सा तु नीलेन विधिवत् स्वारक्षा सुसमाहिता ।
सागरस्योत्तरे तीरे साधु सेना निवेशिता ॥१॥

1. Indeed, that army, well-protected and meticulously arranged by Nīla according to proper procedure, was effectively stationed on the northern shore of the ocean.
मैन्दश्च द्विविधश्चोभौ तत्र वानरपुंगवौ ।
विचेरतुश्च तां सेनां रक्षार्थं सर्वतो दिशम् ॥२॥
2. maindaśca dvividhaścobhau tatra vānarapuṃgavau ,
viceratuśca tāṃ senāṃ rakṣārthaṃ sarvato diśam.
2. maindaḥ ca dvividaḥ ca ubhau tatra vānarapuṅgavau
viceratuḥ ca tām senām rakṣārtham sarvataḥ diśam

2. Both Mainda and Dvivida, those two foremost monkeys, roamed through that army in all directions to protect it.
निविष्टायां तु सेनायां तीरे नदनदीपतेः ।
पार्श्वस्थं लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. niviṣṭāyāṃ tu senāyāṃ tīre nadanadīpateḥ ,
pārśvasthaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmo vacanamabravīt.
3. niviṣṭāyām tu senāyām tīre nadanadīpateḥ
pārśvastham lakṣmaṇam dṛṣṭvā rāmaḥ vacanam abravīt
3. tu senāyām niviṣṭāyām nadanadīpateḥ tīre

3. When the army was settled on the shore of the lord of rivers (the ocean), Rāma, seeing Lakṣmaṇa standing nearby, spoke these words.
शोकश्च किल कालेन गच्छता ह्यपगच्छति ।
मम चापश्यतः कान्तामहन्यहनि वर्धते ॥४॥
4. śokaśca kila kālena gacchatā hyapagacchati ,
mama cāpaśyataḥ kāntāmahanyahani vardhate.
4. śokaḥ ca kila kālena gacchātā hi apagacchati
mama ca apaśyataḥ kāntām ahanyahani vardhate
4. kila kālena gacchātā hi śokaḥ apagacchati ca
mama kāntām apaśyataḥ ahanyahani vardhate
4. Sorrow, it is said, diminishes with the passage of time. Yet for me, not seeing my beloved, it increases day by day.
न मे दुःखं प्रिया दूरे न मे दुःखं हृतेति च ।
एतदेवानुशोचामि वयो ऽस्या ह्यतिवर्तते ॥५॥
5. na me duḥkhaṃ priyā dūre na me duḥkhaṃ hṛteti ca ,
etadevānuśocāmi vayo'syā hyativartate.
5. na me duḥkham priyā dūre na me duḥkham hṛtā iti
ca etat eva anuśocāmi vayaḥ asyāḥ hi ativartate
5. me priyā dūre na duḥkham ca me hṛtā iti na duḥkham
etat eva anuśocāmi hi asyāḥ vayaḥ ativartate
5. My grief is not that my beloved (Sītā) is far away, nor that she has been abducted. I lament only this: that her youth is, indeed, passing by.
वाहि वात यतः कन्या तां स्पृष्ट्वा मामपि स्पृश ।
त्वयि मे गात्रसंस्पर्शश्चन्द्रे दृष्टिसमागमः ॥६॥
6. vāhi vāta yataḥ kanyā tāṃ spṛṣṭvā māmapi spṛśa ,
tvayi me gātrasaṃsparśaścandre dṛṣṭisamāgamaḥ.
6. vāhi vāta yataḥ kanyā tām spṛṣṭvā mām api spṛśa
tvayi me gātrasaṃsparśaḥ candre dṛṣṭisamāgamaḥ
6. O wind, blow from where my beloved maiden resides. After you touch her, touch me too. Through you, I feel the touch of her body, and in the moon, I experience the meeting of our gazes.
तन्मे दहति गात्राणि विषं पीतमिवाशये ।
हा नाथेति प्रिया सा मां ह्रियमाणा यदब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. tanme dahati gātrāṇi viṣaṃ pītamivāśaye ,
hā nātheti priyā sā māṃ hriyamāṇā yadabravīt.
7. tat me dahati gātrāṇi viṣam pītam iva āśaye hā
nātha iti priyā sā mām hriyamāṇā yat abravīt
7. That [separation] burns my body as if I had drunk poison within. Alas, when my beloved was being carried away, she cried out to me, 'O my lord!'
तद्वियोगेन्धनवता तच्चिन्ताविपुलार्चिषा ।
रात्रिं दिवं शरीरं मे दह्यते मदनाग्निना ॥८॥
8. tadviyogendhanavatā taccintāvipulārciṣā ,
rātriṃ divaṃ śarīraṃ me dahyate madanāgninā.
8. tadvayogendhanavatā taccintāvipulārciṣā
rātrim divam śarīram me dahyate madanāgninā
8. Fueled by that separation and with immense flames born of thoughts of her, the fire of love (madana) burns my body day and night.
अवगाह्यार्णवं स्वप्स्ये सौमित्रे भवता विना ।
कथं चित् प्रज्वलन् कामः समासुप्तं जले दहेत् ॥९॥
9. avagāhyārṇavaṃ svapsye saumitre bhavatā vinā ,
kathaṃ cit prajvalan kāmaḥ samāsuptaṃ jale dahet.
9. avagāhya arṇavam svapsye saumitre bhavatā vinā
katham cit prajvalan kāmaḥ samāsuptam jale dahet
9. O Saumitra, I will plunge into the ocean and sleep without you. But how, indeed, could blazing desire (kāma) burn someone who is deeply asleep in water?
बह्वेतत् कामयानस्य शक्यमेतेन जीवितुम् ।
यदहं सा च वामोरुरेकां धरणिमाश्रितौ ॥१०॥
10. bahvetat kāmayānasya śakyametena jīvitum ,
yadahaṃ sā ca vāmorurekāṃ dharaṇimāśritau.
10. bahu etat kāmayānasya śakyam etena jīvitum
yat aham sā ca vāmorūḥ ekām dharaṇim āśritau
10. yat aham ca sā vāmorūḥ ekām dharaṇim āśritau,
etat bahu kāmayānasya etena jīvitum śakyam.
10. For one who desires so much, it is possible to sustain life on this premise: that I and she, the fair-thighed one, both reside on the same earth.
केदारस्येव केदारः सोदकस्य निरूदकः ।
उपस्नेहेन जीवामि जीवन्तीं यच्छृणोमि ताम् ॥११॥
11. kedārasyeva kedāraḥ sodakasya nirūdakaḥ ,
upasnehena jīvāmi jīvantīṃ yacchṛṇomi tām.
11. kedārasya iva kedāraḥ sodakasya nirūdakaḥ
upasnehena jīvāmi jīvantīm yat śṛṇomi tām
11. nirūdakaḥ kedāraḥ sodakasya kedārasya iva,
yat tām jīvantīm śṛṇomi,
(tena) upasnehena jīvāmi.
11. Just as a field without water is sustained by a watered field, I survive by the nourishment of merely hearing that she is still living.
कदा तु खलु सुस्शोणीं शतपत्रायतेक्षणाम् ।
विजित्य शत्रून्द्रक्ष्यामि सीतां स्फीतामिव श्रियम् ॥१२॥
12. kadā tu khalu susśoṇīṃ śatapatrāyatekṣaṇām ,
vijitya śatrūndrakṣyāmi sītāṃ sphītāmiva śriyam.
12. kadā tu khalu suśroṇīm śatapatrāyatekṣaṇām
vijitya śatrūn drakṣyāmi sītām sphītām iva śriyam
12. kadā nu khalu śatrūn vijitya suśroṇīm
śatapatrāyatekṣaṇām sītām sphītām śriyam iva drakṣyāmi?
12. When, indeed, after conquering my enemies, shall I behold Sītā - the fair-hipped one, whose eyes are like blooming lotus petals - radiant like abundant prosperity (śrī)?
कदा नु चारुबिम्बौष्ठं तस्याः पद्ममिवाननम् ।
ईषदुन्नम्य पास्यामि रसायनमिवातुरः ॥१३॥
13. kadā nu cārubimbauṣṭhaṃ tasyāḥ padmamivānanam ,
īṣadunnamya pāsyāmi rasāyanamivāturaḥ.
13. kadā nu cārubimbauṣṭham tasyāḥ padmam iva ānanam
īṣat unnamya pāsyāmi rasāyanam iva āturaḥ
13. kadā nu āturaḥ aham tasyāḥ cārubimbauṣṭham padmam
iva ānanam īṣat unnamya rasāyanam iva pāsyāmi?
13. When, indeed, shall I, afflicted by sorrow, slightly raise her lotus-like face with its beautiful, bimba-red lips, and kiss it as if it were a life-restoring elixir?
तौ तस्याः संहतौ पीनौ स्तनौ तालफलोपमौ ।
कदा नु खलु सोत्कम्पौ हसन्त्या मां भजिष्यतः ॥१४॥
14. tau tasyāḥ saṃhatau pīnau stanau tālaphalopamau ,
kadā nu khalu sotkampau hasantyā māṃ bhajiṣyataḥ.
14. tau tasyāḥ saṃhatau pīnau stanau tālaphala-upamau
kadā nu khalu sa-utkampau hasantyā mām bhajiṣyataḥ
14. When, indeed, will those two firm, plump breasts of hers, resembling palmyra fruits, which tremble when she laughs, approach me?
सा नूनमसितापाङ्गी रक्षोमध्यगता सती ।
मन्नाथा नाथहीनेव त्रातारं नाधिगच्छति ॥१५॥
15. sā nūnamasitāpāṅgī rakṣomadhyagatā satī ,
mannāthā nāthahīneva trātāraṃ nādhigacchati.
15. sā nūnam asitāpāṅgī rakṣas-madhya-gatā satī
mat-nāthā nātha-hīnā iva trātāram na adhigacchati
15. Certainly, that dark-eyed woman (Sita), though having me as her lord, being amidst the demonic beings (rākṣasas), finds no rescuer, just like one utterly deprived of a protector.
कदा विक्षोभ्य रक्षांसि सा विधूयोत्पतिष्यति ।
विधूय जलदान्नीलाञ् शशिलेखा शरत्स्विव ॥१६॥
16. kadā vikṣobhya rakṣāṃsi sā vidhūyotpatiṣyati ,
vidhūya jaladānnīlāñ śaśilekhā śaratsviva.
16. kadā vikṣobhya rakṣāṃsi sā vidhūya utpatiṣyati
vidhūya jaladān nīlān śaśilekhā śaratsu iva
16. When will she, having agitated and cast off the demonic beings (rākṣasas), rise up, just as the crescent moon (śaśilekhā) appears in autumn, having dispelled the blue clouds?
स्वभावतनुका नूनं शोकेनानशनेन च ।
भूयस्तनुतरा सीता देशकालविपर्ययात् ॥१७॥
17. svabhāvatanukā nūnaṃ śokenānaśanena ca ,
bhūyastanutarā sītā deśakālaviparyayāt.
17. svabhāva-tanukā nūnam śokena anaśanena ca
bhūyas tanutarā sītā deśa-kāla-viparyayāt
17. Sita, who is naturally slender, is surely made even thinner by sorrow and fasting, aggravated by this adverse change of place and time.
कदा नु राक्षसेन्द्रस्य निधायोरसि सायकान् ।
सीतां प्रत्याहरिष्यामि शोकमुत्सृज्य मानसं ॥१८॥
18. kadā nu rākṣasendrasya nidhāyorasi sāyakān ,
sītāṃ pratyāhariṣyāmi śokamutsṛjya mānasaṃ.
18. kadā nu rākṣasendrasya nidhāya urasi sāyakān
sītām pratyāhariṣyāmi śokam utsṛjya mānasam
18. kadā nu rākṣasendrasya urasi sāyakān nidhāya
sītām pratyāhariṣyāmi mānasam śokam utsṛjya
18. When, indeed, will I pierce the chest of the king of rākṣasas with arrows, retrieve Sītā, and abandon this mental anguish?
कदा नु खलु मां साध्वी सीतामरसुतोपमा ।
सोत्कण्ठा कण्ठमालम्ब्य मोक्ष्यत्यानन्दजं जलम् ॥१९॥
19. kadā nu khalu māṃ sādhvī sītāmarasutopamā ,
sotkaṇṭhā kaṇṭhamālambya mokṣyatyānandajaṃ jalam.
19. kadā nu khalu mām sādhvī sītā amarasutopamā
sotkaṇṭhā kaṇṭham ālambya mokṣyati ānandajam jalam
19. kadā nu khalu sādhvī sītā amarasutopamā sotkaṇṭhā
kaṇṭham ālambya mām ānandajam jalam mokṣyati
19. When, indeed, will the virtuous Sītā, who resembles a daughter of the gods, full of longing, embrace my neck and shed tears of joy upon me?
कदा शोकमिमं घोरं मैथिली विप्रयोगजम् ।
सहसा विप्रमोक्ष्यामि वासः शुक्लेतरं यथा ॥२०॥
20. kadā śokamimaṃ ghoraṃ maithilī viprayogajam ,
sahasā vipramokṣyāmi vāsaḥ śukletaraṃ yathā.
20. kadā śokam imam ghoram maithilī viprayogajam
sahasā vipramokṣyāmi vāsaḥ śukletaram yathā
20. kadā sahasā maithilī viprayogajam imam ghoram
śokam yathā śukletaram vāsaḥ vipramokṣyāmi
20. When will I suddenly cast off this terrible grief, born of separation from Maithilī, just as one discards a soiled garment?
एवं विलपतस्तस्य तत्र रामस्य धीमतः ।
दिनक्षयान्मन्दवपुर्भास्करो ऽस्तमुपागमत् ॥२१॥
21. evaṃ vilapatastasya tatra rāmasya dhīmataḥ ,
dinakṣayānmandavapurbhāskaro'stamupāgamat.
21. evam vilapataḥ tasya tatra rāmasya dhīmataḥ
dinakṣayāt mandavapuḥ bhāskaraḥ astam upāgamat
21. evaṃ tatra vilapataḥ tasya rāmasya dhīmataḥ
dinakṣayāt mandavapuḥ bhāskaraḥ astam upāgamat
21. While the wise Rāma was lamenting in this manner there, the sun, with its brilliance diminished by the end of the day, went to set.
आश्वासितो लक्ष्मणेन रामः संध्यामुपासत ।
स्मरन् कमलपत्राक्षीं सीतां शोकाकुलीकृतः ॥२२॥
22. āśvāsito lakṣmaṇena rāmaḥ saṃdhyāmupāsata ,
smaran kamalapatrākṣīṃ sītāṃ śokākulīkṛtaḥ.
22. āśvāsitaḥ lakṣmaṇena rāmaḥ sandhyām upāsata
smaran kamalapattrākṣīm sītām śokākulīkṛtaḥ
22. lakṣmaṇena āśvāsitaḥ śokākulīkṛtaḥ rāmaḥ
kamalapattrākṣīm sītām smaran sandhyām upāsata
22. Comforted by Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma performed his evening prayers. Remembering Sītā, whose eyes were like lotus petals, he was overcome with grief.
