ततो भूतोपसृष्टेव वेपमाना पुनः पुनः ।
धरण्यां गतसत्त्वेव कौसल्या सूतमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. tato bhūtopasṛṣṭeva vepamānā punaḥ punaḥ ,

1. Then, Kausalya, trembling repeatedly as if afflicted by a spirit, and appearing lifeless on the ground, spoke to the charioteer.
नय मां यत्र काकुत्स्थः सीता यत्र च लक्ष्मणः ।
तान् विना क्षणमप्यत्र जीवितुं नोत्सहे ह्यहम् ॥२॥
2. naya māṃ yatra kākutsthaḥ sītā yatra ca lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
tān vinā kṣaṇamapyatra jīvituṃ notsahe hyaham.
2. naya mām yatra kākutsthaḥ sītā yatra ca lakṣmaṇaḥ
tān vinā kṣaṇam api atra jīvitum na utsahe hi aham
2. yatra kākutsthaḥ yatra ca sītā lakṣmaṇaḥ tatra mām naya.

2. Take me to where Kakutstha (Rama) is, and where Sita and Lakshmana are. For without them, I cannot endure to live here even for a moment.
निवर्तय रथं शीघ्रं दण्डकान्नय मामपि ।
अथ तान्नानुगच्छामि गमिष्यामि यमक्षयम् ॥३॥
3. nivartaya rathaṃ śīghraṃ daṇḍakānnaya māmapi ,
atha tānnānugacchāmi gamiṣyāmi yamakṣayam.
3. nivartaya ratham śīghram daṇḍakān naya mām api
atha tān na anugacchāmi gamiṣyāmi yamakṣayam
3. śīghram ratham nivartaya mām api daṇḍakān naya.
atha tān na anugacchāmi yamakṣayam gamiṣyāmi
3. Turn back the chariot quickly, and take me also to the Dandaka forest. Otherwise, if I do not follow them, I shall go to the abode of Yama (yamakṣaya).
बाष्पवेगौपहतया स वाचा सज्जमानया ।
इदमाश्वासयन्देवीं सूतः प्राञ्जलिरब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. bāṣpavegaupahatayā sa vācā sajjamānayā ,
idamāśvāsayandevīṃ sūtaḥ prāñjalirabravīt.
4. bāṣpavegaupahtayā sa vācā sajjamānayā idam
āśvāsayat devīm sūtaḥ prāñjaliḥ abravīt
4. sūtaḥ prāñjaliḥ bāṣpavegaupahtayā

4. With folded hands, the charioteer comforted the queen, speaking these words with a voice choked and faltering, overcome by a rush of tears.
त्यज शोकं च मोहं च संभ्रमं दुःखजं तथा ।
व्यवधूय च संतापं वने वत्स्यति राघवः ॥५॥
5. tyaja śokaṃ ca mohaṃ ca saṃbhramaṃ duḥkhajaṃ tathā ,
vyavadhūya ca saṃtāpaṃ vane vatsyati rāghavaḥ.
5. tyaja śokam ca moham ca saṃbhramam duḥkhajam tathā
vyavadhūya ca saṃtāpam vane vatsyati rāghavaḥ
5. (tvam) śokam ca moham ca duḥkhajam saṃbhramam tathā
tyaja ca saṃtāpam vyavadhūya rāghavaḥ vane vatsyati
5. Abandon sorrow, delusion, and the confusion born of distress (duḥkha). Cast off your torment, for Rāghava will live in the forest.
लक्ष्मणश्चापि रामस्य पादौ परिचरन् वने ।
आराधयति धर्मज्ञः परलोकं जितेन्द्रियः ॥६॥
6. lakṣmaṇaścāpi rāmasya pādau paricaran vane ,
ārādhayati dharmajñaḥ paralokaṃ jitendriyaḥ.
6. lakṣmaṇaḥ ca api rāmasya pādau paricaran vane
ārādhayati dharmajñaḥ paralokam jitendriyaḥ
6. ca api dharmajñaḥ jitendriyaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ rāmasya
pādau vane paricaran paralokam ārādhayati
6. And Lakshmana, who understands natural law (dharma) and has mastered his senses, serves Rama's feet in the forest, thereby propitiating the afterlife (paraloka).
विजने ऽपि वने सीता वासं प्राप्य गृहेष्विव ।
विस्रम्भं लभते ऽभीता रामे संन्यस्त मानसा ॥७॥
7. vijane'pi vane sītā vāsaṃ prāpya gṛheṣviva ,
visrambhaṃ labhate'bhītā rāme saṃnyasta mānasā.
7. vijane api vane sītā vāsam prāpya gṛheṣu iva
visrambham labhate abhītā rāme saṃnyasta mānasā
7. api vijane vane gṛheṣu iva vāsam prāpya,
sītā abhītā rāme saṃnyasta mānasā visrambham labhate
7. Even in the desolate forest, having found a dwelling, Sītā, fearless and with her mind completely entrusted to Rāma, experiences confidence as if she were in her own home.
नास्या दैन्यं कृतं किं चित् सुसूक्ष्ममपि लक्षये ।
उचितेव प्रवासानां वैदेही प्रतिभाति मा ॥८॥
8. nāsyā dainyaṃ kṛtaṃ kiṃ cit susūkṣmamapi lakṣaye ,
uciteva pravāsānāṃ vaidehī pratibhāti mā.
8. na asyāḥ dainyam kṛtam kim cit su-sūkṣmam api
lakṣaye ucitā iva pravāsānām vaidehī pratibhāti mā
8. asyāḥ kṛtam su-sūkṣmam api kim cit dainyam na lakṣaye.
vaidehī pravāsānām ucitā iva mā pratibhāti.
8. I do not perceive any distress, not even a very subtle one, caused by her. To me, Vaidehī (Sītā) appears as if she is accustomed to exiles.
नगरोपवनं गत्वा यथा स्म रमते पुरा ।
तथैव रमते सीता निर्जनेषु वनेष्वपि ॥९॥
9. nagaropavanaṃ gatvā yathā sma ramate purā ,
tathaiva ramate sītā nirjaneṣu vaneṣvapi.
9. nagara-upavanam gatvā yathā sma ramate purā
tathā eva ramate sītā nirjaneṣu vaneṣu api
9. sītā purā nagara-upavanam gatvā yathā ramate sma,
tathā eva nirjaneṣu vaneṣu api ramate.
9. Just as she used to delight in the city parks in the past, so too Sītā delights even in solitary forests.
बालेव रमते सीता बालचन्द्रनिभानना ।
रामा रामे ह्यदीनात्मा विजने ऽपि वने सती ॥१०॥
10. bāleva ramate sītā bālacandranibhānanā ,
rāmā rāme hyadīnātmā vijane'pi vane satī.
10. bālā iva ramate sītā bāla-candra-nibha-ānanā
rāmā rāme hi adīna-ātmā vijane api vane satī
10. bāla-candra-nibha-ānanā sītā bālā iva ramate.
hi rāme (sahita) adīna-ātmā rāmā satī vijane vane api (ramate).
10. Sītā, whose face resembles the young moon, delights like a young girl. For her spirit (ātman) is not dejected while with Rāma, even though she is in a solitary forest.
तद्गतं हृदयं ह्यस्यास्तदधीनं च जीवितम् ।
अयोध्यापि भवेत्तस्या राम हीना तथा वनम् ॥११॥
11. tadgataṃ hṛdayaṃ hyasyāstadadhīnaṃ ca jīvitam ,
ayodhyāpi bhavettasyā rāma hīnā tathā vanam.
11. tat-gatam hṛdayam hi asyāḥ tat-adhīnam ca jīvitam
ayodhyā api bhavet tasyāḥ rāma hīnā tathā vanam
11. hi asyāḥ hṛdayam tat-gatam,
ca jīvitam tat-adhīnam.
rāma hīnā ayodhyā api tasyāḥ tathā vanam bhavet.
11. Indeed, her heart is entirely devoted to him (Rāma), and her life is dependent on him. For her, even Ayodhyā, without Rāma, would become like a forest.
पथि पृच्छति वैदेही ग्रामांश्च नगराणि च ।
गतिं दृष्ट्वा नदीनां च पादपान् विविधानपि ॥१२॥
12. pathi pṛcchati vaidehī grāmāṃśca nagarāṇi ca ,
gatiṃ dṛṣṭvā nadīnāṃ ca pādapān vividhānapi.
12. pathi pṛcchati vaidehī grāmān ca nagarāṇi ca
gatim dṛṣṭvā nadīnām ca pādapān vividhān api
12. pathi vaidehī nadīnām ca vividhān pādapān ca
gatim dṛṣṭvā grāmān ca nagarāṇi ca pṛcchati
12. On the path, Vaidehī asks about villages and cities, having observed the course of rivers and various trees.
अध्वना वात वेगेन संभ्रमेणातपेन च ।
न हि गच्छति वैदेह्याश्चन्द्रांशुसदृशी प्रभा ॥१३॥
13. adhvanā vāta vegena saṃbhrameṇātapena ca ,
na hi gacchati vaidehyāścandrāṃśusadṛśī prabhā.
13. adhvanā vāta vegena saṃbhrameṇa ātapena ca na
hi gacchati vaidehyāḥ candrāṃśusadṛśī prabhā
13. adhvanā vāta-vegena saṃbhrameṇa ca ātapena ca hi
vaidehyāḥ candrāṃśu-sadṛśī prabhā na gacchati
13. Even with the journey (adhvan), the swiftness of the wind, the agitation (saṃbhrama) (from travel), and the heat, Vaidehī's moonbeam-like radiance does not diminish.
सदृशं शतपत्रस्य पूर्णचन्द्रोपमप्रभम् ।
वदनं तद्वदान्याया वैदेह्या न विकम्पते ॥१४॥
14. sadṛśaṃ śatapatrasya pūrṇacandropamaprabham ,
vadanaṃ tadvadānyāyā vaidehyā na vikampate.
14. sadṛśam śatapatrasya pūrṇacandropamaprabham
vadanam tat vadānyāyāḥ vaidehyāḥ na vikampate
14. śatapatrasya sadṛśam pūrṇacandropamaprabham
tat vadānyāyāḥ vaidehyāḥ vadanam na vikampate
14. That face of the generous Vaidehī, resembling a lotus (śatapatra) and radiant like a full moon, does not tremble or falter.
अलक्तरसरक्ताभावलक्तरसवर्जितौ ।
अद्यापि चरणौ तस्याः पद्मकोशसमप्रभौ ॥१५॥
15. alaktarasaraktābhāvalaktarasavarjitau ,
adyāpi caraṇau tasyāḥ padmakośasamaprabhau.

api caraṇau tasyāḥ padmakośasamaprabhau
15. adya api tasyāḥ alaktarasaraktābhāvalaktarasavarjitau

15. Even today, her two feet, lacking the redness of lac-dye and devoid of lac-dye, (yet) shine with the splendor of lotus buds.
नूपुरोद्घुष्टहेलेव खेलं गच्छति भामिनी ।
इदानीमपि वैदेही तद्रागा न्यस्तभूषणा ॥१६॥
16. nūpurodghuṣṭaheleva khelaṃ gacchati bhāminī ,
idānīmapi vaidehī tadrāgā nyastabhūṣaṇā.
16. nūpurodghuṣṭahelā iva khelam gacchati bhāminī
idānīm api vaidehī tadrāgā nyastabhūṣaṇā
16. idānīm api vaidehī tadrāgā nyastabhūṣaṇā
bhāminī nūpurodghuṣṭahelā iva khelam gacchati
16. Even now, Vaidehī, filled with that love, having discarded her ornaments, walks playfully, as if her graceful sport were announced by the jingle of her anklets.
गजं वा वीक्ष्य सिंहं वा व्याघ्रं वा वनमाश्रिता ।
नाहारयति संत्रासं बाहू रामस्य संश्रिता ॥१७॥
17. gajaṃ vā vīkṣya siṃhaṃ vā vyāghraṃ vā vanamāśritā ,
nāhārayati saṃtrāsaṃ bāhū rāmasya saṃśritā.
17. gajam vā vīkṣya siṃham vā vyāghram vā vanam āśritā
na āhārayati saṃtrāsam bāhū rāmasya saṃśritā
17. vanam āśritā rāmasya bāhū saṃśritā gajam vā siṃham
vā vyāghram vā vīkṣya saṃtrāsam na āhārayati
17. Having taken refuge in the forest, she does not experience terror even when seeing an elephant, a lion, or a tiger, for she has resorted to the arms of Rama.
न शोच्यास्ते न चात्मा ते शोच्यो नापि जनाधिपः ।
इदं हि चरितं लोके प्रतिष्ठास्यति शाश्वतम् ॥१८॥
18. na śocyāste na cātmā te śocyo nāpi janādhipaḥ ,
idaṃ hi caritaṃ loke pratiṣṭhāsyati śāśvatam.
18. na śocyāḥ te na ca ātmā te śocyaḥ na api janādhipaḥ
idam hi caritam loke pratiṣṭhāsyati śāśvatam
18. te na śocyāḥ te ca ātmā na śocyaḥ janādhipaḥ api na
śocyaḥ hi idam caritam loke śāśvatam pratiṣṭhāsyati
18. They are not to be lamented, nor is your own self (ātman) to be lamented, nor is the king (janādhipa) to be lamented. For this tale (caritam) will be eternally established in the world.
विधूय शोकं परिहृष्टमानसा महर्षियाते पथि सुव्यवस्थिताः ।
वने रता वन्यफलाशनाः पितुः शुभां प्रतिज्ञां परिपालयन्ति ते ॥१९॥
19. vidhūya śokaṃ parihṛṣṭamānasā maharṣiyāte pathi suvyavasthitāḥ ,
vane ratā vanyaphalāśanāḥ pituḥ śubhāṃ pratijñāṃ paripālayanti te.
19. vidhūya śokam parihṛṣṭamānasāḥ
maharṣiyāte pathi suvyavasthitāḥ
vane ratāḥ vanyaphalāśanāḥ pituḥ
śubhām pratijñām paripālayanti te
19. śokam vidhūya parihṛṣṭamānasāḥ

19. Having cast off sorrow, with greatly joyful minds and firmly established on the path traversed by great sages, they, finding delight in the forest and subsisting on wild fruits, uphold their father's auspicious vow.
तथापि सूतेन सुयुक्तवादिना निवार्यमाणा सुतशोककर्शिता ।
न चैव देवी विरराम कूजितात् प्रियेति पुत्रेति च राघवेति च ॥२०॥
20. tathāpi sūtena suyuktavādinā nivāryamāṇā sutaśokakarśitā ,
na caiva devī virarāma kūjitāt priyeti putreti ca rāghaveti ca.
20. tathāpi sūtena suyuktavādinā
nivāryamāṇā sutaśokakarśitā na ca
eva devī virarāma kūjitāt priya
iti putra iti ca rāghava iti ca
20. sutaśokakarśitā devī suyuktavādinā

20. Despite being restrained by the charioteer, who spoke very reasonably, Queen Kausalya, emaciated by grief for her son, did not cease her lamentations, crying "Oh, my dear one!", "Oh, my son!", and "Oh, Rama!".
