संवर्त उवाच ।
कथमस्मि त्वया ज्ञातः केन वा कथितोऽस्मि ते ।
एतदाचक्ष्व मे तत्त्वमिच्छसे चेत्प्रियं मम ॥१॥
1. saṁvarta uvāca ,
kathamasmi tvayā jñātaḥ kena vā kathito'smi te ,
etadācakṣva me tattvamicchase cetpriyaṁ mama.

asmi te etat ācakṣva me tattvam icchase cet priyam mama

1. Saṃvarta said: 'How have you come to know me, or by whom was I described to you? Tell me this truth if you wish to please me.'
सत्यं ते ब्रुवतः सर्वे संपत्स्यन्ते मनोरथाः ।
मिथ्या तु ब्रुवतो मूर्धा सप्तधा ते फलिष्यति ॥२॥
2. satyaṁ te bruvataḥ sarve saṁpatsyante manorathāḥ ,
mithyā tu bruvato mūrdhā saptadhā te phaliṣyati.
2. satyam te bruvataḥ sarve saṃpatsyante manorathāḥ
mithyā tu bruvataḥ mūrdhā saptadhā te phaliṣyati
2. satyam bruvataḥ te sarve manorathāḥ saṃpatsyante
tu mithyā bruvataḥ te mūrdhā saptadhā phaliṣyati
2. If you speak the truth, all your desires will be fulfilled. But if you speak falsely, your head will split into seven pieces.
मरुत्त उवाच ।
नारदेन भवान्मह्यमाख्यातो ह्यटता पथि ।
गुरुपुत्रो ममेति त्वं ततो मे प्रीतिरुत्तमा ॥३॥
3. marutta uvāca ,
nāradena bhavānmahyamākhyāto hyaṭatā pathi ,
guruputro mameti tvaṁ tato me prītiruttamā.
3. marutta uvāca nāradena bhavān mahyam ākhyātaḥ hi aṭatā
pathi guruputraḥ mama iti tvam tataḥ me prītiḥ uttamā
3. marutta uvāca hi nāradena pathi aṭatā tvam mama guruputraḥ
iti mahyam bhavān ākhyātaḥ tataḥ me uttamā prītiḥ
3. Marutta said: 'Nārada, while wandering on the path, indeed told me about you, saying, "You are my preceptor's (guru's) son." Therefore, my affection for you is supreme.'
संवर्त उवाच ।
सत्यमेतद्भवानाह स मां जानाति सत्रिणम् ।
कथयस्वैतदेकं मे क्व नु संप्रति नारदः ॥४॥
4. saṁvarta uvāca ,
satyametadbhavānāha sa māṁ jānāti satriṇam ,
kathayasvaitadekaṁ me kva nu saṁprati nāradaḥ.
4. saṃvarta uvāca satyam etat bhavān āha saḥ mām jānāti
satriṇam kathayasva etat ekam me kva nu saṃprati nāradaḥ
4. saṃvarta uvāca bhavān etat satyam āha saḥ mām satriṇam
jānāti nu etat ekam me kathayasva saṃprati nāradaḥ kva
4. Saṃvarta said: 'You speak the truth. He (Nārada) knows me as a performer of (Vedic rituals). Now, tell me just one thing: where is Nārada at present?'
मरुत्त उवाच ।
भवन्तं कथयित्वा तु मम देवर्षिसत्तमः ।
ततो मामभ्यनुज्ञाय प्रविष्टो हव्यवाहनम् ॥५॥
5. marutta uvāca ,
bhavantaṁ kathayitvā tu mama devarṣisattamaḥ ,
tato māmabhyanujñāya praviṣṭo havyavāhanam.
5. maruttaḥ uvāca | bhavantam kathayitvā tu mama devarṣisattamaḥ
| tataḥ mām abhyanujñāya praviṣṭaḥ havyavāhanam
5. Marutta said: "The best of divine sages, having indeed spoken to me about you, then, after granting me permission, entered the fire (havyavāhana)."
व्यास उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा तु पार्थिवस्यैतत्संवर्तः परया मुदा ।
एतावदहमप्येनं कुर्यामिति तदाब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. vyāsa uvāca ,
śrutvā tu pārthivasyaitatsaṁvartaḥ parayā mudā ,
etāvadahamapyenaṁ kuryāmiti tadābravīt.
6. vyāsaḥ uvāca | śrutvā tu pārthivasya etat saṃvartaḥ parayā
mudā | etāvat aham api enam kuryām iti tadā abravīt
6. Vyāsa said: "Having heard this from the king, Saṃvarta, with great delight, then said, 'I also shall do this much for him.'"
ततो मरुत्तमुन्मत्तो वाचा निर्भर्त्सयन्निव ।
रूक्षया ब्राह्मणो राजन्पुनः पुनरथाब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. tato maruttamunmatto vācā nirbhartsayanniva ,
rūkṣayā brāhmaṇo rājanpunaḥ punarathābravīt.
7. tataḥ maruttam unmattaḥ vācā nirbhartsayan iva |
rūkṣayā brāhmaṇaḥ rājan punaḥ punaḥ atha abravīt
7. Then, the brahmin, like a frenzied person, as if rebuking Marutta with harsh words, O king, spoke again and again.
वातप्रधानेन मया स्वचित्तवशवर्तिना ।
एवं विकृतरूपेण कथं याजितुमिच्छसि ॥८॥
8. vātapradhānena mayā svacittavaśavartinā ,
evaṁ vikṛtarūpeṇa kathaṁ yājitumicchasi.
8. vātaprādhānena mayā svacittavaśavartinā |
evam vikṛtarūpeṇa katham yājitum icchasi
8. How can you desire me, who am thus afflicted by Vāta (the wind-element), acting under the sway of my own mind, and disfigured in form, to officiate a Vedic ritual (yajña)?
भ्राता मम समर्थश्च वासवेन च सत्कृतः ।
वर्तते याजने चैव तेन कर्माणि कारय ॥९॥
9. bhrātā mama samarthaśca vāsavena ca satkṛtaḥ ,
vartate yājane caiva tena karmāṇi kāraya.
9. bhrātā mama samarthaḥ ca vāsavena ca satkṛtaḥ
vartate yājane ca eva tena karmāṇi kāraya
9. mama bhrātā samarthaḥ ca vāsavena ca satkṛtaḥ
yājane eva vartate tena karmāṇi kāraya
9. My brother is capable and honored by Indra. He is indeed engaged in performing Vedic rituals (yajña). Therefore, have the rituals (karma) performed by him.
गृहं स्वं चैव याज्याश्च सर्वा गृह्याश्च देवताः ।
पूर्वजेन ममाक्षिप्तं शरीरं वर्जितं त्विदम् ॥१०॥
10. gṛhaṁ svaṁ caiva yājyāśca sarvā gṛhyāśca devatāḥ ,
pūrvajena mamākṣiptaṁ śarīraṁ varjitaṁ tvidam.
10. gṛham svam ca eva yājyāḥ ca sarvāḥ gṛhyāḥ ca devatāḥ
pūrvajena mama ākṣiptam śarīram varjitam tu idam
10. mama svam gṛham ca eva yājyāḥ ca sarvāḥ gṛhyāḥ ca
devatāḥ pūrvajena ākṣiptam idam tu śarīram varjitam
10. My own home, as well as all the objects of the Vedic ritual (yajña) and the household deities, have been seized by my elder brother, but this body has been abandoned.
नाहं तेनाननुज्ञातस्त्वामाविक्षित कर्हिचित् ।
याजयेयं कथंचिद्वै स हि पूज्यतमो मम ॥११॥
11. nāhaṁ tenānanujñātastvāmāvikṣita karhicit ,
yājayeyaṁ kathaṁcidvai sa hi pūjyatamo mama.
11. na aham tena ananujñātaḥ tvām āvikṣita karhicit
yājayeyam kathaṃcit vai saḥ hi pūjyatamaḥ mama
11. na aham tena ananujñātaḥ karhicit kathaṃcit vai
tvām āvikṣita yājayeyam hi saḥ mama pūjyatamaḥ
11. I, not being authorized by him, would never, in any way, engage you (who have approached for this purpose) in a Vedic ritual (yajña). For he is indeed the most revered to me.
स त्वं बृहस्पतिं गच्छ तमनुज्ञाप्य चाव्रज ।
ततोऽहं याजयिष्ये त्वां यदि यष्टुमिहेच्छसि ॥१२॥
12. sa tvaṁ bṛhaspatiṁ gaccha tamanujñāpya cāvraja ,
tato'haṁ yājayiṣye tvāṁ yadi yaṣṭumihecchasi.
12. saḥ tvam bṛhaspatim gaccha tam anujñāpya ca āvraja
tataḥ aham yājayaiṣye tvām yadi yaṣṭum iha icchasi
12. saḥ tvam bṛhaspatim gaccha tam anujñāpya ca āvraja tataḥ yadi tvam iha yaṣṭum icchasi,
aham tvām yājayaiṣye
12. Therefore, you go to Bṛhaspati, and having obtained his permission, return. Then I will perform the Vedic ritual (yajña) for you if you desire to perform a (Vedic) ritual here.
मरुत्त उवाच ।
बृहस्पतिं गतः पूर्वमहं संवर्त तच्छृणु ।
न मां कामयते याज्यमसौ वासववारितः ॥१३॥
13. marutta uvāca ,
bṛhaspatiṁ gataḥ pūrvamahaṁ saṁvarta tacchṛṇu ,
na māṁ kāmayate yājyamasau vāsavavāritaḥ.
13. maruttaḥ uvāca bṛhaspatim gataḥ pūrvam aham saṃvarta
tat śṛṇu na mām kāmayate yājyam asau vāsavavāritaḥ
13. maruttaḥ uvāca aham pūrvam bṛhaspatim gataḥ saṃvarta
tat śṛṇu asau vāsavavāritaḥ mām yājyam na kāmayate
13. Marutta said: O Saṃvarta, listen to this. Earlier, I went to Bṛhaspati. He did not desire to act as priest for me (yājya), as he was forbidden by Vāsava (Indra).
अमरं याज्यमासाद्य मामृषे मा स्म मानुषम् ।
याजयेथा मरुत्तं त्वं मर्त्यधर्माणमातुरम् ॥१४॥
14. amaraṁ yājyamāsādya māmṛṣe mā sma mānuṣam ,
yājayethā maruttaṁ tvaṁ martyadharmāṇamāturam.
14. amaram yājyam āsādya mām ṛṣe mā sma mānuṣam
yājayethāḥ maruttam tvam martyadharmāṇam āturam
14. ṛṣe amaram yājyam āsādya tvam mām mānuṣam
maruttam martyadharmāṇam āturam mā sma yājayethāḥ
14. O sage (Bṛhaspati), having obtained me, an immortal, as your patron (yājya), you must not officiate for Marutta, who is a human, possesses a mortal nature (dharma), and is distressed.
स्पर्धते च मया विप्र सदा वै स हि पार्थिवः ।
एवमस्त्विति चाप्युक्तो भ्रात्रा ते बलवृत्रहा ॥१५॥
15. spardhate ca mayā vipra sadā vai sa hi pārthivaḥ ,
evamastviti cāpyukto bhrātrā te balavṛtrahā.
15. spardhate ca mayā vipra sadā vai saḥ hi pārthivaḥ
evam astu iti ca api uktaḥ bhrātrā te balavṛtrahā
15. vipra saḥ pārthivaḥ hi mayā sadā vai spardhate ca
te bhrātrā balavṛtrahā ca api evam astu iti uktaḥ
15. O Brahmin (Bṛhaspati), that king (Marutta) indeed always competes with me (Indra). And 'So be it' was also declared by your brother, the slayer of Bala and Vṛtra (Indra).
स मामभिगतं प्रेम्णा याज्यवन्न बुभूषति ।
देवराजमुपाश्रित्य तद्विद्धि मुनिपुंगव ॥१६॥
16. sa māmabhigataṁ premṇā yājyavanna bubhūṣati ,
devarājamupāśritya tadviddhi munipuṁgava.
16. saḥ mām abhigatam premnā yājyavat na bubhūṣati
devarājam upāśritya tat viddhi munipuṅgava
16. munipuṅgava saḥ premnā abhigatam mām yājyavat
na bubhūṣati devarājam upāśritya tat viddhi
16. He (Bṛhaspati) does not wish to accept me, who approached him with affection, as a patron (yājya). Understand this, O best of sages (munipuṅgava), as he relies on the king of gods (Indra).
सोऽहमिच्छामि भवता सर्वस्वेनापि याजितुम् ।
कामये समतिक्रान्तुं वासवं त्वत्कृतैर्गुणैः ॥१७॥
17. so'hamicchāmi bhavatā sarvasvenāpi yājitum ,
kāmaye samatikrāntuṁ vāsavaṁ tvatkṛtairguṇaiḥ.
17. saḥ aham icchāmi bhavatā sarvasvena api yājitum
kāmaye samatikrāntum vāsavam tvatkṛtaiḥ guṇaiḥ
17. saḥ aham bhavatā sarvasvena api yājitum icchāmi
tvatkṛtaiḥ guṇaiḥ vāsavam samatikrāntum kāmaye
17. Therefore, I wish to perform a Vedic ritual (yajña) with your assistance, offering even all my possessions. I desire to surpass Vāsava (Indra) through the merits you will help me accumulate.
न हि मे वर्तते बुद्धिर्गन्तुं ब्रह्मन्बृहस्पतिम् ।
प्रत्याख्यातो हि तेनास्मि तथानपकृते सति ॥१८॥
18. na hi me vartate buddhirgantuṁ brahmanbṛhaspatim ,
pratyākhyāto hi tenāsmi tathānapakṛte sati.
18. na hi me vartate buddhiḥ gantum brahman bṛhaspatim
pratyākhyātaḥ hi tena asmi tathā anapakṛte sati
18. brahman hi me buddhiḥ bṛhaspatim gantum na vartate
hi tena asmi pratyākhyātaḥ tathā anapakṛte sati
18. Indeed, O brahmin (brahman), my intellect does not incline me to go to Bṛhaspati. For I was rejected by him, even though I had committed no offense.
संवर्त उवाच ।
चिकीर्षसि यथाकामं सर्वमेतत्त्वयि ध्रुवम् ।
यदि सर्वानभिप्रायान्कर्तासि मम पार्थिव ॥१९॥
19. saṁvarta uvāca ,
cikīrṣasi yathākāmaṁ sarvametattvayi dhruvam ,
yadi sarvānabhiprāyānkartāsi mama pārthiva.
19. saṃvarta uvāca cikīrṣasi yathākāmam sarvam etat tvayi
dhruvam yadi sarvān abhiprāyān kartā asi mama pārthiva
19. saṃvarta uvāca pārthiva yathākāmam sarvam etat tvayi
dhruvam cikīrṣasi yadi mama sarvān abhiprāyān kartā asi
19. Saṃvarta said: 'Whatever you wish to accomplish, all this is indeed possible for you. (However), O king (pārthiva), this is only if you will fulfill all my intentions.'
याज्यमानं मया हि त्वां बृहस्पतिपुरंदरौ ।
द्विषेतां समभिक्रुद्धावेतदेकं समर्थय ॥२०॥
20. yājyamānaṁ mayā hi tvāṁ bṛhaspatipuraṁdarau ,
dviṣetāṁ samabhikruddhāvetadekaṁ samarthaya.
20. yājyamānam mayā hi tvām bṛhaspati-purandarau
dviṣetām samabhikruddhau etat ekam samarthaya
20. hi mayā yājyamānam tvām samabhikruddhau
bṛhaspati-purandarau dviṣetām etat ekam samarthaya
20. Indeed, Bṛhaspati and Purandara (Indra) will certainly resent you when you are performing a Vedic ritual (yajña) with my assistance, especially as they will be greatly enraged. Be certain of this one fact.
स्थैर्यमत्र कथं ते स्यात्स त्वं निःसंशयं कुरु ।
कुपितस्त्वां न हीदानीं भस्म कुर्यां सबान्धवम् ॥२१॥
21. sthairyamatra kathaṁ te syātsa tvaṁ niḥsaṁśayaṁ kuru ,
kupitastvāṁ na hīdānīṁ bhasma kuryāṁ sabāndhavam.
21. sthairyam atra katham te syāt saḥ tvam niḥsaṃśayam kuru
kupitaḥ tvām na hi idānīm bhasma kuryām sabāndhavam
21. te atra sthairyam katham syāt saḥ tvam niḥsaṃśayam kuru
kupitaḥ hi idānīm tvām sabāndhavam bhasma na kuryām
21. How can you maintain such firmness in this situation? You must certainly act without hesitation. For truly, if I were angered, I would now turn you and your relatives into ashes.
मरुत्त उवाच ।
यावत्तपेत्सहस्रांशुस्तिष्ठेरंश्चापि पर्वताः ।
तावल्लोकान्न लभेयं त्यजेयं संगतं यदि ॥२२॥
22. marutta uvāca ,
yāvattapetsahasrāṁśustiṣṭheraṁścāpi parvatāḥ ,
tāvallokānna labheyaṁ tyajeyaṁ saṁgataṁ yadi.
22. maruttaḥ uvāca yāvat tapet sahasrāṃśuḥ tiṣṭheran ca api
parvatāḥ tāvat lokān na labheyam tyajeyam saṃgatam yadi
22. maruttaḥ uvāca yadi saṃgatam tyajeyam yāvat sahasrāṃśuḥ
tapet ca api parvatāḥ tiṣṭheran tāvat lokān na labheyam
22. Marutta said: 'As long as the sun (sahasrāṃśu) shines and the mountains remain, so long would I not attain the heavenly worlds if I were to abandon this association.'
मा चापि शुभबुद्धित्वं लभेयमिह कर्हिचित् ।
सम्यग्ज्ञाने वैषये वा त्यजेयं संगतं यदि ॥२३॥
23. mā cāpi śubhabuddhitvaṁ labheyamiha karhicit ,
samyagjñāne vaiṣaye vā tyajeyaṁ saṁgataṁ yadi.
23. mā ca api śubhabuddhitvam labheyam iha karhicit
samyagjñāne vaiṣaye vā tyajeyam saṃgatam yadi
23. yadi saṃgatam tyajeyam iha karhicit samyagjñāne
vā vaiṣaye śubhabuddhitvam mā ca api labheyam
23. And may I never again attain good understanding (buddhi) here, whether in right knowledge or in worldly matters, if I were to abandon my association.
संवर्त उवाच ।
आविक्षित शुभा बुद्धिर्धीयतां तव कर्मसु ।
याजनं हि ममाप्येवं वर्तते त्वयि पार्थिव ॥२४॥
24. saṁvarta uvāca ,
āvikṣita śubhā buddhirdhīyatāṁ tava karmasu ,
yājanaṁ hi mamāpyevaṁ vartate tvayi pārthiva.
24. saṃvartaḥ uvāca āvikṣita śubhā buddhiḥ dhīyatām tava
karmasu yājanam hi mama api evam vartate tvayi pārthiva
24. saṃvartaḥ uvāca āvikṣita tava karmasu śubhā buddhiḥ
dhīyatām hi pārthiva mama api yājanam evam tvayi vartate
24. Saṃvarta said: 'O Avikṣit, let auspicious discernment (buddhi) be directed towards your deeds (karma). For truly, my priestly service (yājanam) also depends thus upon you, O King.'
संविधास्ये च ते राजन्नक्षयं द्रव्यमुत्तमम् ।
येन देवान्सगन्धर्वाञ्शक्रं चाभिभविष्यसि ॥२५॥
25. saṁvidhāsye ca te rājannakṣayaṁ dravyamuttamam ,
yena devānsagandharvāñśakraṁ cābhibhaviṣyasi.
25. saṃvidhāsye ca te rājan akṣayam dravyam uttamam
yena devān sa-gandharvān śakram ca abhibhaviṣyasi
25. O king, I shall certainly provide you with excellent, inexhaustible wealth, by which you will surely conquer the gods, including the gandharvas, and even Indra.
न तु मे वर्तते बुद्धिर्धने याज्येषु वा पुनः ।
विप्रियं तु चिकीर्षामि भ्रातुश्चेन्द्रस्य चोभयोः ॥२६॥
26. na tu me vartate buddhirdhane yājyeṣu vā punaḥ ,
vipriyaṁ tu cikīrṣāmi bhrātuścendrasya cobhayoḥ.
26. na tu me vartate buddhiḥ dhane yājyeṣu vā punaḥ
vipriyam tu cikīrṣāmi bhrātuḥ ca indrasya ca ubhayoḥ
26. My intention is not directed towards wealth or towards those to whom Vedic rituals are offered. Rather, I wish to cause displeasure to both my brother and Indra.
गमयिष्यामि चेन्द्रेण समतामपि ते ध्रुवम् ।
प्रियं च ते करिष्यामि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥२७॥
27. gamayiṣyāmi cendreṇa samatāmapi te dhruvam ,
priyaṁ ca te kariṣyāmi satyametadbravīmi te.
27. gamayiṣyāmi ca indreṇa samatām api te dhruvam
priyam ca te kariṣyāmi satyam etat bravīmi te
27. And I shall certainly make you equal with Indra. I shall also do what is pleasing to you; I tell you this truth.
