वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं भीष्मो वासुदेवस्य धीमतः ।
किंचिदुन्नाम्य वदनं प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvā tu vacanaṁ bhīṣmo vāsudevasya dhīmataḥ ,
kiṁcidunnāmya vadanaṁ prāñjalirvākyamabravīt.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard the words of the intelligent Vāsudeva (Krishna), Bhīṣma slightly raised his face, joined his hands in salutation, and spoke.
नमस्ते भगवन्विष्णो लोकानां निधनोद्भव ।
त्वं हि कर्ता हृषीकेश संहर्ता चापराजितः ॥२॥
2. namaste bhagavanviṣṇo lokānāṁ nidhanodbhava ,
tvaṁ hi kartā hṛṣīkeśa saṁhartā cāparājitaḥ.
2. namaḥ te bhagavan viṣṇo lokānām nidhanodbhava
tvaṃ hi kartā hṛṣīkeśa saṃhartā ca aparājitaḥ
2. bhagavan viṣṇo lokānām nidhanodbhava te namaḥ
hṛṣīkeśa tvaṃ hi kartā ca aparājitaḥ saṃhartā
2. Salutations to you, O Lord (bhagavan) Viṣṇu, who are the origin and dissolution of all worlds! O Hṛṣīkeśa, you are indeed the creator and the unconquered destroyer.
विश्वकर्मन्नमस्तेऽस्तु विश्वात्मन्विश्वसंभव ।
अपवर्गोऽसि भूतानां पञ्चानां परतः स्थितः ॥३॥
3. viśvakarmannamaste'stu viśvātmanviśvasaṁbhava ,
apavargo'si bhūtānāṁ pañcānāṁ parataḥ sthitaḥ.
3. viśvakarman namaḥ astu viśvātman viśvasambhava
apavargaḥ asi bhūtānām pañcānām parataḥ sthitaḥ
3. viśvakarman viśvātman viśvasambhava te namaḥ astu
tvam pañcānām bhūtānām parataḥ sthitaḥ apavargaḥ asi
3. O Vishvakarman, salutations to you! O Soul (ātman) of the universe, O source of the universe! You are the final liberation (apavarga) for all beings, standing beyond the five (great) elements.
नमस्ते त्रिषु लोकेषु नमस्ते परतस्त्रिषु ।
योगेश्वर नमस्तेऽस्तु त्वं हि सर्वपरायणम् ॥४॥
4. namaste triṣu lokeṣu namaste paratastriṣu ,
yogeśvara namaste'stu tvaṁ hi sarvaparāyaṇam.
4. namaḥ te triṣu lokeṣu namaḥ te parataḥ triṣu
yogeśvara namaḥ te astu tvam hi sarvaparāyaṇam
4. te triṣu lokeṣu namaḥ te parataḥ triṣu namaḥ
yogeśvara te namaḥ astu tvam hi sarvaparāyaṇam
4. Salutations to you within the three worlds, and salutations to you who transcends the three (worlds). O Lord of Yoga (yoga), salutations to you! Indeed, you are the ultimate refuge of all.
मत्संश्रितं यदात्थ त्वं वचः पुरुषसत्तम ।
तेन पश्यामि ते दिव्यान्भावान्हि त्रिषु वर्त्मसु ॥५॥
5. matsaṁśritaṁ yadāttha tvaṁ vacaḥ puruṣasattama ,
tena paśyāmi te divyānbhāvānhi triṣu vartmasu.
5. mat saṃśritam yat āttha tvam vacaḥ puruṣasattama
tena paśyāmi te divyān bhāvān hi triṣu vartmasu
5. puruṣasattama tvam mat saṃśritam yat vacaḥ āttha
tena hi te divyān bhāvān triṣu vartmasu paśyāmi
5. O best among men (puruṣa), by means of the words you have spoken concerning me, I indeed perceive your divine manifestations throughout the three paths (or aspects of existence).
तच्च पश्यामि तत्त्वेन यत्ते रूपं सनातनम् ।
सप्त मार्गा निरुद्धास्ते वायोरमिततेजसः ॥६॥
6. tacca paśyāmi tattvena yatte rūpaṁ sanātanam ,
sapta mārgā niruddhāste vāyoramitatejasaḥ.
6. tat ca paśyāmi tattvena yat te rūpam sanātanam
sapta mārgāḥ niruddhāḥ te vāyoḥ amitatejasaḥ
6. ca aham tat rūpam sanātanam yat te tattvena paśyāmi
amitatejasaḥ vāyoḥ te sapta mārgāḥ niruddhāḥ
6. And I truly perceive that eternal form of yours; those seven paths of the immensely powerful Vayu are obstructed.
दिवं ते शिरसा व्याप्तं पद्भ्यां देवी वसुंधरा ।
दिशो भुजौ रविश्चक्षुर्वीर्ये शक्रः प्रतिष्ठितः ॥७॥
7. divaṁ te śirasā vyāptaṁ padbhyāṁ devī vasuṁdharā ,
diśo bhujau raviścakṣurvīrye śakraḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ.
7. divam te śirasā vyāptam padbhyām devī vasundharā
diśaḥ bhujau raviḥ cakṣuḥ vīrye śakraḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ
7. te śirasā divam vyāptam te padbhyām devī vasundharā
diśaḥ bhujau raviḥ cakṣuḥ śakraḥ vīrye pratiṣṭhitaḥ
7. Your head pervades the sky, and the divine Earth (vasundharā) is sustained by your feet. The directions are your arms, the sun is your eye, and Indra is established in your valor.
अतसीपुष्पसंकाशं पीतवाससमच्युतम् ।
वपुर्ह्यनुमिमीमस्ते मेघस्येव सविद्युतः ॥८॥
8. atasīpuṣpasaṁkāśaṁ pītavāsasamacyutam ,
vapurhyanumimīmaste meghasyeva savidyutaḥ.
8. atasīpuṣpasaṃkāśam pītavāsasam acyutam vapuḥ
hi anumimīmahe te meghasya iva savidyutaḥ
8. acyutam te vapuḥ atasīpuṣpasaṃkāśam pītavāsasam
savidyutaḥ meghasya iva hi anumimīmahe
8. We infer your form, O infallible one (Acyuta), which resembles a flax flower and is adorned with yellow garments, to be like a cloud accompanied by lightning.
त्वत्प्रपन्नाय भक्ताय गतिमिष्टां जिगीषवे ।
यच्छ्रेयः पुण्डरीकाक्ष तद्ध्यायस्व सुरोत्तम ॥९॥
9. tvatprapannāya bhaktāya gatimiṣṭāṁ jigīṣave ,
yacchreyaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa taddhyāyasva surottama.
9. tvatprapannāya bhaktāya gatim iṣṭām jigīṣave
yat śreyaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa tat dhyāyasva surottama
9. puṇḍarīkākṣa surottama tvatprapannāya bhaktāya
iṣṭām gatim jigīṣave yat śreyaḥ tat dhyāyasva
9. O lotus-eyed one (Puṇḍarīkākṣa), O best among gods, please meditate on what is most beneficial for this devotee who has surrendered to you and seeks to attain the desired state.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
यतः खलु परा भक्तिर्मयि ते पुरुषर्षभ ।
ततो वपुर्मया दिव्यं तव राजन्प्रदर्शितम् ॥१०॥
10. vāsudeva uvāca ,
yataḥ khalu parā bhaktirmayi te puruṣarṣabha ,
tato vapurmayā divyaṁ tava rājanpradarśitam.
10. vāsudevaḥ uvāca yataḥ khalu parā bhaktiḥ mayi te
puruṣarṣabha tataḥ vapuḥ mayā divyam tava rājan pradarśitam
10. vāsudevaḥ uvāca puruṣarṣabha rājan yataḥ khalu te mayi
parā bhaktiḥ tataḥ mayā tava divyam vapuḥ pradarśitam
10. Vāsudeva said: O best among men (Puruṣarṣabha), O King, because your supreme devotion (bhakti) is indeed focused on me, therefore this divine form has been revealed by me to you.
न ह्यभक्ताय राजेन्द्र भक्तायानृजवे न च ।
दर्शयाम्यहमात्मानं न चादान्ताय भारत ॥११॥
11. na hyabhaktāya rājendra bhaktāyānṛjave na ca ,
darśayāmyahamātmānaṁ na cādāntāya bhārata.
11. na hi abhaktāya rājendra bhaktāya anṛjave na ca
darśayāmi aham ātmānam na ca adāntāya bhārata
11. rājeñdra bhārata hi aham ātmānam abhaktāya na darśayāmi
ca anṛjave bhaktāya na ca adāntāya na (darśayāmi)
11. Indeed, O king among kings (Rajendra), O Bhārata, I do not reveal myself (ātman) to one who lacks devotion (bhakti), nor to a devotee (bhakta) who is not straightforward, nor to one who is not self-controlled.
भवांस्तु मम भक्तश्च नित्यं चार्जवमास्थितः ।
दमे तपसि सत्ये च दाने च निरतः शुचिः ॥१२॥
12. bhavāṁstu mama bhaktaśca nityaṁ cārjavamāsthitaḥ ,
dame tapasi satye ca dāne ca nirataḥ śuciḥ.
12. bhavān tu mama bhaktaḥ ca nityam ca ārjavam
āsthitaḥ dame tapasi satye ca dāne ca nirataḥ śuciḥ
12. tu bhavān mama bhaktaḥ ca nityam ca ārjavam
āsthitaḥ dame tapasi satye ca dāne ca nirataḥ śuciḥ
12. But you, on the other hand, are my devotee (bhakta) and always established in straightforwardness. You are dedicated to self-control, spiritual discipline (tapas), truth, and giving (dāna), and you are pure.
अर्हस्त्वं भीष्म मां द्रष्टुं तपसा स्वेन पार्थिव ।
तव ह्युपस्थिता लोका येभ्यो नावर्तते पुनः ॥१३॥
13. arhastvaṁ bhīṣma māṁ draṣṭuṁ tapasā svena pārthiva ,
tava hyupasthitā lokā yebhyo nāvartate punaḥ.
13. arhaḥ tvam bhīṣma mām draṣṭum tapasā svena pārthiva
tava hi upasthitāḥ lokāḥ yebhyaḥ na āvartate punaḥ
13. bhīṣma pārthiva tvam svena tapasā mām draṣṭum arhaḥ
hi tava lokāḥ upasthitāḥ yebhyaḥ punaḥ na āvartate
13. O Bhīṣma, O ruler, you are indeed worthy to see me through your own spiritual discipline (tapas). For you have attained realms from which one does not return again.
पञ्चाशतं षट्च कुरुप्रवीर शेषं दिनानां तव जीवितस्य ।
ततः शुभैः कर्मफलोदयैस्त्वं समेष्यसे भीष्म विमुच्य देहम् ॥१४॥
14. pañcāśataṁ ṣaṭca kurupravīra; śeṣaṁ dinānāṁ tava jīvitasya ,
tataḥ śubhaiḥ karmaphalodayaistvaṁ; sameṣyase bhīṣma vimucya deham.
14. pañcāśatam ṣaṭ ca kurupravīra
śeṣam dinānām tava jīvitasya tataḥ
śubhaiḥ karmaphalodayaiḥ tvam
sameṣyase bhīṣma vimucya deham
14. kurupravīra tava jīvitasya pañcāśatam
ṣaṭ ca dinānām śeṣam (asti)
tataḥ bhīṣma tvam deham vimucya
śubhaiḥ karmaphalodayaiḥ sameṣyase
14. O hero of the Kurus, fifty-six days remain of your life. Then, O Bhīṣma, having relinquished this body, you will attain the auspicious fruits of your deeds (karma).
एते हि देवा वसवो विमानान्यास्थाय सर्वे ज्वलिताग्निकल्पाः ।
अन्तर्हितास्त्वां प्रतिपालयन्ति काष्ठां प्रपद्यन्तमुदक्पतंगम् ॥१५॥
15. ete hi devā vasavo vimānā;nyāsthāya sarve jvalitāgnikalpāḥ ,
antarhitāstvāṁ pratipālayanti; kāṣṭhāṁ prapadyantamudakpataṁgam.
15. ete hi devā vasavaḥ vimānāni
āsthāya sarve jvalitāgnikalpāḥ
antarhitāḥ tvām pratipālayanti
kāṣṭhām prapadyantam udakpataṅgam
15. hi ete sarve devāḥ vasavaḥ
jvalitāgnikalpāḥ vimānāni āsthāya antarhitāḥ
santaḥ udakpataṅgam kāṣṭhām
prapadyantam tvām pratipālayanti
15. Indeed, all these gods, the Vasus, resembling blazing fires, having ascended their celestial vehicles, remain concealed and await you as the sun enters its northern course.
व्यावृत्तमात्रे भगवत्युदीचीं सूर्ये दिशं कालवशात्प्रपन्ने ।
गन्तासि लोकान्पुरुषप्रवीर नावर्तते यानुपलभ्य विद्वान् ॥१६॥
16. vyāvṛttamātre bhagavatyudīcīṁ; sūrye diśaṁ kālavaśātprapanne ,
gantāsi lokānpuruṣapravīra; nāvartate yānupalabhya vidvān.
16. vyāvṛttamātre bhagavati udīcīm
sūrye diśam kālavaśāt prapanne
gantā asi lokān puruṣapravīra na
āvartate yān upalabhya vidvān
16. puruṣapravīra,
bhagavati sūrye kālavaśāt udīcīm diśam vyāvṛttamātre prapanne (sati),
(tvam) yān lokān upalabhya vidvān na āvartate,
(tān) lokān gantā asi
16. O best among men (puruṣapravīra), as soon as the venerable sun, by the influence of time, has entered the northern direction, you will go to those realms from which a wise person, having attained them, does not return.
अमुं च लोकं त्वयि भीष्म याते ज्ञानानि नङ्क्ष्यन्त्यखिलेन वीर ।
अतः स्म सर्वे त्वयि संनिकर्षं समागता धर्मविवेचनाय ॥१७॥
17. amuṁ ca lokaṁ tvayi bhīṣma yāte; jñānāni naṅkṣyantyakhilena vīra ,
ataḥ sma sarve tvayi saṁnikarṣaṁ; samāgatā dharmavivecanāya.
17. amum ca lokam tvayi bhīṣma yāte
jñānāni naṅkṣyanti akhilena vīra
ataḥ sma sarve tvayi saṃnikarṣam
samāgatāḥ dharmavivecanāya
17. vīra bhīṣma,
tvayi amum lokam yāte (sati),
jñānāni akhilena naṅkṣyanti.
ataḥ sma sarve dharmavivecanāya tvayi saṃnikarṣam samāgatāḥ
17. O hero Bhishma, when you depart from this world, all knowledge will utterly perish. Therefore, all of us have gathered near you for the discernment of natural law (dharma).
तज्ज्ञातिशोकोपहतश्रुताय सत्याभिसंधाय युधिष्ठिराय ।
प्रब्रूहि धर्मार्थसमाधियुक्तमर्थ्यं वचोऽस्यापनुदास्य शोकम् ॥१८॥
18. tajjñātiśokopahataśrutāya; satyābhisaṁdhāya yudhiṣṭhirāya ,
prabrūhi dharmārthasamādhiyukta;marthyaṁ vaco'syāpanudāsya śokam.
18. tat jñātiśokopahataśrutāya
satyābhisandhāya yudhiṣṭhirāya prabrūhi
dharmārthasamādhiyuktam
arthyam vacaḥ asya apanudāsi śokam
18. tat,
jñātiśokopahataśrutāya satyābhisandhāya yudhiṣṭhirāya,
dharmārthasamādhiyuktam arthyam vacaḥ prabrūhi,
(yena tvam) asya śokam apanudāsi
18. Therefore, speak to Yudhishthira, whose wisdom is obscured by grief for his kinsmen and who is firm in his adherence to truth (satyābhisandha), suitable words imbued with (the essence of) natural law (dharma), purpose (artha), and spiritual concentration (samādhi), so that you may dispel his sorrow.
