जरितारिरुवाच ।
पुरतः कृच्छ्रकालस्य धीमाञ्जागर्ति पूरुषः ।
स कृच्छ्रकालं संप्राप्य व्यथां नैवैति कर्हिचित् ॥१॥
1. jaritāriruvāca ,
purataḥ kṛcchrakālasya dhīmāñjāgarti pūruṣaḥ ,
sa kṛcchrakālaṁ saṁprāpya vyathāṁ naivaiti karhicit.
1. jaritāriḥ uvāca purataḥ kṛcchrakālasya dhīmān jāgarti pūruṣaḥ
saḥ kṛcchrakālam saṃprāpya vyathām na eva eti karhicit
1. Jaritari said: "A wise person (puruṣa) remains alert before a time of difficulty. Having then encountered that difficult time, he certainly never experiences distress (vyathā)."
यस्तु कृच्छ्रमसंप्राप्तं विचेता नावबुध्यते ।
स कृच्छ्रकाले व्यथितो न प्रजानाति किंचन ॥२॥
2. yastu kṛcchramasaṁprāptaṁ vicetā nāvabudhyate ,
sa kṛcchrakāle vyathito na prajānāti kiṁcana.
2. yaḥ tu kṛcchram asaṃprāptam vicetā na avabudhyate
saḥ kṛcchrakāle vyathitaḥ na prajānāti kiṃcana
2. However, a senseless (vicetā) person who does not discern a difficulty before it arrives, becomes distressed in that time of difficulty and understands nothing at all.
सारिसृक्व उवाच ।
धीरस्त्वमसि मेधावी प्राणकृच्छ्रमिदं च नः ।
शूरः प्राज्ञो बहूनां हि भवत्येको न संशयः ॥३॥
3. sārisṛkva uvāca ,
dhīrastvamasi medhāvī prāṇakṛcchramidaṁ ca naḥ ,
śūraḥ prājño bahūnāṁ hi bhavatyeko na saṁśayaḥ.
3. sārisṛkvaḥ uvāca dhīraḥ tvam asi medhāvī prāṇakṛcchram idam
ca naḥ śūraḥ prājñaḥ bahūnām hi bhavati ekaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
3. Sarisṛkva said: "You are indeed steadfast and intelligent, and this is a peril to our lives. Truly, among many, only one proves to be brave and discerning; there is no doubt."
स्तम्बमित्र उवाच ।
ज्येष्ठस्त्राता भवति वै ज्येष्ठो मुञ्चति कृच्छ्रतः ।
ज्येष्ठश्चेन्न प्रजानाति कनीयान्किं करिष्यति ॥४॥
4. stambamitra uvāca ,
jyeṣṭhastrātā bhavati vai jyeṣṭho muñcati kṛcchrataḥ ,
jyeṣṭhaścenna prajānāti kanīyānkiṁ kariṣyati.
4. stambamitra uvāca jyeṣṭhaḥ trātā bhavati vai jyeṣṭhaḥ muñcati
kṛcchrataḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ cet na prajānāti kanīyān kim kariṣyati
4. Stambamitra said: "The eldest is indeed the protector; the eldest saves from difficulty. If the eldest does not know what to do, what will the younger one do?"
द्रोण उवाच ।
हिरण्यरेतास्त्वरितो ज्वलन्नायाति नः क्षयम् ।
सप्तजिह्वोऽनलः क्षामो लेलिहानोपसर्पति ॥५॥
5. droṇa uvāca ,
hiraṇyaretāstvarito jvalannāyāti naḥ kṣayam ,
saptajihvo'nalaḥ kṣāmo lelihānopasarpati.
5. droṇa uvāca hiraṇyaretāḥ tvaritaḥ jvalan āyāti naḥ
kṣayam saptajihvaḥ analaḥ kṣāmaḥ lelihānaḥ upasarati
5. Drona said: "Agni (the gold-seeded one), blazing and swift, comes towards our destruction. The seven-tongued fire, consuming and licking, approaches."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तो भ्रातृभिस्तु जरितारिर्विभावसुम् ।
तुष्टाव प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा यथा तच्छृणु पार्थिव ॥६॥
6. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamukto bhrātṛbhistu jaritārirvibhāvasum ,
tuṣṭāva prāñjalirbhūtvā yathā tacchṛṇu pārthiva.
6. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam uktaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ tu jaritāriḥ
vibhāvasum tuṣṭāva prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā yathā tat śṛṇu pārthiva
6. Vaiśampāyana said: "Thus addressed by her brothers, Jaritari, having folded her hands, praised Vibhāvasu (Agni). O king, hear how she did that."
जरितारिरुवाच ।
आत्मासि वायोः पवनः शरीरमुत वीरुधाम् ।
योनिरापश्च ते शुक्र योनिस्त्वमसि चाम्भसः ॥७॥
7. jaritāriruvāca ,
ātmāsi vāyoḥ pavanaḥ śarīramuta vīrudhām ,
yonirāpaśca te śukra yonistvamasi cāmbhasaḥ.
7. jaritāriḥ uvāca ātmā asi vāyoḥ pavanaḥ śarīram uta
vīrudhām yoniḥ āpaḥ ca te śukra yoniḥ tvam asi ca ambhasaḥ
7. Jaritari said: "You are the very self (ātman) of the wind, the purifying breath, and the body of plants. O brilliant one, you are the source of waters, and you yourself are also the origin of all moisture."
ऊर्ध्वं चाधश्च गच्छन्ति विसर्पन्ति च पार्श्वतः ।
अर्चिषस्ते महावीर्य रश्मयः सवितुर्यथा ॥८॥
8. ūrdhvaṁ cādhaśca gacchanti visarpanti ca pārśvataḥ ,
arciṣaste mahāvīrya raśmayaḥ savituryathā.
8. ūrdhvam ca adhaḥ ca gacchanti visarpanti ca
pārśvataḥ arciṣaḥ te mahāvīrya raśmayaḥ savituḥ yathā
8. O greatly valorous one, just as the sun's rays go upwards, downwards, and spread out sideways, so too do your flames.
सारिसृक्व उवाच ।
माता प्रपन्ना पितरं न विद्मः पक्षाश्च नो न प्रजाताब्जकेतो ।
न नस्त्राता विद्यतेऽग्ने त्वदन्यस्तस्माद्धि नः परिरक्षैकवीर ॥९॥
9. sārisṛkva uvāca ,
mātā prapannā pitaraṁ na vidmaḥ; pakṣāśca no na prajātābjaketo ,
na nastrātā vidyate'gne tvadanya;stasmāddhi naḥ parirakṣaikavīra.
9. sārisṛkvaḥ uvāca mātā prapannā pitaraṃ
na vidmaḥ pakṣāḥ ca naḥ na prajātāḥ
abjaketo na naḥ trātā vidyate agne tvat
anyaḥ tasmāt hi naḥ parirakṣa eka-vīra
9. Sārisṛkva said: 'Our mother has passed away, and we do not know our father. Our wings have not yet grown, O lotus-bannered one! O Agni, there is no other protector for us than you. Therefore, indeed, protect us, O sole hero!'
यदग्ने ते शिवं रूपं ये च ते सप्त हेतयः ।
तेन नः परिरक्षाद्य ईडितः शरणैषिणः ॥१०॥
10. yadagne te śivaṁ rūpaṁ ye ca te sapta hetayaḥ ,
tena naḥ parirakṣādya īḍitaḥ śaraṇaiṣiṇaḥ.
10. yat agne te śivam rūpam ye ca te sapta hetayaḥ
tena naḥ parirakṣa adya īḍitaḥ śaraṇaiṣiṇaḥ
10. O Agni, whatever auspicious form you have, and those seven weapons of yours — by that, O praised one, protect us today, we who seek refuge!
त्वमेवैकस्तपसे जातवेदो नान्यस्तप्ता विद्यते गोषु देव ।
ऋषीनस्मान्बालकान्पालयस्व परेणास्मान्प्रैहि वै हव्यवाह ॥११॥
11. tvamevaikastapase jātavedo; nānyastaptā vidyate goṣu deva ,
ṛṣīnasmānbālakānpālayasva; pareṇāsmānpraihi vai havyavāha.
11. tvam eva ekaḥ tapase jātavedaḥ
na anyaḥ taptā vidyate goṣu deva
ṛṣīn asmān bālakān pālayasva
pareṇa asmān praihi vai havyavāha
11. O Jātavedas, you alone are the burner; no other burner exists in the world, O god. Protect us, these sages and children. Indeed, send us to safety, O carrier of oblations!
स्तम्बमित्र उवाच ।
सर्वमग्ने त्वमेवैकस्त्वयि सर्वमिदं जगत् ।
त्वं धारयसि भूतानि भुवनं त्वं बिभर्षि च ॥१२॥
12. stambamitra uvāca ,
sarvamagne tvamevaikastvayi sarvamidaṁ jagat ,
tvaṁ dhārayasi bhūtāni bhuvanaṁ tvaṁ bibharṣi ca.
12. stambamitraḥ uvāca sarvam agne tvam eva ekaḥ tvayi sarvam
idam jagat tvam dhārayasi bhūtāni bhuvanam tvam bibharṣi ca
12. Stambamitra said: "O Agni, you alone are everything; in you rests this entire universe. You sustain all beings and also support the world."
त्वमग्निर्हव्यवाहस्त्वं त्वमेव परमं हविः ।
मनीषिणस्त्वां यजन्ते बहुधा चैकधैव च ॥१३॥
13. tvamagnirhavyavāhastvaṁ tvameva paramaṁ haviḥ ,
manīṣiṇastvāṁ yajante bahudhā caikadhaiva ca.
13. tvam agniḥ havyavāhaḥ tvam tvam eva paramam haviḥ
manīṣiṇaḥ tvām yajante bahudhā ca ekadhā eva ca
13. "You are Agni, the carrier of oblations (havyavāha), and you yourself are the supreme oblation. The wise worship you in many ways and also in a singular way."
सृष्ट्वा लोकांस्त्रीनिमान्हव्यवाह प्राप्ते काले पचसि पुनः समिद्धः ।
सर्वस्यास्य भुवनस्य प्रसूतिस्त्वमेवाग्ने भवसि पुनः प्रतिष्ठा ॥१४॥
14. sṛṣṭvā lokāṁstrīnimānhavyavāha; prāpte kāle pacasi punaḥ samiddhaḥ ,
sarvasyāsya bhuvanasya prasūti;stvamevāgne bhavasi punaḥ pratiṣṭhā.
14. sṛṣṭvā lokān trīn imān havyavāha
prāpte kāle pacasi punaḥ samiddhaḥ
sarvasya asya bhuvanasya prasūtiḥ
tvam eva agne bhavasi punaḥ pratiṣṭhā
14. O carrier of oblations (havyavāha), having created these three worlds, you again consume them when the appointed time arrives, fully kindled. O Agni, you alone are the origin of this entire world, and you again become its foundation.
त्वमन्नं प्राणिनां भुक्तमन्तर्भूतो जगत्पते ।
नित्यं प्रवृद्धः पचसि त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥१५॥
15. tvamannaṁ prāṇināṁ bhuktamantarbhūto jagatpate ,
nityaṁ pravṛddhaḥ pacasi tvayi sarvaṁ pratiṣṭhitam.
15. tvam annam prāṇinām bhuktam antaḥbhūtaḥ jagatpate
nityam pravṛddhaḥ pacasi tvayi sarvam pratiṣṭhitam
15. O Lord of the world (jagatpati), you are the food consumed by living beings, residing within them. Constantly increasing, you digest. In you, everything is established.
द्रोण उवाच ।
सूर्यो भूत्वा रश्मिभिर्जातवेदो भूमेरम्भो भूमिजातान्रसांश्च ।
विश्वानादाय पुनरुत्सर्गकाले सृष्ट्वा वृष्ट्या भावयसीह शुक्र ॥१६॥
16. droṇa uvāca ,
sūryo bhūtvā raśmibhirjātavedo; bhūmerambho bhūmijātānrasāṁśca ,
viśvānādāya punarutsargakāle; sṛṣṭvā vṛṣṭyā bhāvayasīha śukra.
16. droṇa uvāca | sūryaḥ bhūtvā raśmibhiḥ
jātavedaḥ bhūmeḥ ambhaḥ bhūmijātān
rasān ca | viśvān ādāya punar utsarga-kāle
sṛṣṭvā vṛṣṭyā bhāvayasi iha śukra
16. Droṇa said: O Shukra, you, who embody the all-knowing power (jātavedas), assume the form of the sun and draw up with your rays the water from the earth and the essences of all things born from the earth. Then, at the time of re-emission, you create and sustain them here with rain.
त्वत्त एताः पुनः शुक्र वीरुधो हरितच्छदाः ।
जायन्ते पुष्करिण्यश्च समुद्रश्च महोदधिः ॥१७॥
17. tvatta etāḥ punaḥ śukra vīrudho haritacchadāḥ ,
jāyante puṣkariṇyaśca samudraśca mahodadhiḥ.
17. tvattaḥ etāḥ punar śukra vīrudhaḥ haritacchadāḥ
| jāyante puṣkariṇyaḥ ca samudraḥ ca mahodadhiḥ
17. O Shukra, from you these green-leaved plants, lotus ponds, and the great ocean are born again.
इदं वै सद्म तिग्मांशो वरुणस्य परायणम् ।
शिवस्त्राता भवास्माकं मास्मानद्य विनाशय ॥१८॥
18. idaṁ vai sadma tigmāṁśo varuṇasya parāyaṇam ,
śivastrātā bhavāsmākaṁ māsmānadya vināśaya.
18. idam vai sadma tigmāṃśo varuṇasya parāyaṇam |
śivaḥ trātā bhava asmākam mā asmān adya vināśaya
18. O sharp-rayed one (tigmāṃśu), this indeed is the abode and ultimate refuge of Varuṇa. Be our benevolent protector; do not destroy us today.
पिङ्गाक्ष लोहितग्रीव कृष्णवर्त्मन्हुताशन ।
परेण प्रैहि मुञ्चास्मान्सागरस्य गृहानिव ॥१९॥
19. piṅgākṣa lohitagrīva kṛṣṇavartmanhutāśana ,
pareṇa praihi muñcāsmānsāgarasya gṛhāniva.
19. piṅgākṣa lohitagrīva kṛṣṇavartman hutāśana |
pareṇa pra ihi muñca asmān sāgarasya gṛhān iva
19. O tawny-eyed one, O red-necked one, O black-pathed fire (kṛṣṇavartman), O consumer of oblations (hutāśana)! Depart by another path; release us as one would release [beings] from the ocean's dwellings.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तो जातवेदा द्रोणेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।
द्रोणमाह प्रतीतात्मा मन्दपालप्रतिज्ञया ॥२०॥
20. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamukto jātavedā droṇenākliṣṭakarmaṇā ,
droṇamāha pratītātmā mandapālapratijñayā.
20. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evaṃ uktaḥ jātavedāḥ droṇena
akliṣṭakarmaṇā droṇam āha pratītātmā mandapālapratijñayā
20. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus addressed by Droṇa, whose actions were never impaired, Agni (jātavedas), with a satisfied self (ātman), spoke to Droṇa, recalling Mandapāla's promise.
ऋषिर्द्रोणस्त्वमसि वै ब्रह्मैतद्व्याहृतं त्वया ।
ईप्सितं ते करिष्यामि न च ते विद्यते भयम् ॥२१॥
21. ṛṣirdroṇastvamasi vai brahmaitadvyāhṛtaṁ tvayā ,
īpsitaṁ te kariṣyāmi na ca te vidyate bhayam.
21. ṛṣiḥ droṇaḥ tvam asi vai brahma etat vyāhṛtam
tvayā īpsitam te kariṣyāmi na ca te vidyate bhayam
21. You are indeed the sage Droṇa, and this sacred utterance (brahman) has been made by you. I will certainly fulfill your desire, and you have no reason to fear.
मन्दपालेन यूयं हि मम पूर्वं निवेदिताः ।
वर्जयेः पुत्रकान्मह्यं दहन्दावमिति स्म ह ॥२२॥
22. mandapālena yūyaṁ hi mama pūrvaṁ niveditāḥ ,
varjayeḥ putrakānmahyaṁ dahandāvamiti sma ha.
22. mandapālena yūyam hi mama pūrvaṃ niveditāḥ
varjayeḥ putrakān mahyam dahan dāvam iti sma ha
22. Agni said: "Indeed, Mandapāla had previously entrusted [his sons] to me, (saying,) 'When you burn the forest fire, please spare my children (putrakān),' thus it was said."
यच्च तद्वचनं तस्य त्वया यच्चेह भाषितम् ।
उभयं मे गरीयस्तद्ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ।
भृशं प्रीतोऽस्मि भद्रं ते ब्रह्मन्स्तोत्रेण ते विभो ॥२३॥
23. yacca tadvacanaṁ tasya tvayā yacceha bhāṣitam ,
ubhayaṁ me garīyastadbrūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te ,
bhṛśaṁ prīto'smi bhadraṁ te brahmanstotreṇa te vibho.
23. yat ca tat vacanam tasya tvayā yat ca
iha bhāṣitam ubhayam me garīyaḥ tat
brūhi kim karavāṇi te bhṛśam prītaḥ
asmi bhadram te brahman stotreṇa te vibho
23. And that word of his (Mandapāla's), along with what you (Droṇa) have spoken here, both are of great importance to me. Tell me, what can I do for you? I am exceedingly pleased, and may good fortune be yours, O Brahmin (brahman), because of your praise, O Lord (vibhu)!
द्रोण उवाच ।
इमे मार्जारकाः शुक्र नित्यमुद्वेजयन्ति नः ।
एतान्कुरुष्व दंष्ट्रासु हव्यवाह सबान्धवान् ॥२४॥
24. droṇa uvāca ,
ime mārjārakāḥ śukra nityamudvejayanti naḥ ,
etānkuruṣva daṁṣṭrāsu havyavāha sabāndhavān.
24. Droṇaḥ uvāca | ime mārjārakāḥ śukra nityam udvejayanti
naḥ | etān kuruṣva daṃṣṭrāsu havyavāha sabāndhavān
24. Droṇa said, "O Śukra, these small cats constantly harass us. O Agni (havyavāha), consume them and their kin within your fangs."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा तत्कृतवान्वह्निरभ्यनुज्ञाय शार्ङ्गकान् ।
ददाह खाण्डवं चैव समिद्धो जनमेजय ॥२५॥
25. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathā tatkṛtavānvahnirabhyanujñāya śārṅgakān ,
dadāha khāṇḍavaṁ caiva samiddho janamejaya.
25. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca | tathā tat kṛtavān vahniḥ abhyanuñjāya
śārṅgakān | dadāha khāṇḍavam ca eva samiddhaḥ janamejaya
25. Vaiśaṃpāyana said, "Thus, O Janamejaya, Agni (vahni), having been granted permission regarding the Śārṅgakas, did that, and being ablaze, he burned the Khāṇḍava forest."
