स पुनः पतितां दृष्ट्वा क्रोधाच्छूर्पणखां खरः ।
उवाच व्यक्तता वाचा तामनर्थार्थमागताम् ॥१॥
1. sa punaḥ patitāṃ dṛṣṭvā krodhācchūrpaṇakhāṃ kharaḥ ,

1. Khara, upon seeing Śūrpaṇakhā fallen again, and realizing she had come for a futile purpose, spoke to her clearly, out of anger.
मया त्विदानीं शूरास्ते राक्षसा रुधिराशनाः ।
त्वत्प्रियार्थं विनिर्दिष्टाः किमर्थं रुद्यते पुनः ॥२॥
2. mayā tvidānīṃ śūrāste rākṣasā rudhirāśanāḥ ,
tvatpriyārthaṃ vinirdiṣṭāḥ kimarthaṃ rudyate punaḥ.
2. mayā tu idānīm śūrāḥ te rākṣasāḥ rudhirāśanāḥ
tvatpriyārtham vinirdiṣṭāḥ kimartham rudyate punaḥ
2. mayā tu idānīm te śūrāḥ rudhirāśanāḥ rākṣasāḥ tvatpriyārtham vinirdiṣṭāḥ.

2. Indeed, I have now appointed those brave, blood-eating Rākṣasas for your sake. Why are you crying again?
भक्ताश्चैवानुरक्ताश्च हिताश्च मम नित्यशः ।
घ्नन्तो ऽपि न निहन्तव्या न न कुर्युर्वचो मम ॥३॥
3. bhaktāścaivānuraktāśca hitāśca mama nityaśaḥ ,
ghnanto'pi na nihantavyā na na kuryurvaco mama.
3. bhaktāḥ ca eva anuraktāḥ ca hitāḥ ca mama nityaśaḥ
ghnantaḥ api na nihantavyāḥ na na kuryuḥ vacaḥ mama
3. te nityaśaḥ mama bhaktāḥ ca eva anuraktāḥ ca hitāḥ ca (santi).
ghnantaḥ api na nihantavyāḥ.
na na mama vacaḥ kuryuḥ.
3. Indeed, they are always devoted, attached, and beneficial to me. Even if they are attacking, they should not be killed. They would certainly not disregard my command.
किमेतच्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि कारणं यत्कृते पुनः ।
हा नाथेति विनर्दन्ती सर्पवद्वेष्टसे क्षितौ ॥४॥
4. kimetacchrotumicchāmi kāraṇaṃ yatkṛte punaḥ ,
hā nātheti vinardantī sarpavadveṣṭase kṣitau.
4. kim etat śrotum icchāmi kāraṇam yatkṛte punaḥ
hā nātha iti vinardantī sarpavat veṣṭase kṣitau
4. etat kim kāraṇam yatkṛte punaḥ śrotum icchāmi? hā nātha iti vinardantī (tvam) sarpavat kṣitau veṣṭase.
4. What is this reason for which you are crying out 'Oh Master!' again, writhing on the ground like a snake? I want to hear it.
अनाथवद्विलपसि किं नु नाथे मयि स्थिते ।
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ मा भैषीर्वैक्लव्यं त्यज्यतामिह ॥५॥
5. anāthavadvilapasi kiṃ nu nāthe mayi sthite ,
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha mā bhaiṣīrvaiklavyaṃ tyajyatāmiha.
5. anāthavat vilapasi kim nu nāthe mayi sthite |
uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha mā bhaiṣīḥ vaiklavyaṃ tyajyatām iha
5. mayi nāthe sthite anāthavat kim nu vilapasi uttiṣṭha
uttiṣṭha mā bhaiṣīḥ iha vaiklavyaṃ tyajyatām
5. Why do you lament like one without a protector when I, your protector, am present? Rise, rise! Do not be afraid; let this distress be abandoned here.
इत्येवमुक्ता दुर्धर्षा खरेण परिसान्त्विता ।
विमृज्य नयने सास्रे खरं भ्रातरमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. ityevamuktā durdharṣā khareṇa parisāntvitā ,
vimṛjya nayane sāsre kharaṃ bhrātaramabravīt.
6. iti evam uktā durdharṣā khareṇa parisāntvitā |
vimṛjya nayane sāsre kharaṃ bhrātaram abravīt
6. khareṇa iti evam uktā durdharṣā parisāntvitā
sāsre nayane vimṛjya bhrātaram kharam abravīt
6. Having been addressed in this manner by Khara, the formidable woman, thus completely consoled, wiped her tearful eyes and spoke to her brother Khara.
प्रेषिताश्च त्वया शूरा राक्षसास्ते चतुर्दश ।
निहन्तुं राघवं घोरा मत्प्रियार्थं सलक्ष्मणम् ॥७॥
7. preṣitāśca tvayā śūrā rākṣasāste caturdaśa ,
nihantuṃ rāghavaṃ ghorā matpriyārthaṃ salakṣmaṇam.
7. preṣitāḥ ca tvayā śūrāḥ rākṣasāḥ te caturdaśa |
nihantuṃ rāghavaṃ ghorāḥ matpriyārthaṃ salakṣmaṇam
7. ca tvayā matpriyārthaṃ ghorāḥ śūrāḥ te caturdaśa
rākṣasāḥ salakṣmaṇam rāghavaṃ nihantuṃ preṣitāḥ
7. And those fourteen formidable and brave demons were sent by you to kill Rāghava (Rāma) along with Lakṣmaṇa, for my pleasure.
ते तु रामेण सामर्षाः शूलपट्टिशपाणयः ।
समरे निहताः सर्वे सायकैर्मर्मभेदिभिः ॥८॥
8. te tu rāmeṇa sāmarṣāḥ śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇayaḥ ,
samare nihatāḥ sarve sāyakairmarmabhedibhiḥ.
8. te tu rāmeṇa sāmarṣāḥ śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇayaḥ |
samare nihatāḥ sarve sāyakaiḥ marmabhedibhiḥ
8. tu te sāmarṣāḥ śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇayaḥ sarve
rāmeṇa marmabhedibhiḥ sāyakaiḥ samare nihatāḥ
8. But all of those demons, who were full of indignation and held spears and pattiśa weapons in their hands, were killed in battle by Rāma with arrows that pierced their vital spots.
तान्भूमौ पतितान्दृष्ट्वा क्षणेनैव महाबलान् ।
रामस्य च महत् कर्म महांस्त्रासो ऽभवन्मम ॥९॥
9. tānbhūmau patitāndṛṣṭvā kṣaṇenaiva mahābalān ,
rāmasya ca mahat karma mahāṃstrāso'bhavanmama.
9. tān bhūmau patitān dṛṣṭvā kṣaṇena eva mahābalān
rāmasya ca mahat karma mahān trāsaḥ abhavat mama
9. rāmasya mahat karma tān mahābalān bhūmau kṣaṇena
eva patitān dṛṣṭvā ca mama mahān trāsaḥ abhavat
9. Seeing those exceedingly mighty ones fallen on the ground in an instant, and witnessing that great deed (karma) of Rama, a great fear arose within me.
सास्मि भीता समुद्विग्ना विषण्णा च निशाचर ।
शरणं त्वां पुनः प्राप्ता सर्वतो भयदर्शिनी ॥१०॥
10. sāsmi bhītā samudvignā viṣaṇṇā ca niśācara ,
śaraṇaṃ tvāṃ punaḥ prāptā sarvato bhayadarśinī.
10. sā asmi bhītā samudvignā viṣaṇṇā ca niśācara
śaraṇam tvām punaḥ prāptā sarvataḥ bhayadarśinī
10. niśācara! sā bhītā samudvignā viṣaṇṇā ca asmi.
sarvataḥ bhayadarśinī punaḥ tvām śaraṇam prāptā.
10. O night-dweller (niśācara), I am frightened, agitated, and despondent. Perceiving danger from all sides, I have once again come to you for refuge.
विषादनक्राध्युषिते परित्रासोर्मिमालिनि ।
किं मां न त्रायसे मग्नां विपुले शोकसागरे ॥११॥
11. viṣādanakrādhyuṣite paritrāsormimālini ,
kiṃ māṃ na trāyase magnāṃ vipule śokasāgare.
11. viṣādanakra adhyuṣite paritrāsa ūrmi mālini
kim mām na trāyase magnām vipule śoka sāgare
11. vipule śoka sāgare viṣādanakra adhyuṣite
paritrāsa ūrmi mālini magnām mām kim na trāyase
11. Why do you not protect me, who is immersed in this vast ocean of sorrow, inhabited by the 'crocodiles' of dejection and adorned with garlands of 'waves' of intense fear?
एते च निहता भूमौ रामेण निशितैः शरैः ।
ये च मे पदवीं प्राप्ता राक्षसाः पिशिताशनाः ॥१२॥
12. ete ca nihatā bhūmau rāmeṇa niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
ye ca me padavīṃ prāptā rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ.
12. ete ca nihatāḥ bhūmau rāmeṇa niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
ye ca me padavīm prāptāḥ rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ
12. ca ete rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ ye ca me padavīm
prāptāḥ bhūmau rāmeṇa niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ nihatāḥ
12. And these flesh-eating Rākṣasas, who had come into my path, have been slain on the ground by Rama with his sharp arrows.
मयि ते यद्यनुक्रोशो यदि रक्षःसु तेषु च ।
रामेण यदि शक्तिस्ते तेजो वास्ति निशाचर ।
दण्डकारण्यनिलयं जहि राक्षसकण्टकम् ॥१३॥
13. mayi te yadyanukrośo yadi rakṣaḥsu teṣu ca ,
rāmeṇa yadi śaktiste tejo vāsti niśācara ,
daṇḍakāraṇyanilayaṃ jahi rākṣasakaṇṭakam.
13. mayi te yadi anukrośaḥ yadi rakṣaḥsu
teṣu ca rāmeṇa yadi śaktiḥ
te tejaḥ vā asti niśācara
daṇḍakāraṇyanilayam jahi rākṣasakaṇṭakam
13. niśācara! yadi te mayi anukrośaḥ asti,
yadi ca teṣu rakṣaḥsu (anukrośaḥ asti),
yadi rāmeṇa (saha yoddhum) te śaktiḥ vā tejaḥ asti,
(tarhi) daṇḍakāraṇyanilayam rākṣasakaṇṭakam jahi.
13. O night-wanderer, if you have compassion for me and for those rākṣasas, and if you truly possess strength or prowess (tejas) against Rāma, then go and destroy the tormentor of rākṣasas who resides in Daṇḍakāraṇya!
यदि रामं ममामित्रमद्य त्वं न वधिष्यसि ।
तव चैवाग्रतः प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यामि निरपत्रपा ॥१४॥
14. yadi rāmaṃ mamāmitramadya tvaṃ na vadhiṣyasi ,
tava caivāgrataḥ prāṇāṃstyakṣyāmi nirapatrapā.
14. yadi rāmam mama amitram adya tvam na vadhiṣyasi
tava ca eva agrataḥ prāṇān tyakṣyāmi nirapatrapā
14. yadi tvam adya mama amitram rāmam na vadhiṣyasi,
ca eva (tarhi) nirapatrapā (aham) tava agrataḥ prāṇān tyakṣyāmi.
14. If today you do not kill Rāma, who is my enemy, then I, devoid of shame, will give up my life (prāṇa) right before your eyes.
बुद्ध्याहमनुपश्यामि न त्वं रामस्य संयुगे ।
स्थातुं प्रतिमुखे शक्तः सचापस्य महारणे ॥१५॥
15. buddhyāhamanupaśyāmi na tvaṃ rāmasya saṃyuge ,
sthātuṃ pratimukhe śaktaḥ sacāpasya mahāraṇe.
15. buddhyā aham anupaśyāmi na tvam rāmasya saṃyuge
sthātum pratimukhe śaktaḥ sa-cāpasya mahā-raṇe
15. aham buddhyā anupaśyāmi (yat) tvam saṃyuge mahā-raṇe sa-cāpasya rāmasya pratimukhe sthātum na śaktaḥ (asi).
15. By my intelligence (buddhi), I perceive that you are not capable of standing face-to-face in battle, in a great war, with Rāma who wields a bow.
शूरमानी न शूरस्त्वं मिथ्यारोपितविक्रमः ।
मानुषौ यन्न शक्नोषि हन्तुं तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥१६॥
16. śūramānī na śūrastvaṃ mithyāropitavikramaḥ ,
mānuṣau yanna śaknoṣi hantuṃ tau rāmalakṣmaṇau.
16. śūramānī na śūraḥ tvam mithyāropitavikramaḥ
mānuṣau yat na śaknoṣi hantum tau rāmalakṣmaṇau
16. tvam śūramānī (asi),
(kintu) na śūraḥ (asi),
mithyāropitavikramaḥ (asi).
yat mānuṣau tau rāmalakṣmaṇau hantum na śaknoṣi.
16. You consider yourself a hero (śūra), but you are not truly a hero; your valor (vikrama) is falsely attributed, because you are unable to kill those two humans, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
अपयाहि जनस्थानात्त्वरितः सहबान्धवः ।
निःसत्त्वस्याल्पवीर्यस्य वासस्ते कीदृशस्त्विह ॥१७॥
17. apayāhi janasthānāttvaritaḥ sahabāndhavaḥ ,
niḥsattvasyālpavīryasya vāsaste kīdṛśastviha.
17. apayāhi janasthānāt tvaritaḥ sahabāndhavaḥ
niḥsattvasya alpavīryasya vāsaḥ te kīdṛśaḥ tu iha
17. tvaritaḥ sahabāndhavaḥ janasthānāt apayāhi
niḥsattvasya alpavīryasya te iha tu vāsaḥ kīdṛśaḥ
17. Depart quickly from Janasthana with your relatives. For one who lacks strength and has little valor, what kind of dwelling is this place for you?
रामतेजोऽभिभूतो हि त्वं क्षिप्रं विनशिष्यसि ।
स हि तेजःसमायुक्तो रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
भ्राता चास्य महावीर्यो येन चास्मि विरूपिता ॥१८॥
18. rāmatejo'bhibhūto hi tvaṃ kṣipraṃ vinaśiṣyasi ,
sa hi tejaḥsamāyukto rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ,
bhrātā cāsya mahāvīryo yena cāsmi virūpitā.
18. rāmatejaḥ abhibhūtaḥ hi tvam kṣipram
vinaśiṣyasi | saḥ hi tejaḥ samāyuktaḥ
rāmaḥ daśarathātmajaḥ | bhrātā ca
asya mahāvīryaḥ yena ca asmi virūpitā
18. hi tvam rāmatejaḥ abhibhūtaḥ kṣipram
vinaśiṣyasi hi saḥ daśarathātmajaḥ
rāmaḥ tejaḥ samāyuktaḥ ca asya
mahāvīryaḥ bhrātā ca yena asmi virūpitā
18. Indeed, you, being overwhelmed by Rama's power, will quickly perish. For he is Rama, the son of Dasharatha, endowed with great splendor. And his brother is also of great valor, by whom I was disfigured.
