वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तान्यनीकान्यदृश्यन्त कुरूणामुग्रधन्विनाम् ।
संसर्पन्तो यथा मेघा घर्मान्ते मन्दमारुताः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tānyanīkānyadṛśyanta kurūṇāmugradhanvinām ,
saṁsarpanto yathā meghā gharmānte mandamārutāḥ.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tāni anīkāni adṛśyanta kurūṇām
ugradhanvinām saṃsarpantaḥ yathā meghāḥ gharmānte mandamārutāḥ
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: The armies of those Kuru warriors, fierce with their bows, were seen advancing like clouds moved by gentle breezes at the end of the hot season.
अभ्याशे वाजिनस्तस्थुः समारूढाः प्रहारिभिः ।
भीमरूपाश्च मातङ्गास्तोमराङ्कुशचोदिताः ॥२॥
2. abhyāśe vājinastasthuḥ samārūḍhāḥ prahāribhiḥ ,
bhīmarūpāśca mātaṅgāstomarāṅkuśacoditāḥ.
2. abhyāśe vājinaḥ tasthuḥ samārūḍhāḥ prahāribhiḥ
bhīmarūpāḥ ca mātaṅgāḥ tomarāṅkuśacoditāḥ
2. Mounted by warriors, horses stood nearby, and fierce-looking elephants, spurred on by lances and goads, were also present.
ततः शक्रः सुरगणैः समारुह्य सुदर्शनम् ।
सहोपायात्तदा राजन्विश्वाश्विमरुतां गणैः ॥३॥
3. tataḥ śakraḥ suragaṇaiḥ samāruhya sudarśanam ,
sahopāyāttadā rājanviśvāśvimarutāṁ gaṇaiḥ.
3. tataḥ śakraḥ suragaṇaiḥ samāruhya sudarśanam
saha upāyāt tadā rājan viśvāśvimarutām gaṇaiḥ
3. Then, O king, Indra, accompanied by the hosts of gods and having mounted Sudarśana, arrived along with the hosts of Viśvas, Aśvins, and Maruts.
तद्देवयक्षगन्धर्वमहोरगसमाकुलम् ।
शुशुभेऽभ्रविनिर्मुक्तं ग्रहैरिव नभस्तलम् ॥४॥
4. taddevayakṣagandharvamahoragasamākulam ,
śuśubhe'bhravinirmuktaṁ grahairiva nabhastalam.
4. tat devayakṣagandharvamahoragasamākulam śuśubhe
abhravinirmuktam grahaiḥ iva nabhastalam
4. That expanse, crowded with gods, yakshas, gandharvas, and great serpents, shone splendidly, just like a cloudless sky illuminated by planets.
अस्त्राणां च बलं तेषां मानुषेषु प्रयुज्यताम् ।
तच्च घोरं महद्युद्धं भीष्मार्जुनसमागमे ॥५॥
5. astrāṇāṁ ca balaṁ teṣāṁ mānuṣeṣu prayujyatām ,
tacca ghoraṁ mahadyuddhaṁ bhīṣmārjunasamāgame.
5. astrāṇām ca balam teṣām mānuṣeṣu prayujyatām
tat ca ghoram mahat yuddham bhīṣmārjunasamāgame
5. And let the power of their celestial weapons be employed against humans. That great and terrible battle occurred at the encounter of Bhishma and Arjuna.
शतं शतसहस्राणां यत्र स्थूणा हिरण्मयाः ।
मणिरत्नमयाश्चान्याः प्रासादमुपधारयन् ॥६॥
6. śataṁ śatasahasrāṇāṁ yatra sthūṇā hiraṇmayāḥ ,
maṇiratnamayāścānyāḥ prāsādamupadhārayan.
6. śatam śatasahasrāṇām yatra sthūṇāḥ hiraṇmayāḥ
maṇiratnamayāḥ ca anyāḥ prāsādam upadhārayan
6. Where millions of golden pillars, and other pillars adorned with jewels and gems, supported the palace.
तत्र कामगमं दिव्यं सर्वरत्नविभूषितम् ।
विमानं देवराजस्य शुशुभे खेचरं तदा ॥७॥
7. tatra kāmagamaṁ divyaṁ sarvaratnavibhūṣitam ,
vimānaṁ devarājasya śuśubhe khecaraṁ tadā.
7. tatra kāmagamam divyam sarvaratnavibhūṣitam
vimānam devarājasya śuśubhe khecaram tadā
7. There, at that time, the divine aerial car (vimāna) of the king of gods, which was adorned with all jewels and could move wherever desired, shone brilliantly.
तत्र देवास्त्रयस्त्रिंशत्तिष्ठन्ति सहवासवाः ।
गन्धर्वा राक्षसाः सर्पाः पितरश्च महर्षिभिः ॥८॥
8. tatra devāstrayastriṁśattiṣṭhanti sahavāsavāḥ ,
gandharvā rākṣasāḥ sarpāḥ pitaraśca maharṣibhiḥ.
8. tatra devāḥ trayastriṃśat tiṣṭhanti sahavāsavāḥ
gandharvāḥ rākṣasāḥ sarpāḥ pitaraḥ ca maharṣibhiḥ
8. There reside the thirty-three gods along with Indra, as well as Gandharvas, Rakshasas, Serpents, and the Pitṛs (ancestors) with the great sages.
तथा राजा वसुमना बलाक्षः सुप्रतर्दनः ।
अष्टकश्च शिबिश्चैव ययातिर्नहुषो गयः ॥९॥
9. tathā rājā vasumanā balākṣaḥ supratardanaḥ ,
aṣṭakaśca śibiścaiva yayātirnahuṣo gayaḥ.
9. tathā rājā vasumanāḥ balākṣaḥ supratardanaḥ
aṣṭakaḥ ca śibiḥ ca eva yayātiḥ nahuṣaḥ gayaḥ
9. And similarly, King Vasumanas, Balākṣa, Supratardana, and also Aṣṭaka, Śibi, Yayāti, Nahuṣa, and Gaya were present.
मनुः क्षुपो रघुर्भानुः कृशाश्वः सगरः शलः ।
विमाने देवराजस्य समदृश्यन्त सुप्रभाः ॥१०॥
10. manuḥ kṣupo raghurbhānuḥ kṛśāśvaḥ sagaraḥ śalaḥ ,
vimāne devarājasya samadṛśyanta suprabhāḥ.
10. manuḥ kṣupaḥ raghuḥ bhānuḥ kṛśāśvaḥ sagaraḥ
śalaḥ vimāne devarājasya samadṛśyanta suprabhāḥ
10. Manu, Kṣupa, Raghu, Bhānu, Kṛśāśva, Sagara, and Śala appeared exceedingly radiant in the aerial chariot (vimāna) of the king of gods (devarāja).
अग्नेरीशस्य सोमस्य वरुणस्य प्रजापतेः ।
तथा धातुर्विधातुश्च कुबेरस्य यमस्य च ॥११॥
11. agnerīśasya somasya varuṇasya prajāpateḥ ,
tathā dhāturvidhātuśca kuberasya yamasya ca.
11. agneḥ īśasya somasya varuṇasya prajāpateḥ
tathā dhātuḥ vidhātuḥ ca kuberasya yamasya ca
11. (Similarly, the aerial chariots) of Agni, Īśa, Soma, Varuṇa, Prajāpati, and also of Dhātṛ, Vidhātṛ, Kubera, and Yama (shone).
अलम्बुसोग्रसेनस्य गन्धर्वस्य च तुम्बुरोः ।
यथाभागं यथोद्देशं विमानानि चकाशिरे ॥१२॥
12. alambusograsenasya gandharvasya ca tumburoḥ ,
yathābhāgaṁ yathoddeśaṁ vimānāni cakāśire.
12. alambuṣaugrasenasya gandharvasya ca tumburoḥ
yathābhāgam yathoddeśam vimānāni cakāśire
12. The aerial chariots (vimānas) of Alambuṣa and Ugrasena, and of the gandharva Tumburu, shone according to their respective shares and designated places.
सर्वदेवनिकायाश्च सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।
अर्जुनस्य कुरूणां च द्रष्टुं युद्धमुपागताः ॥१३॥
13. sarvadevanikāyāśca siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ ,
arjunasya kurūṇāṁ ca draṣṭuṁ yuddhamupāgatāḥ.
13. sarvadevanikāyāḥ ca siddhāḥ ca paramarṣayaḥ
arjunasya kurūṇām ca draṣṭum yuddham upāgatāḥ
13. And all the hosts of gods, the perfected beings (siddhas), and the great sages (paramarṣis) arrived to witness the battle between Arjuna and the Kurus.
दिव्यानां तत्र माल्यानां गन्धः पुण्योऽथ सर्वशः ।
प्रससार वसन्ताग्रे वनानामिव पुष्पताम् ॥१४॥
14. divyānāṁ tatra mālyānāṁ gandhaḥ puṇyo'tha sarvaśaḥ ,
prasasāra vasantāgre vanānāmiva puṣpatām.
14. divyānām tatra mālyānām gandhaḥ puṇyaḥ atha
sarvaśaḥ prasasāra vasantāgre vanānām iva puṣpatām
14. There, the sacred fragrance of divine garlands spread everywhere, just as the blossoming of forests does at the onset of spring.
रक्तारक्तानि देवानां समदृश्यन्त तिष्ठताम् ।
आतपत्राणि वासांसि स्रजश्च व्यजनानि च ॥१५॥
15. raktāraktāni devānāṁ samadṛśyanta tiṣṭhatām ,
ātapatrāṇi vāsāṁsi srajaśca vyajanāni ca.
15. raktāraktāni devānām samadṛśyanta tiṣṭhatām
ātatpatrāṇi vāsāṃsi srajaḥ ca vyajanāni ca
15. The variously red parasols, garments, garlands, and fans of the gods who were standing there were seen.
उपशाम्यद्रजो भौमं सर्वं व्याप्तं मरीचिभिः ।
दिव्यान्गन्धानुपादाय वायुर्योधानसेवत ॥१६॥
16. upaśāmyadrajo bhaumaṁ sarvaṁ vyāptaṁ marīcibhiḥ ,
divyāngandhānupādāya vāyuryodhānasevata.
16. upaśāmyat rajaḥ bhaumam sarvam vyāptam marīcibhiḥ
divyān gandhān upādāya vāyuḥ yodhān asevata
16. All the earthly dust was subsiding, pervaded by rays. The wind, carrying divine fragrances, attended to the warriors.
प्रभासितमिवाकाशं चित्ररूपमलंकृतम् ।
संपतद्भिः स्थितैश्चैव नानारत्नावभासितैः ।
विमानैर्विविधैश्चित्रैरुपानीतैः सुरोत्तमैः ॥१७॥
17. prabhāsitamivākāśaṁ citrarūpamalaṁkṛtam ,
saṁpatadbhiḥ sthitaiścaiva nānāratnāvabhāsitaiḥ ,
vimānairvividhaiścitrairupānītaiḥ surottamaiḥ.
17. prabhāsitam iva ākāśam citrarūpam
alaṅkṛtam saṃpatadbhiḥ sthitaiḥ ca
eva nānāratnāvabhāsitaiḥ vimānaiḥ
vividhaiḥ citraiḥ upānītaiḥ surottamaiḥ
17. The sky appeared as if illuminated, adorned with diverse forms, by the flying and stationary celestial cars. These celestial cars, of various kinds and brilliant, were illuminated by diverse jewels and were brought by the best of the gods.
