भृशमाव्रजमानस्य तस्याधोवामलोचनम् ।
प्रास्फुरच्चास्खलद् रामो वेपथुश्चास्य जायते ॥१॥
1. bhṛśamāvrajamānasya tasyādhovāmalocanam ,

1. As he, Rama, was intensely approaching, his lower left eye twitched, and he stumbled, and a tremor arose in him.
उपालक्ष्य निमित्तानि सो ऽशुभानि मुहुर्मुहुः ।
अपि क्षेमं तु सीताया इति वै व्याजहार ह ॥२॥
2. upālakṣya nimittāni so'śubhāni muhurmuhuḥ ,
api kṣemaṃ tu sītāyā iti vai vyājahāra ha.
2. upalakṣya nimittāni saḥ aśubhāni muhurmuhuḥ
api kṣemam tu sītāyāḥ iti vai vyājahāra ha
2. saḥ muhurmuhuḥ aśubhāni nimittāni upalakṣya,
"api sītāyāḥ kṣemam tu" iti vai ha vyājahāra.
2. Observing these inauspicious omens repeatedly, he indeed said, "Is Sita's welfare truly secure?"
त्वरमाणो जगामाथ सीतादर्शनलालसः ।
शून्यमावसथं दृष्ट्वा बभूवोद्विग्नमानसः ॥३॥
3. tvaramāṇo jagāmātha sītādarśanalālasaḥ ,
śūnyamāvasathaṃ dṛṣṭvā babhūvodvignamānasaḥ.
3. tvaramāṇaḥ jagāma atha sītādarśanalālasaḥ
śūnyam āvasatham dṛṣṭvā babhūva udvignamānasaḥ
3. atha tvaramāṇaḥ sītādarśanalālasaḥ (saḥ) jagāma.

3. Then, hurrying and eager to see Sita, he proceeded. Upon seeing the dwelling empty, he became troubled in mind.
उद्भ्रमन्निव वेगेन विक्षिपन् रघुनन्दनः ।
तत्र तत्रोटजस्थानमभिवीक्ष्य समन्ततः ॥४॥
4. udbhramanniva vegena vikṣipan raghunandanaḥ ,
tatra tatroṭajasthānamabhivīkṣya samantataḥ.
4. udbhraman iva vegena vikṣipan raghunandanaḥ |
tatra tatra uṭajasthānam abhivīkṣya samantataḥ
4. raghunandanaḥ vegena udbhraman iva vikṣipan,

4. Rama (Raghunandana), as if whirling rapidly and looking wildly, scrutinized the hermitage location (uṭajasthāna) all around, here and there.
ददर्श पर्णशालां च रहितां सीतया तदा ।
श्रिया विरहितां ध्वस्तां हेमन्ते पद्मिनीमिव ॥५॥
5. dadarśa parṇaśālāṃ ca rahitāṃ sītayā tadā ,
śriyā virahitāṃ dhvastāṃ hemante padminīmiva.
5. dadarśa parṇaśālām ca rahitām sītayā tadā |
śriyā virahitām dhvastām hemante padminīm iva
5. tadā ca parṇaśālām sītayā rahitām,
śriyā virahitām dhvastām,

5. Then he saw the leaf-hut (parṇaśālā), deserted by Sita, and appearing ruined and bereft of splendor, like a lotus pond (padminī) in winter.
रुदन्तमिव वृक्षैश्च म्लानपुष्पमृगद्विजम् ।
श्रिया विहीनं विध्वस्तं संत्यक्तवनदैवतम् ॥६॥
6. rudantamiva vṛkṣaiśca mlānapuṣpamṛgadvijam ,
śriyā vihīnaṃ vidhvastaṃ saṃtyaktavanadaivatam.
6. rudantam iva vṛkṣaiḥ ca mlānapuṣpamṛgadvijam |
śriyā vihīnam vidhvastam saṃtyaktavanadaivatam
6. vṛkṣaiḥ ca rudantam iva,
mlānapuṣpamṛgadvijam,
śriyā vihīnam,
vidhvastam,
saṃtyaktavanadaivatam.
6. (He saw the hermitage) with its trees appearing as if weeping, with withered flowers, deer, and birds; devoid of splendor, ruined, and with its forest deities abandoned.
विप्रकीर्णाजिनकुशं विप्रविद्धबृसीकटम् ।
दृष्ट्वा शून्योटजस्थानं विललाप पुनः पुनः ॥७॥
7. viprakīrṇājinakuśaṃ vipraviddhabṛsīkaṭam ,
dṛṣṭvā śūnyoṭajasthānaṃ vilalāpa punaḥ punaḥ.
7. viprakīrṇājinakuśam vipraviddhabṛsīkaṭam |
dṛṣṭvā śūnya uṭajasthānam vilalāpa punaḥ punaḥ
7. viprakīrṇājinakuśam,
vipraviddhabṛsīkaṭam,
śūnya uṭajasthānam dṛṣṭvā,
punaḥ punaḥ vilalāpa.
7. Having seen the empty hermitage location (uṭajasthāna) with its scattered deer-skins and kuśa grass, and its thrown-about seats and mats, he wailed again and again.
हृता मृता वा नष्टा वा भक्षिता वा भविष्यति ।
निलीनाप्यथ वा भीरुरथ वा वनमाश्रिता ॥८॥
8. hṛtā mṛtā vā naṣṭā vā bhakṣitā vā bhaviṣyati ,
nilīnāpyatha vā bhīruratha vā vanamāśritā.
8. hṛtā mṛtā vā naṣṭā vā bhakṣitā vā bhaviṣyati
nilīnā api atha vā bhīruḥ atha vā vanam āśritā
8. hṛtā vā mṛtā vā naṣṭā vā bhakṣitā vā bhaviṣyati
nilīnā api vā atha bhīruḥ vā atha vanam āśritā
8. Has she been abducted, or is she dead, or lost, or eaten? Or has she merely hidden herself, or perhaps, being fearful, she has sought refuge in the forest?
गता विचेतुं पुष्पाणि फलान्यपि च वा पुनः ।
अथ वा पद्मिनीं याता जलार्थं वा नदीं गता ॥९॥
9. gatā vicetuṃ puṣpāṇi phalānyapi ca vā punaḥ ,
atha vā padminīṃ yātā jalārthaṃ vā nadīṃ gatā.
9. gatā vicetum puṣpāṇi phalāni api ca vā punaḥ
atha vā padminīm yātā jalārtham vā nadīm gatā
9. vā punaḥ gatā puṣpāṇi phalāni ca api vicetum
vā atha padminīm yātā vā nadīm jalārtham gatā
9. Or has she gone again to gather flowers and fruits? Or has she gone to a lotus pond, or to a river to fetch water?
यत्नान्मृगयमाणस्तु नाससाद वने प्रियाम् ।
शोकरक्तेक्षणः शोकादुन्मत्त इव लक्ष्यते ॥१०॥
10. yatnānmṛgayamāṇastu nāsasāda vane priyām ,
śokaraktekṣaṇaḥ śokādunmatta iva lakṣyate.
10. yatnāt mṛgayamāṇaḥ tu na āsasāda vane priyām
śokaraktekṣaṇaḥ śokāt unmattaḥ iva lakṣyate
10. tu yatnāt mṛgayamāṇaḥ vane priyām na āsasāda .
śokaraktekṣaṇaḥ śokāt unmattaḥ iva lakṣyate
10. Though diligently searching, he did not find his beloved in the forest. With eyes red from grief, he appeared as if mad.
वृक्षाद्वृक्षं प्रधावन् स गिरींश्चापि नदीन्नदीम् ।
बभूव विलपन् रामः शोकपङ्कार्णवप्लुतः ॥११॥
11. vṛkṣādvṛkṣaṃ pradhāvan sa girīṃścāpi nadīnnadīm ,
babhūva vilapan rāmaḥ śokapaṅkārṇavaplutaḥ.
11. vṛkṣāt vṛkṣam pradhāvan saḥ girīn ca api nadīn
nadīm babhūva vilapan rāmaḥ śokapaṅkārṇavaplutaḥ
11. saḥ vṛkṣāt vṛkṣam girīn ca api nadīn nadīm pradhāvan .
rāmaḥ vilapan śokapaṅkārṇavaplutaḥ babhūva
11. Rushing from tree to tree, and also through mountains and from river to river, Rama, lamenting, became immersed in an ocean of the mire of grief (śoka).
अस्ति कच्चित्त्वया दृष्टा सा कदम्बप्रिया प्रिया ।
कदम्ब यदि जानीषे शंस सीतां शुभाननाम् ॥१२॥
12. asti kaccittvayā dṛṣṭā sā kadambapriyā priyā ,
kadamba yadi jānīṣe śaṃsa sītāṃ śubhānanām.
12. asti kaccit tvayā dṛṣṭā sā kadambapriyā priyā
| kadamba yadi jānīṣe śaṃsa sītām śubhānanām
12. tvayā sā kadambapriyā priyā dṛṣṭā kaccit asti
kadamba yadi jānīṣe śubhānanām sītām śaṃsa
12. Has my beloved (priyā), who is fond of Kadamba trees, been seen by you by any chance? O Kadamba tree, if you know, please tell me about Sita, the one with a beautiful face.
स्निग्धपल्लवसंकाशां पीतकौशेयवासिनीम् ।
शंसस्व यदि वा दृष्टा बिल्व बिल्वोपमस्तनी ॥१३॥
13. snigdhapallavasaṃkāśāṃ pītakauśeyavāsinīm ,
śaṃsasva yadi vā dṛṣṭā bilva bilvopamastanī.
13. snigdhapallavasaṃkāśām pītakauśeyavāsinīm |
śaṃsasva yadi vā dṛṣṭā bilva bilvopamastanī
13. bilva yadi vā dṛṣṭā snigdhapallavasaṃkāśām
pītakauśeyavāsinīm bilvopamastanīm śaṃsasva
13. O Bilva tree, please tell me if you have seen her, who resembles tender shoots, who wears yellow silk, and whose breasts are like Bilva fruits.
अथ वार्जुन शंस त्वं प्रियां तामर्जुनप्रियाम् ।
जनकस्य सुता भीरुर्यदि जीवति वा न वा ॥१४॥
14. atha vārjuna śaṃsa tvaṃ priyāṃ tāmarjunapriyām ,
janakasya sutā bhīruryadi jīvati vā na vā.
14. atha vā arjuna śaṃsa tvam priyām tām arjunapriyām
| janakasya sutā bhīruḥ yadi jīvati vā na vā
14. atha vā arjuna tvam tām arjunapriyām priyām
śaṃsa janakasya bhīruḥ sutā jīvati vā na vā
14. Or, O Arjuna tree, you tell me about that beloved one (priyā), who is fond of Arjuna trees. (Tell me) whether Janaka's timid daughter (Sita) is alive or not.
ककुभः ककुभोरुं तां व्यक्तं जानाति मैथिलीम् ।
लतापल्लवपुष्पाढ्यो भाति ह्येष वनस्पतिः ॥१५॥
15. kakubhaḥ kakubhoruṃ tāṃ vyaktaṃ jānāti maithilīm ,
latāpallavapuṣpāḍhyo bhāti hyeṣa vanaspatiḥ.
15. kakubhaḥ kakubhorum tām vyaktam jānāti maithilīm
| latāpallavapuṣpāḍhyaḥ bhāti hi eṣa vanaspatiḥ
15. kakubhaḥ kakubhorum tām maithilīm vyaktam jānāti
hi eṣa latāpallavapuṣpāḍhyaḥ vanaspatiḥ bhāti
15. O Kakubha tree, you certainly know that Maithili (Sita), whose thighs are graceful like your branches. For this tree, laden with vines, fresh leaves, and flowers, truly shines brightly.
भ्रमरैरुपगीतश्च यथा द्रुमवरो ह्ययम् ।
एष व्यक्तं विजानाति तिलकस्तिलकप्रियाम् ॥१६॥
16. bhramarairupagītaśca yathā drumavaro hyayam ,
eṣa vyaktaṃ vijānāti tilakastilakapriyām.
16. bhramaraiḥ upagītaḥ ca yathā drumavaraḥ hi ayam
eṣaḥ vyaktam vijānāti tilakaḥ tilakapriyām
16. yathā ayam drumavaraḥ bhramarair upagītaḥ ca
hi eṣaḥ tilakaḥ tilakapriyām vyaktam vijānāti
16. Just as this excellent tree is hymned by bees, this Tilaka tree (tilaka) surely knows Tilakapriyā (Sītā) clearly.
अशोकशोकापनुद शोकोपहतचेतसं ।
त्वन्नामानं कुरु क्षिप्रं प्रियासंदर्शनेन माम् ॥१७॥
17. aśokaśokāpanuda śokopahatacetasaṃ ,
tvannāmānaṃ kuru kṣipraṃ priyāsaṃdarśanena mām.
17. aśoka śokāpanuda śokopahatacetasam
tvannāmānam kuru kṣipram priyāsaṃdarśanena mām
17. aśoka śokāpanuda śokopahatacetasam mām
priyāsaṃdarśanena kṣipram tvannāmānam kuru
17. O Aśoka tree (aśoka), dispeller of sorrow! Make me, whose mind is overcome by sorrow, quickly 'without sorrow' (tvannāman) by granting the sight of my beloved.
यदि ताल त्वया दृष्टा पक्वतालफलस्तनी ।
कथयस्व वरारोहां कारुष्यं यदि ते मयि ॥१८॥
18. yadi tāla tvayā dṛṣṭā pakvatālaphalastanī ,
kathayasva varārohāṃ kāruṣyaṃ yadi te mayi.
18. yadi tāla tvayā dṛṣṭā pakvatālaphala-stanī
kathayasva varārohām kāruṣyam yadi te mayi
18. tāla yadi pakvatālaphala-stanī varārohām
tvayā dṛṣṭā yadi te mayi kāruṣyam kathayasva
18. O Palm tree (tāla), if you have seen the beautiful lady (varārohā) whose breasts are like ripe palm fruits, then tell me, if you have compassion for me.
यदि दृष्टा त्वया सीता जम्बुजाम्बूनदप्रभा ।
प्रियां यदि विजानीषे निःशङ्कं कथयस्व मे ॥१९॥
19. yadi dṛṣṭā tvayā sītā jambujāmbūnadaprabhā ,
priyāṃ yadi vijānīṣe niḥśaṅkaṃ kathayasva me.
19. yadi dṛṣṭā tvayā sītā jambujāmbūnada-prabhā
priyām yadi vijānīṣe niḥśaṅkam kathayasva me
19. yadi sītā jambujāmbūnada-prabhā tvayā dṛṣṭā
yadi priyām vijānīṣe me niḥśaṅkam kathayasva
19. If Sītā, whose radiance is like the gold from the Jambu river (jambujāmbūnada-prabhā), has been seen by you, and if you recognize my beloved, then tell me unhesitatingly.
अथ वा मृगशावाक्षीं मृग जानासि मैथिलीम् ।
मृगविप्रेक्षणी कान्ता मृगीभिः सहिता भवेत् ॥२०॥
20. atha vā mṛgaśāvākṣīṃ mṛga jānāsi maithilīm ,
mṛgaviprekṣaṇī kāntā mṛgībhiḥ sahitā bhavet.
20. atha vā mṛgaśāvākṣīm mṛga jānāsi maithilīm |
mṛgaviprekṣaṇī kāntā mṛgībhiḥ sahitā bhavet
20. mṛga atha vā mṛgaśāvākṣīm maithilīm jānāsi
mṛgaviprekṣaṇī kāntā mṛgībhiḥ sahitā bhavet
20. Or, deer, do you know Maithili, whose eyes are like those of a fawn? Perhaps my beloved, whose gaze is like a deer's, is staying with these female deer.
गज सा गजनासोरुर्यदि दृष्टा त्वया भवेत् ।
तां मन्ये विदितां तुभ्यमाख्याहि वरवारण ॥२१॥
21. gaja sā gajanāsoruryadi dṛṣṭā tvayā bhavet ,
tāṃ manye viditāṃ tubhyamākhyāhi varavāraṇa.
21. gaja sā gajanāsoruḥ yadi dṛṣṭā tvayā bhavet |
tām manye viditām tubhyam ākhyāhi varavāraṇa
21. gaja yadi sā gajanāsoruḥ tvayā dṛṣṭā bhavet
tām tubhyam viditām manye varavāraṇa ākhyāhi
21. O elephant, if you have seen her whose thighs are like an elephant's trunk, then I believe she is known to you. O excellent elephant, please tell me.
शार्दूल यदि सा दृष्टा प्रिया चन्द्रनिभानना ।
मैथिली मम विस्रब्धः कथयस्व न ते भयम् ॥२२॥
22. śārdūla yadi sā dṛṣṭā priyā candranibhānanā ,
maithilī mama visrabdhaḥ kathayasva na te bhayam.
22. śārdūla yadi sā dṛṣṭā priyā candranibhānanā |
maithilī mama visrabdhaḥ kathayasva na te bhayam
22. śārdūla yadi mama priyā candranibhānanā maithilī sā
dṛṣṭā (asti) te bhayam na (asti) visrabdhaḥ kathayasva
22. O tiger, if you have seen my beloved Maithili, whose face is like the moon, please tell me confidently; you have no need to fear.
किं धावसि प्रिये नूनं दृष्टासि कमलेक्षणे ।
वृक्षेणाच्छाद्य चात्मानं किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥२३॥
23. kiṃ dhāvasi priye nūnaṃ dṛṣṭāsi kamalekṣaṇe ,
vṛkṣeṇācchādya cātmānaṃ kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣase.
23. kim dhāvasi priye nūnam dṛṣṭā asi kamalekṣaṇe |
vṛkṣeṇa ācchādya ca ātmānam kim mām na pratibhāṣase
23. priye kamalekṣaṇe kim dhāvasi nūnam dṛṣṭā asi
vṛkṣeṇa ca ātmānam ācchādya kim mām na pratibhāṣase
23. Why do you run, my beloved? Surely you are seen, O lotus-eyed one! Why do you not speak to me, hiding yourself behind that tree?
तिष्ठ तिष्ठ वरारोहे न ते ऽस्ति करुणा मयि ।
नात्यर्थं हास्यशीलासि किमर्थं मामुपेक्षसे ॥२४॥
24. tiṣṭha tiṣṭha varārohe na te'sti karuṇā mayi ,
nātyarthaṃ hāsyaśīlāsi kimarthaṃ māmupekṣase.
24. tiṣṭha tiṣṭha varārohe na te asti karuṇā mayi na
atyartham hāsyāśīlā asi kimartham mām upekṣase
24. varārohe tiṣṭha tiṣṭha te mayi karuṇā na asti tvam
atyartham hāsyāśīlā na asi kimartham mām upekṣase
24. Stop, stop, O fair-hipped one! You have no compassion for me. You are not usually so prone to excessive jesting; why do you neglect me?
पीतकौशेयकेनासि सूचिता वरवर्णिनि ।
धावन्त्यपि मया दृष्टा तिष्ठ यद्यस्ति सौहृदम् ॥२५॥
25. pītakauśeyakenāsi sūcitā varavarṇini ,
dhāvantyapi mayā dṛṣṭā tiṣṭha yadyasti sauhṛdam.
25. pītakauśeyakena asi sūcitā varavarṇini dhāvantī
api mayā dṛṣṭā tiṣṭha yadi asti sauhṛdam
25. varavarṇini pītakauśeyakena sūcitā asi mayā
dhāvantī api dṛṣṭā yadi sauhṛdam asti tiṣṭha
25. O beautiful woman, you were revealed by your yellow silk garment. Though running, you were seen by me. Stop, if there is any affection.
नैव सा नूनमथ वा हिंसिता चारुहासिनी ।
कृच्छ्रं प्राप्तं हि मां नूनं यथोपेक्षितुमर्हति ॥२६॥
26. naiva sā nūnamatha vā hiṃsitā cāruhāsinī ,
kṛcchraṃ prāptaṃ hi māṃ nūnaṃ yathopekṣitumarhati.
26. na eva sā nūnam atha vā hiṃsitā cāruhāsinī kṛcchram
prāptam hi mām nūnam yathā upekṣitum arhati
26. sā cāruhāsinī nūnam na eva athavā hiṃsitā hi
nūnam kṛcchram prāptam mām yathā upekṣitum arhati
26. Surely, she, the beautifully smiling one, is not present, or else she has been harmed. For how could she neglect me, who has fallen into such distress?
व्यक्तं सा भक्षिता बाला राक्षसैः पिशिताशनैः ।
विभज्याङ्गानि सर्वाणि मया विरहिता प्रिया ॥२७॥
27. vyaktaṃ sā bhakṣitā bālā rākṣasaiḥ piśitāśanaiḥ ,
vibhajyāṅgāni sarvāṇi mayā virahitā priyā.
27. vyaktam sā bhakṣitā bālā rākṣasaiḥ piśitāśanaiḥ
vibhajya aṅgāni sarvāṇi mayā virahitā priyā
27. vyaktam mayā virahitā sā priyā bālā piśitāśanaiḥ
rākṣasaiḥ sarvāṇi aṅgāni vibhajya bhakṣitā
27. Clearly, that young woman, my beloved, separated from me, has been devoured by flesh-eating Rākṣasas, having torn apart all her limbs.
नूनं तच्छुभदन्तौष्ठं मुखं निष्प्रभतां गतम् ।
सा हि चम्पकवर्णाभा ग्रीवा ग्रैवेय शोभिता ॥२८॥
28. nūnaṃ tacchubhadantauṣṭhaṃ mukhaṃ niṣprabhatāṃ gatam ,
sā hi campakavarṇābhā grīvā graiveya śobhitā.
28. nūnam tat śubhadantoṣṭham mukham niṣprabhatām
gatam | sā hi campakavarṇābhā grīvā graiveyaśobhitā
28. nūnam tat śubhadantoṣṭham mukham niṣprabhatām
gatam hi sā campakavarṇābhā graiveyaśobhitā grīvā
28. Certainly, that face, with its beautiful teeth and lips, must have become lusterless. And that neck, which had the radiant glow of a champaka flower and was adorned with a necklace, must also be in a similar state.
कोमला विलपन्त्यास्तु कान्ताया भक्षिता शुभा ।
नूनं विक्षिप्यमाणौ तौ बाहू पल्लवकोमलौ ॥२९॥
29. komalā vilapantyāstu kāntāyā bhakṣitā śubhā ,
nūnaṃ vikṣipyamāṇau tau bāhū pallavakomalau.
29. komalā vilapantyāḥ tu kāntāyāḥ bhakṣitā śubhā
| nūnam vikṣipyamāṇau tau bāhū pallavakomalau
29. tu vilapantyāḥ kāntāyāḥ komalā śubhā bhakṣitā

29. Her tender and beautiful form, belonging to my lamenting beloved, must have been devoured. Indeed, those two arms, delicate as young shoots, which were being thrashed about...
भक्षितौ वेपमानाग्रौ सहस्ताभरणाङ्गदौ ।
मया विरहिता बाला रक्षसां भक्षणाय वै ॥३०॥
30. bhakṣitau vepamānāgrau sahastābharaṇāṅgadau ,
mayā virahitā bālā rakṣasāṃ bhakṣaṇāya vai.
30. bhakṣitau vepamānāgrau sahastābharaṇāṅgadau
| mayā virahitā bālā rakṣasām bhakṣaṇāya vai

30. Those two arms, whose fingertips were trembling, along with their hand-ornaments and armlets, must have been devoured. The young woman, separated from me, was surely [left] for the Rākṣasas' devouring.
सार्थेनेव परित्यक्ता भक्षिता बहुबान्धवा ।
हा लक्ष्मण महाबाहो पश्यसि त्वं प्रियां क्व चित् ॥३१॥
31. sārtheneva parityaktā bhakṣitā bahubāndhavā ,
hā lakṣmaṇa mahābāho paśyasi tvaṃ priyāṃ kva cit.
31. sārthena iva parityaktā bhakṣitā bahubāndhavā |
hā lakṣmaṇa mahābāho paśyasi tvam priyām kva cit

31. Abandoned as if by a caravan, she, whose many protectors are now absent, has been devoured. Alas, Lakshmana, O mighty-armed one, do you see my beloved anywhere?
हा प्रिये क्व गता भद्रे हा सीतेति पुनः पुनः ।
इत्येवं विलपन् रामः परिधावन् वनाद्वनम् ॥३२॥
32. hā priye kva gatā bhadre hā sīteti punaḥ punaḥ ,
ityevaṃ vilapan rāmaḥ paridhāvan vanādvanam.
32. hā priye kva gatā bhadre hā sīte iti punaḥ punaḥ
iti evam vilapan rāmaḥ paridhāvan vanāt vanam
32. rāmaḥ iti evam punaḥ punaḥ vilapan hā priye kva
gatā bhadre hā sīte iti vanāt vanam paridhāvan
32. “Oh, my beloved! Where have you gone, virtuous one? Oh, Sītā!” Thus, lamenting repeatedly, Rāma roamed from one forest to another.
क्व चिदुद्भ्रमते वेगात् क्व चिद्विभ्रमते बलात् ।
क्व चिन्मत्त इवाभाति कान्तान् वेषणतत्परः ॥३३॥
33. kva cidudbhramate vegāt kva cidvibhramate balāt ,
kva cinmatta ivābhāti kāntān veṣaṇatatparaḥ.
33. kva cit udbhramate vegāt kva cit vibhramate balāt
kva cit mattaḥ iva ābhāti kāntānveṣaṇatatparaḥ
33. kva cit vegāt udbhramate kva cit balāt vibhramate
ca kva cit kāntānveṣaṇatatparaḥ iva mattaḥ ābhāti
33. Sometimes he roams swiftly, sometimes he wanders forcefully, and at other times, intent on searching for his beloved, he appears like a madman.
स वनानि नदीः शैलान् गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च ।
काननानि च वेगेन भ्रमत्यपरिसंस्थितः ॥३४॥
34. sa vanāni nadīḥ śailān giriprasravaṇāni ca ,
kānanāni ca vegena bhramatyaparisaṃsthitaḥ.
34. saḥ vanāni nadīḥ śailān giriprasravaṇāni ca
kānanāni ca vegena bhramati aparisaṃsthitaḥ
34. saḥ aparisaṃsthitaḥ vegena vanāni nadīḥ śailān
giriprasravaṇāni ca kānanāni ca bhramati
34. He, being restless, swiftly roams through forests, rivers, mountains, mountain springs, and groves.
तथा स गत्वा विपुलं महद्वनं परीत्य सर्वं त्वथ मैथिलीं प्रति ।
अनिष्ठिताशः स चकार मार्गणे पुनः प्रियायाः परमं परिश्रमम् ॥३५॥
35. tathā sa gatvā vipulaṃ mahadvanaṃ parītya sarvaṃ tvatha maithilīṃ prati ,
aniṣṭhitāśaḥ sa cakāra mārgaṇe punaḥ priyāyāḥ paramaṃ pariśramam.
35. tathā saḥ gatvā vipulaṃ mahat vanam
parītya sarvam tu atha maithilīm
prati aniṣṭitāśaḥ saḥ cakāra mārgaṇe
punaḥ priyāyāḥ paramaṃ pariśramam
35. tathā saḥ vipulaṃ mahat vanam sarvam
maithilīm prati gatvā parītya tu
atha aniṣṭitāśaḥ saḥ punaḥ priyāyāḥ
mārgaṇe paramaṃ pariśramam cakāra
35. Having thus traversed and searched the entire vast forest for Maithilī (Sītā), he, with his hopes unfulfilled, again made a supreme effort in the search for his beloved.
