तथा तयोः कथयतोर्दुर्वासा भगवानृषिः ।
रामस्य दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी राजद्वारमुपागमत् ॥१॥

1. While those two were thus speaking, the revered sage (muni) Durvasa, longing to see Rama, approached the royal gate.
सो ऽभिगम्य च सौमित्रिमुवाच ऋषिसत्तमः ।
रामं दर्शय मे शीघ्रं पुरा मे ऽर्थो ऽतिवर्तते ॥२॥
2. so'bhigamya ca saumitrimuvāca ṛṣisattamaḥ ,
rāmaṃ darśaya me śīghraṃ purā me'rtho'tivartate.
2. saḥ abhigamya ca saumitrim uvāca ṛṣisattamaḥ
rāmam darśaya me śīghram purā me arthaḥ ativartate
2. saḥ ṛṣisattamaḥ ca abhigamya saumitrim uvāca me
rāmam śīghram darśaya purā me arthaḥ ativartate
2. And having approached Saumitri (Lakshmana), the best of sages said, 'Show Rama to me quickly, before my purpose is thwarted.'
मुनेस्तु भाषितं श्रुत्वा लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ।
अभिवाद्य महात्मानं वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥३॥
3. munestu bhāṣitaṃ śrutvā lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ,
abhivādya mahātmānaṃ vākyametaduvāca ha.
3. muneḥ tu bhāṣitam śrutvā lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā
abhivādya mahātmānam vākyam etat uvāca ha
3. tu lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā muneḥ bhāṣitam śrutvā
mahātmānam abhivādya etat vākyam uvāca ha
3. But Lakshmana, the slayer of enemy heroes, having heard the words of the sage (muni), and having saluted the great-souled one (ātman), indeed spoke this statement.
किं कार्यं ब्रूहि भगवन् को वार्थः किं करोम्यहम् ।
व्यग्रो हि राघवो ब्रह्मन्मुहूर्तं वा प्रतीक्षताम् ॥४॥
4. kiṃ kāryaṃ brūhi bhagavan ko vārthaḥ kiṃ karomyaham ,
vyagro hi rāghavo brahmanmuhūrtaṃ vā pratīkṣatām.
4. kim kāryam brūhi bhagavan kaḥ vā arthaḥ kim karomi aham
vyagraḥ hi rāghavaḥ brahman muhūrtam vā pratīkṣatām
4. bhagavan kim kāryam brūhi kaḥ vā arthaḥ aham kim karomi
brahman rāghavaḥ hi vyagraḥ muhūrtam vā pratīkṣatām
4. Tell me, O revered one, what needs to be done? What is the purpose? What should I do? Indeed, Rāghava (Rāma) is busy, O Brahmin; let him wait for a moment.
तच्छ्रुत्वा ऋषिशार्दूलः क्रोधेन कलुषीकृतः ।
उवाच लक्ष्मणं वाक्यं निर्दहन्निव चक्षुषा ॥५॥
5. tacchrutvā ṛṣiśārdūlaḥ krodhena kaluṣīkṛtaḥ ,
uvāca lakṣmaṇaṃ vākyaṃ nirdahanniva cakṣuṣā.
5. tat śrutvā ṛṣiśārdūlaḥ krodhena kaluṣīkṛtaḥ
uvāca lakṣmaṇam vākyam nirdahan iva cakṣuṣā
5. ṛṣiśārdūlaḥ tat śrutvā krodhena kaluṣīkṛtaḥ
lakṣmaṇam vākyam nirdahan iva cakṣuṣā uvāca
5. Having heard that, the foremost of sages, his mind clouded by anger, spoke these words to Lakṣmaṇa, as if burning him with his eyes.
अस्मिन् क्षणे मां सौमित्रे रामाय प्रतिवेदय ।
विषयं त्वां पुरं चैव शपिष्ये राघवं तथा ॥६॥
6. asmin kṣaṇe māṃ saumitre rāmāya prativedaya ,
viṣayaṃ tvāṃ puraṃ caiva śapiṣye rāghavaṃ tathā.
6. asmin kṣaṇe mām saumitre rāmāya prativedaya
viṣayam tvām puram ca eva śapiṣye rāghavam tathā
6. saumitre asmin kṣaṇe mām rāmāya prativedaya
viṣayam tvām puram ca eva tathā rāghavam śapiṣye
6. O son of Sumitrā, inform Rāma about me at this very moment! I shall curse the dominion, you, the city, and Rāghava (Rāma) as well.
भरतं चैव सौमित्रे युष्माकं या च संततिः ।
न हि शक्ष्याम्यहं भूयो मन्युं धारयितुं हृदि ॥७॥
7. bharataṃ caiva saumitre yuṣmākaṃ yā ca saṃtatiḥ ,
na hi śakṣyāmyahaṃ bhūyo manyuṃ dhārayituṃ hṛdi.
7. bharatam ca eva saumitre yuṣmākam yā ca santatiḥ
na hi śakṣyāmi aham bhūyaḥ manyum dhārayitum hṛdi
7. saumitre bharatam ca eva yuṣmākam yā ca santatiḥ
aham bhūyaḥ manyum hṛdi dhārayitum na hi śakṣyāmi
7. And Bharata as well, O son of Sumitrā, and whatever progeny you all have! Indeed, I shall no longer be able to bear this wrath in my heart.
तच्छ्रुत्वा घोरसंकाशं वाक्यं तस्य महात्मनः ।
चिन्तयामास मनसा तस्य वाक्यस्य निश्चयम् ॥८॥
8. tacchrutvā ghorasaṃkāśaṃ vākyaṃ tasya mahātmanaḥ ,
cintayāmāsa manasā tasya vākyasya niścayam.
8. tat śrutvā ghorasaṃkāśam vākyam tasya mahātmanaḥ
cintayāmāsa manasā tasya vākyasya niścayam
8. tasya mahātmanaḥ tat ghorasaṃkāśam vākyam śrutvā
manasā tasya vākyasya niścayam cintayāmāsa
8. Having heard that dreadful statement of the great soul (mahātman), he pondered in his mind its true meaning.
एकस्य मरणं मे ऽस्तु मा भूत् सर्वविनाशनम् ।
इति बुद्ध्या विनिश्चित्य राघवाय न्यवेदयत् ॥९॥
9. ekasya maraṇaṃ me'stu mā bhūt sarvavināśanam ,
iti buddhyā viniścitya rāghavāya nyavedayat.
9. ekasya maraṇam me astu mā bhūt sarvavināśanam
iti buddhyā viniścitya rāghavāya nyavedayat
9. ekasya maraṇam me astu sarvavināśanam mā bhūt

9. 'Let there be the death of one of us, but let there not be the destruction of all.' Having firmly decided this with his intellect, he reported it to Rāghava (Rāma).
लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा रामः कालं विसृज्य च ।
निष्पत्य त्वरितं राजा अत्रेः पुत्रं ददर्श ह ॥१०॥
10. lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā rāmaḥ kālaṃ visṛjya ca ,
niṣpatya tvaritaṃ rājā atreḥ putraṃ dadarśa ha.
10. lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā rāmaḥ kālam visṛjya ca
niṣpatya tvaritam rājā atreḥ putram dadarśa ha
10. rāmaḥ rājā lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā kālam visṛjya
ca tvaritam niṣpatya atreḥ putram dadarśa ha
10. Having heard Lakṣmaṇa's words, and having dismissed Kālam (the god of time), King Rāma quickly came forth and indeed saw the son of Atri.
सो ऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा ।
किं कार्यमिति काकुत्स्थः कृताञ्जलिरभाषत ॥११॥
11. so'bhivādya mahātmānaṃ jvalantamiva tejasā ,
kiṃ kāryamiti kākutsthaḥ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata.
11. saḥ abhivādya mahātmānam jvalantam iva tejasā
kim kāryam iti kākutsthaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ abhāṣata
11. saḥ kākutsthaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ tejasā jvalantam iva
mahātmānam abhivādya kim kāryam iti abhāṣata
11. Having saluted the great soul (mahātman), who was shining as if with brilliance, Kākutstha (Rāma) spoke with folded hands, asking, 'What is the purpose?'
तद्वाक्यं राघवेण्णोक्तं श्रुत्वा मुनिवरः प्रभुः ।
प्रत्याह रामं दुर्वासाः श्रूयतां धर्मवत्सल ॥१२॥
12. tadvākyaṃ rāghaveṇṇoktaṃ śrutvā munivaraḥ prabhuḥ ,
pratyāha rāmaṃ durvāsāḥ śrūyatāṃ dharmavatsala.
12. tad vākyam rāghaveṇa uktam śrutvā munivaraḥ prabhuḥ
pratyāha rāmam durvāsāḥ śrūyatām dharmavatsala
12. rāghaveṇa uktam tat vākyam śrutvā,
prabhuḥ munivaraḥ durvāsāḥ rāmam pratyāha,
"dharmavatsala,
śrūyatām!"
12. Having heard that statement spoken by Rāghava, the eminent and powerful sage Durvāsas replied to Rāma, "O one devoted to (dharma), listen!"
अद्य वर्षसहस्रस्य समाप्तिर्मम राघव ।
सो ऽहं भोजनमिच्छामि यथासिद्धं तवानघ ॥१३॥
13. adya varṣasahasrasya samāptirmama rāghava ,
so'haṃ bhojanamicchāmi yathāsiddhaṃ tavānagha.
13. adya varṣasahasrasya samāptiḥ mama rāghava saḥ
aham bhojanam icchāmi yathāsiddham tava anagha
13. rāghava,
anagha,
adya mama varṣasahasrasya samāptiḥ.
saḥ aham tava yathāsiddham bhojanam icchāmi.
13. "O Rāghava, today marks the completion of my thousand years. Therefore, O sinless one, I desire whatever food is readily available from you."
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं रामो हर्षेण महतान्वितः ।
भोजनं मुनिमुख्याय यथासिद्धमुपाहरत् ॥१४॥
14. tacchrutvā vacanaṃ rāmo harṣeṇa mahatānvitaḥ ,
bhojanaṃ munimukhyāya yathāsiddhamupāharat.
14. tat śrutvā vacanam rāmaḥ harṣeṇa mahatā anvitaḥ
bhojanam munimukhyāya yathāsiddham upāharat
14. tat vacanam śrutvā,
mahatā harṣeṇa anvitaḥ rāmaḥ munimukhyāya yathāsiddham bhojanam upāharat.
14. Having heard that statement, Rāma, filled with great joy, offered the readily available food to the eminent sage.
स तु भुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठस्तदन्नममृतोपमम् ।
साधु रामेति संभाष्य स्वमाश्रममुपागमत् ॥१५॥
15. sa tu bhuktvā muniśreṣṭhastadannamamṛtopamam ,
sādhu rāmeti saṃbhāṣya svamāśramamupāgamat.
15. saḥ tu bhuktvā muniśreṣṭhaḥ tat annam amṛtopamam
sādhu rāma iti sambhāṣya svam āśramam upāgamat
15. saḥ tu muniśreṣṭhaḥ amṛtopamam tat annam bhuktvā,
"sādhu rāma!" iti sambhāṣya,
svam āśramam upāgamat.
15. Having eaten that nectar-like food, that eminent sage (Durvāsas) addressed Rāma saying, "Well done, Rāma!" and then went to his own hermitage (āśrama).
तस्मिन् गते महातेजा राघवः प्रीतमानसः ।
संस्मृत्य कालवाक्यानि ततो दुःखमुपेयिवान् ॥१६॥
16. tasmin gate mahātejā rāghavaḥ prītamānasaḥ ,
saṃsmṛtya kālavākyāni tato duḥkhamupeyivān.
16. tasmin gate mahātejāḥ rāghavaḥ prītamānasaḥ
saṃsmṛtya kālavākyāni tataḥ duḥkham upeyivān
16. mahātejāḥ rāghavaḥ tasmin gate prītamānasaḥ
kālavākyāni saṃsmṛtya tataḥ duḥkham upeyivān
16. After he (Kāla) had departed, the greatly effulgent Rāghava, although initially with a pleased mind, remembered Kāla's words and then became filled with sorrow.
दुःखेन च सुसंतप्तः स्मृत्वा तद्घोरदर्शनम् ।
अवान्मुखो दीनमना व्याहर्तुं न शशाक ह ॥१७॥
17. duḥkhena ca susaṃtaptaḥ smṛtvā tadghoradarśanam ,
avānmukho dīnamanā vyāhartuṃ na śaśāka ha.
17. duḥkhena ca susaṃtaptaḥ smṛtvā tat ghoradarśanam
avāṅmukhaḥ dīnamanāḥ vyāhartum na śaśāka ha
17. duḥkhena ca susaṃtaptaḥ tat ghoradarśanam smṛtvā
avāṅmukhaḥ dīnamanāḥ vyāhartum na śaśāka ha
17. And, greatly tormented by sorrow, remembering that dreadful vision, he became downcast with a dejected mind and indeed could not speak.
ततो बुद्ध्या विनिश्चित्य कालवाक्यानि राघवः ।
नैतदस्तीति चोक्त्वा स तूष्णीमासीन्महायशाः ॥१८॥
18. tato buddhyā viniścitya kālavākyāni rāghavaḥ ,
naitadastīti coktvā sa tūṣṇīmāsīnmahāyaśāḥ.
18. tataḥ buddhyā viniścitya kālavākyāni rāghavaḥ na
etat asti iti ca uktvā sa tūṣṇīm āsīt mahāyaśāḥ
18. tataḥ mahāyaśāḥ rāghavaḥ buddhyā kālavākyāni
viniścitya etat na asti iti ca uktvā sa tūṣṇīm āsīt
18. Then, having reflected and understood Kāla's words with his intellect (buddhi), Rāghava, the greatly renowned one, said 'This is not right!' and fell silent.
