वैशंपायन उवाच ।
संपूज्याथाभ्यनुज्ञातो महर्षेर्वचनात्परम् ।
प्रत्युवाचानुपूर्व्येण धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
saṁpūjyāthābhyanujñāto maharṣervacanātparam ,
pratyuvācānupūrvyeṇa dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
1. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca saṃpūjya atha abhyanujñātaḥ maharṣeḥ
vacanāt param pratyuvāca ānupūrvyena dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having paid due respect and then received permission, after the great sage (maharṣi) had concluded his words, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharmarāja), replied in due order.
भगवन्न्याय्यमाहैतं यथावद्धर्मनिश्चयम् ।
यथाशक्ति यथान्यायं क्रियतेऽयं विधिर्मया ॥२॥
2. bhagavannyāyyamāhaitaṁ yathāvaddharmaniścayam ,
yathāśakti yathānyāyaṁ kriyate'yaṁ vidhirmayā.
2. bhagavan nyāyyam āha etam yathāvat dharmaniscayam
yathāśakti yathānyāyam kriyate ayam vidhiḥ mayā
2. O Lord, this determination of natural law (dharma) has been declared appropriately. This injunction is being performed by me according to my capacity and according to what is just.
राजभिर्यद्यथा कार्यं पुरा तत्तन्न संशयः ।
यथान्यायोपनीतार्थं कृतं हेतुमदर्थवत् ॥३॥
3. rājabhiryadyathā kāryaṁ purā tattanna saṁśayaḥ ,
yathānyāyopanītārthaṁ kṛtaṁ hetumadarthavat.
3. rājabhiḥ yat yathā kāryam purā tat tat na saṃśayaḥ
yathānyāyopanītārtham kṛtam hetumat arthavat
3. Whatever had to be done by kings in the past, there is no doubt that it was indeed done. It was performed with its purpose established according to justice, and it was both reasonable and meaningful.
वयं तु सत्पथं तेषां यातुमिच्छामहे प्रभो ।
न तु शक्यं तथा गन्तुं यथा तैर्नियतात्मभिः ॥४॥
4. vayaṁ tu satpathaṁ teṣāṁ yātumicchāmahe prabho ,
na tu śakyaṁ tathā gantuṁ yathā tairniyatātmabhiḥ.
4. vayam tu satpatham teṣām yātum icchāmahe prabho |
na tu śakyam tathā gantum yathā taiḥ niyatātmabhiḥ
4. But O Lord, we indeed wish to follow their righteous path. However, it is not possible for us to proceed in the same manner as those with controlled selves (ātman).
एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा वाक्यं तदभिपूज्य च ।
मुहूर्तात्प्राप्तकालं च दृष्ट्वा लोकचरं मुनिम् ॥५॥
5. evamuktvā sa dharmātmā vākyaṁ tadabhipūjya ca ,
muhūrtātprāptakālaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā lokacaraṁ munim.
5. evam uktvā saḥ dharmātmā vākyam tat abhipūjya ca
muhūrtāt prāptakālam ca dṛṣṭvā lokacaram munim
5. Having spoken thus, that righteous individual (dharmātmā), after honoring that statement, and perceiving the sage (muni) who traverses the worlds and had arrived at an opportune moment within a short time...
नारदं स्वस्थमासीनमुपासीनो युधिष्ठिरः ।
अपृच्छत्पाण्डवस्तत्र राजमध्ये महामतिः ॥६॥
6. nāradaṁ svasthamāsīnamupāsīno yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
apṛcchatpāṇḍavastatra rājamadhye mahāmatiḥ.
6. nāradam svastham āsīnam upāsīnaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
apṛcchat pāṇḍavaḥ tatra rājamadhye mahāmatiḥ
6. Yudhiṣṭhira, the great-minded (mahāmatiḥ) Pāṇḍava, attended upon Nārada, who was comfortably seated, and then questioned him there amidst the kings.
भवान्संचरते लोकान्सदा नानाविधान्बहून् ।
ब्रह्मणा निर्मितान्पूर्वं प्रेक्षमाणो मनोजवः ॥७॥
7. bhavānsaṁcarate lokānsadā nānāvidhānbahūn ,
brahmaṇā nirmitānpūrvaṁ prekṣamāṇo manojavaḥ.
7. bhavān saṃcarate lokān sadā nānāvidhān bahūn
brahmaṇā nirmitān pūrvam prekṣamāṇaḥ manojavḥ
7. Your honor (bhavān) always travels through many diverse worlds, which were created long ago by Brahmā, observing them with a mind swift as thought (manojavḥ).
ईदृशी भवता काचिद्दृष्टपूर्वा सभा क्वचित् ।
इतो वा श्रेयसी ब्रह्मंस्तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ॥८॥
8. īdṛśī bhavatā kāciddṛṣṭapūrvā sabhā kvacit ,
ito vā śreyasī brahmaṁstanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ.
8. īdṛśī bhavatā kācit dṛṣṭapūrvā sabhā kvacit itaḥ
vā śreyasī brahman tat mama ācakṣva pṛcchataḥ
8. O Brahmin, have you ever seen such an assembly (sabhā) before, or one superior to this, anywhere? Please tell me, as I am asking.
तच्छ्रुत्वा नारदस्तस्य धर्मराजस्य भाषितम् ।
पाण्डवं प्रत्युवाचेदं स्मयन्मधुरया गिरा ॥९॥
9. tacchrutvā nāradastasya dharmarājasya bhāṣitam ,
pāṇḍavaṁ pratyuvācedaṁ smayanmadhurayā girā.
9. tat śrutvā nāradaḥ tasya dharmarājasya bhāṣitam
pāṇḍavam prati uvāca idam smayan madhurayā girā
9. Having heard that speech from Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharmarāja), Nārada, smiling, spoke these words to the Pāṇḍava in a sweet voice.
मानुषेषु न मे तात दृष्टपूर्वा न च श्रुता ।
सभा मणिमयी राजन्यथेयं तव भारत ॥१०॥
10. mānuṣeṣu na me tāta dṛṣṭapūrvā na ca śrutā ,
sabhā maṇimayī rājanyatheyaṁ tava bhārata.
10. mānuṣeṣu na me tāta dṛṣṭapūrvā na ca śrutā
sabhā maṇimayī rājan yathā iyam tava bhārata
10. O dear one, O King, O Bhārata, among humans, I have neither seen nor heard of a jeweled assembly (sabhā) like this one of yours.
सभां तु पितृराजस्य वरुणस्य च धीमतः ।
कथयिष्ये तथेन्द्रस्य कैलासनिलयस्य च ॥११॥
11. sabhāṁ tu pitṛrājasya varuṇasya ca dhīmataḥ ,
kathayiṣye tathendrasya kailāsanilayasya ca.
11. sabhām tu pitṛrājasya varuṇasya ca dhīmataḥ
kathayiṣye tathā indrasya kailāsanilayasya ca
11. Indeed, I will describe the assembly of Yama, and of the wise Varuna, and similarly that of Indra, and of Kubera, who resides on Kailasa.
ब्रह्मणश्च सभां दिव्यां कथयिष्ये गतक्लमाम् ।
यदि ते श्रवणे बुद्धिर्वर्तते भरतर्षभ ॥१२॥
12. brahmaṇaśca sabhāṁ divyāṁ kathayiṣye gataklamām ,
yadi te śravaṇe buddhirvartate bharatarṣabha.
12. brahmaṇaḥ ca sabhām divyām kathayiṣye gataklamām
yadi te śravaṇe buddhiḥ vartate bharatarṣabha
12. And I will describe the divine assembly of Brahma, which is beyond weariness, if you have an inclination (buddhi) to listen, O best of Bharatas.
नारदेनैवमुक्तस्तु धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
प्राञ्जलिर्भ्रातृभिः सार्धं तैश्च सर्वैर्नृपैर्वृतः ॥१३॥
13. nāradenaivamuktastu dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
prāñjalirbhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ taiśca sarvairnṛpairvṛtaḥ.
13. nāradena eva uktaḥ tu dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prāñjaliḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham taiḥ ca sarvaiḥ nṛpaiḥ vṛtaḥ
13. Indeed, when he was thus addressed by Narada, King Yudhishthira, the king of natural law (dharma), stood with folded hands, accompanied by his brothers and surrounded by all those kings.
नारदं प्रत्युवाचेदं धर्मराजो महामनाः ।
सभाः कथय ताः सर्वाः श्रोतुमिच्छामहे वयम् ॥१४॥
14. nāradaṁ pratyuvācedaṁ dharmarājo mahāmanāḥ ,
sabhāḥ kathaya tāḥ sarvāḥ śrotumicchāmahe vayam.
14. nāradaṃ pratyuvāca idaṃ dharmarājaḥ mahāmanāḥ
sabhāḥ kathaya tāḥ sarvāḥ śrotum icchāmahe vayam
14. The great-minded King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmarāja) replied to Narada, "Please describe all those assemblies (sabhāḥ) to us; we wish to hear about them."
किंद्रव्यास्ताः सभा ब्रह्मन्किंविस्ताराः किमायताः ।
पितामहं च के तस्यां सभायां पर्युपासते ॥१५॥
15. kiṁdravyāstāḥ sabhā brahmankiṁvistārāḥ kimāyatāḥ ,
pitāmahaṁ ca ke tasyāṁ sabhāyāṁ paryupāsate.
15. kiṃ dravyāḥ tāḥ sabhāḥ brahman kiṃ vistārāḥ kiṃ
āyatāḥ pitāmahaṃ ca ke tasyāṃ sabhāyāṃ paryupāsate
15. O brahmana, of what substance are those assemblies (sabhāḥ)? What is their width and what is their length? And who attends to Grandfather Brahma in that assembly?
वासवं देवराजं च यमं वैवस्वतं च के ।
वरुणं च कुबेरं च सभायां पर्युपासते ॥१६॥
16. vāsavaṁ devarājaṁ ca yamaṁ vaivasvataṁ ca ke ,
varuṇaṁ ca kuberaṁ ca sabhāyāṁ paryupāsate.
16. vāsavaṃ devarājaṃ ca yamaṃ vaivasvataṃ ca ke
varuṇaṃ ca kuberaṃ ca sabhāyāṃ paryupāsate
16. And who attends to Vasava (Indra), the king of the gods, and to Yama, the son of Vivasvat; and to Varuna and Kubera, in their assembly?
एतत्सर्वं यथातत्त्वं देवर्षे वदतस्तव ।
श्रोतुमिच्छाम सहिताः परं कौतूहलं हि नः ॥१७॥
17. etatsarvaṁ yathātattvaṁ devarṣe vadatastava ,
śrotumicchāma sahitāḥ paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi naḥ.
17. etat sarvam yathātattvam devarṣe vadataḥ tava
śrotum icchāma sahitāḥ param kautūhalam hi naḥ
17. O divine sage, as you speak, we, assembled together, wish to hear all this as it truly is, for indeed, our curiosity is immense.
एवमुक्तः पाण्डवेन नारदः प्रत्युवाच तम् ।
क्रमेण राजन्दिव्यास्ताः श्रूयन्तामिह नः सभाः ॥१८॥
18. evamuktaḥ pāṇḍavena nāradaḥ pratyuvāca tam ,
krameṇa rājandivyāstāḥ śrūyantāmiha naḥ sabhāḥ.
18. evam uktaḥ pāṇḍavena nāradaḥ prati uvāca tam
krameṇa rājan divyāḥ tāḥ śrūyantām iha naḥ sabhāḥ
18. Thus addressed by the Pāṇḍava, Nārada replied to him, 'O King, let those divine assemblies (sabhāḥ) be heard by us here, in due order.'
