ते दूता रामवाक्येन चोदिता लघुविक्रमाः ।
प्रजग्मुर्मधुरां शीघ्रं चक्रुर्वासं न चाध्वनि ॥१॥
1. te dūtā rāmavākyena coditā laghuvikramāḥ ,
prajagmurmadhurāṃ śīghraṃ cakrurvāsaṃ na cādhvani.

1. Impelled by Rama's word, those swift-moving messengers quickly set off for Mathura and did not make any stop on the way.
ततस्त्रिभिरहो रात्रैः संप्राप्य मधुरामथ ।
शत्रुघ्नाय यथावृत्तमाचख्युः सर्वमेव तत् ॥२॥
2. tatastribhiraho rātraiḥ saṃprāpya madhurāmatha ,
śatrughnāya yathāvṛttamācakhyuḥ sarvameva tat.
2. tataḥ tribhiḥ ahorātraiḥ samprāpya madhurām atha
śatrughnāya yathāvṛttam ācakhyuḥ sarvam eva tat
2. tataḥ atha tribhiḥ ahorātraiḥ madhurām samprāpya,

2. Then, having arrived at Mathura after three days and nights, they narrated to Shatrughna everything that had transpired.
लक्ष्मणस्य परित्यागं प्रतिज्ञां राघवस्य च ।
पुत्रयोरभिषेकं च पौरानुगमनं तथा ॥३॥
3. lakṣmaṇasya parityāgaṃ pratijñāṃ rāghavasya ca ,
putrayorabhiṣekaṃ ca paurānugamanaṃ tathā.

3. (They informed him about) the abandonment of Lakshmana, the solemn vow of Rama (rāghava), the consecration of his two sons, and also the citizens' following.
कुशस्य नगरी रम्या विन्ध्यपर्वतरोधसि ।
कुशावतीति नाम्ना सा कृता रामेण धीमता ॥४॥
4. kuśasya nagarī ramyā vindhyaparvatarodhasi ,
kuśāvatīti nāmnā sā kṛtā rāmeṇa dhīmatā.

kuśāvatī iti nāmnā sā kṛtā rāmeṇa dhīmatā

4. A charming city, Kuśāvatī by name, was built by the wise (dhīmat) Rāma for (his son) Kuśa on the slopes of the Vindhya mountain.
श्राविता च पुरी रम्या श्रावतीति लवस्य च ।
अयोध्यां विजनां चैव भरतं राघवानुगम् ॥५॥
5. śrāvitā ca purī ramyā śrāvatīti lavasya ca ,
ayodhyāṃ vijanāṃ caiva bharataṃ rāghavānugam.
5. śrāvitā ca purī ramyā śrāvāvatī iti lavasya ca
ayodhyām vijanām ca eva bharatam rāghavānugam
5. ramyā purī śrāvāvatī iti ca lavasya śrāvitā

5. And the charming city named Śrāvāvatī was established for Lava. (As for) Ayodhyā, it was desolate, and Bharata remained the loyal follower of Raghava (Rāma).
एवं सर्वं निवेद्याशु शत्रुघ्नाय महात्मने ।
विरेमुस्ते ततो दूतास्त्वर राजन्निति ब्रुवन् ॥६॥
6. evaṃ sarvaṃ nivedyāśu śatrughnāya mahātmane ,
viremuste tato dūtāstvara rājanniti bruvan.
6. evam sarvam nivedya āśu śatrughnāya mahātmane
viremuḥ te tataḥ dūtāḥ tvara rājan iti bruvan
6. evam sarvam āśu mahātmane śatrughnāya nivedya

6. Thus, having quickly informed the great-souled Śatrughna of everything, those messengers then ceased speaking, saying, "Hurry, O King!"
श्रुत्वा तं घोरसंकाशं कुलक्षयमुपस्थितम् ।
प्रकृतीस्तु समानीय काञ्चनं च पुरोहितम् ॥७॥
7. śrutvā taṃ ghorasaṃkāśaṃ kulakṣayamupasthitam ,
prakṛtīstu samānīya kāñcanaṃ ca purohitam.
7. śrutvā tam ghorasaṃkāśam kulakṣayam upasthitam
prakṛtīḥ tu samānīya kāñcanam ca purohitam
7. tam ghorasaṃkāśam upasthitam kulakṣayam śrutvā

7. Upon hearing of that impending, terrible-looking destruction of the family (kula), and having summoned the chief ministers (prakṛti) and the golden-complexioned royal priest (purohita)...
तेषां सर्वं यथावृत्तमाख्याय रघुनन्दनः ।
आत्मनश्च विपर्यासं भविष्यं भ्रातृभिः सह ॥८॥
8. teṣāṃ sarvaṃ yathāvṛttamākhyāya raghunandanaḥ ,
ātmanaśca viparyāsaṃ bhaviṣyaṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha.
8. teṣām sarvam yathāvṛttam ākhyāya raghunandanaḥ
ātmanaḥ ca viparyāsam bhaviṣyam bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
8. raghunandanaḥ teṣām sarvam yathāvṛttam ātmanaḥ

8. Having narrated to them all that had transpired, and also his own future misfortune (viparyāsa) along with his brothers, Rama, the delight of the Raghus...
ततः पुत्रद्वयं वीरः सो ऽभ्यषिञ्चन्नराधिपः ।
सुबाहुर्मधुरां लेभे शत्रुघाती च वैदिशम् ॥९॥
9. tataḥ putradvayaṃ vīraḥ so'bhyaṣiñcannarādhipaḥ ,
subāhurmadhurāṃ lebhe śatrughātī ca vaidiśam.
9. tataḥ putradvayam vīraḥ saḥ abhyaṣiñcat narādhipaḥ
subāhuḥ madhurām lebhe śatrughātī ca vaidiśam
9. tataḥ saḥ vīraḥ narādhipaḥ putradvayam abhyaṣiñcat
subāhuḥ madhurām lebhe śatrughātī ca vaidiśam
9. Then, that heroic king consecrated his two sons. Subahu received Mathura, and Shatrughna, the slayer of enemies, received Vidisha.
द्विधाकृत्वा तु तां सेनां माधुरीं पुत्रयोर्द्वयोः ।
धनधान्यसमायुक्तौ स्थापयामास पार्थिवौ ॥१०॥
10. dvidhākṛtvā tu tāṃ senāṃ mādhurīṃ putrayordvayoḥ ,
dhanadhānyasamāyuktau sthāpayāmāsa pārthivau.
10. dvidhākṛtvā tu tām senām mādhurīm putrayoḥ dvayoḥ
dhanadhānyasamāyuktāu sthāpayāmāsa pārthivau

10. Having divided that Mathuran army into two for his two sons, he established the two kings, who were well-endowed with wealth and grain.
ततो विसृज्य राजानं वैदिशे शत्रुघातिनम् ।
जगाम त्वरितो ऽयोध्यां रथेनैकेन राघवः ॥११॥
11. tato visṛjya rājānaṃ vaidiśe śatrughātinam ,
jagāma tvarito'yodhyāṃ rathenaikena rāghavaḥ.
11. tataḥ visṛjya rājānam vaidiśe śatrughātinam
jagāma tvaritaḥ ayodhyām rathena ekena rāghavaḥ
11. tataḥ rāghavaḥ vaidiśe śatrughātinam rājānam
visṛjya tvaritaḥ ekena rathena ayodhyām jagāma
11. Then, having dismissed King Shatrughna in Vidisha, Rama, the descendant of Raghu, swiftly went to Ayodhya with a single chariot.
स ददर्श महात्मानं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम् ।
क्षौमसूक्ष्माम्बरधरं मुनिभिः सार्धमक्षयैः ॥१२॥
12. sa dadarśa mahātmānaṃ jvalantamiva pāvakam ,
kṣaumasūkṣmāmbaradharaṃ munibhiḥ sārdhamakṣayaiḥ.
12. saḥ dadarśa mahātmānam jvalantam iva pāvakam
kṣaumasūkṣmāmbaradharam munibhiḥ sārdham akṣayaiḥ
12. saḥ mahātmānam jvalantam pāvakam iva
kṣaumasūkṣmāmbaradharam akṣayaiḥ munibhiḥ sārdham dadarśa
12. He saw the great soul (muni) shining like fire, clad in fine silken garments, accompanied by immortal sages (munis).
सो ऽभिवाद्य ततो रामं प्राञ्जलिः प्रयतेन्द्रियः ।
उवाच वाक्यं धर्मज्ञो धर्ममेवानुचिन्तयन् ॥१३॥
13. so'bhivādya tato rāmaṃ prāñjaliḥ prayatendriyaḥ ,
uvāca vākyaṃ dharmajño dharmamevānucintayan.
13. saḥ abhivādya tataḥ rāmam prāñjaliḥ prayatendriyaḥ
uvāca vākyam dharmajñaḥ dharmam eva anucintayan
13. tataḥ saḥ prāñjaliḥ prayatendriyaḥ rāmam abhivādya
dharmajñaḥ dharmam eva anucintayan vākyam uvāca
13. Then, having respectfully saluted Rāma with folded hands and self-controlled senses, he, a knower of natural law (dharma), spoke, contemplating only natural law (dharma).
कृत्वाभिषेकं सुतयोर्युक्तं राघवयोर्धनैः ।
तवानुगमने राजन् विद्धि मां कृतनिश्चयम् ॥१४॥
14. kṛtvābhiṣekaṃ sutayoryuktaṃ rāghavayordhanaiḥ ,
tavānugamane rājan viddhi māṃ kṛtaniścayam.
14. kṛtvā abhiṣekam sutayoḥ yuktam rāghavayoḥ dhanaiḥ
tava anugamane rājan viddhi mām kṛtaniścayam
14. rājan sutayoḥ rāghavayoḥ dhanaiḥ yuktam abhiṣekam kṛtvā,
tava anugamane mām kṛtaniścayam viddhi
14. O king, know that I am determined to follow you, having performed the consecration of your two sons and endowed them with wealth.
न चान्यदत्र वक्तव्यं दुस्तरं तव शासनम् ।
त्यक्तुं नार्हसि मां वीर भक्तिमन्तं विशेषतः ॥१५॥
15. na cānyadatra vaktavyaṃ dustaraṃ tava śāsanam ,
tyaktuṃ nārhasi māṃ vīra bhaktimantaṃ viśeṣataḥ.
15. na ca anyat atra vaktavyam dustaram tava śāsanam
tyaktum na arhasi mām vīra bhaktimantam viśeṣataḥ
15. atra anyat ca na vaktavyam; tava śāsanam dustaram.
vīra,
bhaktimantam mām tyaktum na arhasi viśeṣataḥ
15. There is nothing more to be said here; your command is difficult to transgress. O hero, you should not abandon me, especially one who possesses devotion (bhakti).
तस्य तां बुद्धिमक्लीबां विज्ञाय रघुनन्दनः ।
बाढमित्येव शत्रुघ्नं रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. tasya tāṃ buddhimaklībāṃ vijñāya raghunandanaḥ ,
bāḍhamityeva śatrughnaṃ rāmo vacanamabravīt.
16. tasya tām buddhim aklībām vijñāya raghunandanaḥ
bāḍham iti eva śatrughnam rāmaḥ vacanam abravīt
16. raghunandanaḥ rāmaḥ tasya tām aklībām buddhim
vijñāya bāḍham iti eva śatrughnam vacanam abravīt
16. Having understood his unwavering resolve, Rāma, the scion of Raghu, said to Śatrughna, "So be it," indeed.
तस्य वाक्यस्य वाक्यान्ते वानराः कामरूपिणः ।
ऋक्षराक्षससंघाश्च समापेतुरनेकशः ॥१७॥
17. tasya vākyasya vākyānte vānarāḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ,
ṛkṣarākṣasasaṃghāśca samāpeturanekaśaḥ.
17. tasya vākyasya vākya ante vānarāḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ
ṛkṣa rākṣasa saṅghāḥ ca samāpetuḥ anekaśaḥ
17. tasya vākyasya vākya ante kāmarūpiṇaḥ vānarāḥ
ca ṛkṣa rākṣasa saṅghāḥ anekaśaḥ samāpetuḥ
17. At the conclusion of his statement, monkeys capable of assuming any form at will, along with numerous hosts of bears and rākṣasas, gathered together.
देवपुत्रा ऋषिसुता गन्धर्वाणां सुतास्तथा ।
राम क्षयं विदित्वा ते सर्व एव समागताः ॥१८॥
18. devaputrā ṛṣisutā gandharvāṇāṃ sutāstathā ,
rāma kṣayaṃ viditvā te sarva eva samāgatāḥ.
18. deva putrāḥ ṛṣi sutāḥ gandharvāṇām sutāḥ tathā
rāma kṣayam viditvā te sarve eva samāgatāḥ
18. rāma deva putrāḥ ṛṣi sutāḥ tathā gandharvāṇām
sutāḥ te sarve eva kṣayam viditvā samāgatāḥ
18. O Rāma, the sons of gods, the sons of sages, and likewise the sons of gandharvas - all of them, having understood your impending departure (kṣayam), have assembled here.
ते राममभिवाद्याहुः सर्व एव समागताः ।
तवानुगमने राजन् संप्राप्ताः स्म महायशः ॥१९॥
19. te rāmamabhivādyāhuḥ sarva eva samāgatāḥ ,
tavānugamane rājan saṃprāptāḥ sma mahāyaśaḥ.
19. te rāmam abhivādya āhuḥ sarve eva samāgatāḥ
tava anugamane rājan samprāptāḥ sma mahāyaśaḥ
19. rājan mahāyaśaḥ te sarve eva samāgatāḥ rāmam
abhivādya āhuḥ tava anugamane samprāptāḥ sma
19. Having saluted Rāma, all those who had assembled spoke, "O King (rājan), O greatly glorious one (mahāyaśaḥ), we have come here to accompany you."
यदि राम विनास्माभिर्गच्छेस्त्वं पुरुषर्षभ ।
यमदण्डमिवोद्यम्य त्वया स्म विनिपातिताः ॥२०॥
20. yadi rāma vināsmābhirgacchestvaṃ puruṣarṣabha ,
yamadaṇḍamivodyamya tvayā sma vinipātitāḥ.
20. yadi rāma vinā asmābhiḥ gaccheḥ tvam puruṣarṣabha
yamadaṇḍam iva udyamya tvayā sma vinipātitāḥ
20. puruṣarṣabha rāma yadi tvam asmābhiḥ vinā gaccheḥ
tvayā yamadaṇḍam iva udyamya sma vinipātitāḥ
20. O Rāma, best among men, if you were to depart without us, it would be as though we have been struck down by you, as if [you had] raised the staff of Yama (yamadaṇḍa).
एवं तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा ऋष्कवानररक्षसाम् ।
विभीषणमथोवाच मधुरं श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ॥२१॥
21. evaṃ teṣāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā ṛṣkavānararakṣasām ,
vibhīṣaṇamathovāca madhuraṃ ślakṣṇayā girā.
21. evam teṣām vacaḥ śrutvā ṛṣkavānararakṣasām
vibhīṣaṇam atha uvāca madhuram ślakṣṇayā girā
21. evam teṣām ṛṣkavānararakṣasām vacaḥ śrutvā,
atha vibhīṣaṇam madhuram ślakṣṇayā girā uvāca
21. Having thus heard the words of those bears, monkeys, and rākṣasas, he then spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa sweetly with a gentle voice.
यावत् प्रजा धरिष्यन्ति तावत्त्वं वै विभीषण ।
राक्षसेन्द्र महावीर्य लङ्कास्थः स्वं धरिष्यसि ॥२२॥
22. yāvat prajā dhariṣyanti tāvattvaṃ vai vibhīṣaṇa ,
rākṣasendra mahāvīrya laṅkāsthaḥ svaṃ dhariṣyasi.
22. yāvat prajā dhariṣyanti tāvat tvam vai vibhīṣaṇa
rākṣasendra mahāvīrya laṅkāsthaḥ svam dhariṣyasi
22. vibhīṣaṇa rākṣasendra mahāvīrya,
yāvat prajā dhariṣyanti,
tāvat tvam vai laṅkāsthaḥ svam dhariṣyasi
22. O Vibhīṣaṇa, mighty king of rākṣasas, as long as people (prajā) exist, so long shall you, residing in Laṅkā, maintain your own [rule and position].
प्रजाः संरक्ष धर्मेण
नोत्तरं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥२३॥
23. prajāḥ saṃrakṣa dharmeṇa
nottaraṃ vaktumarhasi.

na uttaram vaktum arhasi
23. prajāḥ dharmeṇa saṃrakṣa;
uttaram vaktum na arhasi
23. Protect the people (prajā) in accordance with (your) natural law (dharma); you should not offer any further arguments.
तमेवमुक्त्वा काकुत्स्थो हनूमन्तमथाब्रवीत् ।
जीविते कृतबुद्धिस्त्वं मा प्रतिज्ञां विलोपय ॥२४॥
24. tamevamuktvā kākutstho hanūmantamathābravīt ,
jīvite kṛtabuddhistvaṃ mā pratijñāṃ vilopaya.
24. tam evam uktvā kākutsthaḥ hanūmantam atha abravīt
jīvite kṛtabuddhiḥ tvam mā pratijñām vilopaya
24. kākutsthaḥ tam evam uktvā atha hanūmantam abravīt
tvam jīvite kṛtabuddhiḥ mā pratijñām vilopaya
24. Having spoken to him thus, Rama (the descendant of Kakutstha) then said to Hanuman: 'You, whose resolve is fixed on continued existence, do not disregard your vow.'
मत्कथाः प्रचरिष्यन्ति यावल् लोके हरीश्वर ।
तावत्त्वं धारयन्प्राणान्प्रतिज्ञामनुपालय ॥२५॥
25. matkathāḥ pracariṣyanti yāval loke harīśvara ,
tāvattvaṃ dhārayanprāṇānpratijñāmanupālaya.
25. matkathāḥ pracariṣyanti yāvat loke harīśvara
tāvat tvam dhārayan prāṇān pratijñām anupālaya
25. harīśvara yāvat matkathāḥ loke pracariṣyanti
tāvat tvam prāṇān dhārayan pratijñām anupālaya
25. O Lord of Monkeys, as long as my narratives circulate in the world, so long you should sustain your life and uphold your vow.
तथैवमुक्त्वा काकुत्स्थः सर्वांस्तानृक्षवानरान् ।
मया सार्धं प्रयातेति तदा तान् राघवो ऽब्रवीत् ॥२६॥
26. tathaivamuktvā kākutsthaḥ sarvāṃstānṛkṣavānarān ,
mayā sārdhaṃ prayāteti tadā tān rāghavo'bravīt.
26. tathā evam uktvā kākutsthaḥ sarvān tān ṛkṣavānarān
mayā sārdham prayāta iti tadā tān rāghavaḥ abravīt
26. kākutsthaḥ tathā evam uktvā tadā rāghavaḥ sarvān
tān ṛkṣavānarān abravīt iti mayā sārdham prayāta
26. Having spoken to them in that manner, Rama (the descendant of Kakutstha) then told all those bears and monkeys, 'Proceed along with me!'
