वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वेमां धर्मसंयुक्तां धर्मराजः कथां शुभाम् ।
पुनः पप्रच्छ तमृषिं मार्कण्डेयं तपस्विनम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvemāṁ dharmasaṁyuktāṁ dharmarājaḥ kathāṁ śubhām ,
punaḥ papraccha tamṛṣiṁ mārkaṇḍeyaṁ tapasvinam.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca śrutvā imām
dharma-saṃyuktām dharma-rājaḥ
kathām śubhām punaḥ papraccha
tam ṛṣim mārkaṇḍeyam tapasvinam
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard this excellent story, which was full of principles of natural law (dharma), King Yudhiṣṭhira again questioned that ascetic sage Mārkaṇḍeya.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
कथमग्निर्वनं यातः कथं चाप्यङ्गिराः पुरा ।
नष्टेऽग्नौ हव्यमवहदग्निर्भूत्वा महानृषिः ॥२॥
2. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kathamagnirvanaṁ yātaḥ kathaṁ cāpyaṅgirāḥ purā ,
naṣṭe'gnau havyamavahadagnirbhūtvā mahānṛṣiḥ.
2. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca | katham agniḥ
vanam yātaḥ katham ca api
aṅgirāḥ purā | naṣṭe agnau havyam
avahat agniḥ bhūtvā mahān ṛṣiḥ
2. Yudhiṣṭhira asked: How did Agni go to the forest? And in ancient times, when Agni was lost, how did the great sage Aṅgirās, by becoming Agni himself, carry the sacrificial oblations?
अग्निर्यदा त्वेक एव बहुत्वं चास्य कर्मसु ।
दृश्यते भगवन्सर्वमेतदिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥३॥
3. agniryadā tveka eva bahutvaṁ cāsya karmasu ,
dṛśyate bhagavansarvametadicchāmi veditum.
3. agniḥ yadā tu ekaḥ eva bahutvam ca asya karmasu
| dṛśyate bhagavan sarvam etat icchāmi veditum
3. O revered one, although Agni is one, his manifoldness is observed in his various functions (karma). I wish to understand all this.
कुमारश्च यथोत्पन्नो यथा चाग्नेः सुतोऽभवत् ।
यथा रुद्राच्च संभूतो गङ्गायां कृत्तिकासु च ॥४॥
4. kumāraśca yathotpanno yathā cāgneḥ suto'bhavat ,
yathā rudrācca saṁbhūto gaṅgāyāṁ kṛttikāsu ca.
4. kumāraḥ ca yathā utpannaḥ yathā ca agneḥ sutaḥ abhavat
| yathā rudrāt ca saṃbhūtaḥ gaṅgāyām kṛttikāsu ca
4. And how Kumāra (Skanda) was born, and how he became the son of Agni. Also, how he originated from Rudra, and from Gaṅgā, and through the Kṛttikās (Pleiades).
एतदिच्छाम्यहं त्वत्तः श्रोतुं भार्गवनन्दन ।
कौतूहलसमाविष्टो यथातथ्यं महामुने ॥५॥
5. etadicchāmyahaṁ tvattaḥ śrotuṁ bhārgavanandana ,
kautūhalasamāviṣṭo yathātathyaṁ mahāmune.
5. etat icchāmi ahaṃ tvattaḥ śrotum bhārgavanandana
kautūhalasamāviṣṭaḥ yathātathyam mahāmune
5. O descendant of Bhṛgu, O great sage, I am filled with curiosity and wish to hear this account from you exactly as it happened.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
यथा क्रुद्धो हुतवहस्तपस्तप्तुं वनं गतः ॥६॥
6. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
yathā kruddho hutavahastapastaptuṁ vanaṁ gataḥ.
6. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam
purātanam yathā kruddhaḥ hutavahaḥ tapaḥ taptum vanam gataḥ
6. Mārkaṇḍeya said: In this regard, they also relate this ancient narrative (itihāsa): how the enraged fire god (hutavaha) went to the forest to perform austerity (tapas).
यथा च भगवानग्निः स्वयमेवाङ्गिराभवत् ।
संतापयन्स्वप्रभया नाशयंस्तिमिराणि च ॥७॥
7. yathā ca bhagavānagniḥ svayamevāṅgirābhavat ,
saṁtāpayansvaprabhayā nāśayaṁstimirāṇi ca.
7. yathā ca bhagavān agniḥ svayam eva aṅgirā abhavat
saṃtāpayan svaprabhayā nāśayan timirāṇi ca
7. And how the illustrious Agni himself became Aṅgirā, shining forth with his own splendor and dispelling all darkness.
आश्रमस्थो महाभागो हव्यवाहं विशेषयन् ।
तथा स भूत्वा तु तदा जगत्सर्वं प्रकाशयन् ॥८॥
8. āśramastho mahābhāgo havyavāhaṁ viśeṣayan ,
tathā sa bhūtvā tu tadā jagatsarvaṁ prakāśayan.
8. āśramasthaḥ mahābhāgaḥ havyavāham viśeṣayan
tathā saḥ bhūtvā tu tadā jagat sarvam prakāśayan
8. Residing in the hermitage (āśrama), that illustrious one, having thus become (Aṅgirā), then illuminated the entire world while enhancing his role as the carrier of oblations (havyavāha).
तपश्चरंश्च हुतभुक्संतप्तस्तस्य तेजसा ।
भृशं ग्लानश्च तेजस्वी न स किंचित्प्रजज्ञिवान् ॥९॥
9. tapaścaraṁśca hutabhuksaṁtaptastasya tejasā ,
bhṛśaṁ glānaśca tejasvī na sa kiṁcitprajajñivān.
9. tapaḥ caran ca hutabhuk saṃtaptaḥ tasya tejasā
bhṛśam glānaḥ ca tejasvī na sa kiṃcit prajajñivān
9. The fire-god (Agni), performing severe austerities (tapas), became greatly afflicted by the radiance of Satyaketu. Though inherently radiant, he was extremely weakened and could not comprehend anything at all.
अथ संचिन्तयामास भगवान्हव्यवाहनः ।
अन्योऽग्निरिह लोकानां ब्रह्मणा संप्रवर्तितः ।
अग्नित्वं विप्रनष्टं हि तप्यमानस्य मे तपः ॥१०॥
10. atha saṁcintayāmāsa bhagavānhavyavāhanaḥ ,
anyo'gniriha lokānāṁ brahmaṇā saṁpravartitaḥ ,
agnitvaṁ vipranaṣṭaṁ hi tapyamānasya me tapaḥ.
10. atha saṃcintayāmāsa bhagavān
havyavāhanaḥ anyaḥ agniḥ iha lokānām
brahmaṇā saṃpravartitaḥ agnitvam
vipranaṣṭam hi tapyamānasya me tapaḥ
10. Then the revered fire-god (Agni) thought deeply: "Indeed, my fire-nature is completely lost while I perform this penance (tapas). Another fire has been made to function here for the worlds by Brahmā."
कथमग्निः पुनरहं भवेयमिति चिन्त्य सः ।
अपश्यदग्निवल्लोकांस्तापयन्तं महामुनिम् ॥११॥
11. kathamagniḥ punarahaṁ bhaveyamiti cintya saḥ ,
apaśyadagnivallokāṁstāpayantaṁ mahāmunim.
11. katham agniḥ punaḥ aham bhaveyam iti cintya
saḥ apaśyat agnivāt lokān tāpayantam mahāmunim
11. Having thought, "How can I become fire again?", he (Agni) then saw a great sage (mahāmuni) who was scorching the worlds just like fire.
सोपासर्पच्छनैर्भीतस्तमुवाच तदाङ्गिराः ।
शीघ्रमेव भवस्वाग्निस्त्वं पुनर्लोकभावनः ।
विज्ञातश्चासि लोकेषु त्रिषु संस्थानचारिषु ॥१२॥
12. sopāsarpacchanairbhītastamuvāca tadāṅgirāḥ ,
śīghrameva bhavasvāgnistvaṁ punarlokabhāvanaḥ ,
vijñātaścāsi lokeṣu triṣu saṁsthānacāriṣu.
12. saḥ upāsarpat śanaiḥ bhītaḥ tam uvāca
tadā aṅgirāḥ śīghram eva bhavasva
agniḥ tvam punaḥ lokabhāvanaḥ vijñātaḥ
ca asi lokeṣu triṣu saṃsthānacāriṣu
12. He (Agni) slowly approached, fearful. Then Aṅgirāḥ spoke to him: "Quickly, indeed, become fire again! You will be the sustainer of the worlds. And you are known in the three worlds, pervading all their stations."
त्वमग्ने प्रथमः सृष्टो ब्रह्मणा तिमिरापहः ।
स्वस्थानं प्रतिपद्यस्व शीघ्रमेव तमोनुद ॥१३॥
13. tvamagne prathamaḥ sṛṣṭo brahmaṇā timirāpahaḥ ,
svasthānaṁ pratipadyasva śīghrameva tamonuda.
13. tvam agne prathamaḥ sṛṣṭaḥ brahmaṇā timirāpahaḥ
svasthānam pratipadyasva śīghram eva tamonuda
13. O Agni, you were the first to be created by Brahmā, the remover of darkness. O dispeller of gloom, quickly regain your own abode.
अग्निरुवाच ।
नष्टकीर्तिरहं लोके भवाञ्जातो हुताशनः ।
भवन्तमेव ज्ञास्यन्ति पावकं न तु मां जनाः ॥१४॥
14. agniruvāca ,
naṣṭakīrtirahaṁ loke bhavāñjāto hutāśanaḥ ,
bhavantameva jñāsyanti pāvakaṁ na tu māṁ janāḥ.
14. agniḥ uvāca naṣṭakīrtiḥ aham loke bhavān jātaḥ hutāśanaḥ
bhavantam eva jñāsyanti pāvakam na tu mām janāḥ
14. Agni said: "My fame in the world is lost. You have become the sacrificial fire (hutāśana). People will know you alone as the purifier (pāvaka), but not me."
निक्षिपाम्यहमग्नित्वं त्वमग्निः प्रथमो भव ।
भविष्यामि द्वितीयोऽहं प्राजापत्यक एव च ॥१५॥
15. nikṣipāmyahamagnitvaṁ tvamagniḥ prathamo bhava ,
bhaviṣyāmi dvitīyo'haṁ prājāpatyaka eva ca.
15. nikṣipāmi aham agnitvam tvam agniḥ prathamaḥ bhava
bhaviṣyāmi dvitīyaḥ aham prājāpatyakaḥ eva ca
15. I relinquish my Agnihood; you become the first Agni. And I will indeed be the second, the one related to Prajāpati.
अङ्गिरा उवाच ।
कुरु पुण्यं प्रजास्वर्ग्यं भवाग्निस्तिमिरापहः ।
मां च देव कुरुष्वाग्ने प्रथमं पुत्रमञ्जसा ॥१६॥
16. aṅgirā uvāca ,
kuru puṇyaṁ prajāsvargyaṁ bhavāgnistimirāpahaḥ ,
māṁ ca deva kuruṣvāgne prathamaṁ putramañjasā.
16. aṅgirā uvāca kuru puṇyam prajāsvargyam bhava agniḥ
timirāpahaḥ mām ca deva kuruṣva agne prathamam putram añjasā
16. Aṅgirā said: "Perform a virtuous deed that brings heaven to progeny; be Agni, the remover of darkness. And, O divine Agni, please truly make me your first son."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वाङ्गिरसो वाक्यं जातवेदास्तथाकरोत् ।
राजन्बृहस्पतिर्नाम तस्याप्यङ्गिरसः सुतः ॥१७॥
17. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tacchrutvāṅgiraso vākyaṁ jātavedāstathākarot ,
rājanbṛhaspatirnāma tasyāpyaṅgirasaḥ sutaḥ.
17. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tat śrutvā aṅgirasaḥ vākyam jātavedāḥ
tathā akarot rājan bṛhaspatiḥ nāma tasya api aṅgirasaḥ sutaḥ
17. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having heard that statement of Aṅgiras, Jātavedas (Agni) acted accordingly. O King, the one named Bṛhaspati was also a son of that Aṅgiras.
ज्ञात्वा प्रथमजं तं तु वह्नेराङ्गिरसं सुतम् ।
उपेत्य देवाः पप्रच्छुः कारणं तत्र भारत ॥१८॥
18. jñātvā prathamajaṁ taṁ tu vahnerāṅgirasaṁ sutam ,
upetya devāḥ papracchuḥ kāraṇaṁ tatra bhārata.
18. jñātvā prathamajam tam tu vahneḥ āṅgirasam sutam
upetya devāḥ papracchuḥ kāraṇam tatra bhārata
18. Having recognized him, the first-born son of Agni (Vahni), as an Aṅgirasa, the gods approached him and asked the reason (kāraṇa) for that, O Bhārata.
स तु पृष्टस्तदा देवैस्ततः कारणमब्रवीत् ।
प्रत्यगृह्णंस्तु देवाश्च तद्वचोऽङ्गिरसस्तदा ॥१९॥
19. sa tu pṛṣṭastadā devaistataḥ kāraṇamabravīt ,
pratyagṛhṇaṁstu devāśca tadvaco'ṅgirasastadā.
19. saḥ tu pṛṣṭaḥ tadā devaiḥ tataḥ kāraṇam abravīt
pratyagṛhṇan tu devāḥ ca tat vacaḥ aṅgirasaḥ tadā
19. When he was asked by the gods then, he explained the reason (kāraṇa). And the gods, for their part, accepted that statement of Aṅgiras at that time.
अत्र नानाविधानग्नीन्प्रवक्ष्यामि महाप्रभान् ।
कर्मभिर्बहुभिः ख्यातान्नानात्वं ब्राह्मणेष्विह ॥२०॥
20. atra nānāvidhānagnīnpravakṣyāmi mahāprabhān ,
karmabhirbahubhiḥ khyātānnānātvaṁ brāhmaṇeṣviha.
20. atra nānāvidhān agnīn pravakṣyāmi mahāprabhān
karmabhiḥ bahubhiḥ khyātān nānātvam brāhmaṇeṣu iha
20. Here, I shall describe the various kinds of greatly resplendent fires (Agnis), renowned for their many (karma) actions. I shall also explain the diversity among the Brahmins in this matter.
