शौनक उवाच ।
कोऽपराधो महेन्द्रस्य कः प्रमादश्च सूतज ।
तपसा वालखिल्यानां संभूतो गरुडः कथम् ॥१॥
1. śaunaka uvāca ,
ko'parādho mahendrasya kaḥ pramādaśca sūtaja ,
tapasā vālakhilyānāṁ saṁbhūto garuḍaḥ katham.

1. Shaunaka said: 'O son of Sūta, what was Mahendra's transgression, and what was his negligence? And how was Garuḍa born from the austerities of the Vālakhilyas?'
कश्यपस्य द्विजातेश्च कथं वै पक्षिराट्सुतः ।
अधृष्यः सर्वभूतानामवध्यश्चाभवत्कथम् ॥२॥
2. kaśyapasya dvijāteśca kathaṁ vai pakṣirāṭsutaḥ ,
adhṛṣyaḥ sarvabhūtānāmavadhyaścābhavatkatham.
2. kaśyapasya dvijāteḥ ca katham vai pakṣirāṭsutaḥ
adhṛṣyaḥ sarvabhūtānām avadhyaḥ ca abhavat katham
2. And how indeed did the son of Kaśyapa, the Brahmin, become the king of birds, unassailable by all beings, and unslayable?
कथं च कामचारी स कामवीर्यश्च खेचरः ।
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं पुराणे यदि पठ्यते ॥३॥
3. kathaṁ ca kāmacārī sa kāmavīryaśca khecaraḥ ,
etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotuṁ purāṇe yadi paṭhyate.
3. kathaṃ ca kāmacārī saḥ kāmavīryaḥ ca khecaraḥ
etat icchāmi aham śrotum purāṇe yadi paṭhyate
3. And how is he, who moves at will, whose power is as he wishes, and who traverses the sky? I wish to hear this, if it is recounted in the Purāṇa.
सूत उवाच ।
विषयोऽयं पुराणस्य यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ।
शृणु मे वदतः सर्वमेतत्संक्षेपतो द्विज ॥४॥
4. sūta uvāca ,
viṣayo'yaṁ purāṇasya yanmāṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi ,
śṛṇu me vadataḥ sarvametatsaṁkṣepato dvija.
4. sūtaḥ uvāca viṣayaḥ ayam purāṇasya yat mām tvam
paripṛcchasi śṛṇu me vadataḥ sarvam etat saṃkṣepataḥ dvija
4. Sūta said: 'This subject, about which you question me, pertains to the Purāṇa. Listen, O Dvija, as I recount all this briefly.'
यजतः पुत्रकामस्य कश्यपस्य प्रजापतेः ।
साहाय्यमृषयो देवा गन्धर्वाश्च ददुः किल ॥५॥
5. yajataḥ putrakāmasya kaśyapasya prajāpateḥ ,
sāhāyyamṛṣayo devā gandharvāśca daduḥ kila.
5. yajataḥ putrakāmasya kaśyapasya prajāpateḥ
sāhāyyam ṛṣayaḥ devāḥ gandharvāḥ ca daduḥ kila
5. While Prajāpati Kaśyapa, desirous of sons, was performing a sacrifice, the Rishis, Devas, and Gandharvas certainly rendered him assistance.
तत्रेध्मानयने शक्रो नियुक्तः कश्यपेन ह ।
मुनयो वालखिल्याश्च ये चान्ये देवतागणाः ॥६॥
6. tatredhmānayane śakro niyuktaḥ kaśyapena ha ,
munayo vālakhilyāśca ye cānye devatāgaṇāḥ.
6. tatra idhmānayane śakraḥ niyuktaḥ kaśyapena ha
munayaḥ vālakhilyāḥ ca ye ca anye devatāgaṇāḥ
6. There, in the task of gathering firewood, Śakra (Indra) was appointed by Kaśyapa, it is said. Also, the Vālakhilya sages and other groups of deities were engaged in this task.
शक्रस्तु वीर्यसदृशमिध्मभारं गिरिप्रभम् ।
समुद्यम्यानयामास नातिकृच्छ्रादिव प्रभुः ॥७॥
7. śakrastu vīryasadṛśamidhmabhāraṁ giriprabham ,
samudyamyānayāmāsa nātikṛcchrādiva prabhuḥ.
7. śakraḥ tu vīryasadṛśam idhmabhāram giriprabham
samudyāmya ānayāmāsa na ati kṛcchrāt iva prabhuḥ
7. But Śakra, like a lord, lifted and brought a load of firewood, resembling a mountain and equal to his immense strength, not with any great difficulty, as it were.
अथापश्यदृषीन्ह्रस्वानङ्गुष्ठोदरपर्वणः ।
पलाशवृन्तिकामेकां सहितान्वहतः पथि ॥८॥
8. athāpaśyadṛṣīnhrasvānaṅguṣṭhodaraparvaṇaḥ ,
palāśavṛntikāmekāṁ sahitānvahataḥ pathi.
8. atha apaśyat ṛṣīn hrasvān aṅguṣṭhodaraparvaṇaḥ
palāśavṛntikām ekām sahitān vahataḥ pathi
8. Then he saw short sages, the size of a thumb's joint, carrying a single palāśa leaf-stalk together on the path.
प्रलीनान्स्वेष्विवाङ्गेषु निराहारांस्तपोधनान् ।
क्लिश्यमानान्मन्दबलान्गोष्पदे संप्लुतोदके ॥९॥
9. pralīnānsveṣvivāṅgeṣu nirāhārāṁstapodhanān ,
kliśyamānānmandabalāngoṣpade saṁplutodake.
9. pralīnān sveṣu iva aṅgeṣu nirāhārān tapodhanān
kliśyamānān mandabalān goṣpade samplutodake
9. (He saw them) as if absorbed into their own bodies, subsisting without food, whose only wealth was their austerities, suffering and weak, (standing) in a cow's hoofprint filled with water.
तांश्च सर्वान्स्मयाविष्टो वीर्योन्मत्तः पुरंदरः ।
अवहस्यात्यगाच्छीघ्रं लङ्घयित्वावमन्य च ॥१०॥
10. tāṁśca sarvānsmayāviṣṭo vīryonmattaḥ puraṁdaraḥ ,
avahasyātyagācchīghraṁ laṅghayitvāvamanya ca.
10. tān ca sarvān smayāviṣṭaḥ vīryonmattaḥ purandaraḥ
avahasya atyagāt śīghram laṅghayitvā avamanya ca
10. And Indra, arrogant and intoxicated by his own power, quickly passed by all those (sages), having first laughed at them, disregarded them, and shown them disrespect.
तेऽथ रोषसमाविष्टाः सुभृशं जातमन्यवः ।
आरेभिरे महत्कर्म तदा शक्रभयंकरम् ॥११॥
11. te'tha roṣasamāviṣṭāḥ subhṛśaṁ jātamanyavaḥ ,
ārebhire mahatkarma tadā śakrabhayaṁkaram.
11. te atha roṣasamāviṣṭāḥ subhṛśam jātamanvavaḥ
ārebhire mahat karma tadā śakrabhayaṅkaram
11. Then they, intensely filled with anger and greatly enraged, began a mighty ritual, terrifying to Indra, at that very moment.
जुहुवुस्ते सुतपसो विधिवज्जातवेदसम् ।
मन्त्रैरुच्चावचैर्विप्रा येन कामेन तच्छृणु ॥१२॥
12. juhuvuste sutapaso vidhivajjātavedasam ,
mantrairuccāvacairviprā yena kāmena tacchṛṇu.
12. juhuvuḥ te sutapasaḥ vidhivat jātavedasam
mantraiḥ uccāvacaiḥ viprāḥ yena kāmena tat śṛṇu
12. Those brahmins, possessing great austerities, offered sacrifices to Agni, the fire-god, according to the prescribed rites, with various mantras. Hear now for what purpose they did this.
कामवीर्यः कामगमो देवराजभयप्रदः ।
इन्द्रोऽन्यः सर्वदेवानां भवेदिति यतव्रताः ॥१३॥
13. kāmavīryaḥ kāmagamo devarājabhayapradaḥ ,
indro'nyaḥ sarvadevānāṁ bhavediti yatavratāḥ.
13. कामवीर्यः कामगमः देवराजभयप्रदः इन्द्रः
अन्यः सर्वदेवानाम् भवेत् इति यतव्रताः
13. The sages, whose vows were firm, desired: "Let there be another Indra, one whose prowess is as desired, who moves at will, and who causes fear to the king of gods among all deities."
इन्द्राच्छतगुणः शौर्ये वीर्ये चैव मनोजवः ।
तपसो नः फलेनाद्य दारुणः संभवत्विति ॥१४॥
14. indrācchataguṇaḥ śaurye vīrye caiva manojavaḥ ,
tapaso naḥ phalenādya dāruṇaḥ saṁbhavatviti.
14. इन्द्रात् शतगुणः शौर्ये वीर्ये च एव मनोजवः
तपसः नः फलेन अद्य दारुणः संभवतु इति
14. They continued to wish: "Let him be a hundred times superior to Indra in valor and strength, and swift as thought. And let him become formidable today through the fruit of our austerities."
तद्बुद्ध्वा भृशसंतप्तो देवराजः शतक्रतुः ।
जगाम शरणं तत्र कश्यपं संशितव्रतम् ॥१५॥
15. tadbuddhvā bhṛśasaṁtapto devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ ,
jagāma śaraṇaṁ tatra kaśyapaṁ saṁśitavratam.
15. तत् बुद्ध्वा भृशसंतप्तः देवराजः शतक्रतुः
जगाम शरणम् तत्र कश्यपम् संशितव्रतम्
15. Having understood that, the king of gods, Śatakratu, became greatly distressed. He then went there for refuge to Kaśyapa, who was firm in his vows.
तच्छ्रुत्वा देवराजस्य कश्यपोऽथ प्रजापतिः ।
वालखिल्यानुपागम्य कर्मसिद्धिमपृच्छत ॥१६॥
16. tacchrutvā devarājasya kaśyapo'tha prajāpatiḥ ,
vālakhilyānupāgamya karmasiddhimapṛcchata.
16. तत् श्रुत्वा देवराजस्य कश्यपः अथ प्रजापतिः
वालखिल्यान् उपागम्य कर्मसिद्धिम् अपृच्छत
16. Having heard that from the king of gods, Kaśyapa, the Prajāpati, then approached the Vālakhilyas and asked about the success of their ritual.
एवमस्त्विति तं चापि प्रत्यूचुः सत्यवादिनः ।
तान्कश्यप उवाचेदं सान्त्वपूर्वं प्रजापतिः ॥१७॥
17. evamastviti taṁ cāpi pratyūcuḥ satyavādinaḥ ,
tānkaśyapa uvācedaṁ sāntvapūrvaṁ prajāpatiḥ.
17. एवम् अस्तु इति तम् च अपि प्रत्यूचुः सत्यवादिनः
तान् कश्यपः उवाच इदम् सान्त्वपूर्वम् प्रजापतिः
17. The truth-telling Vālakhilyas replied to him, "So be it!" Then Kaśyapa, the Prajāpati, spoke this to them with soothing words.
अयमिन्द्रस्त्रिभुवने नियोगाद्ब्रह्मणः कृतः ।
इन्द्रार्थं च भवन्तोऽपि यत्नवन्तस्तपोधनाः ॥१८॥
18. ayamindrastribhuvane niyogādbrahmaṇaḥ kṛtaḥ ,
indrārthaṁ ca bhavanto'pi yatnavantastapodhanāḥ.
18. ayam indraḥ tribhuvane niyogāt brahmaṇaḥ kṛtaḥ
indrārtham ca bhavantaḥ api yatnavantaḥ tapodhanaḥ
18. This Indra was created in the three worlds by the command of Brahmā. And you, O ascetics, are also diligently striving for Indra's sake.
न मिथ्या ब्रह्मणो वाक्यं कर्तुमर्हथ सत्तमाः ।
भवतां च न मिथ्यायं संकल्पो मे चिकीर्षितः ॥१९॥
19. na mithyā brahmaṇo vākyaṁ kartumarhatha sattamāḥ ,
bhavatāṁ ca na mithyāyaṁ saṁkalpo me cikīrṣitaḥ.
19. na mithyā brahmaṇaḥ vākyam kartum arhatha sattamāḥ
bhavatām ca na mithyā ayam saṃkalpaḥ me cikīrṣitaḥ
19. O best among noble ones, you should not invalidate Brahmā's word. And this resolve of yours, which I wish to accomplish, shall also not be false.
भवत्वेष पतत्रीणामिन्द्रोऽतिबलसत्त्ववान् ।
प्रसादः क्रियतां चैव देवराजस्य याचतः ॥२०॥
20. bhavatveṣa patatrīṇāmindro'tibalasattvavān ,
prasādaḥ kriyatāṁ caiva devarājasya yācataḥ.
20. bhavatu eṣaḥ patatrīṇām indraḥ atibalasattvavān
prasādaḥ kriyatām ca eva devarājasya yācataḥ
20. Let this one be the Indra of the birds, endowed with immense strength and vitality. And indeed, let favor be granted to the king of gods, who is making this request.
एवमुक्ताः कश्यपेन वालखिल्यास्तपोधनाः ।
प्रत्यूचुरभिसंपूज्य मुनिश्रेष्ठं प्रजापतिम् ॥२१॥
21. evamuktāḥ kaśyapena vālakhilyāstapodhanāḥ ,
pratyūcurabhisaṁpūjya muniśreṣṭhaṁ prajāpatim.
21. evam uktāḥ kāśyapena vālakhilyāḥ tapodhanaḥ
pratyūcuḥ abhisaṃpūjya muniśreṣṭham prajāpatim
21. Thus addressed by Kaśyapa, the Vālakhilya ascetics replied, having greatly honored the best of sages, the lord of creatures.
इन्द्रार्थोऽयं समारम्भः सर्वेषां नः प्रजापते ।
अपत्यार्थं समारम्भो भवतश्चायमीप्सितः ॥२२॥
22. indrārtho'yaṁ samārambhaḥ sarveṣāṁ naḥ prajāpate ,
apatyārthaṁ samārambho bhavataścāyamīpsitaḥ.
22. indrārthaḥ ayam samārambhaḥ sarveṣām naḥ prajāpate
apatyārtham samārambhaḥ bhavataḥ ca ayam īpsitaḥ
22. O Prajāpati, this undertaking of all of us is for Indra's purpose. And this undertaking of yours is desired for progeny.
तदिदं सफलं कर्म त्वया वै प्रतिगृह्यताम् ।
तथा चैव विधत्स्वात्र यथा श्रेयोऽनुपश्यसि ॥२३॥
23. tadidaṁ saphalaṁ karma tvayā vai pratigṛhyatām ,
tathā caiva vidhatsvātra yathā śreyo'nupaśyasi.
23. tat idam saphalam karma tvayā vai pratigṛhyatām
tathā ca eva vidhatsva atra yathā śreyaḥ anupaśyasi
23. Therefore, let this successful action be accepted by you. And act here in whatever way you deem beneficial.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु देवी दाक्षायणी शुभा ।
विनता नाम कल्याणी पुत्रकामा यशस्विनी ॥२४॥
24. etasminneva kāle tu devī dākṣāyaṇī śubhā ,
vinatā nāma kalyāṇī putrakāmā yaśasvinī.
24. etasmin eva kāle tu devī dākṣāyaṇī śubhā
vinatā nāma kalyāṇī putrakāmā yaśasvinī
24. At this very time, the auspicious goddess Dākṣāyaṇī, named Vinatā, who was blessed, desirous of sons, and glorious...
तपस्तप्त्वा व्रतपरा स्नाता पुंसवने शुचिः ।
उपचक्राम भर्तारं तामुवाचाथ कश्यपः ॥२५॥
25. tapastaptvā vrataparā snātā puṁsavane śuciḥ ,
upacakrāma bhartāraṁ tāmuvācātha kaśyapaḥ.
25. tapaḥ taptvā vrataparā snātā puṃsavane śuciḥ
upacakrāma bhartāram tām uvāca atha kaśyapaḥ
25. Having performed austerities, devoted to her vows, and purified by bathing for the Pumsavana rite, she approached her husband. Then Kaśyapa spoke to her.
आरम्भः सफलो देवि भवितायं तवेप्सितः ।
जनयिष्यसि पुत्रौ द्वौ वीरौ त्रिभुवनेश्वरौ ॥२६॥
26. ārambhaḥ saphalo devi bhavitāyaṁ tavepsitaḥ ,
janayiṣyasi putrau dvau vīrau tribhuvaneśvarau.
26. ārambhaḥ saphalaḥ devi bhavitā ayam tava īpsitaḥ
janayiṣyasi putrau dvau vīrau tribhuvaneśvarau
26. O Goddess, this desired undertaking of yours will be successful. You will give birth to two heroic sons, lords of the three worlds.
तपसा वालखिल्यानां मम संकल्पजौ तथा ।
भविष्यतो महाभागौ पुत्रौ ते लोकपूजितौ ॥२७॥
27. tapasā vālakhilyānāṁ mama saṁkalpajau tathā ,
bhaviṣyato mahābhāgau putrau te lokapūjitau.
27. tapasā vālakhilyānām mama saṅkalpajau tathā
bhaviṣyataḥ mahābhāgau putrau te lokapūjitau
27. And, born from my resolve and through the penance of the Vālakhilyas, your two sons will be greatly fortunate and honored by the world.
उवाच चैनां भगवान्मारीचः पुनरेव ह ।
धार्यतामप्रमादेन गर्भोऽयं सुमहोदयः ॥२८॥
28. uvāca caināṁ bhagavānmārīcaḥ punareva ha ,
dhāryatāmapramādena garbho'yaṁ sumahodayaḥ.
28. uvāca ca enām bhagavān mārīcaḥ punaḥ eva ha
dhāryatām apramādena garbhaḥ ayam sumahodayaḥ
28. And Lord Marica spoke to her again: 'This highly auspicious embryo should be carefully borne.'
एकः सर्वपतत्रीणामिन्द्रत्वं कारयिष्यति ।
लोकसंभावितो वीरः कामवीर्यो विहंगमः ॥२९॥
29. ekaḥ sarvapatatrīṇāmindratvaṁ kārayiṣyati ,
lokasaṁbhāvito vīraḥ kāmavīryo vihaṁgamaḥ.
29. ekaḥ sarvapatatrīṇām indratvam kārayiṣyati
lokasaṃbhāvitaḥ vīraḥ kāmavīryaḥ vihaṅgamaḥ
29. One of them will attain sovereignty over all birds. He will be a hero, esteemed by the world, a bird whose power is manifest at will.
शतक्रतुमथोवाच प्रीयमाणः प्रजापतिः ।
त्वत्सहायौ खगावेतौ भ्रातरौ ते भविष्यतः ॥३०॥
30. śatakratumathovāca prīyamāṇaḥ prajāpatiḥ ,
tvatsahāyau khagāvetau bhrātarau te bhaviṣyataḥ.
30. śatakratum atha uvāca prīyamāṇaḥ prajāpatiḥ
tvatsahāyau khagau etau bhrātarau te bhaviṣyataḥ
30. Then, Prajāpati, being pleased, spoke to Śatakratu: 'These two birds will be your helpers, your brothers.'
नैताभ्यां भविता दोषः सकाशात्ते पुरंदर ।
व्येतु ते शक्र संतापस्त्वमेवेन्द्रो भविष्यसि ॥३१॥
31. naitābhyāṁ bhavitā doṣaḥ sakāśātte puraṁdara ,
vyetu te śakra saṁtāpastvamevendro bhaviṣyasi.
31. na etābhyām bhavitā doṣaḥ sakāśāt te purandara
vyetu te śakra saṃtāpaḥ tvam eva indraḥ bhaviṣyasi
31. No fault will come from these two to you, O Purandara. Let your distress vanish, O Śakra; you will indeed be Indra.
न चाप्येवं त्वया भूयः क्षेप्तव्या ब्रह्मवादिनः ।
न चावमान्या दर्पात्ते वाग्विषा भृशकोपनाः ॥३२॥
32. na cāpyevaṁ tvayā bhūyaḥ kṣeptavyā brahmavādinaḥ ,
na cāvamānyā darpātte vāgviṣā bhṛśakopanāḥ.
32. na ca api evam tvayā bhūyaḥ kṣeptavyāḥ brahmavādinaḥ
na ca avamānyāḥ darpāt te vāgviṣāḥ bhṛśakopanāḥ
32. And thus, the brahmins who expound the Brahman should not again be offended by you. Nor should those whose speech is venomous and who are exceedingly wrathful be slighted by you out of pride.
एवमुक्तो जगामेन्द्रो निर्विशङ्कस्त्रिविष्टपम् ।
विनता चापि सिद्धार्था बभूव मुदिता तदा ॥३३॥
33. evamukto jagāmendro nirviśaṅkastriviṣṭapam ,
vinatā cāpi siddhārthā babhūva muditā tadā.
33. evam uktaḥ jagāma indraḥ nirviśaṅkaḥ triviṣṭapam
vinatā ca api siddhārthā babhūva muditā tadā
33. Thus spoken to, Indra, without any fear, went to heaven. And Vinatā, whose purpose was accomplished, became joyous then.
जनयामास पुत्रौ द्वावरुणं गरुडं तथा ।
अरुणस्तयोस्तु विकल आदित्यस्य पुरःसरः ॥३४॥
34. janayāmāsa putrau dvāvaruṇaṁ garuḍaṁ tathā ,
aruṇastayostu vikala ādityasya puraḥsaraḥ.
34. janayāmāsa putrau dvau aruṇam garuḍam tathā
aruṇaḥ tayoḥ tu vikalaḥ ādityasya purasaraḥ
34. She gave birth to two sons: Aruna and Garuḍa. Of these two, Aruna, being crippled, became the charioteer of the Sun-god.
पतत्रीणां तु गरुड इन्द्रत्वेनाभ्यषिच्यत ।
तस्यैतत्कर्म सुमहच्छ्रूयतां भृगुनन्दन ॥३५॥
35. patatrīṇāṁ tu garuḍa indratvenābhyaṣicyata ,
tasyaitatkarma sumahacchrūyatāṁ bhṛgunandana.
35. patatrīṇām tu garuḍaḥ indratvena abhyaṣicyata
tasya etat karma sumahat śrūyatām bhṛgunandana
35. But Garuḍa was consecrated to the kingship of birds. O son of Bhrigu, listen to this very great deed of his.
