एकवीरवधे मोघा शक्तिः सूतात्मजे यदा ।
कस्मात्सर्वान्समुत्सृज्य स तां पार्थे न मुक्तवान् ॥१॥

ekavīravadhe moghā śaktiḥ sūtātmaje yadā ,

1. Dhritarashtra said: When the "śakti" (divine power/weapon) for killing the sole warrior became futile on the son of Sūta (Karṇa), why did he not, abandoning all others, release it against Arjuna?
तस्मिन्हते हता हि स्युः सर्वे पाण्डवसृञ्जयाः ।
एकवीरवधे कस्मान्न युद्धे जयमादधत् ॥२॥
2. tasminhate hatā hi syuḥ sarve pāṇḍavasṛñjayāḥ ,
ekavīravadhe kasmānna yuddhe jayamādadhat.
2. tasmin hate hatāḥ hi syuḥ sarve pāṇḍavasṛñjayāḥ
ekavīravadhe kasmāt na yuddhe jayam ādadhat
2. tasmin hate hi sarve pāṇḍavasṛñjayāḥ hatāḥ syuḥ
kasmāt [saḥ] ekavīravadhe yuddhe jayam na ādadhat?
2. Indeed, if he (Arjuna) had been killed, all the Pandavas and Srinjayas would surely have been slain. Why did he not secure victory (jaya) in battle by killing that single hero (Arjuna)?
आहूतो न निवर्तेयमिति तस्य महाव्रतम् ।
स्वयमाह्वयितव्यः स सूतपुत्रेण फल्गुनः ॥३॥
3. āhūto na nivarteyamiti tasya mahāvratam ,
svayamāhvayitavyaḥ sa sūtaputreṇa phalgunaḥ.
3. āhūtaḥ na nivarteyam iti tasya mahāvratam
svayam āhvayitavyaḥ sa sūtaputreṇa phalgunaḥ
3. tasya mahāvratam iti (asti) āhūtaḥ (san) na nivarteyam
saḥ phalgunaḥ sūtaputreṇa svayam āhvayitavyaḥ
3. "I will not retreat when summoned" – this is his (Karṇa's) great vow. Therefore, Arjuna must be challenged by the son of Sūta (Karṇa) himself.
ततो द्वैरथमानीय फल्गुनं शक्रदत्तया ।
न जघान वृषा कस्मात्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥४॥
4. tato dvairathamānīya phalgunaṁ śakradattayā ,
na jaghāna vṛṣā kasmāttanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
4. tataḥ dvairatham ānīya phalgunam śakradattayā
na jaghāna vṛṣā kasmāt tat mama ācakṣva sañjaya
4. sañjaya tataḥ dvairatham ānīya śakradattayā vṛṣā
phalgunam na jaghāna kasmāt tat mama ācakṣva
4. Then, having brought Arjuna to single combat, why did Vṛṣa (Karṇa) not kill him with the spear (śakti) given by Indra? Tell me that, Sanjaya.
नूनं बुद्धिविहीनश्चाप्यसहायश्च मे सुतः ।
शत्रुभिर्व्यंसितोपायः कथं नु स जयेदरीन् ॥५॥
5. nūnaṁ buddhivihīnaścāpyasahāyaśca me sutaḥ ,
śatrubhirvyaṁsitopāyaḥ kathaṁ nu sa jayedarīn.
5. nūnam buddhi-vihīnaḥ ca api asahāyaḥ ca me sutaḥ
śatrubhiḥ vyaṃsita-upāyaḥ katham nu sa jayet arīn
5. nūnam me sutaḥ buddhi-vihīnaḥ ca asahāyaḥ ca api (asti)
śatrubhiḥ vyaṃsita-upāyaḥ saḥ katham nu arīn jayet
5. Surely, my son (Duryodhana) is devoid of intelligence and also helpless, his strategies thwarted by enemies. How then could he possibly conquer his foes?
या ह्यस्य परमा शक्तिर्जयस्य च परायणम् ।
सा शक्तिर्वासुदेवेन व्यंसितास्य घटोत्कचे ॥६॥
6. yā hyasya paramā śaktirjayasya ca parāyaṇam ,
sā śaktirvāsudevena vyaṁsitāsya ghaṭotkace.
6. yā hi asya paramā śaktiḥ jayasya ca parāyaṇam
sā śaktiḥ vāsudevena vyaṃsitā asya ghaṭotkace
6. yā hi asya paramā śaktiḥ ca (yā) jayasya parāyaṇam (āsīt) sā
śaktiḥ vāsudevena asya ghaṭotkace (viṣaye) vyaṃsitā (asti)
6. For his supreme power (śakti), which was also his ultimate means to victory, that power (śakti) was nullified for him by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) through Ghatotkaca.
कुणेर्यथा हस्तगतं ह्रियेद्बिल्वं बलीयसा ।
तथा शक्तिरमोघा सा मोघीभूता घटोत्कचे ॥७॥
7. kuṇeryathā hastagataṁ hriyedbilvaṁ balīyasā ,
tathā śaktiramoghā sā moghībhūtā ghaṭotkace.
7. kuṇeḥ yathā hastagatam hriyet bilvam balīyasā
tathā śaktiḥ amoghā sā moghībhūtā ghaṭotkace
7. यथा बलीयसा कुणेः हस्तगतम् बिल्वम् ह्रियेत्,
तथा सा अमोघा शक्तिः घटोत्कचे मोघीभूता
7. Just as a stronger person would snatch a bilva fruit held in the hand of a weak one, in the same way, that infallible missile (śakti) became futile against Ghaṭotkaca.
यथा वराहस्य शुनश्च युध्यतोस्तयोरभावे श्वपचस्य लाभः ।
मन्ये विद्वन्वासुदेवस्य तद्वद्युद्धे लाभः कर्णहैडिम्बयोर्वै ॥८॥
8. yathā varāhasya śunaśca yudhyato;stayorabhāve śvapacasya lābhaḥ ,
manye vidvanvāsudevasya tadva;dyuddhe lābhaḥ karṇahaiḍimbayorvai.
8. yathā varāhasya śunaḥ ca yudhyatoḥ
tayoḥ abhāve śvapacasya lābhaḥ
manye vidvan vāsudevasya tadvat
yuddhe lābhaḥ karṇahaiḍimbayoḥ vai
8. विद्वन्,
यथा वराहस्य शुनः च युध्यतोः तयोः अभावे श्वपचस्य लाभः,
तद्वत् कर्णहैडिम्बयोः युद्धे वासुदेवस्य लाभः वै मन्ये।
8. O learned one, just as when a boar and a dog are fighting and both disappear, the gain is for the dog-eater; similarly, I believe that in the battle between Karṇa and Ghaṭotkaca, the true gain is for Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa).
घटोत्कचो यदि हन्याद्धि कर्णं परो लाभः स भवेत्पाण्डवानाम् ।
वैकर्तनो वा यदि तं निहन्यात्तथापि कृत्यं शक्तिनाशात्कृतं स्यात् ॥९॥
9. ghaṭotkaco yadi hanyāddhi karṇaṁ; paro lābhaḥ sa bhavetpāṇḍavānām ,
vaikartano vā yadi taṁ nihanyā;ttathāpi kṛtyaṁ śaktināśātkṛtaṁ syāt.
9. ghaṭotkacaḥ yadi hanyāt hi karṇam
paraḥ lābhaḥ sa bhavet pāṇḍavānām
vaikartanaḥ vā yadi tam nihanyāt
tathā api kṛtyam śaktināśāt kṛtam syāt
9. यदि घटोत्कचः कर्णम् हन्यात् हि,
सः परः लाभः पाण्डवानाम् भवेत्वा यदि वैकर्तनः तम् निहन्यात्,
तथा अपि शक्तिनाशात् कृत्यम् कृतम् स्यात्।
9. If Ghaṭotkaca were to indeed kill Karṇa, that would be a supreme gain for the Pāṇḍavas. Or, if Karṇa were to kill him, even then the task would be accomplished due to the destruction of the (śakti) missile.
इति प्राज्ञः प्रज्ञयैतद्विचार्य घटोत्कचं सूतपुत्रेण युद्धे ।
अयोधयद्वासुदेवो नृसिंहः प्रियं कुर्वन्पाण्डवानां हितं च ॥१०॥
10. iti prājñaḥ prajñayaitadvicārya; ghaṭotkacaṁ sūtaputreṇa yuddhe ,
ayodhayadvāsudevo nṛsiṁhaḥ; priyaṁ kurvanpāṇḍavānāṁ hitaṁ ca.
10. iti prājñaḥ prajñayā etat vicārya
ghaṭotkacam sūtaputreṇa yuddhe
ayodhayat vāsudevaḥ nṛsiṃhaḥ
priyam kurvan pāṇḍavānām hitam ca
10. इति प्राज्ञः नृसिंहः वासुदेवः,
प्रज्ञया एतत् विचार्य,
पाण्डवानाम् प्रियम् हितम् च कुर्वन्,
युद्धे सूतपुत्रेण घटोत्कचम् अयोधयत्।
10. Thus, the wise (prājña) Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), a lion among men (nṛsiṃha), having considered this with his intellect (prajñā), engaged Ghaṭotkaca in battle against Karṇa (sūtaputra), thereby doing what was agreeable and beneficial for the Pāṇḍavas.
संजय उवाच ।
एतच्चिकीर्षितं ज्ञात्वा कर्णे मधुनिहा नृप ।
नियोजयामास तदा द्वैरथे राक्षसेश्वरम् ॥११॥
11. saṁjaya uvāca ,
etaccikīrṣitaṁ jñātvā karṇe madhunihā nṛpa ,
niyojayāmāsa tadā dvairathe rākṣaseśvaram.
11. sañjaya uvāca etat cikīrṣitam jñātvā karṇe madhunihā
nṛpa niyojayāmāsa tadā dvairathe rākṣaseśvaram
11. sañjaya uvāca nṛpa madhunihā karṇe etat cikīrṣitam
jñātvā tadā rākṣaseśvaram dvairathe niyojayāmāsa
11. Sañjaya said: O King, then Kṛṣṇa, the slayer of Madhu, understanding this intention regarding Karṇa, appointed the lord of the rākṣasas (Ghaṭotkaca) for a duel.
घटोत्कचं महावीर्यं महाबुद्धिर्जनार्दनः ।
अमोघाया विघातार्थं राजन्दुर्मन्त्रिते तव ॥१२॥
12. ghaṭotkacaṁ mahāvīryaṁ mahābuddhirjanārdanaḥ ,
amoghāyā vighātārthaṁ rājandurmantrite tava.
12. ghaṭotkacaṃ mahāvīryaṃ mahābuddhiḥ janārdanaḥ
amoghāyā vighātārthaṃ rājan durmantrite tava
12. rājan janārdanaḥ mahābuddhiḥ tava durmantrite
amoghāyā vighātārthaṃ mahāvīryaṃ ghaṭotkacaṃ
12. O King, Kṛṣṇa (janārdana), who possesses great intelligence, (appointed) the mighty Ghaṭotkaca for the purpose of thwarting your ill-advised plan regarding the unfailing (weapon).
तदैव कृतकार्या हि वयं स्याम कुरूद्वह ।
न रक्षेद्यदि कृष्णस्तं पार्थं कर्णान्महारथात् ॥१३॥
13. tadaiva kṛtakāryā hi vayaṁ syāma kurūdvaha ,
na rakṣedyadi kṛṣṇastaṁ pārthaṁ karṇānmahārathāt.
13. tadā eva kṛtakāryā hi vayam syāma kurūdvaha na
rakṣet yadi kṛṣṇaḥ tam pārtham karṇāt mahārathāt
13. kurūdvaha yadi kṛṣṇaḥ tam pārtham mahārathāt
karṇāt na rakṣet hi tadā eva vayam kṛtakāryā syāma
13. O best of Kurus, we would surely have accomplished our task then, if Kṛṣṇa had not protected Arjuna (pārtha) from Karṇa, the great warrior.
साश्वध्वजरथः संख्ये धृतराष्ट्र पतेद्भुवि ।
विना जनार्दनं पार्थो योगानामीश्वरं प्रभुम् ॥१४॥
14. sāśvadhvajarathaḥ saṁkhye dhṛtarāṣṭra patedbhuvi ,
vinā janārdanaṁ pārtho yogānāmīśvaraṁ prabhum.
14. sāśvadhvajarathaḥ saṃkhye dhṛtarāṣṭra patet bhuvi
vinā janārdanaṃ pārthaḥ yogānām īśvaraṃ prabhum
14. dhṛtarāṣṭra pārthaḥ vinā yogānām īśvaraṃ prabhum
janārdanaṃ sāśvadhvajarathaḥ saṃkhye bhuvi patet
14. O Dhṛtarāṣṭra, without Kṛṣṇa (janārdana), the lord and master of (all) spiritual practices (yoga), Arjuna (pārtha) along with his horses, banner, and chariot, would fall to the earth in battle.
तैस्तैरुपायैर्बहुभी रक्ष्यमाणः स पार्थिव ।
जयत्यभिमुखः शत्रून्पार्थः कृष्णेन पालितः ॥१५॥
15. taistairupāyairbahubhī rakṣyamāṇaḥ sa pārthiva ,
jayatyabhimukhaḥ śatrūnpārthaḥ kṛṣṇena pālitaḥ.
15. taiḥ taiḥ upāyaiḥ bahubhī rakṣyamāṇaḥ saḥ pārthivaḥ
jayati abhimukhaḥ śatrūn pārthaḥ kṛṣṇena pālitaḥ
15. saḥ pārthivaḥ taiḥ taiḥ bahubhī upāyaiḥ rakṣyamāṇaḥ
pārthaḥ kṛṣṇena pālitaḥ abhimukhaḥ śatrūn jayati
15. Even though that king (Duryodhana) was being protected by numerous such means, Arjuna (Pārtha), protected by Krishna (Kṛṣṇa), conquers his enemies directly.
सविशेषं त्वमोघायाः कृष्णोऽरक्षत पाण्डवम् ।
हन्यात्क्षिप्ता हि कौन्तेयं शक्तिर्वृक्षमिवाशनिः ॥१६॥
16. saviśeṣaṁ tvamoghāyāḥ kṛṣṇo'rakṣata pāṇḍavam ,
hanyātkṣiptā hi kaunteyaṁ śaktirvṛkṣamivāśaniḥ.
16. sa viśeṣam tu amoghāyāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ arakṣata pāṇḍavam
hanyāt kṣiptā hi kaunteyam śaktiḥ vṛkṣam iva aśaniḥ
16. tu kṛṣṇaḥ pāṇḍavam amoghāyāḥ sa viśeṣam arakṣata hi
kṣiptā śaktiḥ aśaniḥ vṛkṣam iva kaunteyam hanyāt
16. Indeed, Krishna (Kṛṣṇa) especially protected Arjuna (Pāṇḍava) from the unfailing missile (śakti). For that spear (śakti), if hurled, would have surely killed Arjuna (Kaunteya), just as a thunderbolt fells a tree.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
विरोधी च कुमन्त्री च प्राज्ञमानी ममात्मजः ।
यस्यैष समतिक्रान्तो वधोपायो जयं प्रति ॥१७॥
17. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
virodhī ca kumantrī ca prājñamānī mamātmajaḥ ,
yasyaiṣa samatikrānto vadhopāyo jayaṁ prati.
17. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca virodhī ca kumantrī ca prājñamānī mama
ātmajaḥ yasya eṣaḥ samatikrāntaḥ vadhopāyaḥ jayam prati
17. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca mama ātmajaḥ virodhī ca kumantrī ca
prājñamānī yasya eṣaḥ jayam prati vadhopāyaḥ samatikrāntaḥ
17. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: My son, who is both hostile and a bad counselor, and who imagines himself to be wise, has now seen this means of killing (vadhopāya), which was intended for victory, completely fail.
तवापि समतिक्रान्तमेतद्गावल्गणे कथम् ।
एतमर्थं महाबुद्धे यत्त्वया नावबोधितः ॥१८॥
18. tavāpi samatikrāntametadgāvalgaṇe katham ,
etamarthaṁ mahābuddhe yattvayā nāvabodhitaḥ.
18. tava api samatikrāntam etad gāvalgaṇe katham
etam artham mahābuddhe yat tvayā na avabodhitaḥ
18. gāvalgaṇe etad tava api katham samatikrāntam
mahābuddhe yat tvayā etam artham na avabodhitaḥ
18. O son of Gavalgaṇa (Gāvalgaṇa), how did this [critical event] also escape your notice? O greatly intelligent one (Mahābuddhe), why was this matter (artha) not understood by you?
संजय उवाच ।
दुर्योधनस्य शकुनेर्मम दुःशासनस्य च ।
रात्रौ रात्रौ भवत्येषा नित्यमेव समर्थना ॥१९॥
19. saṁjaya uvāca ,
duryodhanasya śakunermama duḥśāsanasya ca ,
rātrau rātrau bhavatyeṣā nityameva samarthanā.
19. saṃjaya uvāca | duryodhanasya śakuneḥ mama duḥśāsanasya
ca | rātrau rātrau bhavati eṣā nityam eva samarthanā
19. saṃjaya uvāca duryodhanasya śakuneḥ mama duḥśāsanasya
ca rātrau rātrau eṣā samarthanā nityam eva bhavati
19. Saṃjaya said: "This deliberation (samarthanā) always takes place every night between Duryodhana, Śakuni, Duḥśāsana, and me."
श्वः सर्वसैन्यानुत्सृज्य जहि कर्ण धनंजयम् ।
प्रेष्यवत्पाण्डुपाञ्चालानुपभोक्ष्यामहे ततः ॥२०॥
20. śvaḥ sarvasainyānutsṛjya jahi karṇa dhanaṁjayam ,
preṣyavatpāṇḍupāñcālānupabhokṣyāmahe tataḥ.
20. śvaḥ sarvasainyān utsṛjya jahi karṇa dhanaṃjayam
| preṣyavat pāṇḍupāñcālān upabhokṣyāmahe tataḥ
20. karṇa śvaḥ sarvasainyān utsṛjya dhanaṃjayam jahi
tataḥ preṣyavat pāṇḍupāñcālān upabhokṣyāmahe
20. Karna, tomorrow, after abandoning all other armies, kill Dhananjaya (Arjuna)! Then, we shall enjoy (upabhokṣyāmahe) the Pāṇḍavas and Pāñcālas as if they were servants.
अथ वा निहते पार्थे पाण्डुष्वन्यतमं ततः ।
स्थापयेद्युधि वार्ष्णेयस्तस्मात्कृष्णो निपात्यताम् ॥२१॥
21. atha vā nihate pārthe pāṇḍuṣvanyatamaṁ tataḥ ,
sthāpayedyudhi vārṣṇeyastasmātkṛṣṇo nipātyatām.
21. atha vā nihate pārthe pāṇḍuṣu anyatamam tataḥ |
sthāpayet yudhi vārṣṇeyaḥ tasmāt kṛṣṇaḥ nipātyatām
21. atha vā pārthe nihate tataḥ vārṣṇeyaḥ pāṇḍuṣu
anyatamam yudhi sthāpayet tasmāt kṛṣṇaḥ nipātyatām
21. Or else, if Pārtha (Arjuna) is killed, then Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa) would establish one of the other Pāṇḍavas. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa should be killed.
कृष्णो हि मूलं पाण्डूनां पार्थः स्कन्ध इवोद्गतः ।
शाखा इवेतरे पार्थाः पाञ्चालाः पत्रसंज्ञिताः ॥२२॥
22. kṛṣṇo hi mūlaṁ pāṇḍūnāṁ pārthaḥ skandha ivodgataḥ ,
śākhā ivetare pārthāḥ pāñcālāḥ patrasaṁjñitāḥ.
22. kṛṣṇaḥ hi mūlam pāṇḍūnām pārthaḥ skandhaḥ iva udgataḥ
| śākhāḥ iva itare pārthāḥ pāñcālāḥ patrasaṃjñitāḥ
22. kṛṣṇaḥ hi pāṇḍūnām mūlam pārthaḥ skandhaḥ iva udgataḥ
itare pārthāḥ śākhāḥ iva pāñcālāḥ patrasaṃjñitāḥ
22. Kṛṣṇa, indeed, is the root of the Pāṇḍavas; Pārtha (Arjuna) is like the trunk that has sprung up. The other Pāṇḍavas are like branches, and the Pāñcālas are designated as the leaves.
कृष्णाश्रयाः कृष्णबलाः कृष्णनाथाश्च पाण्डवाः ।
कृष्णः परायणं चैषां ज्योतिषामिव चन्द्रमाः ॥२३॥
23. kṛṣṇāśrayāḥ kṛṣṇabalāḥ kṛṣṇanāthāśca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
kṛṣṇaḥ parāyaṇaṁ caiṣāṁ jyotiṣāmiva candramāḥ.
23. kṛṣṇāśrayāḥ kṛṣṇabalāḥ kṛṣṇanāthāḥ ca pāṇḍavāḥ
kṛṣṇaḥ parāyaṇam ca eṣām jyotiṣām iva candramāḥ
23. pāṇḍavāḥ kṛṣṇāśrayāḥ kṛṣṇabalāḥ kṛṣṇanāthāḥ ca
kṛṣṇaḥ ca eṣām parāyaṇam jyotiṣām candramāḥ iva
23. The Pāṇḍavas rely on Kṛṣṇa, draw their strength from Kṛṣṇa, and have Kṛṣṇa as their protector. Indeed, Kṛṣṇa is their ultimate refuge, just as the moon is among the celestial bodies.
तस्मात्पर्णानि शाखाश्च स्कन्धं चोत्सृज्य सूतज ।
कृष्णं निकृन्धि पाण्डूनां मूलं सर्वत्र सर्वदा ॥२४॥
24. tasmātparṇāni śākhāśca skandhaṁ cotsṛjya sūtaja ,
kṛṣṇaṁ nikṛndhi pāṇḍūnāṁ mūlaṁ sarvatra sarvadā.
24. tasmāt parṇāni śākhāḥ ca skandham ca utsṛjya sūtaj
kṛṣṇam nikṛndhi pāṇḍūnām mūlam sarvatra sarvadā
24. tasmāt sūtaj parṇāni śākhāḥ ca skandham ca utsṛjya
sarvatra sarvadā pāṇḍūnām mūlam kṛṣṇam nikṛndhi
24. Therefore, O son of a charioteer, discard the leaves, branches, and even the trunk; instead, cut down Kṛṣṇa, who is always and everywhere the root of the Pāṇḍavas.
हन्याद्यदि हि दाशार्हं कर्णो यादवनन्दनम् ।
कृत्स्ना वसुमती राजन्वशे ते स्यान्न संशयः ॥२५॥
25. hanyādyadi hi dāśārhaṁ karṇo yādavanandanam ,
kṛtsnā vasumatī rājanvaśe te syānna saṁśayaḥ.
25. hanyāt yadi hi dāśārhām karṇaḥ yādavanandanam
kṛtsnā vasumatī rājan vaśe te syāt na saṃśayaḥ
25. rājan yadi hi karṇaḥ dāśārhām yādavanandanam
hanyāt te vasumatī kṛtsnā vaśe syāt na saṃśayaḥ
25. O King, if Karṇa were indeed to kill Kṛṣṇa, the descendant of Daśārha and the joy of the Yadu clan, then the entire earth would undoubtedly come under your sway.
यदि हि स निहतः शयीत भूमौ यदुकुलपाण्डवनन्दनो महात्मा ।
ननु तव वसुधा नरेन्द्र सर्वा सगिरिसमुद्रवना वशं व्रजेत ॥२६॥
26. yadi hi sa nihataḥ śayīta bhūmau; yadukulapāṇḍavanandano mahātmā ,
nanu tava vasudhā narendra sarvā; sagirisamudravanā vaśaṁ vrajeta.

26. O King (narendra), if that great soul (mahātman), the joy of both the Yadu clan and the Pāṇḍavas, were indeed to lie slain upon the earth, then surely the entire world, including its mountains, oceans, and forests, would come under your dominion.
सा तु बुद्धिः कृताप्येवं जाग्रति त्रिदशेश्वरे ।
अप्रमेये हृषीकेशे युद्धकाले व्यमुह्यत ॥२७॥
27. sā tu buddhiḥ kṛtāpyevaṁ jāgrati tridaśeśvare ,
aprameye hṛṣīkeśe yuddhakāle vyamuhyata.
27. sā tu buddhiḥ kṛtā api evam jāgrati tridaśeśvare
aprameye hṛṣīkeśe yuddhakāle vyamuhyata
27. tu sā buddhiḥ evam kṛtā api aprameye hṛṣīkeśe

27. But that intellect, even though so carefully contrived, became bewildered at the time of battle, despite the immeasurable Hrishikesha (Kṛṣṇa), the master of the gods, being present and vigilant.
अर्जुनं चापि कौन्तेयं सदा रक्षति केशवः ।
न ह्येनमैच्छत्प्रमुखे सौतेः स्थापयितुं रणे ॥२८॥
28. arjunaṁ cāpi kaunteyaṁ sadā rakṣati keśavaḥ ,
na hyenamaicchatpramukhe sauteḥ sthāpayituṁ raṇe.
28. arjunam ca api kaunteyam sadā rakṣati keśavaḥ na
hi enam aicchat pramukhe sauteḥ sthāpayitum raṇe
28. keśavaḥ ca api kaunteyam arjunam sadā rakṣati hi
enam sauteḥ pramukhe raṇe sthāpayitum na aicchat
28. And Keshava always protects Arjuna, the son of Kunti. Indeed, he (Kṛṣṇa) did not wish to place him (Arjuna) directly in front of the son of Sūta (Karṇa) in battle.
अन्यांश्चास्मै रथोदारानुपस्थापयदच्युतः ।
अमोघां तां कथं शक्तिं मोघां कुर्यामिति प्रभो ॥२९॥
29. anyāṁścāsmai rathodārānupasthāpayadacyutaḥ ,
amoghāṁ tāṁ kathaṁ śaktiṁ moghāṁ kuryāmiti prabho.
29. anyān ca asmai ratha udārān upasthāpayat acyutaḥ
amoghām tām katham śaktim moghām kuryām iti prabho
29. prabho acyutaḥ ca asmai anyān ratha udārān upasthāpayat
iti amoghām tām śaktim katham moghām kuryām
29. O Lord (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), the Infallible One (Acyuta) also provided him (Arjuna) with other excellent chariots, (thinking,) 'How can I render that unfailing power (śakti) futile?'
ततः कृष्णं महाबाहुः सात्यकिः सत्यविक्रमः ।
पप्रच्छ रथशार्दूल कर्णं प्रति महारथम् ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ kṛṣṇaṁ mahābāhuḥ sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ ,
papraccha rathaśārdūla karṇaṁ prati mahāratham.
30. tataḥ kṛṣṇam mahābāhuḥ sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ
papraccha rathaśārdūla karṇam prati mahāratham
30. tataḥ mahābāhuḥ satyavikramaḥ sātyakiḥ rathaśārdūlam

30. Then, the mighty-armed Satyaki, whose prowess was true, questioned Kṛṣṇa, the tiger among charioteers, concerning the great warrior Karṇa.
अयं च प्रत्ययः कर्णे शक्त्या चामितविक्रम ।
किमर्थं सूतपुत्रेण न मुक्ता फल्गुने तु सा ॥३१॥
31. ayaṁ ca pratyayaḥ karṇe śaktyā cāmitavikrama ,
kimarthaṁ sūtaputreṇa na muktā phalgune tu sā.
31. ayam ca pratyayaḥ karṇe śaktyā ca amita-vikrama
kimartham sūtaputreṇa na muktā phalgune tu sā
31. amita-vikrama,
karṇe ca śaktyā ca ayaṃ pratyayaḥ; sūtaputreṇa sā phalgune tu kimartham na muktā?
31. O warrior of immeasurable valor, concerning this conviction (in the power of) Karna and his divine missile (śakti), why was it not released by the son of Sūta (Karna) against Arjuna?
वासुदेव उवाच ।
दुःशासनश्च कर्णश्च शकुनिश्च ससैन्धवः ।
सततं मन्त्रयन्ति स्म दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः ॥३२॥
32. vāsudeva uvāca ,
duḥśāsanaśca karṇaśca śakuniśca sasaindhavaḥ ,
satataṁ mantrayanti sma duryodhanapurogamāḥ.
32. vāsudeva uvāca duḥśāsanaḥ ca karṇaḥ ca śakuniḥ ca
sasaindhavaḥ satatam mantrayanti sma duryodhanapurōgamāḥ
32. vāsudeva uvāca.
duḥśāsanaḥ ca karṇaḥ ca śakuniḥ ca sasaindhavaḥ,
duryodhanapurōgamāḥ,
satatam mantrayanti sma.
32. Vāsudeva said: Duhshasana, Karna, Shakuni, along with Saindhava (Jayadratha), and led by Duryodhana, were constantly deliberating.
कर्ण कर्ण महेष्वास रणेऽमितपराक्रम ।
नान्यस्य शक्तिरेषा ते मोक्तव्या जयतां वर ॥३३॥
33. karṇa karṇa maheṣvāsa raṇe'mitaparākrama ,
nānyasya śaktireṣā te moktavyā jayatāṁ vara.
33. karṇa karṇa maheṣvāsa raṇe amita-parākrama na
anyasya śaktiḥ eṣā te moktavyā jayatām vara
33. karṇa,
karṇa! maheṣvāsa,
raṇe amita-parākrama,
jayatām vara! te eṣā śaktiḥ anyasya na moktavyā.
33. Karna, Karna! O great archer, O warrior of immeasurable valor in battle, this divine missile (śakti) of yours should not be released against anyone else, O best among victors!
ऋते महारथात्पार्थात्कुन्तीपुत्राद्धनंजयात् ।
स हि तेषामतियशा देवानामिव वासवः ॥३४॥
34. ṛte mahārathātpārthātkuntīputrāddhanaṁjayāt ,
sa hi teṣāmatiyaśā devānāmiva vāsavaḥ.
34. ṛte mahārathāt pārthāt kuntīputrāt dhanaṃjayāt
sa hi teṣām ati-yaśā devānām iva vāsavaḥ
34. mahārathāt pārthāt kuntīputrāt dhanaṃjayāt ṛte,
sa hi teṣām devānām iva vāsavaḥ [asti],
ati-yaśā.
34. Except for the great warrior Pārtha (Arjuna), the son of Kunti, Dhananjaya (Arjuna). For indeed, he is exceedingly famous among them, just as Vāsava (Indra) is among the gods.
तस्मिन्विनिहते सर्वे पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयैः सह ।
भविष्यन्ति गतात्मानः सुरा इव निरग्नयः ॥३५॥
35. tasminvinihate sarve pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha ,
bhaviṣyanti gatātmānaḥ surā iva niragnayaḥ.
35. tasmīn vinihate sarve pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha
bhaviṣyanti gatātmānaḥ surāḥ iva niragnayaḥ
35. tasmīn vinihate sarve pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha
gatātmānaḥ niragnayaḥ surāḥ iva bhaviṣyanti
35. When he is slain, all the Pandavas, along with the Srinjayas, will become utterly disheartened (gataātman), like gods without their sacrificial fires.
तथेति च प्रतिज्ञातं कर्णेन शिनिपुंगव ।
हृदि नित्यं तु कर्णस्य वधो गाण्डीवधन्वनः ॥३६॥
36. tatheti ca pratijñātaṁ karṇena śinipuṁgava ,
hṛdi nityaṁ tu karṇasya vadho gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ.
36. tathā iti ca pratijñātam karṇena śinipuṅgava
hṛdi nityam tu karṇasya vadhaḥ gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ
36. śinipuṅgava karṇena tathā iti ca pratijñātam tu
karṇasya hṛdi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ vadhaḥ nityam
36. O best among the Shinis (śinipuṅgava), thus was the vow made by Karna. Yet, the killing of Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, was always in Karna's heart.
अहमेव तु राधेयं मोहयामि युधां वर ।
यतो नावसृजच्छक्तिं पाण्डवे श्वेतवाहने ॥३७॥
37. ahameva tu rādheyaṁ mohayāmi yudhāṁ vara ,
yato nāvasṛjacchaktiṁ pāṇḍave śvetavāhane.
37. aham eva tu rādheyam mohayāmi yudhām vara
yataḥ na avasṛjat śaktim pāṇḍave śvetavāhane
37. yudhām vara aham tu rādheyam mohayāmi yataḥ
(saḥ) śvetavāhane pāṇḍave śaktim na avasṛjat
37. O best of warriors (yudhāṃ vara), I myself delude Karna (Rādheya), due to which he did not unleash his divine spear (śakti) upon Arjuna (the white-horsed Pandava).
फल्गुनस्य हि तां मृत्युमवगम्य युयुत्सतः ।
न निद्रा न च मे हर्षो मनसोऽस्ति युधां वर ॥३८॥
38. phalgunasya hi tāṁ mṛtyumavagamya yuyutsataḥ ,
na nidrā na ca me harṣo manaso'sti yudhāṁ vara.
38. phalgunasya hi tām mṛtyum avagamya yuyutsataḥ na
nidrā na ca me harṣaḥ manasaḥ asti yudhām vara
38. yudhām vara hi yuyutsataḥ phalgunasya tām mṛtyum
avagamya me manasaḥ na nidrā na ca harṣaḥ asti
38. O best of warriors (yudhāṃ vara), indeed, having come to know of that death of Arjuna (Phalguna), who is eager for battle, neither sleep nor joy remains in my mind.
घटोत्कचे व्यंसितां तु दृष्ट्वा तां शिनिपुंगव ।
मृत्योरास्यान्तरान्मुक्तं पश्याम्यद्य धनंजयम् ॥३९॥
39. ghaṭotkace vyaṁsitāṁ tu dṛṣṭvā tāṁ śinipuṁgava ,
mṛtyorāsyāntarānmuktaṁ paśyāmyadya dhanaṁjayam.
39. ghaṭotkace vyaṃsitām tu dṛṣṭvā tām śinipuṃgava
mṛtyoḥ āsyāntarāt muktaṃ paśyāmi adya dhanaṃjayam
39. śinipuṃgava ghaṭotkace tām vyaṃsitām dṛṣṭvā adya
dhanaṃjayam mṛtyoḥ āsyāntarāt muktaṃ paśyāmi
39. O best among the Śinis, having seen Ghaṭotkaca struck down by that [weapon], I see Arjuna (Dhanaṃjaya) today released from the jaws of death.
न पिता न च मे माता न यूयं भ्रातरस्तथा ।
न च प्राणास्तथा रक्ष्या यथा बीभत्सुराहवे ॥४०॥
40. na pitā na ca me mātā na yūyaṁ bhrātarastathā ,
na ca prāṇāstathā rakṣyā yathā bībhatsurāhave.
40. na pitā na ca me mātā na yūyam bhrātaraḥ tathā
na ca prāṇāḥ tathā rakṣyāḥ yathā bībhatsuḥ āhave
40. me pitā na ca mātā na tathā yūyam bhrātaraḥ na
ca tathā prāṇāḥ rakṣyāḥ yathā āhave bībhatsuḥ
40. Neither my father, nor my mother, nor you, my brothers, nor even my own life are to be protected as much as Arjuna (Bībhatsu) in battle.
त्रैलोक्यराज्याद्यत्किंचिद्भवेदन्यत्सुदुर्लभम् ।
नेच्छेयं सात्वताहं तद्विना पार्थं धनंजयम् ॥४१॥
41. trailokyarājyādyatkiṁcidbhavedanyatsudurlabham ,
neccheyaṁ sātvatāhaṁ tadvinā pārthaṁ dhanaṁjayam.
41. trailokyārājyāt yat kiṃcit bhavet anyat sudurlabham
na iccheyam sātvata aham tat vinā pārthaṃ dhanaṃjayam
41. sātvata aham trailokyārājyāt yat kiṃcit anyat sudurlabham
bhavet tat pārthaṃ dhanaṃjayam vinā na iccheyam
41. O Sātvata, I would not desire anything else, however rare and difficult to obtain, not even the sovereignty of the three worlds, without Arjuna (Pārtha Dhanaṃjaya).
अतः प्रहर्षः सुमहान्युयुधानाद्य मेऽभवत् ।
मृतं प्रत्यागतमिव दृष्ट्वा पार्थं धनंजयम् ॥४२॥
42. ataḥ praharṣaḥ sumahānyuyudhānādya me'bhavat ,
mṛtaṁ pratyāgatamiva dṛṣṭvā pārthaṁ dhanaṁjayam.
42. ataḥ praharṣaḥ sumahān yuyudhāna adya me abhavat
mṛtaṃ pratyāgatam iva dṛṣṭvā pārthaṃ dhanaṃjayam
42. ataḥ yuyudhāna adya me sumahān praharṣaḥ abhavat
mṛtaṃ pratyāgatam iva pārthaṃ dhanaṃjayam dṛṣṭvā
42. Therefore, a very great joy arose in me today, O Yuyudhāna, having seen Arjuna (Pārtha Dhanaṃjaya) as if returned from the dead.
अतश्च प्रहितो युद्धे मया कर्णाय राक्षसः ।
न ह्यन्यः समरे रात्रौ शक्तः कर्णं प्रबाधितुम् ॥४३॥
43. ataśca prahito yuddhe mayā karṇāya rākṣasaḥ ,
na hyanyaḥ samare rātrau śaktaḥ karṇaṁ prabādhitum.
43. ataḥ ca prahitaḥ yuddhe mayā karṇāya rākṣasaḥ na
hi anyaḥ samare rātrau śaktaḥ karṇam prabādhitum
43. ataḥ ca mayā rākṣasaḥ karṇāya yuddhe prahitaḥ,
hi anyaḥ samare rātrau karṇam prabādhitum na śaktaḥ.
43. And therefore, a demon was dispatched by me in battle for Karna's assistance, for indeed, no other (warrior) is capable of obstructing Karna in battle at night.
संजय उवाच ।
इति सात्यकये प्राह तदा देवकिनन्दनः ।
धनंजयहिते युक्तस्तत्प्रिये सततं रतः ॥४४॥
44. saṁjaya uvāca ,
iti sātyakaye prāha tadā devakinandanaḥ ,
dhanaṁjayahite yuktastatpriye satataṁ rataḥ.
44. sañjaya uvāca iti sātyakaye prāha tadā devakīnandanaḥ
dhanaṃjayahite yuktaḥ tatpriye satatam rataḥ
44. sañjaya uvāca,
iti devakīnandanaḥ dhanaṃjayahite tatpriye satatam rataḥ yuktaḥ tadā sātyakaye prāha.
44. Sanjaya said: Thus, the son of Devaki (Krishna), who was constantly engaged in the welfare of Dhananjaya (Arjuna) and devoted to his (Arjuna's) beloved interests, then spoke to Satyaki.
