ततो निकुम्भो रभसः सूर्यशत्रुर्महाबलः ।
सुप्तघ्नो यज्ञकोपश्च महापार्श्वो महोदरः ॥१॥

1. Then [came] Nikumbha, the impetuous Suryashatru, the immensely powerful Suptaghna, and Yajñakopa (angered by [Vedic] ritual (yajña)), Mahāpārśva, and Mahodara.
अग्निकेतुश्च दुर्धर्षो रश्मिकेतुश्च राक्षसः ।
इन्द्रजिच्च महातेजा बलवान् रावणात्मजः ॥२॥
2. agniketuśca durdharṣo raśmiketuśca rākṣasaḥ ,
indrajicca mahātejā balavān rāvaṇātmajaḥ.

2. Agniketu, the formidable, and Rashmiketu, the demon; and Indrajit, who was greatly radiant, powerful, and the son of Rāvaṇa.
प्रहस्तो ऽथ विरूपाक्षो वज्रदंष्ट्रो महाबलः ।
धूम्राक्षश्चातिकायश्च दुर्मुखश्चैव राक्षसः ॥३॥
3. prahasto'tha virūpākṣo vajradaṃṣṭro mahābalaḥ ,
dhūmrākṣaścātikāyaśca durmukhaścaiva rākṣasaḥ.

3. Then Prahasta, Virūpākṣa, Vajradaṃṣṭra, who was greatly mighty, and Dhūmrākṣa, Atikāya, and Durmukha, also a demon.
परिघान्पट्टसान्प्रासाञ् शक्तिशूलपरश्वधान् ।
चापानि च सबाणानि खड्गांश्च विपुलाञ् शितान् ॥४॥
4. parighānpaṭṭasānprāsāñ śaktiśūlaparaśvadhān ,
cāpāni ca sabāṇāni khaḍgāṃśca vipulāñ śitān.
4. parighān paṭṭasān prāsān śakti śūla paraśvadhān
cāpāni ca sabāṇāni khaḍgān ca vipulān śitān
4. (te) parighān paṭṭasān prāsān śakti śūla paraśvadhān ca
sabāṇāni cāpāni ca vipulān śitān khaḍgān pragṛhya (held)
4. (They held) iron clubs, battle-axes, spears, javelins, pikes, and battle-axes; and bows with arrows, and broad, sharp swords.
प्रगृह्य परमक्रुद्धाः समुत्पत्य च राक्षसाः ।
अब्रुवन् रावणं सर्वे प्रदीप्ता इव तेजसा ॥५॥
5. pragṛhya paramakruddhāḥ samutpatya ca rākṣasāḥ ,
abruvan rāvaṇaṃ sarve pradīptā iva tejasā.

5. Holding these (weapons), and extremely enraged, all the demons sprang up, as if blazing with energy, and spoke to Rāvaṇa.
अद्य रामं वधिष्यामः सुग्रीवं च सलक्ष्मणम् ।
कृपणं च हनूमन्तं लङ्का येन प्रधर्षिता ॥६॥
6. adya rāmaṃ vadhiṣyāmaḥ sugrīvaṃ ca salakṣmaṇam ,
kṛpaṇaṃ ca hanūmantaṃ laṅkā yena pradharṣitā.
6. adya rāmam vadhiṣyāmaḥ sugrīvam ca salakṣmaṇam
kṛpaṇam ca hanūmantaṃ laṅkā yena pradharṣitā
6. adya rāmam salakṣmaṇam sugrīvam ca,
yena laṅkā pradharṣitā,
kṛpaṇam hanūmantaṃ ca vadhiṣyāmaḥ
6. Today we will kill Rama, and Sugriva along with Lakshmana, as well as the contemptible Hanuman, by whom Lanka was ravaged.
तान् गृहीतायुधान् सर्वान् वारयित्वा विभीषणः ।
अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं पुनः प्रत्युपवेश्य तान् ॥७॥
7. tān gṛhītāyudhān sarvān vārayitvā vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
abravīt prāñjalirvākyaṃ punaḥ pratyupaveśya tān.
7. tān gṛhītāyudhān sarvān vārayitvā vibhīṣaṇaḥ
abravīt prāñjaliḥ vākyaṃ punaḥ pratyupaveśya tān
7. vibhīṣaṇaḥ gṛhītāyudhān sarvān tān vārayitvā

7. Vibhishana, having first restrained all of them who had taken up their weapons, and then having made them sit down again, spoke these words with folded hands.
अप्युपायैस्त्रिभिस्तात यो ऽर्थः प्राप्तुं न शक्यते ।
तस्य विक्रमकालांस्तान्युक्तानाहुर्मनीषिणः ॥८॥
8. apyupāyaistribhistāta yo'rthaḥ prāptuṃ na śakyate ,
tasya vikramakālāṃstānyuktānāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ.
8. api upāyaiḥ tribhiḥ tāta yaḥ arthaḥ prāptuṃ na
śakyate tasya vikramakālān tān yuktān āhuḥ manīṣiṇaḥ
8. tāta,
yaḥ arthaḥ api tribhiḥ upāyaiḥ prāptuṃ na śakyate,
tasya tān vikramakālān yuktān manīṣiṇaḥ āhuḥ
8. O dear one, wise persons declare that those times are suitable for courageous action when an objective cannot be achieved even by the three conventional means (upāyāḥ).
प्रमत्तेष्वभियुक्तेषु दैवेन प्रहतेषु च ।
विक्रमास्तात सिध्यन्ति परीक्ष्य विधिना कृताः ॥९॥
9. pramatteṣvabhiyukteṣu daivena prahateṣu ca ,
vikramāstāta sidhyanti parīkṣya vidhinā kṛtāḥ.
9. pramatteṣu abhiyukteṣu daivena prahateṣu ca
vikramāḥ tāta sidhyanti parīkṣya vidhinā kṛtāḥ
9. tāta,
pramatteṣu abhiyukteṣu daivena prahateṣu ca,
parīkṣya vidhinā kṛtāḥ vikramāḥ sidhyanti
9. O dear one, acts of valor, when performed after careful consideration and according to the proper method, succeed against those who are negligent, engaged (in battle), or afflicted by fate.
अप्रमत्तं कथं तं तु विजिगीषुं बले स्थितम् ।
जितरोषं दुराधर्षं प्रधर्षयितुमिच्छथ ॥१०॥
10. apramattaṃ kathaṃ taṃ tu vijigīṣuṃ bale sthitam ,
jitaroṣaṃ durādharṣaṃ pradharṣayitumicchatha.
10. apramattam katham tam tu vijigīṣum bale sthitam
jitaroṣam durādharṣam pradharṣayitum icchatha
10. katham tu yūyam apramattam bale sthitam jitaroṣam
durādharṣam tam vijigīṣum pradharṣayitum icchatha
10. How then do you wish to assault him, who is vigilant, firmly established in his strength, has conquered his anger, is invincible, and is always desirous of victory?
समुद्रं लङ्घयित्वा तु घोरं नदनदीपतिम् ।
कृतं हनुमता कर्म दुष्करं तर्कयेत कः ॥११॥
11. samudraṃ laṅghayitvā tu ghoraṃ nadanadīpatim ,
kṛtaṃ hanumatā karma duṣkaraṃ tarkayeta kaḥ.
11. samudram laṅghayitvā tu ghoram nadanadīpatim
kṛtam hanumatā karma duṣkaram tarkayeta kaḥ
11. kaḥ tu tarkayeta yat hanumatā ghoram nadanadīpatim
samudram laṅghayitvā duṣkaram karma kṛtam
11. Who could have imagined that Hanuman performed such an arduous feat as crossing the terrible ocean, the lord of all rivers and streams?
बलान्यपरिमेयानि वीर्याणि च निशाचराः ।
परेषां सहसावज्ञा न कर्तव्या कथं चन ॥१२॥
12. balānyaparimeyāni vīryāṇi ca niśācarāḥ ,
pareṣāṃ sahasāvajñā na kartavyā kathaṃ cana.
12. balāni aparimeyāni vīryāṇi ca niśācarāḥ
pareṣām sahasā avajñā na kartavyā katham cana
12. he niśācarāḥ,
pareṣām aparimeyāni balāni ca vīryāṇi santi.
sahasā avajñā katham cana na kartavyā.
12. O Rākṣasas, the forces and prowess of enemies are immeasurable. Hasty contempt should never be shown towards them in any way.
किं च राक्षसराजस्य रामेणापकृतं पुरा ।
आजहार जनस्थानाद् यस्य भार्यां यशस्विनः ॥१३॥
13. kiṃ ca rākṣasarājasya rāmeṇāpakṛtaṃ purā ,
ājahāra janasthānād yasya bhāryāṃ yaśasvinaḥ.
13. kim ca rākṣasarājasya rāmeṇa apakṛtam purā
ājahāra janasthānāt yasya bhāryām yaśasvinaḥ
13. kim ca purā rāmeṇa rākṣasarājasya kim apakṛtam,
yat saḥ janasthānāt yasya yaśasvinaḥ bhāryām ājahāra.
13. Moreover, what wrong was done by Rāma to the king of Rākṣasas earlier, that he (Rāvaṇa) carried off the wife of that glorious one (Rāma) from Janasthāna?
खरो यद्यतिवृत्तस्तु रामेण निहतो रणे ।
अवश्यं प्राणिनां प्राणा रक्षितव्या यथा बलम् ॥१४॥
14. kharo yadyativṛttastu rāmeṇa nihato raṇe ,
avaśyaṃ prāṇināṃ prāṇā rakṣitavyā yathā balam.
14. kharaḥ yadi ati-vṛttaḥ tu rāmeṇa nihataḥ raṇe
avaśyam prāṇinām prāṇāḥ rakṣitavyāḥ yathā balam
14. yadi kharaḥ ati-vṛttaḥ tu rāmeṇa raṇe nihataḥ
avaśyam prāṇinām prāṇāḥ yathā balam rakṣitavyāḥ
14. Even though Khara, having exceedingly transgressed, was killed by Rama in battle, nevertheless, the lives of living beings must certainly be protected according to one's strength.
एतन्निमित्तं वैदेही भयं नः सुमहद्भवेत् ।
आहृता सा परित्याज्या कलहार्थे कृते न किम् ॥१५॥
15. etannimittaṃ vaidehī bhayaṃ naḥ sumahadbhavet ,
āhṛtā sā parityājyā kalahārthe kṛte na kim.
15. etat nimittam vaidehī bhayam naḥ sumahat bhavet
āhṛtā sā parityājyā kalaha-arthe kṛte na kim
15. etat nimittam naḥ sumahat bhayam vaidehī bhavet
sā āhṛtā parityājyā kalaha-arthe kṛte na kim
15. Due to Vaidehi, great fear may arise for us. She, having been abducted, should be abandoned. Why not, since a quarrel has already been initiated [because of her]?
न नः क्षमं वीर्यवता तेन धर्मानुवर्तिना ।
वैरं निरर्थकं कर्तुं दीयतामस्य मैथिली ॥१६॥
16. na naḥ kṣamaṃ vīryavatā tena dharmānuvartinā ,
vairaṃ nirarthakaṃ kartuṃ dīyatāmasya maithilī.
16. na naḥ kṣamam vīryavatā tena dharma-anuvartinā
vairam nirarthakam kartum dīyatām asya maithilī
16. naḥ vīryavatā tena dharma-anuvartinā nirarthakam
vairam kartum na kṣamam asya maithilī dīyatām
16. It is not proper for us to create a meaningless enmity with that valiant follower of natural law (dharma). Let Maithili be given back to him.
यावन्न सगजां साश्वां बहुरत्नसमाकुलाम् ।
पुरीं दारयते बाणैर्दीयतामस्य मैथिली ॥१७॥
17. yāvanna sagajāṃ sāśvāṃ bahuratnasamākulām ,
purīṃ dārayate bāṇairdīyatāmasya maithilī.
17. yāvat na sa-gajām sa-aśvām bahu-ratna-samākulām
purīm dārayate bāṇaiḥ dīyatām asya maithilī
17. yāvat na sa-gajām sa-aśvām bahu-ratna-samākulām
purīm bāṇaiḥ dārayate asya maithilī dīyatām
17. Before he tears apart our city - which is filled with elephants, horses, and many jewels - with his arrows, let Maithili be given back to him.
यावत् सुघोरा महती दुर्धर्षा हरिवाहिनी ।
नावस्कन्दति नो लङ्कां तावत् सीता प्रदीयताम् ॥१८॥
18. yāvat sughorā mahatī durdharṣā harivāhinī ,
nāvaskandati no laṅkāṃ tāvat sītā pradīyatām.
18. yāvat sughorā mahatī durdharṣā harivāhinī na
avaskandati naḥ laṅkām tāvat sītā pradīyatām

18. Before the exceedingly fierce, mighty, and unconquerable monkey army attacks our Lanka, Sītā should be returned.
विनश्येद्धि पुरी लङ्का शूराः सर्वे च राक्षसाः ।
रामस्य दयिता पत्नी न स्वयं यदि दीयते ॥१९॥
19. vinaśyeddhi purī laṅkā śūrāḥ sarve ca rākṣasāḥ ,
rāmasya dayitā patnī na svayaṃ yadi dīyate.
19. vinaśyet hi purī laṅkā śūrāḥ sarve ca rākṣasāḥ
rāmasya dayitā patnī na svayam yadi dīyate
19. yadi rāmasya dayitā patnī svayam na dīyate,
hi purī laṅkā ca sarve śūrāḥ rākṣasāḥ vinaśyet
19. Indeed, the city of Lanka and all the brave Rākṣasas will be destroyed if Rāma's beloved wife is not returned willingly.
प्रसादये त्वां बन्धुत्वात् कुरुष्व वचनं मम ।
हितं पथ्यं त्वहं ब्रूमि दीयतामस्य मैथिली ॥२०॥
20. prasādaye tvāṃ bandhutvāt kuruṣva vacanaṃ mama ,
hitaṃ pathyaṃ tvahaṃ brūmi dīyatāmasya maithilī.
20. prasādaye tvām bandhutvāt kuruṣva vacanam mama
hitam pathyam tu aham brūmi dīyatām asya maithilī
20. bandhutvāt tvām prasādaye,
mama vacanam kuruṣva.
tu aham hitam pathyam brūmi.
asya maithilī dīyatām.
20. I entreat you out of kinship; heed my words. Indeed, I speak what is beneficial and wholesome. Let Maithilī be returned to him.
पुरा शरत्सूर्यमरीचिसंनिभान्नवाग्रपुङ्खान् सुदृढान्नृपात्मजः ।
सृजत्यमोघान् विशिखान् वधाय ते प्रदीयतां दाशरथाय मैथिली ॥२१॥
21. purā śaratsūryamarīcisaṃnibhānnavāgrapuṅkhān sudṛḍhānnṛpātmajaḥ ,
sṛjatyamoghān viśikhān vadhāya te pradīyatāṃ dāśarathāya maithilī.
21. purā śaratsūryamarīcisaṃnibhān
navāgrapuṅkhān sudṛḍhān nṛpātmajaḥ
sṛjati amoghān viśikhān vadhāya te
pradīyatām dāśarathāya maithilī

21. Before the prince (Rāma) unleashes his unerring arrows, which are like the rays of the autumn sun, with new and strong feathered shafts, for your destruction, let Maithilī be returned to Daśaratha's son (Rāma).
त्यजस्व कोपं सुखधर्मनाशनं भजस्व धर्मं रतिकीर्तिवर्धनम् ।
प्रसीद जीवेम सपुत्रबान्धवाः प्रदीयतां दाशरथाय मैथिली ॥२२॥
22. tyajasva kopaṃ sukhadharmanāśanaṃ bhajasva dharmaṃ ratikīrtivardhanam ,
prasīda jīvema saputrabāndhavāḥ pradīyatāṃ dāśarathāya maithilī.
22. tyajasva kopam sukha-dharma-nāśanam
bhajasva dharmam rati-kīrti-vardhanam
prasīda jīvema sa-putra-bāndhavāḥ
pradīyatām dāśarathāya maithilī

22. Abandon anger, which destroys happiness and natural law (dharma). Embrace natural law (dharma), which increases pleasure and fame. Be gracious, so that we may live with our sons and relatives. Let Maithilī (Sita) be returned to Dasharatha's son (Rama).
