पुत्रशोकार्दितं पापा विसंज्ञं पतितं भुवि ।
विवेष्टमानमुदीक्ष्य सैक्ष्वाकमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. putraśokārditaṃ pāpā visaṃjñaṃ patitaṃ bhuvi ,
viveṣṭamānamudīkṣya saikṣvākamidamabravīt.

1. The sinful Kaikeyi, observing the Ikshvaku king, who was afflicted by the grief of his son's (exile), unconscious, fallen to the ground, and writhing, spoke these words to him.
पापं कृत्वेव किमिदं मम संश्रुत्य संश्रवम् ।
शेषे क्षितितले सन्नः स्थित्यां स्थातुं त्वमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. pāpaṃ kṛtveva kimidaṃ mama saṃśrutya saṃśravam ,
śeṣe kṣititale sannaḥ sthityāṃ sthātuṃ tvamarhasi.
2. pāpaṃ kṛtvā iva kim idam mama saṃśrutya saṃśravam
śeṣe kṣititale sannaḥ sthityām sthātuṃ tvam arhasi

2. "Why do you lie exhausted on the ground like this, as if you have committed a sin, after you had agreed to my promise? You ought to remain steadfast in your commitment (dharma)."
आहुः सत्यं हि परमं धर्मं धर्मविदो जनाः ।
सत्यमाश्रित्य हि मया त्वं च धर्मं प्रचोदितः ॥३॥
3. āhuḥ satyaṃ hi paramaṃ dharmaṃ dharmavido janāḥ ,
satyamāśritya hi mayā tvaṃ ca dharmaṃ pracoditaḥ.
3. āhuḥ satyaṃ hi paramaṃ dharmam dharmavidaḥ janāḥ
satyam āśritya hi mayā tvaṃ ca dharmam pracoditaḥ
3. janāḥ dharmavidaḥ hi satyaṃ paramaṃ dharmam āhuḥ
ca hi mayā satyam āśritya tvaṃ dharmam pracoditaḥ
3. Indeed, those who understand natural law (dharma) declare truth (satya) to be the supreme natural law (dharma). And it is by relying on truth (satya) that I have urged you towards natural law (dharma).
संश्रुत्य शैब्यः श्येनाय स्वां तनुं जगतीपतिः ।
प्रदाय पक्षिणो राजञ्जगाम गतिमुत्तमाम् ॥४॥
4. saṃśrutya śaibyaḥ śyenāya svāṃ tanuṃ jagatīpatiḥ ,
pradāya pakṣiṇo rājañjagāma gatimuttamām.

pradāya pakṣiṇaḥ rājan jagāma gatiṃ uttamām

4. O King, having promised his own body to the hawk, King Śaibya, the lord of the earth, after giving (it for the sake of the bird), attained the supreme destination.
तथ ह्यलर्कस्तेजस्वी ब्राह्मणे वेदपारगे ।
याचमाने स्वके नेत्रे उद्धृत्याविमना ददौ ॥५॥
5. tatha hyalarkastejasvī brāhmaṇe vedapārage ,
yācamāne svake netre uddhṛtyāvimanā dadau.
5. tathā hi alarkaḥ tejasvī brāhmaṇe vedapārage
yācamāne svake netre uddhṛtya avimanā dadau
5. hi tathā tejasvī alarkaḥ vedapārage yācamāne

5. Indeed, similarly, the glorious King Alarka, willingly plucked out his own two eyes and gave them to a Brahmin who was proficient in the Vedas and was begging for them.
सरितां तु पतिः स्वल्पां मर्यादां सत्यमन्वितः ।
सत्यानुरोधात् समये वेलां खां नातिवर्तते ॥६॥
6. saritāṃ tu patiḥ svalpāṃ maryādāṃ satyamanvitaḥ ,
satyānurodhāt samaye velāṃ khāṃ nātivartate.
6. saritāṃ tu patiḥ svalpāṃ maryādām satyam anvitāḥ
satyānurodhāt samaye velām svām na ativartate
6. tu saritāṃ patiḥ satyam anvitāḥ satyānurodhāt
svalpāṃ svām maryādām samaye velām na ativartate
6. But the lord of rivers (the ocean), imbued with truth (satya), does not overstep his own small boundary at the proper time, out of adherence to truth (satya).
समयं च ममार्येमं यदि त्वं न करिष्यसि ।
अग्रतस्ते परित्यक्ता परित्यक्ष्यामि जीवितम् ॥७॥
7. samayaṃ ca mamāryemaṃ yadi tvaṃ na kariṣyasi ,
agrataste parityaktā parityakṣyāmi jīvitam.
7. samayam ca mama ārye imam yadi tvam na kariṣyasi
agrataḥ te parityaktā parityakṣyāmi jīvitam
7. ārye yadi tvam mama imam samayam na kariṣyasi ca [tarhi]
te agrataḥ parityaktā [aham] jīvitam parityakṣyāmi
7. And if you, noble lady, do not fulfill this pledge of mine, I shall abandon my life right before your eyes, as one utterly forsaken.
एवं प्रचोदितो राजा कैकेय्या निर्विशङ्कया ।
नाशकत् पाशमुन्मोक्तुं बलिरिन्द्रकृतं यथा ॥८॥
8. evaṃ pracodito rājā kaikeyyā nirviśaṅkayā ,
nāśakat pāśamunmoktuṃ balirindrakṛtaṃ yathā.
8. evam pracoditaḥ rājā kaikeyyā nirviśaṅkayā na
aśakat pāśam unmoktum baliḥ indra-kṛtam yathā
8. evam nirviśaṅkayā kaikeyyā pracoditaḥ rājā indra-kṛtam
pāśam unmoktum na aśakat yathā baliḥ [na aśakat]
8. Thus urged by Kaikeyī, who was utterly fearless, the king was unable to free himself from the bond, just as Bali could not escape the one created by Indra.
उद्भ्रान्तहृदयश्चापि विवर्णवनदो ऽभवत् ।
स धुर्यो वै परिस्पन्दन्युगचक्रान्तरं यथा ॥९॥
9. udbhrāntahṛdayaścāpi vivarṇavanado'bhavat ,
sa dhuryo vai parispandanyugacakrāntaraṃ yathā.
9. udbhrānta-hṛdayaḥ ca api vivarṇa-vadanaḥ abhavat
saḥ dhuryaḥ vai parispandan yuga-cakra-antaram yathā
9. ca api udbhrānta-hṛdayaḥ vivarṇa-vadanaḥ [saḥ rājā] abhavat
saḥ dhuryaḥ vai yuga-cakra-antaram parispandan yathā
9. And with an agitated heart and a pale face, he became like a beast of burden trembling between the yoke and the wheel.
विह्वलाभ्यां च नेत्राभ्यामपश्यन्निव भूमिपः ।
कृच्छ्राद्धैर्येण संस्तभ्य कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१०॥
10. vihvalābhyāṃ ca netrābhyāmapaśyanniva bhūmipaḥ ,
kṛcchrāddhairyeṇa saṃstabhya kaikeyīmidamabravīt.
10. vihvalābhyām ca netrābhyām apaśyan iva bhūmipaḥ
kṛcchrāt dhairyeṇa saṃstabhya kaikeyīm idam abravīt
10. bhūmipaḥ ca vihvalābhyām netrābhyām iva apaśyan
kṛcchrāt dhairyeṇa saṃstabhya idam kaikeyīm abravīt
10. And with agitated eyes, the king, as if unable to see, composed himself with great difficulty and fortitude, and then spoke this to Kaikeyī.
यस्ते मन्त्रकृतः पाणिरग्नौ पापे मया धृतः ।
तं त्यजामि स्वजं चैव तव पुत्रं सह त्वया ॥११॥
11. yaste mantrakṛtaḥ pāṇiragnau pāpe mayā dhṛtaḥ ,
taṃ tyajāmi svajaṃ caiva tava putraṃ saha tvayā.
11. yaḥ te mantra-kṛtaḥ pāṇiḥ agnau pāpe mayā dhṛtaḥ
tam tyajāmi sva-jam ca eva tava putram saha tvayā
11. yaḥ te mantra-kṛtaḥ pāṇiḥ agnau pāpe mayā dhṛtaḥ,
tam tyajāmi.
sva-jam ca eva tava putram tvayā saha (tyajāmi).
11. That hand of yours, belonging to the one who performs sacred rites (mantra), which was held by me in sin in the fire - that I abandon. And I also abandon my own son, your offspring, along with you.
ततः पापसमाचारा कैकेयी पार्थिवं पुनः ।
उवाच परुषं वाक्यं वाक्यज्ञा रोषमूर्छिता ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ pāpasamācārā kaikeyī pārthivaṃ punaḥ ,
uvāca paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ vākyajñā roṣamūrchitā.
12. tataḥ pāpa-samācārā kaikeyī pārthivam punaḥ
uvāca paruṣam vākyam vākya-jñā roṣa-mūrchitā
12. tataḥ pāpa-samācārā vākya-jñā roṣa-mūrchitā
kaikeyī punaḥ pārthivam paruṣam vākyam uvāca
12. Thereupon, Kaikeyī, whose conduct was sinful, and who was skilled in speech yet overcome with rage, again spoke harsh words to the king.
किमिदं भाषसे राजन् वाक्यं गररुजोपमम् ।
आनाययितुमक्लिष्टं पुत्रं राममिहार्हसि ॥१३॥
13. kimidaṃ bhāṣase rājan vākyaṃ gararujopamam ,
ānāyayitumakliṣṭaṃ putraṃ rāmamihārhasi.
13. kim idam bhāṣase rājan vākyam gara-rujā-upamam
ānāyayitum akliṣṭam putram rāmam iha arhasi
13. rājan kim idam vākyam gara-rujā-upamam bhāṣase
akliṣṭam putram rāmam iha ānāyayitum arhasi
13. O King, what is this speech you utter, which is like a disease caused by poison? You ought to summon your untroubled son Rāma here.
स्थाप्य राज्ये मम सुतं कृत्वा रामं वनेचरम् ।
निःसपत्नां च मां कृत्वा कृतकृत्यो भविष्यसि ॥१४॥
14. sthāpya rājye mama sutaṃ kṛtvā rāmaṃ vanecaram ,
niḥsapatnāṃ ca māṃ kṛtvā kṛtakṛtyo bhaviṣyasi.
14. sthāpya rājye mama sutam kṛtvā rāmam vana-caram
niḥ-sapatnām ca mām kṛtvā kṛta-kṛtyaḥ bhaviṣyasi
14. mama sutam rājye sthāpya rāmam vana-caram kṛtvā
ca mām niḥ-sapatnām kṛtvā kṛta-kṛtyaḥ bhaviṣyasi
14. Having installed my son in the kingdom, and having made Rāma an inhabitant of the forest, and having made me free from rivals, you will have accomplished your duty.
स नुन्न इव तीक्षेण प्रतोदेन हयोत्तमः ।
राजा प्रदोचितो ऽभीक्ष्णं कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. sa nunna iva tīkṣeṇa pratodena hayottamaḥ ,
rājā pradocito'bhīkṣṇaṃ kaikeyīmidamabravīt.
15. sa nunnaḥ iva tīkṣṇena pratodena hayottamaḥ
rājā pradocitaḥ abhīkṣṇam kaikeyīm idam abravīt
15. rājā tīkṣṇena pratodena nunnaḥ hayottamaḥ iva
kaikeyīm abhīkṣṇam pradocitaḥ saḥ idam abravīt
15. Like an excellent horse spurred by a sharp goad, the king, repeatedly provoked by Kaikeyī, said this to her.
धर्मबन्धेन बद्धो ऽस्मि नष्टा च मम चेतना ।
ज्येष्ठं पुत्रं प्रियं रामं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि धार्मिकम् ॥१६॥
16. dharmabandhena baddho'smi naṣṭā ca mama cetanā ,
jyeṣṭhaṃ putraṃ priyaṃ rāmaṃ draṣṭumicchāmi dhārmikam.
16. dharmabandhena baddhaḥ asmi naṣṭā ca mama cetanā
jyeṣṭham putram priyam rāmam draṣṭum icchāmi dhārmikam
16. dharmabandhena baddhaḥ asmi ca mama cetanā naṣṭā
jyeṣṭham priyam dhārmikam putram rāmam draṣṭum icchāmi
16. I am bound by the bond of my intrinsic nature (dharma), and my consciousness is lost. I wish to see my eldest, beloved, righteous son Rama.
इति राज्ञो वचः श्रुत्वा कैकेयी तदनन्तरम् ।
स्वयमेवाब्रवीत् सूतं गच्छ त्वं राममानय ॥१७॥
17. iti rājño vacaḥ śrutvā kaikeyī tadanantaram ,
svayamevābravīt sūtaṃ gaccha tvaṃ rāmamānaya.
17. iti rājñaḥ vacaḥ śrutvā kaikeyī tadanantaram
svayam eva abravīt sūtam gaccha tvam rāmam ānaya
17. kaikeyī rājñaḥ vacaḥ iti śrutvā tadanantaram
svayam eva sūtam abravīt tvam gaccha rāmam ānaya
17. Having heard these words of the king, Kaikeyī immediately thereafter herself said to the charioteer, "Go, and you bring Rama!"
ततः स राजा तं सूतं सन्नहर्षः सुतं प्रति ।
शोकारक्तेक्षणः श्रीमानुद्वीक्ष्योवाच धार्मिकः ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ sa rājā taṃ sūtaṃ sannaharṣaḥ sutaṃ prati ,
śokāraktekṣaṇaḥ śrīmānudvīkṣyovāca dhārmikaḥ.
18. tataḥ saḥ rājā tam sūtam sannaharṣaḥ sutam prati
śokāraktekṣaṇaḥ śrīmān udvīkṣya uvāca dhārmikaḥ
18. tataḥ saḥ śrīmān dhārmikaḥ rājā sutam prati
sannaharṣaḥ śokāraktekṣaṇaḥ tam sūtam udvīkṣya uvāca
18. Then that glorious and righteous king, his joy having subsided concerning his son, and with eyes red from sorrow, looked up at that charioteer and spoke.
सुमन्त्रः करुणं श्रुत्वा दृष्ट्वा दीनं च पार्थिवम् ।
प्रगृहीताञ्जलिः किं चित्तस्माद्देशादपाक्रमन् ॥१९॥
19. sumantraḥ karuṇaṃ śrutvā dṛṣṭvā dīnaṃ ca pārthivam ,
pragṛhītāñjaliḥ kiṃ cittasmāddeśādapākraman.
19. sumantraḥ karuṇam śrutvā dṛṣṭvā dīnam ca pārthivam
pragṛhītāñjaliḥ kim cit tasmāt deśāt apākraman
19. sumantraḥ karuṇam śrutvā dīnam pārthivam ca dṛṣṭvā
pragṛhītāñjaliḥ tasmāt deśāt kiṃ cit apākraman
19. Sumantra, having heard the pitiable [words] and seen the distressed king, with clasped hands, withdrew somewhat from that place.
यदा वक्तुं स्वयं दैन्यान्न शशाक महीपतिः ।
तदा सुमन्त्रं मन्त्रज्ञा कैकेयी प्रत्युवाच ह ॥२०॥
20. yadā vaktuṃ svayaṃ dainyānna śaśāka mahīpatiḥ ,
tadā sumantraṃ mantrajñā kaikeyī pratyuvāca ha.
20. yadā vaktum svayam dainyāt na śaśāka mahīpatiḥ
tadā sumantram mantrajñā kaikeyī prati uvāca ha
20. yadā mahīpatiḥ svayam dainyāt vaktum na śaśāka
tadā mantrajñā kaikeyī sumantram prati uvāca ha
20. When the king himself was unable to speak due to his misery, then Kaikeyī, the astute one [skilled in counsel], spoke in reply to Sumantra.
सुमन्त्र रामं द्रक्ष्यामि शीघ्रमानय सुन्दरम् ।
स मन्यमानः कल्याणं हृदयेन ननन्द च ॥२१॥
21. sumantra rāmaṃ drakṣyāmi śīghramānaya sundaram ,
sa manyamānaḥ kalyāṇaṃ hṛdayena nananda ca.
21. sumantra rāmam drakṣyāmi śīghram ānaya sundaram
saḥ manyamānaḥ kalyāṇam hṛdayena nananda ca
21. sumantra rāmam drakṣyāmi sundaram śīghram ānaya
saḥ ca kalyāṇam manyamānaḥ hṛdayena nananda
21. O Sumantra, I shall see Rama; bring the handsome one quickly. And he [Sumantra], considering this to be a good thing, rejoiced in his heart.
सुमन्त्रश्चिन्तयामास त्वरितं चोदितस्तया ।
व्यक्तं रामो ऽभिषेकार्थमिहायास्यति धर्मवित् ॥२२॥
22. sumantraścintayāmāsa tvaritaṃ coditastayā ,
vyaktaṃ rāmo'bhiṣekārthamihāyāsyati dharmavit.
22. sumantraḥ cintayāmāsa tvaritam coditaḥ tayā
vyaktam rāmaḥ abhiṣekārtham iha āyāsyati dharmavit
22. sumantraḥ tayā tvaritam coditaḥ cintayāmāsa
vyaktam dharmavit rāmaḥ abhiṣekārtham iha āyāsyati
22. Sumantra, urged quickly by her, thought: 'Clearly, Rama, the knower of natural law (dharma), will come here for the consecration.'
इति सूतो मतिं कृत्वा हर्षेण महता पुनः ।
निर्जगाम महातेजा राघवस्य दिदृक्षया ॥२३॥
23. iti sūto matiṃ kṛtvā harṣeṇa mahatā punaḥ ,
nirjagāma mahātejā rāghavasya didṛkṣayā.
23. iti sūtaḥ matim kṛtvā harṣeṇa mahatā punaḥ
nirjagāma mahātejāḥ rāghavasya didṛkṣayā
23. iti mahātejāḥ sūtaḥ mahatā harṣeṇa matim
kṛtvā punaḥ rāghavasya didṛkṣayā nirjagāma
23. Thus, the greatly energetic charioteer, having made this resolution with great joy, again set out, desiring to see Rāghava.
ततः पुरस्तात् सहसा विनिर्गतो महीपतीन्द्वारगतान् विलोकयन् ।
ददर्श पौरान् विविधान्महाधनानुपस्थितान्द्वारमुपेत्य विष्ठितान् ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ purastāt sahasā vinirgato mahīpatīndvāragatān vilokayan ,
dadarśa paurān vividhānmahādhanānupasthitāndvāramupetya viṣṭhitān.

24. Then, having quickly emerged, he saw the kings who were present at the gate. Approaching the gate, he also observed various wealthy and diverse citizens standing there, assembled.
