Sañjaya said: "O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), at the break of dawn, the great-souled (ātman) Bhīṣma, filled with anger, advanced towards the enemies, surrounded by his entire army, leading the armies of the Bhāratas."

O King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), that best of kings (Bhīṣma), surrounded by those great, heroic, splendid, and valiant supreme charioteers, and by prominent kings, shone brilliantly, just like Vajrapāṇi (Indra) surrounded by the gods.

In the vanguard of that army, the great banners, which were fixed, constantly swaying, and shining with very red, yellow, black, and pale white colors, placed on the shoulders of large elephants, shone brilliantly.

That army, led by King Śāntanu's son (Bhīṣma), with its great charioteers, elephants, and horses, shone like the cloud-laden sky at the beginning of the rainy season, accompanied by lightning and thunder.

Your men (the Kauravas) saw that principal battle formation, which was being skillfully moved forward with an uplifted weapon by Arjuna (Kirīṭin), the great chariot-warrior of the world, discreetly, and which appeared vast, covered with four times four thousand serpent-like elements.

Indeed, just as a battle formation was arranged on the previous day by Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharma) and the delight of the Kurus, so in the same way, the chiefs of the Cedis, along with the chiefs of the Pāñcālas, took up their respective positions.

Excellent missiles, adorned with constellations of golden stars, were discharged by the heroes. Being torn apart by axes, spears, and swords, they fell upon the earth.

Some charioteers (warriors) along with their drivers fell down, crushed by the tusks and mighty trunks of elephants. And the best of elephants, struck by the arrows of the best of charioteers, also fell upon the earth.

Hearing the distressed cries of the young horsemen and foot soldiers who were thrown down by the speed and might of the elephant herds, and who were struck by tusks and powerful limbs, people fell to the ground.

Bhishma saw Arjuna's chariot (marked by the banner of the monkey king), which was being surrounded by great charioteers. This chariot had generated great fear among the young horsemen and foot soldiers amidst the chaotic elephants, horses, and chariots.

The son of Śāṃtanu (Bhīṣma), whose palmyra banner was raised five palm-trees high and whose valorous movement was impelled by the speed of excellent horses, rushed towards the crowned one (Arjuna), whose path was made bright by great weapons, arrows, and thunderbolts.

O King, in the same manner, Kṛpa, Śalya, Viviṃśati, Duryodhana, and Saumadatti (Bhuriśravas), with Droṇa at the forefront, rushed towards Indra's son (Arjuna), who was comparable to Indra in might.

Having effortlessly countered the great weapons of those mighty charioteers, the son of Kṛṣṇā (Abhimanyu), whose actions were unimpeded, shone like the glorious fire (Agni) that, having entered the sacrificial hall, glows with a garland of flames from oblations offered with great mantras.

Then, the resolute (adīnasattva) Bhishma, swiftly turning the slaughter of his enemies into a river of blood and foam, advanced past Saubhadra (Abhimanyu) and moved towards Partha (Arjuna), the great charioteer.

The great-souled (mahātman) Bhishma swiftly rained upon him - the best among all bow-wielders, tireless in action (asaktabkarma), and whose banner bore the monkey-king (kapi-rāja-ketu) - with floods of pure arrows and "bhalla" arrows.

The people, along with the Kurus and Sṛñjayas, witnessed that single combat between two chariots (dvairatha) involving Bhishma and Dhananjaya (Arjuna). It was of such a kind (evaṃvidham), filled with the terrible roar of their bows (kārmukabhīmanādam), and bravely fought (adīnavat) by those two best among noble men (satpuruṣottama).
