ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः ।
क्रियतामुपहारोऽद्य त्र्यम्बकस्य महात्मनः ।
कृत्वोपहारं नृपते ततः स्वार्थे यतामहे ॥१॥
1. brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ ,
kriyatāmupahāro'dya tryambakasya mahātmanaḥ ,
kṛtvopahāraṁ nṛpate tataḥ svārthe yatāmahe.

1. The brahmins said: "Let an offering be made today to the great-souled Tryambaka (Śiva). Having made this offering, O king, we shall then strive for our own objectives."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तेषां ब्राह्मणानां युधिष्ठिरः ।
गिरीशस्य यथान्यायमुपहारमुपाहरत् ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvā tu vacanaṁ teṣāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
girīśasya yathānyāyamupahāramupāharat.
2. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca śrutvā tu vacanam teṣām brāhmaṇānām

2. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "Having heard those words from the brahmins, Yudhiṣṭhira then presented an offering to Giriśa (Śiva) in accordance with proper procedure."
आज्येन तर्पयित्वाग्निं विधिवत्संस्कृतेन ह ।
मन्त्रसिद्धं चरुं कृत्वा पुरोधाः प्रययौ तदा ॥३॥
3. ājyena tarpayitvāgniṁ vidhivatsaṁskṛtena ha ,
mantrasiddhaṁ caruṁ kṛtvā purodhāḥ prayayau tadā.

mantrasiddham carum kṛtvā purodhāḥ prayayau tadā

3. Having gratified the fire with ghee, purified according to the rules, and having prepared the sacrificial oblation (caru) consecrated by sacred utterances (mantra), the chief priest then departed.
स गृहीत्वा सुमनसो मन्त्रपूता जनाधिप ।
मोदकैः पायसेनाथ मांसैश्चोपाहरद्बलिम् ॥४॥
4. sa gṛhītvā sumanaso mantrapūtā janādhipa ,
modakaiḥ pāyasenātha māṁsaiścopāharadbalim.

modakaiḥ pāyasena atha māṃsaiḥ ca upāharat balim

4. O ruler of men, he, taking flowers purified by sacred utterances (mantra), then presented an offering with sweets (modaka), milk-rice, and meats.
सुमनोभिश्च चित्राभिर्लाजैरुच्चावचैरपि ।
सर्वं स्विष्टकृतं कृत्वा विधिवद्वेदपारगः ।
किंकराणां ततः पश्चाच्चकार बलिमुत्तमम् ॥५॥
5. sumanobhiśca citrābhirlājairuccāvacairapi ,
sarvaṁ sviṣṭakṛtaṁ kṛtvā vidhivadvedapāragaḥ ,
kiṁkarāṇāṁ tataḥ paścāccakāra balimuttamam.
5. sumanobhiḥ ca citrābhiḥ lājaiḥ
uccāvacaiḥ api sarvam sviṣṭakṛtam kṛtvā
vidhivat vedapāragaḥ kiṃkarāṇām
tataḥ paścāt cakāra balim uttamam
5. vedapāragaḥ vidhivat citrābhiḥ
sumanobhiḥ ca uccāvacaiḥ lājaiḥ api
sarvam sviṣṭakṛtam kṛtvā tataḥ paścāt
kiṃkarāṇām uttamam balim cakāra
5. The expert in the Vedas, having performed all the "sviṣṭakṛt" offerings according to the rules, using various colorful flowers and diverse parched grains, then afterwards made an excellent offering for the servants.
यक्षेन्द्राय कुबेराय मणिभद्राय चैव ह ।
तथान्येषां च यक्षाणां भूताधिपतयश्च ये ॥६॥
6. yakṣendrāya kuberāya maṇibhadrāya caiva ha ,
tathānyeṣāṁ ca yakṣāṇāṁ bhūtādhipatayaśca ye.
6. yakṣendrāya kuberāya maṇibhadrāya ca eva ha
tathā anyeṣām ca yakṣāṇām bhūtādhipatayaḥ ca ye
6. ca eva ha tathā yakṣendrāya kuberāya maṇibhadrāya
ca anyeṣām yakṣāṇām ye ca bhūtādhipatayaḥ
6. And indeed, (the offering was made) to the chief of the yakṣas, to Kubera, and to Maṇibhadra; and similarly, to those other yakṣas who are lords of spirits.
कृसरेण समांसेन निवापैस्तिलसंयुतैः ।
शुशुभे स्थानमत्यर्थं देवदेवस्य पार्थिव ॥७॥
7. kṛsareṇa samāṁsena nivāpaistilasaṁyutaiḥ ,
śuśubhe sthānamatyarthaṁ devadevasya pārthiva.
7. kṛsareṇa samāṃsena nivāpaiḥ tilasaṃyutaiḥ
śuśubhe sthānam atyartham devadevasya pārthiva
7. pārthiva devadevasya sthānam kṛsareṇa samāṃsena
nivāpaiḥ tilasaṃyutaiḥ atyartham śuśubhe
7. O king, the place of the god of gods became exceedingly splendid, adorned with kṛsara (a dish of rice and sesame or lentils), with meat, and with oblations combined with sesame seeds.
कृत्वा तु पूजां रुद्रस्य गणानां चैव सर्वशः ।
ययौ व्यासं पुरस्कृत्य नृपो रत्ननिधिं प्रति ॥८॥
8. kṛtvā tu pūjāṁ rudrasya gaṇānāṁ caiva sarvaśaḥ ,
yayau vyāsaṁ puraskṛtya nṛpo ratnanidhiṁ prati.
8. kṛtvā tu pūjām rudrasya gaṇānām ca eva sarvaśaḥ
yayau vyāsam puraskṛtya nṛpaḥ ratnanidhim prati

8. Having performed the worship (pūjā) of Rudra and all his gaṇas, the king, with Vyāsa leading, went towards the jewel-hoard.
पूजयित्वा धनाध्यक्षं प्रणिपत्याभिवाद्य च ।
सुमनोभिर्विचित्राभिरपूपैः कृसरेण च ॥९॥
9. pūjayitvā dhanādhyakṣaṁ praṇipatyābhivādya ca ,
sumanobhirvicitrābhirapūpaiḥ kṛsareṇa ca.
9. pūjayitvā dhanādhyakṣam praṇipatya abhivādya
ca sumanobhiḥ vicitrābhiḥ apūpaiḥ kṛsareṇa ca
9. dhanādhyakṣam pūjayitvā praṇipatya abhivādya

9. Having worshipped the lord of wealth (Kubera), and having bowed down and saluted, (he honored him) with various beautiful flowers, cakes, and kṛsara (a dish of rice and sesame).
शङ्खादींश्च निधीन्सर्वान्निधिपालांश्च सर्वशः ।
अर्चयित्वा द्विजाग्र्यान्स स्वस्ति वाच्य च वीर्यवान् ॥१०॥
10. śaṅkhādīṁśca nidhīnsarvānnidhipālāṁśca sarvaśaḥ ,
arcayitvā dvijāgryānsa svasti vācya ca vīryavān.
10. śaṅkhādīn ca nidhīn sarvān nidhipālān ca sarvaśaḥ
arcayitvā dvijāgryān svasti vācya ca vīryavān
10. vīryavān śaṅkhādīn sarvān nidhīn ca sarvaśaḥ
nidhipālān ca arcayitvā dvijāgryān svasti vācya ca
10. And having worshipped Śaṅkha and all the other treasures (nidhis), and completely all the guardians of the treasures, and having caused the foremost twice-born (dvija) to pronounce blessings, that valorous (king)...
तेषां पुण्याहघोषेण तेजसा समवस्थितः ।
प्रीतिमान्स कुरुश्रेष्ठः खानयामास तं निधिम् ॥११॥
11. teṣāṁ puṇyāhaghoṣeṇa tejasā samavasthitaḥ ,
prītimānsa kuruśreṣṭhaḥ khānayāmāsa taṁ nidhim.
11. teṣām puṇyāhaghóṣeṇa tejasā samavasthitaḥ
prītimān saḥ kuruśreṣṭhaḥ khānayāmāsa tam nidhim
11. He, the best among the Kurus, pleased and empowered by the auspicious invocation and its radiant energy, then had that treasure unearthed.
ततः पात्र्यः सकरकाः साश्मन्तकमनोरमाः ।
भृङ्गाराणि कटाहानि कलशान्वर्धमानकान् ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ pātryaḥ sakarakāḥ sāśmantakamanoramāḥ ,
bhṛṅgārāṇi kaṭāhāni kalaśānvardhamānakān.
12. tataḥ pātryaḥ sakarakāḥ sāśmantakamanoramāḥ
bhṛṅgārāṇi kaṭāhāni kalaśān vardhamānakān
12. Then, various items were unearthed: bowls with covers, charming with aśmantaka designs, golden pitchers, large cauldrons, water pots, and auspicious growth-vessels.
बहूनि च विचित्राणि भाजनानि सहस्रशः ।
उद्धारयामास तदा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१३॥
13. bahūni ca vicitrāṇi bhājanāni sahasraśaḥ ,
uddhārayāmāsa tadā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
13. bahūni ca vicitrāṇi bhājanāni sahasraśaḥ
uddhārayāmāsa tadā dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
13. Then, Yudhishthira, the king who embodies righteousness (dharma), caused thousands of many diverse and wondrous vessels to be unearthed.
तेषां लक्षणमप्यासीन्महान्करपुटस्तथा ।
त्रिलक्षं भाजनं राजंस्तुलार्धमभवन्नृप ॥१४॥
14. teṣāṁ lakṣaṇamapyāsīnmahānkarapuṭastathā ,
trilakṣaṁ bhājanaṁ rājaṁstulārdhamabhavannṛpa.
14. teṣām lakṣaṇam api āsīt mahān karapuṭaḥ tathā
trilakṣam bhājanam rājan tulārdham abhavat nṛpa
14. O King, the distinguishing mark of those vessels was a large handful (of their contents). Furthermore, each vessel valued at three hundred thousand was found to weigh half a tulā.
वाहनं पाण्डुपुत्रस्य तत्रासीत्तु विशां पते ।
षष्टिरुष्ट्रसहस्राणि शतानि द्विगुणा हयाः ॥१५॥
15. vāhanaṁ pāṇḍuputrasya tatrāsīttu viśāṁ pate ,
ṣaṣṭiruṣṭrasahasrāṇi śatāni dviguṇā hayāḥ.
15. vāhanam pāṇḍuputrasya tatra āsīt tu viśām pate
| ṣaṣṭiḥ uṣṭrasahasrāṇi śatāni dviguṇāḥ hayāḥ
15. viśām pate pāṇḍuputrasya vāhanam tatra tu āsīt

15. O lord of men, the conveyances of Pāṇḍu's son there consisted of sixty thousand camels and twenty thousand horses.
वारणाश्च महाराज सहस्रशतसंमिताः ।
शकटानि रथाश्चैव तावदेव करेणवः ।
खराणां पुरुषाणां च परिसंख्या न विद्यते ॥१६॥
16. vāraṇāśca mahārāja sahasraśatasaṁmitāḥ ,
śakaṭāni rathāścaiva tāvadeva kareṇavaḥ ,
kharāṇāṁ puruṣāṇāṁ ca parisaṁkhyā na vidyate.
16. vāraṇāḥ ca mahārāja sahasraśatasaṃmitāḥ
| śakaṭāni rathāḥ ca eva
tāvat eva kareṇavaḥ | kharāṇām
puruṣāṇām ca parisaṃkhyā na vidyate
16. mahārāja vāraṇāḥ ca sahasraśatasaṃmitāḥ
śakaṭāni rathāḥ ca eva
kareṇavaḥ tāvat eva kharāṇām
puruṣāṇām ca parisaṃkhyā na vidyate
16. And, O great king, there were elephants numbering a hundred thousand. Carts, chariots, and likewise female elephants were also that many. The count of donkeys and men was beyond measure.
एतद्वित्तं तदभवद्यदुद्दध्रे युधिष्ठिरः ।
षोडशाष्टौ चतुर्विंशत्सहस्रं भारलक्षणम् ॥१७॥
17. etadvittaṁ tadabhavadyaduddadhre yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
ṣoḍaśāṣṭau caturviṁśatsahasraṁ bhāralakṣaṇam.
17. etat vittam tat abhavat yat uddhadhre yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
| ṣoḍaśa aṣṭau caturviṃśatsahasram bhāralakṣaṇam
17. yat yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uddhadhre etat vittam tat abhavat
ṣoḍaśa aṣṭau caturviṃśatsahasram bhāralakṣaṇam
17. This was the wealth collected by Yudhiṣṭhira, consisting of sixteen and eight (thousand units), totaling twenty-four thousand *bhāras*.
एतेष्वाधाय तद्द्रव्यं पुनरभ्यर्च्य पाण्डवः ।
महादेवं प्रति ययौ पुरं नागाह्वयं प्रति ॥१८॥
18. eteṣvādhāya taddravyaṁ punarabhyarcya pāṇḍavaḥ ,
mahādevaṁ prati yayau puraṁ nāgāhvayaṁ prati.
18. eteṣu ādhāya tat dravyam punaḥ abhyarcya pāṇḍavaḥ
| mahādevam prati yayau puram nāgāhvayam prati
18. pāṇḍavaḥ eteṣu tat dravyam ādhāya punaḥ abhyarcya
mahādevam prati nāgāhvayam puram prati yayau
18. Having loaded that wealth onto these (conveyances) and having worshipped again, the Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) went towards Mahādeva and towards the city named Nāga.
द्वैपायनाभ्यनुज्ञातः पुरस्कृत्य पुरोहितम् ।
गोयुते गोयुते चैव न्यवसत्पुरुषर्षभः ॥१९॥
19. dvaipāyanābhyanujñātaḥ puraskṛtya purohitam ,
goyute goyute caiva nyavasatpuruṣarṣabhaḥ.

goyute goyute ca eva nyavasat puruṣarṣabhaḥ

19. The chief of men, having received permission from Dvaipāyana and placing his priest (purohita) at the forefront, resided in various places, each rich with cattle.
सा पुराभिमुखी राजञ्जगाम महती चमूः ।
कृच्छ्राद्द्रविणभारार्ता हर्षयन्ती कुरूद्वहान् ॥२०॥
20. sā purābhimukhī rājañjagāma mahatī camūḥ ,
kṛcchrāddraviṇabhārārtā harṣayantī kurūdvahān.
20. sā purābhimukhī rājan jagāma mahatī camūḥ
kṛcchrāt draviṇabhārārtā harṣayantī kurūdvahān
20. rājan sā mahatī camūḥ purābhimukhī draviṇabhārārtā
kṛcchrāt jagāma kurūdvahān harṣayantī
20. O King, that large army, facing the city and troubled by the heavy load of treasure, proceeded with difficulty, yet it brought joy to the leaders of the Kurus.
