1. Where the lord of demons, Rāvaṇa, performs a flower offering on the bank of the Narmada, not far from that very spot.
अर्जुनो जयतां श्रेष्ठो माहिष्मत्याः पतिः प्रभुः ।
क्रीडिते सह नारीभिर्नर्मदातोयमाश्रितः ॥२॥
2. arjuno jayatāṃ śreṣṭho māhiṣmatyāḥ patiḥ prabhuḥ ,

2. Arjuna, the mighty lord of Māhiṣmatī and best among conquerors, was playing with women, having taken refuge in the waters of the Narmada.
तासां मध्यगतो राज रराज स ततो ऽर्जुनः ।
करेणूनां सहस्रस्य मध्यस्थ इव कुञ्जरः ॥३॥
3. tāsāṃ madhyagato rāja rarāja sa tato'rjunaḥ ,
kareṇūnāṃ sahasrasya madhyastha iva kuñjaraḥ.

3. O King, then Arjuna shone brightly in their midst, just like a bull elephant positioned among a thousand female elephants.
जिज्ञासुः स तु बाहूनां सहस्रस्योत्तमं बलम् ।
रुरोध नर्मदा वेगं बाहुभिः स तदार्जुनः ॥४॥
4. jijñāsuḥ sa tu bāhūnāṃ sahasrasyottamaṃ balam ,
rurodha narmadā vegaṃ bāhubhiḥ sa tadārjunaḥ.

4. Curious about the supreme power of his thousand arms, that Arjuna (Kārtavīrya) then blocked the current of the Narmada with his arms.
कार्तवीर्यभुजासेतुं तज्जलं प्राप्य निर्मलम् ।
कूलापहारं कुर्वाणं प्रतिस्रोतः प्रधावति ॥५॥
5. kārtavīryabhujāsetuṃ tajjalaṃ prāpya nirmalam ,
kūlāpahāraṃ kurvāṇaṃ pratisrotaḥ pradhāvati.

5. Having reached that clear water, which had been dammed by Kārtavīrya's arms, the river's current then flowed upstream, causing the erosion of its banks.
समीननक्रमकरः सपुष्पकुशसंस्तरः ।
स नर्मदाम्भसो वेगः प्रावृट्काल इवाबभौ ॥६॥
6. samīnanakramakaraḥ sapuṣpakuśasaṃstaraḥ ,
sa narmadāmbhaso vegaḥ prāvṛṭkāla ivābabhau.
6. sa mīna nakra makaraḥ sa puṣpa kuśa saṃstaraḥ
saḥ narmadāmbhasaḥ vegaḥ prāvṛṭ kālaḥ iva ababhau

6. That current of the Narmada's waters, filled with fish, alligators, and crocodiles, and strewn with flowers and kuśa grass, appeared as magnificent as the rainy season.
स वेगः कार्तवीर्येण संप्रेषिट इवाम्भसः ।
पुष्पोपहारं तत् सर्वं रावणस्य जहार ह ॥७॥
7. sa vegaḥ kārtavīryeṇa saṃpreṣiṭa ivāmbhasaḥ ,
puṣpopahāraṃ tat sarvaṃ rāvaṇasya jahāra ha.
7. saḥ vegaḥ kārtavīryeṇa sampreṣitaḥ iva ambhasaḥ
puṣpa upahāram tat sarvam rāvaṇasya jahāra ha

7. That current, as if deliberately dispatched by Kārtavīrya from the waters, indeed swept away all of Ravana's flower offerings.
रावणो ऽर्धसमाप्तं तु उत्सृज्य नियमं तदा ।
नर्मदां पश्यते कान्तां प्रतिकूलां यथा प्रियाम् ॥८॥
8. rāvaṇo'rdhasamāptaṃ tu utsṛjya niyamaṃ tadā ,
narmadāṃ paśyate kāntāṃ pratikūlāṃ yathā priyām.
8. rāvaṇaḥ ardhasamāptam tu utsṛjya niyamam tadā |
narmadām paśyate kāntām pratikūlām yathā priyām

8. Rāvaṇa then, abandoning his half-completed vow (niyama), saw the beautiful Narmadā river, which appeared adverse, much like a displeased beloved woman.
पश्चिमेन तु तं दृष्ट्वा सागरोद्गारसंनिभम् ।
वर्धन्तमम्भसो वेगं पूर्वामाशां प्रविश्य तु ॥९॥
9. paścimena tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā sāgarodgārasaṃnibham ,
vardhantamambhaso vegaṃ pūrvāmāśāṃ praviśya tu.

9. Then, having seen from the west that increasing current of water, which resembled an ocean's outpouring, he then entered the eastern direction.
ततो ऽनुद्भ्रान्तशकुनां स्वाभाव्ये परमे स्थिताम् ।
निर्विकाराङ्गनाभासां पश्यते रावणो नदीम् ॥१०॥
10. tato'nudbhrāntaśakunāṃ svābhāvye parame sthitām ,
nirvikārāṅganābhāsāṃ paśyate rāvaṇo nadīm.
10. tataḥ anudbhrāntaśakunām svābhāvye parame sthitām
| nirvikārāṅganābhāsām paśyate rāvaṇaḥ nadīm

10. Then Rāvaṇa saw the river, where birds were not agitated, abiding in its perfectly natural state, and resembling a woman free from all disturbance.
सव्येतरकराङ्गुल्या सशब्दं च दशाननः ।
वेगप्रभवमन्वेष्टुं सो ऽदिशच्छुकसारणौ ॥११॥
11. savyetarakarāṅgulyā saśabdaṃ ca daśānanaḥ ,
vegaprabhavamanveṣṭuṃ so'diśacchukasāraṇau.
11. savyetarakarāṅgulyā saśabdam ca daśānanaḥ |
vegaprabhavam anveṣṭum saḥ adiśat śukasāraṇau

11. And Daśānana (Rāvaṇa), loudly with the finger of his right hand, ordered Śuka and Sāraṇa to investigate the source of the current.
तौ तु रावणसंदिष्टौ भ्रातरौ शुकसारणौ ।
व्योमान्तरचरौ वीरौ प्रस्थितौ पश्चिमोन्मुखौ ॥१२॥
12. tau tu rāvaṇasaṃdiṣṭau bhrātarau śukasāraṇau ,
vyomāntaracarau vīrau prasthitau paścimonmukhau.

12. Indeed, those two valiant brothers, Śuka and Sāraṇa, sent by Rāvaṇa, who move through the sky, set out facing west.
अर्धयोजनमात्रं तु गत्वा तौ तु निशाचरौ ।
पश्येतां पुरुषं तोये क्रीडन्तं सहयोषितम् ॥१३॥
13. ardhayojanamātraṃ tu gatvā tau tu niśācarau ,
paśyetāṃ puruṣaṃ toye krīḍantaṃ sahayoṣitam.

13. Having gone only half a yojana, those two night-wanderers indeed saw a man playing in the water with women.
बृहत्सालप्रतीकशं तोयव्याकुलमूर्धजम् ।
मदरक्तान्तनयनं मदनाकारवर्चसं ॥१४॥
14. bṛhatsālapratīkaśaṃ toyavyākulamūrdhajam ,
madaraktāntanayanaṃ madanākāravarcasaṃ.

14. He resembled a large śāla tree, his hair disheveled by the water, his eyes red at the corners from intoxication, and his splendor like the form of the god of love (Madana).
नदीं बाहुसहस्रेण रुन्धन्तमरिमर्दनम् ।
गिरिं पादसहस्रेण रुन्धन्तमिव मेदिनीम् ॥१५॥
15. nadīṃ bāhusahasreṇa rundhantamarimardanam ,
giriṃ pādasahasreṇa rundhantamiva medinīm.
15. nadīm bāhusahasreṇa rundhantam arimardanam
girim pādasahasreṇa rundhantam iva medinīm
15. arimardanam nadīm bāhusahasreṇa rundhantam,

15. He was the vanquisher of foes, obstructing the river with a thousand arms, just as a mountain obstructs the earth with a thousand feet.
बालानां वरनारीणां सहस्रेणाभिसंवृतम् ।
समदानां करेणूनां सहस्रेणेव कुञ्जरम् ॥१६॥
16. bālānāṃ varanārīṇāṃ sahasreṇābhisaṃvṛtam ,
samadānāṃ kareṇūnāṃ sahasreṇeva kuñjaram.
16. bālānām varanārīṇām sahasreṇa abhisaṃvṛtam
samadānām kareṇūnām sahasreṇa iva kuñjaram

16. He was surrounded by thousands of beautiful young women, just as a male elephant is encircled by thousands of rutting female elephants.
तमद्भुततमं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसौ शुकसारणौ ।
संनिवृत्ताव् उपागम्य रावणं तमथोचतुः ॥१७॥
17. tamadbhutatamaṃ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasau śukasāraṇau ,
saṃnivṛttāv upāgamya rāvaṇaṃ tamathocatuḥ.
17. tam adbhutatamam dṛṣṭvā rākṣasau śukasāraṇau
saṃnivṛttau upāgamya rāvaṇam tam atha ūcatuḥ

17. Having seen that most astonishing being, the two rākṣasas, Śuka and Sāraṇa, returned, approached Rāvaṇa, and then spoke to him.
बृहत्सालप्रतीकाशः को ऽप्यसौ राक्षसेश्वर ।
नर्मदां रोधवद् रुद्ध्वा क्रीडापयति योषितः ॥१८॥
18. bṛhatsālapratīkāśaḥ ko'pyasau rākṣaseśvara ,
narmadāṃ rodhavad ruddhvā krīḍāpayati yoṣitaḥ.
18. bṛhatsālaprātīkāśaḥ kaḥ api asau rākṣaseśvara
narmadām rodhavat ruddhvā krīḍāpayati yoṣitaḥ
18. rākṣaseśvara,
kaḥ api asau bṛhatsālaprātīkāśaḥ narmadām rodhavat ruddhvā yoṣitaḥ krīḍāpayati
18. O Lord of rākṣasas (rākṣaseśvara), who might that be, resembling a mighty śāla tree? He is obstructing the Narmadā river as if with a dam and making the women play.
तेन बाहुसहस्रेण संनिरुद्धजला नदी ।
सागरोद्गारसंकाशानुद्गारान् सृजते मुहुः ॥१९॥
19. tena bāhusahasreṇa saṃniruddhajalā nadī ,
sāgarodgārasaṃkāśānudgārān sṛjate muhuḥ.

sāgarodgārasaṃkāśān udgārān sṛjate muhuḥ

19. By his thousand arms, the river, with its waters completely obstructed, repeatedly generates discharges that resemble oceanic eruptions.
इत्येवं भाषमाणौ तौ निशम्य शुकसारणौ ।
रावणो ऽर्जुन इत्युक्त्वा उत्तस्थौ युद्धलालसः ॥२०॥
20. ityevaṃ bhāṣamāṇau tau niśamya śukasāraṇau ,
rāvaṇo'rjuna ityuktvā uttasthau yuddhalālasaḥ.
20. iti evam bhāṣamāṇau tau niśamya śukasāraṇau
rāvaṇaḥ arjunaḥ iti uktvā uttastheau yuddhalālasaḥ
20. iti evam bhāṣamāṇau tau śukasāraṇau niśamya
rāvaṇaḥ arjunaḥ iti uktvā yuddhalālasaḥ uttastheau
20. Having heard Shuka and Sāraṇa speaking thus, Rāvaṇa, exclaiming "It is Arjuna!", stood up, eager for battle.
अर्जुनाभिमुखे तस्मिन्प्रस्थिते राक्षसेश्वरे ।
सकृदेव कृतो रावः सरक्तः प्रेषितो घनैः ॥२१॥
21. arjunābhimukhe tasminprasthite rākṣaseśvare ,
sakṛdeva kṛto rāvaḥ saraktaḥ preṣito ghanaiḥ.
21. arjunābhimukhe tasmin prasthite rākṣaseśvare
sakṛt eva kṛtaḥ rāvaḥ saraktāḥ preṣitaḥ ghanaiḥ
21. tasmin rākṣaseśvare arjunābhimukhe prasthite

21. When that lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) set out, facing Arjuna, a fierce roar, full of wrath, was immediately emitted as if by thunderous clouds.
महोदरमहापार्श्वधूम्राक्षशुकसारणैः ।
संवृतो राक्षसेन्द्रस्तु तत्रागाद् यत्र सो ऽर्जुनः ॥२२॥
22. mahodaramahāpārśvadhūmrākṣaśukasāraṇaiḥ ,
saṃvṛto rākṣasendrastu tatrāgād yatra so'rjunaḥ.
22. mahodaramahāpārśvadhūmrākṣaśukasāraṇaiḥ saṃvṛtaḥ
rākṣasendraḥ tu tatra agāt yatra saḥ arjunaḥ

22. Surrounded by Mahodara, Mahāpārśva, Dhūmrākṣa, Shuka, and Sāraṇa, that lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) indeed arrived where Arjuna was.
नातिदीर्घेण कालेन स ततो राक्षसो बली ।
तं नर्मदा ह्रदं भीममाजगामाञ्जनप्रभः ॥२३॥
23. nātidīrgheṇa kālena sa tato rākṣaso balī ,
taṃ narmadā hradaṃ bhīmamājagāmāñjanaprabhaḥ.
23. na atidīrgheṇa kālena saḥ tataḥ rākṣasaḥ balī
tam narmadā hradam bhīmam ājagāma añjanaprabhaḥ
23. na atidīrgheṇa kālena saḥ tataḥ balī rākṣasaḥ
añjanaprabhaḥ tam bhīmam narmadā hradam ājagāma
23. Not long thereafter, that mighty rākṣasa, dark as collyrium, arrived at that formidable Narmadā pool.
स तत्र स्त्रीपरिवृतं वाशिताभिरिव द्विपम् ।
नरेन्द्रं पश्यते राजा राक्षसानां तदार्जुनम् ॥२४॥
24. sa tatra strīparivṛtaṃ vāśitābhiriva dvipam ,
narendraṃ paśyate rājā rākṣasānāṃ tadārjunam.

narendram paśyate rājā rākṣasānām tat arjunam

24. The king of the rākṣasas (demons) sees Arjuna there, surrounded by women, just like an elephant surrounded by female elephants.
स रोषाद् रक्तनयनो राक्षसेन्द्रो बलोद्धतः ।
इत्येवमर्जुनामात्यानाह गम्भीरया गिरा ॥२५॥
25. sa roṣād raktanayano rākṣasendro baloddhataḥ ,
ityevamarjunāmātyānāha gambhīrayā girā.
25. sa roṣāt raktanayanaḥ rākṣasendraḥ baloddhataḥ
iti evam arjunāmātyān āha gambhīrayā girā

25. He, the king of rākṣasas (demons), red-eyed from anger and arrogant due to his strength, spoke thus to Arjuna's ministers with a deep voice.
अमात्याः क्षिप्रमाख्यात हैहयस्य नृपस्य वै ।
युद्धार्थं समनुप्राप्तो रावणो नाम नामतः ॥२६॥
26. amātyāḥ kṣipramākhyāta haihayasya nṛpasya vai ,
yuddhārthaṃ samanuprāpto rāvaṇo nāma nāmataḥ.

yuddhārtham samanuprāptaḥ rāvaṇaḥ nāma nāmataḥ

26. O Ministers, quickly inform the Haihaya king that one named Rāvaṇa has arrived for battle.
रावणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा मन्त्रिणो ऽथार्जुनस्य ते ।
उत्तस्थुः सायुधास्तं च रावणं वाक्यमब्रुवन् ॥२७॥
27. rāvaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā mantriṇo'thārjunasya te ,
uttasthuḥ sāyudhāstaṃ ca rāvaṇaṃ vākyamabruvan.
27. rāvaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā mantriṇaḥ atha arjunasya te
uttasthuḥ sāyudhāḥ tam ca rāvaṇam vākyam abruvan

27. Having heard Rāvaṇa's words, those ministers of Arjuna then stood up, armed, and spoke these words to Rāvaṇa.
युद्धस्य कालो विज्ञातः साधु भोः साधु रावण ।
यः क्षीबं स्त्रीवृतं चैव योद्धुमिच्छसि नो नृपम् ।
वाशितामध्यगं मत्तं शार्दूल इव कुञ्जरम् ॥२८॥
28. yuddhasya kālo vijñātaḥ sādhu bhoḥ sādhu rāvaṇa ,
yaḥ kṣībaṃ strīvṛtaṃ caiva yoddhumicchasi no nṛpam ,
vāśitāmadhyagaṃ mattaṃ śārdūla iva kuñjaram.
28. yuddhasya kālaḥ vijñātaḥ sādhu bhoḥ
sādhu rāvaṇa yaḥ kṣībaṃ strīvṛtaṃ ca
eva yoddhum icchasi naḥ nṛpam
vāśitāmadhyagam mattaṃ śārdūlaḥ iva kuñjaram
28. bhoḥ rāvaṇa yuddhasya kālaḥ vijñātaḥ
sādhu sādhu yaḥ kṣībaṃ strīvṛtaṃ
naḥ nṛpam yoddhum icchasi śārdūlaḥ
iva vāśitāmadhyagam mattaṃ kuñjaram
28. The time for battle is truly known. Bravo, Rāvaṇa, bravo! You wish to fight our king, who is intoxicated and surrounded by women, just like a tiger desires to attack an intoxicated elephant amidst its herd of females.
क्षमस्वाद्य दशग्रीव उष्यतां रजनी त्वया ।
युद्धश्रद्धा तु यद्यस्ति श्वस्तात समरे ऽर्जुनम् ॥२९॥
29. kṣamasvādya daśagrīva uṣyatāṃ rajanī tvayā ,
yuddhaśraddhā tu yadyasti śvastāta samare'rjunam.
29. kṣamasva adya daśagrīva uṣyatām rajanī tvayā
yuddhaśraddhā tu yadi asti śvaḥ tāta samare arjunam
29. daśagrīva adya kṣamasva rajanī tvayā uṣyatām tu

29. Bear with us today, O Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa); let this night be spent by you. But if you truly have a longing (śraddhā) for battle, then tomorrow, dear one, you may fight Arjuna in combat.
यदि वापि त्वरा तुभ्यं युद्धतृष्णासमावृता ।
निहत्यास्मांस्ततो युद्धमर्जुनेनोपयास्यसि ॥३०॥
30. yadi vāpi tvarā tubhyaṃ yuddhatṛṣṇāsamāvṛtā ,

30. Or if you are indeed filled with an urgent thirst for battle, then only after striking us down will you engage in battle with Arjuna.

सूदिताश्चापि ते युद्धे भक्षिताश्च बुभुक्षितैः ॥३१॥
31. tataste rāvaṇāmātyairamātyāḥ pārthivasya tu ,

31. Then, indeed, the ministers of the king (Arjuna) were slain by Rāvaṇa's ministers in battle, and they were even devoured by those hungry ones (Rāvaṇa's demon ministers).
ततो हलहलाशब्दो नर्मदा तिर आबभौ ।
अर्जुनस्यानुयात्राणां रावणस्य च मन्त्रिणाम् ॥३२॥
32. tato halahalāśabdo narmadā tira ābabhau ,

32. Then, a tumultuous uproar arose on the bank of the Narmada River, [caused by] the followers of Arjuna and the ministers of Rāvaṇa.
इषुभिस्तोमरैः शूलैर्वज्रकल्पैः सकर्षणैः ।
सरावणानर्दयन्तः समन्तात् समभिद्रुताः ॥३३॥
33. iṣubhistomaraiḥ śūlairvajrakalpaiḥ sakarṣaṇaiḥ ,
sarāvaṇānardayantaḥ samantāt samabhidrutāḥ.

33. With arrows, javelins, and spears, which were like thunderbolts and possessed destructive power, they, attacking from all sides, tormented Rāvaṇa and his men.
हैहयाधिपयोधानां वेग आसीत् सुदारुणः ।
सनक्रमीनमकरसमुद्रस्येव निस्वनः ॥३४॥
34. haihayādhipayodhānāṃ vega āsīt sudāruṇaḥ ,

34. The impetuous force of the Haihaya king's warriors was extremely terrible, like the roar of an ocean filled with alligators, fish, and crocodiles.
रावणस्य तु ते ऽमात्याः प्रहस्तशुकसारणाः ।
कार्तवीर्यबलं क्रुद्धा निर्दहन्त्यग्नितेजसः ॥३५॥
35. rāvaṇasya tu te'mātyāḥ prahastaśukasāraṇāḥ ,
kārtavīryabalaṃ kruddhā nirdahantyagnitejasaḥ.

35. But those enraged ministers of Rāvaṇa - Prahastha, Śuka, and Sāraṇa - who possessed the energy of fire, began to destroy the forces of Kārtavīrya.
अर्जुनाय तु तत् कर्म रावणस्य समन्त्रिणः ।
क्रीडमानाय कथितं पुरुषैर्द्वाररक्षिभिः ॥३६॥
36. arjunāya tu tat karma rāvaṇasya samantriṇaḥ ,
krīḍamānāya kathitaṃ puruṣairdvārarakṣibhiḥ.

36. Now, that event (karma) concerning Rāvaṇa and his ministers was recounted to Arjuna, who was engaged in play, by the doorkeepers.
उक्त्वा न भेतव्यमिति स्त्रीजनं स ततो ऽर्जुनः ।
उत्ततार जलात्तस्माद्गङ्गातोयादिवाञ्जनः ॥३७॥
37. uktvā na bhetavyamiti strījanaṃ sa tato'rjunaḥ ,
uttatāra jalāttasmādgaṅgātoyādivāñjanaḥ.

37. Having told the women, 'You should not fear,' Arjuna then emerged from that water, just as a majestic elephant (añjana) might rise from the waters of the Ganga.
क्रोधदूषितनेत्रस्तु स ततो ऽर्जुन पावकः ।
प्रजज्वाल महाघोरो युगान्त इव पावकः ॥३८॥
38. krodhadūṣitanetrastu sa tato'rjuna pāvakaḥ ,
prajajvāla mahāghoro yugānta iva pāvakaḥ.

38. Then Arjuna, his eyes inflamed with anger, blazed forth, exceedingly dreadful, like the fire of cosmic dissolution at the end of a world-age (yuga).
स तूर्णतरमादाय वरहेमाङ्गदो गदाम् ।
अभिद्रवति रक्षांसि तमांसीव दिवाकरः ॥३९॥
39. sa tūrṇataramādāya varahemāṅgado gadām ,
abhidravati rakṣāṃsi tamāṃsīva divākaraḥ.

39. He, adorned with excellent golden armlets, swiftly took up his mace and rushed towards the Rākṣasas, just as the sun dispels darkness.
बाहुविक्षेपकरणां समुद्यम्य महागदाम् ।
गारुडं वेगमास्थाय आपपातैव सो ऽर्जुनः ॥४०॥
40. bāhuvikṣepakaraṇāṃ samudyamya mahāgadām ,
gāruḍaṃ vegamāsthāya āpapātaiva so'rjunaḥ.

40. Arjuna, having raised his great mace with a powerful swinging motion and having adopted the speed of Garuḍa, indeed rushed forward.
तस्य मर्गं समावृत्य विन्ध्यो ऽर्कस्येव पर्वतः ।
स्थितो विन्ध्य इवाकम्प्यः प्रहस्तो मुसलायुधः ॥४१॥
41. tasya margaṃ samāvṛtya vindhyo'rkasyeva parvataḥ ,
sthito vindhya ivākampyaḥ prahasto musalāyudhaḥ.

41. Prahasta, wielding a mace, stood unshakeable like the Vindhya mountain, obstructing Arjuna's path as a mountain obstructs the sun.
ततो ऽस्य मुसलं घोरं लोहबद्धं मदोद्धतः ।
प्रहस्तः प्रेषयन् क्रुद्धो ररास च यथाम्बुदः ॥४२॥
42. tato'sya musalaṃ ghoraṃ lohabaddhaṃ madoddhataḥ ,
prahastaḥ preṣayan kruddho rarāsa ca yathāmbudaḥ.

42. Then, Prahasta, arrogant and enraged, roared like a thundercloud while hurling his dreadful, iron-bound mace towards him.
तस्याग्रे मुसलस्याग्निरशोकापीडसंनिभः ।
प्रहस्तकरमुक्तस्य बभूव प्रदहन्निव ॥४३॥
43. tasyāgre musalasyāgniraśokāpīḍasaṃnibhaḥ ,
prahastakaramuktasya babhūva pradahanniva.

43. In front of that mace, which had been released from Prahasta's hand, a fire emerged, resembling a garland of aśoka flowers, as if scorching everything.
आधावमानं मुसलं कार्तवीर्यस्तदार्जुनः ।
निपुणं वञ्चयामास सगदो गजविक्रमः ॥४४॥
44. ādhāvamānaṃ musalaṃ kārtavīryastadārjunaḥ ,
nipuṇaṃ vañcayāmāsa sagado gajavikramaḥ.

44. Kartavirya Arjuna, who possessed the prowess of an elephant and carried a mace, skillfully evaded that mace which was rushing towards him.
ततस्तमभिदुद्राव प्रहस्तं हैहयाधिपः ।
भ्रामयाणो गदां गुर्वीं पञ्चबाहुशतोच्छ्रयाम् ॥४५॥
45. tatastamabhidudrāva prahastaṃ haihayādhipaḥ ,
bhrāmayāṇo gadāṃ gurvīṃ pañcabāhuśatocchrayām.

45. Then, the king of the Haihayas rushed towards Prahasta, swinging his heavy mace, which was as tall as five hundred arms.
तेनाहतो ऽतिवेगेन प्रहस्तो गदया तदा ।
निपपात स्थितः शैलो वज्रिवज्रहतो यथा ॥४६॥
46. tenāhato'tivegena prahasto gadayā tadā ,
nipapāta sthitaḥ śailo vajrivajrahato yathā.

46. Then, Prahasta, struck by his (Kartavirya's) mace with tremendous force, fell down just like a standing mountain struck by Indra's thunderbolt.
प्रहस्तं पतितं दृष्ट्वा मारीचशुकसारणाः ।
समहोदरधूम्राक्षा अपसृप्ता रणाजिरात् ॥४७॥
47. prahastaṃ patitaṃ dṛṣṭvā mārīcaśukasāraṇāḥ ,
samahodaradhūmrākṣā apasṛptā raṇājirāt.

47. Seeing Prahasta fallen, Maricha, Shuka, Sarana, accompanied by Mahodara and Dhumraksha, retreated from the battlefield.
अपक्रान्तेष्वमात्येषु प्रहस्ते च निपातिते ।
रावणो ऽभ्यद्रवत्तूर्णमर्जुनं नृपसत्तमम् ॥४८॥
48. apakrānteṣvamātyeṣu prahaste ca nipātite ,
rāvaṇo'bhyadravattūrṇamarjunaṃ nṛpasattamam.

48. When his ministers had fled and Prahasta had been killed, Ravana quickly rushed towards Arjuna, the best of kings.
सहस्रबाहोस्तद् युद्धं विंशद्बाहोश्च दारुणम् ।
नृपराक्षसयोस्तत्र आरब्धं लोमहर्षणम् ॥४९॥
49. sahasrabāhostad yuddhaṃ viṃśadbāhośca dāruṇam ,
nṛparākṣasayostatra ārabdhaṃ lomaharṣaṇam.

49. There, that terrible and hair-raising battle began between the thousand-armed one (Arjuna) and the twenty-armed one (Ravana), that is, between the king and the demon.
सागराविव संक्षुब्धौ चलमूलाविवाचलौ ।
तेजोयुक्ताविवादित्यौ प्रदहन्ताविवानलौ ॥५०॥
50. sāgarāviva saṃkṣubdhau calamūlāvivācalau ,
tejoyuktāvivādityau pradahantāvivānalau.

50. They were like two greatly agitated oceans, like two immovable mountains whose foundations were shaken, like two suns endowed with brilliance, and like two intensely burning fires.
बलोद्धतौ यथा नागौ वाशितार्थे यथा वृषौ ।
मेघाविव विनर्दन्तौ सिंहाविव बलोत्कटौ ॥५१॥
51. baloddhatau yathā nāgau vāśitārthe yathā vṛṣau ,
meghāviva vinardantau siṃhāviva balotkaṭau.

51. They were like two powerful elephants, like two bulls fighting for a female, like two thundering clouds, and like two extremely strong lions.
रुद्रकालाविव क्रुद्धौ तौ तथा राक्षसार्जुनौ ।
परस्परं गदाभ्यां तौ ताडयामासतुर्भृशम् ॥५२॥
52. rudrakālāviva kruddhau tau tathā rākṣasārjunau ,
parasparaṃ gadābhyāṃ tau tāḍayāmāsaturbhṛśam.

52. Enraged like Rudra and Kāla (Death), those two, the rākṣasa and Arjuna, similarly struck each other vehemently with their maces.
वज्रप्रहारानचला यथा घोरान् विषेहिरे ।
गदाप्रहारांस्तद्वत्तौ सहेते नरराक्षसौ ॥५३॥
53. vajraprahārānacalā yathā ghorān viṣehire ,
gadāprahārāṃstadvattau sahete nararākṣasau.

53. Just as mountains endure terrible thunderbolt blows, similarly, those two, the human and the rākṣasa, bore the mace-blows.
यथाशनिरवेभ्यस्तु जायते वै प्रतिश्रुतिः ।
तथा ताभ्यां गदापातैर्दिशः सर्वाः प्रतिश्रुताः ॥५४॥
54. yathāśaniravebhyastu jāyate vai pratiśrutiḥ ,
tathā tābhyāṃ gadāpātairdiśaḥ sarvāḥ pratiśrutāḥ.
54. yathā aśaniravebhyaḥ tu jāyate vai pratiśrutiḥ
tathā tābhyām gadāpātaiḥ diśaḥ sarvāḥ pratiśrutāḥ

54. Just as an echo is indeed produced by thunder-claps, similarly, all directions resonated from the mace-blows of those two (warriors).
अर्जुनस्य गदा सा तु पात्यमानाहितोरसि ।
काञ्चनाभं नभश्चक्रे विद्युत्सौदामनी यथा ॥५५॥
55. arjunasya gadā sā tu pātyamānāhitorasi ,
kāñcanābhaṃ nabhaścakre vidyutsaudāmanī yathā.

kāñcanābham nabhaḥ cakre vidyut saudāmanī yathā

55. But that mace of Arjuna, as it struck the enemy's chest, made the sky appear golden, just like a flash of cloud-born lightning.
तथैव रावणेनापि पात्यमाना मुहुर्मुहुः ।
अर्जुनोरसि निर्भाति गदोल्केव महागिरौ ॥५६॥
56. tathaiva rāvaṇenāpi pātyamānā muhurmuhuḥ ,
arjunorasi nirbhāti gadolkeva mahāgirau.

arjuna urasi nirbhāti gadā ulkā iva mahāgirau

56. Just so, the mace, repeatedly struck by Rāvaṇa, shone on Arjuna's chest like a meteor striking a great mountain.
नार्जुनः खेदमाप्नोति न राक्षसगणेश्वरः ।
सममासीत्तयोर्युद्धं यथा पूर्वं बलीन्द्रयोः ॥५७॥
57. nārjunaḥ khedamāpnoti na rākṣasagaṇeśvaraḥ ,
samamāsīttayoryuddhaṃ yathā pūrvaṃ balīndrayoḥ.
57. na arjunaḥ khedam āpnoti na rākṣasagaṇeśvaraḥ
samam āsīt tayoḥ yuddham yathā pūrvam balīndrayoḥ
57. arjunaḥ na khedam āpnoti,
rākṣasagaṇeśvaraḥ na (khedam āpnoti).

57. Neither Arjuna experienced fatigue, nor did the lord of the demon hordes. Their battle was equal, just as it was previously between Bali and Indra.
शृङ्गैर्महर्षभौ यद्वद्दन्ताग्रैरिव कुञ्जरौ ।
परस्परं विनिघ्नन्तौ नरराक्षससत्तमौ ॥५८॥
58. śṛṅgairmaharṣabhau yadvaddantāgrairiva kuñjarau ,
parasparaṃ vinighnantau nararākṣasasattamau.

58. Just as two great bulls strike each other with their horns, or two elephants with the tips of their tusks, so did the two best among men (Arjuna) and demons (Rāvaṇa) strike each other.
ततो ऽर्जुनेन क्रुद्धेन सर्वप्राणेन सा गदा ।
स्तनयोरन्तरे मुक्ता रावणस्य महाहवे ॥५९॥
59. tato'rjunena kruddhena sarvaprāṇena sā gadā ,
stanayorantare muktā rāvaṇasya mahāhave.

59. Then, that mace, hurled by an enraged Arjuna with all his might, was released between Rāvaṇa's breasts in the great battle.
वरदानकृतत्राणे सा गदा रावणोरसि ।
दुर्बलेव यथा सेना द्विधाभूतापतत् क्षितौ ॥६०॥
60. varadānakṛtatrāṇe sā gadā rāvaṇorasi ,
durbaleva yathā senā dvidhābhūtāpatat kṣitau.

60. That mace, while under the protection granted by a boon, fell upon Rāvaṇa's chest, just as a weak army, splitting in two, collapses to the ground.
स त्वर्जुनप्रमुक्तेन गदापातेन रावणः ।
अपासर्पद्धनुर्मात्रं निषसाद च निष्टनन् ॥६१॥
61. sa tvarjunapramuktena gadāpātena rāvaṇaḥ ,
apāsarpaddhanurmātraṃ niṣasāda ca niṣṭanan.
61. saḥ tu arjunapramuktena gadāpātena rāvaṇaḥ
apāsarpat dhanurmātram niṣasāda ca niṣṭanan

61. But Rāvaṇa, struck by the impact of the mace released by Arjuna, recoiled a bow's length and sank down, groaning.
स विह्वलं तदालक्ष्य दशग्रीवं ततो ऽर्जुनः ।
सहसा प्रतिजग्राह गरुत्मानिव पन्नगम् ॥६२॥
62. sa vihvalaṃ tadālakṣya daśagrīvaṃ tato'rjunaḥ ,
sahasā pratijagrāha garutmāniva pannagam.
62. saḥ vihvalam tat ālakṣya daśagrīvam tataḥ
arjunaḥ sahasā pratijagrāha garutmān iva pannagam
62. tataḥ arjunaḥ saḥ daśagrīvam vihvalam tat ālakṣya sahasā pratijagrāha,

62. Then Arjuna, seeing that ten-necked Rāvaṇa bewildered, quickly seized him, just as Garuḍa seizes a serpent.
स तं बाहुसहस्रेण बलाद्गृह्य दशाननम् ।
बबन्ध बलवान् राजा बलिं नारायणो यथा ॥६३॥
63. sa taṃ bāhusahasreṇa balādgṛhya daśānanam ,
babandha balavān rājā baliṃ nārāyaṇo yathā.
63. saḥ tam bāhusahasreṇa balāt gṛhya daśānanam
babandha balavān rājā balim nārāyaṇaḥ yathā
63. saḥ balavān rājā balāt bāhusahasreṇa tam daśānanam gṛhya babandha,
yathā nārāyaṇaḥ balim
63. That powerful king (Arjuna), having forcibly seized the ten-headed (Rāvaṇa) with his thousand arms, bound him, just as Nārāyaṇa bound Bali.
बध्यमाने दशग्रीवे सिद्धचारणदेवताः ।
साध्वीति वादिनः पुष्पैः किरन्त्यर्जुनमूर्धनि ॥६४॥
64. badhyamāne daśagrīve siddhacāraṇadevatāḥ ,
sādhvīti vādinaḥ puṣpaiḥ kirantyarjunamūrdhani.

iti vādinaḥ puṣpaiḥ kiranti arjunamūrdhani
64. daśagrīve badhyamāne,

64. As the ten-necked Rāvaṇa was being bound, the Siddhas, Caraṇas, and deities, exclaiming "Well done!", scattered flowers upon Arjuna's head.
व्याघ्रो मृगमिवादाय सिंहराडिव दन्तिनम् ।
ररास हैहयो राजा हर्षादम्बुदवन्मुहुः ॥६५॥
65. vyāghro mṛgamivādāya siṃharāḍiva dantinam ,
rarāsa haihayo rājā harṣādambudavanmuhuḥ.
65. vyāghraḥ mṛgam iva ādāya siṃharāṭ iva dantinām
rarāsa haihayaḥ rājā harṣāt ambudavat muhuḥ
65. haihayaḥ rājā vyāghraḥ mṛgam iva,
siṃharāṭ dantinām iva ādāya,
harṣāt ambudavat muhuḥ rarāsa
65. The Haihaya king roared repeatedly with joy, like a cloud, having seized (Rāvaṇa) just as a tiger seizes a deer or a mighty lion seizes an elephant.
प्रहस्तस्तु समाश्वस्तो दृष्ट्वा बद्धं दशाननम् ।
सह तै राकसैः क्रुद्ध अभिदुद्राव पार्थिवम् ॥६६॥
66. prahastastu samāśvasto dṛṣṭvā baddhaṃ daśānanam ,
saha tai rākasaiḥ kruddha abhidudrāva pārthivam.
66. prahastaḥ tu samāśvastaḥ dṛṣṭvā baddham daśānanam
saha taiḥ rākasaiḥ kruddhaḥ abhidudrāva pārthivam
66. tu prahastaḥ daśānanam baddham dṛṣṭvā samāśvastaḥ,
taiḥ rākasaiḥ saha kruddhaḥ pārthivam abhidudrāva
66. But Prahastha, upon seeing the ten-faced Rāvaṇa bound, composed himself, and enraged, he attacked the king along with those Rākṣasas.
नक्तंचराणां वेगस्तु तेषामापततां बभौ ।
उद्धृत आतपापाये समुद्राणामिवाद्भुतः ॥६७॥
67. naktaṃcarāṇāṃ vegastu teṣāmāpatatāṃ babhau ,
uddhṛta ātapāpāye samudrāṇāmivādbhutaḥ.
67. naktaṃcarāṇām vegaḥ tu teṣām āpatatām babhau
uddhṛtaḥ ātapāpāye samudrāṇām iva adbhutaḥ
67. tu teṣām āpatatām naktaṃcarāṇām vegaḥ,

67. And the tremendous rush of those attacking night-wanderers (Rākṣasas) appeared splendid, astonishingly agitated like (the phenomenon) of the oceans at the end of the hot season.
मुञ्च मुञ्चेति भाषन्तस्तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चासकृत् ।
मुसलानि च शूलानि उत्ससर्जुस्तदार्जुने ॥६८॥
68. muñca muñceti bhāṣantastiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cāsakṛt ,
musalāni ca śūlāni utsasarjustadārjune.
68. muñca muñca iti bhāṣantaḥ tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti ca
asakṛt musalāni ca śūlāni utsasarjuḥ tadā arjune
68. bhāṣantaḥ muñca muñca iti ca asakṛt tiṣṭha tiṣṭha
iti tadā musalāni ca śūlāni arjune utsasarjuḥ
68. Saying 'Let go! Let go!' and repeatedly 'Halt! Halt!', they then hurled maces and spears at Arjuna.
अप्राप्तान्येव तान्याशु असंभ्रान्तस्तदार्जुनः ।
आयुधान्यमरारीणां जग्राह रिपुसूदनः ॥६९॥
69. aprāptānyeva tānyāśu asaṃbhrāntastadārjunaḥ ,
āyudhānyamarārīṇāṃ jagrāha ripusūdanaḥ.
69. aprāptāni eva tāni āśu asaṃbhrāntaḥ tadā
arjunaḥ āyudhāni amarārīṇām jagrāha ripusūdanaḥ
69. tadā asaṃbhrāntaḥ ripusūdanaḥ arjunaḥ amarārīṇām
aprāptāni eva tāni āyudhāni āśu jagrāha
69. Unperturbed, Arjuna, the destroyer of enemies, then swiftly seized those very weapons of the enemies of the gods before they could reach him.
ततस्तैरेव रक्षांसि दुर्धरैः प्रवरायुधैः ।
भित्त्वा विद्रावयामास वायुरम्बुधरानिव ॥७०॥
70. tatastaireva rakṣāṃsi durdharaiḥ pravarāyudhaiḥ ,
bhittvā vidrāvayāmāsa vāyurambudharāniva.
70. tataḥ taiḥ eva rakṣāṃsi durdharaiḥ pravarāyudhaiḥ
bhittvā vidrāvayāmāsa vāyuḥ ambudharān iva
70. tataḥ durdharaiḥ pravarāyudhaiḥ taiḥ eva bhittvā
rakṣāṃsi vidrāvayāmāsa vāyuḥ ambudharān iva
70. Then, with those very formidable and excellent weapons, he pierced the rākṣasas and put them to flight, just as the wind scatters rain clouds.
राक्षसांस्त्रासयित्वा तु कार्तवीर्यार्जुनस्तदा ।
रावणं गृह्य नगरं प्रविवेश सुहृद्वृतः ॥७१॥
71. rākṣasāṃstrāsayitvā tu kārtavīryārjunastadā ,
rāvaṇaṃ gṛhya nagaraṃ praviveśa suhṛdvṛtaḥ.
71. rākṣasān trāsayitvā tu kārtavīrya arjunaḥ tadā
rāvaṇam gṛhya nagaram praviveśa suhṛdvṛtaḥ
71. tu kārtavīrya arjunaḥ tadā rākṣasān trāsayitvā
rāvaṇam gṛhya suhṛdvṛtaḥ nagaram praviveśa
71. Having terrified the rākṣasas, Kārtavīrya Arjuna then, after capturing Rāvaṇa, entered the city, accompanied by his friends.
स कीर्यमाणः कुसुमाक्षतोत्करैर्द्विजैः सपौरैः पुरुहूतसंनिभः ।
तदार्जुनः संप्रविवेश तां पुरीं बलिं निगृह्यैव सहस्रलोचनः ॥७२॥
72. sa kīryamāṇaḥ kusumākṣatotkarairdvijaiḥ sapauraiḥ puruhūtasaṃnibhaḥ ,
tadārjunaḥ saṃpraviveśa tāṃ purīṃ baliṃ nigṛhyaiva sahasralocanaḥ.
72. saḥ kīryamāṇaḥ kusumākṣatotkaraiḥ
dvijaiḥ sapauraiḥ puruhūtasaṃnibhaḥ
tad arjunaḥ saṃpraviveśa tām purīm
balim nigṛhya eva sahasralocanaḥ
72. tad saḥ arjunaḥ puruhūtasaṃnibhaḥ dvijaiḥ sapauraiḥ kusumākṣatotkaraiḥ kīryamāṇaḥ,
sahasralocanaḥ balim nigṛhya eva tām purīm saṃpraviveśa.
72. Being showered with heaps of flowers and unbroken rice by the twice-born (dvija) and citizens, that Arjuna, who was like Indra (puruhūta), then entered that city, just as the thousand-eyed one (sahasralocana) had indeed captured Bali.
