Then, after he had killed Valin and consecrated Sugriva, Rama, dwelling on the peak of Mount Malyavat, spoke to Lakshmana.
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तः समयो ऽद्य जलागमः ।
संपश्य त्वं नभो मेघैः संवृतं गिरिसंनिभैः ॥२॥

This is that very time, the season of the water's arrival (jalāgama) has now come. Behold the sky, covered by clouds resembling mountains.
नव मास धृतं गर्भं भास्कारस्य गभस्तिभिः ।

The sky, having conceived (held an embryo) for nine months through the sun's rays, and having absorbed the essence of the oceans, gives birth to the life-giving elixir (rasāyanam).

It is possible to climb into the sky, using the rows of clouds as stairs, and to adorn the sun with garlands made of kuṭaja and arjuna flowers.
संध्यारागोत्थितैस्ताम्रैरन्तेष्वधिकपाण्डुरैः ।
स्निग्धैरभ्रपटच्छदैर्बद्धव्रणमिवाम्बरम् ॥५॥

The sky, with its smooth, cloth-like clouds, which are coppery due to the twilight glow and very pale at their edges, appears as if it has a bandaged wound.
मन्दमारुतनिःश्वासं संध्याचन्दनरञ्जितम् ।
आपाण्डुजलदं भाति कामातुरमिवाम्बरम् ॥६॥

The sky appears to be love-sick, with the gentle breeze as its breath, colored by the twilight's sandalwood-like hue, and bearing pale clouds.
एषा धर्मपरिक्लिष्टा नववारिपरिप्लुता ।
सीतेव शोकसंतप्ता मही बाष्पं विमुञ्चति ॥७॥

This earth, afflicted in her intrinsic nature (dharma) and inundated by fresh waters, sheds tears (vapor) like Sītā tormented by sorrow.

The winds, released from the heart of the clouds, are pleasantly cool like water lilies and fragrant with the scent of ketaki flowers; they are so refreshing that one could (metaphorically) drink them with cupped hands.

This mountain, adorned with flowering Arjuna trees and perfumed by ketaki flowers, is being consecrated by the streams of rain, just as Sugrīva, with his enemies pacified, was consecrated.

The mountains, draped in dark clouds like deer skins, adorned with streams of rain as their sacred threads, and with their caves echoing with the winds, appear like Vedic students engaged in study or recitation.

The sky (ambaram) appears as if struck by golden whips, or by lightning flashes, with a rumbling sound within, as if it were feeling pain.
नीलमेघाश्रिता विद्युत् स्फुरन्ती प्रतिभाति मे ।

The lightning, which is flickering and dwelling within the dark clouds, appears to me like the suffering (tapasvinī) Vaidehī (Sītā) trembling in Rāvaṇa's embrace.
इमास्ता मन्मथवतां हिताः प्रतिहता दिशः ।
अनुलिप्ता इव घनैर्नष्टग्रहनिशाकराः ॥१३॥

These directions, usually favorable to those afflicted by passion (manmatha), are now hostile and obstructed. They appear as if smeared by dense clouds, with their planets and moon having vanished.

O Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), behold the Kutaja flowers scattered here and there on the mountain slopes. They are covered in mist, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the rainy season, blooming, and standing there, yet they only ignite passion in me who is overcome by grief.
रजः प्रशान्तं सहिमो ऽद्य वायुर्निदाघदोषप्रसराः प्रशान्ताः ।
स्थिता हि यात्रा वसुधाधिपानां प्रवासिनो यान्ति नराः स्वदेशान् ॥१५॥

The dust has settled, and the wind is now chilly. The widespread discomforts of the summer season have abated. Indeed, the expeditions of rulers have come to a halt, and travelers are returning to their own countries.
संप्रस्थिता मानसवासलुब्धाः प्रियान्विताः संप्रति चक्रवाकः ।
अभीक्ष्णवर्षोदकविक्षतेषु यानानि मार्गेषु न संपतन्ति ॥१६॥

16.
Now, the chakravāka birds, accompanied by their mates and eager to dwell in Lake Manasa, have departed. Vehicles cannot proceed smoothly on the roads, which are damaged by frequent rainwater.
क्व चित् प्रकाशं क्व चिदप्रकाशं नभः प्रकीर्णाम्बुधरं विभाति ।

The sky appears, sometimes clear and sometimes dark, adorned with scattered clouds. Here and there, its form, confined by mountains, resembles that of a calm great ocean.
व्यामिश्रितं सर्जकदम्बपुष्पैर्नवं जलं पर्वतधातुताम्रम् ।
मयूरकेकाभिरनुप्रयातं शैलापगाः शीघ्रतरं वहन्ति ॥१८॥

The mountain rivers carry their fresh waters, mingled with sarja and kadamba flowers, reddened by mountain minerals, and accompanied by the cries of peacocks, flowing very swiftly.
रसाकुलं षट्पदसंनिकाशं प्रभुज्यते जम्बुफलं प्रकामम् ।
अनेकवर्णं पवनावधूतं भूमौ पतत्याम्रफलं विपक्वम् ॥१९॥

19. rasākulaṃ ṣaṭpadasaṃnikāśaṃ prabhujyate jambuphalaṃ prakāmam ,

rasa-ākulam ṣaṭpada-saṃnikāśam

The juicy jambu fruit, resembling the dark color of bees, is amply enjoyed. A fully ripe, multi-colored mango fruit, shaken by the wind, falls to the ground.

The clouds, bearing lightning as banners, adorned with lines of cranes, and resembling the forms of great mountain peaks, roar with loud sounds, just like rutting lordly elephants standing in battle formation.

A line of cranes, delighting in and flying around the clouds, appears splendid. It shines like a long garland of excellent white lotuses, swayed by the wind, in the adorned sky.

Sleep slowly approaches Keśava. A river swiftly approaches the ocean. A delighted crane approaches the cloud. A desirous beloved woman approaches her beloved.

The edges of the forests have become vibrant with the beautiful dancing of peacocks. Kadamba trees are now adorned with their branches. Bulls have become equally eager among the cows, and the earth has become delightful with its crops and forests.

Rivers flow, clouds rain, intoxicated elephants roar, forest edges glow, those longing for their beloveds ponder, peacocks dance, and monkeys find relief.

The great elephants, highly delighted and joyful by smelling the fragrance of Ketaka flowers near the forest springs, and agitated by the sound of waterfalls, roar loudly along with the proud peacocks.

The bees, being struck by the heavy downpour and hanging on the Kadamba branches, slowly abandon their intoxication, which they had briefly acquired by immersing themselves in flower nectar.

The branches of the rose-apple (jambu) trees, laden with abundant, juicy fruits resembling heaps of charcoal powder, shine brilliantly, appearing as if they are hidden by swarms of bees.

An intoxicated (in musth) lordly elephant, who had set out following the path through the mountain forests, upon hearing the roar of the clouds, mistook it for a rival elephant and, eager for battle, turned back.

Thirsty birds, with their discolored feathers, joyfully drink the very clear, pearl-like water that has fallen and settled in the leaf-cups, a gift from Indra, the lord of gods.

Blue clouds, full of fresh water, appear prominent and attached amidst other blue clouds. Similarly, deeply rooted mountains, scarred by forest fires, appear as if burned by forest fires among other mountains (also affected by forest fires).

Elephants are in rut, bulls are joyful, and lions (mṛgendrāḥ) are very much at rest in the forests. Mountains (nagendrāḥ) are charming, and (other) mountains are secluded. The king of the gods, Indra, is sporting with the rain-bearing clouds.

Surely, Bharata, the chief of the treasury, having concluded his activities (karma) and amassed resources, has thus entered the rainy season.

Surely, the current of the river Sarayū, now being filled with water, is increasing. It sounds like the roar of Ayodhya itself, coming to meet me as I approach.

Sugriva, having conquered his foes and reunited with his wife, is now established in his vast kingdom, and he enjoys these rainy seasons with all their abundant virtues.

But I, with my wife abducted and fallen from my vast kingdom, am sinking, Lakshmana, like a waterlogged riverbank.

रावणश्च महाञ् शत्रुरपारं प्रतिभाति मे ॥३९॥

My grief is immense, and the monsoon season makes travel exceedingly difficult. Furthermore, Ravana appears to me as a great and insurmountable foe.

Despite perceiving this impossibility of travel and the exceedingly difficult paths, and with Sugriva having bowed down in respect, nothing was said by me.

Moreover, although he (Sugriva) is greatly distressed and has been reunited with his wives after a long separation, I do not wish to speak to him (the monkey king) because of the supreme importance of my own purpose.

Indeed, Sugriva himself, after resting and recognizing that the appropriate time has arrived, will surely understand his obligation (upakāra). There is no doubt about this.

Therefore, O auspicious one, I remain awaiting the opportune time, anticipating the favor of Sugriva and the rivers.

Indeed, a brave person is bound to a return favor by a good deed. An ungrateful individual, who does not reciprocate, hurts the heart of noble persons.
अथैवमुक्तः प्रणिधाय लक्ष्मणः कृताञ्जलिस्तत् प्रतिपूज्य भाषितम् ।

Then, thus addressed, Lakshmana, having paid attention and with folded hands, honored that speech. He then spoke to Rama, whose appearance was very charming, displaying his own auspicious view (ātman).
यथोक्तमेतत्तव सर्वमीप्सितं नरेन्द्र कर्ता नचिराद्धरीश्वरः ।
शरत्प्रतीक्षः क्षमतामिमं भवाञ्जलप्रपातं रिपुनिग्रहे धृतः ॥४६॥

O King (narendra), this entire desired outcome, as spoken, the lord of monkeys (harīśvara) will accomplish without delay. You (bhavān), resolute in subduing enemies, should patiently endure this season of heavy rainfall, awaiting autumn.
