एवं ब्रुवत्यां सीतायां संरब्धः परुषाक्षरम् ।
ललाटे भ्रुकुटीं कृत्वा रावणः प्रत्युवाच ह ॥१॥

1. While Sītā was speaking thus, Rāvaṇa, enraged, furrowed his brow and indeed replied with harsh words.
भ्राता वैश्रवणस्याहं सापत्न्यो वरवर्णिनि ।
रावणो नाम भद्रं ते दशग्रीवः प्रतापवान् ॥२॥
2. bhrātā vaiśravaṇasyāhaṃ sāpatnyo varavarṇini ,
rāvaṇo nāma bhadraṃ te daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān.

2. O beautiful lady, I am Rāvaṇa by name, the mighty ten-necked one, the half-brother of Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera). May good fortune be yours.
यस्य देवाः सगन्धर्वाः पिशाचपतगोरगाः ।
विद्रवन्ति भयाद्भीता मृत्योरिव सदा प्रजाः ॥३॥
3. yasya devāḥ sagandharvāḥ piśācapatagoragāḥ ,
vidravanti bhayādbhītā mṛtyoriva sadā prajāḥ.

3. Before whom, even gods, along with Gandharvas, Piśācas, birds, and snakes, flee in fear, just as all beings always recoil from death.
येन वैश्रवणो भ्राता वैमात्रः कारणान्तरे ।
द्वन्द्वमासादितः क्रोधाद् रणे विक्रम्य निर्जितः ॥४॥
4. yena vaiśravaṇo bhrātā vaimātraḥ kāraṇāntare ,
dvandvamāsāditaḥ krodhād raṇe vikramya nirjitaḥ.

4. It is by him that his step-brother Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera), on a certain occasion, engaged in a conflict fueled by anger and was then bravely defeated in battle.
मद्भयार्तः परित्यज्य स्वमधिष्ठानमृद्धिमत् ।
कैलासं पर्वतश्रेष्ठमध्यास्ते नरवाहनः ॥५॥
5. madbhayārtaḥ parityajya svamadhiṣṭhānamṛddhimat ,
kailāsaṃ parvataśreṣṭhamadhyāste naravāhanaḥ.

5. Afflicted by my fear, he, Kubera (naravāhanaḥ), abandoned his own prosperous abode and now resides on Kailāsa, the supreme mountain.
यस्य तत् पुष्पकं नाम विमानं कामगं शुभम् ।
वीर्यादावर्जितं भद्रे येन यामि विहायसं ॥६॥
6. yasya tat puṣpakaṃ nāma vimānaṃ kāmagaṃ śubham ,
vīryādāvarjitaṃ bhadre yena yāmi vihāyasaṃ.

vīryāt āvarjitaṃ bhadre yena yāmi vihāyasam
6. bhadre yasya tat kāmagam śubham puṣpakaṃ nāma

6. O gentle one (bhadre), that auspicious aerial chariot named Pushpaka, which can travel anywhere at will, was acquired through my valor (vīrya). It is by means of this (chariot) that I traverse the sky.
मम संजातरोषस्य मुखं दृष्ट्वैव मैथिलि ।
विद्रवन्ति परित्रस्ताः सुराः शक्रपुरोगमाः ॥७॥
7. mama saṃjātaroṣasya mukhaṃ dṛṣṭvaiva maithili ,
vidravanti paritrastāḥ surāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ.

7. O Maithili, merely upon seeing my face when I am enraged, even the gods, led by Indra, flee in great terror.
यत्र तिष्ठाम्यहं तत्र मारुतो वाति शङ्कितः ।
तीव्रांशुः शिशिरांशुश्च भयात् संपद्यते रविः ॥८॥
8. yatra tiṣṭhāmyahaṃ tatra māruto vāti śaṅkitaḥ ,
tīvrāṃśuḥ śiśirāṃśuśca bhayāt saṃpadyate raviḥ.
8. yatra tiṣṭhāmi aham tatra mārutaḥ vāti śaṅkitaḥ
tīvrāṃśuḥ śiśirāṃśuḥ ca bhayāt sampadyate raviḥ

8. Wherever I stand, the wind blows with apprehension. Both the fiercely radiant (Sun) and the coolly radiant (Moon), overcome by fear, transform into the (fearful) Sun.
निष्कम्पपत्रास्तरवो नद्यश्च स्तिमितोदकाः ।
भवन्ति यत्र यत्राहं तिष्ठामि च चरामि च ॥९॥
9. niṣkampapatrāstaravo nadyaśca stimitodakāḥ ,
bhavanti yatra yatrāhaṃ tiṣṭhāmi ca carāmi ca.
9. niṣkampapatrāḥ taravaḥ nadyaḥ ca stimitodakāḥ
bhavanti yatra yatra aham tiṣṭhāmi ca carāmi ca
9. yatra yatra aham tiṣṭhāmi ca carāmi ca taravaḥ

9. Wherever I stand or wherever I move, the trees have motionless leaves, and the rivers have tranquil waters.
मम पारे समुद्रस्य लङ्का नाम पुरी शुभा ।
संपूर्णा राक्षसैर्घोरैर्यथेन्द्रस्यामरावती ॥१०॥
10. mama pāre samudrasya laṅkā nāma purī śubhā ,
saṃpūrṇā rākṣasairghorairyathendrasyāmarāvatī.

rākṣasaiḥ ghoraiḥ yathā indrasya amarāvatī
10. samudrasya pāre mama śubhā purī laṅkā nāma ghoraiḥ

10. On the other side of the ocean is my beautiful city, named Laṅkā, filled with fierce demons, just like Indra's Amarāvatī.
प्राकारेण परिक्षिप्ता पाण्डुरेण विराजिता ।
हेमकक्ष्या पुरी रम्या वैदूर्यमय तोरणा ॥११॥
11. prākāreṇa parikṣiptā pāṇḍureṇa virājitā ,
hemakakṣyā purī ramyā vaidūryamaya toraṇā.

11. The city is surrounded by a white rampart and adorned. It is beautiful, with golden enclosures and archways made of lapis lazuli.
हस्त्यश्वरथसंभाधा तूर्यनादविनादिता ।
सर्वकामफलैर्वृक्षैः संकुलोद्यानशोभिता ॥१२॥
12. hastyaśvarathasaṃbhādhā tūryanādavināditā ,
sarvakāmaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ saṃkulodyānaśobhitā.

sarvakāmaphalaiḥ vṛkṣaiḥ saṅkulodyānaśobhitā
12. (purī) hastyaśvarathasaṃbādhā tūryanādavināditā
sarvakāmaphalaiḥ vṛkṣaiḥ saṅkulodyānaśobhitā
12. The city is bustling with elephants, horses, and chariots, and resounds with the sounds of musical instruments. It is beautified by dense gardens with trees bearing all desired fruits.
तत्र त्वं वसती सीते राजपुत्रि मया सह ।
न स्रमिष्यसि नारीणां मानुषीणां मनस्विनि ॥१३॥
13. tatra tvaṃ vasatī sīte rājaputri mayā saha ,
na sramiṣyasi nārīṇāṃ mānuṣīṇāṃ manasvini.
13. tatra tvam vasatī sīte rājaputri mayā saha
na sramisyasi nārīṇām mānuṣīṇām manasvini
13. sīte rājaputri manasvini tvam tatra mayā
saha vasatī na mānuṣīṇām nārīṇām sramisyasi
13. O Sītā, O resolute princess, you shall dwell there with me. You will not be weary among human women.
भुञ्जाना मानुषान्भोगान्दिव्यांश्च वरवर्णिनि ।
न स्मरिष्यसि रामस्य मानुषस्य गतायुषः ॥१४॥
14. bhuñjānā mānuṣānbhogāndivyāṃśca varavarṇini ,
na smariṣyasi rāmasya mānuṣasya gatāyuṣaḥ.
14. bhuñjānā mānuṣān bhogān divyān ca varavarṇini
na smariṣyasi rāmasya mānuṣasya gatāyuṣaḥ
14. varavarṇini mānuṣān divyān ca bhogān bhuñjānā
(tvam) mānuṣasya gatāyuṣaḥ rāmasya na smariṣyasi
14. O beautiful woman, once you are enjoying human and divine pleasures, you will not remember Rama, who is merely a mortal whose life has passed.
स्थापयित्वा प्रियं पुत्रं राज्ञा दशरथेन यः ।
मन्दवीर्यः सुतो ज्येष्ठस्ततः प्रस्थापितो वनम् ॥१५॥
15. sthāpayitvā priyaṃ putraṃ rājñā daśarathena yaḥ ,
mandavīryaḥ suto jyeṣṭhastataḥ prasthāpito vanam.
15. sthāpayitvā priyam putram rājñā daśarathena yaḥ
mandavīryaḥ sutaḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ tataḥ prasthāpitaḥ vanam
15. raājñā daśarathena priyam putram sthāpayitvā yaḥ
mandavīryaḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ sutaḥ tataḥ vanam prasthāpitaḥ
15. King Dasharatha, having installed a beloved son (other than Rama), banished to the forest that eldest son (Rama) who was of weak prowess.
तेन किं भ्रष्टराज्येन रामेण गतचेतसा ।
करिष्यसि विशालाक्षि तापसेन तपस्विना ॥१६॥
16. tena kiṃ bhraṣṭarājyena rāmeṇa gatacetasā ,
kariṣyasi viśālākṣi tāpasena tapasvinā.
16. tena kim bhraṣṭarājyena rāmeṇa gatacetasā
kariṣyasi viśālākṣi tāpasena tapasvinā
16. viśālākṣi teṇa bhraṣṭarājyena gatacetasā
tāpasena tapasvinā rāmeṇa kim kariṣyasi
16. O wide-eyed one, what will you do with that Rama, who has lost his kingdom, whose mind is distraught, an ascetic, a mere hermit?
सर्वराक्षसभर्तारं कामात् स्वयमिहागतम् ।
न मन्मथशराविष्टं प्रत्याख्यातुं त्वमर्हसि ॥१७॥
17. sarvarākṣasabhartāraṃ kāmāt svayamihāgatam ,
na manmathaśarāviṣṭaṃ pratyākhyātuṃ tvamarhasi.
17. sarvarākṣasabhartāram kāmāt svayam iha āgatam
na manmathaśarāviṣṭam pratyākhyātum tvam arhasi
17. tvam kāmāt svayam iha āgatam manmathaśarāviṣṭam
sarvarākṣasabhartāram na pratyākhyātum arhasi
17. You ought not to reject me, the lord of all Rākṣasas, who has personally come here out of love (kāma), and is afflicted by the arrows of the god of love.
प्रत्याख्याय हि मां भीरु परितापं गमिष्यसि ।
चरणेनाभिहत्येव पुरूरवसमुर्वशी ॥१८॥
18. pratyākhyāya hi māṃ bhīru paritāpaṃ gamiṣyasi ,
caraṇenābhihatyeva purūravasamurvaśī.
18. pratyākhyāya hi mām bhīru paritāpam gamiṣyasi
caraṇena abhihatya iva purūravasam urvaśī
18. bhīru mām pratyākhyāya hi paritāpam gamiṣyasi,
urvaśī purūravasam caraṇena abhihatya iva.
18. O timid one, if you reject me, you will certainly experience great sorrow, just as Urvaśī caused Purūravas to suffer by striking him with her foot.
एवमुक्ता तु वैदेही क्रुद्धा संरक्तलोचना ।
अब्रवीत् परुषं वाक्यं रहिते राक्षसाधिपम् ॥१९॥
19. evamuktā tu vaidehī kruddhā saṃraktalocanā ,
abravīt paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ rahite rākṣasādhipam.
19. evam uktā tu vaidehī kruddhā saṃrakta-locanā
abravīt paruṣam vākyam rahite rākṣasa-adhipam
19. tu evam uktā kruddhā saṃrakta-locanā vaidehī rahite rākṣasa-adhipam paruṣam vākyam abravīt.
19. But Vaidehī (Sītā), thus addressed, enraged and with reddened eyes, spoke harsh words to the lord of Rākṣasas in a secluded place.
कथं वैश्रवणं देवं सर्वभूतनमस्कृतम् ।
भ्रातरं व्यपदिश्य त्वमशुभं कर्तुमिच्छसि ॥२०॥
20. kathaṃ vaiśravaṇaṃ devaṃ sarvabhūtanamaskṛtam ,
bhrātaraṃ vyapadiśya tvamaśubhaṃ kartumicchasi.
20. katham vaiśravaṇam devam sarva-bhūta-namaskṛtam
bhrātaram vyapadiśya tvam aśubham kartum icchasi
20. tvam sarva-bhūta-namaskṛtam devam vaiśravaṇam
bhrātaram vyapadiśya aśubham kartum katham icchasi?
20. How is it that you, claiming Vaiśravaṇa, the god revered by all beings, as your brother, wish to commit such an evil act?
अवश्यं विनशिष्यन्ति सर्वे रावण राक्षसाः ।
येषां त्वं कर्कशो राजा दुर्बुद्धिरजितेन्द्रियः ॥२१॥
21. avaśyaṃ vinaśiṣyanti sarve rāvaṇa rākṣasāḥ ,
yeṣāṃ tvaṃ karkaśo rājā durbuddhirajitendriyaḥ.
21. avaśyam vinaśiṣyanti sarve rāvaṇa rākṣasāḥ yeṣām
tvam karkaśaḥ rājā durbuddhiḥ ajita-indriyaḥ
21. rāvaṇa yeṣām tvam karkaśaḥ durbuddhiḥ ajita-indriyaḥ rājā,
sarve rākṣasāḥ avaśyam vinaśiṣyanti.
21. O Rāvaṇa, all the Rākṣasas will certainly be destroyed, whose king you are - a cruel, foolish, and uncontrolled individual.
अपहृत्य शचीं भार्यां शक्यमिन्द्रस्य जीवितुम् ।
न तु रामस्य भार्यां मामपनीयास्ति जीवितम् ॥२२॥
22. apahṛtya śacīṃ bhāryāṃ śakyamindrasya jīvitum ,
na tu rāmasya bhāryāṃ māmapanīyāsti jīvitam.
22. apahṛtya śacīm bhāryām śakyam indrasya jīvitum
na tu rāmasya bhāryām mām apanīya asti jīvitam
22. indrasya bhāryām śacīm apahṛtya jīvitum śakyam.
tu rāmasya bhāryām mām apanīya jīvitam na asti.
22. One might be able to live after abducting Shachi, the wife of Indra. But it is not possible to survive after carrying away me, Rama's wife.
जीवेच्चिरं वज्रधरस्य हस्ताच्छचीं प्रधृष्याप्रतिरूपरूपाम् ।
न मादृशीं राक्षसधर्षयित्वा पीतामृतस्यापि तवास्ति मोक्षः ॥२३॥
23. jīvecciraṃ vajradharasya hastācchacīṃ pradhṛṣyāpratirūparūpām ,
na mādṛśīṃ rākṣasadharṣayitvā pītāmṛtasyāpi tavāsti mokṣaḥ.
23. jīvet ciram vajradharasya hastāt
śacīm pradhṛṣya apratirūparūpām
na mādṛśīm rākṣasa dharṣayitvā
pītāmṛtasya api tava asti mokṣaḥ
23. apratirūparūpām śacīm vajradharasya hastāt pradhṛṣya ciram jīvet.
rākṣasa,
mādṛśīm dharṣayitvā pītāmṛtasya api tava mokṣaḥ na asti.
23. One might live long even after violating Shachi, the incomparably beautiful wife of Indra, the thunderbolt-wielder, and escaping from his hands. But O demon, even if you have drunk the nectar of immortality, there will be no escape (mokṣa) for you after violating a woman like me.
