श्रुत्वा तज्जामदग्न्यस्य वाक्यं दाशरथिस्तदा ।
गौरवाद् यन्त्रितकथः पितू राममथाब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. śrutvā tajjāmadagnyasya vākyaṃ dāśarathistadā ,

1. Then, Dasaratha's son (Rama), having heard that speech of Jamadagni's son (Parashurama), spoke to [Parashu]rama, with his words restrained out of deference to his father.
श्रुतवानस्मि यत् कर्म कृतवानसि भार्गव ।
अनुरुन्ध्यामहे ब्रह्मन्पितुरानृण्यमास्थितः ॥२॥
2. śrutavānasmi yat karma kṛtavānasi bhārgava ,
anurundhyāmahe brahmanpiturānṛṇyamāsthitaḥ.

2. O Bhargava, I have indeed heard what deeds (karma) you have accomplished. O Brahmin, we entreat you, as you are established in freedom from debt to your father.
वीर्यहीनमिवाशक्तं क्षत्रधर्मेण भार्गव ।
अवजानामि मे तेजः पश्य मे ऽद्य पराक्रमम् ॥३॥
3. vīryahīnamivāśaktaṃ kṣatradharmeṇa bhārgava ,
avajānāmi me tejaḥ paśya me'dya parākramam.
3. vīryahīnam iva aśaktam kṣatradharmeṇa bhārgava
avajānāmi me tejaḥ paśya me adya parākramam
3. bhārgava,
(tvam mām) vīryahīnam aśaktam iva kṣatradharmeṇa (paśyasi,
ataḥ) me tejaḥ avajānāmi.
adya me parākramam paśya.
3. O Bhargava, [you see me] as if I am devoid of valor and powerless, [which is contrary to] the constitution (dharma) of a warrior. [Therefore,] I disregard my own inherent power (tejaḥ) [and prepare for action]. Behold my prowess (parākrama) today!
इत्युक्त्वा राघवः क्रुद्धो भार्गवस्य वरायुधम् ।
शरं च प्रतिसंगृह्य हस्ताल् लघुपराक्रमः ॥४॥
4. ityuktvā rāghavaḥ kruddho bhārgavasya varāyudham ,
śaraṃ ca pratisaṃgṛhya hastāl laghuparākramaḥ.
4. iti uktvā rāghavaḥ kruddhaḥ bhārgavasya varāyudham
śaram ca pratisaṃgṛhya hastāt laghuparākramaḥ
4. rāghavaḥ kruddhaḥ laghuparākramaḥ iti uktvā
bhārgavasya hastāt varāyudham ca śaram pratisaṃgṛhya
4. Having spoken thus, Rama (Raghava), angered and of swift prowess, took back the excellent weapon (Parashurama's bow) and an arrow from Bhargava's hand.
आरोप्य स धनू रामः शरं सज्यं चकार ह ।
जामदग्न्यं ततो रामं रामः क्रुद्धो ऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥५॥
5. āropya sa dhanū rāmaḥ śaraṃ sajyaṃ cakāra ha ,
jāmadagnyaṃ tato rāmaṃ rāmaḥ kruddho'bravīdvacaḥ.
5. āropya sa dhanū rāmaḥ śaram sajyam cakāra ha
jāmadagnyam tataḥ rāmam rāmaḥ kruddhaḥ abravīt vacaḥ
5. sa rāmaḥ dhanū āropya śaram sajyam cakāra ha tataḥ
kruddhaḥ rāmaḥ jāmadagnyam rāmam vacaḥ abravīt
5. Having strung his bow, Rama (Dasharathi) made the arrow ready. Then, angered, Rama spoke these words to Rama, the son of Jamadagni (Parashurama).
ब्राह्मणो ऽसीति पूज्यो मे विश्वामित्रकृतेन च ।
तस्माच्छक्तो न ते राम मोक्तुं प्राणहरं शरम् ॥६॥
6. brāhmaṇo'sīti pūjyo me viśvāmitrakṛtena ca ,
tasmācchakto na te rāma moktuṃ prāṇaharaṃ śaram.
6. brāhmaṇaḥ asi iti pūjyaḥ me viśvāmitrakṛtena ca
tasmāt śaktaḥ na te rāma moktum prāṇaharam śaram
6. tvam brāhmaṇaḥ asi iti (kāraṇāt)
ca viśvāmitrakṛtena me pūjyaḥ
(asi) tasmāt (aham) te prāṇaharam
śaram moktum na śaktaḥ (asmi) rāma
6. "You are a Brahmin, and therefore venerable to me, also due to Viśvāmitra. Hence, O Rama, I am not able to discharge this life-taking arrow at you."
इमां वा त्वद्गतिं राम तपोबलसमार्जितान् ।
लोकानप्रतिमान् वापि हनिष्यामि यदिच्छसि ॥७॥
7. imāṃ vā tvadgatiṃ rāma tapobalasamārjitān ,
lokānapratimān vāpi haniṣyāmi yadicchasi.
7. imām vā tvadgatim rāma tapobalasamārjitān
lokān apratimān vā api haniṣyāmi yat icchasi
7. rāma,
vā imām tvadgatim,
vā api tapobalasamārjitān apratimān lokān,
yat icchasi (tat aham) haniṣyāmi
7. "Or, O Rama, I will destroy either this course of yours, or the incomparable worlds (lokas) you have acquired through the power of your austerities (tapas), whichever you desire."
न ह्ययं वैष्णवो दिव्यः शरः परपुरंजयः ।
मोघः पतति वीर्येण बलदर्पविनाशनः ॥८॥
8. na hyayaṃ vaiṣṇavo divyaḥ śaraḥ parapuraṃjayaḥ ,
moghaḥ patati vīryeṇa baladarpavināśanaḥ.
8. na hi ayam vaiṣṇavaḥ divyaḥ śaraḥ parapurajayaḥ
moghaḥ patati vīryeṇa baladarpavināśanaḥ
8. hi ayam divyaḥ vaiṣṇavaḥ parapurajayaḥ śaraḥ moghaḥ na patati,
(api tu) vīryeṇa baladarpavināśanaḥ (patati)
8. "Indeed, this divine arrow (śara) of Viṣṇu, which conquers enemy cities, cannot fall in vain; it destroys the pride of strength by its power."
वरायुधधरं राम द्रष्टुं सर्षिगणाः सुराः ।
पितामहं पुरस्कृत्य समेतास्तत्र संघशः ॥९॥
9. varāyudhadharaṃ rāma draṣṭuṃ sarṣigaṇāḥ surāḥ ,
pitāmahaṃ puraskṛtya sametāstatra saṃghaśaḥ.
9. varāyudhadharam rāma draṣṭum saṛṣigaṇāḥ surāḥ
pitāmaham puraskṛtya sametāḥ tatra saṅghaśaḥ
9. rāma surāḥ saṛṣigaṇāḥ pitāmaham puraskṛtya
tatra saṅghaśaḥ varāyudhadharam draṣṭum sametāḥ
9. O Rāma, the gods, accompanied by groups of sages, and having placed Brahmā (pitāmaha) at their forefront, gathered there in multitudes to behold you, who were bearing excellent weapons.
गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव सिद्धचारणकिंनराः ।
यक्षराक्षसनागाश्च तद्द्रष्टुं महदद्भुतम् ॥१०॥
10. gandharvāpsarasaścaiva siddhacāraṇakiṃnarāḥ ,
yakṣarākṣasanāgāśca taddraṣṭuṃ mahadadbhutam.
10. gandharvāpsarasaḥ ca eva siddhacāraṇakiṃnarāḥ
yakṣarākṣasanāgāḥ ca tat draṣṭum mahat adbhutam
10. gandharvāpsarasaḥ ca eva siddhacāraṇakiṃnarāḥ
yakṣarākṣasanāgāḥ ca mahat adbhutam tat draṣṭum
10. The Gandharvas and Apsarases, as well as the Siddhas, Caraṇas, and Kiṃnaras, and also the Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and Nāgas, all came to witness that great marvel.
जडीकृते तदा लोके रामे वरधनुर्धरे ।
निर्वीर्यो जामदग्न्यो ऽसौ रमो राममुदैक्षत ॥११॥
11. jaḍīkṛte tadā loke rāme varadhanurdhare ,
nirvīryo jāmadagnyo'sau ramo rāmamudaikṣata.
11. jaḍīkṛte tadā loke rāme varadhanurdhare
nirvīryaḥ jāmadagnyaḥ asau ramaḥ rāmam udaikṣata
11. tadā rāme varadhanurdhare loke jaḍīkṛte asau
nirvīryaḥ jāmadagnyaḥ ramaḥ rāmam udaikṣata
11. Then, with the world (loka) having become inert as Rāma wielded his excellent bow, that son of Jamadagni, Paraśurāma, now powerless (nirvīrya), gazed upon Rāma (Dāśarathi).
तेजोभिर्हतवीर्यत्वाज्जामदग्न्यो जडीकृतः ।
रामं कमल पत्राक्षं मन्दं मन्दमुवाच ह ॥१२॥
12. tejobhirhatavīryatvājjāmadagnyo jaḍīkṛtaḥ ,
rāmaṃ kamala patrākṣaṃ mandaṃ mandamuvāca ha.
12. tejobhiḥ hṛtavīryatvāt jāmadagnyaḥ jaḍīkṛtaḥ
rāmam kamalapatrākṣam mandam mandam uvāca ha
12. ha tejobhiḥ hṛtavīryatvāt jaḍīkṛtaḥ jāmadagnyaḥ
rāmam kamalapatrākṣam mandam mandam uvāca
12. Due to his strength having been taken away by the splendor (of Dāśarathi Rāma), Paraśurāma, who was now stunned (jaḍīkṛta), slowly and softly spoke to Rāma, whose eyes resembled lotus petals.
काश्यपाय मया दत्ता यदा पूर्वं वसुंधरा ।
विषये मे न वस्तव्यमिति मां काश्यपो ऽब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. kāśyapāya mayā dattā yadā pūrvaṃ vasuṃdharā ,
viṣaye me na vastavyamiti māṃ kāśyapo'bravīt.
13. kāśyapāya mayā dattā yadā pūrvaṃ vasundharā
viṣaye me na vastavyam iti māṃ kāśyapaḥ abravīt
13. yadā mayā pūrvaṃ vasundharā kāśyapāya dattā
iti kāśyapaḥ māṃ abravīt me viṣaye na vastavyam
13. When I formerly gave the earth to Kaśyapa, Kaśyapa told me, 'You should not reside in my territory.'
सो ऽहं गुरुवचः कुर्वन्पृथिव्यां न वसे निशाम् ।
इति प्रतिज्ञा काकुत्स्थ कृता वै काश्यपस्य ह ॥१४॥
14. so'haṃ guruvacaḥ kurvanpṛthivyāṃ na vase niśām ,
iti pratijñā kākutstha kṛtā vai kāśyapasya ha.
14. saḥ aham guruvacaḥ kurvan pṛthivyām na vase niśām
iti pratijñā kākutstha kṛtā vai kāśyapasyā ha
14. kākutstha saḥ aham guruvacaḥ kurvan niśām pṛthivyām
na vase iti pratijñā vai kāśyapasyā ha kṛtā
14. Therefore, O Kakutstha, fulfilling my teacher's command, I do not reside on the earth at night. This vow was indeed made regarding Kaśyapa.
तदिमां त्वं गतिं वीर हन्तुं नार्हसि राघव ।
मनोजवं गमिष्यामि महेन्द्रं पर्वतोत्तमम् ॥१५॥
15. tadimāṃ tvaṃ gatiṃ vīra hantuṃ nārhasi rāghava ,
manojavaṃ gamiṣyāmi mahendraṃ parvatottamam.
15. tat imām tvam gatim vīra hantum na arhasi rāghava
manojavam gamiṣyāmi mahendram parvatottamam
15. vīra rāghava tat tvam imām gatim hantum na arhasi
manojavam parvatottamam mahendram gamiṣyāmi
15. Therefore, O hero Raghava, you ought not to obstruct this course (my movement). I shall go with the speed of thought (manojavam) to Mahendra, the foremost of mountains.
लोकास्त्वप्रतिमा राम निर्जितास्तपसा मया ।
जहि ताञ् शरमुख्येन मा भूत् कालस्य पर्ययः ॥१६॥
16. lokāstvapratimā rāma nirjitāstapasā mayā ,
jahi tāñ śaramukhyena mā bhūt kālasya paryayaḥ.
16. lokāḥ tu apratimāḥ rāma nirjitāḥ tapasā mayā
jahi tān śaramukhyena mā bhūt kālasya paryayaḥ
16. rāma tu mayā tapasā apratimāḥ lokāḥ nirjitāḥ
śaramukhyena tān jahi kālasya paryayaḥ mā bhūt
16. O Rama, I have conquered unparalleled realms through my asceticism (tapas). Destroy them with your foremost arrow, lest there be a loss of time (kālasya paryayaḥ).
अक्षय्यं मधुहन्तारं जानामि त्वां सुरेश्वरम् ।
धनुषो ऽस्य परामर्शात् स्वस्ति ते ऽस्तु परंतप ॥१७॥
17. akṣayyaṃ madhuhantāraṃ jānāmi tvāṃ sureśvaram ,
dhanuṣo'sya parāmarśāt svasti te'stu paraṃtapa.
17. akṣayyam madhuhantāram jānāmi tvām sureśvaram
dhanuṣaḥ asya parāmarśāt svasti te astu paraṃtapa
17. paraṃtapa tvām akṣayyam madhuhantāram sureśvaram
jānāmi asya dhanuṣaḥ parāmarśāt te svasti astu
17. O scorcher of foes, I recognize you as the imperishable slayer of Madhu and the lord of the gods. May there be welfare for you due to your handling of this bow.
एते सुरगणाः सर्वे निरीक्षन्ते समागताः ।
त्वामप्रतिमकर्माणमप्रतिद्वन्द्वमाहवे ॥१८॥
18. ete suragaṇāḥ sarve nirīkṣante samāgatāḥ ,
tvāmapratimakarmāṇamapratidvandvamāhave.
18. ete suragaṇāḥ sarve nirīkṣante samāgatāḥ
tvām apratimakarmāṇam apratidvandvam āhave
18. ete sarve samāgatāḥ suragaṇāḥ tvām
apratimakarmāṇam apratidvandvam āhave nirīkṣante
18. All these assembled hosts of gods are observing you, whose deeds are unmatched and who are unrivaled in battle.
न चेयं मम काकुत्स्थ व्रीडा भवितुमर्हति ।
त्वया त्रैलोक्यनाथेन यदहं विमुखीकृतः ॥१९॥
19. na ceyaṃ mama kākutstha vrīḍā bhavitumarhati ,
tvayā trailokyanāthena yadahaṃ vimukhīkṛtaḥ.
19. na ca iyam mama kākutstha vrīḍā bhavitum arhati
yat aham vimukhīkṛtaḥ tvayā trailokyanāthena
19. kākutstha,
iyam vrīḍā mama bhavitum na ca arhati yat aham tvayā trailokyanāthena vimukhīkṛtaḥ
19. O scion of Kakutstha, this shame should not be mine, for I have been disregarded by you, the lord of the three worlds.
शरमप्रतिमं राम मोक्तुमर्हसि सुव्रत ।
शरमोक्षे गमिष्यामि महेन्द्रं पर्वतोत्तमम् ॥२०॥
20. śaramapratimaṃ rāma moktumarhasi suvrata ,
śaramokṣe gamiṣyāmi mahendraṃ parvatottamam.
20. śaram apratimam rāma moktum arhasi suvrata
śaramokṣe gamiṣyāmi mahendram parvatottamam
20. rāma suvrata,
apratimam śaram moktum arhasi.
śaramokṣe mahendram parvatottamam gamiṣyāmi
20. O Rama, O righteous one, you ought to release this unequaled arrow. Upon the arrow's release, I will go to Mahendra, the best of mountains.
तथा ब्रुवति रामे तु जामदग्न्ये प्रतापवान् ।
रामो दाशरथिः श्रीमांश्चिक्षेप शरमुत्तमम् ॥२१॥
21. tathā bruvati rāme tu jāmadagnye pratāpavān ,
rāmo dāśarathiḥ śrīmāṃścikṣepa śaramuttamam.
21. tathā bruvati rāme tu jāmadagnye pratāpavān
rāmaḥ dāśarathiḥ śrīmān cikṣepa śaram uttamam
21. tathā jāmadagnye rāme bruvati tu pratāpavān
śrīmān dāśarathiḥ rāmaḥ uttamam śaram cikṣepa
21. While Rāma Jāmadagnya was speaking thus, the glorious and mighty Rāma, son of Daśaratha, shot an excellent arrow.
ततो वितिमिराः सर्वा दिशा चोपदिशस्तथा ।
सुराः सर्षिगणा रामं प्रशशंसुरुदायुधम् ॥२२॥
22. tato vitimirāḥ sarvā diśā copadiśastathā ,
surāḥ sarṣigaṇā rāmaṃ praśaśaṃsurudāyudham.
22. tataḥ vitimirāḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ ca upadiśaḥ tathā
surāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ rāmam praśaśaṃsuḥ udāyudham
22. tataḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ ca upadiśaḥ tathā vitimirāḥ
surāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ udāyudham rāmam praśaśaṃsuḥ
22. Then all directions and intermediate directions became clear. The gods, along with the groups of sages, praised Rāma, who stood with his weapon raised.
रामं दाशरथिं रामो जामदग्न्यः प्रशस्य च ।
ततः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य जगामात्मगतिं प्रभुः ॥२३॥
23. rāmaṃ dāśarathiṃ rāmo jāmadagnyaḥ praśasya ca ,
tataḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya jagāmātmagatiṃ prabhuḥ.
23. rāmam dāśarathim rāmaḥ jāmadagnyaḥ praśasya ca
tataḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya jagāma ātmagatim prabhuḥ
23. ca jāmadagnyaḥ prabhuḥ rāmaḥ dāśarathim rāmam
praśasya tataḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya ātmagatim jagāma
23. And having praised Rāma, son of Daśaratha, Rāma Jāmadagnya, the lord, then circumambulated him and departed to his own destination.
