1.
Having gone to the ocean, the king, followed by Gaṅgā then, entered the depths of the earth, where they (the sons of Sagara) were turned to ashes.

2.
O Rāma, when the ashes were thus immersed by the waters of Gaṅgā, Brahmā, the lord of all worlds, said this to the king.
तारिता नरशार्दूल दिवं याताश्च देववत् ।

3.
O best of men (Rāma), the sixty thousand sons of the great-souled Sagara have been redeemed and have attained heaven like gods.

4.
O king, as long as the water of the ocean remains in the world, so long will the sons of Sagara abide in heaven like gods.

5.
And this eldest daughter of yours will be Gaṅgā. She will indeed become renowned in the world by the name given by you.

6.
Gaṅgā is named 'Tripathagā' (the one who travels three paths) and also 'Divine Bhāgīrathī'. She is thus remembered as 'Tripathagā' because she makes manifest the three paths (heaven, earth, and the underworld).

O ruler of men (manujādhipa), you must now offer water libations for all your ancestors. O king, fulfill your vow.

8.
O King, indeed, even by that extremely famous king who came before, the foremost among those who uphold natural law (dharma), this desire was not achieved then.

9.
Similarly, O dear one, even by Aṃśumat, whose splendor in the world was unrivaled, the vow to bring down the Gaṅgā was not fulfilled.

10.
(This task was not accomplished) by a royal sage (rājarṣi) who was virtuous, whose splendor was equal to that of a great sage, whose asceticism (tapas) was equal to mine, and who was indeed established in the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior (kṣatra).

11.
O illustrious one, O faultless one, even your father Dilīpa, of great splendor, who wished to bring the Gaṅgā, did not attempt it again.

13.
And, O subduer of enemies, the descent of the Gaṅgā was accomplished by you. By this (action), you have attained a great abode of natural law (dharma).

The greatly renowned royal sage (rājarṣi) Bhageeratha, having performed the excellent water offering for the Sagara ancestors in due order and according to propriety, and having thus made the water offering, the purified king indeed entered his own city.

O best of men, Rāma! That king (Bhageeratha), whose purpose was accomplished, indeed ruled his own kingdom. And the people, having received that king, O Rāghava, rejoiced; their sorrow was destroyed, their prosperity achieved, and they became free from anxiety.
