1.
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: As the Pārthas, those great warriors (mahārathas), were dwelling disguised in the city of Matsya at that time, ten months elapsed.

2.
O lord (viśām pate), O Janamejaya, Yājñasenī, who was deserving of attendance (paricārārhā) herself, nevertheless resided there very miserably, serving Sudeṣṇā.

3.
The commander-in-chief of Virata thus saw Draupadi, who possessed a lotus-like face, moving about in Sudeshna's abode.

4.
Having seen her, radiant like a celestial being and moving about like a goddess, Kīcaka, tormented by the arrows of love, desired her.

5.
Indeed, the commander (Kīcaka), tormented by the fire of love, approached Sudeshna and, as if laughing, spoke these words.
नेयं पुरा जातु मयेह दृष्टा राज्ञो विराटस्य निवेशने शुभा ।

6.
Never before have I seen such a beautiful woman here in King Virata's palace. With her form, she truly maddens me greatly, like intoxicating wine produced from fragrance, this lovely lady.

7.
O beautiful one (śubhe), tell me, who is this goddess-like woman (devarūpā) who captivates the heart? Who is she, and from where does this lovely woman (śobhanā) come? Indeed, she churns my mind and brings me under control, and today I consider no other remedy for this.

8.
Oh, this beautiful (śubhā) maidservant of yours, this one appears to me with such a fresh (pratyagrarūpā) form! Indeed, she performs a duty (karma) for you that seems unsuitable (ayuktarūpam) for her. Let her govern me, and (let her rule over) whatever little I possess.

9.
Let this woman adorn my grand house (gṛham) — a house possessing abundant elephants, horses, and chariots (prabhūtanāgāśvaratham), immense riches (mahādhanam), endowed with prosperity (samṛddhiyuktam), plentiful drinks and food (bahupānabhojanam), captivating to the mind (manoharam), and splendidly adorned with various golden ornaments (kāñcanacitrabhuṣaṇam).

10.
Then, Keechaka, having obtained permission from Sudeshna, subsequently approached the princess (narādhipātmajām) (Draupadi). At that time, he spoke to Krishna (Kṛṣṇām) (Draupadi), coaxing her, just as a jackal (jambuka) in the forest (vane) would approach a lioness's cub (mṛgendrakanyām).

11.
O beautiful woman (bhāminī), this beauty and your youthful age are utterly useless today. Just like a most excellent garland that is not worn, you do not shine, O beautiful one (sundari), even though you are inherently beautiful.

12.
I will abandon my old wives; let them become your female servants, O lovely-smiling one (cāruhāsinī). And I, O beautiful one (sundari), will always remain like a servant to you, ever submissive, O lovely-faced one (varānanā).

Draupadi said: 'O son of a charioteer (sūtputra), you consider me here to be unworthy of pursuit — a woman deprived of her social class (varṇa), a chambermaid (sairandhrī), repulsive, and a hairdresser.'

14.
I am another's wife; good fortune be with you! This is not proper for you right now. Wives are dear to all living beings. Reflect deeply on (dharma).

15.
Your intention (buddhi) should never, under any circumstances, be directed towards another man's wife. Indeed, refraining from improper actions is the vow (vrata) of a virtuous person.

16.
Indeed, a man (nara) who is falsely greedy, having a sinful nature (pāpātmā) and entrenched in delusion (moha), will obtain terrible infamy and acquire very great fear.

17.
O son of Suta, do not exult! By reveling (mādya) and presuming (abhimanvāna) to take me (mām) – me who is difficult to obtain (durlabhām) and protected (abhirakṣitām) by heroes (vīra) – you will abandon your life (jīvitam).

18.
Nor, indeed, can I be taken by you, for the Gandharvas are my husbands. Angered (kupita), they would surely kill you. Enough (alam) of this! Do not cause me to perish.

19.
You desire to undertake a journey with men who are inherently incapable. It is just like a senseless child or a dull-witted person (mandātman), standing on one bank, wishing to cross to the opposite bank. Similarly, you wish to accomplish something impossible.

20.
Even if you descend deep into the earth, or fly high upwards, or flee across the ocean, you will not escape (vimokṣa) them. For my formidable divine protectors (devasutāḥ) are indeed superior.

21.
Kīcaka, why do you, like some sick person, so persistently entreat me, who am like the night of universal dissolution? Do you indeed consider me to be like a child, lying on its mother's lap, who wishes to grasp the moon?
