एवं बहुविधं सैन्यमेवं प्रविचितं वरम् ।
व्यूढमेवं यथान्यायमेवं बहु च संजय ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
evaṁ bahuvidhaṁ sainyamevaṁ pravicitaṁ varam ,
vyūḍhamevaṁ yathānyāyamevaṁ bahu ca saṁjaya.

1. Dhritarashtra said: O Sanjaya, in this way, this army is manifold, thus well-chosen and excellent; in this way, it is properly arrayed, and thus it is very numerous.
नित्यं पूजितमस्माभिरभिकामं च नः सदा ।
प्रौढमत्यद्भुताकारं पुरस्ताद्दृढविक्रमम् ॥२॥
2. nityaṁ pūjitamasmābhirabhikāmaṁ ca naḥ sadā ,
prauḍhamatyadbhutākāraṁ purastāddṛḍhavikramam.

prauḍham atyadbhutākāram purastāt dṛḍhavikramam

2. It is always honored by us, and always agreeable to us. It is mighty, of an exceedingly wondrous form, and possessed of firm prowess in the vanguard.
नातिवृद्धमबालं च न कृशं नातिपीवरम् ।
लघुवृत्तायतप्राणं सारगात्रमनामयम् ॥३॥
3. nātivṛddhamabālaṁ ca na kṛśaṁ nātipīvaram ,
laghuvṛttāyataprāṇaṁ sāragātramanāmayam.

laghuvṛttāyataprāṇam sāragātram anāmayam

3. He should be neither too old nor a child, neither too thin nor excessively fat. He should possess light movement and extended breath, a solid physique, and be free from illness.
आत्तसंनाहसंपन्नं बहुशस्त्रपरिच्छदम् ।
शस्त्रग्रहणविद्यासु बह्वीषु परिनिष्ठितम् ॥४॥
4. āttasaṁnāhasaṁpannaṁ bahuśastraparicchadam ,
śastragrahaṇavidyāsu bahvīṣu pariniṣṭhitam.

4. He should be fully equipped with his armor, possess many weapons, and be perfectly skilled in numerous arts of wielding weapons.
आरोहे पर्यवस्कन्दे सरणे सान्तरप्लुते ।
सम्यक्प्रहरणे याने व्यपयाने च कोविदम् ॥५॥
5. ārohe paryavaskande saraṇe sāntaraplute ,

5. He should be skilled in mounting (an attack or vehicle), charging down, swift movement, intermittent leaping, effective striking, advancing, and retreating.
नागेष्वश्वेषु बहुशो रथेषु च परीक्षितम् ।
परीक्ष्य च यथान्यायं वेतनेनोपपादितम् ॥६॥
6. nāgeṣvaśveṣu bahuśo ratheṣu ca parīkṣitam ,
parīkṣya ca yathānyāyaṁ vetanenopapāditam.

6. He should have been frequently tested on elephants, horses, and chariots. And after a proper examination, he should be appointed and paid with wages.
न गोष्ठ्या नोपचारेण न संबन्धनिमित्ततः ।
नानाहूतो न ह्यभृतो मम सैन्ये बभूव ह ॥७॥
7. na goṣṭhyā nopacāreṇa na saṁbandhanimittataḥ ,
nānāhūto na hyabhṛto mama sainye babhūva ha.
7. na goṣṭhyā na upacāreṇa na sambandhanimittataḥ
na anāhūtaḥ na hi abhṛtaḥ mama sainye babhūva ha

7. No one in my army was present merely due to social association, or out of courtesy, or because of family connections. Indeed, no one was uninvited or unpaid.
कुलीनार्यजनोपेतं तुष्टपुष्टमनुद्धतम् ।
कृतमानोपकारं च यशस्वि च मनस्वि च ॥८॥
8. kulīnāryajanopetaṁ tuṣṭapuṣṭamanuddhatam ,
kṛtamānopakāraṁ ca yaśasvi ca manasvi ca.
8. kulīnāryajanopetam tuṣṭapuṣṭamanuddhatam
kṛtamānopakāram ca yaśasvi ca manasvi ca
8. (idam sainyam) kulīnāryajanopetam tuṣṭapuṣṭamanuddhatam

8. It (the army) was comprised of noble and respectable individuals, who were content, well-fed, not arrogant, and who had rendered services with honor, being both renowned and high-minded.
सचिवैश्चापरैर्मुख्यैर्बहुभिर्मुख्यकर्मभिः ।
लोकपालोपमैस्तात पालितं नरसत्तमैः ॥९॥
9. sacivaiścāparairmukhyairbahubhirmukhyakarmabhiḥ ,
lokapālopamaistāta pālitaṁ narasattamaiḥ.

9. O dear one, it was protected by ministers, other chief officers, and many who performed principal duties – all of them like the guardians of the world (lokapāla) and the best among men.
बहुभिः पार्थिवैर्गुप्तमस्मत्प्रियचिकीर्षुभिः ।
अस्मानभिसृतैः कामात्सबलैः सपदानुगैः ॥१०॥
10. bahubhiḥ pārthivairguptamasmatpriyacikīrṣubhiḥ ,
asmānabhisṛtaiḥ kāmātsabalaiḥ sapadānugaiḥ.
10. bahubhiḥ pārthivaiḥ guptam asmatpriyacikīrṣubhiḥ
asmān abhisṛtaiḥ kāmāt sabalaiḥ sapadānugaiḥ
10. (idam sainyam) bahubhiḥ pārthivaiḥ asmatpriyacikīrṣubhiḥ
kāmāt asmān abhisṛtaiḥ sabalaiḥ sapadānugaiḥ guptam
10. It was protected by many kings who wished to please us, having come to us out of their own desire, accompanied by their forces and followers.
महोदधिमिवापूर्णमापगाभिः समन्ततः ।
अपक्षैः पक्षिसंकाशै रथैरश्वैश्च संवृतम् ॥११॥
11. mahodadhimivāpūrṇamāpagābhiḥ samantataḥ ,
apakṣaiḥ pakṣisaṁkāśai rathairaśvaiśca saṁvṛtam.
11. mahodadhim iva āpūrṇam āpagābhiḥ samantataḥ
apakṣaiḥ pakṣisaṃkāśaiḥ rathaiḥ aśvaiḥ ca saṃvṛtam
11. mahodadhim iva āpūrṇam āpagābhiḥ samantataḥ
apakṣaiḥ pakṣisaṃkāśaiḥ rathaiḥ ca aśvaiḥ saṃvṛtam
11. It was like a great ocean, full from all directions with converging rivers, and encompassed by chariots and horses resembling wingless birds.
योधाक्षय्यजलं भीमं वाहनोर्मितरङ्गिणम् ।
क्षेपण्यसिगदाशक्तिशरप्रासझषाकुलम् ॥१२॥
12. yodhākṣayyajalaṁ bhīmaṁ vāhanormitaraṅgiṇam ,
kṣepaṇyasigadāśaktiśaraprāsajhaṣākulam.

kṣepaṇyasi-gadā-śakti-śara-prāsa-jhaṣākulam

12. It was formidable, with inexhaustible warriors as its water, with vehicles as its surging waves, and teeming with javelins, swords, maces, spears (śakti), arrows, and pikes as its fish.
ध्वजभूषणसंबाधं रत्नपट्टेन संचितम् ।
वाहनैरपि धावद्भिर्वायुवेगविकम्पितम् ॥१३॥
13. dhvajabhūṣaṇasaṁbādhaṁ ratnapaṭṭena saṁcitam ,
vāhanairapi dhāvadbhirvāyuvegavikampitam.

vāhanaiḥ api dhāvadbhiḥ vāyuvegavikampitam

13. It was crowded with banners and ornaments, and adorned with jeweled cloths, shaken by the force of the wind, and also agitated by the rushing vehicles.
द्रोणगम्भीरपातालं कृतवर्ममहाह्रदम् ।
जलसंधमहाग्राहं कर्णचन्द्रोदयोद्धतम् ॥१४॥
14. droṇagambhīrapātālaṁ kṛtavarmamahāhradam ,
jalasaṁdhamahāgrāhaṁ karṇacandrodayoddhatam.

14. It had Droṇa as its deep abyss, Kṛtavarman as its great deep pool, Jayadratha (Jalasaṃdha) as its formidable crocodile, and was agitated by Karṇa, who was like the rising moon.
गते सैन्यार्णवं भित्त्वा तरसा पाण्डवर्षभे ।
संजयैकरथेनैव युयुधाने च मामकम् ॥१५॥
15. gate sainyārṇavaṁ bhittvā tarasā pāṇḍavarṣabhe ,
saṁjayaikarathenaiva yuyudhāne ca māmakam.
15. gate sainya-arṇavam bhittvā tarasā pāṇḍava-ṛṣabhe
| saṃjaya eka-rathena eva yuyudhāne ca māmakam
15. saṃjaya pāṇḍava-ṛṣabhe sainya-arṇavam tarasā bhittvā
gate ca yuyudhāne māmakam eka-rathena eva (praviṣṭe)
15. O Sanjaya, when the foremost of the Pandavas (Arjuna) had forcefully penetrated my ocean-like army, and Yuyudhāna (Satyaki) had also entered my (army) with his single chariot (alone),
तत्र शेषं न पश्यामि प्रविष्टे सव्यसाचिनि ।
सात्वते च रथोदारे मम सैन्यस्य संजय ॥१६॥
16. tatra śeṣaṁ na paśyāmi praviṣṭe savyasācini ,
sātvate ca rathodāre mama sainyasya saṁjaya.
16. tatra śeṣam na paśyāmi praviṣṭe savya-sācini |
sātvate ca ratha-udāre mama sainyasya saṃjaya
16. saṃjaya tatra savya-sācini ca ratha-udāre sātvate
praviṣṭe (sati) mama sainyasya śeṣam na paśyāmi
16. O Sanjaya, when Savyasācin (Arjuna) had entered there, and Sātvata (Satyaki), who rides a magnificent chariot, had also entered, I do not see any remnant of my army.
तौ तत्र समतिक्रान्तौ दृष्ट्वाभीतौ तरस्विनौ ।
सिन्धुराजं च संप्रेक्ष्य गाण्डीवस्येषुगोचरे ॥१७॥
17. tau tatra samatikrāntau dṛṣṭvābhītau tarasvinau ,
sindhurājaṁ ca saṁprekṣya gāṇḍīvasyeṣugocare.
17. tau tatra samatikrāntau dṛṣṭvā abhītau tarasvinau
| sindhu-rājam ca samprekṣya gāṇḍīvasya iṣu-gocare

17. Having seen those two, fearless and powerful, having gone far into the enemy lines there, and having perceived the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha) within the range of Gāṇḍīva's arrows,
किं तदा कुरवः कृत्यं विदधुः कालचोदिताः ।
दारुणैकायने काले कथं वा प्रतिपेदिरे ॥१८॥
18. kiṁ tadā kuravaḥ kṛtyaṁ vidadhuḥ kālacoditāḥ ,
dāruṇaikāyane kāle kathaṁ vā pratipedire.
18. kim tadā kuravaḥ kṛtyam vidadhuḥ kāla-coditāḥ
| dāruṇa-eka-ayane kāle katham vā pratipedire
18. tadā kāla-coditāḥ kuravaḥ kim kṛtyam vidadhuḥ
vā dāruṇa-eka-ayane kāle katham pratipedire
18. What action then did the Kauravas, impelled by time (fate), perform in that terrible, decisive moment? Or how did they react?
ग्रस्तान्हि कौरवान्मन्ये मृत्युना तात संगतान् ।
विक्रमो हि रणे तेषां न तथा दृश्यतेऽद्य वै ॥१९॥
19. grastānhi kauravānmanye mṛtyunā tāta saṁgatān ,
vikramo hi raṇe teṣāṁ na tathā dṛśyate'dya vai.
19. grastān hi kauravān manye mṛtyunā tāta saṅgatān |
vikramaḥ hi raṇe teṣām na tathā dṛśyate adya vai
19. tāta,
mṛtyunā saṅgatān kauravān grastān hi manye teṣām vikramaḥ hi adya raṇe tathā na dṛśyate vai
19. O dear one, I indeed believe that the Kauravas are seized by death (mṛtyu), for their valor in battle is not seen today in the usual way.
अक्षतौ संयुगे तत्र प्रविष्टौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ ।
न च वारयिता कश्चित्तयोरस्तीह संजय ॥२०॥
20. akṣatau saṁyuge tatra praviṣṭau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau ,
na ca vārayitā kaścittayorastīha saṁjaya.
20. akṣatau saṃyuge tatra praviṣṭau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau
| na ca vārayitā kaścit tayoḥ asti iha saṃjaya
20. saṃjaya,
akṣatau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau tatra saṃyuge praviṣṭau ca tayoḥ kaścit vārayitā iha na asti
20. O Saṃjaya, Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna have entered that battle unharmed. And there is no one here who can stop those two.
भृताश्च बहवो योधाः परीक्ष्यैव महारथाः ।
वेतनेन यथायोग्यं प्रियवादेन चापरे ॥२१॥
21. bhṛtāśca bahavo yodhāḥ parīkṣyaiva mahārathāḥ ,
vetanena yathāyogyaṁ priyavādena cāpare.
21. bhṛtāḥ ca bahavaḥ yodhāḥ parīkṣya eva mahārathāḥ
| vetanena yathāyogyam priyavādena ca apare
21. parīkṣya eva bahavaḥ mahārathāḥ yodhāḥ bhṛtāḥ

21. Many great chariot-warriors were indeed hired after careful examination; some with appropriate wages, and others through kind words.
अकारणभृतस्तात मम सैन्ये न विद्यते ।
कर्मणा ह्यनुरूपेण लभ्यते भक्तवेतनम् ॥२२॥
22. akāraṇabhṛtastāta mama sainye na vidyate ,
karmaṇā hyanurūpeṇa labhyate bhaktavetanam.
22. akāraṇabhṛtaḥ tāta mama sainye na vidyate |
karmaṇā hi anurūpeṇa labhyate bhaktavetanam
22. tāta,
mama sainye akāraṇabhṛtaḥ na vidyate hi bhaktavetanam अनुरूपेण karmaṇā labhyate
22. O dear one, no one is maintained in my army without cause, for sustenance and wages are indeed obtained through appropriate action (karma).
न च योधोऽभवत्कश्चिन्मम सैन्ये तु संजय ।
अल्पदानभृतस्तात न कुप्यभृतको नरः ॥२३॥
23. na ca yodho'bhavatkaścinmama sainye tu saṁjaya ,
alpadānabhṛtastāta na kupyabhṛtako naraḥ.
23. na ca yodhaḥ abhavat kaścit mama sainye tu
saṃjaya alpadānabhṛtaḥ tāta na kupyabhṛtakaḥ naraḥ
23. saṃjaya,
mama sainye kaścit yodhaḥ na ca abhavat tāta,
alpadānabhṛtaḥ naraḥ kupyabhṛtakaḥ na
23. And indeed, there was no warrior at all in my army, O Sañjaya. O dear one, a man sustained by meager wages is not a mercenary motivated by anger or base motives.
पूजिता हि यथाशक्त्या दानमानासनैर्मया ।
तथा पुत्रैश्च मे तात ज्ञातिभिश्च सबान्धवैः ॥२४॥
24. pūjitā hi yathāśaktyā dānamānāsanairmayā ,
tathā putraiśca me tāta jñātibhiśca sabāndhavaiḥ.
24. pūjitā hi yathāśaktyā dānamāna āsanaiḥ mayā tathā
putraiḥ ca me tāta jñātibhiḥ ca sabāndhavaiḥ
24. tāta,
hi mayā yathāśaktyā dānamāna āsanaiḥ pūjitāḥ tathā me putraiḥ ca,
jñātibhiḥ ca,
sabāndhavaiḥ (pūjitāḥ)
24. Indeed, they (my warriors) were honored by me to the best of my ability with gifts, honors, and seats. And similarly, O dear one (Sañjaya), they were honored by my sons, and by kinsmen, and by relatives.
ते च प्राप्यैव संग्रामे निर्जिताः सव्यसाचिना ।
शैनेयेन परामृष्टाः किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥२५॥
25. te ca prāpyaiva saṁgrāme nirjitāḥ savyasācinā ,
śaineyena parāmṛṣṭāḥ kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.
25. te ca prāpya eva saṃgrāme nirjitāḥ savyasācinā
śaineyena parāmṛṣṭāḥ kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ
25. ca te संग्रामे प्राप्य एव सव्यसाचिना निर्जिताः
शैनेयेन परामृष्टाः भागधेयतः अन्यत् किम्?
25. And they, immediately upon reaching the battlefield, were vanquished by Arjuna, the ambidextrous (savyasācin). They were attacked by Śaineya. What else could it be but fate (bhāgadheya)?
रक्ष्यते यश्च संग्रामे ये च संजय रक्षिणः ।
एकः साधारणः पन्था रक्ष्यस्य सह रक्षिभिः ॥२६॥
26. rakṣyate yaśca saṁgrāme ye ca saṁjaya rakṣiṇaḥ ,
ekaḥ sādhāraṇaḥ panthā rakṣyasya saha rakṣibhiḥ.
26. rakṣyate yaḥ ca saṃgrāme ye ca saṃjaya rakṣiṇaḥ
ekaḥ sādhāraṇaḥ panthāḥ rakṣyasya saha rakṣibhiḥ
26. saṃjaya,
yaḥ ca संग्रामे रक्ष्यते,
ये च रक्षिणः,
(तेषाम्) रक्ष्यस्य सह रक्षिभिः एकः साधारणः पन्थाः
26. And he who is protected in battle, O Sañjaya, and those who are the protectors: there is a single, common fate for the protected one along with the protectors.
अर्जुनं समरे दृष्ट्वा सैन्धवस्याग्रतः स्थितम् ।
पुत्रो मम भृशं मूढः किं कार्यं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥२७॥
27. arjunaṁ samare dṛṣṭvā saindhavasyāgrataḥ sthitam ,
putro mama bhṛśaṁ mūḍhaḥ kiṁ kāryaṁ pratyapadyata.
27. arjunam samare dṛṣṭvā saindhavasya agrataḥ sthitam
putraḥ mama bhṛśam mūḍhaḥ kim kāryam pratyapadyata
27. mama putraḥ samare saindhavasya agrataḥ sthitam
arjunam dṛṣṭvā bhṛśam mūḍhaḥ kim kāryam pratyapadyata
27. When my son (Duryodhana) saw Arjuna standing in front of the Sindhu king (Jayadratha) in battle, he became exceedingly bewildered. What action did he then take?
सात्यकिं च रणे दृष्ट्वा प्रविशन्तमभीतवत् ।
किं नु दुर्योधनः कृत्यं प्राप्तकालममन्यत ॥२८॥
28. sātyakiṁ ca raṇe dṛṣṭvā praviśantamabhītavat ,
kiṁ nu duryodhanaḥ kṛtyaṁ prāptakālamamanyata.
28. sātyakim ca raṇe dṛṣṭvā praviśantam abhītavat
kim nu duryodhanaḥ kṛtyam prāptakālam amanyata
28. ca raṇe abhītavat praviśantam sātyakim dṛṣṭvā
nu duryodhanaḥ kim prāptakālam kṛtyam amanyata
28. And when (my son) Duryodhana saw Satyaki entering the battle fearlessly, what did he then consider to be the appropriate action?
सर्वशस्त्रातिगौ सेनां प्रविष्टौ रथसत्तमौ ।
दृष्ट्वा कां वै धृतिं युद्धे प्रत्यपद्यन्त मामकाः ॥२९॥
29. sarvaśastrātigau senāṁ praviṣṭau rathasattamau ,
dṛṣṭvā kāṁ vai dhṛtiṁ yuddhe pratyapadyanta māmakāḥ.
29. sarvaśastrātīgai senām praviṣṭau rathasattamau
dṛṣṭvā kām vai dhṛtim yuddhe pratyapadyanta māmakāḥ
29. māmakāḥ senām praviṣṭau sarvaśastrātīgai rathasattamau dṛṣṭvā,
yuddhe vai kām dhṛtim pratyapadyanta
29. When my people (the Kauravas) saw the two supreme charioteers (Arjuna and Krishna), who surpass all others in their mastery of weapons, enter the army, what fortitude did they then display in battle?
दृष्ट्वा कृष्णं तु दाशार्हमर्जुनार्थे व्यवस्थितम् ।
शिनीनामृषभं चैव मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥३०॥
30. dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇaṁ tu dāśārhamarjunārthe vyavasthitam ,
śinīnāmṛṣabhaṁ caiva manye śocanti putrakāḥ.
30. dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇam tu dāśārham arjunārthe vyavasthitam
śinīnām ṛṣabham ca eva manye śocanti putrakāḥ
30. tu manye putrakāḥ kṛṣṇam dāśārham arjunārthe
vyavasthitam ca eva śinīnām ṛṣabham dṛṣṭvā śocanti
30. Indeed, seeing Krishna (dāśārha), resolute on Arjuna's behalf, and also the foremost among the Śinis (Satyaki), I believe my sons (the Kauravas) are now lamenting.
दृष्ट्वा सेनां व्यतिक्रान्तां सात्वतेनार्जुनेन च ।
पलायमानांश्च कुरून्मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥३१॥
31. dṛṣṭvā senāṁ vyatikrāntāṁ sātvatenārjunena ca ,
palāyamānāṁśca kurūnmanye śocanti putrakāḥ.
31. dṛṣṭvā senām vyatikrāntām sātvatena arjunena
ca palāyamānān ca kurūn manye śocanti putrakāḥ

31. I believe my sons are lamenting, having seen their army defeated by Sātvata (Kṛṣṇa) and Arjuna, and also the Kurus fleeing.
विद्रुतान्रथिनो दृष्ट्वा निरुत्साहान्द्विषज्जये ।
पलायने कृतोत्साहान्मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥३२॥
32. vidrutānrathino dṛṣṭvā nirutsāhāndviṣajjaye ,
palāyane kṛtotsāhānmanye śocanti putrakāḥ.

32. I believe my sons are lamenting, having seen the charioteers scattered, devoid of enthusiasm in conquering the enemy, yet zealous in their flight.
शून्यान्कृतान्रथोपस्थान्सात्वतेनार्जुनेन च ।
हतांश्च योधान्संदृश्य मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥३३॥
33. śūnyānkṛtānrathopasthānsātvatenārjunena ca ,
hatāṁśca yodhānsaṁdṛśya manye śocanti putrakāḥ.
33. śūnyān kṛtān rathopasthān sātvatena arjunena ca
hatān ca yodhān sandṛśya manye śocanti putrakāḥ
33. manye putrakāḥ sātvatena arjunena ca śūnyān kṛtān

33. I believe my sons are lamenting, observing the chariot stations rendered empty by Sātvata (Kṛṣṇa) and Arjuna, and also the warriors killed.
व्यश्वनागरथान्दृष्ट्वा तत्र वीरान्सहस्रशः ।
धावमानान्रणे व्यग्रान्मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥३४॥
34. vyaśvanāgarathāndṛṣṭvā tatra vīrānsahasraśaḥ ,
dhāvamānānraṇe vyagrānmanye śocanti putrakāḥ.

dhāvamānān raṇe vyagrān manye śocanti putrakāḥ

34. I believe my sons are lamenting, having seen thousands of heroes there whose horses, elephants, and chariots are lost, running agitatedly and distressed in battle.
विवीरांश्च कृतानश्वान्विरथांश्च कृतान्नरान् ।
तत्र सात्यकिपार्थाभ्यां मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥३५॥
35. vivīrāṁśca kṛtānaśvānvirathāṁśca kṛtānnarān ,
tatra sātyakipārthābhyāṁ manye śocanti putrakāḥ.
35. vivīrān ca kṛtān aśvān virathān ca kṛtān narān
tatra sātyakipārthābhyām manye śocanti putrakāḥ
35. manye putrakāḥ śocanti tatra sātyakipārthābhyām
aśvān vivīrān ca kṛtān narān virathān ca kṛtān
35. I believe your sons grieve because, there, due to Satyaki and Arjuna, horses have been made riderless and men have been made chariot-less.
पत्तिसंघान्रणे दृष्ट्वा धावमानांश्च सर्वशः ।
निराशा विजये सर्वे मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥३६॥
36. pattisaṁghānraṇe dṛṣṭvā dhāvamānāṁśca sarvaśaḥ ,
nirāśā vijaye sarve manye śocanti putrakāḥ.
36. pattisaṃghān raṇe dṛṣṭvā dhāvamānān ca sarvaśaḥ
nirāśāḥ vijaye sarve manye śocanti putrakāḥ
36. manye putrakāḥ śocanti raṇe pattisaṃghān

36. I believe your sons lament because, having seen hordes of foot soldiers in battle scattering in all directions, they are all devoid of hope for victory.
द्रोणस्य समतिक्रान्तावनीकमपराजितौ ।
क्षणेन दृष्ट्वा तौ वीरौ मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥३७॥
37. droṇasya samatikrāntāvanīkamaparājitau ,
kṣaṇena dṛṣṭvā tau vīrau manye śocanti putrakāḥ.

37. I believe your sons lament, for they have seen how Drona's army was, in an instant, utterly overwhelmed by those two undefeated heroes (Satyaki and Arjuna).
संमूढोऽस्मि भृशं तात श्रुत्वा कृष्णधनंजयौ ।
प्रविष्टौ मामकं सैन्यं सात्वतेन सहाच्युतौ ॥३८॥
38. saṁmūḍho'smi bhṛśaṁ tāta śrutvā kṛṣṇadhanaṁjayau ,
praviṣṭau māmakaṁ sainyaṁ sātvatena sahācyutau.
38. saṃmūḍhaḥ asmi bhṛśam tāta śrutvā kṛṣṇadhanaṃjayau
praviṣṭau māmakam sainyam sātvatena saha acyutau
38. tāta bhṛśam saṃmūḍhaḥ asmi śrutvā kṛṣṇadhanaṃjayau

38. Dear father, I am exceedingly bewildered having heard that Krishna and Arjuna - those two infallible ones - have entered my army along with Satyaki.
तस्मिन्प्रविष्टे पृतनां शिनीनां प्रवरे रथे ।
भोजानीकं व्यतिक्रान्ते कथमासन्हि कौरवाः ॥३९॥
39. tasminpraviṣṭe pṛtanāṁ śinīnāṁ pravare rathe ,
bhojānīkaṁ vyatikrānte kathamāsanhi kauravāḥ.
39. tasmin praviṣṭe pṛtanām śinīnām pravere rathe
bhojānīkam vyatikrānte katham āsan hi kauravāḥ
39. śinīnām pravere rathe pṛtanām bhojānīkam
vyatikrānte tasmin praviṣṭe kauravāḥ hi katham āsan
39. When he had entered the army of the Śinis in his excellent chariot and passed through the Bhoja army, how, indeed, did the Kauravas fare?
तथा द्रोणेन समरे निगृहीतेषु पाण्डुषु ।
कथं युद्धमभूत्तत्र तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥४०॥
40. tathā droṇena samare nigṛhīteṣu pāṇḍuṣu ,
kathaṁ yuddhamabhūttatra tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
40. tathā droṇena samare nigṛhīteṣu pāṇḍuṣu katham
yuddham abhūt tatra tat mama ācakṣva sañjaya
40. sañjaya tathā droṇena samare nigṛhīteṣu pāṇḍuṣu
tatra yuddham katham abhūt tat mama ācakṣva
40. Then, when the Pāṇḍavas were restrained in battle by Droṇa, how did the battle proceed there? Tell me that, Sañjaya.
द्रोणो हि बलवाञ्शूरः कृतास्त्रो दृढविक्रमः ।
पाञ्चालास्तं महेष्वासं प्रत्ययुध्यन्कथं रणे ॥४१॥
41. droṇo hi balavāñśūraḥ kṛtāstro dṛḍhavikramaḥ ,
pāñcālāstaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ pratyayudhyankathaṁ raṇe.

pāñcālāḥ tam mahāiṣvāsam pratyayudhyan katham raṇe

41. Droṇa, indeed, is powerful, valorous, accomplished in the use of weapons, and of firm prowess. How then did the Pañcālas fight against that great archer in battle?
बद्धवैरास्तथा द्रोणे धर्मराजजयैषिणः ।
भारद्वाजस्तथा तेषु कृतवैरो महारथः ॥४२॥
42. baddhavairāstathā droṇe dharmarājajayaiṣiṇaḥ ,
bhāradvājastathā teṣu kṛtavairo mahārathaḥ.

bhāradvājaḥ tathā teṣu kṛtavairaḥ mahārathaḥ

42. The Pañcālas, who harbored deep enmity (vaira) towards Droṇa and desired the victory of Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira), confronted him. Similarly, Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), that great warrior (mahāratha), had also established a firm enmity (vaira) towards them.
अर्जुनश्चापि यच्चक्रे सिन्धुराजवधं प्रति ।
तन्मे सर्वं समाचक्ष्व कुशलो ह्यसि संजय ॥४३॥
43. arjunaścāpi yaccakre sindhurājavadhaṁ prati ,
tanme sarvaṁ samācakṣva kuśalo hyasi saṁjaya.
43. arjunaḥ ca api yat cakre sindhurājavadham prati
tat me sarvam samācakṣva kuśalaḥ hi asi saṃjaya
43. saṃjaya tvaṃ kuśalaḥ hi asi (tasmāt) arjunaḥ sindhurājavadham
prati yat ca api cakre tat sarvam me samācakṣva
43. O Saṃjaya, for you are skilled, please narrate to me everything that Arjuna also did regarding the slaying of the King of Sindhu.
