Then, at some point in time, an intense, embodied sleep (nidrā), released by the lord of the worlds (Brahman), arose for Kumbhakarṇa.

Then Kumbhakarṇa spoke these words to his seated brother: "O King, sleep (nidrā) troubles me. Please have a dwelling built for me."
विनियुक्तास्ततो राज्ञा शिल्पिनो विश्वकर्मवत् ।
अकुर्वन् कुम्भकर्णस्य कैलाससममालयम् ॥३॥

Then, craftsmen who were appointed by the king, and were like Viśvakarman (the divine architect), constructed a dwelling for Kumbhakarṇa that resembled Mount Kailāsa.
विस्तीर्णं योजनं शुभ्रं ततो द्विगुणमायतम् ।
दर्शनीयं निराबाधं कुम्भकर्णस्य चक्रिरे ॥४॥

4. vistīrṇaṃ yojanaṃ śubhraṃ tato dviguṇamāyatam ,

They constructed for Kumbhakarṇa a dwelling that was a yojana wide, shining white, twice as long, beautiful to behold, and free from any impediments.
स्फाटिकैः काञ्चनैश्चित्रैः स्तम्भैः सर्वत्र शोभितम् ।
वैदूर्यकृतशोभं च किङ्किणीजालकं तथा ॥५॥

5. sphāṭikaiḥ kāñcanaiścitraiḥ stambhaiḥ sarvatra śobhitam ,

It was adorned everywhere with variegated pillars of crystal and gold, and enhanced by the splendor of lapis lazuli and networks of small bells.
दन्ततोरणविन्यस्तं वज्रस्फटिकवेदिकम् ।
सर्वर्तुसुखदं नित्यं मेरोः पुण्यां गुहामिव ॥६॥

6. dantatoraṇavinyastaṃ vajrasphaṭikavedikam ,
sarvartusukhadaṃ nityaṃ meroḥ puṇyāṃ guhāmiva.

It was adorned with arches of ivory and had altars made of diamond and crystal, always providing comfort in all seasons, like a sacred cave of Mount Meru.
तत्र निद्रां समाविष्टः कुम्भकर्णो निशाचरः ।
बहून्यब्दसहस्राणि शयानो नावबुध्यते ॥७॥

7. tatra nidrāṃ samāviṣṭaḥ kumbhakarṇo niśācaraḥ ,

There, the night-demon, Kumbhakarna, overwhelmed by sleep, lies dormant, not waking up for many thousands of years.

But then, with Kumbhakarna overcome by sleep, Ravana, the ten-headed one, would constantly torment the gods, sages, yakṣas, and gandharvas.
उद्यानानि विचित्राणि नन्दनादीनि यानि च ।
तानि गत्वा सुसंक्रुद्धो भिनत्ति स्म दशाननः ॥९॥

9. udyānāni vicitrāṇi nandanādīni yāni ca ,

Daśānana (Rāvaṇa), exceedingly enraged, would go to those various gardens, including Nandana, and destroy them.
नदीं गज इव क्रीडन् वृक्षान् वायुरिव क्षिपन् ।
नगान् वज्र इव सृष्टो विध्वंसयति नित्यशः ॥१०॥

10. nadīṃ gaja iva krīḍan vṛkṣān vāyuriva kṣipan ,

10.
Constantly, like an elephant playing in a river, like the wind scattering trees, or like an unleashed thunderbolt, he (Daśānana) demolishes mountains.
तथा वृत्तं तु विज्ञाय दशग्रीवं धनेश्वरः ।
कुलानुरूपं धर्मज्ञ वृत्तं संस्मृत्य चात्मनः ॥११॥

11. tathā vṛttaṃ tu vijñāya daśagrīvaṃ dhaneśvaraḥ ,

Having thus learned of Daśagrīva's conduct, and remembering his own conduct, which was suitable for his family and befitting a knower of (natural) law (dharma), Kubera (Dhaneśvara)...
सौभ्रात्रदर्शनार्थं तु दूतं वैश्वरणस्तदा ।
लङ्कां संप्रेषयामास दशग्रीवस्य वै हितम् ॥१२॥

Then, Kubera (Vaiśvaraṇa), indeed, sent a messenger to Laṅkā for the purpose of demonstrating brotherly affection and for Daśagrīva's well-being.
स गत्वा नगरीं लङ्कामाससाद विभीषणम् ।
मानितस्तेन धर्मेण पृष्ठश्चागमनं प्रति ॥१३॥

Upon arriving in the city of Lanka, he met Vibhishana. Vibhishana honored him according to proper conduct (dharma) and questioned him about his arrival.
पृष्ट्वा च कुशलं राज्ञो ज्ञातीनपि च बान्धवान् ।
सभायां दर्शयामास तमासीनं दशाननम् ॥१४॥

After inquiring about the welfare of the king, his kinsmen, and relatives, he (Hanuman) then saw the ten-headed (Daśānana) Ravana, who was seated in the assembly hall.
स दृष्ट्वा तत्र राजानं दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा ।
जयेन चाभिसंपूज्य तूष्णीमासीन्मुहूर्तकम् ॥१५॥

Having seen the king there, blazing with his own splendor, he greeted him with a salutation of victory and then remained silent for a moment.

When an excellent couch covered with fine bedding was brought for him, the messenger sat down and then addressed the ten-necked (Daśagrīva) Ravana with these words.
राजन् वदामि ते सर्वं भ्राता तव यदब्रवीत् ।
उभयोः सदृशं सौम्य वृत्तस्य च कुलस्य च ॥१७॥

O King, I will tell you everything that your brother said. O gentle one, this is fitting for both your character and your lineage.
साधु पर्याप्तमेतावत् कृतश्चारित्रसंग्रहः ।
साधु धर्मे व्यवस्थानं क्रियतां यदि शक्यते ॥१८॥

Excellent, this much information about his character is sufficient. Good, let order regarding the natural law (dharma) be established, if it is possible.

I saw the Nandana grove destroyed, and I heard that the sages were slain. O King, I also heard from you about the great endeavor of the gods.
निराकृतश्च बहुशस्त्वयाहं राक्षसाधिप ।
अपराद्धा हि बाल्याच्च रक्षणीयाः स्वबान्धवाः ॥२०॥

20.
O lord of rākṣasas, I have been repeatedly rejected by you. Indeed, one's own relatives should be protected, even if they have committed offenses due to immaturity.
अहं तु हिमवत्पृष्ठं गतो धर्ममुपासितुम् ।
रौद्रं व्रतं समास्थाय नियतो नियतेन्द्रियः ॥२१॥

I, however, went to the peak of Himavat (the Himalayas) to observe my spiritual duty (dharma), having undertaken a severe vow, self-controlled and with my senses restrained.
तत्र देवो मया दृष्टः सह देव्योमया प्रभुः ।
सव्यं चक्षुर्मया चैव तत्र देव्यां निपातितम् ॥२२॥

22. tatra devo mayā dṛṣṭaḥ saha devyomayā prabhuḥ ,

There, I saw the lord god with the goddess Umā. And my left eye was cast upon that goddess there.
का न्वियं स्यादिति शुभा न खल्वन्येन हेतुना ।

"Who indeed could this beautiful one be?" I wondered; it was not for any other reason, but because Pārvatī herself was playing there, having assumed an incomparable form.
ततो देव्याः प्रभावेन दग्धं सव्यं ममेक्षणम् ।
रेणुध्वस्तमिव ज्योतिः पिङ्गलत्वमुपागतम् ॥२४॥

24. tato devyāḥ prabhāvena dagdhaṃ savyaṃ mamekṣaṇam ,

Then, by the power of the goddess, my left eye was burnt, becoming yellowish-brown, like a flame obscured by dust.
ततो ऽहमन्यद्विस्तीर्णं गत्वा तस्य गिरेस्तटम् ।
पूर्णं वर्षशतान्यष्टौ समवाप महाव्रतम् ॥२५॥

25. tato'hamanyadvistīrṇaṃ gatvā tasya girestaṭam ,

Then, having gone to another vast slope of that mountain, I observed a complete great vow for eight centuries.
समाप्ते नियमे तस्मिंस्तत्र देवो महेश्वरः ।
प्रीतः प्रीतेन मनसा प्राह वाक्यमिदं प्रभुः ॥२६॥

26. samāpte niyame tasmiṃstatra devo maheśvaraḥ ,

When that observance (niyama) was completed, then the supreme Lord (prabhu), Maheśvara (Maheśvara), the God, pleased in mind, spoke these words.
प्रीतो ऽस्मि तव धर्मज्ञ तपसानेन सुव्रत ।
मया चैतद्व्रतं चीर्णं त्वया चैव धनाधिप ॥२७॥

27. prīto'smi tava dharmajña tapasānena suvrata ,

O knower of (natural) law (dharma), O good observer of vows, I am pleased with this asceticism (tapas) of yours. This vow has been observed by me, and indeed, by you also, O lord of wealth (dhanādhipa).
तृतीयः पुरुषो नास्ति यश्चरेद्व्रतमीदृशम् ।
व्रतं सुदुश्चरं ह्येतन्मयैवोत्पादितं पुरा ॥२८॥

28. tṛtīyaḥ puruṣo nāsti yaścaredvratamīdṛśam ,

There is no third person (puruṣa) who could perform such a vow. Indeed, this vow is extremely difficult to observe; it was created by me alone in ancient times.
तत् सखित्वं मया सार्धं रोचयस्व धनेश्वर ।
तपसा निर्जितत्वाद्धि सखा भव ममानघ ॥२९॥

29. tat sakhitvaṃ mayā sārdhaṃ rocayasva dhaneśvara ,
tapasā nirjitatvāddhi sakhā bhava mamānagha.

O lord of wealth (dhaneśvara), O blameless one, desire that friendship with me. Indeed, because you have been subdued by my austerity (tapas), become my friend.
देव्या दग्धं प्रभावेन यच्च साव्यं तवेक्षणम् ।
एकाक्षि पिङ्गलेत्येव नाम स्थास्यति शाश्वतम् ॥३०॥

30. devyā dagdhaṃ prabhāvena yacca sāvyaṃ tavekṣaṇam ,
ekākṣi piṅgaletyeva nāma sthāsyati śāśvatam.

devyā dagdham prabhāveṇa yat ca savyam tava īkṣaṇam

And because your left eye was burned by the power of the Goddess, the name 'One-eyed, Tawny' (ekākṣi piṅgalā) will remain eternally.
एवं तेन सखित्वं च प्राप्यानुज्ञां च शंकरात् ।
आगम्य च श्रुतो ऽयं मे तव पापविनिश्चयः ॥३१॥

31. evaṃ tena sakhitvaṃ ca prāpyānujñāṃ ca śaṃkarāt ,

Thus, after I obtained both friendship with him and permission from Śaṅkara, and having returned, this definitive decision regarding your sin has been heard by me.
तदधर्मिष्ठसंयोगान्निवर्त कुलदूषण ।
चिन्त्यते हि वधोपायः सर्षिसंघैः सुरैस्तव ॥३२॥

32. tadadharmiṣṭhasaṃyogānnivarta kuladūṣaṇa ,
cintyate hi vadhopāyaḥ sarṣisaṃghaiḥ suraistava.

tat adharmiṣṭhasaṃyogāt nivarta kuladūṣaṇa |

kuladūṣaṇa tat adharmiṣṭhasaṃyogāt nivarta hi
tava vadhopāyaḥ saṛṣisaṃghaiḥ suraiḥ cintyate
tava vadhopāyaḥ saṛṣisaṃghaiḥ suraiḥ cintyate
32.
Therefore, turn away from association with the most unrighteous, O disgrace to your lineage. Indeed, a means of your destruction is being pondered by the gods who are accompanied by the assemblies of sages.
एवमुक्तो दशग्रीवः क्रुद्धः संरक्तलोचनः ।
हस्तान्दन्तांश् अ संपीड्य वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥३३॥

33. evamukto daśagrīvaḥ kruddhaḥ saṃraktalocanaḥ ,

Thus addressed, Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa), enraged and with blood-red eyes, clenching his hands and teeth, spoke these words.
विज्ञातं ते मया दूत वाक्यं यत्त्वं प्रभाषसे ।
नैव त्वमसि नैवासौ भ्रात्रा येनासि प्रेषितः ॥३४॥

34. vijñātaṃ te mayā dūta vākyaṃ yattvaṃ prabhāṣase ,
naiva tvamasi naivāsau bhrātrā yenāsi preṣitaḥ.

34.
"O messenger, I have understood the words that you speak. You are certainly not (the messenger I acknowledge), nor is that person (Rāma) the brother by whom you were sent (in a legitimate capacity)."
हितं न स ममैतद्धि ब्रवीति धनरक्षकः ।
महेश्वरसखित्वं तु मूढ श्रावयसे किल ॥३५॥

35. hitaṃ na sa mamaitaddhi bravīti dhanarakṣakaḥ ,

"That guardian of wealth (Kubera) does not speak this beneficial advice to me. But, foolish one, you indeed proclaim your friendship with Maheśvara (Śiva)!"
न हन्तव्यो गुरुर्ज्येष्ठो ममायमिति मन्यते ।
तस्य त्विदानीं श्रुत्वा मे वाक्यमेषा कृता मतिः ॥३६॥

36. na hantavyo gururjyeṣṭho mamāyamiti manyate ,
tasya tvidānīṃ śrutvā me vākyameṣā kṛtā matiḥ.

na hantavyaḥ guruḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ mama ayam iti manyate
tasya tu idānīm śrutvā me vākyam eṣā kṛtā matiḥ

(saḥ) ayam mama jyeṣṭhaḥ guruḥ na hantavyaḥ iti manyate.
tu idānīm tasya vākyam śrutvā,
eṣā matiḥ me kṛtā.

36.
"He (Vibhīṣaṇa) believes: 'This elder, respected one (guru) of mine should not be harmed.' But now, having heard his words, this decision has been made by me (Rāvaṇa)."
त्रींल् लोकानपि जेष्यामि बाहुवीर्यमुपाश्रितः ।
एतन्मुहूर्तमेषो ऽहं तस्यैकस्य कृते च वै ।
चतुरो लोकपालांस्तान्नयिष्यामि यमक्षयम् ॥३७॥
एतन्मुहूर्तमेषो ऽहं तस्यैकस्य कृते च वै ।
चतुरो लोकपालांस्तान्नयिष्यामि यमक्षयम् ॥३७॥
37. trīṃl lokānapi jeṣyāmi bāhuvīryamupāśritaḥ ,
etanmuhūrtameṣo'haṃ tasyaikasya kṛte ca vai ,
caturo lokapālāṃstānnayiṣyāmi yamakṣayam.

aham bāhuvīryam upāśritaḥ api trīn lokān jeṣyāmi.

37.
Relying on the might of my arms, I will conquer even the three worlds. At this very moment, for the sake of that one (Kubera), I will indeed lead those four world-guardians to the abode of Yama, the lord of death.
एवमुक्त्वा तु लङ्केशो दूतं खड्गेन जघ्निवान् ।
ददौ भक्षयितुं ह्येनं राक्षसानां दुरात्मनाम् ॥३८॥

38. evamuktvā tu laṅkeśo dūtaṃ khaḍgena jaghnivān ,

Having spoken thus, the lord of Laṅkā (Rāvaṇa) struck down the messenger with a sword. He then gave him to the malevolent rākṣasas to be devoured.
ततः कृतस्वस्त्ययनो रथमारुह्य रावणः ।
त्रैलोक्यविजयाकाङ्क्षी ययौ तत्र धनेश्वरः ॥३९॥

Then, having performed auspicious rites, Rāvaṇa, aspiring for the conquest of the three worlds, mounted his chariot and went there, to the lord of wealth (Kubera).
