वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सा तु कन्या महाराज ब्राह्मणं संशितव्रतम् ।
तोषयामास शुद्धेन मनसा संशितव्रता ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sā tu kanyā mahārāja brāhmaṇaṁ saṁśitavratam ,
toṣayāmāsa śuddhena manasā saṁśitavratā.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: 'O great king, that maiden (Pṛthā), herself of firm resolve (saṃśitavratā), pleased the brahmin of strict vows (saṃśitavratam) with a pure mind.'
प्रातरायास्य इत्युक्त्वा कदाचिद्द्विजसत्तमः ।
तत आयाति राजेन्द्र साये रात्रावथो पुनः ॥२॥
2. prātarāyāsya ityuktvā kadāciddvijasattamaḥ ,
tata āyāti rājendra sāye rātrāvatho punaḥ.
2. prātaḥ āyāsya iti uktvā kadācit dvijasattamaḥ
tataḥ āyāti rājendra sāye rātrau atho punaḥ
2. Once, after saying 'I will come in the morning,' that best among Brahmins (dvija) would then arrive, O king, in the evening or again at night.
तं च सर्वासु वेलासु भक्ष्यभोज्यप्रतिश्रयैः ।
पूजयामास सा कन्या वर्धमानैस्तु सर्वदा ॥३॥
3. taṁ ca sarvāsu velāsu bhakṣyabhojyapratiśrayaiḥ ,
pūjayāmāsa sā kanyā vardhamānaistu sarvadā.
3. taṃ ca sarvāsu velāsu bhakṣyabhojyapratiśrayaiḥ
pūjayām āsa sā kanyā vardhamānaiḥ tu sarvadā
3. And that maiden always honored him at all times with ever-increasing offerings of various foods and drinks.
अन्नादिसमुदाचारः शय्यासनकृतस्तथा ।
दिवसे दिवसे तस्य वर्धते न तु हीयते ॥४॥
4. annādisamudācāraḥ śayyāsanakṛtastathā ,
divase divase tasya vardhate na tu hīyate.

divase divase tasya vardhate na tu hīyate
4. Day by day, his customary offerings of food and other provisions, along with arrangements for bed and seat, continuously increased; they never diminished.
निर्भर्त्सनापवादैश्च तथैवाप्रियया गिरा ।
ब्राह्मणस्य पृथा राजन्न चकाराप्रियं तदा ॥५॥
5. nirbhartsanāpavādaiśca tathaivāpriyayā girā ,
brāhmaṇasya pṛthā rājanna cakārāpriyaṁ tadā.
5. nirbhartsanā apavādaiḥ ca tathā eva apriyayā girā
brāhmaṇasya pṛthā rājan na cakāra apriyaṃ tadā
5. O king, Pṛthā never caused any displeasure (apriyam) to the Brahmin, neither through scolding or blaming, nor with any unkind words.
व्यस्ते काले पुनश्चैति न चैति बहुशो द्विजः ।
दुर्लभ्यमपि चैवान्नं दीयतामिति सोऽब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. vyaste kāle punaścaiti na caiti bahuśo dvijaḥ ,
durlabhyamapi caivānnaṁ dīyatāmiti so'bravīt.
6. vyaste kāle punaḥ ca eti na ca eti bahuśaḥ dvijaḥ
durlabhyam api ca eva annam dīyatām iti saḥ abravīt
6. The brahmin (dvija) said: 'At a particular time, I may return, but not frequently. Therefore, let even food that is difficult to obtain be given.'
कृतमेव च तत्सर्वं पृथा तस्मै न्यवेदयत् ।
शिष्यवत्पुत्रवच्चैव स्वसृवच्च सुसंयता ॥७॥
7. kṛtameva ca tatsarvaṁ pṛthā tasmai nyavedayat ,
śiṣyavatputravaccaiva svasṛvacca susaṁyatā.
7. kṛtam eva ca tat sarvam pṛthā tasmai nyavedayat
śiṣyavat putravat ca eva svasṛvat ca susaṃyatā
7. All that was instructed was indeed accomplished, and Pritha offered it to him. She was extremely well-disciplined, serving him like a disciple, like a son, and like a sister.
यथोपजोषं राजेन्द्र द्विजातिप्रवरस्य सा ।
प्रीतिमुत्पादयामास कन्या यत्नैरनिन्दिता ॥८॥
8. yathopajoṣaṁ rājendra dvijātipravarasya sā ,
prītimutpādayāmāsa kanyā yatnairaninditā.
8. yathā upajoṣam rājendra dvijātipravarasya sā
prītim utpādayāmāsa kanyā yatnaiḥ aninditā
8. O King, that blameless maiden, Pritha, through her efforts, brought satisfaction to the best of the twice-born (dvija), fulfilling all his desires.
तस्यास्तु शीलवृत्तेन तुतोष द्विजसत्तमः ।
अवधानेन भूयोऽस्य परं यत्नमथाकरोत् ॥९॥
9. tasyāstu śīlavṛttena tutoṣa dvijasattamaḥ ,
avadhānena bhūyo'sya paraṁ yatnamathākarot.
9. tasyāḥ tu śīlavṛttena tutoṣa dvijasattamaḥ
avadhānena bhūyaḥ asya param yatnam atha akarot
9. However, the foremost among the twice-born (dvija) was pleased by her character and conduct. Subsequently, due to her attentiveness, he made a great effort for her, (bestowing a significant favor or instruction).
तां प्रभाते च साये च पिता पप्रच्छ भारत ।
अपि तुष्यति ते पुत्रि ब्राह्मणः परिचर्यया ॥१०॥
10. tāṁ prabhāte ca sāye ca pitā papraccha bhārata ,
api tuṣyati te putri brāhmaṇaḥ paricaryayā.
10. tām prabhāte ca sāye ca pitā papraccha bhārata
api tuṣyati te putri brāhmaṇaḥ paricaryayā
10. O Bhārata, her father asked her both in the morning and in the evening, "Daughter, is the Brahmin pleased with your service?"
तं सा परममित्येव प्रत्युवाच यशस्विनी ।
ततः प्रीतिमवापाग्र्यां कुन्तिभोजो महामनाः ॥११॥
11. taṁ sā paramamityeva pratyuvāca yaśasvinī ,
tataḥ prītimavāpāgryāṁ kuntibhojo mahāmanāḥ.
11. tam sā paramam iti eva pratyuvāca yaśasvinī
tataḥ prītim avāpa agryām kuntibhojaḥ mahāmanāḥ
11. The glorious one replied to him, "Exceedingly so!" Thereupon, the great-minded Kuntibhoja attained supreme satisfaction.
ततः संवत्सरे पूर्णे यदासौ जपतां वरः ।
नापश्यद्दुष्कृतं किंचित्पृथायाः सौहृदे रतः ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ saṁvatsare pūrṇe yadāsau japatāṁ varaḥ ,
nāpaśyadduṣkṛtaṁ kiṁcitpṛthāyāḥ sauhṛde rataḥ.
12. tataḥ saṃvatsare pūrṇe yadā asau japatām varaḥ na
apaśyat duṣkṛtam kiṃcit pṛthāyāḥ sauhṛde rataḥ
12. Then, when a full year was complete, that best among chanters (Durvāsā), who was devoted to Pṛthā's benevolence, saw no fault whatsoever.
ततः प्रीतमना भूत्वा स एनां ब्राह्मणोऽब्रवीत् ।
प्रीतोऽस्मि परमं भद्रे परिचारेण ते शुभे ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ prītamanā bhūtvā sa enāṁ brāhmaṇo'bravīt ,
prīto'smi paramaṁ bhadre paricāreṇa te śubhe.
13. tataḥ prītamanāḥ bhūtvā saḥ enām brāhmaṇaḥ abravīt
prītaḥ asmi paramam bhadre paricāreṇa te śubhe
13. Thereupon, the Brahmin, having become pleased in mind, said to her, "O good and fair lady, I am exceedingly pleased with your service."
वरान्वृणीष्व कल्याणि दुरापान्मानुषैरिह ।
यैस्त्वं सीमन्तिनीः सर्वा यशसाभिभविष्यसि ॥१४॥
14. varānvṛṇīṣva kalyāṇi durāpānmānuṣairiha ,
yaistvaṁ sīmantinīḥ sarvā yaśasābhibhaviṣyasi.
14. varān vṛṇīṣva kalyāṇi durāpān mānuṣaiḥ iha yaiḥ
tvam sīmantinīḥ sarvāḥ yaśasā abhibhaviṣyasi
14. O auspicious lady, choose boons here that are difficult for humans to obtain, through which you will surpass all other women in glory.
कुन्त्युवाच ।
कृतानि मम सर्वाणि यस्या मे वेदवित्तम ।
त्वं प्रसन्नः पिता चैव कृतं विप्र वरैर्मम ॥१५॥
15. kuntyuvāca ,
kṛtāni mama sarvāṇi yasyā me vedavittama ,
tvaṁ prasannaḥ pitā caiva kṛtaṁ vipra varairmama.
15. kuntī uvāca kṛtāni mama sarvāṇi yasyāḥ me vedavittama
tvam prasannaḥ pitā ca eva kṛtam vipra varaiḥ mama
15. Kunti said: All my wishes are already fulfilled. O best knower of the Vedas, since you, who are pleased, are indeed like a father to me, O Brahmin, my boons have already been granted.
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
यदि नेच्छसि भद्रे त्वं वरं मत्तः शुचिस्मिते ।
इमं मन्त्रं गृहाण त्वमाह्वानाय दिवौकसाम् ॥१६॥
16. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
yadi necchasi bhadre tvaṁ varaṁ mattaḥ śucismite ,
imaṁ mantraṁ gṛhāṇa tvamāhvānāya divaukasām.
16. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca yadi na icchasi bhadre tvam varam mattaḥ
śucismite imam mantram gṛhāṇa tvam āhvānāya divaukasām
16. The Brahmin said: O virtuous and pure-smiling lady, if you do not desire a boon from me, then accept this mantra (sacred formula) for invoking the celestials.
यं यं देवं त्वमेतेन मन्त्रेणावाहयिष्यसि ।
तेन तेन वशे भद्रे स्थातव्यं ते भविष्यति ॥१७॥
17. yaṁ yaṁ devaṁ tvametena mantreṇāvāhayiṣyasi ,
tena tena vaśe bhadre sthātavyaṁ te bhaviṣyati.
17. yam yam devam tvam etena mantreṇa āvāhayiṣyasi
tena tena vaśe bhadre sthātavyam te bhaviṣyati
17. O virtuous lady, whichever deity you invoke with this mantra (sacred formula), that very deity will be obliged to remain under your control.
अकामो वा सकामो वा न स नैष्यति ते वशम् ।
विबुधो मन्त्रसंशान्तो वाक्ये भृत्य इवानतः ॥१८॥
18. akāmo vā sakāmo vā na sa naiṣyati te vaśam ,
vibudho mantrasaṁśānto vākye bhṛtya ivānataḥ.
18. akāmaḥ vā sakāmaḥ vā na saḥ naiṣyati te vaśam
vibudhaḥ mantrasaṃśāntaḥ vākye bhṛtyaḥ iva ānataḥ
18. Whether willing or unwilling, he will certainly come under your control, just as a wise person, appeased by sacred formulas (mantras), yields to a command like a servant.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
न शशाक द्वितीयं सा प्रत्याख्यातुमनिन्दिता ।
तं वै द्विजातिप्रवरं तदा शापभयान्नृप ॥१९॥
19. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
na śaśāka dvitīyaṁ sā pratyākhyātumaninditā ,
taṁ vai dvijātipravaraṁ tadā śāpabhayānnṛpa.
19. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca na śaśāka dvitīyam sā pratyākhyātum
aninditā tam vai dvijātipravaram tadā śāpabhayāt nṛpa
19. Vaiśampāyana said: O King, she, the blameless one, was then unable to refuse that excellent Brahmin a second time, due to fear of a curse.
ततस्तामनवद्याङ्गीं ग्राहयामास वै द्विजः ।
मन्त्रग्रामं तदा राजन्नथर्वशिरसि श्रुतम् ॥२०॥
20. tatastāmanavadyāṅgīṁ grāhayāmāsa vai dvijaḥ ,
mantragrāmaṁ tadā rājannatharvaśirasi śrutam.
20. tataḥ tām anavadyāṅgīm grāhayāmāsa vai dvijaḥ
mantragrāmam tadā rājan atharvaśirasi śrutam
20. O King, then that Brahmin (dvija) indeed taught her, the one with faultless limbs, the collection of sacred formulas (mantras) that was heard in the Atharvaśiras (Upaniṣad).
तं प्रदाय तु राजेन्द्र कुन्तिभोजमुवाच ह ।
उषितोऽस्मि सुखं राजन्कन्यया परितोषितः ॥२१॥
21. taṁ pradāya tu rājendra kuntibhojamuvāca ha ,
uṣito'smi sukhaṁ rājankanyayā paritoṣitaḥ.
21. tam pradāya tu rājendra kuntibhojam uvāca ha
uṣitaḥ asmi sukham rājan kanyayā paritoṣitaḥ
21. O best of kings (Rājendra), having imparted that (collection of sacred formulas), he then said to Kuntibhoja: "O King, I have resided here happily, having been pleased by the maiden."
तव गेहे सुविहितः सदा सुप्रतिपूजितः ।
साधयिष्यामहे तावदित्युक्त्वान्तरधीयत ॥२२॥
22. tava gehe suvihitaḥ sadā supratipūjitaḥ ,
sādhayiṣyāmahe tāvadityuktvāntaradhīyata.
22. tava gehe suvihitaḥ sadā supratipūjitaḥ
sādhayiṣyāmahe tāvat iti uktvā antardhīyata
22. Being well-received and always well-honored in your home, we shall accomplish this much (for you). Having said this, he disappeared.
स तु राजा द्विजं दृष्ट्वा तत्रैवान्तर्हितं तदा ।
बभूव विस्मयाविष्टः पृथां च समपूजयत् ॥२३॥
23. sa tu rājā dvijaṁ dṛṣṭvā tatraivāntarhitaṁ tadā ,
babhūva vismayāviṣṭaḥ pṛthāṁ ca samapūjayat.
23. sa tu rājā dvijaṃ dṛṣṭvā tatra eva antarhitaṃ
tadā babhūva vismayāviṣṭaḥ pṛthāṃ ca samapūjayat
23. When that king saw the brahmin vanish right there, he became filled with wonder and honored Pṛthā (Kuntī).
