युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
तस्मिन्नन्तर्हिते विप्रे राजा किमकरोत्तदा ।
भार्या चास्य महाभागा तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
tasminnantarhite vipre rājā kimakarottadā ,
bhāryā cāsya mahābhāgā tanme brūhi pitāmaha.

tadā bhāryā ca asya mahābhāgā tat me brūhi pitāmaha
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O grandfather, when that Brahmin disappeared, what did the king do then? And what did his greatly fortunate wife do? Please tell me that.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
अदृष्ट्वा स महीपालस्तमृषिं सह भार्यया ।
परिश्रान्तो निववृते व्रीडितो नष्टचेतनः ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
adṛṣṭvā sa mahīpālastamṛṣiṁ saha bhāryayā ,
pariśrānto nivavṛte vrīḍito naṣṭacetanaḥ.
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca adṛṣṭvā saḥ mahīpālaḥ tam ṛṣim saha
bhāryayā pariśrāntaḥ nivavṛte vrīḍitaḥ naṣṭacetanaḥ
2. Bhishma said: The king, having failed to find that sage (muni) with his wife, returned utterly exhausted, feeling ashamed and completely disheartened.
स प्रविश्य पुरीं दीनो नाभ्यभाषत किंचन ।
तदेव चिन्तयामास च्यवनस्य विचेष्टितम् ॥३॥
3. sa praviśya purīṁ dīno nābhyabhāṣata kiṁcana ,
tadeva cintayāmāsa cyavanasya viceṣṭitam.
3. saḥ praviśya purīm dīnaḥ na abhyabhāṣata kiñcana
tat eva cintayāmāsa cyavanasya viceṣṭitam
3. Upon entering the city, he, being dejected, said nothing. He could only think of Chyavana's conduct.
अथ शून्येन मनसा प्रविवेश गृहं नृपः ।
ददर्श शयने तस्मिञ्शयानं भृगुनन्दनम् ॥४॥
4. atha śūnyena manasā praviveśa gṛhaṁ nṛpaḥ ,
dadarśa śayane tasmiñśayānaṁ bhṛgunandanam.

dadarśa śayane tasmin śayānam bhṛgunandanam
4. Then the king, with a vacant mind, entered his home. He saw the son of Bhrigu (muni Chyavana) lying on that very bed.
विस्मितौ तौ तु दृष्ट्वा तं तदाश्चर्यं विचिन्त्य च ।
दर्शनात्तस्य च मुनेर्विश्रान्तौ संबभूवतुः ॥५॥
5. vismitau tau tu dṛṣṭvā taṁ tadāścaryaṁ vicintya ca ,
darśanāttasya ca munerviśrāntau saṁbabhūvatuḥ.
5. vismitau tau tu dṛṣṭvā tam tat āścaryam vicintya
ca darśanāt tasya ca muneḥ viśrāntau saṃbabhūvatuḥ
5. Astonished, both of them, upon seeing him and pondering that amazing sight, became relieved simply by the presence of that sage (muni).
यथास्थानं तु तौ स्थित्वा भूयस्तं संववाहतुः ।
अथापरेण पार्श्वेन सुष्वाप स महामुनिः ॥६॥
6. yathāsthānaṁ tu tau sthitvā bhūyastaṁ saṁvavāhatuḥ ,
athāpareṇa pārśvena suṣvāpa sa mahāmuniḥ.
6. yathāsthānam tu tau sthitvā bhūyaḥ tam saṃvavāhatuḥ
atha apareṇa pārśvena suṣvāpa saḥ mahāmuniḥ
6. tau yathāsthānam sthitvā bhūyaḥ tam saṃvavāhatuḥ

6. Remaining in their assigned positions, the two attendants again massaged him. Then, the great (muni) fell asleep on his other side.
तेनैव च स कालेन प्रत्यबुध्यत वीर्यवान् ।
न च तौ चक्रतुः किंचिद्विकारं भयशङ्कितौ ॥७॥
7. tenaiva ca sa kālena pratyabudhyata vīryavān ,
na ca tau cakratuḥ kiṁcidvikāraṁ bhayaśaṅkitau.
7. tena eva ca saḥ kālena pratyabudhyata vīryavān
na ca tau cakratuḥ kiñcit vikāram bhayaśaṅkitau
7. ca saḥ vīryavān tena eva kālena pratyabudhyata
ca tau bhayaśaṅkitau kiñcit vikāram na cakratuḥ
7. At that very moment, the powerful (muni) awoke. And those two (attendants), apprehensive due to fear, showed no change or disturbance.
प्रतिबुद्धस्तु स मुनिस्तौ प्रोवाच विशां पते ।
तैलाभ्यङ्गो दीयतां मे स्नास्येऽहमिति भारत ॥८॥
8. pratibuddhastu sa munistau provāca viśāṁ pate ,
tailābhyaṅgo dīyatāṁ me snāsye'hamiti bhārata.
8. pratibuddhaḥ tu saḥ muniḥ tau provāca viśām pate
tailābhyangaḥ dīyatām me snāsye aham iti bhārata
8. tu saḥ muniḥ pratibuddhaḥ tau provāca viśām pate
me tailābhyangaḥ dīyatām aham snāsye iti bhārata
8. Having awakened, that (muni) then said to those two (attendants), 'O ruler of men, let an oil massage be given to me; I shall bathe.' Thus, O Bhārata.
तथेति तौ प्रतिश्रुत्य क्षुधितौ श्रमकर्शितौ ।
शतपाकेन तैलेन महार्हेणोपतस्थतुः ॥९॥
9. tatheti tau pratiśrutya kṣudhitau śramakarśitau ,
śatapākena tailena mahārheṇopatasthatuḥ.
9. tathā iti tau pratiśrutya kṣudhitau śramakarśitau
śatapākena tailena mahārheṇa upatasthatuḥ
9. tau kṣudhitau śramakarśitau tathā iti pratiśrutya
śatapākena mahārheṇa tailena upatasthatuḥ
9. Saying 'So be it,' the two attendants, though hungry and exhausted by their labor, approached with hundred-times-refined and highly valuable oil.
ततः सुखासीनमृषिं वाग्यतौ संववाहतुः ।
न च पर्याप्तमित्याह भार्गवः सुमहातपाः ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ sukhāsīnamṛṣiṁ vāgyatau saṁvavāhatuḥ ,
na ca paryāptamityāha bhārgavaḥ sumahātapāḥ.
10. tataḥ sukhāsīnam ṛṣim vāgyatau saṃvavāhatuḥ
na ca paryāptam iti āha bhārgavaḥ sumahātapāḥ
10. tataḥ vāgyatau sukhāsīnam ṛṣim saṃvavāhatuḥ
ca sumahātapāḥ bhārgavaḥ paryāptam iti na āha
10. Then, the two, with speech controlled, attended to the comfortably seated sage (muni). However, Bhargava, who was of great austerities (tapas), did not say that it was sufficient.
यदा तौ निर्विकारौ तु लक्षयामास भार्गवः ।
तत उत्थाय सहसा स्नानशालां विवेश ह ।
कॢप्तमेव तु तत्रासीत्स्नानीयं पार्थिवोचितम् ॥११॥
11. yadā tau nirvikārau tu lakṣayāmāsa bhārgavaḥ ,
tata utthāya sahasā snānaśālāṁ viveśa ha ,
kḷptameva tu tatrāsītsnānīyaṁ pārthivocitam.
11. yadā tau nirvikārau tu lakṣayāmāsa
bhārgavaḥ tataḥ utthāya sahasā
snānaśālām viveśa ha kḷptam eva tu
tatra āsīt snānīyam pārthivocitam
11. yadā bhārgavaḥ tau nirvikārau tu lakṣayāmāsa,
tataḥ sahasā utthāya snānaśālām viveśa ha.
tu tatra pārthivocitam snānīyam kḷptam eva āsīt
11. When Bhargava noticed that the two were indeed undisturbed, he then quickly rose and entered the bathing room. There, all bathing arrangements suitable for a king were already prepared.
असत्कृत्य तु तत्सर्वं तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।
स मुनिः पुनरेवाथ नृपतेः पश्यतस्तदा ।
नासूयां चक्रतुस्तौ च दंपती भरतर्षभ ॥१२॥
12. asatkṛtya tu tatsarvaṁ tatraivāntaradhīyata ,
sa muniḥ punarevātha nṛpateḥ paśyatastadā ,
nāsūyāṁ cakratustau ca daṁpatī bharatarṣabha.
12. asatkṛtya tu tat sarvam tatra eva
antardhīyata sa muniḥ punar eva atha
nṛpateḥ paśyataḥ tadā na asūyām
cakratuḥ tau ca dampatī bharatarṣabha
12. tu sa muniḥ tat sarvam asatkṛtya eva tatra nṛpateḥ paśyataḥ tadā antardhīyata.
ca tau dampatī asūyām na cakratuḥ,

12. But having disregarded all those arrangements, that sage (muni) then disappeared right there, while the king was watching. O best of Bharatas, those two, the couple, did not show any resentment.
अथ स्नातः स भगवान्सिंहासनगतः प्रभुः ।
दर्शयामास कुशिकं सभार्यं भृगुनन्दनः ॥१३॥
13. atha snātaḥ sa bhagavānsiṁhāsanagataḥ prabhuḥ ,
darśayāmāsa kuśikaṁ sabhāryaṁ bhṛgunandanaḥ.
13. atha snātaḥ sa bhagavān siṃhāsana gataḥ prabhuḥ
darśayāmāsa kuśikam sabhāryam bhṛgunandanaḥ
13. atha snātaḥ sa bhagavān prabhuḥ siṃhāsanagataḥ
bhṛgunandanaḥ kuśikam sabhāryam darśayāmāsa
13. Then, that venerable and powerful one (bhagavān), having bathed and taken his seat on the throne, the descendant of Bhṛgu (bhārgava), revealed himself to Kuśika and his wife.
संहृष्टवदनो राजा सभार्यः कुशिको मुनिम् ।
सिद्धमन्नमिति प्रह्वो निर्विकारो न्यवेदयत् ॥१४॥
14. saṁhṛṣṭavadano rājā sabhāryaḥ kuśiko munim ,
siddhamannamiti prahvo nirvikāro nyavedayat.
14. saṃhṛṣṭa-vadanaḥ rājā sa-bhāryaḥ kuśikaḥ munim
siddham annam iti prahvaḥ nirvikāraḥ nyavedayat
14. The king, Kauśika, with a joyful face and accompanied by his wife, humbly and without hesitation informed the sage (muni) that the food was ready.
आनीयतामिति मुनिस्तं चोवाच नराधिपम् ।
राजा च समुपाजह्रे तदन्नं सह भार्यया ॥१५॥
15. ānīyatāmiti munistaṁ covāca narādhipam ,
rājā ca samupājahre tadannaṁ saha bhāryayā.
15. ānīyatām iti muniḥ tam ca uvāca narādhipam
rājā ca samupājahre tat annam saha bhāryayā
15. The sage (muni) said to that king, "Let it be brought." And the king, with his wife, then presented that food.
मांसप्रकारान्विविधाञ्शाकानि विविधानि च ।
वेसवारविकारांश्च पानकानि लघूनि च ॥१६॥
16. māṁsaprakārānvividhāñśākāni vividhāni ca ,
vesavāravikārāṁśca pānakāni laghūni ca.
16. māṃsa-prakārān vividhān śākāni vividhāni
ca vesavāra-vikārān ca pānakāni laghūni ca
16. [They brought] various kinds of meat dishes, diverse vegetables, preparations made with *vesavāra* (a spiced meat dish), and light beverages.
रसालापूपकांश्चित्रान्मोदकानथ षाडवान् ।
रसान्नानाप्रकारांश्च वन्यं च मुनिभोजनम् ॥१७॥
17. rasālāpūpakāṁścitrānmodakānatha ṣāḍavān ,
rasānnānāprakārāṁśca vanyaṁ ca munibhojanam.
17. rasālā-apūpakān citrān modakān atha ṣāḍavān
rasān nānā-prakārān ca vanyam ca muni-bhojanam
17. [They also brought] diverse *rasālā* (sweet dishes with curds), cakes, elaborate *modaka* (sweet dumplings), and *ṣāḍava* (sweet and sour condiments). Additionally, there were various kinds of flavorful dishes and forest produce suitable for the sage (muni).
फलानि च विचित्राणि तथा भोज्यानि भूरिशः ।
बदरेङ्गुदकाश्मर्यभल्लातकवटानि च ॥१८॥
18. phalāni ca vicitrāṇi tathā bhojyāni bhūriśaḥ ,
badareṅgudakāśmaryabhallātakavaṭāni ca.
18. phalāni ca vicitrāṇi tathā bhojyāni bhūriśaḥ
badareṅgudakāśmaryabhallātakavaṭāni ca
18. vicitrāṇi phalāni ca tathā bhūriśaḥ bhojyāni
badareṅgudakāśmaryabhallātakavaṭāni ca
18. And various kinds of fruits, as well as many other edibles like the fruits of the jujube (badara), ingudi (iṅguda), kāśmarya (kāśmarya), marking nut (bhallātaka), and banyan (vaṭa) trees.
गृहस्थानां च यद्भोज्यं यच्चापि वनवासिनाम् ।
सर्वमाहारयामास राजा शापभयान्मुनेः ॥१९॥
19. gṛhasthānāṁ ca yadbhojyaṁ yaccāpi vanavāsinām ,
sarvamāhārayāmāsa rājā śāpabhayānmuneḥ.
19. gṛhasthānām ca yat bhojyam yat ca api vanavāsinām
sarvam āhārayāmāsa rājā śāpabhayāt muneḥ
19. rājā muneḥ śāpabhayāt yat gṛhasthānām bhojyam
ca yat api vanavāsinām sarvam tat āhārayāmāsa
19. And whatever food belonged to householders, as well as whatever belonged to forest dwellers, the king collected it all, out of fear of the curse of the sage (muni).
अथ सर्वमुपन्यस्तमग्रतश्च्यवनस्य तत् ।
ततः सर्वं समानीय तच्च शय्यासनं मुनिः ॥२०॥
20. atha sarvamupanyastamagrataścyavanasya tat ,
tataḥ sarvaṁ samānīya tacca śayyāsanaṁ muniḥ.
20. atha sarvam upanyastam agrataḥ cyavanasya tat
tataḥ sarvam samānīya tat ca śayyāsanam muniḥ
20. atha tat sarvam cyavanasya agrataḥ upanyastam.
tataḥ muniḥ tat sarvam ca śayyāsanam samānīya
20. Then, all that had been collected was placed before Cyavana. After that, the sage (muni), having gathered all those things, including the bedding and seats...
वस्त्रैः शुभैरवच्छाद्य भोजनोपस्करैः सह ।
सर्वमादीपयामास च्यवनो भृगुनन्दनः ॥२१॥
21. vastraiḥ śubhairavacchādya bhojanopaskaraiḥ saha ,
sarvamādīpayāmāsa cyavano bhṛgunandanaḥ.
21. vastraiḥ śubhaiḥ avacchādya bhojanopaskaraiḥ
saha sarvam ādīpayāmāsa cyavanaḥ bhṛgunandanaḥ
21. bhṛgunandanaḥ cyavanaḥ śubhaiḥ vastraiḥ
bhojanopaskaraiḥ saha sarvam avacchādya ādīpayāmāsa
21. Having covered all those items with auspicious garments, along with the food preparations and utensils, Cyavana, the descendant of Bhrigu, then set everything on fire.
न च तौ चक्रतुः कोपं दंपती सुमहाव्रतौ ।
तयोः संप्रेक्षतोरेव पुनरन्तर्हितोऽभवत् ॥२२॥
22. na ca tau cakratuḥ kopaṁ daṁpatī sumahāvratau ,
tayoḥ saṁprekṣatoreva punarantarhito'bhavat.
22. na ca tau cakratuḥ kopaṃ dampatī sumahāvratī
tayoḥ saṃprekṣatoḥ eva punaḥ antarhitaḥ abhavat
22. ca sumahāvratī dampatī tau kopaṃ na cakratuḥ
tayoḥ saṃprekṣatoḥ eva punaḥ antarhitaḥ abhavat
22. Yet, that couple, who had undertaken great vows, did not become angry. Even as they watched, it disappeared again.
तत्रैव च स राजर्षिस्तस्थौ तां रजनीं तदा ।
सभार्यो वाग्यतः श्रीमान्न च तं कोप आविशत् ॥२३॥
23. tatraiva ca sa rājarṣistasthau tāṁ rajanīṁ tadā ,
sabhāryo vāgyataḥ śrīmānna ca taṁ kopa āviśat.
23. tatra eva ca sa rājarṣiḥ tasthau tāṃ rajanīṃ tadā
sabhāryaḥ vāgyataḥ śrīmān na ca taṃ kopaḥ āviśat
23. ca sa śrīmān sabhāryaḥ vāgyataḥ rājarṣiḥ tatra eva
tāṃ rajanīṃ tadā tasthau ca kopaḥ taṃ na āviśat
23. And there, that glorious royal sage, accompanied by his wife and keeping silent, remained that night. And anger did not overcome him.
नित्यं संस्कृतमन्नं तु विविधं राजवेश्मनि ।
शयनानि च मुख्यानि परिषेकाश्च पुष्कलाः ॥२४॥
24. nityaṁ saṁskṛtamannaṁ tu vividhaṁ rājaveśmani ,
śayanāni ca mukhyāni pariṣekāśca puṣkalāḥ.
24. nityam saṃskṛtam annam tu vividham rājaveśmani
śayanāni ca mukhyāni pariṣekāḥ ca puṣkalāḥ
24. tu rājaveśmani nityam vividham saṃskṛtam annam
ca mukhyāni śayanāni ca puṣkalāḥ pariṣekāḥ
24. Indeed, in the royal palace, there was always various kinds of prepared food, along with excellent beds and abundant perfumed waters.
वस्त्रं च विविधाकारमभवत्समुपार्जितम् ।
न शशाक ततो द्रष्टुमन्तरं च्यवनस्तदा ॥२५॥
25. vastraṁ ca vividhākāramabhavatsamupārjitam ,
na śaśāka tato draṣṭumantaraṁ cyavanastadā.
25. vastram ca vividhākāram abhavat samupārjitam
na śaśāka tataḥ draṣṭum antaram cyavanaḥ tadā
25. ca vividhākāram vastram samupārjitam abhavat
tadā cyavanaḥ tataḥ antaram draṣṭum na śaśāka
25. And clothes of various kinds had been acquired. But then, Chyavana was unable to perceive any fault.
पुनरेव च विप्रर्षिः प्रोवाच कुशिकं नृपम् ।
सभार्यो मां रथेनाशु वह यत्र ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥२६॥
26. punareva ca viprarṣiḥ provāca kuśikaṁ nṛpam ,
sabhāryo māṁ rathenāśu vaha yatra bravīmyaham.
26. punaḥ eva ca viprarṣiḥ provāca kuśikam nṛpam
sabhāryaḥ mām rathena āśu vaha yatra bravīmi aham
26. ca viprarṣiḥ punaḥ eva nṛpam kuśikam provāca
sabhāryaḥ mām rathena āśu vaha yatra aham bravīmi
26. And again the brahmin sage spoke to King Kuśika: "You, with your wife, quickly carry me by chariot to where I tell you."
तथेति च प्राह नृपो निर्विशङ्कस्तपोधनम् ।
क्रीडारथोऽस्तु भगवन्नुत सांग्रामिको रथः ॥२७॥
27. tatheti ca prāha nṛpo nirviśaṅkastapodhanam ,
krīḍāratho'stu bhagavannuta sāṁgrāmiko rathaḥ.
27. tathā iti ca prāha nṛpaḥ nirviśaṅkaḥ tapodhanam
krīḍārathaḥ astu bhagavan uta sāṅgrāmikaḥ rathaḥ
27. ca nṛpaḥ nirviśaṅkaḥ tapodhanam tathā iti prāha
bhagavan krīḍārathaḥ astu uta sāṅgrāmikaḥ rathaḥ
27. And the king, without hesitation, said to the ascetic: "So be it, O reverend sir. Is it to be a pleasure chariot or a battle chariot?"
इत्युक्तः स मुनिस्तेन राज्ञा हृष्टेन तद्वचः ।
च्यवनः प्रत्युवाचेदं हृष्टः परपुरंजयम् ॥२८॥
28. ityuktaḥ sa munistena rājñā hṛṣṭena tadvacaḥ ,
cyavanaḥ pratyuvācedaṁ hṛṣṭaḥ parapuraṁjayam.
28. iti uktaḥ sa muniḥ tena rājñā hṛṣṭena tat vacaḥ
cyavanaḥ pratyuvāca idam hṛṣṭaḥ parapurajayam
28. tena hṛṣṭena rājñā tat vacaḥ iti uktaḥ sa muniḥ
cyavanaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ parapurajayam idam pratyuvāca
28. Delighted by the king's words, that sage Chyavana then replied to the king, the conqueror of enemy cities, with these words.
सज्जीकुरु रथं क्षिप्रं यस्ते सांग्रामिको मतः ।
सायुधः सपताकश्च सशक्तिः कणयष्टिमान् ॥२९॥
29. sajjīkuru rathaṁ kṣipraṁ yaste sāṁgrāmiko mataḥ ,
sāyudhaḥ sapatākaśca saśaktiḥ kaṇayaṣṭimān.
29. sajjīkuru ratham kṣipram yaḥ te sāṅgrāmikaḥ
mataḥ sāyudhaḥ sapatākaḥ ca saśaktiḥ kaṇayaṣṭimān
29. kṣipram ratham sajjīkuru yaḥ te sāṅgrāmikaḥ
mataḥ sāyudhaḥ sapatākaḥ ca saśaktiḥ kaṇayaṣṭimān
29. Quickly prepare the chariot which you deem a battle chariot, (equipped) with weapons, with banners, with spears, and with lances.
किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषो युक्तस्तोमरकल्पनैः ।
गदाखड्गनिबद्धश्च परमेषुशतान्वितः ॥३०॥
30. kiṅkiṇīśatanirghoṣo yuktastomarakalpanaiḥ ,
gadākhaḍganibaddhaśca parameṣuśatānvitaḥ.
30. kiṅkiṇīśatanirghoṣaḥ yuktaḥ tomarakalpanaiḥ
gadākhaḍganibaddhaḥ ca parameṣuśatānvitaḥ
30. With the sound of a hundred small bells, it was equipped with spear-arrangements, adorned with maces and swords, and provided with hundreds of excellent arrows.
ततः स तं तथेत्युक्त्वा कल्पयित्वा महारथम् ।
भार्यां वामे धुरि तदा चात्मानं दक्षिणे तथा ॥३१॥
31. tataḥ sa taṁ tathetyuktvā kalpayitvā mahāratham ,
bhāryāṁ vāme dhuri tadā cātmānaṁ dakṣiṇe tathā.
31. tataḥ saḥ tam tathā iti uktvā kalpayitvā mahāratham
bhāryām vāme dhuri tadā ca ātmānam dakṣiṇe tathā
31. Then he, saying 'so be it' to him, and having prepared the great chariot, placed his wife on the left side of the yoke and himself (ātman) likewise on the right.
त्रिदंष्ट्रं वज्रसूच्यग्रं प्रतोदं तत्र चादधत् ।
सर्वमेतत्ततो दत्त्वा नृपो वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥३२॥
32. tridaṁṣṭraṁ vajrasūcyagraṁ pratodaṁ tatra cādadhat ,
sarvametattato dattvā nṛpo vākyamathābravīt.
32. tridaṃṣṭram vajrasūcyagram pratodam tatra ca ādadhat
sarvam etat tataḥ dattvā nṛpaḥ vākyam atha abravīt
32. He then placed there a three-pronged goad with a tip sharp as a diamond needle. After providing all these things, the king then spoke these words.
भगवन्क्व रथो यातु ब्रवीतु भृगुनन्दनः ।
यत्र वक्ष्यसि विप्रर्षे तत्र यास्यति ते रथः ॥३३॥
33. bhagavankva ratho yātu bravītu bhṛgunandanaḥ ,
yatra vakṣyasi viprarṣe tatra yāsyati te rathaḥ.
33. bhagavan kva rathaḥ yātu bravītu bhṛgunandanaḥ
yatra vakṣyasi viprarṣe tatra yāsyati te rathaḥ
33. O venerable one (bhagavan), where should the chariot go? Let the descendant of Bhṛgu speak. O brahmin sage, wherever you direct, there your chariot will proceed.
एवमुक्तस्तु भगवान्प्रत्युवाचाथ तं नृपम् ।
इतःप्रभृति यातव्यं पदकं पदकं शनैः ॥३४॥
34. evamuktastu bhagavānpratyuvācātha taṁ nṛpam ,
itaḥprabhṛti yātavyaṁ padakaṁ padakaṁ śanaiḥ.
34. evam uktaḥ tu bhagavān pratyuvāca atha tam nṛpam

34. The venerable one, thus addressed, then replied to that king: "From now on, we must proceed slowly, step by step."
श्रमो मम यथा न स्यात्तथा मे छन्दचारिणौ ।
सुखं चैवास्मि वोढव्यो जनः सर्वश्च पश्यतु ॥३५॥
35. śramo mama yathā na syāttathā me chandacāriṇau ,
sukhaṁ caivāsmi voḍhavyo janaḥ sarvaśca paśyatu.

sukham ca eva asmi voḍhavyaḥ janaḥ sarvaḥ ca paśyatu

35. So that I do not become tired, let me be carried comfortably by my two free-moving bearers. And let everyone witness this.
नोत्सार्यः पथिकः कश्चित्तेभ्यो दास्याम्यहं वसु ।
ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च ये कामानर्थयिष्यन्ति मां पथि ॥३६॥
36. notsāryaḥ pathikaḥ kaścittebhyo dāsyāmyahaṁ vasu ,
brāhmaṇebhyaśca ye kāmānarthayiṣyanti māṁ pathi.
36. na utsāryaḥ pathikaḥ kaścit tebhyaḥ dāsyāmi aham vasu
| brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ca ye kāmān arthayiṣyanti mām pathi

36. No traveler is to be driven away. I will give wealth to them, and to those brahmins who will ask me for their desires along the way.
सर्वं दास्याम्यशेषेण धनं रत्नानि चैव हि ।
क्रियतां निखिलेनैतन्मा विचारय पार्थिव ॥३७॥
37. sarvaṁ dāsyāmyaśeṣeṇa dhanaṁ ratnāni caiva hi ,
kriyatāṁ nikhilenaitanmā vicāraya pārthiva.
37. sarvam dāsyāmi aśeṣeṇa dhanam ratnāni ca eva hi
| kriyatām nikhilena etat mā vicāraya pārthiva

37. I will give everything - all wealth and jewels - completely, without any remainder. Let this be done entirely. O king, do not hesitate.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा भृत्यानथाब्रवीत् ।
यद्यद्ब्रूयान्मुनिस्तत्तत्सर्वं देयमशङ्कितैः ॥३८॥
38. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā rājā bhṛtyānathābravīt ,
yadyadbrūyānmunistattatsarvaṁ deyamaśaṅkitaiḥ.
38. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā rājā bhṛtyān atha abravīt
yadyat brūyāt muniḥ tat tat sarvam deyam aśaṅkitaiḥ

38. Hearing his words, the king then instructed his servants: "Whatever the ascetic (muni) requests, all of it must be given without hesitation."
ततो रत्नान्यनेकानि स्त्रियो युग्यमजाविकम् ।
कृताकृतं च कनकं गजेन्द्राश्चाचलोपमाः ॥३९॥
39. tato ratnānyanekāni striyo yugyamajāvikam ,
kṛtākṛtaṁ ca kanakaṁ gajendrāścācalopamāḥ.
39. tataḥ ratnāni anekāni striyaḥ yugyam ajāvikam
kṛtākṛtam ca kanakam gajendrāḥ ca acalopamāḥ

39. Then, many jewels, women, draft animals, goats and sheep, refined and unrefined gold, and lordly elephants resembling mountains (were gathered).
अन्वगच्छन्त तमृषिं राजामात्याश्च सर्वशः ।
हाहाभूतं च तत्सर्वमासीन्नगरमार्तिमत् ॥४०॥
40. anvagacchanta tamṛṣiṁ rājāmātyāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
hāhābhūtaṁ ca tatsarvamāsīnnagaramārtimat.
40. anvagacchantā tam ṛṣim rājāmātyāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
hāhābhūtam ca tat sarvam āsīt nagaram ārtimat

40. The king's ministers and all (his people) followed that sage (ṛṣi). The entire city became filled with lamentation and distress.
तौ तीक्ष्णाग्रेण सहसा प्रतोदेन प्रचोदितौ ।
पृष्ठे विद्धौ कटे चैव निर्विकारौ तमूहतुः ॥४१॥
41. tau tīkṣṇāgreṇa sahasā pratodena pracoditau ,
pṛṣṭhe viddhau kaṭe caiva nirvikārau tamūhatuḥ.

41. Though suddenly spurred with a sharp-pointed goad and even pricked on their backs and flanks, those two (elephants) carried him without showing any change or reaction.
वेपमानौ विराहारौ पञ्चाशद्रात्रकर्शितौ ।
कथंचिदूहतुर्वीरौ दंपती तं रथोत्तमम् ॥४२॥
42. vepamānau virāhārau pañcāśadrātrakarśitau ,
kathaṁcidūhaturvīrau daṁpatī taṁ rathottamam.

42. The trembling couple, deprived of food and shelter, weakened by fifty nights, those two heroes, husband and wife, somehow pulled that excellent chariot.
बहुशो भृशविद्धौ तौ क्षरमाणौ क्षतोद्भवम् ।
ददृशाते महाराज पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ ॥४३॥
43. bahuśo bhṛśaviddhau tau kṣaramāṇau kṣatodbhavam ,
dadṛśāte mahārāja puṣpitāviva kiṁśukau.

43. O great king, those two, repeatedly and deeply wounded, with exudate flowing from their injuries, appeared like two blossoming palāśa (kiṃśuka) trees.
तौ दृष्ट्वा पौरवर्गस्तु भृशं शोकपरायणः ।
अभिशापभयात्त्रस्तो न च किंचिदुवाच ह ॥४४॥
44. tau dṛṣṭvā pauravargastu bhṛśaṁ śokaparāyaṇaḥ ,
abhiśāpabhayāttrasto na ca kiṁciduvāca ha.
44. tau dṛṣṭvā paura-vargaḥ tu bhṛśam śoka-parāyaṇaḥ
abhiśāpa-bhayāt trastaḥ na ca kiṃcit uvāca ha

44. But having seen those two, the assembly of citizens was deeply overwhelmed by sorrow; yet, terrified by the fear of a curse, they said nothing at all.
द्वन्द्वशश्चाब्रुवन्सर्वे पश्यध्वं तपसो बलम् ।
क्रुद्धा अपि मुनिश्रेष्ठं वीक्षितुं नैव शक्नुमः ॥४५॥
45. dvandvaśaścābruvansarve paśyadhvaṁ tapaso balam ,
kruddhā api muniśreṣṭhaṁ vīkṣituṁ naiva śaknumaḥ.
45. dvandvaśaḥ ca abruvan sarve paśyadhvam tapasaḥ balam
kruddhāḥ api muni-śreṣṭham vīkṣitum na eva śaknumaḥ
45. sarve ca dvandvaśaḥ abruvan paśyadhvam tapasaḥ balam
api kruddhāḥ vīkṣitum muni-śreṣṭham na eva śaknumaḥ
45. And all of them said in pairs, 'Behold the power of his asceticism (tapas)! Even though we are angry, we are indeed not able to look at the best of sages (muniśreṣṭha).'
अहो भगवतो वीर्यं महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः ।
राज्ञश्चापि सभार्यस्य धैर्यं पश्यत यादृशम् ॥४६॥
46. aho bhagavato vīryaṁ maharṣerbhāvitātmanaḥ ,
rājñaścāpi sabhāryasya dhairyaṁ paśyata yādṛśam.
46. aho bhagavataḥ vīryam maharṣeḥ bhāvitātmanaḥ
rājñaḥ ca api sabhāryasya dhairyam paśyata yādṛśam
46. aho bhagavataḥ bhāvitātmanaḥ maharṣeḥ vīryam ca

46. Oh, behold the immense power of the venerable great sage, whose inner self (ātman) is cultivated! And observe the remarkable fortitude of the king, who is accompanied by his wife.
श्रान्तावपि हि कृच्छ्रेण रथमेतं समूहतुः ।
न चैतयोर्विकारं वै ददर्श भृगुनन्दनः ॥४७॥
47. śrāntāvapi hi kṛcchreṇa rathametaṁ samūhatuḥ ,
na caitayorvikāraṁ vai dadarśa bhṛgunandanaḥ.
47. śrāntau api hi kṛcchreṇa ratham etam samūhatuḥ
na ca etayoḥ vikāram vai dadarśa bhṛgunandanaḥ
47. hi śrāntau api kṛcchreṇa etam ratham samūhatuḥ

47. Indeed, although both were exhausted, they pulled this chariot with great difficulty. Yet, the son of Bhṛgu did not observe any sign of distress in either of them.
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततः स निर्विकारौ तौ दृष्ट्वा भृगुकुलोद्वहः ।
वसु विश्राणयामास यथा वैश्रवणस्तथा ॥४८॥
48. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tataḥ sa nirvikārau tau dṛṣṭvā bhṛgukulodvahaḥ ,
vasu viśrāṇayāmāsa yathā vaiśravaṇastathā.

48. Bhīṣma said: Then, the exalted member of the Bhṛgu lineage, seeing those two (the king and his wife) completely unperturbed, distributed wealth, just as Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera) would.
तत्रापि राजा प्रीतात्मा यथाज्ञप्तमथाकरोत् ।
ततोऽस्य भगवान्प्रीतो बभूव मुनिसत्तमः ॥४९॥
49. tatrāpi rājā prītātmā yathājñaptamathākarot ,
tato'sya bhagavānprīto babhūva munisattamaḥ.
49. tatra api rājā prītātmā yathā ājñaptam atha akarot
tataḥ asya bhagavān prītaḥ babhūva munisattamaḥ

49. Even in that situation, the king, with a contented heart (ātman), acted exactly as instructed. Consequently, the venerable chief of sages became greatly pleased with him.
अवतीर्य रथश्रेष्ठाद्दंपती तौ मुमोच ह ।
विमोच्य चैतौ विधिवत्ततो वाक्यमुवाच ह ॥५०॥
50. avatīrya rathaśreṣṭhāddaṁpatī tau mumoca ha ,
vimocya caitau vidhivattato vākyamuvāca ha.
50. avatīrya rathaśreṣṭhāt dampatī tau mumoca ha
vimocya ca etau vidhivat tataḥ vākyam uvāca ha
50. rathaśreṣṭhāt avatīrya tau dampatī mumoca ha

50. Having descended from the excellent chariot, he indeed helped that couple disembark. And after settling them properly, he then spoke these words.
स्निग्धगम्भीरया वाचा भार्गवः सुप्रसन्नया ।
ददानि वां वरं श्रेष्ठं तद्ब्रूतामिति भारत ॥५१॥
51. snigdhagambhīrayā vācā bhārgavaḥ suprasannayā ,
dadāni vāṁ varaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ tadbrūtāmiti bhārata.
51. snigdhagambhīrayā vācā bhārgavaḥ suprasannayā
dadāni vām varam śreṣṭham tat brūtām iti bhārata

51. With a soft, deep, and very pleased voice, Bhargava spoke: "I shall grant you two a supreme boon; therefore, tell me what it is, O (Bhārata)."
सुकुमारौ च तौ विद्वान्कराभ्यां मुनिसत्तमः ।
पस्पर्शामृतकल्पाभ्यां स्नेहाद्भरतसत्तम ॥५२॥
52. sukumārau ca tau vidvānkarābhyāṁ munisattamaḥ ,
pasparśāmṛtakalpābhyāṁ snehādbharatasattama.
52. sukumārau ca tau vidvān karābhyām munisattamaḥ
pasparśa amṛtakalpābhyām snehāt bharatasattama
52. bharatasattama ca vidvān munisattamaḥ snehāt

52. And the wise one, the best of sages, out of affection, touched those two delicate ones with his two hands, which were like nectar, O best of (Bhāratas).
अथाब्रवीन्नृपो वाक्यं श्रमो नास्त्यावयोरिह ।
विश्रान्तौ स्वः प्रभावात्ते ध्यानेनैवेति भार्गव ॥५३॥
53. athābravīnnṛpo vākyaṁ śramo nāstyāvayoriha ,
viśrāntau svaḥ prabhāvātte dhyānenaiveti bhārgava.
53. atha abravīt nṛpaḥ vākyam śramaḥ na asti āvayoḥ iha
viśrāntau svaḥ prabhāvāt te dhyānena eva iti bhārgava
53. atha nṛpaḥ vākyam abravīt bhārgava iha āvayoḥ śramaḥ
na asti te prabhāvāt dhyānena eva viśrāntau svaḥ iti
53. Then the king spoke these words: "There is no weariness for us two here. By your influence and solely by (your) meditation (dhyāna), we are indeed refreshed, O (Bhārgava)."
अथ तौ भगवान्प्राह प्रहृष्टश्च्यवनस्तदा ।
न वृथा व्याहृतं पूर्वं यन्मया तद्भविष्यति ॥५४॥
54. atha tau bhagavānprāha prahṛṣṭaścyavanastadā ,
na vṛthā vyāhṛtaṁ pūrvaṁ yanmayā tadbhaviṣyati.
54. atha tau bhagavān prāha prahr̥ṣṭaḥ cyavanaḥ tadā
na vr̥thā vyāhr̥tam pūrvam yat mayā tat bhaviṣyati
54. atha tadā prahr̥ṣṭaḥ bhagavān cyavanaḥ tau prāha
mayā yat pūrvam vyāhr̥tam tat vr̥thā na bhaviṣyati
54. Then, the revered Cyavana, delighted, spoke to those two: 'What was said by me before will not be in vain; that will surely come to pass.'
रमणीयः समुद्देशो गङ्गातीरमिदं शुभम् ।
कंचित्कालं व्रतपरो निवत्स्यामीह पार्थिव ॥५५॥
55. ramaṇīyaḥ samuddeśo gaṅgātīramidaṁ śubham ,
kaṁcitkālaṁ vrataparo nivatsyāmīha pārthiva.
55. ramaṇīyaḥ samuddeśaḥ gaṅgātīram idam śubham
kañcit kālam vrataparaḥ nivatsyāmi iha pārthiva
55. pārthiva,
samuddeśaḥ ramaṇīyaḥ,
idam gaṅgātīram śubham kañcit kālam vrataparaḥ iha nivatsyāmi
55. This charming region, this auspicious bank of the Gaṅgā, is beautiful. O king (pārthiva), I shall reside here for some time, dedicated to my vows.
गम्यतां स्वपुरं पुत्र विश्रान्तः पुनरेष्यसि ।
इहस्थं मां सभार्यस्त्वं द्रष्टासि श्वो नराधिप ॥५६॥
56. gamyatāṁ svapuraṁ putra viśrāntaḥ punareṣyasi ,
ihasthaṁ māṁ sabhāryastvaṁ draṣṭāsi śvo narādhipa.
56. gamyatām svapuram putra viśrāntaḥ punaḥ eṣyasi
ihastham mām sabhāryaḥ tvam draṣṭā asi śvaḥ narādhipa
56. putra,
svapuram gamyatām viśrāntaḥ punaḥ eṣyasi narādhipa,
tvam sabhāryaḥ śvaḥ ihastham mām draṣṭā asi
56. Go to your own city, my son (putra). Having rested, you will return again. Tomorrow, O ruler (narādhipa), you, accompanied by your wife, will see me dwelling here.
न च मन्युस्त्वया कार्यः श्रेयस्ते समुपस्थितम् ।
यत्काङ्क्षितं हृदिस्थं ते तत्सर्वं संभविष्यति ॥५७॥
57. na ca manyustvayā kāryaḥ śreyaste samupasthitam ,
yatkāṅkṣitaṁ hṛdisthaṁ te tatsarvaṁ saṁbhaviṣyati.
57. na ca manyuḥ tvayā kāryaḥ śreyaḥ te samupasthitam
yat kāṅkṣitam hr̥distham te tat sarvam saṁbhaviṣyati
57. ca tvayā manyuḥ na kāryaḥ te śreyaḥ samupasthitam te
hr̥distham yat kāṅkṣitam tat sarvam saṁbhaviṣyati
57. And you should not harbor any anger; your welfare has arrived. Whatever you desired in your heart, all that will surely come to pass.
इत्येवमुक्तः कुशिकः प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ।
प्रोवाच मुनिशार्दूलमिदं वचनमर्थवत् ॥५८॥
58. ityevamuktaḥ kuśikaḥ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā ,
provāca muniśārdūlamidaṁ vacanamarthavat.
58. iti eva uktaḥ kuśikaḥ prahṛṣṭena antarātmanā
provāca muniśārdūlam idam vacanam arthavat
58. iti eva uktaḥ kuśikaḥ prahṛṣṭena antarātmanā
muniśārdūlam idam arthavat vacanam provāca
58. Thus spoken to, Kuśika, with a greatly delighted inner self, spoke these meaningful words to the foremost among sages.
न मे मन्युर्महाभाग पूतोऽस्मि भगवंस्त्वया ।
संवृत्तौ यौवनस्थौ स्वो वपुष्मन्तौ बलान्वितौ ॥५९॥
59. na me manyurmahābhāga pūto'smi bhagavaṁstvayā ,
saṁvṛttau yauvanasthau svo vapuṣmantau balānvitau.
59. na me manyuḥ mahābhāga pūtaḥ asmi bhagavan tvayā
saṃvṛttau yauvanasthau svaḥ vapuṣmantau balānvitau
59. mahābhāga bhagavan me manyuḥ na tvayā pūtaḥ asmi

59. O venerable and greatly fortunate one, I bear no anger; I have been purified by you. Both (my sons) have become young adults, well-built, and endowed with strength.
प्रतोदेन व्रणा ये मे सभार्यस्य कृतास्त्वया ।
तान्न पश्यामि गात्रेषु स्वस्थोऽस्मि सह भार्यया ॥६०॥
60. pratodena vraṇā ye me sabhāryasya kṛtāstvayā ,
tānna paśyāmi gātreṣu svastho'smi saha bhāryayā.
60. pratodena vraṇāḥ ye me sabhāryasya kṛtāḥ tvayā
tān na paśyāmi gātreṣu svasthaḥ asmi saha bhāryayā

60. I no longer see on my body those wounds that were inflicted upon me and my wife by your goad. I am now healthy, together with my wife.
इमां च देवीं पश्यामि मुने दिव्याप्सरोपमाम् ।
श्रिया परमया युक्तां यथादृष्टां मया पुरा ॥६१॥
61. imāṁ ca devīṁ paśyāmi mune divyāpsaropamām ,
śriyā paramayā yuktāṁ yathādṛṣṭāṁ mayā purā.

61. And, O sage, I behold this goddess, who resembles a divine nymph (apsaras) and is endowed with supreme beauty, just as she was seen by me previously.
तव प्रसादात्संवृत्तमिदं सर्वं महामुने ।
नैतच्चित्रं तु भगवंस्त्वयि सत्यपराक्रम ॥६२॥
62. tava prasādātsaṁvṛttamidaṁ sarvaṁ mahāmune ,
naitaccitraṁ tu bhagavaṁstvayi satyaparākrama.
62. tava prasādāt saṃvṛttam idam sarvam mahāmune na
etat citram tu bhagavan tvayi satyaparākrama

62. O great sage (mahāmuni), all this has come to pass by your grace. Indeed, this is not surprising in you, O revered one (bhagavat) of true valor.
इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाचेदं च्यवनः कुशिकं तदा ।
आगच्छेथाः सभार्यश्च त्वमिहेति नराधिप ॥६३॥
63. ityuktaḥ pratyuvācedaṁ cyavanaḥ kuśikaṁ tadā ,
āgacchethāḥ sabhāryaśca tvamiheti narādhipa.
63. iti uktaḥ pratyuvāca idam cyavanaḥ kuśikam tadā
āgacchethāḥ sabhāryaḥ ca tvam iha iti narādhipa

63. Thus addressed, Chyavana then replied to Kuśika, saying: 'O king, you should come here with your wife!'
इत्युक्तः समनुज्ञातो राजर्षिरभिवाद्य तम् ।
प्रययौ वपुषा युक्तो नगरं देवराजवत् ॥६४॥
64. ityuktaḥ samanujñāto rājarṣirabhivādya tam ,
prayayau vapuṣā yukto nagaraṁ devarājavat.
64. iti uktaḥ samanujñātaḥ rājarṣiḥ abhivādya tam
prayayau vapuṣā yuktaḥ nagaram devarājavat

64. Thus addressed and granted leave, the royal sage (rājarṣi), having saluted him (Chyavana), departed for the city, splendid like the king of gods.
तत एनमुपाजग्मुरमात्याः सपुरोहिताः ।
बलस्था गणिकायुक्ताः सर्वाः प्रकृतयस्तथा ॥६५॥
65. tata enamupājagmuramātyāḥ sapurohitāḥ ,
balasthā gaṇikāyuktāḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayastathā.
65. tataḥ enam upājagmuḥ amātyāḥ sapurohitāḥ
balasthāḥ gaṇikāyuktāḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ tathā
65. tataḥ sapurohitāḥ amātyāḥ balasthāḥ gaṇikāyuktāḥ
tathā sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ enam upājagmuḥ
65. Then, all his subjects (prakṛti) – the ministers with their priests, the military leaders, and those accompanied by courtesans – approached him.
तैर्वृतः कुशिको राजा श्रिया परमया ज्वलन् ।
प्रविवेश पुरं हृष्टः पूज्यमानोऽथ बन्दिभिः ॥६६॥
66. tairvṛtaḥ kuśiko rājā śriyā paramayā jvalan ,
praviveśa puraṁ hṛṣṭaḥ pūjyamāno'tha bandibhiḥ.
66. taiḥ vṛtaḥ kuśikaḥ rājā śriyā paramayā jvalan
praviveśa puram hṛṣṭaḥ pūjyamānaḥ atha bandibhiḥ
66. rājā kuśikaḥ taiḥ vṛtaḥ paramayā śriyā jvalan

66. King Kuśika, surrounded by them, glowing with supreme splendor (śrī), joyfully entered the city, being honored by the bards.
ततः प्रविश्य नगरं कृत्वा सर्वाह्णिकक्रियाः ।
भुक्त्वा सभार्यो रजनीमुवास स महीपतिः ॥६७॥
67. tataḥ praviśya nagaraṁ kṛtvā sarvāhṇikakriyāḥ ,
bhuktvā sabhāryo rajanīmuvāsa sa mahīpatiḥ.

bhuktvā sabhāryaḥ rajanīm uvāsa saḥ mahīpatiḥ

67. Then, having entered the city, performed all his daily rituals, and eaten, that king resided there with his wife through the night.
ततस्तु तौ नवमभिवीक्ष्य यौवनं परस्परं विगतजराविवामरौ ।
ननन्दतुः शयनगतौ वपुर्धरौ श्रिया युतौ द्विजवरदत्तया तया ॥६८॥
68. tatastu tau navamabhivīkṣya yauvanaṁ; parasparaṁ vigatajarāvivāmarau ,
nanandatuḥ śayanagatau vapurdharau; śriyā yutau dvijavaradattayā tayā.
68. tataḥ tu tau navam abhivīkṣya yauvanam
parasparam vigatajarau iva amarau
nanandatuḥ śayanagatau vapurdharau
śriyā yutau dvijavaradattayā tayā
68. tataḥ tu tau parasparam navam yauvanam

68. Then, observing each other's renewed youth, those two, as if immortal and free from old age, rejoiced. Lying on their bed, embodied and endowed with that splendor (śrī) bestowed by the excellent (dvija) brahmin, they were filled with joy.
स चाप्यृषिर्भृगुकुलकीर्तिवर्धनस्तपोधनो वनमभिराममृद्धिमत् ।
मनीषया बहुविधरत्नभूषितं ससर्ज यन्नास्ति शतक्रतोरपि ॥६९॥
69. sa cāpyṛṣirbhṛgukulakīrtivardhana;stapodhano vanamabhirāmamṛddhimat ,
manīṣayā bahuvidharatnabhūṣitaṁ; sasarja yannāsti śatakratorapi.
69. saḥ ca api ṛṣiḥ bhṛgukulakīrtivardhanaḥ
tapodhanaḥ vanam abhirāmam
ṛddhimat manīṣayā bahuvidharatnabhūṣitam
sasarja yat na asti śatakratoḥ api
69. ca saḥ ṛṣiḥ bhṛgukulakīrtivardhanaḥ
tapodhanaḥ api manīṣayā abhirāmam
ṛddhimat bahuvidharatnabhūṣitam vanam
sasarja yat śatakratoḥ api na asti
69. And that sage (ṛṣi), the enhancer of the Bhṛgu family's fame, whose wealth was (tapas) austerity, by his mind's power created a forest that was delightful, prosperous, and adorned with many kinds of jewels, a forest that even Indra (Śatakratu) did not possess.
