अब्रवीत् परुषं वाक्यं मारीचो राक्षसाधिपम् ॥१॥
1. ājñapto rājavadvākyaṃ pratikūlaṃ niśācaraḥ ,

1. Maricha, the night-ranger, when commanded with a king-like speech that was adverse, then spoke harsh words to the lord of rakshasas (Ravana).
केनायमुपदिष्टस्ते विनाशः पापकर्मणा ।
सपुत्रस्य सराष्ट्रस्य सामात्यस्य निशाचर ॥२॥
2. kenāyamupadiṣṭaste vināśaḥ pāpakarmaṇā ,
saputrasya sarāṣṭrasya sāmātyasya niśācara.

2. O night-wanderer, by what evil-doer was this ruin, which involves you, your son, your kingdom, and your ministers, advised to you?
कस्त्वया सुखिना राजन्नाभिनन्दति पापकृत् ।
केनेदमुपदिष्टं ते मृत्युद्वारमुपायतः ॥३॥
3. kastvayā sukhinā rājannābhinandati pāpakṛt ,
kenedamupadiṣṭaṃ te mṛtyudvāramupāyataḥ.
3. kaḥ tvayā sukhinā rājan na abhinandati pāpakṛt
kena idam upadiṣṭam te mṛtyudvāram upayātaḥ
3. rājan tvayā sukhinā kaḥ pāpakṛt na abhinandati

3. O King, what evil-doer (who is your enemy) would rejoice with you in your happiness? By whom was this gateway to death advised to you as a strategy?
शत्रवस्तव सुव्यक्तं हीनवीर्या निशाचर ।
इच्छन्ति त्वां विनश्यन्तमुपरुद्धं बलीयसा ॥४॥
4. śatravastava suvyaktaṃ hīnavīryā niśācara ,
icchanti tvāṃ vinaśyantamuparuddhaṃ balīyasā.
4. śatravaḥ tava suvyaktam hīnavīryā niśācara
icchanti tvām vinaśyantam uparuddham balīyasā
4. niśācara suvyaktam tava hīnavīryāḥ śatravaḥ

4. O night-wanderer, it is very clear that your weakened enemies desire your destruction, wishing you to be overwhelmed by a stronger opponent.
केनेदमुपदिष्टं ते क्षुद्रेणाहितवादिना ।
यस्त्वामिच्छति नश्यन्तं स्वकृतेन निशाचर ॥५॥
5. kenedamupadiṣṭaṃ te kṣudreṇāhitavādinā ,
yastvāmicchati naśyantaṃ svakṛtena niśācara.
5. kena idam upadiṣṭam te kṣudreṇa ahitavādinā
yaḥ tvām icchati naśyantam svakṛtena niśācara
5. niśācara svakṛtena naśyantam tvām yaḥ icchati,
tena kṣudreṇa ahitavādinā idam te kena upadiṣṭam
5. O night-wanderer, by what vile and malevolent advisor, who desires your destruction through your own actions, was this advised to you?
वध्याः खलु न हन्यन्ते सचिवास्तव रावण ।
ये त्वामुत्पथमारूढं न निगृह्णन्ति सर्वशः ॥६॥
6. vadhyāḥ khalu na hanyante sacivāstava rāvaṇa ,
ye tvāmutpathamārūḍhaṃ na nigṛhṇanti sarvaśaḥ.
6. vadhyāḥ khalu na hanyante sacivāḥ tava rāvaṇa
ye tvām utpatham ārūḍham na nigṛhṇanti sarvaśaḥ
6. rāvaṇa tava sacivāḥ ye tvām utpatham ārūḍham
sarvaśaḥ na nigṛhṇanti khalu vadhyāḥ na hanyante
6. O Rāvaṇa, your ministers, who completely fail to restrain you when you have embarked on a wrong path, are indeed not being killed, even though they deserve death.
अमात्यैः कामवृत्तो हि राजा कापथमाश्रितः ।
निग्राह्यः सर्वथा सद्भिर्न निग्राह्यो निगृह्यसे ॥७॥
7. amātyaiḥ kāmavṛtto hi rājā kāpathamāśritaḥ ,
nigrāhyaḥ sarvathā sadbhirna nigrāhyo nigṛhyase.
7. amātyaiḥ kāmavṛttaḥ hi rājā kāpatham āśritaḥ
nigrāhyaḥ sarvathā sadbhiḥ na nigrāhyaḥ nigṛhyase
7. hi kāmavṛttaḥ kāpatham āśritaḥ rājā sadbhiḥ amātyaiḥ sarvathā nigrāhyaḥ.
(tvam) nigṛhyase,
(kintu) na nigrāhyaḥ (asi).
7. Indeed, a king who is self-willed and has resorted to a wrong path must be restrained in every way by good ministers. Yet, you are being restrained (by external forces), even though you are not one who should be so restrained (by others).
धर्ममर्थं च कामं च यशश्च जयतां वर ।
स्वामिप्रसादात् सचिवाः प्राप्नुवन्ति निशाचर ॥८॥
8. dharmamarthaṃ ca kāmaṃ ca yaśaśca jayatāṃ vara ,
svāmiprasādāt sacivāḥ prāpnuvanti niśācara.
8. dharmam artham ca kāmam ca yaśaḥ ca jayatām
vara svāmiprasādāt sacivāḥ prāpnuvanti niśācara
8. jayatām vara niśācara sacivāḥ svāmiprasādāt dharmam ca artham ca kāmam ca yaśaḥ ca prāpnuvanti.
8. O best among conquerors, O night-wanderer (Rāvaṇa), ministers attain natural law (dharma), material prosperity, gratification, and fame through the favor of their master.
विपर्यये तु तत् सर्वं व्यर्थं भवति रावण ।
व्यसनं स्वामिवैगुण्यात् प्राप्नुवन्तीतरे जनाः ॥९॥
9. viparyaye tu tat sarvaṃ vyarthaṃ bhavati rāvaṇa ,
vyasanaṃ svāmivaiguṇyāt prāpnuvantītare janāḥ.
9. viparyaye tu tat sarvam vyartham bhavati rāvaṇa
vyasanam svāmivaiguṇyāt prāpnuvanti itare janāḥ
9. rāvaṇa tu viparyaye tat sarvam vyartham bhavati.
itare janāḥ svāmivaiguṇyāt vyasanam prāpnuvanti.
9. O Rāvaṇa, however, in the opposite situation, all that (righteousness, prosperity, gratification, and fame) becomes futile. Then, other people (the dependents or subjects) incur misfortune due to the master's deficiencies.
राजमूलो हि धर्मश्च जयश्च जयतां वर ।
तस्मात् सर्वास्ववस्थासु रक्षितव्यो नराधिपः ॥१०॥
10. rājamūlo hi dharmaśca jayaśca jayatāṃ vara ,
tasmāt sarvāsvavasthāsu rakṣitavyo narādhipaḥ.
10. rājamūlaḥ hi dharmaḥ ca jayaḥ ca jayatām vara
tasmāt sarvāsu avasthāsu rakṣitavyaḥ narādhipaḥ
10. jayatām vara hi dharmaḥ ca jayaḥ ca rājamūlaḥ
tasmāt sarvāsu avasthāsu narādhipaḥ rakṣitavyaḥ
10. O best among victors, indeed, both the natural law (dharma) and victory originate from the king. Therefore, in all circumstances, the king should be protected.
राज्यं पालयितुं शक्यं न तीक्ष्णेन निशाचर ।
न चापि प्रतिकूलेन नाविनीतेन राक्षस ॥११॥
11. rājyaṃ pālayituṃ śakyaṃ na tīkṣṇena niśācara ,
na cāpi pratikūlena nāvinītena rākṣasa.
11. rājyam pālayitum śakyam na tīkṣṇena niśācara
na ca api pratikūlena na avinītena rākṣasa
11. niśācara rājyam tīkṣṇena na pālayitum śakyam
ca api rākṣasa pratikūlena na avinītena na
11. O night-stalker, a kingdom cannot be ruled by a cruel person, nor, O Rākṣasa, by one who is hostile or undisciplined.
ये तीक्ष्णमन्त्राः सचिवा भज्यन्ते सह तेन वै ।
विषमेषु रथाः शीघ्रं मन्दसारथयो यथा ॥१२॥
12. ye tīkṣṇamantrāḥ sacivā bhajyante saha tena vai ,
viṣameṣu rathāḥ śīghraṃ mandasārathayo yathā.
12. ye tīkṣṇamantrāḥ sacivāḥ bhajyante saha tena vai
viṣameṣu rathāḥ śīghram mandasārathayaḥ yathā
12. yathā mandasārathayaḥ rathāḥ viṣameṣu śīghram bhajyante
vai ye tīkṣṇamantrāḥ sacivāḥ tena saha bhajyante
12. Just as chariots with incompetent charioteers quickly break down on rough terrain, similarly, ministers who offer cruel counsel are ruined along with the king they advise.
बहवः साधवो लोके युक्तधर्ममनुष्ठिताः ।
परेषामपराधेन विनष्टाः सपरिच्छदाः ॥१३॥
13. bahavaḥ sādhavo loke yuktadharmamanuṣṭhitāḥ ,
pareṣāmaparādhena vinaṣṭāḥ saparicchadāḥ.
13. bahavaḥ sādhavaḥ loke yuktam dharmam anuṣṭhitāḥ
pareṣām aparādhena vinaṣṭāḥ saparicchadāḥ
13. loke bahavaḥ sādhavaḥ yuktam dharmam anuṣṭhitāḥ
pareṣām aparādhena saparicchadāḥ vinaṣṭāḥ
13. In this world, many virtuous individuals, who diligently follow the proper natural law (dharma), have perished along with their families, due to the transgressions of others.
स्वामिना प्रतिकूलेन प्रजास्तीक्ष्णेन रावण ।
रक्ष्यमाणा न वर्धन्ते मेषा गोमायुना यथा ॥१४॥
14. svāminā pratikūlena prajāstīkṣṇena rāvaṇa ,
rakṣyamāṇā na vardhante meṣā gomāyunā yathā.
14. svāminā pratikūlena prajāḥ tīkṣṇena rāvaṇa |
rakṣyamāṇāḥ na vardhante meṣāḥ gomāyunā yathā
14. rāvaṇa pratikūlena tīkṣṇena svāminā rakṣyamāṇāḥ
prajāḥ na vardhante yathā gomāyunā meṣāḥ
14. O Rāvaṇa, subjects who are protected by a hostile and cruel ruler do not prosper, just as sheep do not thrive when guarded by a jackal.
अवश्यं विनशिष्यन्ति सर्वे रावण राक्षसाः ।
येषां त्वं कर्कशो राजा दुर्बुद्धिरजितेन्द्रियः ॥१५॥
15. avaśyaṃ vinaśiṣyanti sarve rāvaṇa rākṣasāḥ ,
yeṣāṃ tvaṃ karkaśo rājā durbuddhirajitendriyaḥ.
15. avaśyam vinaśiṣyanti sarve rāvaṇa rākṣasāḥ |
yeṣām tvam karkaśaḥ rājā durbuddhiḥ ajitendriyaḥ
15. rāvaṇa sarve rākṣasāḥ avaśyam vinaśiṣyanti
yeṣām tvam karkaśaḥ rājā durbuddhiḥ ajitendriyaḥ
15. O Rāvaṇa, all the rākṣasas will certainly perish, because you are their king - harsh, foolish, and unrestrained in your senses.
तदिदं काकतालीयं घोरमासादितं त्वया ।
अत्र किं शोभनं यत्त्वं ससैन्यो विनशिष्यसि ॥१६॥
16. tadidaṃ kākatālīyaṃ ghoramāsāditaṃ tvayā ,
atra kiṃ śobhanaṃ yattvaṃ sasainyo vinaśiṣyasi.
16. tat idam kākatālīyam ghoram āsāditam tvayā |
atra kim śobhanam yat tvam sasainyaḥ vinaśiṣyasi
16. tvayā idam tat ghoram kākatālīyam āsāditam atra
kim śobhanam yat tvam sasainyaḥ vinaśiṣyasi
16. You have encountered this terrible, sudden misfortune. What is good in this situation, that you, along with your army, will perish?
मां निहत्य तु रामो ऽसौ नचिरात्त्वां वधिष्यति ।
अनेन कृतकृत्यो ऽस्मि म्रिये यदरिणा हतः ॥१७॥
17. māṃ nihatya tu rāmo'sau nacirāttvāṃ vadhiṣyati ,
anena kṛtakṛtyo'smi mriye yadariṇā hataḥ.
17. mām nihatya tu rāmaḥ asau nacirāt tvām vadhiṣyati
| anena kṛtakṛtyaḥ asmi mriye yat ariṇā hataḥ
17. asau rāmaḥ tu mām nihatya nacirāt tvām vadhiṣyati anena yat ariṇā hataḥ mriye,
kṛtakṛtyaḥ asmi
17. Having slain me, that Rāma will surely kill you soon. By this act, I consider my purpose fulfilled, that I die killed by an enemy.
दर्शनादेव रामस्य हतं मामुपधारय ।
आत्मानं च हतं विद्धि हृत्वा सीतां सबान्धवम् ॥१८॥
18. darśanādeva rāmasya hataṃ māmupadhāraya ,
ātmānaṃ ca hataṃ viddhi hṛtvā sītāṃ sabāndhavam.
18. darśanāt eva rāmasya hatam mām upadhāraya |
ātmānam ca hatam viddhi hṛtvā sītām sabāndhavam
18. rāmasya darśanāt eva mām hatam upadhāraya
sītām hṛtvā ca sabāndhavam ātmānam hatam viddhi
18. Understand that I am as good as dead by the mere sight of Rama. And know that you, along with your kinsmen, are as good as dead for having abducted Sita.
आनयिष्यसि चेत् सीतामाश्रमात् सहितो मया ।
नैव त्वमसि नैवाहं नैव लङ्का न राक्षसाः ॥१९॥
19. ānayiṣyasi cet sītāmāśramāt sahito mayā ,
naiva tvamasi naivāhaṃ naiva laṅkā na rākṣasāḥ.
19. ānayiṣyasi cet sītām āśramāt sahitaḥ mayā | na
eva tvam asi na eva aham na eva laṅkā na rākṣasāḥ
19. cet mayā sahitaḥ sītām āśramāt ānayiṣyasi tvam
na eva asi aham na eva laṅkā na eva na rākṣasāḥ
19. If you (Ravana) bring Sita back from the hermitage (āśrama) with my help, then neither you, nor I, nor Lanka, nor the demons (rakṣasas) will exist.
निवार्यमाणस्तु मया हितैषिणा न मृष्यसे वाक्यमिदं निशाचर ।
परेतकल्पा हि गतायुषो नरा हितं न गृह्णन्ति सुहृद्भिरीरितम् ॥२०॥
20. nivāryamāṇastu mayā hitaiṣiṇā na mṛṣyase vākyamidaṃ niśācara ,
paretakalpā hi gatāyuṣo narā hitaṃ na gṛhṇanti suhṛdbhirīritam.
20. nivāryamāṇaḥ tu mayā hitaiṣiṇā na
mṛṣyase vākyam idam niśācara |
paretakalpāḥ hi gatāyuṣaḥ narāḥ
hitam na gṛhṇanti suhṛdbhiḥ īritam
20. niśācara,
mayā hitaiṣiṇā nivāryamāṇaḥ tu idam vākyam na mṛṣyase hi,
gatāyuṣaḥ paretakalpāḥ narāḥ suhṛdbhiḥ īritam hitam na gṛhṇanti
20. O night-wanderer, though you are being restrained by me, your well-wisher, you do not heed this advice. Indeed, people whose lives are effectively over, who are as good as dead, do not accept beneficial counsel given by their friends.
