However, the chief of the monkeys (Hanumān), having skillfully moved from the aerial chariot to the rampart, became swift like lightning amidst the clouds.
संपरिक्रम्य हनुमान् रावणस्य निवेशनान् ।
अदृष्ट्वा जानकीं सीतामब्रवीद्वचनं कपिः ॥२॥

Having thoroughly searched Ravana's dwellings and not having found Sita, the daughter of Janaka, Hanuman, the monkey (kapi), spoke these words.
भूयिष्ठं लोडिता लङ्का रामस्य चरता प्रियम् ।
न हि पश्यामि वैदेहीं सीतां सर्वाङ्गशोभनाम् ॥३॥
न हि पश्यामि वैदेहीं सीतां सर्वाङ्गशोभनाम् ॥३॥
3. bhūyiṣṭhaṃ loḍitā laṅkā rāmasya caratā priyam ,
na hi paśyāmi vaidehīṃ sītāṃ sarvāṅgaśobhanām.

Lanka has been extensively searched by me, who am performing this dear service for Rama. Yet, I certainly do not see Sita, the princess of Videha (vaidehī), who is beautiful in every limb.
पल्वलानि तटाकानि सरांसि सरितस्तथा ।
नद्यो ऽनूपवनान्ताश्च दुर्गाश्च धरणीधराः ।
लोडिता वसुधा सर्वा न च पश्यामि जानकीम् ॥४॥

Ponds, lakes, large lakes, and rivers, as well as greater rivers, marshy forest edges, difficult terrains, and mountains - the entire earth has been searched. Yet, I do not see Janaki (jānakī).
इह संपातिना सीता रावणस्य निवेशने ।
आख्याता गृध्रराजेन न च पश्यामि तामहम् ॥५॥

Here, Sita was indicated by Sampati, the king of vultures (gṛdhrarāja), to be in Ravana's dwelling. Yet, I myself do not see her.
किं नु सीताथ वैदेही मैथिली जनकात्मजा ।
उपतिष्ठेत विवशा रावणं दुष्टचारिणम् ॥६॥

6. kiṃ nu sītātha vaidehī maithilī janakātmajā ,

How could Sītā – Vaidehī, Maithilī, Janakātmajā – ever helplessly submit to Rāvaṇa, the one with evil conduct?
क्षिप्रमुत्पततो मन्ये सीतामादाय रक्षसः ।
बिभ्यतो रामबाणानामन्तरा पतिता भवेत् ॥७॥

7. kṣipramutpatato manye sītāmādāya rakṣasaḥ ,

I believe that the demon, who quickly flew up carrying Sītā, must have fallen midway, terrified of Rāma's arrows.
अथ वा ह्रियमाणायाः पथि सिद्धनिषेविते ।
मन्ये पतितमार्याया हृदयं प्रेक्ष्य सागरम् ॥८॥

Or perhaps, I think that as the noble lady (āryā) was being carried away on the path frequented by perfected beings (siddha), her heart fell out upon seeing the ocean.
रावणस्योरुवेगेन भुजाभ्यां पीडितेन च ।
तया मन्ये विशालाक्ष्या त्यक्तं जीवितमार्यया ॥९॥

9. rāvaṇasyoruvegena bhujābhyāṃ pīḍitena ca ,

I believe that her life (jīvita) was abandoned by that noble (āryā), wide-eyed lady, due to being crushed by Rāvaṇa's powerful arms.
उपर्युपरि वा नूनं सागरं क्रमतस्तदा ।
विवेष्टमाना पतिता समुद्रे जनकात्मजा ॥१०॥

10. uparyupari vā nūnaṃ sāgaraṃ kramatastadā ,
viveṣṭamānā patitā samudre janakātmajā.

Or indeed, Janaka's daughter (Sītā), while moving high above the ocean, would have surely fallen, writhing, into the sea.
आहो क्षुद्रेण चानेन रक्षन्ती शीलमात्मनः ।
अबन्धुर्भक्षिता सीता रावणेन तपस्विनी ॥११॥

11. āho kṣudreṇa cānena rakṣantī śīlamātmanaḥ ,
abandhurbhakṣitā sītā rāvaṇena tapasvinī.

Oh! Perhaps this pitiable (tapasvinī) Sītā, without kinsmen and protecting her own character (śīlam), has been devoured by this vile (kṣudra) Rāvaṇa.
अथ वा राक्षसेन्द्रस्य पत्नीभिरसितेक्षणा ।
अदुष्टा दुष्टभावाभिर्भक्षिता सा भविष्यति ॥१२॥

12. atha vā rākṣasendrasya patnībhirasitekṣaṇā ,
aduṣṭā duṣṭabhāvābhirbhakṣitā sā bhaviṣyati.

Or alternatively, she, the dark-eyed and innocent (aduṣṭā) one, will have been devoured by the wickedly intentioned (duṣṭabhāva) wives of the king of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa).

The miserable (kṛpaṇā) Sītā, meditating on Rāma's face – which is like the full moon and has eyes resembling lotus petals – has met her death.
हा राम लक्ष्मणेत्येव हायोध्येति च मैथिली ।
विलप्य बहु वैदेही न्यस्तदेहा भविष्यति ॥१४॥

Calling out "Oh Rāma! Oh Lakṣmaṇa!" and "Oh Ayodhyā!" – Maithilī (Sītā), having lamented profusely, will abandon her body.

Alternatively, I believe she is being held in Rāvaṇa's residence. Surely, she must be lamenting softly there, like a starling confined to a cage.
जनकस्य कुले जाता रामपत्नी सुमध्यमा ।
कथमुत्पलपत्राक्षी रावणस्य वशं व्रजेत् ॥१६॥

16. janakasya kule jātā rāmapatnī sumadhyamā ,
kathamutpalapatrākṣī rāvaṇasya vaśaṃ vrajet.

How could she, born into Janaka's family, the slender-waisted wife of Rāma, whose eyes resemble lotus petals, ever fall under Rāvaṇa's control?
विनष्टा वा प्रनष्टा वा मृता वा जनकात्मजा ।
रामस्य प्रियभार्यस्य न निवेदयितुं क्षमम् ॥१७॥

17. vinaṣṭā vā pranaṣṭā vā mṛtā vā janakātmajā ,

Whether Janaka's daughter (Sītā) is lost, completely destroyed, or dead, it is not appropriate to report such news to Rāma, whose beloved wife she is.
निवेद्यमाने दोषः स्याद्दोषः स्यादनिवेदने ।
कथं नु खलु कर्तव्यं विषमं प्रतिभाति मे ॥१८॥

18. nivedyamāne doṣaḥ syāddoṣaḥ syādanivedane ,
kathaṃ nu khalu kartavyaṃ viṣamaṃ pratibhāti me.

A fault would arise if I report it, and a fault would arise if I do not report it. How indeed should this be done? The situation seems perplexing to me.
अस्मिन्नेवंगते कर्ये प्राप्तकालं क्षमं च किम् ।
भवेदिति मतिं भूयो हनुमान्प्रविचारयन् ॥१९॥

19. asminnevaṃgate karye prāptakālaṃ kṣamaṃ ca kim ,
bhavediti matiṃ bhūyo hanumānpravicārayan.

What would be timely and suitable in this matter, which has thus reached this state? Reflecting in this way, Hanumān deliberated further.
यदि सीतामदृष्ट्वाहं वानरेन्द्रपुरीमितः ।
गमिष्यामि ततः को मे पुरुषार्थो भविष्यति ॥२०॥

20. yadi sītāmadṛṣṭvāhaṃ vānarendrapurīmitaḥ ,
gamiṣyāmi tataḥ ko me puruṣārtho bhaviṣyati.

yadi sītām adṛṣṭvā ahaṃ vānarendrapurīm itaḥ

If I return from here to the city of the vānara king without seeing Sītā, then what will be my ultimate human objective (puruṣārtha)?
ममेदं लङ्घनं व्यर्थं सागरस्य भविष्यति ।
प्रवेशश्चिव लङ्काया राक्षसानां च दर्शनम् ॥२१॥

21. mamedaṃ laṅghanaṃ vyarthaṃ sāgarasya bhaviṣyati ,
praveśaściva laṅkāyā rākṣasānāṃ ca darśanam.

mama idaṃ laṅghanaṃ vyarthaṃ sāgarasya bhaviṣyati

This crossing of the ocean by me will be in vain, as will my entry into Laṅkā and the sight of the rākṣasas.
किं वा वक्ष्यति सुग्रीवो हरयो व समागताः ।
किष्किन्धां समनुप्राप्तौ तौ वा दशरथात्मजौ ॥२२॥

What will Sugrīva say, or what will the assembled monkeys say, when those two sons of Daśaratha have arrived in Kiṣkindhā?
गत्वा तु यदि काकुत्स्थं वक्ष्यामि परमप्रियम् ।
न दृष्टेति मया सीता ततस्त्यक्ष्यन्ति जीवितम् ॥२३॥

If, upon returning, I tell the highly beloved son of Kakutstha (Rāma) that Sītā has not been seen by me, then they (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa) will surely abandon their lives.

Having heard such harsh, dreadful, cruel, sharp, and sense-tormenting bad words concerning Sītā, he (Rāma) will cease to exist.

Having seen him (Rāma) fallen into such distress, with his mind ready to depart (i.e., on the verge of death), the deeply devoted and intelligent Lakṣmaṇa will also cease to exist.

When Bharata hears that his two brothers have perished, he too will die. And when Shatrughna sees Bharata dead, he will not survive.

After seeing their sons dead, the mothers too will not survive. This applies to Kausalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi, without a doubt.

Sugriva, the grateful (kṛtajña) and truthful (satyasaṃdha) lord of the monkeys, upon seeing Rama thus departed, then many will abandon their lives.

Afflicted by their lord's misfortune, they, along with their sons, wives, and ministers, will gather and fall from mountain peaks and into perilous places.

I believe that a terrible wailing will ensue after my departure, along with the ruin of the Ikṣvāku lineage and, indeed, of the forest-dwelling monkeys.

Therefore, I will certainly not go to the city of Kiṣkindhā from this place. Indeed, I will not be able to see Sugrīva without Maithilī.

If I do not go and remain here, those two great warriors, righteous in their souls (ātman) according to natural law (dharma), and the high-minded Vānaras, will be sustained only by hope.

Without seeing Janaka's daughter, I will become a self-controlled forest hermit (vānaprastha), gathering my food with my hands or directly with my mouth, and residing at the foot of a tree.

Crows and carnivorous animals will devour the body of one who is (just) seated [for a fast], or of one who properly performs an ascetic observance (liṅgin).

My conviction is that this kind of departure (niryāṇa) has also been approved by sages (ṛṣi). If I do not see Janaki, I will properly enter the waters.

This long, long night of my not seeing Sītā, which was well-founded, auspicious, a garland of fame, and glorious, has now been shattered.
तापसो वा भविष्यामि नियतो वृक्षमूलिकः ।
नेतः प्रतिगमिष्यामि तामदृष्ट्वासितेक्षणाम् ॥४५॥

Alternatively, I will become an ascetic (tāpasa), self-controlled, dwelling at the foot of a tree (vṛkṣamūlika). I will not return from here without seeing that dark-eyed (asitekṣaṇā) one.
यदीतः प्रतिगच्छामि सीतामनधिगम्य ताम् ।

If I return from this place without having found Sītā, then Aṅgada, along with all the other monkeys, will not survive.
विनाशे बहवो दोषा जीवन्प्राप्नोति भद्रकम् ।
तस्मात् प्राणान्धरिष्यामि ध्रुवो जीवति संगमः ॥४७॥

47.
There are many drawbacks in perishing; while living, one obtains auspicious things. Therefore, I will preserve my life, for reunion (saṃgama) is certain if one remains alive.
एवं बहुविधं दुःखं मनसा धारयन्मुहुः ।
नाध्यगच्छत्तदा पारं शोकस्य कपिकुञ्जरः ॥४८॥

Thus, repeatedly contemplating this multi-faceted sorrow (duḥkha) in his mind, the foremost of monkeys (Hanuman) could not then reach the other shore of his grief (śoka).
रावणं वा वधिष्यामि दशग्रीवं महाबलम् ।
काममस्तु हृता सीता प्रत्याचीर्णं भविष्यति ॥४९॥

Or I will kill Rāvaṇa, the mighty (mahābala) ten-necked (Daśagrīva) one. Even if Sītā has been taken (hṛtā), retribution (pratyācīrṇa) will surely occur.
अथ वैनं समुत्क्षिप्य उपर्युपरि सागरम् ।
रामायोपहरिष्यामि पशुं पशुपतेरिव ॥५०॥

Then, having lifted her (Sītā) high above the ocean, I will present her to Rāma, just as an animal is offered to Paśupati.

Having thus become filled with worry because he had not found that Sītā, the monkey (vānanra), his spirit (ātman) enveloped in deep contemplation (dhyāna) and sorrow, continued to ponder.
यावत् सीतां न पश्यामि रामपत्नीं यशस्विनीम् ।
तावदेतां पुरीं लङ्कां विचिनोमि पुनः पुनः ॥५२॥

As long as I do not see Sītā, the glorious wife of Rāma, I will search this city of Laṅkā again and again.
संपाति वचनाच्चापि रामं यद्यानयाम्यहम् ।
अपश्यन् राघवो भार्यां निर्दहेत् सर्ववानरान् ॥५३॥

53. saṃpāti vacanāccāpi rāmaṃ yadyānayāmyaham ,

And even if I were to bring Rāma here, based on Sampāti's instructions, Rāghava (Rāma), upon not finding his wife, would surely incinerate all the monkeys.
इहैव नियताहारो वत्स्यामि नियतेन्द्रियः ।
न मत्कृते विनश्येयुः सर्वे ते नरवानराः ॥५४॥

54. ihaiva niyatāhāro vatsyāmi niyatendriyaḥ ,

I will stay right here, observing a regulated diet and controlling my senses. Let not all those men and monkeys perish on my account.
अशोकवनिका चापि महतीयं महाद्रुमा ।
इमामभिगमिष्यामि न हीयं विचिता मया ॥५५॥

I will go to this large Aśoka grove, which has mighty trees, for indeed, it has not yet been searched by me.

नमस्कृत्वा गमिष्यामि रक्षसां शोकवर्धनः ॥५६॥

Having saluted the Vasus, Rudras, Adityas, as well as the two Aśvins and the Maruts, I will proceed, [acting as] one who increases the sorrow of the Rākṣasas.

संप्रदास्यामि रामाया यथासिद्धिं तपस्विने ॥५७॥

Having indeed vanquished the Rākṣasas, I will deliver the princess, the joy of the Ikṣvāku lineage, to Rāma, the ascetic, as [I have achieved] success.

Having pondered for a moment, his senses entangled by worry, the mighty-armed Hanuman, son of Maruta, stood up.

Salutations to Rama, along with Lakshmana! And salutations to that goddess, Janaka's daughter (Sītā)! Salutations to Rudra, Indra, Yama, and Anila! Salutations to the moon, the sun, and the hosts of Maruts!

Having offered salutations to them and to Sugriva, Maruta's son (Hanuman) surveyed all directions towards the Ashoka grove.

Having first mentally proceeded to the beautiful Ashoka grove, that Vanara, the son of Maruta (Hanuman), then deeply pondered the next step.

Indeed, the Ashoka grove will certainly be abundant with demons and teeming with trees. This Ashoka grove, endowed with all auspicious characteristics, must be carefully considered.
रक्षिणश्चात्र विहिता नूनं रक्षन्ति पादपान् ।
भगवानपि सर्वात्मा नातिक्षोभं प्रवायति ॥६३॥

63. rakṣiṇaścātra vihitā nūnaṃ rakṣanti pādapān ,
bhagavānapi sarvātmā nātikṣobhaṃ pravāyati.

And the guards appointed here certainly protect the trees. Even the revered one, the soul of all (sarvātmā), does not cause excessive agitation.
संक्षिप्तो ऽयं मयात्मा च रामार्थे रावणस्य च ।
सिद्धिं मे संविधास्यन्ति देवाः सर्षिगणास्त्विह ॥६४॥

saṃkṣiptaḥ ayam mayā ātmā ca rāmārthe rāvaṇasya ca

64.
My very self (ātman) has been concisely prepared by me for the sake of Rāma and in relation to Rāvaṇa. The gods, along with the hosts of sages, will surely grant me success here.

May the revered self-existent Brahmā, and indeed all the gods, grant me success. And may Agni, and Vāyu, and Puruhūta (Indra), the wielder of the thunderbolt, also grant me success.

All beings, and indeed he who is the lord of beings, and those other unseen ones who traverse the path, will give to me.

When, indeed, shall I behold that noble face with its elevated nose, white teeth, unblemished purity, and pure smile, possessing eyes like lotus petals and an appearance like the serene lord of stars?
क्षुद्रेण पापेन नृशंसकर्मणा सुदारुणालांकृतवेषधारिणा ।
बलाभिभूता अबला तपस्विनी कथं नु मे दृष्टपथे ऽद्य सा भवेत् ॥६९॥
