कथयित्वा सुदुःखार्तः सुमन्त्रेण चिरं सह ।
रामे दक्षिण कूलस्थे जगाम स्वगृहं गुहः ॥१॥

1. Guha, deeply afflicted with sorrow, spoke for a long time with Sumantra, and then, while Rama remained on the southern bank, he returned to his own home.
अनुज्ञातः सुमन्त्रो ऽथ योजयित्वा हयोत्तमान् ।
अयोध्यामेव नगरीं प्रययौ गाढदुर्मनाः ॥२॥

2. Then, having received permission, Sumantra, yoking the excellent horses, departed for the city of Ayodhya, his mind deeply troubled.
स वनानि सुगन्धीनि सरितश्च सरांसि च ।
पश्यन्नतिययौ शीघ्रं ग्रामाणि नगराणि च ॥३॥
3. sa vanāni sugandhīni saritaśca sarāṃsi ca ,
paśyannatiyayau śīghraṃ grāmāṇi nagarāṇi ca.

3. He swiftly passed by forests with their fragrance, and rivers, and lakes, as well as villages and cities.
ततः सायाह्नसमये तृतीये ऽहनि सारथिः ।
अयोध्यां समनुप्राप्य निरानन्दां ददर्श ह ॥४॥
4. tataḥ sāyāhnasamaye tṛtīye'hani sārathiḥ ,
ayodhyāṃ samanuprāpya nirānandāṃ dadarśa ha.

4. Then, on the third day, in the evening, the charioteer, having arrived at Ayodhya, saw it to be devoid of joy.
स शून्यामिव निःशब्दां दृष्ट्वा परमदुर्मनाः ।
सुमन्त्रश्चिन्तयामास शोकवेगसमाहतः ॥५॥
5. sa śūnyāmiva niḥśabdāṃ dṛṣṭvā paramadurmanāḥ ,
sumantraścintayāmāsa śokavegasamāhataḥ.

5. Seeing it (Ayodhya) as if empty and silent, Sumantra, deeply distressed and struck by the force of sorrow, began to ponder.
कच्चिन्न सगजा साश्वा सजना सजनाधिपा ।
रामसंतापदुःखेन दग्धा शोकाग्निना पुरी ।
इति चिन्तापरः सूतस्त्वरितः प्रविवेश ह ॥६॥
6. kaccinna sagajā sāśvā sajanā sajanādhipā ,
rāmasaṃtāpaduḥkhena dagdhā śokāgninā purī ,
iti cintāparaḥ sūtastvaritaḥ praviveśa ha.

6. The charioteer (Sumantra), immersed in this worry – 'Surely, the city, with its elephants, horses, people, and its ruler, has not been consumed by the fire of grief (śokāgni), due to the sorrow of Rama's distress?' – swiftly entered.
सुमन्त्रमभियान्तं तं शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ।
क्व राम इति पृच्छन्तः सूतमभ्यद्रवन्नराः ॥७॥
7. sumantramabhiyāntaṃ taṃ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
kva rāma iti pṛcchantaḥ sūtamabhyadravannarāḥ.
7. sumantram अभियान्तम् तम् शतशः अथ सहस्रशः
क्व रामः इति पृच्छन्तः सूतम् अभ्यद्रवन् नराः
7. atha śataśaḥ sahasraśaḥ narāḥ "kva rāmaḥ?" iti
pṛcchantas taṃ abhiyāntam sumantram sūtam abhyadravan
7. Then, hundreds and thousands of people (narāḥ), asking 'Where is Rama (Rāma)?', ran towards Sumantra as he was approaching.
तेषां शशंस गङ्गायामहमापृच्छ्य राघवम् ।
अनुज्ञातो निवृत्तो ऽस्मि धार्मिकेण महात्मना ॥८॥
8. teṣāṃ śaśaṃsa gaṅgāyāmahamāpṛcchya rāghavam ,
anujñāto nivṛtto'smi dhārmikeṇa mahātmanā.
8. teṣām śaśaṃsa gaṅgāyām aham āpṛcchya rāghavam
anujñātaḥ nivṛttaḥ asmi dhārmikeṇa mahātmanā
8. saḥ teṣām śaśaṃsa: "aham gaṅgāyām rāghavam āpṛcchya.
(tatas) dhārmikeṇa mahātmanā anujñātaḥ asmi (iti) nivṛttaḥ asmi.
"
8. To them, he narrated: 'At the Ganga, I took leave of Rama (Rāghava), and I have returned, permitted by that righteous (dharmika) and great-souled (mahātman) individual.'
ते तीर्णा इति विज्ञाय बाष्पपूर्णमुखा जनाः ।
अहो धिगिति निःश्वस्य हा रामेति च चुक्रुशुः ॥९॥
9. te tīrṇā iti vijñāya bāṣpapūrṇamukhā janāḥ ,
aho dhigiti niḥśvasya hā rāmeti ca cukruśuḥ.
9. te tīrṇāḥ iti vijñāya bāṣpapurṇamukhāḥ janāḥ
aho dhik iti niḥśvasya hā rāma iti ca cukruśuḥ
9. janāḥ "te tīrṇāḥ" iti vijñāya,
bāṣpapūrṇamukhāḥ,
"aho dhik!" iti niḥśvasya,
"hā rāma!" iti ca cukruśuḥ.
9. Upon realizing that they (Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana) had crossed (the river), the people (janāḥ), with tear-filled faces, sighed 'Oh, woe!' and cried out 'Oh Rama!'
शुश्राव च वचस्तेषां वृन्दं वृन्दं च तिष्ठताम् ।
हताः स्म खलु ये नेह पश्याम इति राघवम् ॥१०॥
10. śuśrāva ca vacasteṣāṃ vṛndaṃ vṛndaṃ ca tiṣṭhatām ,
hatāḥ sma khalu ye neha paśyāma iti rāghavam.
10. śuśrāva ca vacaḥ teṣām vṛndam vṛndam ca tiṣṭhatām
hatāḥ sma khalu ye na iha paśyāma iti rāghavam
10. vṛndam vṛndam tiṣṭhatām teṣām vacaḥ ca śuśrāva
iti khalu hatāḥ sma ye na iha rāghavam paśyāma
10. He heard the words of those standing group by group, who lamented, "Indeed, we are ruined, for we no longer see Rāghava (Rāma) here!"
दानयज्ञविवाहेषु समाजेषु महत्सु च ।
न द्रक्ष्यामः पुनर्जातु धार्मिकं राममन्तरा ॥११॥
11. dānayajñavivāheṣu samājeṣu mahatsu ca ,
na drakṣyāmaḥ punarjātu dhārmikaṃ rāmamantarā.
11. dānayajñavivāheṣu samājeṣu mahatsu ca na
drakṣyāmaḥ punar jātu dhārmikam rāmam antarā
11. punar jātu dānayajñavivāheṣu mahatsu samājeṣu
ca dhārmikam rāmam antarā na drakṣyāmaḥ
11. We will never again see the righteous Rāma amidst acts of giving (dāna), sacred fire rituals (yajña), and marriages, nor in grand assemblies.
किं समर्थं जनस्यास्य किं प्रियं किं सुखावहम् ।
इति रामेण नगरं पितृवत् परिपालितम् ॥१२॥
12. kiṃ samarthaṃ janasyāsya kiṃ priyaṃ kiṃ sukhāvaham ,
iti rāmeṇa nagaraṃ pitṛvat paripālitam.
12. kim samartham janasya asya kim priyam kim
sukhāvaham iti rāmeṇa nagaram pitṛvat paripālitam
12. rāmeṇa pitṛvat iti kim asya janasya samartham
kim priyam kim sukhāvaham nagaram paripālitam
12. Always considering, 'What is suitable for these citizens? What is pleasing? What brings happiness?' Rāma governed the city like a father.
वातायनगतानां च स्त्रीणामन्वन्तरापणम् ।
रामशोकाभितप्तानां शुश्राव परिदेवनम् ॥१३॥
13. vātāyanagatānāṃ ca strīṇāmanvantarāpaṇam ,
rāmaśokābhitaptānāṃ śuśrāva paridevanam.
13. vātāyanagatānām ca strīṇām anu antarāpaṇam
rāmaśoka abhitaptānām śuśrāva paridevanam
13. vātāyanagatānām ca anu antarāpaṇam rāmaśoka
abhitaptānām strīṇām paridevanam śuśrāva
13. He heard the lamentations of women, who were afflicted with grief (śoka) for Rāma, and were positioned at the windows and along the market streets.
स राजमार्गमध्येन सुमन्त्रः पिहिताननः ।
यत्र राजा दशरथस्तदेवोपययौ गृहम् ॥१४॥
14. sa rājamārgamadhyena sumantraḥ pihitānanaḥ ,
yatra rājā daśarathastadevopayayau gṛham.
14. sa rājamārgamadhyena sumantraḥ pihitānanaḥ
yatra rājā daśarathaḥ tat eva upayayau gṛham
14. sumantraḥ pihitānanaḥ rājamārgamadhyena

14. His face covered in sorrow, Sumantra went through the middle of the royal highway and approached that very palace where King Dasaratha resided.
सो ऽवतीर्य रथाच्छीघ्रं राजवेश्म प्रविश्य च ।
कक्ष्याः सप्ताभिचक्राम महाजनसमाकुलाः ॥१५॥
15. so'vatīrya rathācchīghraṃ rājaveśma praviśya ca ,
kakṣyāḥ saptābhicakrāma mahājanasamākulāḥ.
15. saḥ avatīrya rathāt śīghram rājaveśma praviśya
ca kakṣyāḥ sapta abhicakrāma mahājanasamākulāḥ
15. saḥ śīghram rathāt avatīrya ca rājaveśma praviśya
sapta mahājanasamākulāḥ kakṣyāḥ abhicakrāma
15. Quickly descending from the chariot and entering the royal palace, he traversed the seven courts, which were bustling with many people.
ततो दशरथस्त्रीणां प्रासादेभ्यस्ततस्ततः ।
रामशोकाभितप्तानां मन्दं शुश्राव जल्पितम् ॥१६॥
16. tato daśarathastrīṇāṃ prāsādebhyastatastataḥ ,
rāmaśokābhitaptānāṃ mandaṃ śuśrāva jalpitam.
16. tataḥ daśarathastrīṇām prāsādebhyaḥ tataḥ tataḥ
rāmaśokābhitaptānām mandam śuśrāva jalpitam
16. tataḥ daśarathastrīṇām rāmaśokābhitaptānām
prāsādebhyaḥ tataḥ tataḥ mandam jalpitam śuśrāva
16. Then, from various parts of the palaces, he softly heard the lamentations of Dasaratha's wives, who were distressed by sorrow for Rama.
सह रामेण निर्यातो विना राममिहागतः ।
सूतः किं नाम कौसल्यां शोचन्तीं प्रतिवक्ष्यति ॥१७॥
17. saha rāmeṇa niryāto vinā rāmamihāgataḥ ,
sūtaḥ kiṃ nāma kausalyāṃ śocantīṃ prativakṣyati.
17. saha rāmeṇa niryātaḥ vinā rāmam iha āgataḥ
sūtaḥ kim nāma kausalyām śocantīm prativakṣyati
17. saha rāmeṇa niryātaḥ rāmam vinā iha āgataḥ

17. "Having departed with Rama, and now having returned here without Rama, what indeed will the charioteer (sūta) say in reply to Kausalya, who is lamenting?"
यथा च मन्ये दुर्जीवमेवं न सुकरं ध्रुवम् ।
आच्छिद्य पुत्रे निर्याते कौसल्या यत्र जीवति ॥१८॥
18. yathā ca manye durjīvamevaṃ na sukaraṃ dhruvam ,
ācchidya putre niryāte kausalyā yatra jīvati.
18. yathā ca manye durjīvam evam na sukaram dhruvam
ācchidya putre niryāte kausalyā yatra jīvati
18. manye ca yathā durjīvam evam dhruvam na sukaram
kausalyā yatra putre ācchidya niryāte jīvati
18. And I certainly believe that just as life is difficult, to survive in this manner is surely not easy. Yet, how does Kausalya live, with her son having been torn away and departed?
सत्य रूपं तु तद्वाक्यं राज्ञः स्त्रीणां निशामयन् ।
प्रदीप्तमिव शोकेन विवेश सहसा गृहम् ॥१९॥
19. satya rūpaṃ tu tadvākyaṃ rājñaḥ strīṇāṃ niśāmayan ,
pradīptamiva śokena viveśa sahasā gṛham.
19. satya rūpam tu tat vākyam rājñaḥ strīṇām
niśāmayan pradīptam iva śokena viveśa sahasā gṛham
19. tu rājñaḥ strīṇām satyarūpam tat vākyam niśāmayan
śokena pradīptam iva sahasā gṛham viveśa
19. And perceiving that statement, which was truly (the form of) truth, from the king and the women, he suddenly entered the house as if inflamed by sorrow.
स प्रविश्याष्टमीं कक्ष्यां राजानं दीनमातुलम् ।
पुत्रशोकपरिद्यूनमपश्यत् पाण्डरे गृहे ॥२०॥
20. sa praviśyāṣṭamīṃ kakṣyāṃ rājānaṃ dīnamātulam ,
putraśokaparidyūnamapaśyat pāṇḍare gṛhe.
20. sa praviśya aṣṭamīm kakṣyām rājānam dīnam
ātulam putraśokaparidyūnam apaśyat pāṇḍare gṛhe
20. saḥ aṣṭamīm kakṣyām praviśya dīnam ātulam
putraśokaparidyūnam rājānam pāṇḍare gṛhe apaśyat
20. Having entered the eighth chamber, he saw the king, who was distressed and afflicted, completely overwhelmed by sorrow for his son, within the pale dwelling.
अभिगम्य तमासीनं नरेन्द्रमभिवाद्य च ।
सुमन्त्रो रामवचनं यथोक्तं प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥२१॥
21. abhigamya tamāsīnaṃ narendramabhivādya ca ,
sumantro rāmavacanaṃ yathoktaṃ pratyavedayat.
21. abhigamya tam āsīnam narendram abhivādya ca
sumantraḥ rāmavacanam yathā uktam pratyavedayat
21. sumantraḥ tam āsīnam narendram abhigamya ca
abhivādya yathā uktam rāmavacanam pratyavedayat
21. And having approached that seated king and greeted him, Sumantra reported Rama's message exactly as it had been spoken.
स तूष्णीमेव तच्छ्रुत्वा राजा विभ्रान्त चेतनः ।
मूर्छितो न्यपतद्भूमौ रामशोकाभिपीडितः ॥२२॥
22. sa tūṣṇīmeva tacchrutvā rājā vibhrānta cetanaḥ ,
mūrchito nyapatadbhūmau rāmaśokābhipīḍitaḥ.
22. sa tūṣṇīm eva tat śrutvā rājā vibhrāntacetanaḥ
mūrchitaḥ nyapatat bhūmau rāmaśokābhipīḍitaḥ
22. rājā saḥ tat śrutvā tūṣṇīm eva vibhrāntacetanaḥ
rāmaśokābhipīḍitaḥ mūrchitaḥ bhūmau nyapatat
22. Upon hearing that, the king, his mind utterly bewildered, remained silent. Overcome by grief for Rama, he fainted and fell to the ground.
ततो ऽन्तःपुरमाविद्धं मूर्छिते पृथिवीपतौ ।
उद्धृत्य बाहू चुक्रोश नृपतौ पतिते क्षितौ ॥२३॥
23. tato'ntaḥpuramāviddhaṃ mūrchite pṛthivīpatau ,
uddhṛtya bāhū cukrośa nṛpatau patite kṣitau.
23. tataḥ antaḥpuram āviddham mūrchite pṛthivīpatau
uddhṛtya bāhū cukrośa nṛpatau patite kṣitau
23. tataḥ pṛthivīpatau mūrchite antaḥpuram āviddham.
bāhū uddhṛtya nṛpatau kṣitau patite cukrośa
23. Then, as the king fainted, the inner palace (harem) was thrown into agitation. Raising their arms, [the women] cried out when the king had fallen to the ground.
सुमित्रया तु सहिता कौसल्या पतितं पतिम् ।
उत्थापयामास तदा वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. sumitrayā tu sahitā kausalyā patitaṃ patim ,
utthāpayāmāsa tadā vacanaṃ cedamabravīt.
24. sumitrayā tu sahitā kausalyā patitam patim
utthāpayāmāsa tadā vacanam ca idam abravīt
24. tadā tu sumitrayā sahitā kausalyā patitam

24. Then, Kausalya, accompanied by Sumitra, lifted up her fallen husband and spoke these words.
इमं तस्य महाभाग दूतं दुष्करकारिणः ।
वनवासादनुप्राप्तं कस्मान्न प्रतिभाषसे ॥२५॥
25. imaṃ tasya mahābhāga dūtaṃ duṣkarakāriṇaḥ ,
vanavāsādanuprāptaṃ kasmānna pratibhāṣase.
25. imam tasya mahābhāga dūtam duṣkarakāriṇaḥ
vanavāsāt anuprāptam kasmāt na pratibhāṣase
25. mahābhāga,
kasmāt na tasya duṣkarakāriṇaḥ vanavāsāt anuprāptam imam dūtam pratibhāṣase?
25. O revered one (mahābhāga), why do you not reply to this messenger, who has come back from his forest dwelling (vanavāsa), and who is sent by that great doer of difficult deeds?
अद्येममनयं कृत्वा व्यपत्रपसि राघव ।
उत्तिष्ठ सुकृतं ते ऽस्तु शोके न स्यात् सहायता ॥२६॥
26. adyemamanayaṃ kṛtvā vyapatrapasi rāghava ,
uttiṣṭha sukṛtaṃ te'stu śoke na syāt sahāyatā.
26. adya imam anayam kṛtvā vyapatrapasi rāghava
uttiṣṭha sukṛtam te astu śoke na syāt sahāyatā
26. rāghava adya imam anayam kṛtvā vyapatrapasi
uttiṣṭha te sukṛtam astu śoke sahāyatā na syāt
26. Today, having committed this impropriety, you are ashamed, O Rāghava. Arise! May good fortune be yours. There is no help (or benefit) in sorrow.
देव यस्या भयाद् रामं नानुपृच्छसि सारथिम् ।
नेह तिष्ठति कैकेयी विश्रब्धं प्रतिभाष्यताम् ॥२७॥
27. deva yasyā bhayād rāmaṃ nānupṛcchasi sārathim ,
neha tiṣṭhati kaikeyī viśrabdhaṃ pratibhāṣyatām.
27. deva yasyāḥ bhayāt rāmam na anupṛcchasi sārathim
na iha tiṣṭhati kaikeyī viśrabdham pratibhāṣyatām
27. deva sārathim yasyāḥ bhayāt rāmam na anupṛcchasi
kaikeyī iha na tiṣṭhati viśrabdham pratibhāṣyatām
27. O respected Sir, on account of whose fear you do not inquire about Rāma - that Kaikeyī is not present here. Speak confidently!
सा तथोक्त्वा महाराजं कौसल्या शोकलालसा ।
धरण्यां निपपाताशु बाष्पविप्लुतभाषिणी ॥२८॥
28. sā tathoktvā mahārājaṃ kausalyā śokalālasā ,
dharaṇyāṃ nipapātāśu bāṣpaviplutabhāṣiṇī.
28. sā tathā uktvā mahārājam kausalyā śokalālasā
dharaṇyām nipapāta āśu bāṣpaviplutabhāṣiṇī
28. tathā uktvā sā śokalālasā kausalyā mahārājam
bāṣpaviplutabhāṣiṇī āśu dharaṇyām nipapāta
28. Thus having spoken to the great king, Kausalyā, consumed by sorrow, quickly fell to the ground, her voice choked and trembling with tears.
एवं विलपतीं दृष्ट्वा कौसल्यां पतितां भुवि ।
पतिं चावेक्ष्य ताः सर्वाः सस्वरं रुरुदुः स्त्रियः ॥२९॥
29. evaṃ vilapatīṃ dṛṣṭvā kausalyāṃ patitāṃ bhuvi ,
patiṃ cāvekṣya tāḥ sarvāḥ sasvaraṃ ruruduḥ striyaḥ.
29. evam vilapatīm dṛṣṭvā kausalyām patitām bhuvi patim
ca āvekṣya tāḥ sarvāḥ sasvaram ruruduḥ striyaḥ
29. evam vilapatīm bhuvi patitām kausalyām dṛṣṭvā ca
patim āvekṣya tāḥ sarvāḥ striyaḥ sasvaram ruruduḥ
29. Upon seeing Kausalyā thus lamenting and fallen on the ground, and also having beheld the King (her husband), all those women wept loudly.
ततस्तमन्तःपुरनादमुत्थितं समीक्ष्य वृद्धास्तरुणाश्च मानवाः ।
स्त्रियश्च सर्वा रुरुदुः समन्ततः पुरं तदासीत् पुनरेव संकुलम् ॥३०॥
30. tatastamantaḥpuranādamutthitaṃ samīkṣya vṛddhāstaruṇāśca mānavāḥ ,
striyaśca sarvā ruruduḥ samantataḥ puraṃ tadāsīt punareva saṃkulam.
30. tataḥ tam antaḥpuranādam utthitam
samīkṣya vṛddhāḥ taruṇāḥ ca mānavāḥ
striyaḥ ca sarvāḥ ruruduḥ samantataḥ
puram tadā āsīt punar eva saṃkulam
30. tataḥ,

vṛddhāḥ,
taruṇāḥ ca,
mānavāḥ,
sarvāḥ striyaḥ ca samantataḥ ruruduḥ.
tadā puram punar eva saṃkulam āsīt.
