कृतबुद्धिं निवासाय तथैव स मुनिस्तदा ।
भरतं कैकयी पुत्रमातिथ्येन न्यमन्त्रयत् ॥१॥
1. kṛtabuddhiṃ nivāsāya tathaiva sa munistadā ,

1. Then, that sage, having resolved to provide accommodation, accordingly invited Bharata, Kaikeyi's son, with hospitality.
अब्रवीद्भरतस्त्वेनं नन्विदं भवता कृतम् ।
पाद्यमर्घ्यं तथातिथ्यं वने यदूपपद्यते ॥२॥
2. abravīdbharatastvenaṃ nanvidaṃ bhavatā kṛtam ,
pādyamarghyaṃ tathātithyaṃ vane yadūpapadyate.
2. abravīt bharataḥ tu enam nanu idam bhavatā kṛtam
pādyam arghyam tathā ātithyam vane yat upapadyate

2. Bharata then said to him, 'Surely, you have already offered this, which is appropriate in the forest: foot-water, a respectful offering, and hospitality.'
अथोवाच भरद्वाजो भरतं प्रहसन्निव ।
जाने त्वां प्रीति संयुक्तं तुष्येस्त्वं येन केन चित् ॥३॥
3. athovāca bharadvājo bharataṃ prahasanniva ,
jāne tvāṃ prīti saṃyuktaṃ tuṣyestvaṃ yena kena cit.
3. atha uvāca bharadvājaḥ bharatam prahasan iva jāne
tvām prīti saṃyuktam tuṣyesi tvam yena kena cit

3. Then Bharadvaja said to Bharata, as if smiling, 'I know you are full of affection, and you would be satisfied with anything.'
सेनायास्तु तवैतस्याः कर्तुमिच्छामि भोजनम् ।
मम प्रितिर्यथा रूपा त्वमर्हो मनुजर्षभ ॥४॥
4. senāyāstu tavaitasyāḥ kartumicchāmi bhojanam ,
mama pritiryathā rūpā tvamarho manujarṣabha.
4. senāyāḥ tu tava etasyāḥ kartum icchāmi bhojanam
mama prītiḥ yathā rūpā tvam arhaḥ manujarṣabha
4. tu icchāmi tava etasyāḥ senāyāḥ bhojanam kartum

4. However, I wish to arrange a feast for this army of yours. You, O best of men, are worthy of my affection in its full measure.
किमर्थं चापि निक्षिप्य दूरे बलमिहागतः ।
कस्मान्नेहोपयातो ऽसि सबलः पुरुषर्षभ ॥५॥
5. kimarthaṃ cāpi nikṣipya dūre balamihāgataḥ ,
kasmānnehopayāto'si sabalaḥ puruṣarṣabha.
5. kimartham ca api nikṣipya dūre balam iha āgataḥ
kasmāt na iha upāyātaḥ asi sabalaḥ puruṣarṣabha
5. puruṣarṣabha,
kimartham ca api balam dūre nikṣipya iha āgataḥ? kasmāt sabalaḥ iha na upāyātaḥ asi?
5. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), why have you come here after leaving your army far away? And why have you not arrived here with your forces?
भरतः प्रत्युवाचेदं प्राञ्जलिस्तं तपोधनम् ।
ससैन्यो नोपयातो ऽस्मि भगवन्भगवद्भयात् ॥६॥
6. bharataḥ pratyuvācedaṃ prāñjalistaṃ tapodhanam ,
sasainyo nopayāto'smi bhagavanbhagavadbhayāt.
6. bharataḥ prati uvāca idam prāñjaliḥ tam tapodhanam
sasainyaḥ na upāyātaḥ asmi bhagavan bhagavat bhayāt
6. bharataḥ prāñjaliḥ tam tapodhanam idam prati uvāca.
bhagavan,
bhagavat bhayāt sasainyaḥ na upāyātaḥ asmi.
6. Bharata, with folded hands, replied this to that ascetic (tapas): 'O venerable one (bhagavat), I have not arrived with my army due to fear of you, the venerable one (bhagavat).'
वाजि मुख्या मनुष्याश्च मत्ताश्च वर वारणाः ।
प्रच्छाद्य महतीं भूमिं भगवन्ननुयान्ति माम् ॥७॥
7. vāji mukhyā manuṣyāśca mattāśca vara vāraṇāḥ ,
pracchādya mahatīṃ bhūmiṃ bhagavannanuyānti mām.
7. vāji mukhyāḥ manuṣyāḥ ca mattāḥ ca vara vāraṇāḥ
pracchādya mahatīm bhūmim bhagavan anuyānti mām
7. bhagavan,
vāji mukhyāḥ ca manuṣyāḥ ca mattāḥ ca vara vāraṇāḥ (te) mahatīm bhūmim pracchādya mām anuyānti.
7. O venerable one (bhagavat), the foremost horses and men, and excellent, rutting elephants follow me, covering a great portion of the earth.
ते वृक्षानुदकं भूमिमाश्रमेषूटजांस्तथा ।
न हिंस्युरिति तेनाहमेक एवागतस्ततः ॥८॥
8. te vṛkṣānudakaṃ bhūmimāśrameṣūṭajāṃstathā ,
na hiṃsyuriti tenāhameka evāgatastataḥ.
8. te vṛkṣān udakam bhūmim āśrameṣu uṭajān tathā
na hiṃsyuḥ iti tena aham ekaḥ eva āgataḥ tataḥ
8. te vṛkṣān udakam bhūmim tathā āśrameṣu uṭajān na hiṃsyuḥ iti,
tena tataḥ ekaḥ eva aham āgataḥ.
8. So that they (my army) might not harm the trees, water, land, and also the huts (uṭaja) within the hermitages (āśrama), for that reason I have come here alone.
आनीयतामितः सेनेत्याज्ञप्तः परमर्षिणा ।
तथा तु चक्रे भरतः सेनायाः समुपागमम् ॥९॥
9. ānīyatāmitaḥ senetyājñaptaḥ paramarṣiṇā ,
tathā tu cakre bharataḥ senāyāḥ samupāgamam.
9. ānīyatām itaḥ senā iti ājñaptaḥ paramarṣiṇā
| tathā tu cakre bharataḥ senāyāḥ samupāgamam
9. paramarṣiṇā itaḥ senā ānīyatām iti ājñaptaḥ

9. Thus commanded by the great sage, 'Let the army be brought from here,' Bharata accordingly arranged for the arrival of the army.
अग्निशालां प्रविश्याथ पीत्वापः परिमृज्य च ।
आतिथ्यस्य क्रियाहेतोर्विश्वकर्माणमाह्वयत् ॥१०॥
10. agniśālāṃ praviśyātha pītvāpaḥ parimṛjya ca ,
ātithyasya kriyāhetorviśvakarmāṇamāhvayat.
10. agniśālām praviśya atha pītvā apaḥ parimṛjya ca
| ātithyasya kriyāhetoḥ viśvakarmāṇam āhvayat
10. atha agniśālām praviśya ca apaḥ pītvā parimṛjya

10. Then, having entered the fire-hall, and having drunk water and purified himself, he invoked Viśvakarman for the purpose of extending hospitality.
आह्वये विश्वकर्माणमहं त्वष्टारमेव च ।
आतिथ्यं कर्तुमिच्छामि तत्र मे संविधीयताम् ॥११॥
11. āhvaye viśvakarmāṇamahaṃ tvaṣṭārameva ca ,
ātithyaṃ kartumicchāmi tatra me saṃvidhīyatām.
11. āhvaye viśvakarmāṇam aham tvaṣṭāram eva ca |
ātithyam kartum icchāmi tatra me saṃvidhīyatām
11. aham viśvakarmāṇam ca eva tvaṣṭāram āhvaye
ātithyam kartum icchāmi tatra me saṃvidhīyatām
11. I invoke Viśvakarman, and indeed Tvaṣṭar as well. I wish to perform hospitality; therefore, let arrangements be made for me there.
प्राक् स्रोतसश्च या नद्यः प्रत्यक् स्रोतस एव च ।
पृथिव्यामन्तरिक्षे च समायान्त्वद्य सर्वशः ॥१२॥
12. prāk srotasaśca yā nadyaḥ pratyak srotasa eva ca ,
pṛthivyāmantarikṣe ca samāyāntvadya sarvaśaḥ.
12. prāk srotasaḥ ca yāḥ nadyaḥ pratyak srotasaḥ eva ca
| pṛthivyām antarikṣe ca samāyāntu adya sarvaśaḥ
12. ca yāḥ prāk srotasaḥ nadyaḥ ca eva pratyak srotasaḥ
pṛthivyām ca antarikṣe adya sarvaśaḥ samāyāntu
12. And may all those rivers, both those with eastward currents and those with westward currents, on earth and in the atmosphere, come here today from all sides.
अन्याः स्रवन्तु मैरेयं सुरामन्याः सुनिष्ठिताम् ।
अपराश्चोदकं शीतमिक्षुकाण्डरसोपमम् ॥१३॥
13. anyāḥ sravantu maireyaṃ surāmanyāḥ suniṣṭhitām ,
aparāścodakaṃ śītamikṣukāṇḍarasopamam.
13. anyāḥ sravantu maireyam surām anyāḥ suniṣṭhitām
aparāḥ ca udakam śītam ikṣukāṇḍarasopamam
13. anyāḥ maireyam sravantu anyāḥ surām suniṣṭhitām
ca aparāḥ śītam udakam ikṣukāṇḍarasopamam
13. Let some [rivers] flow with Maireya liquor, others with well-prepared wine, and still others with cold water resembling sugarcane juice.
आह्वये देवगन्धर्वान् विश्वावसुहहाहुहून् ।
तथैवाप्सरसो देवीर्गन्धर्वीश्चापि सर्वशः ॥१४॥
14. āhvaye devagandharvān viśvāvasuhahāhuhūn ,
tathaivāpsaraso devīrgandharvīścāpi sarvaśaḥ.
14. āhvaye devagandharvān viśvāvasuhahāhuhūn tathā
eva apsarasaḥ devīḥ gandharvīḥ ca api sarvaśaḥ
14. āhvaye devagandharvān viśvāvasuhahāhuhūn tathā
eva devīḥ apsarasaḥ ca gandharvīḥ api sarvaśaḥ
14. I invoke the celestial Gandharvas - Viśvāvasu, Hāhā, and Huhū - and similarly, all the divine Apsarases and female Gandharvas.
घृताचीमथ विश्वाचीं मिश्रकेशीमलम्बुसाम् ।
शक्रं याश्चोपतिष्ठन्ति ब्रह्माणं याश्च भामिनीः ।
सर्वास्तुम्बुरुणा सार्धमाह्वये सपरिच्छदाः ॥१५॥
15. ghṛtācīmatha viśvācīṃ miśrakeśīmalambusām ,
śakraṃ yāścopatiṣṭhanti brahmāṇaṃ yāśca bhāminīḥ ,
sarvāstumburuṇā sārdhamāhvaye saparicchadāḥ.
15. ghṛtācīm atha viśvācīm miśrakeśīm
alambusām śakram yāḥ ca upatiṣṭhanti
brahmāṇam yāḥ ca bhāminīḥ sarvāḥ
tumburuṇā sārdham āhvaye saparicchadāḥ

miśrakeśīm alambusām ca yāḥ bhāminīḥ
śakram ca brahmāṇam upatiṣṭhanti
sarvāḥ tumburuṇā sārdham saparicchadāḥ
15. I invoke Ghṛtācī, Viśvācī, Miśrakeśī, Alambuṣā, and those other beautiful Apsarases who attend upon Indra and Brahmā; I invoke all of them along with their retinues, accompanied by Tumburu.
वनं कुरुषु यद्दिव्यं वासो भूषणपत्रवत् ।
दिव्यनारीफलं शश्वत्तत् कौबेरमिहैव तु ॥१६॥
16. vanaṃ kuruṣu yaddivyaṃ vāso bhūṣaṇapatravat ,
divyanārīphalaṃ śaśvattat kauberamihaiva tu.
16. vanam kuruṣu yat divyam vāsaḥ bhūṣaṇapatravat
divyanārīphalam śaśvat tat kauberam iha eva tu
16. yat divyam vanam kuruṣu vāsaḥ bhūṣaṇapatravat
divyanārīphalam śaśvat tat kauberam iha eva tu
16. The divine forest in the Kuru country, which always yields clothing, leafy ornaments, and fruits in the form of divine women – that very forest, belonging to Kubera, is indeed here.
इह मे भगवान् सोमो विधत्तामन्नमुत्तमम् ।
भक्ष्यं भोज्यं च चोष्यं च लेह्यं च विविधं बहु ॥१७॥
17. iha me bhagavān somo vidhattāmannamuttamam ,
bhakṣyaṃ bhojyaṃ ca coṣyaṃ ca lehyaṃ ca vividhaṃ bahu.
17. iha me bhagavān somaḥ vidhattām annam uttamam
bhakṣyam bhojyam ca coṣyam ca lehyam ca vividham bahu
17. iha bhagavān somaḥ me annam uttamam bhakṣyam bhojyam
ca coṣyam ca lehyam ca vividham bahu vidhattām
17. Here, may the revered Soma grant me excellent food: various and abundant provisions that are chewed, eaten, sucked, and licked.
विचित्राणि च माल्यानि पादपप्रच्युतानि च ।
सुरादीनि च पेयानि मांसानि विविधानि च ॥१८॥
18. vicitrāṇi ca mālyāni pādapapracyutāni ca ,
surādīni ca peyāni māṃsāni vividhāni ca.

surādīni ca peyāni māṃsāni vividhāni ca

18. And various garlands fallen from trees, and drinks like liquor, and diverse kinds of meats.
एवं समाधिना युक्तस्तेजसाप्रतिमेन च ।
शिक्षास्वरसमायुक्तं तपसा चाब्रवीन्मुनिः ॥१९॥
19. evaṃ samādhinā yuktastejasāpratimena ca ,
śikṣāsvarasamāyuktaṃ tapasā cābravīnmuniḥ.
19. evam samādhinā yuktaḥ tejasā apratimena ca
śikṣāsvarasamāyuktam tapasā ca abravīt muniḥ
19. evam muniḥ samādhinā apratimena tejasā ca
yuktaḥ śikṣāsvarasamāyuktam tapasā ca abravīt
19. Thus, the sage (muni), endowed with deep contemplation (samādhi) and incomparable radiance, spoke with asceticism (tapas) combined with instruction and proper intonation.
मनसा ध्यायतस्तस्य प्राङ्मुखस्य कृताञ्जलेः ।
आजग्मुस्तानि सर्वाणि दैवतानि पृथक्पृथक् ॥२०॥
20. manasā dhyāyatastasya prāṅmukhasya kṛtāñjaleḥ ,
ājagmustāni sarvāṇi daivatāni pṛthakpṛthak.
20. manasā dhyāyataḥ tasya prāṅmukhasya kṛtāñjaleḥ
ājagmuḥ tāni sarvāṇi devatāni pṛthakpṛthak
20. manasā dhyāyataḥ prāṅmukhasya kṛtāñjaleḥ tasya
tāni sarvāṇi devatāni pṛthakpṛthak ājagmuḥ
20. As he, facing east and with folded hands, was meditating (dhyāna) with his mind, all those deities came separately.
मलयं दुर्दुरं चैव ततः स्वेदनुदो ऽनिलः ।
उपस्पृश्य ववौ युक्त्या सुप्रियात्मा सुखः शिवः ॥२१॥
21. malayaṃ durduraṃ caiva tataḥ svedanudo'nilaḥ ,
upaspṛśya vavau yuktyā supriyātmā sukhaḥ śivaḥ.
21. malayam durduram ca eva tataḥ svedanudaḥ anilaḥ
upaspṛśya vavau yuktyā supriyātmā sukhaḥ śivaḥ
21. tataḥ supriyātmā sukhaḥ śivaḥ svedanudaḥ anilaḥ
malayam durduram ca eva upaspṛśya yuktyā vavau
21. Then, a pleasant, auspicious, and delightful wind (ātman), which dispels sweat, blew appropriately, having first touched the Malaya and Durdura (mountains).
ततो ऽभ्यवर्तन्त घना दिव्याः कुसुमवृष्टयः ।
देवदुन्दुभिघोषश्च दिक्षु सर्वासु शुश्रुवे ॥२२॥
22. tato'bhyavartanta ghanā divyāḥ kusumavṛṣṭayaḥ ,
devadundubhighoṣaśca dikṣu sarvāsu śuśruve.
22. tataḥ abhyavartanta ghanāḥ divyāḥ kusumavṛṣṭayaḥ
devadundubhīghoṣaḥ ca dikṣu sarvāsu śuśruve
22. tataḥ divyāḥ ghanāḥ kusumavṛṣṭayaḥ abhyavartanta
ca devadundubhīghoṣaḥ sarvāsu dikṣu śuśruve
22. Then, thick, divine showers of flowers fell. And the sound of divine drums was heard in all directions.
प्रववुश्चोत्तमा वाता ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः ।
प्रजगुर्देवगन्धर्वा वीणा प्रमुमुचुः स्वरान् ॥२३॥
23. pravavuścottamā vātā nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ ,
prajagurdevagandharvā vīṇā pramumucuḥ svarān.
23. pravavuḥ ca uttamāḥ vātāḥ nanṛtuḥ ca apsarogaṇāḥ
prajaguḥ devagandharvāḥ vīṇāḥ pramumucuḥ svarān
23. uttamāḥ vātāḥ ca pravavuḥ ca apsarogaṇāḥ nanṛtuḥ
devagandharvāḥ prajaguḥ vīṇāḥ svarān pramumucuḥ
23. Excellent winds blew, and groups of Apsaras danced. The divine Gandharvas sang, and lutes (vīṇās) emitted their melodies.
स शब्दो द्यां च भूमिं च प्राणिनां श्रवणानि च ।
विवेशोच्चारितः श्लक्ष्णः समो लयगुणान्वितः ॥२४॥
24. sa śabdo dyāṃ ca bhūmiṃ ca prāṇināṃ śravaṇāni ca ,
viveśoccāritaḥ ślakṣṇaḥ samo layaguṇānvitaḥ.
24. saḥ śabdaḥ dyām ca bhūmim ca prāṇinām śravaṇāni
ca viveśa uccāritaḥ ślakṣṇaḥ samaḥ layaguṇānvitaḥ
24. saḥ ślakṣṇaḥ samaḥ layaguṇānvitaḥ uccāritaḥ śabdaḥ
dyām ca bhūmim ca prāṇinām śravaṇāni ca viveśa
24. That soft, even, rhythmically endowed sound, when produced, entered both heaven and earth, and the ears of all living beings.
तस्मिन्नुपरते शब्दे दिव्ये श्रोत्रसुखे नृणाम् ।
ददर्श भारतं सैन्यं विधानं विश्वकर्मणः ॥२५॥
25. tasminnuparate śabde divye śrotrasukhe nṛṇām ,
dadarśa bhārataṃ sainyaṃ vidhānaṃ viśvakarmaṇaḥ.
25. tasmin uparate śabde divye śrotrasukhe nṛṇām
dadarśa bhāratam sainyam vidhānam viśvakarmaṇaḥ

25. When that divine sound, pleasant to the ears of men, ceased, he saw the Bharata army, an arrangement (vidhānam) crafted by Viśvakarman.
बभूव हि समा भूमिः समन्तात् पञ्चयोजनम् ।
शाद्वलैर्बहुभिश्छन्ना नीलवैदूर्यसंनिभैः ॥२६॥
26. babhūva hi samā bhūmiḥ samantāt pañcayojanam ,
śādvalairbahubhiśchannā nīlavaidūryasaṃnibhaiḥ.
26. babhūva hi samā bhūmiḥ samantāt pañcayojanam
śādvalaiḥ bahubhiḥ channā nīlavaidūryasaṃnibhaiḥ

26. Indeed, the ground became level for five *yojana*s all around, covered with many green lawns resembling blue lapis lazuli.
तस्मिन्बिल्वाः कपित्थाश्च पनसा बीजपूरकाः ।
आमलक्यो बभूवुश्च चूताश्च फलभूषणाः ॥२७॥
27. tasminbilvāḥ kapitthāśca panasā bījapūrakāḥ ,
āmalakyo babhūvuśca cūtāśca phalabhūṣaṇāḥ.
27. tasmin bilvāḥ kapitthāḥ ca panasāḥ bījapūrakāḥ
āmalakyaḥ babhūvuḥ ca cūtāḥ ca phalabhūṣaṇāḥ
27. tasmin bilvāḥ ca kapitthāḥ ca panasāḥ bījapūrakāḥ
ca āmalakyaḥ ca cūtāḥ phalabhūṣaṇāḥ babhūvuḥ
27. On it, bael trees, wood apple trees, jackfruit trees, and citron trees, as well as Amalaka trees and mango trees, became adorned with fruits.
उत्तरेभ्यः कुरुभ्यश्च वनं दिव्योपभोगवत् ।
आजगाम नदी दिव्या तीरजैर्बहुभिर्वृता ॥२८॥
28. uttarebhyaḥ kurubhyaśca vanaṃ divyopabhogavat ,
ājagāma nadī divyā tīrajairbahubhirvṛtā.

ājagāma nadī divyā tīrajaiḥ bahubhiḥ vṛtā

28. And from the Northern Kurus, a divine forest endowed with heavenly enjoyments came, as did a divine river surrounded by many bank-dwelling creatures.
चतुःशालानि शुभ्राणि शालाश्च गजवाजिनाम् ।
हर्म्यप्रासादसंघातास्तोरणानि शुभानि च ॥२९॥
29. catuḥśālāni śubhrāṇi śālāśca gajavājinām ,
harmyaprāsādasaṃghātāstoraṇāni śubhāni ca.
29. caturśālāni śubhrāṇi śālāḥ ca gajavājīnām
harmyaprāsādasaṃghātāḥ toraṇāni śubhāni ca
29. śubhrāṇi caturśālāni ca gajavājīnām śālāḥ ca

29. (The city had) bright four-sided mansions, and stables for elephants and horses, as well as clusters of palaces and lofty buildings, and beautiful archways.
सितमेघनिभं चापि राजवेश्म सुतोरणम् ।
शुक्लमाल्यकृताकारं दिव्यगन्धसमुक्षितम् ॥३०॥
30. sitameghanibhaṃ cāpi rājaveśma sutoraṇam ,
śuklamālyakṛtākāraṃ divyagandhasamukṣitam.
30. sitameghanibham ca api rājaveśma sutoraṇam
śuklamālyakṛtākāram divyagandhasamukṣitam
30. api ca rājaveśma sutoraṇam sitameghanibham
śuklamālyakṛtākāram divyagandhasamukṣitam
30. Also, the royal palace, adorned with beautiful gateways, resembled a white cloud. Its appearance was enhanced by white garlands, and it was profusely sprinkled with divine fragrances.
चतुरस्रमसंबाधं शयनासनयानवत् ।
दिव्यैः सर्वरसैर्युक्तं दिव्यभोजनवस्त्रवत् ॥३१॥

31. It was quadrangular and spacious, equipped with beds, seats, and conveyances. It was furnished with all divine tastes (or essences) and provided with divine food and clothing.
उपकल्पित सर्वान्नं धौतनिर्मलभाजनम् ।
कॢप्तसर्वासनं श्रीमत् स्वास्तीर्णशयनोत्तमम् ॥३२॥

32. All kinds of food were prepared, and the vessels were washed and clean. All seats were arranged, and it featured splendid, excellent, and well-spread beds.
प्रविवेश महाबाहुरनुज्ञातो महर्षिणा ।
वेश्म तद् रत्नसंपूर्णं भरतः कैकयीसुतः ॥३३॥
33. praviveśa mahābāhuranujñāto maharṣiṇā ,
veśma tad ratnasaṃpūrṇaṃ bharataḥ kaikayīsutaḥ.

33. The mighty-armed Bharata, son of Kaikeyī, having been permitted by the great sage, entered that palace which was filled with jewels.
अनुजग्मुश्च तं सर्वे मन्त्रिणः सपुरोहिताः ।
बभूवुश्च मुदा युक्ता तं दृष्ट्वा वेश्म संविधिम् ॥३४॥
34. anujagmuśca taṃ sarve mantriṇaḥ sapurohitāḥ ,
babhūvuśca mudā yuktā taṃ dṛṣṭvā veśma saṃvidhim.

34. And all the ministers, accompanied by the priests, followed him. Seeing the splendid arrangement of that palace, they were filled with joy.
तत्र राजासनं दिव्यं व्यजनं छत्रमेव च ।
भरतो मन्त्रिभिः सार्धमभ्यवर्तत राजवत् ॥३५॥
35. tatra rājāsanaṃ divyaṃ vyajanaṃ chatrameva ca ,
bharato mantribhiḥ sārdhamabhyavartata rājavat.

35. There was the splendid royal throne, along with a fan and a parasol. Bharata, accompanied by his ministers, conducted himself like a king.
आसनं पूजयामास रामायाभिप्रणम्य च ।
वालव्यजनमादाय न्यषीदत् सचिवासने ॥३६॥
36. āsanaṃ pūjayāmāsa rāmāyābhipraṇamya ca ,
vālavyajanamādāya nyaṣīdat sacivāsane.

36. Having bowed down to Rāma, he honored the royal throne. And taking up the yak-tail whisk, he sat down on a minister's seat.

ततः सेनापतिः पश्चात् प्रशास्ता च निषेदतुः ॥३७॥
37. ānupūrvyānniṣeduśca sarve mantrapurohitāḥ ,

37. All the counselors and priests sat down in proper order. Subsequently, the general and the commander also sat down.

उपातिष्ठन्त भरतं भरद्वाजस्य शासनत् ॥३८॥
38. tatastatra muhūrtena nadyaḥ pāyasakardamāḥ ,

38. Then, in that place, within a moment, rivers whose mud was made of rice-pudding appeared before Bharata, by the instruction of Bharadvaja.
तासामुभयतः कूलं पाण्डुमृत्तिकलेपनाः ।
रम्याश्चावसथा दिव्या ब्रह्मणस्तु प्रसादजाः ॥३९॥
39. tāsāmubhayataḥ kūlaṃ pāṇḍumṛttikalepanāḥ ,
ramyāścāvasathā divyā brahmaṇastu prasādajāḥ.

39. On both banks of those rivers, beautiful and divine dwellings, plastered with white clay, which were born from the grace (prasāda) of Brahma, came into being.
तेनैव च मुहूर्तेन दिव्याभरणभूषिताः ।
आगुर्विंशतिसाहस्रा ब्रह्मणा प्रहिताः स्त्रियः ॥४०॥
40. tenaiva ca muhūrtena divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ ,

40. And at that very moment, twenty thousand women, adorned with divine ornaments and dispatched by Brahma, arrived.
सुवर्णमणिमुक्तेन प्रवालेन च शोभिताः ।
आगुर्विंशतिसाहस्राः कुबेरप्रहिताः स्त्रियः ॥४१॥
41. suvarṇamaṇimuktena pravālena ca śobhitāḥ ,

41. Twenty thousand women, sent by Kubera and adorned with gold, gems, pearls, and coral, arrived.
याभिर्गृहीतः पुरुषः सोन्माद इव लक्ष्यते ।
आगुर्विंशतिसाहस्रा नन्दनादप्सरोगणाः ॥४२॥
42. yābhirgṛhītaḥ puruṣaḥ sonmāda iva lakṣyate ,
āgurviṃśatisāhasrā nandanādapsarogaṇāḥ.

42. From Nandana arrived twenty thousand throngs of Apsaras (celestial nymphs), by whom a man, if seized, appears as if mad.
नारदस्तुम्बुरुर्गोपः पर्वतः सूर्यवर्चसः ।
एते गन्धर्वराजानो भरतस्याग्रतो जगुः ॥४३॥
43. nāradastumbururgopaḥ parvataḥ sūryavarcasaḥ ,
ete gandharvarājāno bharatasyāgrato jaguḥ.

43. Narada, Tumburu, Gopa, Parvata, and Sūryavarcas – these kings of Gandharvas sang before Bharata.
अलम्बुसा मिश्रकेशी पुण्डरीकाथ वामना ।
उपानृत्यंस्तु भरतं भरद्वाजस्य शासनात् ॥४४॥
44. alambusā miśrakeśī puṇḍarīkātha vāmanā ,
upānṛtyaṃstu bharataṃ bharadvājasya śāsanāt.

44. Alambusa, Miśrakeśī, Puṇḍarīkā, and Vāmanā danced for Bharata at the command of Bharadvāja.
यानि माल्यानि देवेषु यानि चैत्ररथे वने ।
प्रयागे तान्यदृश्यन्त भरद्वाजस्य शासनात् ॥४५॥
45. yāni mālyāni deveṣu yāni caitrarathe vane ,
prayāge tānyadṛśyanta bharadvājasya śāsanāt.

45. Whatever garlands were among the gods, and whatever were in the Caitraratha forest, all those were seen in Prayaga by the command of Bharadvaja.
बिल्वा मार्दङ्गिका आसञ् शम्या ग्राहा बिभीतकाः ।
अश्वत्था नर्तकाश्चासन्भरद्वाजस्य तेजसा ॥४६॥
46. bilvā mārdaṅgikā āsañ śamyā grāhā bibhītakāḥ ,
aśvatthā nartakāścāsanbharadvājasya tejasā.

46. The Bilva trees became drummers, the Śamyā trees became performers, and the Bibhītaka trees and Aśvattha trees became dancers, all by the spiritual power (tejas) of Bharadvaja.
ततः सरलतालाश्च तिलका नक्तमालकाः ।
प्रहृष्टास्तत्र संपेतुः कुब्जाभूताथ वामनाः ॥४७॥
47. tataḥ saralatālāśca tilakā naktamālakāḥ ,
prahṛṣṭāstatra saṃpetuḥ kubjābhūtātha vāmanāḥ.

47. Then, the Sarala, Tāla, Tilaka, and Naktamalaka trees, exceedingly joyful, arrived there, transformed into hunchbacks and dwarfs.
शिंशपामलकी जम्बूर्याश्चान्याः कानने लताः ।
प्रमदा विग्रहं कृत्वा भरद्वाजाश्रमे ऽवसन् ॥४८॥
48. śiṃśapāmalakī jambūryāścānyāḥ kānane latāḥ ,
pramadā vigrahaṃ kṛtvā bharadvājāśrame'vasan.

48. The Shimsapa, Amalaki, Jambu, and other creepers in the forest, having assumed the forms of beautiful women, resided in Bharadvaja's hermitage.
सुरां सुरापाः पिबत पायसं च बुभुक्शिताः ।
मांसनि च सुमेध्यानि भक्ष्यन्तां यावदिच्छथ ॥४९॥
49. surāṃ surāpāḥ pibata pāyasaṃ ca bubhukśitāḥ ,
māṃsani ca sumedhyāni bhakṣyantāṃ yāvadicchatha.

49. O drinkers of wine, drink wine! And you who are hungry, consume milk-rice pudding and wholesome meats as much as you desire.
उत्साद्य स्नापयन्ति स्म नदीतीरेषु वल्गुषु ।
अप्येकमेकं पुरुषं प्रमदाः सत्प चाष्ट च ॥५०॥
50. utsādya snāpayanti sma nadītīreṣu valguṣu ,
apyekamekaṃ puruṣaṃ pramadāḥ satpa cāṣṭa ca.

50. Seven or eight beautiful women would massage each man and make him bathe on the lovely river banks.
संवहन्त्यः समापेतुर्नार्यो रुचिरलोचनाः ।
परिमृज्य तथान्योन्यं पाययन्ति वराङ्गनाः ॥५१॥
51. saṃvahantyaḥ samāpeturnāryo ruciralocanāḥ ,
parimṛjya tathānyonyaṃ pāyayanti varāṅganāḥ.

parimṛjya tathā anyonyam pāyayanti varāṅganāḥ

51. Beautiful-eyed women gathered, attending (to the guests). And similarly, excellent women, after massaging each other, also made each other drink.
हयान् गजान् खरानुष्ट्रांस्तथैव सुरभेः सुतान् ।
इक्षूंश्च मधुजालांश्च भोजयन्ति स्म वाहनान् ।
इक्ष्वाकुवरयोधानां चोदयन्तो महाबलाः ॥५२॥
52. hayān gajān kharānuṣṭrāṃstathaiva surabheḥ sutān ,
ikṣūṃśca madhujālāṃśca bhojayanti sma vāhanān ,
ikṣvākuvarayodhānāṃ codayanto mahābalāḥ.

52. The powerful ones, while encouraging the best warriors of the Ikshvaku dynasty, fed the mounts - horses, elephants, donkeys, camels, and cattle, the offspring of Surabhi - with sugarcane and honeycombs.
नाश्वबन्धो ऽश्वमाजानान्न गजं कुञ्जरग्रहः ।
मत्तप्रमत्तमुदिता चमूः सा तत्र संबभौ ॥५३॥
53. nāśvabandho'śvamājānānna gajaṃ kuñjaragrahaḥ ,
mattapramattamuditā camūḥ sā tatra saṃbabhau.
53. na aśvabandhaḥ aśvam ājānāt na gajam kuñjaragrahaḥ
matta-pramatta-muditā camūḥ sā tatra saṃbabhau

53. Neither did the horse-keeper recognize his horse, nor the elephant-driver his elephant. That army, intoxicated, bewildered, and joyous, shone forth there.
तर्पिता सर्वकामैस्ते रक्तचन्दनरूषिताः ।
अप्सरोगणसंयुक्ताः सैन्या वाचमुदैरयन् ॥५४॥
54. tarpitā sarvakāmaiste raktacandanarūṣitāḥ ,
apsarogaṇasaṃyuktāḥ sainyā vācamudairayan.

54. Satisfied with all their desires and smeared with red sandalwood, those soldiers, accompanied by throngs of celestial nymphs (apsaras), uttered these words.
नैवायोध्यां गमिष्यामो न गमिष्याम दण्डकान् ।
कुशलं भरतस्यास्तु रामस्यास्तु तथा सुखम् ॥५५॥
55. naivāyodhyāṃ gamiṣyāmo na gamiṣyāma daṇḍakān ,
kuśalaṃ bharatasyāstu rāmasyāstu tathā sukham.
55. na eva ayodhyām gamiṣyāmaḥ na gamiṣyāma daṇḍakān
kuśalam bharatasya astu rāmasya astu tathā sukham
55. ayodhyām eva na gamiṣyāmaḥ daṇḍakān na gamiṣyāma

55. We will certainly not go to Ayodhya, nor will we go to the Dandaka forests. May there be well-being for Bharata, and likewise, happiness for Rama.
इति पादातयोधाश्च हस्त्यश्वारोहबन्धकाः ।
अनाथास्तं विधिं लब्ध्वा वाचमेतामुदैरयन् ॥५६॥
56. iti pādātayodhāśca hastyaśvārohabandhakāḥ ,
anāthāstaṃ vidhiṃ labdhvā vācametāmudairayan.

56. Thus, the foot-soldiers, and the elephant and horse riders, having attained that favorable condition while being helpless, uttered these very words.
संप्रहृष्टा विनेदुस्ते नरास्तत्र सहस्रशः ।
भरतस्यानुयातारः स्वर्गे ऽयमिति चाब्रुवन् ॥५७॥
57. saṃprahṛṣṭā vineduste narāstatra sahasraśaḥ ,
bharatasyānuyātāraḥ svarge'yamiti cābruvan.

57. Thousands of Bharata's followers, greatly delighted, cried out there, saying, "This is heaven!" and they spoke.
ततो भुक्तवतां तेषां तदन्नममृतोपमम् ।
दिव्यानुद्वीक्ष्य भक्ष्यांस्तानभवद्भक्षणे मतिः ॥५८॥
58. tato bhuktavatāṃ teṣāṃ tadannamamṛtopamam ,
divyānudvīkṣya bhakṣyāṃstānabhavadbhakṣaṇe matiḥ.
58. tataḥ bhuktavatām teṣām tat annam amṛtopamam divyān
udvīkṣya bhakṣyān tān abhavat bhakṣaṇe matiḥ

58. Then, even after those who had partaken of that nectar-like food, a desire arose in them to consume those other divine delicacies upon seeing them.
प्रेष्याश्चेट्यश्च वध्वश्च बलस्थाश्चापि सर्वशः ।
बभूवुस्ते भृशं तृप्ताः सर्वे चाहतवाससः ॥५९॥
59. preṣyāśceṭyaśca vadhvaśca balasthāścāpi sarvaśaḥ ,
babhūvuste bhṛśaṃ tṛptāḥ sarve cāhatavāsasaḥ.

59. All of them - the servants, maidservants, wives, and soldiers - became exceedingly satisfied, and all were clothed in fresh, unsoiled garments.
कुञ्जराश्च खरोष्ट्रश्च गोऽश्वाश्च मृगपक्षिणः ।
बभूवुः सुभृतास्तत्र नान्यो ह्यन्यमकल्पयत् ॥६०॥
60. kuñjarāśca kharoṣṭraśca go'śvāśca mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ,
babhūvuḥ subhṛtāstatra nānyo hyanyamakalpayat.

babhūvuḥ subhṛtāḥ tatra na anyaḥ hi anyam akalpayat
60. tatra kuñjarāḥ ca kharoṣṭrāḥ ca goaśvāḥ ca mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ
subhṛtāḥ babhūvuḥ hi anyaḥ anyam na akalpayat
60. Elephants, donkeys and camels, cows and horses, and deer and birds - all became well-nourished there. Indeed, no one had to make provisions for another, as all were fully cared for.
नाशुक्लवासास्तत्रासीत् क्षुधितो मलिनो ऽपि वा ।
रजसा ध्वस्तकेशो वा नरः कश्चिददृश्यत ॥६१॥
61. nāśuklavāsāstatrāsīt kṣudhito malino'pi vā ,
rajasā dhvastakeśo vā naraḥ kaścidadṛśyata.
61. na aśuklavāsāḥ tatra āsīt kṣudhitaḥ malinaḥ api
vā rajasā dhvastakeśaḥ vā naraḥ kaścit adṛśyata
61. tatra kaścit naraḥ na adṛśyata aśuklavāsāḥ vā

61. No one there was seen wearing unclean garments, nor was anyone hungry, dirty, or with hair dishevelled by dust.
आजैश्चापि च वाराहैर्निष्ठानवरसंचयैः ।
फलनिर्यूहसंसिद्धैः सूपैर्गन्धरसान्वितैः ॥६२॥
62. ājaiścāpi ca vārāhairniṣṭhānavarasaṃcayaiḥ ,
phalaniryūhasaṃsiddhaiḥ sūpairgandharasānvitaiḥ.

62. Dishes of goat and boar meat, along with collections of various excellent cooked foods, and soups prepared perfectly with fruit extracts, endowed with delightful aromas and flavors.
पुष्पध्वजवतीः पूर्णाः शुक्लस्यान्नस्य चाभितः ।
ददृशुर्विस्मितास्तत्र नरा लौहीः सहस्रशः ॥६३॥
63. puṣpadhvajavatīḥ pūrṇāḥ śuklasyānnasya cābhitaḥ ,
dadṛśurvismitāstatra narā lauhīḥ sahasraśaḥ.

63. There, astonished men saw thousands of iron vessels, decorated with flower banners, filled all around with white food.
बभूवुर्वनपार्श्वेषु कूपाः पायसकर्दमाः ।
ताश्च कामदुघा गावो द्रुमाश्चासन्मधुश्च्युतः ॥६४॥
64. babhūvurvanapārśveṣu kūpāḥ pāyasakardamāḥ ,
tāśca kāmadughā gāvo drumāścāsanmadhuścyutaḥ.

64. On the edges of the forest, there were wells with mud like rice pudding. And those cows yielded all desires, while the trees dripped honey.
वाप्यो मैरेयपूर्णाश्च मृष्टमांसचयैर्वृताः ।
प्रतप्तपिठरैश्चापि मार्गमायूरकौक्कुटैः ॥६५॥
65. vāpyo maireyapūrṇāśca mṛṣṭamāṃsacayairvṛtāḥ ,
prataptapiṭharaiścāpi mārgamāyūrakaukkuṭaiḥ.

65. Ponds were filled with Maireya liquor and surrounded by piles of delicious meat. There were also heated cooking pots containing venison, peacock, and chicken.
पात्रीणां च सहस्राणि शातकुम्भमयानि च ।
स्थाल्यः कुम्भ्यः करम्भ्यश्च दधिपूर्णाः सुसंस्कृताः ।
यौवनस्थस्य गौरस्य कपित्थस्य सुगन्धिनः ॥६६॥
66. pātrīṇāṃ ca sahasrāṇi śātakumbhamayāni ca ,
sthālyaḥ kumbhyaḥ karambhyaśca dadhipūrṇāḥ susaṃskṛtāḥ ,
yauvanasthasya gaurasya kapitthasya sugandhinaḥ.

66. Thousands of golden vessels were present. Large pots, pitchers, and dishes were filled with well-prepared curds, derived from a young, white cow, and fragrant wood apple.
ह्रदाः पूर्णा रसालस्य दध्नः श्वेतस्य चापरे ।
बभूवुः पायसस्यान्ते शर्करायाश्च संचयाः ॥६७॥
67. hradāḥ pūrṇā rasālasya dadhnaḥ śvetasya cāpare ,
babhūvuḥ pāyasasyānte śarkarāyāśca saṃcayāḥ.

67. Pools were full of mango juice, and others were full of white curds. Lastly, there were also piles of rice pudding and sugar.
कल्कांश्चूर्णकषायांश्च स्नानानि विविधानि च ।
ददृशुर्भाजनस्थानि तीर्थेषु सरितां नराः ॥६८॥
68. kalkāṃścūrṇakaṣāyāṃśca snānāni vividhāni ca ,
dadṛśurbhājanasthāni tīrtheṣu saritāṃ narāḥ.

68. The people saw various pastes, powdered astringents, and bathing preparations, all kept in vessels, at the sacred bathing places (tīrtha) of the rivers.
शुक्लानंशुमतश्चापि दन्तधावनसंचयान् ।
शुक्लांश्चन्दनकल्कांश्च समुद्गेष्ववतिष्ठतः ॥६९॥
69. śuklānaṃśumataścāpi dantadhāvanasaṃcayān ,
śuklāṃścandanakalkāṃśca samudgeṣvavatiṣṭhataḥ.

69. And also white, radiant collections of tooth-cleaning materials, and white sandalwood pastes, remaining in small caskets.
दर्पणान्परिमृष्टांश्च वाससां चापि संचयान् ।
पादुकोपानहां चैव युग्मान्यत्र सहस्रशः ॥७०॥
70. darpaṇānparimṛṣṭāṃśca vāsasāṃ cāpi saṃcayān ,
pādukopānahāṃ caiva yugmānyatra sahasraśaḥ.

70. And also well-polished mirrors, and collections of clothes, and indeed thousands of pairs of sandals and shoes were there.
आञ्जनीः कङ्कतान् कूर्चांश्छत्राणि च धनूंषि च ।
मर्मत्राणानि चित्राणि शयनान्यासनानि च ॥७१॥
71. āñjanīḥ kaṅkatān kūrcāṃśchatrāṇi ca dhanūṃṣi ca ,
marmatrāṇāni citrāṇi śayanānyāsanāni ca.

71. Collyrium boxes, combs, brushes, and umbrellas, and bows, various body armors, beds, and seats.
प्रतिपानह्रदान्पूर्णान् खरोष्ट्रगजवाजिनाम् ।
अवगाह्य सुतीर्थांश्च ह्रदान् सोत्पल पुष्करान् ॥७२॥
72. pratipānahradānpūrṇān kharoṣṭragajavājinām ,
avagāhya sutīrthāṃśca hradān sotpala puṣkarān.

72. Full drinking ponds for donkeys, camels, elephants, and horses, and also ponds with excellent bathing banks (tīrtha), containing lotuses and water-lilies, suitable for immersion.
नीलवैदूर्यवर्णांश्च मृदून्यवससंचयान् ।
निर्वापार्थं पशूनां ते ददृशुस्तत्र सर्वशः ॥७३॥
73. nīlavaidūryavarṇāṃśca mṛdūnyavasasaṃcayān ,
nirvāpārthaṃ paśūnāṃ te dadṛśustatra sarvaśaḥ.

73. They saw everywhere soft, blue-lapis-lazuli-colored heaps of fodder for the sustenance of the animals.
व्यस्मयन्त मनुष्यास्ते स्वप्नकल्पं तदद्भुतम् ।
दृष्ट्वातिथ्यं कृतं तादृग्भरतस्य महर्षिणा ॥७४॥
74. vyasmayanta manuṣyāste svapnakalpaṃ tadadbhutam ,
dṛṣṭvātithyaṃ kṛtaṃ tādṛgbharatasya maharṣiṇā.

dṛṣṭvā ātithyam kṛtam tādṛk bharatasya maharṣiṇā

74. Those men were greatly amazed by that dream-like marvel, having seen such hospitality shown to Bharata by the great sage.
इत्येवं रममाणानां देवानामिव नन्दने ।
भरद्वाजाश्रमे रम्ये सा रात्रिर्व्यत्यवर्तत ॥७५॥
75. ityevaṃ ramamāṇānāṃ devānāmiva nandane ,
bharadvājāśrame ramye sā rātrirvyatyavartata.

75. While they enjoyed themselves in Bharadvāja's charming hermitage (āśrama), like gods in the Nandana garden, that night passed.
प्रतिजग्मुश्च ता नद्यो गन्धर्वाश्च यथागतम् ।
भरद्वाजमनुज्ञाप्य ताश्च सर्वा वराङ्गनाः ॥७६॥
76. pratijagmuśca tā nadyo gandharvāśca yathāgatam ,
bharadvājamanujñāpya tāśca sarvā varāṅganāḥ.

bharadvājam anujñāpya tāḥ ca sarvāḥ varāṅganāḥ

76. And those river goddesses, and the Gandharvas, and all those beautiful women returned as they had come, after taking leave of Bharadvāja.
तथैव मत्ता मदिरोत्कटा नरास्तथैव दिव्यागुरुचन्दनोक्षिताः ।
तथैव दिव्या विविधाः स्रगुत्तमाः पृथक्प्रकीर्णा मनुजैः प्रमर्दिताः ॥७७॥
77. tathaiva mattā madirotkaṭā narāstathaiva divyāgurucandanokṣitāḥ ,
tathaiva divyā vividhāḥ sraguttamāḥ pṛthakprakīrṇā manujaiḥ pramarditāḥ.

77. Just so, men were intoxicated and overwhelmed by liquor, and likewise, they were sprinkled with divine agallochum and sandalwood. Similarly, various excellent divine garlands, strewn about, were trampled by these very men.
