एवमस्मि तदा मुक्तः कथं चित्तेन संयुगे ।
इदानीमपि यद्वृत्तं तच्छृणुष्व यदुत्तरम् ॥१॥
1. evamasmi tadā muktaḥ kathaṃ cittena saṃyuge ,
idānīmapi yadvṛttaṃ tacchṛṇuṣva yaduttaram.

1. Thus, at that time, I was somehow freed by him in battle. Now, listen also to what happened next.
राक्षसाभ्यामहं द्वाभ्यामनिर्विण्णस्तथा कृतः ।
सहितो मृगरूपाभ्यां प्रविष्टो दण्डकावनम् ॥२॥
2. rākṣasābhyāmahaṃ dvābhyāmanirviṇṇastathā kṛtaḥ ,
sahito mṛgarūpābhyāṃ praviṣṭo daṇḍakāvanam.
2. rākṣasābhyām aham dvābhyām anirviṇṇaḥ tathā kṛtaḥ
sahitaḥ mṛgarūpābhyām praviṣṭaḥ daṇḍakāvanam
2. aham anirviṇṇaḥ tathā dvābhyām rākṣasābhyām kṛtaḥ.

2. Although undaunted, I was thus engaged by the two Rākṣasas. Accompanied by them, in the form of deer, I entered the Daṇḍaka forest.
दीप्तजिह्वो महाकायस्तीक्ष्णशृण्गो महाबलः ।
व्यचरन्दण्डकारण्यं मांसभक्षो महामृगः ॥३॥
3. dīptajihvo mahākāyastīkṣṇaśṛṇgo mahābalaḥ ,
vyacarandaṇḍakāraṇyaṃ māṃsabhakṣo mahāmṛgaḥ.
3. dīptajihvaḥ mahākāyaḥ tīkṣṇaśṛṅgaḥ mahābalaḥ
vyacarat daṇḍakāraṇyam māṃsabhakṣaḥ mahāmṛgaḥ

3. A great beast, with a blazing tongue, a colossal body, sharp horns, and immense strength, wandered through the Daṇḍaka forest, devouring flesh.
अग्निहोत्रेषु तीर्थेषु चैत्यवृक्षेषु रावण ।
अत्यन्तघोरो व्यचरंस्तापसांस्तान्प्रधर्षयन् ॥४॥
4. agnihotreṣu tīrtheṣu caityavṛkṣeṣu rāvaṇa ,
atyantaghoro vyacaraṃstāpasāṃstānpradharṣayan.
4. agnihotreṣu tīrtheṣu caityavṛkṣeṣu rāvaṇa
atyantaghoraḥ vyacaram tāpasān tān pradharṣayan
4. rāvaṇa atyantaghoraḥ aham agnihotreṣu tīrtheṣu
caityavṛkṣeṣu tān tāpasān pradharṣayan vyacaram
4. O Rāvaṇa, I, extremely terrible, wandered through places of Vedic fire rituals (agnihotra), sacred pilgrimage sites (tīrtha), and near sacred trees, assailing those ascetics.
निहत्य दण्डकारण्ये तापसान्धर्मचारिणः ।
रुधिराणि पिबंस्तेषां तथा मांसानि भक्षयन् ॥५॥
5. nihatya daṇḍakāraṇye tāpasāndharmacāriṇaḥ ,
rudhirāṇi pibaṃsteṣāṃ tathā māṃsāni bhakṣayan.
5. nihatya daṇḍakāraṇye tāpasān dharmacāriṇaḥ
rudhirāṇi piban teṣām tathā māṃsāni bhakṣayan
5. daṇḍakāraṇye dharmacāriṇaḥ tāpasān nihatya,
teṣām rudhirāṇi piban tathā māṃsāni bhakṣayan
5. Having killed the ascetics, who followed their intrinsic nature (dharma), in the Daṇḍaka forest, I drank their blood and likewise devoured their flesh.
ऋषिमांसाशनः क्रूरस्त्रासयन् वनगोचरान् ।
तदा रुधिरमत्तो ऽहं व्यचरं दण्डकावनम् ॥६॥
6. ṛṣimāṃsāśanaḥ krūrastrāsayan vanagocarān ,
tadā rudhiramatto'haṃ vyacaraṃ daṇḍakāvanam.
6. ṛṣimāṃsāśanaḥ krūraḥ trāsayant vanagocarān
tadā rudhiramattaḥ aham vyacaram daṇḍakāvanam
6. tadā krūraḥ ṛṣimāṃsāśanaḥ rudhiramattaḥ aham
vanagocarān trāsayant daṇḍakāvanam vyacaram
6. Then, I, a cruel eater of sages' flesh, intoxicated with blood, wandered through the Daṇḍaka forest, terrifying the creatures residing there.
तदाहं दण्डकारण्ये विचरन्धर्मदूषकः ।
आसादयं तदा रामं तापसं धर्ममाश्रितम् ॥७॥
7. tadāhaṃ daṇḍakāraṇye vicarandharmadūṣakaḥ ,
āsādayaṃ tadā rāmaṃ tāpasaṃ dharmamāśritam.
7. tada aham daṇḍakāraṇye vicaran dharmadūṣakaḥ
āsādayam tada rāmam tāpasam dharmam āśritam
7. tada aham dharmadūṣakaḥ daṇḍakāraṇye vicaran
tada dharmam āśritam tāpasam rāmam āsādayam
7. At that time, I, wandering in the Daṇḍaka forest as a transgressor of natural law (dharma), encountered Rama, an ascetic who was devoted to righteousness (dharma).
वैदेहीं च महाभागां लक्ष्मणं च महारथम् ।
तापसं नियताहारं सर्वभूतहिते रतम् ॥८॥
8. vaidehīṃ ca mahābhāgāṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahāratham ,
tāpasaṃ niyatāhāraṃ sarvabhūtahite ratam.
8. vaidehīm ca mahābhāgām lakṣmaṇam ca mahāratham
tāpasam niyatāhāram sarvabhūtahite ratam
8. vaidehīm mahābhāgām ca lakṣmaṇam mahāratham

8. And I also encountered Vaidehi, the highly fortunate lady, and Lakshmana, the great warrior, all of whom were living as ascetics, with restricted diets, and devoted to the welfare of all beings.
सो ऽहं वनगतं रामं परिभूय महाबलम् ।
तापसो ऽयमिति ज्ञात्वा पूर्ववैरमनुस्मरन् ॥९॥
9. so'haṃ vanagataṃ rāmaṃ paribhūya mahābalam ,
tāpaso'yamiti jñātvā pūrvavairamanusmaran.
9. saḥ aham vanagatam rāmam paribhūya mahābalam
tāpasaḥ ayam iti jñātvā pūrvavairam anusmaran
9. saḥ aham pūrvavairam anusmaran mahābalam
vanagatam rāmam ayam tāpasaḥ iti paribhūya jñātvā
9. That I, remembering my old enmity and having contemptuously thought 'this is merely an ascetic' while disregarding the mighty Rama who was living in the forest, (then...)
अभ्यधावं सुसंक्रुद्धस्तीक्ष्णशृङ्गो मृगाकृतिः ।
जिघांसुरकृतप्रज्ञस्तं प्रहारमनुस्मरन् ॥१०॥
10. abhyadhāvaṃ susaṃkruddhastīkṣṇaśṛṅgo mṛgākṛtiḥ ,
jighāṃsurakṛtaprajñastaṃ prahāramanusmaran.
10. abhyadhāvam susaṃkruddhaḥ tīkṣṇaśṛṅgaḥ mṛgākṛtiḥ
jighāṃsuḥ akṛtaprajñaḥ tam prahāram anusmaran
10. susaṃkruddhaḥ tīkṣṇaśṛṅgaḥ mṛgākṛtiḥ jighāṃsuḥ
akṛtaprajñaḥ tam prahāram anusmaran abhyadhāvam
10. That I, recalling that previous blow, became extremely enraged, and in the form of a deer with sharp horns, intending to kill, and with my understanding clouded, I rushed towards him.
तेन मुक्तास्त्रयो बाणाः शिताः शत्रुनिबर्हणाः ।
विकृष्य बलवच्चापं सुपर्णानिलतुल्यगाः ॥११॥
11. tena muktāstrayo bāṇāḥ śitāḥ śatrunibarhaṇāḥ ,
vikṛṣya balavaccāpaṃ suparṇānilatulyagāḥ.
11. tena muktāḥ trayaḥ bāṇāḥ śitāḥ śatrunibarhaṇāḥ
vikṛṣya balavat cāpam suparṇānilatulyagāḥ
11. tena balavat cāpam vikṛṣya śitāḥ śatrunibarhaṇāḥ
suparṇānilatulyagāḥ trayaḥ bāṇāḥ muktāḥ
11. Having forcefully drawn his bow, he released three sharp, enemy-destroying arrows that flew with the speed of Suparṇa (Garuda) and the wind.
ते बाणा वज्रसंकाशाः सुघोरा रक्तभोजनाः ।
आजग्मुः सहिताः सर्वे त्रयः संनतपर्वणः ॥१२॥
12. te bāṇā vajrasaṃkāśāḥ sughorā raktabhojanāḥ ,
ājagmuḥ sahitāḥ sarve trayaḥ saṃnataparvaṇaḥ.
12. te bāṇāḥ vajrasaṃkāśāḥ sughorāḥ raktabhojanāḥ
ājagmuḥ sahitāḥ sarve trayaḥ saṃnataparvaṇaḥ
12. te vajrasaṃkāśāḥ sughorāḥ raktabhojanāḥ
saṃnataparvaṇaḥ trayaḥ bāṇāḥ sarve sahitāḥ ājagmuḥ
12. Those three arrows, which resembled thunderbolts, were exceedingly terrifying, destined to consume blood, and with their joints bent (or poised for flight), they all flew together.
पराक्रमज्ञो रामस्य शठो दृष्टभयः पुरा ।
समुत्क्रान्तस्ततो मुक्तस्ताव् उभौ राक्षसौ हतौ ॥१३॥
13. parākramajño rāmasya śaṭho dṛṣṭabhayaḥ purā ,
samutkrāntastato muktastāv ubhau rākṣasau hatau.
13. parākramajñaḥ rāmasya śaṭhaḥ dṛṣṭabhayaḥ purā
samutkrāntaḥ tataḥ muktaḥ tau ubhau rākṣasau hatau
13. purā rāmasya parākramajñaḥ dṛṣṭabhayaḥ śaṭhaḥ
tataḥ samutkrāntaḥ muktaḥ tau ubhau rākṣasau hatau
13. The rogue (Marīca), who had previously witnessed Rama's prowess and experienced fear, managed to escape from that spot; he was freed (from immediate death, though injured). The other two Rākṣasas, however, were slain.
शरेण मुक्तो रामस्य कथं चित् प्राप्य जीवितम् ।
इह प्रव्राजितो युक्तस्तापसो ऽहं समाहितः ॥१४॥
14. śareṇa mukto rāmasya kathaṃ cit prāpya jīvitam ,
iha pravrājito yuktastāpaso'haṃ samāhitaḥ.
14. śareṇa muktaḥ rāmasya katham cit prāpya jīvitam
iha pravrājitaḥ yuktaḥ tāpasaḥ aham samāhitaḥ
14. rāmasya śareṇa muktaḥ katham cit jīvitam prāpya
aham iha pravrājitaḥ yuktaḥ tāpasaḥ samāhitaḥ
14. Having somehow saved my life after being struck by Rama's arrow, I am now living here as an exiled and disciplined ascetic (tapas), deeply composed.
वृक्षे वृक्षे हि पश्यामि चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरम् ।
गृहीतधनुषं रामं पाशहस्तमिवान्तकम् ॥१५॥
15. vṛkṣe vṛkṣe hi paśyāmi cīrakṛṣṇājināmbaram ,
gṛhītadhanuṣaṃ rāmaṃ pāśahastamivāntakam.
15. vṛkṣe vṛkṣe hi paśyāmi cīrakṛṣṇājināmbaram
gṛhītadhanuṣam rāmam pāśahastam iva antakam
15. hi vṛkṣe vṛkṣe cīrakṛṣṇājināmbaram gṛhītadhanuṣam
pāśahastam iva antakam rāmam paśyāmi
15. Indeed, in every single tree, I see Rama, clad in bark and black deer skin, holding a bow, like Death (Antaka) holding a noose in his hand.
अपि रामसहस्राणि भीतः पश्यामि रावण ।
रामभूतमिदं सर्वमरण्यं प्रतिभाति मे ॥१६॥
16. api rāmasahasrāṇi bhītaḥ paśyāmi rāvaṇa ,
rāmabhūtamidaṃ sarvamaraṇyaṃ pratibhāti me.
16. api rāmasahasrāṇi bhītaḥ paśyāmi rāvaṇa
rāmabhūtam idam sarvam araṇyam pratibhāti me
16. rāvaṇa api bhītaḥ rāmasahasrāṇi paśyāmi idam
sarvam araṇyam rāmabhūtam me pratibhāti
16. O Rāvaṇa, in my fear, I see thousands of Rāmas. This entire forest appears to me to be Rama (Rāma)-permeated.
राममेव हि पश्यामि रहिते राक्षसेश्वर ।
दृष्ट्वा स्वप्नगतं राममुद्भ्रमामि विचेतनः ॥१७॥
17. rāmameva hi paśyāmi rahite rākṣaseśvara ,
dṛṣṭvā svapnagataṃ rāmamudbhramāmi vicetanaḥ.
17. rāmam eva hi paśyāmi rahite rākṣaseśvara
dṛṣṭvā svapnagatam rāmam udbhramāmi vicetanaḥ
17. rākṣaseśvara hi rahite rāmam eva paśyāmi
svapnagatam rāmam dṛṣṭvā vicetanaḥ udbhramāmi
17. Indeed, O lord of Rākṣasas, in solitude I see Rama alone. Having seen Rama in a dream, I become utterly bewildered and lose my senses.
रकारादीनि नामानि रामत्रस्तस्य रावण ।
रत्नानि च रथाश्चैव त्रासं संजनयन्ति मे ॥१८॥
18. rakārādīni nāmāni rāmatrastasya rāvaṇa ,
ratnāni ca rathāścaiva trāsaṃ saṃjanayanti me.
18. rakārādīni nāmāni rāmatrastasya rāvaṇa ratnāni
ca rathāḥ ca eva trāsam saṃjanayanti me
18. rāvaṇa rāmatrastasya me rakārādīni nāmāni ca
ratnāni ca eva rathāḥ trāsam saṃjanayanti
18. O Rāvaṇa, for me, who am terrified of Rama (Rāma), even names beginning with the letter 'ra', as well as jewels (ratna) and chariots (ratha), generate terror.
अहं तस्य प्रभावज्ञो न युद्धं तेन ते क्षमम् ।
रणे रामेण युध्यस्व क्षमां वा कुरु राक्षस ।
न ते रामकथा कार्या यदि मां द्रष्टुमिच्छसि ॥१९॥
19. ahaṃ tasya prabhāvajño na yuddhaṃ tena te kṣamam ,
raṇe rāmeṇa yudhyasva kṣamāṃ vā kuru rākṣasa ,
na te rāmakathā kāryā yadi māṃ draṣṭumicchasi.
19. aham tasya prabhāvajñaḥ na yuddham
tena te kṣamam raṇe rāmeṇa yudhyasva
kṣamām vā kuru rākṣasa na te
rāmakathā kāryā yadi mām draṣṭum icchasi
19. aham tasya prabhāvajñaḥ tena te
yuddham na kṣamam rākṣasa rāmeṇa raṇe
yudhyasva vā kṣamām kuru yadi mām
draṣṭum icchasi te rāmakathā na kāryā
19. I know his power, and a war with him is not fitting for you. O Rākṣasa, either fight Rāma in battle, or seek his forgiveness. If you wish to see me (alive), you should not even speak of Rāma.
इदं वचो बन्धुहितार्थिना मया यथोच्यमानं यदि नाभिपत्स्यसे ।
सबान्धवस्त्यक्ष्यसि जीवितं रणे हतो ऽद्य रामेण शरैरजिह्मगैः ॥२०॥
20. idaṃ vaco bandhuhitārthinā mayā yathocyamānaṃ yadi nābhipatsyase ,
sabāndhavastyakṣyasi jīvitaṃ raṇe hato'dya rāmeṇa śarairajihmagaiḥ.
20. idam vacaḥ bandhuhitārthinā mayā
yathā ucyamānam yadi na abhipatsyase
sabāndhavaḥ tyakṣyasi jīvitam raṇe
hataḥ adya rāmeṇa śaraiḥ ajihmagaiḥ
20. yadi bandhuhitārthinā mayā yathā
ucyamānam idam vacaḥ na abhipatsyase
sabāndhavaḥ jīvitam tyakṣyasi raṇe
adya rāmeṇa ajihmagaiḥ śaraiḥ hataḥ
20. If you do not accept this advice, spoken by me who desires the welfare of your relatives, then you and your kinsmen will abandon your lives today in battle, slain by Rāma with his unerring arrows.
