एतदाख्याय रामाय महर्षिः कुम्भसंभवः ।
अस्यामेवापरं वाक्यं कथायामुपचक्रमे ॥१॥
1. etadākhyāya rāmāya maharṣiḥ kumbhasaṃbhavaḥ ,
asyāmevāparaṃ vākyaṃ kathāyāmupacakrame.

1. Having narrated this to Rāma, the great sage Agastya then commenced another statement within this same narrative.
ततः स दण्डः काकुत्स्थ बहुवर्षगणायुतम् ।
अकरोत्तत्र मन्दात्मा राज्यं निहतकण्टकम् ॥२॥
2. tataḥ sa daṇḍaḥ kākutstha bahuvarṣagaṇāyutam ,
akarottatra mandātmā rājyaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam.

akarot tatra mandātmā rājyam nihatakaṇṭakam
2. Then, O scion of Kakutstha, that foolish-minded Daṇḍa ruled there, for a multitude of years, his kingdom free from enemies.
अथ काले तु कस्मिंश्चिद् राजा भार्गवमाश्रमम् ।
रमणीयमुपाक्रामच्चैत्रे मासि मनोरमे ॥३॥
3. atha kāle tu kasmiṃścid rājā bhārgavamāśramam ,
ramaṇīyamupākrāmaccaitre māsi manorame.

3. Then, at a certain time, the king approached the charming hermitage (āśrama) of the Bhārgava sage in the delightful month of Caitra.
तत्र भार्गवकन्यां स रूपेणाप्रतिमां भुवि ।
विचरन्तीं वनोद्देशे दण्डो ऽपश्यदनुत्तमाम् ॥४॥
4. tatra bhārgavakanyāṃ sa rūpeṇāpratimāṃ bhuvi ,
vicarantīṃ vanoddeśe daṇḍo'paśyadanuttamām.
4. tatra bhārgavakanyām saḥ rūpeṇa apratimām bhuvi
vicarantīm vana-uddeśe daṇḍaḥ apaśyat anuttamām
4. saḥ daṇḍaḥ tatra vana-uddeśe bhuvi rūpeṇa apratimām

4. King Daṇḍa saw the daughter of Bhārgava, unparalleled in beauty on earth, wandering in that forest region.
स दृष्ट्वा तां सुदुर्मेधा अनङ्गशरपीडितः ।
अभिगम्य सुसंविग्नः कन्यां वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. sa dṛṣṭvā tāṃ sudurmedhā anaṅgaśarapīḍitaḥ ,
abhigamya susaṃvignaḥ kanyāṃ vacanamabravīt.
5. saḥ dṛṣṭvā tām sudurmedhāḥ anaṅga-śara-pīḍitaḥ
abhigamya susaṃvignaḥ kanyām vacanam abravīt
5. saḥ sudurmedhāḥ anaṅga-śara-pīḍitaḥ susaṃvignaḥ
tām dṛṣṭvā abhigamya kanyām vacanam abravīt
5. Having seen her, he, being exceedingly foolish and tormented by the arrows of the god of love, approached the maiden in great agitation and spoke to her.
कुतस्त्वमसि सुश्रोणि कस्य वासि सुता शुभे ।
पीडितो ऽहमनङ्गेन पृच्छामि त्वां सुमध्यमे ॥६॥
6. kutastvamasi suśroṇi kasya vāsi sutā śubhe ,
pīḍito'hamanaṅgena pṛcchāmi tvāṃ sumadhyame.
6. kutaḥ tvam asi suśroṇi kasya vā asi sutā śubhe
pīḍitaḥ aham anaṅgena pṛcchāmi tvām sumadhyame
6. suśroṇi śubhe sumadhyame tvam kutaḥ asi vā kasya
sutā asi aham anaṅgena pīḍitaḥ tvām pṛcchāmi
6. "O lady with beautiful hips, where are you from? Or whose daughter are you, O beautiful one? I am tormented by the god of love; I ask you, O slender-waisted one."
तस्य त्वेवं ब्रुवाणस्य मोहोन्मत्तस्य कामिनः ।
भार्गवी प्रत्युवाचेदं वचः सानुनयं नृपम् ॥७॥
7. tasya tvevaṃ bruvāṇasya mohonmattasya kāminaḥ ,
bhārgavī pratyuvācedaṃ vacaḥ sānunayaṃ nṛpam.
7. tasya tu evam bruvāṇasya moha-unmattasya kāminaḥ
bhārgavī pratyuvāca idam vacaḥ sa-anunayam nṛpam
7. tu bhārgavī evam bruvāṇasya moha-unmattasya kāminaḥ
tasya nṛpam sa-anunayam idam vacaḥ pratyuvāca
7. But to the king, who was speaking thus, maddened by delusion and overcome by desire, Bhārgavī replied with these words respectfully.
भार्गवस्य सुतां विद्धि देवस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
अरजां नाम राजेन्द्र ज्येष्ठामाश्रमवासिनीम् ॥८॥
8. bhārgavasya sutāṃ viddhi devasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
arajāṃ nāma rājendra jyeṣṭhāmāśramavāsinīm.
8. bhārgavasya sutām viddhi devasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ
| arajām nāma rājendra jyeṣṭhām āśramavāsinīm
8. rājendra devasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ bhārgavasya
jyeṣṭhām āśramavāsinīm arajām nāma sutām viddhi
8. O king of kings, know that she is named Arāja, the eldest daughter of the god Bhargava, whose deeds are unimpeded, and who dwells in the hermitage.
गुरुः पिता मे राजेन्द्र त्वं च शिष्यो महात्मनः ।
व्यसनं सुमहत् क्रुद्धः स ते दद्यान्महातपाः ॥९॥
9. guruḥ pitā me rājendra tvaṃ ca śiṣyo mahātmanaḥ ,
vyasanaṃ sumahat kruddhaḥ sa te dadyānmahātapāḥ.
9. guruḥ pitā me rājendra tvam ca śiṣyaḥ mahātmanaḥ |
vyasanam sumahat kruddhaḥ saḥ te dadyāt mahātapaḥ
9. rājendra me pitā guruḥ ca tvam mahātmanaḥ śiṣyaḥ
saḥ mahātapaḥ kruddhaḥ te sumahat vyasanam dadyāt
9. O king of kings, my father is a preceptor (guru), and you are the disciple of a great-souled one (mahātman). Should he become enraged, that great ascetic (mahātapaḥ) could inflict upon you a very great misfortune.
यदि वात्र मया कार्यं धर्मदृष्टेन सत्पथा ।
वरयस्व नृप श्रेष्ठ पितरं मे महाद्युतिम् ॥१०॥
10. yadi vātra mayā kāryaṃ dharmadṛṣṭena satpathā ,
varayasva nṛpa śreṣṭha pitaraṃ me mahādyutim.
10. yadi vā atra mayā kāryam dharmadṛṣṭena satpathā
| varayasva nṛpaśreṣṭha pitaram me mahādyutim
10. nṛpaśreṣṭha yadi vā atra mayā dharmadṛṣṭena satpathā kāryam (asti),
me mahādyutim pitaraṃ varayasva
10. Or if some action (karma) is to be performed by me here, following the virtuous path in accordance with (dharma), then, O best of kings, choose my greatly resplendent father.
अन्यथा तु फलं तुभ्यं भवेद्घोराभिसंहितम् ।
क्रोधेन हि पिता मे ऽसौ त्रैलोक्यमपि निर्दहेत् ॥११॥
11. anyathā tu phalaṃ tubhyaṃ bhavedghorābhisaṃhitam ,
krodhena hi pitā me'sau trailokyamapi nirdahet.
11. anyathā tu phalam tubhyam bhavet ghorābhisaṃhitam
| krodhena hi pitā me asau trailokyam api nirdahat
11. anyathā tu tubhyam ghorābhisaṃhitam phalam bhavet
hi me asau pitā krodhena api trailokyam nirdahat
11. Otherwise, the result for you would indeed be fraught with dreadful consequences. For my father, when angered, could surely burn down even the three worlds.
एवं ब्रुवाणामरजां दण्डः कामशरार्दितः ।
प्रत्युवाच मदोन्मत्तः शिरस्याधाय सो ऽञ्जलिम् ॥१२॥
12. evaṃ bruvāṇāmarajāṃ daṇḍaḥ kāmaśarārditaḥ ,
pratyuvāca madonmattaḥ śirasyādhāya so'ñjalim.
12. evam bruvāṇām amarajām daṇḍaḥ kāmaśarārditaḥ |
pratyuvāca madonmattaḥ śirasi ādhāya saḥ añjalim
12. evam bruvāṇām amarajām kāmaśarārditaḥ madonmattaḥ
saḥ daṇḍaḥ śirasi añjalim ādhāya pratyuvāca
12. Daṇḍa, tormented by the arrows of desire (kāma) and intoxicated with passion, placed his palms together on his head and replied to Amarajā, who had spoken in this manner.
प्रसादं कुरु सुश्रोणि न कालं क्षेप्तुमर्हसि ।
त्वत्कृते हि मम प्राणा विदीर्यन्ते शुभानने ॥१३॥
13. prasādaṃ kuru suśroṇi na kālaṃ kṣeptumarhasi ,
tvatkṛte hi mama prāṇā vidīryante śubhānane.
13. prasādam kuru suśroṇi na kālam kṣeptum arhasi
| tvatkṛte hi mama prāṇāḥ vidīryante śubhānane
13. suśroṇi prasādam kuru kālam kṣeptum na arhasi
śubhānane hi tvatkṛte mama prāṇāḥ vidīryante
13. "Show me grace, O beautiful lady; you should not waste time. Indeed, for your sake, my very life (prāṇa) is being torn apart, O lady of lovely face."
त्वां प्राप्य हि वधो वापि पापं वापि सुदारुणम् ।
भक्तं भजस्व मां भीरु भजमानं सुविह्वलम् ॥१४॥
14. tvāṃ prāpya hi vadho vāpi pāpaṃ vāpi sudāruṇam ,
bhaktaṃ bhajasva māṃ bhīru bhajamānaṃ suvihvalam.
14. tvām prāpya hi vadhaḥ vā api pāpam vā api sudāruṇam
| bhaktam bhajasva mām bhīru bhajamānam suvihvalam
14. hi tvām prāpya vadhaḥ vā api sudāruṇam pāpam vā api (svīkāryam
syāt) bhīru bhaktam suvihvalam bhajamānam mām bhajasva
14. "Indeed, having attained you, even death or a most terrible sin would be acceptable. O timid one, please accept me, your devotee, who is utterly distraught and devoted to you."
एवमुक्त्वा तु तां कन्यां दोर्भ्यां गृह्य बलाद्बली ।
विस्फुरन्तीं यथाकामं मैथुनायोपचक्रमे ॥१५॥
15. evamuktvā tu tāṃ kanyāṃ dorbhyāṃ gṛhya balādbalī ,
visphurantīṃ yathākāmaṃ maithunāyopacakrame.
15. evam uktvā tu tām kanyām dorbhyām gṛhya balāt balī
| visphurantīm yathākāmam maithunāya upacakrame
15. balī evam uktvā tu dorbhyām balāt visphurantīm
tām kanyām gṛhya yathākāmam maithunāya upacakrame
15. Having spoken thus, the powerful Daṇḍa seized that girl forcefully with both his arms. As she struggled, he proceeded to engage in sexual intercourse according to his desire.
तमनर्थं महाघोरं दण्डः कृत्वा सुदारुणम् ।
नगरं प्रययौ चाशु मधुमन्तमनुत्तमम् ॥१६॥
16. tamanarthaṃ mahāghoraṃ daṇḍaḥ kṛtvā sudāruṇam ,
nagaraṃ prayayau cāśu madhumantamanuttamam.
16. tam anartham mahāghoram daṇḍaḥ kṛtvā sudāruṇam
nagaram prayayau ca āśu madhumantam anuttamam
16. daṇḍaḥ tam mahāghoram sudāruṇam anartham kṛtvā
ca āśu anuttamam madhumantam nagaram prayayau
16. King Daṇḍa, having brought about that exceedingly terrible and cruel calamity, quickly went to the preeminent city of Madhumant.
अरजापि रुदन्ती सा आश्रमस्याविदूरतः ।
प्रतीक्षते सुसंत्रस्ता पितरं देवसंनिभम् ॥१७॥
17. arajāpi rudantī sā āśramasyāvidūrataḥ ,
pratīkṣate susaṃtrastā pitaraṃ devasaṃnibham.
17. arajā api rudantī sā āśramasya avidūrataḥ
pratīkṣate susaṃtrastā pitaram devasaṃnibham
17. sā arajā api rudantī susaṃtrastā āśramasya
avidūrataḥ devasaṃnibham pitaram pratīkṣate
17. Even weeping and greatly terrified, she, Arajā, waited not far from the hermitage (āśrama) for her god-like father.
