एवमुक्त्वा तु परुषं मारीचो रावणं ततः ।
गच्छावेत्यब्रवीद्दीनो भयाद् रात्रिंचरप्रभोः ॥१॥
1. evamuktvā tu paruṣaṃ mārīco rāvaṇaṃ tataḥ ,

1. Having thus spoken harshly to Ravana, Maricha, distressed by his fear of the lord of the night-wanderers (rakṣasas), then said, "Let us go."
दृष्टश्चाहं पुनस्तेन शरचापासिधारिणा ।
मद्वधोद्यतशस्त्रेण विनष्टं जीवितं च मे ॥२॥
2. dṛṣṭaścāhaṃ punastena śaracāpāsidhāriṇā ,
madvadhodyataśastreṇa vinaṣṭaṃ jīvitaṃ ca me.
2. dṛṣṭaḥ ca aham punaḥ tena śaracāpāsidhāriṇā
madvadhodyataśastreṇa vinaṣṭam jīvitam ca me

2. And I was seen again by him, who was wielding arrows, a bow, and a sword. With his weapon raised to slay me, my life was truly lost.
किं तु कर्तुं मया शक्यमेवं त्वयि दुरात्मनि ।
एष गच्छाम्यहं तात स्वस्ति ते ऽस्तु निशाचर ॥३॥
3. kiṃ tu kartuṃ mayā śakyamevaṃ tvayi durātmani ,
eṣa gacchāmyahaṃ tāta svasti te'stu niśācara.
3. kim tu kartum mayā śakyam evam tvayi durātmani
eṣaḥ gacchāmi aham tāta svasti te astu niśācara

3. But what can I possibly do to you, a wicked soul (durātman)? Now I depart, dear one; may you fare well, O night-roamer.
प्रहृष्टस्त्वभवत्तेन वचनेन स राक्षसः ।
परिष्वज्य सुसंश्लिष्टमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. prahṛṣṭastvabhavattena vacanena sa rākṣasaḥ ,
pariṣvajya susaṃśliṣṭamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
4. prahṛṣṭaḥ tu abhavat tena vacanena saḥ rākṣasaḥ
pariṣvajya susaṃśliṣṭam idam vacanam abravīt

4. That demon (rākṣasa) became greatly pleased by his words. Embracing him very closely, he then spoke these words:
एतच्छौण्डीर्ययुक्तं ते मच्छन्दादिव भाषितम् ।
इदानीमसि मारीचः पूर्वमन्यो निशाचरः ॥५॥
5. etacchauṇḍīryayuktaṃ te macchandādiva bhāṣitam ,
idānīmasi mārīcaḥ pūrvamanyo niśācaraḥ.
5. etat śauṇḍīryayuktam te matchandāt iva bhāṣitam
idānīm asi marīcaḥ pūrvam anyaḥ niśācaraḥ
5. etat śauṇḍīryayuktam te matchandāt iva bhāṣitam

5. These words, full of courage and pride, were spoken by you as if they were my own command. Now you are truly Marīca; previously, you were just another night-roaming demon.
आरुह्यतामयं शीघ्रं खगो रत्नविभूषितः ।
मया सह रथो युक्तः पिशाचवदनैः खरैः ॥६॥
6. āruhyatāmayaṃ śīghraṃ khago ratnavibhūṣitaḥ ,
mayā saha ratho yuktaḥ piśācavadanaiḥ kharaiḥ.
6. āruhyatām ayam śīghram khagaḥ ratnavibhūṣitaḥ
mayā saha rathaḥ yuktaḥ piśācavadanaiḥ kharaiḥ
6. ayam ratnavibhūṣitaḥ khagaḥ śīghram āruhyatām

6. Let this jewel-adorned aerial vehicle be quickly mounted. A chariot, yoked with goblin-faced donkeys, has been prepared by me.
ततो रावणमारीचौ विमानमिव तं रथम् ।
आरुह्य ययतुः शीघ्रं तस्मादाश्रममण्डलात् ॥७॥
7. tato rāvaṇamārīcau vimānamiva taṃ ratham ,
āruhya yayatuḥ śīghraṃ tasmādāśramamaṇḍalāt.
7. tataḥ rāvaṇamārīcau vimānam iva tam ratham
āruhya yayatuḥ śīghram tasmāt āśramamaṇḍalāt

7. Then Rāvaṇa and Marīca, having ascended that chariot - which was like an aerial car - quickly departed from that hermitage region.
तथैव तत्र पश्यन्तौ पत्तनानि वनानि च ।
गिरींश्च सरितः सर्वा राष्ट्राणि नगराणि च ॥८॥
8. tathaiva tatra paśyantau pattanāni vanāni ca ,
girīṃśca saritaḥ sarvā rāṣṭrāṇi nagarāṇi ca.

8. And similarly, there, observing, they saw cities, forests, and mountains; and all the rivers, countries, and towns.
समेत्य दण्डकारण्यं राघवस्याश्रमं ततः ।
ददर्श सहमरीचो रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ॥९॥
9. sametya daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ rāghavasyāśramaṃ tataḥ ,
dadarśa sahamarīco rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ.

9. Then Rāvaṇa, the lord of rākṣasas, accompanied by Marīca, having come to the Daṇḍaka forest, saw Rāghava's hermitage.
अवतीर्य रथात्तस्मात्ततः काञ्चनभूषणात् ।
हस्ते गृहीत्वा मारीचं रावणो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१०॥
10. avatīrya rathāttasmāttataḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇāt ,
haste gṛhītvā mārīcaṃ rāvaṇo vākyamabravīt.
10. avatīrya rathāt tasmāt tataḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇāt
haste gṛhītvā mārīcam rāvaṇaḥ vākyam abravīt

10. Then Rāvaṇa, having dismounted from that gold-adorned chariot and taking Mārīca by the hand, spoke these words.
एतद् रामाश्रमपदं दृश्यते कदलीवृतम् ।
क्रियतां तत् सखे शीघ्रं यदर्थं वयमागताः ॥११॥
11. etad rāmāśramapadaṃ dṛśyate kadalīvṛtam ,
kriyatāṃ tat sakhe śīghraṃ yadarthaṃ vayamāgatāḥ.
11. etat rāmāśramapadam dṛśyate kadalīvṛtam kriyatām
tat sakhe śīghram yadartham vayam āgatāḥ
11. sakhe etat kadalīvṛtam rāmāśramapadam dṛśyate

11. "Friend, this is Rāma's hermitage (āśrama), visible and surrounded by plantain trees. Let that for which we have come be accomplished quickly!"
स रावणवचः श्रुत्वा मारीचो राक्षसस्तदा ।
मृगो भूत्वाश्रमद्वारि रामस्य विचचार ह ॥१२॥
12. sa rāvaṇavacaḥ śrutvā mārīco rākṣasastadā ,
mṛgo bhūtvāśramadvāri rāmasya vicacāra ha.
12. saḥ rāvaṇavacaḥ śrutvā mārīcaḥ rākṣasaḥ tadā
mṛgaḥ bhūtvā āśramadvāri rāmasya vicacāra ha
12. tadā saḥ rākṣasaḥ mārīcaḥ rāvaṇavacaḥ śrutvā

12. Then, having heard Rāvaṇa's words, that demon Mārīca transformed into a deer and roamed about at the entrance of Rāma's hermitage (āśrama).
मणिप्रवरशृङ्गाग्रः सितासितमुखाकृतिः ।
रक्तपद्मोत्पलमुख इन्द्रनीलोत्पलश्रवाः ॥१३॥
13. maṇipravaraśṛṅgāgraḥ sitāsitamukhākṛtiḥ ,
raktapadmotpalamukha indranīlotpalaśravāḥ.

13. The deer was endowed with horn-tips like precious gems, its face appeared in shades of white and black, its mouth resembled a red lotus and water-lily, and its ears were like sapphire-colored water-lilies.
किं चिदभ्युन्नत ग्रीव इन्द्रनीलनिभोदरः ।
मधूकनिभपार्श्वश्च कञ्जकिञ्जल्कसंनिभः ॥१४॥
14. kiṃ cidabhyunnata grīva indranīlanibhodaraḥ ,
madhūkanibhapārśvaśca kañjakiñjalkasaṃnibhaḥ.
14. kim cit abhyunnatagrīvaḥ indranīlanibhodaraḥ
madhūkanibhaparśvaḥ ca kañjakiñjalkasaṃnibhaḥ

14. Its neck was somewhat raised, its belly resembled a sapphire, its sides were like madhūka flowers, and its overall appearance was similar to the filaments of a lotus.
वैदूर्यसंकाशखुरस्तनुजङ्घः सुसंहतः ।
इन्द्रायुधसवर्णेन पुच्छेनोर्ध्वं विराजितः ॥१५॥
15. vaidūryasaṃkāśakhurastanujaṅghaḥ susaṃhataḥ ,
indrāyudhasavarṇena pucchenordhvaṃ virājitaḥ.
15. vaidūryasaṃkāśakhuraḥ tanujaṅghaḥ susaṃhataḥ
indrāyudhasavarṇena puchena ūrdhvaṃ virājitaḥ

15. It had hooves resembling cat's eye gems, slender shanks, and was well-built. It was splendidly adorned with a tail raised upwards, whose color was like a rainbow.
मनोहरस्निग्धवर्णो रत्नैर्नानाविधैर्वृतः ।
क्षणेन राक्षसो जातो मृगः परमशोभनः ॥१६॥
16. manoharasnigdhavarṇo ratnairnānāvidhairvṛtaḥ ,
kṣaṇena rākṣaso jāto mṛgaḥ paramaśobhanaḥ.

16. With a charming, lustrous color and adorned with various gems, in an instant, the demon became an exceedingly beautiful deer.
वनं प्रज्वलयन् रम्यं रामाश्रमपदं च तत् ।
मनोहरं दर्शनीयं रूपं कृत्वा स राक्षसः ॥१७॥
17. vanaṃ prajvalayan ramyaṃ rāmāśramapadaṃ ca tat ,
manoharaṃ darśanīyaṃ rūpaṃ kṛtvā sa rākṣasaḥ.
17. vanam prajvalayan ramyam rāmāśramapadam ca tat
manoharam darśanīyam rūpam kṛtvā saḥ rākṣasaḥ

17. That demon, having assumed a captivating and beautiful form, illuminated the charming forest and the hermitage of Rama.
प्रलोभनार्थं वैदेह्या नानाधातुविचित्रितम् ।
विचरन् गच्छते सम्यक् शाद्वलानि समन्ततः ॥१८॥
18. pralobhanārthaṃ vaidehyā nānādhātuvicitritam ,
vicaran gacchate samyak śādvalāni samantataḥ.

vicaran gacchate samyak śādvalāni samantataḥ

18. For the purpose of enticing Vaidehī (Sita), the one adorned with various minerals, wandered thoroughly through the green pastures all around.
रूप्यबिन्दुशतैश्चित्रो भूत्वा च प्रियदर्शनः ।
विटपीनां किसलयान्भङ्क्त्वादन् विचचार ह ॥१९॥
19. rūpyabinduśataiścitro bhūtvā ca priyadarśanaḥ ,
viṭapīnāṃ kisalayānbhaṅktvādan vicacāra ha.
19. rūpyabinduśataiḥ citraḥ bhūtvā ca priyadarśanaḥ
viṭapīnām kisalayān bhaṅktvā adan vicacāra ha

19. Having become dappled with hundreds of silver spots and pleasant to behold, he wandered about, breaking and eating the tender shoots of the trees.
कदलीगृहकं गत्वा कर्णिकारानितस्ततः ।
समाश्रयन्मन्दगतिः सीतासंदर्शनं तदा ॥२०॥
20. kadalīgṛhakaṃ gatvā karṇikārānitastataḥ ,
samāśrayanmandagatiḥ sītāsaṃdarśanaṃ tadā.
20. kadalīgṛhakam gatvā karṇikārān itastataḥ
samāśrayan mandagatiḥ sītāsaṃdarśanam tadā

20. Having gone to the banana grove, then, moving slowly, he resorted to the Karṇikāra trees here and there, so that Sita might see him.
राजीवचित्रपृष्ठः स विरराज महामृगः ।
रामाश्रमपदाभ्याशे विचचार यथासुखम् ॥२१॥
21. rājīvacitrapṛṣṭhaḥ sa virarāja mahāmṛgaḥ ,
rāmāśramapadābhyāśe vicacāra yathāsukham.
21. rājīvacitrapṛṣṭhaḥ saḥ virarāja mahāmṛgaḥ
rāmāśramapadābhyāśe vicacāra yathāsukham

21. That great deer, with a back variegated like a lotus, shone splendidly. He wandered at will near the hermitage (āśrama) of Rama.
पुनर्गत्वा निवृत्तश्च विचचार मृगोत्तमः ।
गत्वा मुहूर्तं त्वरया पुनः प्रतिनिवर्तते ॥२२॥
22. punargatvā nivṛttaśca vicacāra mṛgottamaḥ ,
gatvā muhūrtaṃ tvarayā punaḥ pratinivartate.

gatvā muhūrtaṃ tvarayā punaḥ pratinivartate

22. The excellent deer, after going away and then returning, wandered about. Having quickly gone for just a moment, it would return again.
विक्रीडंश्च पुनर्भूमौ पुनरेव निषीदति ।
आश्रमद्वारमागम्य मृगयूथानि गच्छति ॥२३॥
23. vikrīḍaṃśca punarbhūmau punareva niṣīdati ,
āśramadvāramāgamya mṛgayūthāni gacchati.

āśramadvāram āgamya mṛgayūthāni gacchati
23. bhūmau vikrīḍan ca punar punar eva niṣīdati

23. Playing on the ground, it would then sit down again and again. Having reached the entrance of the hermitage (āśrama), it would go towards other herds of deer.
मृगयूथैरनुगतः पुनरेव निवर्तते ।
सीतादर्शनमाकाङ्क्षन् राक्षसो मृगतां गतः ॥२४॥
24. mṛgayūthairanugataḥ punareva nivartate ,
sītādarśanamākāṅkṣan rākṣaso mṛgatāṃ gataḥ.
24. mṛgayūthaiḥ anugataḥ punar eva nivartate
sītādarśanam ākāṅkṣan rākṣasaḥ mṛgatām gataḥ
24. rākṣasaḥ mṛgatām gataḥ sītādarśanam ākāṅkṣan

24. Followed by other herds of deer, it would return again. The demon (rākṣasa), having assumed the form of a deer, was longing for a sight of Sītā.
परिभ्रमति चित्राणि मण्डलानि विनिष्पतन् ।
समुद्वीक्ष्य च सर्वे तं मृगा ये ऽन्ये वनेचराः ॥२५॥
25. paribhramati citrāṇi maṇḍalāni viniṣpatan ,
samudvīkṣya ca sarve taṃ mṛgā ye'nye vanecarāḥ.

25. Leaping about, it would wander around in various intricate circles. And all other deer and forest-dwelling animals (vanecara), having caught sight of it (the golden deer)...
उपगम्य समाघ्राय विद्रवन्ति दिशो दश ।
राक्षसः सो ऽपि तान् वन्यान्मृगान्मृगवधे रतः ॥२६॥
26. upagamya samāghrāya vidravanti diśo daśa ,
rākṣasaḥ so'pi tān vanyānmṛgānmṛgavadhe rataḥ.

rākṣasaḥ saḥ api tān vanyān mṛgān mṛgavadhē rataḥ

26. Having approached and sniffed, (the wild animals) scatter in all ten directions. Even that demon, who delighted in hunting wild animals...
प्रच्छादनार्थं भावस्य न भक्षयति संस्पृशन् ।
तस्मिन्नेव ततः काले वैदेही शुभलोचना ॥२७॥
27. pracchādanārthaṃ bhāvasya na bhakṣayati saṃspṛśan ,
tasminneva tataḥ kāle vaidehī śubhalocanā.

27. To conceal his true nature (bhāva), he does not devour (them) even after touching (them). It was at that very moment that Vaidehī (Sītā), with her auspicious eyes...
कुसुमापचये व्यग्रा पादपानत्यवर्तत ।
कर्णिकारानशोकांश्च चूटांश्च मदिरेक्षणा ॥२८॥
28. kusumāpacaye vyagrā pādapānatyavartata ,
karṇikārānaśokāṃśca cūṭāṃśca madirekṣaṇā.

28. Engrossed in gathering flowers, (Sītā) passed beyond the trees. The one with captivating eyes (Sītā) moved past Karṇikāra, Aśoka, and Mango trees.
कुसुमान्यपचिन्वन्ती चचार रुचिरानना ।
अनर्हारण्यवासस्य सा तं रत्नमयं मृगम् ।
मुक्तामणिविचित्राङ्गं ददर्श परमाङ्गना ॥२९॥
29. kusumānyapacinvantī cacāra rucirānanā ,
anarhāraṇyavāsasya sā taṃ ratnamayaṃ mṛgam ,
muktāmaṇivicitrāṅgaṃ dadarśa paramāṅganā.

29. She, with her charming face, roamed about, gathering flowers. She, the supreme lady (paramāṅganā), who was ill-suited for forest life, then saw that deer (mṛga) made of jewels, its body adorned with pearls and gems.
तं वै रुचिरदण्तौष्ठं रूप्यधातुतनूरुहम् ।
विस्मयोत्फुल्लनयना सस्नेहं समुदैक्षत ॥३०॥
30. taṃ vai ruciradaṇtauṣṭhaṃ rūpyadhātutanūruham ,
vismayotphullanayanā sasnehaṃ samudaikṣata.
30. tam vai ruciradantauṣṭham rūpyadhātutanūrūham
vismayotphullanayanā sasnehaṃ samudaikṣata

30. With her eyes wide open in astonishment, she (Sita) gazed lovingly at him, who possessed beautiful teeth and lips, and body hair resembling silver and metallic ores.
स च तां रामदयितां पश्यन्मायामयो मृगः ।
विचचार ततस्तत्र दीपयन्निव तद्वनम् ॥३१॥
31. sa ca tāṃ rāmadayitāṃ paśyanmāyāmayo mṛgaḥ ,
vicacāra tatastatra dīpayanniva tadvanam.
31. saḥ ca tām rāmadayitām paśyan māyāmayaḥ mṛgaḥ
vicacāra tatas tatra dīpayan iva tat vanam
31. saḥ ca mṛgaḥ māyāmayaḥ paśyan tām rāmadayitām
tatas tatra vicacāra iva dīpayan tat vanam
31. And that illusory (māyā) deer, seeing her, Rama's beloved, then wandered about there, as if illuminating that forest.
अदृष्टपूर्वं दृष्ट्वा तं नानारत्नमयं मृगम् ।
विस्मयं परमं सीता जगाम जनकात्मजा ॥३२॥
32. adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ nānāratnamayaṃ mṛgam ,
vismayaṃ paramaṃ sītā jagāma janakātmajā.
32. adṛṣṭapūrvam dṛṣṭvā tam nānāratnamayam mṛgam
vismayam paramam sītā jagāma janakātmajā
32. sītā janakātmajā dṛṣṭvā tam mṛgam adṛṣṭapūrvam
nānāratnamayam jagāma paramam vismayam
32. Sita, the daughter of Janaka, having seen that deer, which was made of various gems and had never been seen before, experienced great astonishment.
