स तु दत्त्वा दशग्रीवो वनं घोरं खरस्य तत् ।
भगिनीं च समाश्वास्य हृष्टः स्वस्थतरो ऽभवत् ॥१॥
1. sa tu dattvā daśagrīvo vanaṃ ghoraṃ kharasya tat ,

1. Having given that dreadful forest to Khara and having consoled his sister, the ten-necked (Daśagrīva) demon became delighted and more at ease.
ततो निकुम्भिला नाम लङ्कायाः काननं महत् ।
महात्मा राक्षसेन्द्रस्तत् प्रविवेश सहानुगः ॥२॥
2. tato nikumbhilā nāma laṅkāyāḥ kānanaṃ mahat ,
mahātmā rākṣasendrastat praviveśa sahānugaḥ.
2. tataḥ nikumbhilā nāma laṅkāyāḥ kānanam mahat
mahātmā rākṣasendraḥ tat praviveśa sahānugaḥ

2. Then, there was a great forest of Lanka named Nikumbhilā. The great-souled (mahātmā) lord of demons entered that [forest] with his followers.
तत्र यूपशताकीर्णं सौम्यचैत्योपशोभितम् ।
ददर्श विष्ठितं यज्ञं संप्रदीप्तमिव श्रिया ॥३॥
3. tatra yūpaśatākīrṇaṃ saumyacaityopaśobhitam ,
dadarśa viṣṭhitaṃ yajñaṃ saṃpradīptamiva śriyā.

3. There he saw the performed Vedic ritual (yajña), teeming with hundreds of sacrificial posts and adorned with serene altars, shining brightly as if with splendor.
ततः कृष्णाजिनधरं कमण्डलुशिखाध्वजम् ।
ददर्श स्वसुतं तत्र मेघनादमरिंदमम् ॥४॥
4. tataḥ kṛṣṇājinadharaṃ kamaṇḍaluśikhādhvajam ,
dadarśa svasutaṃ tatra meghanādamariṃdamam.

4. Then, there he saw his own son, Meghānāda, the vanquisher of foes, clad in a black antelope skin and characterized by a water-pot and topknot as his distinguishing emblem.
रक्षःपतिः समासाद्य समाश्लिष्य च बाहुभिः ।
अब्रवीत् किमिदं वत्स वर्तते तद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥५॥
5. rakṣaḥpatiḥ samāsādya samāśliṣya ca bāhubhiḥ ,
abravīt kimidaṃ vatsa vartate tadbravīhi me.

abravīt kim idam vatsa vartate tat bravīhi me

5. Having approached and embraced him with his arms, the lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) said, 'My dear son, what is this that is happening? Tell that to me.'
उशना त्वब्रवीत्तत्र गुरुर्यज्ञसमृद्धये ।
रावणं राक्षसश्रेष्ठं द्विजश्रेष्ठो महातपाः ॥६॥
6. uśanā tvabravīttatra gururyajñasamṛddhaye ,
rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasaśreṣṭhaṃ dvijaśreṣṭho mahātapāḥ.
6. uśanā tu abravīt tatra guruḥ yajñasamṛddhaye
rāvaṇam rākṣasaśreṣṭham dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ mahātapāḥ
6. tu tatra mahātapāḥ dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ guruḥ uśanā
rākṣasaśreṣṭham rāvaṇam yajñasamṛddhaye abravīt
6. But there, Uśanas, the preceptor of great asceticism (tapas) and the foremost among the twice-born (dvija), spoke to Rāvaṇa, the chief of rākṣasas, for the prosperity of the Vedic ritual (yajña).
अहमाख्यामि ते राजञ् श्रूयतां सर्वमेव च ।
यज्ञास्ते सप्त पुत्रेण प्राप्ताः सुबहुविस्तराः ॥७॥
7. ahamākhyāmi te rājañ śrūyatāṃ sarvameva ca ,
yajñāste sapta putreṇa prāptāḥ subahuvistarāḥ.
7. aham ākhyāmi te rājan śrūyatām sarvam eva ca
yajñāḥ te sapta putreṇa prāptāḥ subahuvistarāḥ
7. rājan aham te sarvam ca eva ākhyāmi śrūyatām

7. O King, I will tell you; listen to all of it. Your son performed those seven very elaborate Vedic rituals (yajña).
अग्निष्टोमो ऽश्वमेधश्च यज्ञो बहुसुवर्णकः ।
राजसूयस्तथा यज्ञो गोमेधो वैष्णवस्तथा ॥८॥
8. agniṣṭomo'śvamedhaśca yajño bahusuvarṇakaḥ ,
rājasūyastathā yajño gomedho vaiṣṇavastathā.
8. agniṣṭomaḥ aśvamedhaḥ ca yajñaḥ bahusuvarṇakaḥ
rājasūyaḥ tathā yajñaḥ gomedhaḥ vaiṣṇavaḥ tathā
8. agniṣṭomaḥ ca aśvamedhaḥ bahusuvarṇakaḥ yajñaḥ
tathā rājasūyaḥ yajñaḥ gomedhaḥ tathā vaiṣṇavaḥ
8. These include the Agniṣṭoma and Aśvamedha (Vedic rituals), the Bahusuvarṇaka (Vedic ritual) which involves much gold, and likewise the Rājasūya (Vedic ritual), the Gomedha, and the Vaiṣṇava (Vedic ritual).
माहेश्वरे प्रवृत्ते तु यज्ञे पुम्भिः सुदुर्लभे ।
वरांस्ते लब्धवान्पुत्रः साक्षात् पशुपतेरिह ॥९॥
9. māheśvare pravṛtte tu yajñe pumbhiḥ sudurlabhe ,
varāṃste labdhavānputraḥ sākṣāt paśupateriha.

varān te labdhavān putraḥ sākṣāt paśupateḥ iha
9. tu iha māheśvare yajñe pravṛtte pumbhiḥ sudurlabhe

9. Indeed, when the Māheśvara (Vedic ritual), which is very difficult for men to perform, was being conducted, your son directly obtained boons from Paśupati (Shiva) here.
कामगं स्यन्दनं दिव्यमन्तरिक्षचरं ध्रुवम् ।
मायां च तामसीं नाम यया संपद्यते तमः ॥१०॥
10. kāmagaṃ syandanaṃ divyamantarikṣacaraṃ dhruvam ,
māyāṃ ca tāmasīṃ nāma yayā saṃpadyate tamaḥ.
10. kāmagam syandanam divyam antarikṣacaram dhruvam
māyām ca tāmasīm nāma yayā sampadyate tamaḥ
10. kāmagaṃ divyam antarikṣacaram dhruvam syandanam
ca tāmasīm nāma māyām yayā tamaḥ sampadyate
10. He obtained a divine chariot that moves at will, travels through the sky, and is enduring; and the illusion (māyā) named Tāmasī, by which darkness is produced.
एतया किल संग्रामे मायया राक्षसेश्वर ।
प्रयुद्धस्य गतिः शक्या न हि ज्ञातुं सुरासुरैः ॥११॥
11. etayā kila saṃgrāme māyayā rākṣaseśvara ,
prayuddhasya gatiḥ śakyā na hi jñātuṃ surāsuraiḥ.
11. etayā kila saṃgrāme māyayā rākṣaseśvara
prayuddhasya gatiḥ śakyā na hi jñātuṃ surāsuraiḥ
11. rākṣaseśvara kila etayā māyayā saṃgrāme
prayuddhasya gatiḥ surāsuraiḥ jñātuṃ na hi śakyā
11. O lord of rākṣasas, indeed, through this power of illusion (māyā) in battle, the movements of one fighting fiercely cannot be known even by gods and asuras.
अक्षयाविषुधी बाणैश्चापं चापि सुदुर्जयम् ।
अस्त्रं च बलवत् सौम्य शत्रुविध्वंसनं रणे ॥१२॥
12. akṣayāviṣudhī bāṇaiścāpaṃ cāpi sudurjayam ,
astraṃ ca balavat saumya śatruvidhvaṃsanaṃ raṇe.
12. akṣayāviṣudhī bāṇaiḥ cāpam ca api sudurjayam
astram ca balavat saumya śatruvidhvaṃsanam raṇe
12. ca api akṣayāviṣudhī bāṇaiḥ ca sudurjayam cāpam
ca balavat śatruvidhvaṃsanam astram saumya raṇe
12. And (there are) two inexhaustible quivers (filled) with arrows, and also a bow that is very difficult to conquer, and, O gentle one, a powerful weapon that annihilates enemies in battle.
एतान् सर्वान् वरांल् लब्ध्वा पुत्रस्ते ऽयं दशानन ।
अद्य यज्ञसमाप्तौ च त्वत्प्रतीक्षः स्थितो अहम् ॥१३॥
13. etān sarvān varāṃl labdhvā putraste'yaṃ daśānana ,
adya yajñasamāptau ca tvatpratīkṣaḥ sthito aham.
13. etān sarvān varān labdhvā putraḥ te ayam daśānana
adya yajñasamāptau ca tvatpratīkṣaḥ sthitaḥ aham
13. daśānana te ayam putraḥ etān sarvān varān labdhvā,
adya ca yajñasamāptau aham tvatpratīkṣaḥ sthitaḥ
13. O Daśānana, your son has obtained all these boons, and I am waiting for you here today at the completion of the Vedic ritual (yajña).
ततो ऽब्रवीद्दशग्रीवो न शोभनमिदं कृतम् ।
पूजिताः शत्रवो यस्माद्द्रव्यैरिन्द्रपुरोगमाः ॥१४॥
14. tato'bravīddaśagrīvo na śobhanamidaṃ kṛtam ,
pūjitāḥ śatravo yasmāddravyairindrapurogamāḥ.
14. tataḥ abravīt daśagrīvaḥ na śobhanam idam kṛtam
pūjitāḥ śatravaḥ yasmāt dravyaiḥ indrapurogamāḥ
14. tataḥ daśagrīvaḥ abravīt: "idam na śobhanam kṛtam; yasmāt indrapurogamāḥ śatravaḥ dravyaiḥ pūjitāḥ.
"
14. Then Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) said, "This has not been done well, because the enemies, headed by Indra, have been honored with wealth."
एहीदानीं कृतं यद्धि तदकर्तुं न शक्यते ।
आगच्छ सौम्य गच्छामः स्वमेव भवनं प्रति ॥१५॥
15. ehīdānīṃ kṛtaṃ yaddhi tadakartuṃ na śakyate ,
āgaccha saumya gacchāmaḥ svameva bhavanaṃ prati.
15. ehi idānīm kṛtam yat hi tat akartum na śakyate
āgaccha saumya gacchāmaḥ svam eva bhavanam prati
15. ehi idānīm yat kṛtam hi tat akartum na śakyate
saumya āgaccha svam eva bhavanam prati gacchāmaḥ
15. Come now, for what has already been done cannot be undone. Come, gentle one, let us go back to our own home.
ततो गत्वा दशग्रीवः सपुत्रः सविभीषणः ।
स्त्रियो ऽवतारयामास सर्वास्ता बाष्पविक्लवाः ॥१६॥
16. tato gatvā daśagrīvaḥ saputraḥ savibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
striyo'vatārayāmāsa sarvāstā bāṣpaviklavāḥ.
16. tataḥ gatvā daśagrīvaḥ saputraḥ savibhīṣaṇaḥ
striyaḥ avatārayāmāsa sarvāḥ tāḥ bāṣpaviklavaḥ
16. tataḥ daśagrīvaḥ saputraḥ savibhīṣaṇaḥ gatvā
sarvāḥ tāḥ bāṣpaviklavaḥ striyaḥ avatārayāmāsa
16. Then, having arrived there, Daśagrīva, accompanied by his sons and Vibhīṣaṇa, brought down all those women who were overcome with tears.
लक्षिण्यो रत्नबूताश्च देवदानवरक्षसाम् ।
नानाभूषणसंपन्ना ज्वलन्त्यः स्वेन तेजसा ॥१७॥
17. lakṣiṇyo ratnabūtāśca devadānavarakṣasām ,
nānābhūṣaṇasaṃpannā jvalantyaḥ svena tejasā.
17. lakṣiṇyaḥ ratnabhūtāḥ ca devadānavarakṣasām
nānābhūṣaṇasaṃpannāḥ jvalantyaḥ svena tejasā
17. lakṣiṇyaḥ ca ratnabhūtāḥ devadānavarakṣasām
nānābhūṣaṇasaṃpannāḥ svena tejasā jvalantyaḥ
17. They were women with auspicious marks, who were veritable jewels among the gods, dānavas, and rākṣasas, adorned with various ornaments, and shining with their own splendor.
विभीषणस्तु ता नारीर्दृष्ट्वा शोकसमाकुलाः ।
तस्य तां च मतिं ज्ञात्वा धर्मात्मा वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. vibhīṣaṇastu tā nārīrdṛṣṭvā śokasamākulāḥ ,
tasya tāṃ ca matiṃ jñātvā dharmātmā vākyamabravīt.
18. vibhīṣaṇaḥ tu tāḥ nārīḥ dṛṣṭvā śokasamākulāḥ
tasya tām ca matim jñātvā dharmātmā vākyam abravīt
18. tu vibhīṣaṇaḥ dharmātmā tāḥ nārīḥ śokasamākulāḥ
dṛṣṭvā ca tasya tām matim jñātvā vākyam abravīt
18. But Vibhīṣaṇa, the righteous one (dharmātmā), having seen those women overcome with sorrow and having understood Daśagrīva's intention, spoke these words.
ईदृशैस्तैः समाचारैर्यशोऽर्थकुलनाशनैः ।
धर्षणं प्राणिनां दत्त्वा स्वमतेन विचेष्टसे ॥१९॥
19. īdṛśaistaiḥ samācārairyaśo'rthakulanāśanaiḥ ,
dharṣaṇaṃ prāṇināṃ dattvā svamatena viceṣṭase.
19. īdṛśaiḥ taiḥ samācāraiḥ yaśaḥ-artha-kula-nāśanaiḥ
dharṣaṇaṃ prāṇināṃ dattvā svamatena viceṣṭase
19. svamatena īdṛśaiḥ taiḥ yaśaḥ-artha-kula-nāśanaiḥ
samācāraiḥ prāṇināṃ dharṣaṇaṃ dattvā viceṣṭase
19. You act according to your own arbitrary will, inflicting oppression upon living beings through such conduct that destroys fame, prosperity, and lineage.
ज्ञातीन् वै धर्षयित्वेमास्त्वयानीता वराङ्गनाः ।
त्वामतिक्रम्य मधुना राजन् कुम्भीनसी हृता ॥२०॥
20. jñātīn vai dharṣayitvemāstvayānītā varāṅganāḥ ,
tvāmatikramya madhunā rājan kumbhīnasī hṛtā.
20. jñātīn vai dharṣayitvā imāḥ tvayā ānītāḥ varāṅganāḥ
tvām atikramya madhunā rājan kumbhīnasī hṛtā
20. rājan vai tvayā jñātīn dharṣayitvā imāḥ varāṅganāḥ ānītāḥ [santi],
madhunā tvām atikramya kumbhīnasī hṛtā
20. O King, indeed, after you had violated kinsmen and brought these beautiful women, Madhu abducted Kumbhīnasī, disregarding you.
रावणस्त्वब्रवीद्वाक्यं नावगच्छामि किं त्विदम् ।
को वायं यस्त्वयाख्यातो मधुरित्येव नामतः ॥२१॥
21. rāvaṇastvabravīdvākyaṃ nāvagacchāmi kiṃ tvidam ,
ko vāyaṃ yastvayākhyāto madhurityeva nāmataḥ.
21. rāvaṇaḥ tu abravīt vākyaṃ na avagacchāmi kiṃ tu idam
kaḥ vā ayaṃ yaḥ tvayā ākhyātaḥ madhuḥ iti eva nāmataḥ
21. tu rāvaṇaḥ vākyaṃ abravīt: "na kiṃ tu idam avagacchāmi?
vā kaḥ ayaṃ yaḥ tvayā madhuḥ iti eva nāmataḥ ākhyātaḥ?"
21. But Ravana then said, "What is this that I do not understand? Or who is this person named Madhu whom you just mentioned?"
विभीषणस्तु संक्रुद्धो भ्रातरं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
श्रूयतामस्य पापस्य कर्मणः फलमागतम् ॥२२॥
22. vibhīṣaṇastu saṃkruddho bhrātaraṃ vākyamabravīt ,
śrūyatāmasya pāpasya karmaṇaḥ phalamāgatam.
22. vibhīṣaṇaḥ tu saṃkruddhaḥ bhrātaraṃ vākyaṃ abravīt
śrūyatām asya pāpasya karmaṇaḥ phalam āgatam
22. tu saṃkruddhaḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ bhrātaraṃ vākyaṃ abravīt: "asya pāpasya karmaṇaḥ phalam āgatam,
śrūyatām.
"
22. But Vibhīṣaṇa, greatly enraged, spoke these words to his brother: "Listen! The consequence (phala) of this evil action (karma) has arrived!"
मातामहस्य यो ऽस्माकं ज्येष्ठो भ्राता सुमालिनः ।
माल्यवानिति विख्यातो वृद्धप्राज्ञो निशाचरः ॥२३॥
23. mātāmahasya yo'smākaṃ jyeṣṭho bhrātā sumālinaḥ ,
mālyavāniti vikhyāto vṛddhaprājño niśācaraḥ.
23. mātāmahasya yaḥ asmākam jyeṣṭhaḥ bhrātā sumālinaḥ
mālyavān iti vikhyātaḥ vṛddhaprājñaḥ niśācaraḥ
23. asmākam mātāmahasya sumālinaḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ bhrātā yaḥ
mālyavān iti vikhyātaḥ vṛddhaprājñaḥ niśācaraḥ
23. The elder brother of our maternal grandfather, Sumālin, was renowned as Mālyavān, a venerable and wise night-dweller (niśācara).
पितुर्ज्येष्ठो जनन्याश्च अस्माकं त्वार्यको ऽभवत् ।
तस्य कुम्भीनसी नाम दुहितुर्दुहिताभवत् ॥२४॥
24. piturjyeṣṭho jananyāśca asmākaṃ tvāryako'bhavat ,
tasya kumbhīnasī nāma duhiturduhitābhavat.
24. pituḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ jananyāḥ ca asmākam tu āryakaḥ
abhavat tasya kumbhīnasī nāma duhituḥ duhitā abhavat
24. asmākam pituḥ jananyāḥ ca jyeṣṭhaḥ tu āryakaḥ
abhavat tasya duhituḥ duhitā kumbhīnasī nāma abhavat
24. Indeed, he became our venerable elder (āryaka), senior to both our father and mother. His daughter's daughter was named Kumbhīnasī.
मातृष्वसुरथास्माकं सा कन्या चानलोद्भवा ।
भवत्यस्माकमेषा वै भ्रातॄणां धर्मतः स्वसा ॥२५॥
25. mātṛṣvasurathāsmākaṃ sā kanyā cānalodbhavā ,
bhavatyasmākameṣā vai bhrātṝṇāṃ dharmataḥ svasā.
25. mātṛṣvasuḥ atha asmākam sā kanyā ca analodbhavā
bhavati asmākam eṣā vai bhrātṝṇām dharmataḥ svasā
25. atha asmākam mātṛṣvasuḥ sā analodbhavā kanyā ca
eṣā vai asmākam bhrātṝṇām dharmataḥ svasā bhavati
25. And that girl, born from Anala, is also the daughter of our maternal aunt. Indeed, she is considered a sister to us brothers by familial custom (dharma).
सा हृता मधुना राजन् राक्षसेन बलीयसा ।
यज्ञप्रवृत्ते पुत्रे ते मयि चान्तर्जलोषिते ॥२६॥
26. sā hṛtā madhunā rājan rākṣasena balīyasā ,
yajñapravṛtte putre te mayi cāntarjaloṣite.
26. sā hṛtā madhunā rājan rākṣasena balīyasā
yajñapravṛtte putre te mayi ca antarjala uṣite
26. rājan sā madhunā balīyasā rākṣasena hṛtā te
putre yajñapravṛtte ca mayi antarjala uṣite
26. O King, she was abducted by the mighty demon (rākṣasa) Madhu, while your son was engaged in a Vedic ritual (yajña) and I was dwelling submerged in water.
निहत्य राक्षसश्रेष्ठानमात्यांस्तव संमतान् ।
धर्षयित्वा हृता राजन् गुप्ता ह्यन्तःपुरे तव ॥२७॥
27. nihatya rākṣasaśreṣṭhānamātyāṃstava saṃmatān ,
dharṣayitvā hṛtā rājan guptā hyantaḥpure tava.
27. nihatya rākṣasaśreṣṭhān amātyān tava saṃmatān
dharṣayitvā hṛtā rājan guptā hi antaḥpure tava
27. rājan tava rākṣasaśreṣṭhān saṃmatān amātyān
nihatya dharṣayitvā tava antaḥpure guptā hi hṛtā
27. O King, having killed your foremost rākṣasas and your esteemed ministers, and having violated (it), she who was protected in your inner palace was indeed abducted.
श्रुत्वा त्वेतन्महाराज क्षान्तमेव हतो न सः ।
यस्मादवश्यं दातव्या कन्या भर्त्रे हि दातृभिः ।
अस्मिन्नेवाभिसंप्राप्तं लोके विदितमस्तु ते ॥२८॥
28. śrutvā tvetanmahārāja kṣāntameva hato na saḥ ,
yasmādavaśyaṃ dātavyā kanyā bhartre hi dātṛbhiḥ ,
asminnevābhisaṃprāptaṃ loke viditamastu te.
28. śrutvā tu etat mahārāja kṣāntam eva
hataḥ na saḥ yasmāt avaśyam dātavyā
kanyā bhartre hi dātṛbhiḥ asmin
eva abhisaṃprāptam loke viditam astu te
28. mahārāja tu etat śrutvā saḥ na hataḥ
eva kṣāntam yasmāt hi dātṛbhiḥ
kanyā bhartre avaśyam dātavyā asmin
eva loke abhisaṃprāptam te viditam astu
28. O great king, though this was heard, he was not killed; rather, it was simply tolerated. For indeed, givers must necessarily give a daughter to her husband. Let this be known to you as an established fact in this world.
ततो ऽब्रवीद्दशग्रीवः क्रुद्धः संरक्तलोचनः ।
कल्प्यतां मे रथः शीघ्रं शूराः सज्जीभवन्तु च ॥२९॥
29. tato'bravīddaśagrīvaḥ kruddhaḥ saṃraktalocanaḥ ,
kalpyatāṃ me rathaḥ śīghraṃ śūrāḥ sajjībhavantu ca.

29. Then Daśagrīva, enraged and with bloodshot eyes, spoke: 'Let my chariot be prepared quickly, and let the warriors make ready!'
भ्राता मे कुम्भकर्णश्च ये च मुख्या निशाचराः ।
वाहनान्यधिरोहन्तु नानाप्रहरणायुधाः ॥३०॥
30. bhrātā me kumbhakarṇaśca ye ca mukhyā niśācarāḥ ,
vāhanānyadhirohantu nānāpraharaṇāyudhāḥ.

30. And my brother Kumbhakarṇa, and the other chief night-wanderers (rākṣasas) who are armed with various weapons, let them mount their conveyances!
अद्य तं समरे हत्वा मधुं रावणनिर्भयम् ।
इन्द्रलोकं गमिष्यामि युद्धकाङ्क्षी सुहृद्वृतः ॥३१॥
31. adya taṃ samare hatvā madhuṃ rāvaṇanirbhayam ,
indralokaṃ gamiṣyāmi yuddhakāṅkṣī suhṛdvṛtaḥ.
31. adya tam samare hatvā madhum rāvaṇanirbhayam
indralokam gamiṣyāmi yuddhakāṅkṣī suhṛdvṛtaḥ
31. Today, having slain that Madhu in battle - who is fearless even of Rāvaṇa - I shall proceed to Indra's realm, eager for combat and surrounded by my companions.
ततो विजित्य त्रिदिवं वशे स्थाप्य पुरंदरम् ।
निर्वृतो विहरिष्यामि त्रैलोक्यैश्वर्यशोभितः ॥३२॥
32. tato vijitya tridivaṃ vaśe sthāpya puraṃdaram ,
nirvṛto vihariṣyāmi trailokyaiśvaryaśobhitaḥ.
32. tataḥ vijitya tridivam vaśe sthāpya purandaram
nirvṛtaḥ vihariṣyāmi trailokyāiśvaryaśobhitaḥ
32. Then, having conquered heaven and placed Indra under my command, I shall roam contentedly, adorned with the glory of sovereignty over the three worlds.
अक्षौहिणीसहस्राणि चत्वार्युग्राणि रक्षसाम् ।
नानाप्रहरणान्याशु निर्ययुर्युद्धकाङ्क्षिणाम् ॥३३॥
33. akṣauhiṇīsahasrāṇi catvāryugrāṇi rakṣasām ,
nānāpraharaṇānyāśu niryayuryuddhakāṅkṣiṇām.

nānāpraharaṇāni āśu niryayuḥ yuddhakāṅkṣiṇām
33. Four thousand fierce akṣauhiṇī divisions of rākṣasas, armed with various weapons and eager for battle, quickly marched out.
इन्द्रजित्त्वग्रतः सैन्यं सैनिकान्परिगृह्य च ।
रावणो मध्यतः शूरः कुम्भकर्णश्च पृष्ठतः ॥३४॥
34. indrajittvagrataḥ sainyaṃ sainikānparigṛhya ca ,
rāvaṇo madhyataḥ śūraḥ kumbhakarṇaśca pṛṣṭhataḥ.
34. indrajit tu agrataḥ sainyam sainikān parigṛhya ca
rāvaṇaḥ madhyataḥ śūraḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ ca pṛṣṭhataḥ
34. Indeed, Indrajit was at the forefront, having marshaled the army and the soldiers. The valiant Rāvaṇa stood in the middle, and Kumbhakarṇa at the rear.
विभीषणस्तु धर्मात्मा लङ्कायां धर्ममाचरत् ।
ते तु सर्वे महाभागा ययुर्मधुपुरं प्रति ॥३५॥
35. vibhīṣaṇastu dharmātmā laṅkāyāṃ dharmamācarat ,
te tu sarve mahābhāgā yayurmadhupuraṃ prati.
35. vibhīṣaṇaḥ tu dharmātmā laṅkāyām dharmam ācarat
te tu sarve mahābhāgāḥ yayuḥ madhupuram prati

35. Vibhishana, the righteous soul (dharmātmā), however, practiced his intrinsic nature (dharma) in Laṅkā. Meanwhile, all those illustrious ones went towards Madhupura.
रथैर्नागैः खरैरुष्ट्रैर्हयैर्दीप्तैर्महोरगैः ।
राक्षसाः प्रययुः सर्वे कृत्वाकाशं निरन्तरम् ॥३६॥
36. rathairnāgaiḥ kharairuṣṭrairhayairdīptairmahoragaiḥ ,
rākṣasāḥ prayayuḥ sarve kṛtvākāśaṃ nirantaram.

36. All the Rākṣasas set forth, mounted on brilliant chariots, elephants, donkeys, camels, horses, and great serpents, filling the sky completely.
दैत्याश्च शतशस्तत्र कृतवैराः सुरैः सह ।
रावणं प्रेक्ष्य गच्छन्तमन्वगच्छन्त पृष्ठतः ॥३७॥
37. daityāśca śataśastatra kṛtavairāḥ suraiḥ saha ,
rāvaṇaṃ prekṣya gacchantamanvagacchanta pṛṣṭhataḥ.
37. daityāḥ ca śataśaḥ tatra kṛtavairāḥ suraiḥ saha
rāvaṇam prekṣya gacchantam anvagacchant pṛṣṭhataḥ

37. And hundreds of Daityas, who had already established enmity with the gods, seeing Rāvaṇa departing, followed him from behind.
स तु गत्वा मधुपुरं प्रविश्य च दशाननः ।
न ददर्श मधुं तत्र भगिनीं तत्र दृष्टवान् ॥३८॥
38. sa tu gatvā madhupuraṃ praviśya ca daśānanaḥ ,
na dadarśa madhuṃ tatra bhaginīṃ tatra dṛṣṭavān.
38. saḥ tu gatvā madhupuram praviśya ca daśānanaḥ
na dadarśa madhum tatra bhaginīm tatra dṛṣṭavān

38. Having gone and entered Madhupura, Daśānana (Rāvaṇa) did not find Madhu there. Instead, he saw his sister there.
सा प्रह्वा प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा शिरसा पादयोर्गता ।
तस्य राक्षसराजस्य त्रस्ता कुम्भीनसी स्वसा ॥३९॥
39. sā prahvā prāñjalirbhūtvā śirasā pādayorgatā ,
tasya rākṣasarājasya trastā kumbhīnasī svasā.
39. sā prahrā prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā śirasā pādayoḥ gatā
tasya rākṣasarājasya trastā kumbhīnasī svasā

39. That frightened sister, Kumbhīnasi, becoming humble and with folded hands, fell with her head at the feet of that king of rākṣasas.
तां समुत्थापयामास न भेतव्यमिति ब्रुवन् ।
रावणो राक्षसश्रेष्ठः किं चापि करवाणि ते ॥४०॥
40. tāṃ samutthāpayāmāsa na bhetavyamiti bruvan ,
rāvaṇo rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ kiṃ cāpi karavāṇi te.
40. tām samutthāpayāmāsa na bhetavyam iti bruvan
rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ kim ca api karavāṇi te
40. rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ tām samutthāpayāmāsa na

40. Rāvaṇa, the foremost among the rākṣasas, raised her up, saying, 'You have nothing to fear. What else can I do for you?'
साब्रवीद् यदि मे राजन्प्रसन्नस्त्वं महाबल ।
भर्तारं न ममेहाद्य हन्तुमर्हसि मानद ॥४१॥
41. sābravīd yadi me rājanprasannastvaṃ mahābala ,
bhartāraṃ na mamehādya hantumarhasi mānada.
41. sā abravīt yadi me rājan prasannaḥ tvam mahābala
bhartāram na mama iha adya hantum arhasi mānada
41. sā abravīt – rājan mahābala mānada,
yadi tvam me prasannaḥ,
mama bhartāram iha adya hantum na arhasi
41. She said, 'O King, O mighty one, O giver of honor, if you are pleased with me, then you should not kill my husband here today.'
सत्यवाग्भव राजेन्द्र मामवेक्षस्व याचतीम् ।
त्वया ह्युक्तं महाबाहो न भेतव्यमिति स्वयम् ॥४२॥
42. satyavāgbhava rājendra māmavekṣasva yācatīm ,
tvayā hyuktaṃ mahābāho na bhetavyamiti svayam.
42. satyavāk bhava rājendra mām avekṣasva yācatīm
tvayā hi uktam mahābāho na bhetavyam iti svayam
42. rājendra satyavāk bhava yācatīm mām avekṣasva hi,
mahābāho,
tvayā svayam na bhetavyam iti uktam
42. O king of kings, be true to your word! Look upon me, who is imploring you. For you yourself, O mighty-armed one, declared, 'You have nothing to fear.'
रावणस्त्वब्रवीद्धृष्टः स्वसारं तत्र संस्थिताम् ।
क्व चासौ तव भर्ता वै मम शीघ्रं निवेद्यताम् ॥४३॥
43. rāvaṇastvabravīddhṛṣṭaḥ svasāraṃ tatra saṃsthitām ,
kva cāsau tava bhartā vai mama śīghraṃ nivedyatām.
43. Rāvaṇaḥ tu abravīt dhṛṣṭaḥ svasāram tatra saṃsthitām
kva ca asau tava bhartā vai mama śīghram nivedyatām
43. Rāvaṇaḥ dhṛṣṭaḥ tu tatra saṃsthitām svasāram abravīt
ca kva asau tava bhartā vai mama śīghram nivedyatām
43. Then, impudent Rāvaṇa said to his sister who was standing there, 'Where is that husband of yours? Let him be quickly brought to my attention.'
सह तेन गमिष्यामि सुरलोकं जयाय वै ।
तव कारुण्यसौहार्दान्निवृत्तो ऽस्मि मधोर्वधात् ॥४४॥
44. saha tena gamiṣyāmi suralokaṃ jayāya vai ,
tava kāruṇyasauhārdānnivṛtto'smi madhorvadhāt.
44. saha tena gamiṣyāmi suralokam jayāya vai tava
kāruṇyasaumārdāt nivṛttaḥ asmi madhoḥ vadhāt
44. tena saha suralokam jayāya vai gamiṣyāmi tava

44. I will go with him to the world of gods (suraloka) for victory. Because of your compassion and affection, I have refrained from slaying Madhu.
इत्युक्ता सा प्रसुप्तं तं समुत्थाप्य निशाचरम् ।
अब्रवीत् संप्रहृष्टेव राक्षसी सुविपश्चितम् ॥४५॥
45. ityuktā sā prasuptaṃ taṃ samutthāpya niśācaram ,
abravīt saṃprahṛṣṭeva rākṣasī suvipaścitam.
45. iti uktā sā prasuptam tam samutthāpya niśācaram
abravīt samprahṛṣṭā iva rākṣasī suvipaścitam
45. sā rākṣasī iti uktā prasuptam tam niśācaram

45. Thus addressed, she, the demoness, woke up that deeply sleeping night-wanderer (niśācara) and, as if greatly delighted, spoke to the very wise one.
एष प्राप्तो दशग्रीवो मम भ्राता निशाचरः ।
सुरलोकजयाकाङ्क्षी साहाय्ये त्वां वृणोति च ॥४६॥
46. eṣa prāpto daśagrīvo mama bhrātā niśācaraḥ ,
suralokajayākāṅkṣī sāhāyye tvāṃ vṛṇoti ca.
46. eṣaḥ prāptaḥ daśagrīvaḥ mama bhrātā niśācaraḥ
suralokajayākāṅkṣī sāhāyye tvām vṛṇoti ca

46. This Daśagrīva, my brother, the night-wanderer (niśācara), who desires victory over the world of gods (suraloka), has arrived and requests your assistance.
तदस्य त्वं सहायार्थं सबन्धुर्गच्छ राक्षस ।
स्निग्धस्य भजमानस्य युक्तमर्थाय कल्पितुम् ॥४७॥
47. tadasya tvaṃ sahāyārthaṃ sabandhurgaccha rākṣasa ,
snigdhasya bhajamānasya yuktamarthāya kalpitum.
47. tat asya tvam sahāya-artham sa-bandhuḥ gaccha rākṣasa
snigdhasya bhajamānasya yuktam arthāya kalpitum
47. rākṣasa tvam sa-bandhuḥ asya sahāya-artham gaccha
snigdhasya bhajamānasya arthāya kalpitum yuktam
47. Therefore, O Rākṣasa, you should go with your kinsmen to assist him. It is fitting for someone who is affectionate and devoted to be prepared for his objective.
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा तथेत्याह मधुर्वचः ।
ददर्श राक्षसश्रेष्ठं यथान्यायमुपेत्य सः ॥४८॥
48. tasyāstadvacanaṃ śrutvā tathetyāha madhurvacaḥ ,
dadarśa rākṣasaśreṣṭhaṃ yathānyāyamupetya saḥ.
48. tasyāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā tathā iti āha madhuḥ vacaḥ
dadarśa rākṣasa-śreṣṭham yathā-nyāyam upetya saḥ

āha saḥ yathā-nyāyam upetya rākṣasa-śreṣṭham dadarśa
48. Having heard her words, Madhu replied, 'So be it.' Then he, approaching with due propriety, saw the foremost Rākṣasa.
पूजयामास धर्मेण रावणं राक्षसाधिपम् ।
प्राप्तपूजो दशग्रीवो मधुवेश्मनि वीर्यवान् ।
तत्र चैकां निशामुष्य गमनायोपचक्रमे ॥४९॥
49. pūjayāmāsa dharmeṇa rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam ,
prāptapūjo daśagrīvo madhuveśmani vīryavān ,
tatra caikāṃ niśāmuṣya gamanāyopacakrame.

rākṣasa-adhipam prāpta-pūjaḥ daśagrīvaḥ
madhu-veśmani vīryavān tatra ca

49. Madhu honored Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, in accordance with (dharma). The powerful Daśagrīva, having received proper hospitality at Madhu's dwelling, stayed there for one night, and then commenced his journey.
ततः कैलासमासाद्य शैलं वैश्रवणालयम् ।
राक्षसेन्द्रो महेन्द्राभः सेनामुपनिवेशयत् ॥५०॥
50. tataḥ kailāsamāsādya śailaṃ vaiśravaṇālayam ,
rākṣasendro mahendrābhaḥ senāmupaniveśayat.
50. tataḥ kailāsam āsādya śailam vaiśravaṇa-ālayam
rākṣasa-indraḥ mahā-indra-ābhaḥ senām upaniveśayat

50. Then, having reached Mount Kailāsa, the abode of Vaiśravaṇa, the king of the Rākṣasas, who was splendid like Mahendra, encamped his army.
