आज्ञाप्य तु महाराजो राघवस्याभिषेचनम् ।
प्रियार्हां प्रियमाख्यातुं विवेशान्तःपुरं वशी ॥१॥

1. After ordering Rama's (Rāghava) consecration, the self-controlled great King entered the inner palace to convey the good news to his beloved queen (Kaikeyi), who deserved pleasantness.
तां तत्र पतितां भूमौ शयानामतथोचिताम् ।
प्रतप्त इव दुःखेन सो ऽपश्यज्जगतीपतिः ॥२॥
2. tāṃ tatra patitāṃ bhūmau śayānāmatathocitām ,
pratapta iva duḥkhena so'paśyajjagatīpatiḥ.
2. tām tatra patitām bhūmau śayānām atathocitām
prataptaḥ iva duḥkhena saḥ apaśyat jagatīpatiḥ

2. The lord of the earth (King Dasharatha) saw her there, lying fallen on the ground in a manner utterly unsuited to her rank, as if tormented by sorrow.
स वृद्धस्तरुणीं भार्यां प्राणेभ्यो ऽपि गरीयसीम् ।
अपापः पापसंकल्पां ददर्श धरणीतले ॥३॥
3. sa vṛddhastaruṇīṃ bhāryāṃ prāṇebhyo'pi garīyasīm ,
apāpaḥ pāpasaṃkalpāṃ dadarśa dharaṇītale.
3. saḥ vṛddhaḥ taruṇīm bhāryām prāṇebhyaḥ api
garīyasīm | apāpaḥ pāpasaṅkalpām dadarśa dharaṇītale

3. The innocent old man saw his young wife, who harbored sinful intentions but was dearer to him than life itself, lying on the ground.
करेणुमिव दिग्धेन विद्धां मृगयुणा वने ।
महागज इवारण्ये स्नेहात् परिममर्श ताम् ॥४॥
4. kareṇumiva digdhena viddhāṃ mṛgayuṇā vane ,
mahāgaja ivāraṇye snehāt parimamarśa tām.
4. kareṇum iva digdhena viddhām mṛgayuṇā vane |
mahāgajaḥ iva araṇye snehāt parimamarśa tām
4. (saḥ) araṇye mahāgajaḥ iva snehāt vane mṛgayuṇā
digdhena viddhām kareṇum iva tām parimamarśa
4. He caressed her out of love (sneha), like a great elephant (mahāgaja) in the wilderness, while she lay there like a female elephant (kareṇu) wounded by a hunter's poisoned arrow in the forest.
परिमृश्य च पाणिभ्यामभिसंत्रस्तचेतनः ।
कामी कमलपत्राक्षीमुवाच वनितामिदम् ॥५॥
5. parimṛśya ca pāṇibhyāmabhisaṃtrastacetanaḥ ,
kāmī kamalapatrākṣīmuvāca vanitāmidam.

5. ca pāṇibhyām parimṛśya,

5. And having caressed her with his hands, he, the desirous man, whose mind was exceedingly agitated, spoke these words to the woman with eyes like lotus petals.
न ते ऽहमभिजानामि क्रोधमात्मनि संश्रितम् ।
देवि केनाभियुक्तासि केन वासि विमानिता ॥६॥
6. na te'hamabhijānāmi krodhamātmani saṃśritam ,
devi kenābhiyuktāsi kena vāsi vimānitā.
6. na te aham abhijānāmi krodham ātmani saṃśritam
| devi kena abhiyuktā asi kena vā asi vimānitā
6. devi,
te ātmani saṃśritam krodham aham na abhijānāmi.
kena vā abhiyuktā asi? kena vā vimānitā asi?
6. O Lady, I do not perceive any anger residing within your inner being (ātman). By whom have you been attacked, or by whom have you been insulted?
यदिदं मम दुःखाय शेषे कल्याणि पांसुषु ।
भूमौ शेषे किमर्थं त्वं मयि कल्याण चेतसि ।
भूतोपहतचित्तेव मम चित्तप्रमाथिनी ॥७॥
7. yadidaṃ mama duḥkhāya śeṣe kalyāṇi pāṃsuṣu ,
bhūmau śeṣe kimarthaṃ tvaṃ mayi kalyāṇa cetasi ,
bhūtopahatacitteva mama cittapramāthinī.
7. yat idam mama duḥkhāya śeṣe kalyāṇi
pāṃsuṣu bhūmau śeṣe kimartham
tvam mayi kalyāṇa cetasi bhūtopahatacittā
iva mama cittapramāthinī
7. kalyāṇi,
yat idam mama duḥkhāya (asti),
(tvam) pāṃsuṣu śeṣe.
kimartham tvam bhūmau śeṣe? mayi kalyāṇa cetasi bhūtopahatacittā iva (saṃti),
mama cittapramāthinī (asi).
7. O beautiful lady, why do you lie in the dust, causing me such sorrow? Why do you lie on the ground, when you are in my auspicious heart, tormenting my mind as if your own mind were afflicted by spirits?
सन्ति मे कुशला वैद्या अभितुष्टाश्च सर्वशः ।
सुखितां त्वां करिष्यन्ति व्याधिमाचक्ष्व भामिनि ॥८॥
8. santi me kuśalā vaidyā abhituṣṭāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
sukhitāṃ tvāṃ kariṣyanti vyādhimācakṣva bhāmini.
8. santi me kuśalā vaidyāḥ abhitustāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
sukhitām tvām karişyanti vyādhim ācakṣva bhāmini
8. me kuśalāḥ abhitustāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ vaidyāḥ santi.
te tvām sukhitām karişyanti.
bhāmini,
vyādhim ācakṣva.
8. I have skilled physicians who are completely dedicated. They will make you well; therefore, tell me your illness, O beautiful lady.
कस्य वा ते प्रियं कार्यं केन वा विप्रियं कृतम् ।
कः प्रियं लभतामद्य को वा सुमहदप्रियम् ॥९॥
9. kasya vā te priyaṃ kāryaṃ kena vā vipriyaṃ kṛtam ,
kaḥ priyaṃ labhatāmadya ko vā sumahadapriyam.
9. kasya vā te priyam kāryam kena vā vipriyam kṛtam
kaḥ priyam labhatām adya kaḥ vā su-mahat apriyam
9. vā te kasya priyam kāryam (astu)?
vā kena vipriyam kṛtam (asti)?
adya kaḥ priyam labhatām? vā
kaḥ sumahat apriyam (labhatām)?
9. For whose sake should a favor be done for you, or by whom has an offense been committed against you? Who should receive a favor today, or who a great misfortune?
अवध्यो वध्यतां को वा वध्यः को वा विमुच्यताम् ।
दरिद्रः को भवत्वाढ्यो द्रव्यवान् वाप्यकिंचनः ॥१०॥
10. avadhyo vadhyatāṃ ko vā vadhyaḥ ko vā vimucyatām ,
daridraḥ ko bhavatvāḍhyo dravyavān vāpyakiṃcanaḥ.
10. avadhyaḥ vadhyatām kaḥ vā vadhyaḥ kaḥ vā vimucyatām
daridraḥ kaḥ bhavatu āḍhyaḥ dravyavān vā api akiṃcanaḥ
10. vā avadhyaḥ kaḥ vadhyatām? vā
vadhyaḥ kaḥ vimucyatām? kaḥ daridraḥ
āḍhyaḥ bhavatu? vā dravyavān
kaḥ api akiṃcanaḥ (bhavatu)?
10. Let who, though not deserving of death, be executed? Or let who, though deserving of death, be released? Let who, though poor, become wealthy? Or let who, though rich, become penniless?
अहं चैव मदीयाश्च सर्वे तव वशानुगाः ।
न ते कं चिदभिप्रायं व्याहन्तुमहमुत्सहे ॥११॥
11. ahaṃ caiva madīyāśca sarve tava vaśānugāḥ ,
na te kaṃ cidabhiprāyaṃ vyāhantumahamutsahe.
11. aham ca eva madīyāḥ ca sarve tava vaśānugāḥ na
te kam cit abhiprāyam vyāhantum aham utsahe
11. aham ca eva madīyāḥ ca sarve tava vaśānugāḥ
aham te kam cit abhiprāyam vyāhantum na utsahe
11. Both I and all those who belong to me are obedient to your will. I am not at all inclined to obstruct any intention of yours.
आत्मनो जीवितेनापि ब्रूहि यन्मनसेच्छसि ।
यावदावर्तते चक्रं तावती मे वसुंधरा ॥१२॥
12. ātmano jīvitenāpi brūhi yanmanasecchasi ,
yāvadāvartate cakraṃ tāvatī me vasuṃdharā.
12. ātmanaḥ jīvitena api brūhi yat manasā icchasi
yāvat āvartate cakram tāvatī me vasundharā
12. manasā yat icchasi ātmanaḥ jīvitena api brūhi
yāvat cakram āvartate tāvatī me vasundharā
12. Speak what you desire in your mind, even by your own life (ātman). My kingdom (vasundharā) extends as far as the wheel [of my power] revolves.
तथोक्ता सा समाश्वस्ता वक्तुकामा तदप्रियम् ।
परिपीडयितुं भूयो भर्तारमुपचक्रमे ॥१३॥
13. tathoktā sā samāśvastā vaktukāmā tadapriyam ,
paripīḍayituṃ bhūyo bhartāramupacakrame.
13. tathā uktā sā samāśvastā vaktukāmā tat apriyam
paripīḍayitum bhūyaḥ bhartāram upacakrame
13. sā tathā uktā samāśvastā tat apriyam vaktukāmā
bhūyaḥ bhartāram paripīḍayitum upacakrame
13. Thus addressed, she was comforted, and, wishing to speak that unpleasant thing, she again proceeded to torment her husband.
नास्मि विप्रकृता देव केन चिन्न विमानिता ।
अभिप्रायस्तु मे कश्चित्तमिच्छामि त्वया कृतम् ॥१४॥
14. nāsmi viprakṛtā deva kena cinna vimānitā ,
abhiprāyastu me kaścittamicchāmi tvayā kṛtam.
14. na asmi viprakṛtā deva kena cit na vimānitā
abhiprāyaḥ tu me kaścit tam icchāmi tvayā kṛtam
14. deva kena cit na viprakṛtā na vimānitā asmi tu me kaścit abhiprāyaḥ [asti],
tam tvayā kṛtam icchāmi
14. O lord (deva), I have not been wronged by anyone, nor have I been dishonored. But there is a certain desire of mine, and I wish it to be fulfilled by you.
प्रतिज्ञां प्रतिजानीष्व यदि त्वं कर्तुमिच्छसि ।
अथ तद्व्याहरिष्यामि यदभिप्रार्थितं मया ॥१५॥
15. pratijñāṃ pratijānīṣva yadi tvaṃ kartumicchasi ,
atha tadvyāhariṣyāmi yadabhiprārthitaṃ mayā.
15. pratijñām pratijānīṣva yadi tvam kartum icchasi
| atha tat vyāhariṣyāmi yat abhiprārthitam mayā
15. tvam yadi pratijñām kartum icchasi,
(tām) pratijānīṣva atha mayā yat abhiprārthitam,
tat vyāhariṣyāmi.
15. If you wish to do (this), then make a solemn vow. Thereafter, I will declare what has been requested by me.
एवमुक्तस्तया राजा प्रियया स्त्रीवशं गतः ।
तामुवाच महातेजाः कैकेयीमीषदुत्स्मितः ॥१६॥
16. evamuktastayā rājā priyayā strīvaśaṃ gataḥ ,
tāmuvāca mahātejāḥ kaikeyīmīṣadutsmitaḥ.
16. evam uktaḥ tayā rājā priyayā strī-vaśam gataḥ
| tām uvāca mahā-tejāḥ kaikeyīm īṣat utsmitaḥ
16. evam tayā priyayā strī-vaśam gataḥ rājā uktaḥ mahā-tejāḥ saḥ īṣat utsmitaḥ kaikeyīm tām uvāca.
16. Thus addressed by his dear wife, the king, who had fallen under the sway of a woman, that greatly resplendent one, smiling slightly, spoke to Kaikeyī.
अवलिप्ते न जानासि त्वत्तः प्रियतरो मम ।
मनुजो मनुजव्याघ्राद् रामादन्यो न विद्यते ॥१७॥
17. avalipte na jānāsi tvattaḥ priyataro mama ,
manujo manujavyāghrād rāmādanyo na vidyate.
17. avalipte na jānāsi tvattaḥ priyataraḥ mama |
manu-jaḥ manu-ja-vyāghrāt rāmāt anyaḥ na vidyate
17. avalipte! tvam na jānāsi mama tvattaḥ priyataraḥ manu-jaḥ na vidyate; manu-ja-vyāghrāt rāmāt anyaḥ (manu-jaḥ) na vidyate.
17. O arrogant one! You do not know that there is no other man (manu-ja) dearer to me than you, nor is there any other apart from Rāma, that tiger among men (manu-ja-vyāghra).
भद्रे हृदयमप्येतदनुमृश्श्योद्धरस्व मे ।
एतत् समीक्ष्य कैकेयि ब्रूहि यत् साधु मन्यसे ॥१८॥
18. bhadre hṛdayamapyetadanumṛśśyoddharasva me ,
etat samīkṣya kaikeyi brūhi yat sādhu manyase.
18. bhadre hṛdayam api etat anumṛśya uddharasva me
| etat samīkṣya kaikeyī brūhi yat sādhu manyase
18. bhadre! me hṛdayam api etat anumṛśya,
(tataḥ) uddharasva kaikeyī! etat samīkṣya,
yat sādhu manyase,
(tat) brūhi.
18. O auspicious one (bhadre)! Even after examining this heart of mine, decide for me. O Kaikeyī! Considering this (request), speak what you deem proper.
बलमात्मनि पश्यन्ती न मां शङ्कितुमर्हसि ।
करिष्यामि तव प्रीतिं सुकृतेनापि ते शपे ॥१९॥
19. balamātmani paśyantī na māṃ śaṅkitumarhasi ,
kariṣyāmi tava prītiṃ sukṛtenāpi te śape.
19. balam ātmani paśyantī na mām śaṅkitum arhasi
kariṣyāmi tava prītim sukṛtena api te śape
19. ātmani balam paśyantī,
mām śaṅkitum na arhasi.
te sukṛtena api,
tava prītim kariṣyāmi śape.
19. Perceiving the strength within your own self (ātman), you should not doubt me. I will certainly fulfill your desire; I swear to you even by my merits.
तेन वाक्येन संहृष्टा तमभिप्रायमात्मनः ।
व्याजहार महाघोरमभ्यागतमिवान्तकम् ॥२०॥
20. tena vākyena saṃhṛṣṭā tamabhiprāyamātmanaḥ ,
vyājahāra mahāghoramabhyāgatamivāntakam.
20. tena vākyena saṃhṛṣṭā tam abhiprāyam ātmanaḥ
vyājahāra mahāghoram abhyāgatam iva antakam
20. tena vākyena saṃhṛṣṭā sā ātmanaḥ tam mahāghoram abhiprāyam,
abhyāgatam antakam iva vyājahāra.
20. Greatly delighted by those words, she expressed her intention, which was exceedingly dreadful, as if it were Death (Antaka) himself who had approached her.
यथाक्रमेण शपसि वरं मम ददासि च ।
तच्छृण्वन्तु त्रयस्त्रिंशद्देवाः सेन्द्रपुरोगमाः ॥२१॥
21. yathākrameṇa śapasi varaṃ mama dadāsi ca ,
tacchṛṇvantu trayastriṃśaddevāḥ sendrapurogamāḥ.
21. yathākrameṇa śapasi varam mama dadāsi ca tat
śṛṇvantu trayastriṃśat devāḥ sendrapurogamāḥ
21. yathākrameṇa śapasi ca mama varam dadāsi,
tat sendrapurogamāḥ trayastriṃśat devāḥ śṛṇvantu.
21. Since you swear according to proper procedure and grant me a boon, let the thirty-three gods, with Indra as their foremost, hear this.
चन्द्रादित्यौ नभश्चैव ग्रहा रात्र्यहनी दिशः ।
जगच्च पृथिवी चैव सगन्धर्वा सराक्षसा ॥२२॥
22. candrādityau nabhaścaiva grahā rātryahanī diśaḥ ,
jagacca pṛthivī caiva sagandharvā sarākṣasā.
22. candra ādityau nabhaḥ ca eva grahāḥ rātryahanī diśaḥ
jagat ca pṛthivī ca eva sagandharvāḥ sarākṣasāḥ
22. candra ādityau,
nabhaḥ ca eva,
grahāḥ,
rātryahanī,
diśaḥ,
jagat ca,
pṛthivī ca eva,
sagandharvāḥ,
sarākṣasāḥ (śṛṇvantu).
22. Let the Moon and the Sun, the sky, the planets, night and day, the cardinal directions, and the world and the Earth, along with the Gandharvas and Rākṣasas, hear this.
निशाचराणि भूतानि गृहेषु गृहदेवताः ।
यानि चान्यानि भूतानि जानीयुर्भाषितं तव ॥२३॥
23. niśācarāṇi bhūtāni gṛheṣu gṛhadevatāḥ ,
yāni cānyāni bhūtāni jānīyurbhāṣitaṃ tava.
23. niśācarāṇi bhūtāni gṛheṣu gṛhadevatāḥ yāni
ca anyāni bhūtāni jānīyuḥ bhāṣitaṃ tava
23. niśācarāṇi bhūtāni gṛheṣu gṛhadevatāḥ ca
yāni anyāni bhūtāni tava bhāṣitaṃ jānīyuḥ
23. May the night-roaming spirits, the household deities in the houses, and whatever other beings exist, understand your speech.
सत्यसंधो महातेजा धर्मज्ञः सुसमाहितः ।
वरं मम ददात्येष तन्मे शृण्वन्तु देवताः ॥२४॥
24. satyasaṃdho mahātejā dharmajñaḥ susamāhitaḥ ,
varaṃ mama dadātyeṣa tanme śṛṇvantu devatāḥ.
24. satyasaṃdhaḥ mahātejāḥ dharmajñaḥ susamāhitaḥ
varam mama dadāti eṣaḥ tat me śṛṇvantu devatāḥ
24. eṣaḥ satyasaṃdhaḥ mahātejāḥ dharmajñaḥ susamāhitaḥ
mama varam dadāti tat devatāḥ me śṛṇvantu
24. This one, firm in truth, immensely powerful, knowledgeable in natural law (dharma), and very resolute, is granting me a boon. Therefore, may the deities listen to my words.
इति देवी महेष्वासं परिगृह्याभिशस्य च ।
ततः परमुवाचेदं वरदं काममोहितम् ॥२५॥
25. iti devī maheṣvāsaṃ parigṛhyābhiśasya ca ,
tataḥ paramuvācedaṃ varadaṃ kāmamohitam.
25. iti devī maheṣvāsaṃ parigṛhya abhiśasya ca
tataḥ param uvāca idam varadaṃ kāmamohitam
25. iti devī maheṣvāsaṃ parigṛhya ca abhiśasya
tataḥ param varadaṃ kāmamohitam idam uvāca
25. Thus, the goddess, having embraced the great archer and praised him, then spoke these words to the boon-giver, who was overcome by desire.
वरौ यौ मे त्वया देव तदा दत्तौ महीपते ।
तौ तावदहमद्यैव वक्ष्यामि शृणु मे वचः ॥२६॥
26. varau yau me tvayā deva tadā dattau mahīpate ,
tau tāvadahamadyaiva vakṣyāmi śṛṇu me vacaḥ.
26. varau yau me tvayā deva tadā dattau mahīpate
tau tāvat aham adya eva vakṣyāmi śṛṇu me vacaḥ
26. deva mahīpate yau varau me tvayā tadā dattau
tau tāvat aham adya eva vakṣyāmi me vacaḥ śṛṇu
26. O god, O king, I shall now declare those two boons which you granted me at that time. Listen to my words.
अभिषेक समारम्भो राघवस्योपकल्पितः ।
अनेनैवाभिषेकेण भरतो मे ऽभिषिच्यताम् ॥२७॥
27. abhiṣeka samārambho rāghavasyopakalpitaḥ ,
anenaivābhiṣekeṇa bharato me'bhiṣicyatām.
27. abhiṣeka samārambhaḥ rāghavasya upakalpitaḥ
anena eva abhiṣekeṇa bharataḥ me abhiṣicyatām
27. rāghavasya abhiṣeka samārambhaḥ upakalpitaḥ (āste); anena eva abhiṣekeṇa me bharataḥ abhiṣicyatām.
27. The consecration ceremony (abhiṣeka) that was arranged for Rāghava (Rāma) should, with this very consecration, be performed for Bharata on my behalf.
नव पञ्च च वर्षाणि दण्डकारण्यमाश्रितः ।
चीराजिनजटाधारी रामो भवतु तापसः ॥२८॥
28. nava pañca ca varṣāṇi daṇḍakāraṇyamāśritaḥ ,
cīrājinajaṭādhārī rāmo bhavatu tāpasaḥ.
28. nava pañca ca varṣāṇi daṇḍakāraṇyam āśritaḥ
cīrājinajaṭādhārī rāmaḥ bhavatu tāpasaḥ
28. rāmaḥ nava pañca ca varṣāṇi daṇḍakāraṇyam āśritaḥ cīrājinajaṭādhārī tāpasaḥ bhavatu.
28. For fourteen years (nine and five years), Rāma should become an ascetic (tāpasa), residing in the Daṇḍaka forest, wearing bark garments, deerskin, and matted hair.
भरतो भजतामद्य यौवराज्यमकण्टकम् ।
अद्य चैव हि पश्येयं प्रयान्तं राघवं वने ॥२९॥
29. bharato bhajatāmadya yauvarājyamakaṇṭakam ,
adya caiva hi paśyeyaṃ prayāntaṃ rāghavaṃ vane.
29. bharataḥ bhajatām adya yauvarājyam akaṇṭakam
adya ca eva hi paśyeyam prayāntam rāghavam vane
29. adya bharataḥ akaṇṭakam yauvarājyam bhajatām.
ca adya eva hi (aham) rāghavam vane prayāntam paśyeyam.
29. Let Bharata enjoy the undisputed (thorn-less) co-regency today. And indeed, today I should see Rāghava departing to the forest.
ततः श्रुत्वा महाराजः कैकेय्या दारुणं वचः ।
व्यथितो विक्लवश्चैव व्याघ्रीं दृष्ट्वा यथा मृगः ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ śrutvā mahārājaḥ kaikeyyā dāruṇaṃ vacaḥ ,
vyathito viklavaścaiva vyāghrīṃ dṛṣṭvā yathā mṛgaḥ.
30. tataḥ śrutvā mahārājaḥ kaikeyā dāruṇam vacaḥ
vyathitaḥ viklavaḥ ca eva vyāghrīm dṛṣṭvā yathā mṛgaḥ
30. tataḥ mahārājaḥ kaikeyā dāruṇam vacaḥ śrutvā vyathitaḥ viklavaḥ ca eva (abhavat),
yathā mṛgaḥ vyāghrīm dṛṣṭvā (vyathitaḥ viklavaḥ abhavat).
30. Then, having heard the terrible words of Kaikeyī, the great king (Daśaratha) became distressed and agitated, just like a deer upon seeing a tigress.
असंवृतायामासीनो जगत्यां दीर्घमुच्छ्वसन् ।
अहो धिगिति सामर्षो वाचमुक्त्वा नराधिपः ।
मोहमापेदिवान्भूयः शोकोपहतचेतनः ॥३१॥
31. asaṃvṛtāyāmāsīno jagatyāṃ dīrghamucchvasan ,
aho dhigiti sāmarṣo vācamuktvā narādhipaḥ ,
mohamāpedivānbhūyaḥ śokopahatacetanaḥ.
31. asaṃvṛtāyām āsīnaḥ jagatyām dīrgham
ucchvasan aho dhik iti sāmarṣaḥ
vācam uktvā narādhipaḥ moham
āpedivān bhūyaḥ śokopahatacetanaḥ
31. narādhipaḥ asaṃvṛtāyām jagatyām
āsīnaḥ dīrgham ucchvasan sāmarṣaḥ
aho dhik iti vācam uktvā bhūyaḥ
śokopahatacetanaḥ moham āpedivān
31. Sitting on the bare ground, sighing deeply, the king, filled with indignation, exclaimed, "Alas, what a disgrace!" and then again fell into a state of unconsciousness (moha), his mind overwhelmed by grief.
चिरेण तु नृपः संज्ञां प्रतिलभ्य सुदुःखितः ।
कैकेयीमब्रवीत् क्रुद्धः प्रदहन्निव चक्षुषा ॥३२॥
32. cireṇa tu nṛpaḥ saṃjñāṃ pratilabhya suduḥkhitaḥ ,
kaikeyīmabravīt kruddhaḥ pradahanniva cakṣuṣā.
32. cireṇa tu nṛpaḥ saṃjñām pratilabhya sudukhitaḥ
kaikeyīm abravīt kruddhaḥ pradahan iva cakṣuṣā
32. tu nṛpaḥ cireṇa saṃjñām pratilabhya sudukhitaḥ
kruddhaḥ cakṣuṣā pradahan iva kaikeyīm abravīt
32. But after a long time, the king regained consciousness. Greatly distressed and enraged, he spoke to Kaikeyī as if burning her with his gaze.
नृशंसे दुष्टचारित्रे कुलस्यास्य विनाशिनि ।
किं कृतं तव रामेण पापे पापं मयापि वा ॥३३॥
33. nṛśaṃse duṣṭacāritre kulasyāsya vināśini ,
kiṃ kṛtaṃ tava rāmeṇa pāpe pāpaṃ mayāpi vā.
33. nṛśaṃse duṣṭacāritre kulasya asya vināśini
kim kṛtam tava rāmeṇa pāpe pāpam mayā api vā
33. nṛśaṃse duṣṭacāritre asya kulasya vināśini
pāpe kim pāpam tava rāmeṇa kṛtam api vā mayā
33. "O cruel one, O woman of evil character, O destroyer of this family! What wrong was done to you by Rama? Or even by me, O sinful woman?"
सदा ते जननी तुल्यां वृत्तिं वहति राघवः ।
तस्यैव त्वमनर्थाय किंनिमित्तमिहोद्यता ॥३४॥
34. sadā te jananī tulyāṃ vṛttiṃ vahati rāghavaḥ ,
tasyaiva tvamanarthāya kiṃnimittamihodyatā.
34. sadā te jananī tulyām vṛttim vahati rāghavaḥ
tasya eva tvam anarthāya kimnimittam iha udyatā
34. rāghavaḥ sadā te jananī tulyām vṛttim vahati.
tvam tasya anarthāya iha kimnimittam udyatā
34. "Rama (rāghava) always behaved towards you like a mother. For what reason are you now intent on causing him harm?"
त्वं मयात्मविनाशाय भवनं स्वं प्रवेशिता ।
अविज्ञानान्नृपसुता व्याली तीक्ष्णविषा यथा ॥३५॥
35. tvaṃ mayātmavināśāya bhavanaṃ svaṃ praveśitā ,
avijñānānnṛpasutā vyālī tīkṣṇaviṣā yathā.
35. tvam mayā ātma-vināśāya bhavanam svam praveśitā
avijñānāt nṛpasutā vyālī tīkṣṇa-viṣā yathā
35. nṛpasutā avijñānāt mayā tvam svam bhavanam
ātma-vināśāya praveśitā tīkṣṇa-viṣā vyālī yathā
35. O daughter of a king, I unknowingly brought you into my own palace, causing my self-destruction (ātman), just as one might bring in a venomous female serpent.
जीवलोको यदा सर्वो रामस्येह गुणस्तवम् ।
अपराधं कमुद्दिश्य त्यक्ष्यामीष्टमहं सुतम् ॥३६॥
36. jīvaloko yadā sarvo rāmasyeha guṇastavam ,
aparādhaṃ kamuddiśya tyakṣyāmīṣṭamahaṃ sutam.
36. jīvalokaḥ yadā sarvaḥ rāmasya iha guṇa-stavam
aparādham kam uddiśya tyakṣyāmi īṣṭam aham sutam
36. yadā iha sarvaḥ jīvalokaḥ rāmasya guṇa-stavam [praises],
aham kam aparādham uddiśya īṣṭam sutam tyakṣyāmi
36. When all living beings in this world glorify Rama's virtues, on account of what offense shall I abandon my beloved son?
कौसल्यां वा सुमित्रां वा त्यजेयमपि वा श्रियम् ।
जीवितं वात्मनो रामं न त्वेव पितृवत्सलम् ॥३७॥
37. kausalyāṃ vā sumitrāṃ vā tyajeyamapi vā śriyam ,
jīvitaṃ vātmano rāmaṃ na tveva pitṛvatsalam.
37. kausalyām vā sumitrām vā tyajeyam api vā śriyam
jīvitam vā ātmanaḥ rāmam na tu eva pitṛ-vatsalam
37. [aham] kausalyām vā sumitrām vā api śriyam vā ātmanaḥ
jīvitam vā tyajeyam tu pitṛ-vatsalam rāmam na eva [tyajeyam]
37. I could abandon Kausalya or Sumitra, or even my prosperity, or my very own life; but certainly not Rama, who is so devoted to his father.
परा भवति मे प्रीतिर्दृष्ट्वा तनयमग्रजम् ।
अपश्यतस्तु मे रामं नष्टा भवति चेतना ॥३८॥
38. parā bhavati me prītirdṛṣṭvā tanayamagrajam ,
apaśyatastu me rāmaṃ naṣṭā bhavati cetanā.
38. parā bhavati me prītiḥ dṛṣṭvā tanayam agrajam
apaśyataḥ tu me rāmam naṣṭā bhavati cetanā
38. agrajam tanayam dṛṣṭvā me prītiḥ parā bhavati
tu rāmam me apaśyataḥ cetanā naṣṭā bhavati
38. My joy becomes immense upon seeing my eldest son. But when I do not see Rama, my consciousness is lost.
तिष्ठेल् लोको विना सूर्यं सस्यं वा सलिलं विना ।
न तु रामं विना देहे तिष्ठेत्तु मम जीवितम् ॥३९॥
39. tiṣṭhel loko vinā sūryaṃ sasyaṃ vā salilaṃ vinā ,
na tu rāmaṃ vinā dehe tiṣṭhettu mama jīvitam.
39. tiṣṭhet lokaḥ vinā sūryam sasyaṃ vā salilam vinā
na tu rāmam vinā dehe tiṣṭhet tu mama jīvitam
39. lokaḥ sūryam vinā sasyaṃ vā salilam vinā tiṣṭhet
tu mama jīvitam dehe rāmam vinā na tiṣṭhet
39. The world might exist without the sun, or crops without water, but my life cannot remain in my body without Rama.
तदलं त्यज्यतामेष निश्चयः पापनिश्चये ।
अपि ते चरणौ मूर्ध्ना स्पृशाम्येष प्रसीद मे ॥४०॥
40. tadalaṃ tyajyatāmeṣa niścayaḥ pāpaniścaye ,
api te caraṇau mūrdhnā spṛśāmyeṣa prasīda me.
40. tat alam tyajyatām eṣaḥ niścayaḥ pāpaniścaye
api te caraṇau mūrdhnā spṛśāmi eṣaḥ prasīda me
40. pāpaniścaye tat alam eṣaḥ niścayaḥ tyajyatām
api eṣaḥ te caraṇau mūrdhnā spṛśāmi me prasīda
40. Enough of this! O you of sinful resolve, abandon this decision. Indeed, I touch your two feet with my head; please be gracious to me.
स भूमिपालो विलपन्ननाथवत् स्त्रिया गृहीतो दृहये ऽतिमात्रता ।
पपात देव्याश्चरणौ प्रसारिताव् उभावसंस्पृश्य यथातुरस्तथा ॥४१॥
41. sa bhūmipālo vilapannanāthavat striyā gṛhīto dṛhaye'timātratā ,
papāta devyāścaraṇau prasāritāv ubhāvasaṃspṛśya yathāturastathā.
41. saḥ bhūmipālaḥ vilapan anāthavat
striyā gṛhītaḥ hṛdaye atimātratā
papāta devyāḥ caraṇau prasāritau
ubhau asaṃspṛśya yathā āturaḥ tathā
41. saḥ bhūmipālaḥ vilapan anāthavat
striyā gṛhītaḥ hṛdaye atimātratā
devyāḥ prasāritau ubhau caraṇau
asaṃspṛśya yathā āturaḥ tathā papāta
41. That king (bhūmipālaḥ), lamenting like an orphan, having been seized by the woman and overwhelmed by excessive emotion in his heart, fell without touching both the outstretched feet of the queen, just like a distressed person.
