सा राक्षसेन्द्रस्य वचो निशम्य तद् रावणस्याप्रियमप्रियार्ता ।
सीता वितत्रास यथा वनान्ते सिंहाभिपन्ना गजराजकन्या ॥१॥
1. sā rākṣasendrasya vaco niśamya tad rāvaṇasyāpriyamapriyārtā ,

1. She, Sītā, distressed by the unpleasant words, having heard that disagreeable speech of Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, trembled, just like a young elephant in the forest, attacked by a lion.
सा राक्षसी मध्यगता च भीरुर्वाग्भिर्भृशं रावणतर्जिता च ।
कान्तारमध्ये विजने विसृष्टा बालेव कन्या विललाप सीता ॥२॥
2. sā rākṣasī madhyagatā ca bhīrurvāgbhirbhṛśaṃ rāvaṇatarjitā ca ,
kāntāramadhye vijane visṛṣṭā bāleva kanyā vilalāpa sītā.

vāgbhiḥ bhṛśam rāvaṇa-tarjitā

2. Sītā, fearful and surrounded by Rākṣasīs, greatly threatened by Rāvaṇa with his words, and abandoned in a solitary place in the midst of a forest, lamented like a young girl.
सत्यं बतेदं प्रवदन्ति लोके नाकालमृत्युर्भवतीति सन्तः ।
यत्राहमेवं परिभर्त्स्यमाना जीवामि किं चित् क्षणमप्यपुण्या ॥३॥
3. satyaṃ batedaṃ pravadanti loke nākālamṛtyurbhavatīti santaḥ ,
yatrāhamevaṃ paribhartsyamānā jīvāmi kiṃ cit kṣaṇamapyapuṇyā.
3. satyam bata idam pravadanti loke
na akālamṛtyuḥ bhavati iti santaḥ
| yatra aham evam paribhartsyamānā
jīvāmi kiñcit kṣaṇam api apuṇyā
3. loke santaḥ idaṃ satyam pravadanti

apuṇyā kiñcit kṣaṇam api jīvāmi
3. Truly, the wise in this world declare, 'There is no untimely death.' Yet, here I am, being thus greatly tormented, still living even for a moment, an unfortunate woman.
सुखाद्विहीनं बहुदुःखपूर्णमिदं तु नूनं हृदयं स्थिरं मे ।
विदीर्यते यन्न सहस्रधाद्य वज्राहतं शृङ्गमिवाचलस्य ॥४॥
4. sukhādvihīnaṃ bahuduḥkhapūrṇamidaṃ tu nūnaṃ hṛdayaṃ sthiraṃ me ,
vidīryate yanna sahasradhādya vajrāhataṃ śṛṅgamivācalasya.
4. sukhāt vihīnam bahuduḥkhapūrṇam
idam tu nūnam hṛdayam sthiram me |
vidīryate yat na sahasradhā adya
vajra āhatam śṛṅgam iva acalasya
4. sukhāt vihīnam bahuduḥkhapūrṇam
idam me hṛdayam tu nūnam sthiram
yat adya vajra āhatam acalasya
śṛṅgam iva sahasradhā na vidīryate
4. Indeed, this heart of mine, devoid of joy and full of much sorrow, is certainly firm. Why does it not burst into a thousand pieces today, like the peak of a mountain struck by a thunderbolt?
नैवास्ति नूनं मम दोषमत्र वध्याहमस्याप्रियदर्शनस्य ।
भावं न चास्याहमनुप्रदातुमलं द्विजो मन्त्रमिवाद्विजाय ॥५॥
5. naivāsti nūnaṃ mama doṣamatra vadhyāhamasyāpriyadarśanasya ,
bhāvaṃ na cāsyāhamanupradātumalaṃ dvijo mantramivādvijāya.
5. na eva asti nūnam mama doṣam atra
vadhyā aham asyāḥ apriyadarśanasya
| bhāvam na ca asyāḥ aham anupradātum
alam dvijaḥ mantram iva advijāya
5. atra mama doṣam na eva asti nūnam
aham asyāḥ apriyadarśanasya vadhyā
ca aham asyāḥ bhāvam anupradātum
alam na dvijaḥ advijāya mantram iva
5. Certainly, there is no fault (doṣa) of mine here; I am destined to be killed by this one of hateful appearance. And I am unable to offer him my affection, just as a twice-born (dvija) cannot impart a sacred verse (mantra) to one who is not twice-born (advija).
नूनं ममाङ्गान्यचिरादनार्यः शस्त्रैः शितैश्छेत्स्यति राक्षसेन्द्रः ।
तस्मिन्ननागच्छति लोकनाथे गर्भस्थजन्तोरिव शल्यकृन्तः ॥६॥
6. nūnaṃ mamāṅgānyacirādanāryaḥ śastraiḥ śitaiśchetsyati rākṣasendraḥ ,
tasminnanāgacchati lokanāthe garbhasthajantoriva śalyakṛntaḥ.
6. nūnam mama aṅgāni acirāt anāryaḥ
śastraiḥ śitaiḥ chetsyati rākṣasa-indraḥ
| tasmin anāgacchati lokanāthe
garbhastha-jantoḥ iva śalya-kṛntaḥ
6. nūnam anāryaḥ rākṣasendraḥ acirāt
śitaiḥ śastraiḥ mama aṅgāni
chetsyati tasmin lokanāthe anāgacchati
garbhastha-jantoḥ śalyakṛntaḥ iva
6. Certainly, this ignoble king of rākṣasas will soon cut my limbs with sharp weapons. While that lord of the world does not arrive, my situation is like that of a creature in the womb facing a surgeon.
दुःखं बतेदं मम दुःखिताया मासौ चिरायाभिगमिष्यतो द्वौ ।
बद्धस्य वध्यस्य यथा निशान्ते राजापराधादिव तस्करस्य ॥७॥
7. duḥkhaṃ batedaṃ mama duḥkhitāyā māsau cirāyābhigamiṣyato dvau ,
baddhasya vadhyasya yathā niśānte rājāparādhādiva taskarasya.
7. duḥkham bata idam mama duḥkhitāyāḥ
māsau cirāya abhigamiṣyataḥ
dvau | baddhasya vadhyasya yathā
niśānte rājāparādhāt iva taskarasya
7. Alas, for me, who is so sorrowful, these two months will pass very slowly. It is like a thief, bound and condemned to execution, awaiting the dawn after having committed a royal offense.
हा राम हा लक्ष्मण हा सुमित्रे हा राम मातः सह मे जनन्या ।
एषा विपद्याम्यहमल्पभाग्या महार्णवे नौरिव मूढ वाता ॥८॥
8. hā rāma hā lakṣmaṇa hā sumitre hā rāma mātaḥ saha me jananyā ,
eṣā vipadyāmyahamalpabhāgyā mahārṇave nauriva mūḍha vātā.
8. hā rāma hā lakṣmaṇa hā sumitre
hā rāma mātaḥ saha me jananyā
| eṣā vipadyāmi aham alpabhāgyā
mahārṇave nauḥ iva mūḍhavātā
8. Oh Rāma! Oh Lakṣmaṇa! Oh Sumitrā! Oh mother of Rāma! And along with my own mother! I, this extremely unfortunate one, am perishing, just like a boat in a great ocean caught by confused winds.
तरस्विनौ धारयता मृगस्य सत्त्वेन रूपं मनुजेन्द्रपुत्रौ ।
नूनं विशस्तौ मम कारणात्तौ सिंहर्षभौ द्वाविव वैद्युतेन ॥९॥
9. tarasvinau dhārayatā mṛgasya sattvena rūpaṃ manujendraputrau ,
nūnaṃ viśastau mama kāraṇāttau siṃharṣabhau dvāviva vaidyutena.
9. tarasvinau dhārayatā mṛgasya
sattvena rūpam manujendraputrau |
nūnam viśastau mama kāraṇāt tau
siṃharṣabhau dvau iva vaidyutena
9. The two mighty sons of the lord of men (princes), having assumed the form of a deer by their essential nature, have surely been slain on my account, like two lion-like bulls struck by lightning.
नूनं स कालो मृगरूपधारी मामल्पभाग्यां लुलुभे तदानीम् ।
यत्रार्यपुत्रं विससर्ज मूढा रामानुजं लक्ष्मणपूर्वकं च ॥१०॥
10. nūnaṃ sa kālo mṛgarūpadhārī māmalpabhāgyāṃ lulubhe tadānīm ,
yatrāryaputraṃ visasarja mūḍhā rāmānujaṃ lakṣmaṇapūrvakaṃ ca.
10. nūnam sa kālaḥ mṛgarūpadhārī mām
alpabhāgyām lulubhe tadānīm |
yatra āryaputram visasarja mūḍhā
rāmānujam lakṣmaṇapūrvakam ca
10. Surely that Time (kāla), assuming the form of a deer, deluded me, the unfortunate one, at that moment. As a result, I foolishly sent forth the noble prince (Rāma), and Rāma's younger brother, Lakṣmaṇa.
हा राम सत्यव्रत दीर्घवाहो हा पूर्णचन्द्रप्रतिमानवक्त्र ।
हा जीवलोकस्य हितः प्रियश्च वध्यां न मां वेत्सि हि राक्षसानाम् ॥११॥
11. hā rāma satyavrata dīrghavāho hā pūrṇacandrapratimānavaktra ,
hā jīvalokasya hitaḥ priyaśca vadhyāṃ na māṃ vetsi hi rākṣasānām.
11. hā rāma satyavrata dīrghabāho hā
pūrṇacandrapratimānavaktra hā
jīvalokasya hitaḥ priyaḥ ca
vadhyām na mām vetsi hi rākṣasānām
11. Oh Rāma, you who uphold true vows, you of mighty arms, whose face is like the full moon! Oh, you who are beneficial and dear to all living beings! Truly, you do not realize that I am destined to be killed by these rākṣasas.
अनन्यदेवत्वमियं क्षमा च भूमौ च शय्या नियमश्च धर्मे ।
पतिव्रतात्वं विफलं ममेदं कृतं कृतघ्नेष्विव मानुषाणाम् ॥१२॥
12. ananyadevatvamiyaṃ kṣamā ca bhūmau ca śayyā niyamaśca dharme ,
pativratātvaṃ viphalaṃ mamedaṃ kṛtaṃ kṛtaghneṣviva mānuṣāṇām.
12. anananyadevatvam iyam kṣamā ca
bhūmau ca śayyā niyamaḥ ca dharme
pativratātvam viphalām mama idam
kṛtam kṛtaghneṣu iva mānuṣāṇām
12. This exclusive devotion to a single deity (ananyadevatvam), this forbearance, sleeping on the ground, and my strict adherence to natural law (dharma) - this wifely devotion of mine has become fruitless, like good deeds performed among ungrateful people.
मोघो हि धर्मश्चरितो ममायं तथैकपत्नीत्वमिदं निरर्थम् ।
या त्वां न पश्यामि कृशा विवर्णा हीना त्वया संगमने निराशा ॥१३॥
13. mogho hi dharmaścarito mamāyaṃ tathaikapatnītvamidaṃ nirartham ,
yā tvāṃ na paśyāmi kṛśā vivarṇā hīnā tvayā saṃgamane nirāśā.
13. moghaḥ hi dharmaḥ caritaḥ mama
ayam tathā ekapatnītvam idam
nirartham yā tvām na paśyāmi kṛśā
vivarṇā hīnā tvayā saṃgamane nirāśā
13. Indeed, this path of natural law (dharma) that I have observed has become futile, and likewise, this state of being a devoted wife (ekapatnītva) has become meaningless. For I do not see you; I am emaciated, discolored, bereft of you, and despairing of our reunion.
पितुर्निर्देशं नियमेन कृत्वा वनान्निवृत्तश्चरितव्रतश्च ।
स्त्रीभिस्तु मन्ये विपुलेक्षणाभिः संरंस्यसे वीतभयः कृतार्थः ॥१४॥
14. piturnirdeśaṃ niyamena kṛtvā vanānnivṛttaścaritavrataśca ,
strībhistu manye vipulekṣaṇābhiḥ saṃraṃsyase vītabhayaḥ kṛtārthaḥ.
14. pituḥ nirdeśam niyamena kṛtvā
vanāt nivṛttaḥ caritavrataḥ ca
strībhiḥ tu manye vipulekṣaṇābhiḥ
saṃraṃsyase vītabhayaḥ kṛtārthaḥ
14. Having strictly carried out your father's command and returned from the forest, having fulfilled your vow, I believe you will then rejoice with beautiful, wide-eyed women, free from fear and having achieved your life's purpose.
अहं तु राम त्वयि जातकामा चिरं विनाशाय निबद्धभावा ।
मोघं चरित्वाथ तपोव्रतं च त्यक्ष्यामि धिग्जीवितमल्पभाग्या ॥१५॥
15. ahaṃ tu rāma tvayi jātakāmā ciraṃ vināśāya nibaddhabhāvā ,
moghaṃ caritvātha tapovrataṃ ca tyakṣyāmi dhigjīvitamalpabhāgyā.
15. aham tu rāma tvayi jātakāmā ciram
vināśāya nibaddhabhāvā mogham
caritvā atha tapovratam ca
tyakṣyāmi dhik jīvitam alpabhāgyā
15. rāma aham tu tvayi jātakāmā
nibaddhabhāvā vināśāya ciram atha
mogham tapovratam ca caritvā
jīvitam dhik alpabhāgyā tyakṣyāmi
15. O Rāma, I, who have developed an intense longing for you and have long been resolved to bring about my own end, will now give up this life, having fruitlessly observed vows and undertaken austerities. Woe to my miserable life, for I am so unfortunate!
सा जीवितं क्षिप्रमहं त्यजेयं विषेण शस्त्रेण शितेन वापि ।
विषस्य दाता न तु मे ऽस्ति कश्चिच्छस्त्रस्य वा वेश्मनि राक्षसस्य ॥१६॥
16. sā jīvitaṃ kṣipramahaṃ tyajeyaṃ viṣeṇa śastreṇa śitena vāpi ,
viṣasya dātā na tu me'sti kaścicchastrasya vā veśmani rākṣasasya.
16. sā jīvitam kṣipram aham tyajeyam
viṣeṇa śastreṇa śitena vā api
viṣasya dātā na tu me asti kaścit
śastrasya vā veśmani rākṣasasya
16. sā aham kṣipram jīvitam viṣeṇa
śitena śastreṇa vāpi tyajeyam tu
me rākṣasasya veśmani viṣasya
vā śastrasya kaścit dātā na asti
16. I would quickly give up my life, either by poison or by a sharp weapon. But in this demon's (rākṣasa) abode, there is no one to give me poison or a weapon.
शोकाभितप्ता बहुधा विचिन्त्य सीताथ वेण्युद्ग्रथनं गृहीत्वा ।
उद्बध्य वेण्युद्ग्रथनेन शीघ्रमहं गमिष्यामि यमस्य मूलम् ॥१७॥
17. śokābhitaptā bahudhā vicintya sītātha veṇyudgrathanaṃ gṛhītvā ,
udbadhya veṇyudgrathanena śīghramahaṃ gamiṣyāmi yamasya mūlam.
17. śokābhitaptā bahudhā vicintya
sītā atha veṇyudgrathanam gṛhītvā
udbadhya veṇyudgrathanena
śīghram aham gamiṣyāmi yamasya mūlam
17. śokābhitaptā sītā bahudhā vicintya
atha veṇyudgrathanam gṛhītvā
veṇyudgrathanena udbadhya aham
śīghram yamasya mūlam gamiṣyāmi
17. Tormented by grief, Sītā, having reflected in many ways, then took hold of her braided hair. Quickly, I will tie myself with my braid and go to the abode of Yama.
इतीव सीता बहुधा विलप्य सर्वात्मना राममनुस्मरन्ती ।
प्रवेपमाना परिशुष्कवक्त्रा नगोत्तमं पुष्पितमाससाद ॥१८॥
18. itīva sītā bahudhā vilapya sarvātmanā rāmamanusmarantī ,
pravepamānā pariśuṣkavaktrā nagottamaṃ puṣpitamāsasāda.
18. iti iva sītā bahudhā vilapya sarvātmanā rāmam anusmarantī
pravepamānā pariśuṣkavaktrā nagottamam puṣpitam āsasāda
18. iti iva sītā bahudhā vilapya sarvātmanā rāmam anusmarantī
pravepamānā pariśuṣkavaktrā puṣpitam nagottamam āsasāda
18. Thus, Sītā, having lamented extensively, and remembering Rāma with her entire being (ātman), trembling and with a very dry face, approached an excellent blossoming tree.
उपस्थिता सा मृदुर् सर्वगात्री शाखां गृहीत्वाथ नगस्य तस्य ।
तस्यास्तु रामं प्रविचिन्तयन्त्या रामानुजं स्वं च कुलं शुभाङ्ग्याः ॥१९॥
19. upasthitā sā mṛdur sarvagātrī śākhāṃ gṛhītvātha nagasya tasya ,
tasyāstu rāmaṃ pravicintayantyā rāmānujaṃ svaṃ ca kulaṃ śubhāṅgyāḥ.
19. upasthitā sā mṛduḥ sarvagātrī śākhām
gṛhītvā atha nagasya tasya
tasyāḥ tu rāmam pravicintayantyāḥ
rāmānujam svam ca kulam śubhāṅgyāḥ
19. sā mṛduḥ sarvagātrī upasthitā atha
tasya nagasya śākhām gṛhītvā
tasyāḥ śubhāṅgyāḥ tu rāmam rāmānujam
svam ca kulam pravicintayantyāḥ
19. She, with a tender body, approached and took hold of a branch of that tree. As that beautiful-limbed one was deeply contemplating Rama, his younger brother, and her own family.
शोकानिमित्तानि तदा बहूनि धैर्यार्जितानि प्रवराणि लोके ।
प्रादुर्निमित्तानि तदा बभूवुः पुरापि सिद्धान्युपलक्षितानि ॥२०॥
20. śokānimittāni tadā bahūni dhairyārjitāni pravarāṇi loke ,
prādurnimittāni tadā babhūvuḥ purāpi siddhānyupalakṣitāni.
20. śokānimittāni tadā bahūni dhairyārjitāni pravavarāṇi loke
prādurnimittāni tadā babhūvuḥ purā api siddhāni upalakṣitāni
20. tadā bahūni dhairyārjitāni pravavarāṇi loke śokānimittāni
prādurnimittāni babhūvuḥ tadā purā api siddhāni upalakṣitāni
20. Many omens of sorrow, renowned in the world for testing one's fortitude, then manifested. These were also previously well-established and observed.
