eva
purohitam tataḥ saḥ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ vaśī draupadyā
ca anavadyāṅgyā gamanāya manaḥ dadhe
16. After taking leave of Lomaśa and their priest (purohita) Dhaumya, that self-controlled (vaśī) best of the Pāṇḍavas (Pāṇavaśreṣṭha), accompanied by his brothers and Draupadī, whose limbs were flawless, then resolved to depart.
अथ व्यासो महाभागस्तथा नारदपर्वतौ ।
काम्यके पाण्डवं द्रष्टुं समाजग्मुर्मनीषिणः ॥१७॥
17. atha vyāso mahābhāgastathā nāradaparvatau ,
kāmyake pāṇḍavaṁ draṣṭuṁ samājagmurmanīṣiṇaḥ.
17. atha vyāsaḥ mahābhāgaḥ tathā nāradaparvatau
kāmyake pāṇḍavam draṣṭum samājagmuḥ manīṣiṇaḥ
17. Then, the greatly fortunate (mahābhāga) Vyāsa, and also the wise sages (manīṣin) Nārada and Parvata, came together to Kāmyaka to see the Pāṇḍava.
तेषां युधिष्ठिरो राजा पूजां चक्रे यथाविधि ।
सत्कृतास्ते महाभागा युधिष्ठिरमथाब्रुवन् ॥१८॥
18. teṣāṁ yudhiṣṭhiro rājā pūjāṁ cakre yathāvidhi ,
satkṛtāste mahābhāgā yudhiṣṭhiramathābruvan.
18. teṣām yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā pūjām cakre yathāvidhi
satkṛtāḥ te mahābhāgāḥ yudhiṣṭhiram atha abruvan
18. King Yudhiṣṭhira performed their welcome (pūjā) according to the prescribed rituals (yathāvidhi). Being honored, those greatly fortunate ones (mahābhāga) then spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira.
युधिष्ठिर यमौ भीम मनसा कुरुतार्जवम् ।
मनसा कृतशौचा वै शुद्धास्तीर्थानि गच्छत ॥१९॥
19. yudhiṣṭhira yamau bhīma manasā kurutārjavam ,
manasā kṛtaśaucā vai śuddhāstīrthāni gacchata.
19. yudhiṣṭhira yamau bhīma manasā kuruta ārjavam
manasā kṛtaśaucāḥ vai śuddhāḥ tīrthāni gacchata
19. Yudhiṣṭhira, Nakula and Sahadeva, and Bhīma, cultivate integrity with your minds. Indeed, you who are purified and made pure by the mind, go to the holy places.
शरीरनियमं ह्याहुर्ब्राह्मणा मानुषं व्रतम् ।
मनोविशुद्धां बुद्धिं च दैवमाहुर्व्रतं द्विजाः ॥२०॥
20. śarīraniyamaṁ hyāhurbrāhmaṇā mānuṣaṁ vratam ,
manoviśuddhāṁ buddhiṁ ca daivamāhurvrataṁ dvijāḥ.
20. śarīraniyamam hi āhuḥ brāhmaṇāḥ mānuṣam vratam
manoviśuddhām buddhim ca daivam āhuḥ vratam dvijāḥ
20. Indeed, Brahmins declare physical discipline to be a human observance. And the twice-born declare a mind-purified intellect to be a divine observance.
मनो ह्यदुष्टं शूराणां पर्याप्तं वै नराधिप ।
मैत्रीं बुद्धिं समास्थाय शुद्धास्तीर्थानि गच्छत ॥२१॥
21. mano hyaduṣṭaṁ śūrāṇāṁ paryāptaṁ vai narādhipa ,
maitrīṁ buddhiṁ samāsthāya śuddhāstīrthāni gacchata.
21. manaḥ hi aduṣṭam śūrāṇām paryāptam vai narādhipa
maitrīm buddhim samāsthāya śuddhāḥ tīrthāni gacchata
21. Indeed, O ruler of men, an uncorrupted mind is certainly sufficient for heroes. Having adopted an intellect characterized by friendliness, you pure ones should go to the holy places.
ते यूयं मानसैः शुद्धाः शरीरनियमव्रतैः ।
दैवं व्रतं समास्थाय यथोक्तं फलमाप्स्यथ ॥२२॥
22. te yūyaṁ mānasaiḥ śuddhāḥ śarīraniyamavrataiḥ ,
daivaṁ vrataṁ samāsthāya yathoktaṁ phalamāpsyatha.
22. te yūyam mānasaiḥ śuddhāḥ śarīraniyamavrataiḥ daivam
vratam samāsthāya yathā uktam phalam āpsyatha
22. Therefore, all of you, having become pure through mental and physical observances, and having adopted the divine observance, will achieve the result as described.
ते तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय कृष्णया सह पाण्डवाः ।
कृतस्वस्त्ययनाः सर्वे मुनिभिर्दिव्यमानुषैः ॥२३॥
23. te tatheti pratijñāya kṛṣṇayā saha pāṇḍavāḥ ,
kṛtasvastyayanāḥ sarve munibhirdivyamānuṣaiḥ.
23. te tathā iti pratijñāya kṛṣṇayā saha pāṇḍavāḥ
kṛtasvastyayanāḥ sarve munibhiḥ divyamānuṣaiḥ
23. All the Pāṇḍavas, having agreed to it, and having performed auspicious rites with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) and with the divine and human sages,
लोमशस्योपसंगृह्य पादौ द्वैपायनस्य च ।
नारदस्य च राजेन्द्र देवर्षेः पर्वतस्य च ॥२४॥
24. lomaśasyopasaṁgṛhya pādau dvaipāyanasya ca ,
nāradasya ca rājendra devarṣeḥ parvatasya ca.
24. lomaśasya upasaṃgṛhya pādau dvaipāyanasya ca
nāradasya ca rājendra devarṣeḥ parvatasya ca
24. O King, they clasped the feet of Lomaśa, and of Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa), and of Nārada, and of the divine sage Parvata,
धौम्येन सहिता वीरास्तथान्यैर्वनवासिभिः ।
मार्गशीर्ष्यामतीतायां पुष्येण प्रययुस्ततः ॥२५॥
25. dhaumyena sahitā vīrāstathānyairvanavāsibhiḥ ,
mārgaśīrṣyāmatītāyāṁ puṣyeṇa prayayustataḥ.
25. dhaumyena sahitāḥ vīrāḥ tathā anyaiḥ vanavāsibhiḥ
mārgaśīrṣyām atītāyām puṣyeṇa prayayuḥ tataḥ
25. Accompanied by Dhaumya and other forest dwellers, the heroes then departed from there, auspiciously at the time of the Puṣya constellation, after the full moon of Mārgaśīrṣa had passed.
कठिनानि समादाय चीराजिनजटाधराः ।
अभेद्यैः कवचैर्युक्तास्तीर्थान्यन्वचरंस्तदा ॥२६॥
26. kaṭhināni samādāya cīrājinajaṭādharāḥ ,
abhedyaiḥ kavacairyuktāstīrthānyanvacaraṁstadā.
26. kaṭhināni samādāya cīrājinajaṭādharāḥ abhedyaiḥ
kavacaiḥ yuktāḥ tīrthāni anvacaran tadā
26. Then, having taken up rough garments, wearing bark clothes, deerskins, and matted locks, and equipped with impenetrable armors, they visited the holy places.
इन्द्रसेनादिभिर्भृत्यै रथैः परिचतुर्दशैः ।
महानसव्यापृतैश्च तथान्यैः परिचारकैः ॥२७॥
27. indrasenādibhirbhṛtyai rathaiḥ paricaturdaśaiḥ ,
mahānasavyāpṛtaiśca tathānyaiḥ paricārakaiḥ.
27. indrasenādibhiḥ bhṛtyaiḥ rathaiḥ paricaturdaśaiḥ
mahānasavyāpṛtaiḥ ca tathā anyaiḥ paricārakaiḥ
27. Accompanied by servants like Indrasena and others, along with fourteen chariots, and similarly by those engaged in the kitchen, as well as other attendants.
सायुधा बद्धनिस्त्रिंशास्तूणवन्तः समार्गणाः ।
प्राङ्मुखाः प्रययुर्वीराः पाण्डवा जनमेजय ॥२८॥
28. sāyudhā baddhanistriṁśāstūṇavantaḥ samārgaṇāḥ ,
prāṅmukhāḥ prayayurvīrāḥ pāṇḍavā janamejaya.
28. sāyudhāḥ baddhanistriṃśāḥ tūṇavantaḥ samārgaṇāḥ
prāṅmukhāḥ prayayuḥ vīrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ janamejaya
28. O Janamejaya, the heroic Pandavas, armed with weapons, with their swords fastened, carrying quivers and arrows, set forth facing east.
