तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वानरस्य महात्मनः ।
आज्ञापयद्वधं तस्य रावणः क्रोधमूर्छितः ॥१॥
1. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā vānarasya mahātmanaḥ ,
ājñāpayadvadhaṃ tasya rāvaṇaḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ.

1. Having heard that speech of the great-souled monkey, Ravana, overcome with rage, commanded his execution.
वधे तस्य समाज्ञप्ते रावणेन दुरात्मना ।
निवेदितवतो दौत्यं नानुमेने विभीषणः ॥२॥
2. vadhe tasya samājñapte rāvaṇena durātmanā ,
niveditavato dautyaṃ nānumene vibhīṣaṇaḥ.

niveditavataḥ dautyam na anumene vibhīṣaṇaḥ
2. When the execution of him who had declared his diplomatic mission was commanded by the wicked Ravana, Vibhishana did not approve.
तं रक्षोऽधिपतिं क्रुद्धं तच्च कार्यमुपस्थितम् ।
विदित्वा चिन्तयामास कार्यं कार्यविधौ स्थितः ॥३॥
3. taṃ rakṣo'dhipatiṃ kruddhaṃ tacca kāryamupasthitam ,
viditvā cintayāmāsa kāryaṃ kāryavidhau sthitaḥ.
3. tam rakṣaḥadhipatim kruddham tat ca kāryam upasthitam
viditvā cintayāmāsa kāryam kāryavidhau sthitaḥ
3. Knowing that the lord of the rakṣasas was enraged and that the situation was imminent, (Vibhishana), who was skilled in the proper course of action, began to ponder what should be done.
निश्चितार्थस्ततः साम्नापूज्य शत्रुजिदग्रजम् ।
उवाच हितमत्यर्थं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥४॥
4. niścitārthastataḥ sāmnāpūjya śatrujidagrajam ,
uvāca hitamatyarthaṃ vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ.
4. niścitārthaḥ tataḥ sāmnā apūjya śatrujit agrajam
uvāca hitam atyartham vākyam vākyaviśāradaḥ
4. tataḥ niścitārthaḥ vākyaviśāradaḥ sāmnā śatrujit
agrajam apūjya atyartham hitam vākyam uvāca
4. Having ascertained the right course, the expert in speech then respectfully addressed his elder brother, the conqueror of enemies (Ravana), with gentle words, and spoke counsel that was exceedingly beneficial.
राजन्धर्मविरुद्धं च लोकवृत्तेश्च गर्हितम् ।
तव चासदृशं वीर कपेरस्य प्रमापणम् ॥५॥
5. rājandharmaviruddhaṃ ca lokavṛtteśca garhitam ,
tava cāsadṛśaṃ vīra kaperasya pramāpaṇam.
5. rājan dharma viruddham ca lokavṛtteḥ ca garhitam
tava ca asadṛśam vīra kapeḥ asya pramāpaṇam
5. rājan vīra asya kapeḥ pramāpaṇam dharma viruddham
ca lokavṛtteḥ ca garhitam tava ca asadṛśam (asti)
5. O King, the killing of this monkey is contrary to the natural law (dharma), censured by the ways of the world, and unworthy of you, O hero.
असंशयं शत्रुरयं प्रवृद्धः कृतं ह्यनेनाप्रियमप्रमेयम् ।
न दूतवध्यां प्रवदन्ति सन्तो दूतस्य दृष्टा बहवो हि दण्डाः ॥६॥
6. asaṃśayaṃ śatrurayaṃ pravṛddhaḥ kṛtaṃ hyanenāpriyamaprameyam ,
na dūtavadhyāṃ pravadanti santo dūtasya dṛṣṭā bahavo hi daṇḍāḥ.
6. asaṃśayam śatruḥ ayam pravṛddhaḥ
kṛtam hi anena apriyam aprameyam
na dūtavadhyām pravadanti santaḥ
dūtasya dṛṣṭā bahavaḥ hi daṇḍāḥ
6. asaṃśayam ayam śatruḥ pravṛddhaḥ (asti).
hi anena aprameyam apriyam kṛtam (asti).
tu santaḥ dūtavadhyām na pravadanti.
hi dūtasya bahavaḥ daṇḍāḥ dṛṣṭāḥ (santi).
6. Undoubtedly, this enemy has grown powerful, and indeed, immense harm has been done by him. However, righteous individuals do not advocate the killing of a messenger, for many forms of punishment for a messenger are indeed established.
वैरूप्यामङ्गेषु कशाभिघातो मौण्ड्यं तथा लक्ष्मणसंनिपातः ।
एतान् हि दूते प्रवदन्ति दण्डान् वधस्तु दूतस्य न नः श्रुतो ऽपि ॥७॥
7. vairūpyāmaṅgeṣu kaśābhighāto mauṇḍyaṃ tathā lakṣmaṇasaṃnipātaḥ ,
etān hi dūte pravadanti daṇḍān vadhastu dūtasya na naḥ śruto'pi.
7. vairūpyam aṅgeṣu kaśābhighātaḥ
mauṇḍyam tathā lakṣmaṇa saṃnipātaḥ
etān hi dūte pravadanti daṇḍān
vadhaḥ tu dūtasya na naḥ śrutaḥ api
7. aṅgeṣu vairūpyam kaśābhighātaḥ mauṇḍyam tathā lakṣmaṇa saṃnipātaḥ hi etān dūte daṇḍān pravadanti.
tu dūtasya vadhaḥ na naḥ api śrutaḥ (asti).
7. Disfigurement of the limbs, flogging, shaving the head, and branding - these, indeed, are the punishments they prescribe for a messenger. But the killing of a messenger is something we have not even heard of.
कथं च धर्मार्थविनीतबुद्धिः परावरप्रत्ययनिश्चितार्थः ।
भवद्विधः कोपवशे हि तिष्ठेत् कोपं नियच्छन्ति हि सत्त्ववन्तः ॥८॥
8. kathaṃ ca dharmārthavinītabuddhiḥ parāvarapratyayaniścitārthaḥ ,
bhavadvidhaḥ kopavaśe hi tiṣṭhet kopaṃ niyacchanti hi sattvavantaḥ.
8. katham ca dharmārthavinītabuddhiḥ
parāvarapratyayaniścitārthaḥ
bhavadvidhaḥ kopavaśe hi tiṣṭhet
kopam niyacchanti hi sattvavantaḥ
8. How then could someone like you, whose intellect is disciplined by the principles of natural law (dharma) and proper aim, and who has a firm understanding of both superior and inferior truths, possibly remain under the sway of anger? Indeed, truly strong-willed individuals restrain their anger.
न धर्मवादे न च लोकवृत्ते न शास्त्रबुद्धिग्रहणेषु वापि ।
विद्येत कश्चित्तव वीरतुल्यस्त्वं ह्युत्तमः सर्वसुरासुराणाम् ॥९॥
9. na dharmavāde na ca lokavṛtte na śāstrabuddhigrahaṇeṣu vāpi ,
vidyeta kaścittava vīratulyastvaṃ hyuttamaḥ sarvasurāsurāṇām.
9. na dharmavāde na ca lokavṛtte na
śāstrabuddhigrahaṇeṣu vā api
vidyeta kaścit tava vīratulyaḥ
tvam hi uttamaḥ sarvasurāsurāṇām
9. O hero, no one can be found equal to you, neither in discourses on natural law (dharma), nor in worldly customs, nor in the understanding of scriptural wisdom. Indeed, you are the foremost among all gods and asuras.
न चाप्यस्य कपेर्घाते कं चित् पश्याम्यहं गुणम् ।
तेष्वयं पात्यतां दण्डो यैरयं प्रेषितः कपिः ॥१०॥
10. na cāpyasya kaperghāte kaṃ cit paśyāmyahaṃ guṇam ,
teṣvayaṃ pātyatāṃ daṇḍo yairayaṃ preṣitaḥ kapiḥ.
10. na ca api asya kapeḥ ghāte kam cit paśyāmi aham guṇam
teṣu ayam pātyatām daṇḍaḥ yaiḥ ayam preṣitaḥ kapiḥ
10. And I see no merit whatsoever in killing this monkey. Let the punishment be inflicted upon those by whom this monkey was dispatched.
साधुर्वा यदि वासाधुर् परैरेष समर्पितः ।
ब्रुवन्परार्थं परवान्न दूतो वधमर्हति ॥११॥
11. sādhurvā yadi vāsādhur paraireṣa samarpitaḥ ,
bruvanparārthaṃ paravānna dūto vadhamarhati.
11. sādhuḥ vā yadi vā asādhuḥ paraiḥ eṣa samarpitaḥ
bruvan parārtham paravān na dūtaḥ vadham arhati
11. Whether he is virtuous or unvirtuous, he has been dispatched by others. A messenger who speaks for another's purpose and is dependent on another does not deserve execution.
अपि चास्मिन् हते राजन्नान्यं पश्यामि खेचरम् ।
इह यः पुनरागच्छेत् परं पारं महोदधिः ॥१२॥
12. api cāsmin hate rājannānyaṃ paśyāmi khecaram ,
iha yaḥ punarāgacchet paraṃ pāraṃ mahodadhiḥ.
12. api ca asmin hate rājan na anyam paśyāmi khecaram
| iha yaḥ punaḥ āgacchet param pāram mahā-udadhiḥ
12. rājan api ca asmin hate,
iha yaḥ punaḥ param pāram mahā-udadhiḥ āgacchet,
anyam khecaram na paśyāmi.
12. Moreover, O King, if this aerial being is slain, I do not see any other flying creature here who could again reach the other shore of the vast ocean.
तस्मान्नास्य वधे यत्नः कार्यः परपुरंजय ।
भवान् सेन्द्रेषु देवेषु यत्नमास्थातुमर्हति ॥१३॥
13. tasmānnāsya vadhe yatnaḥ kāryaḥ parapuraṃjaya ,
bhavān sendreṣu deveṣu yatnamāsthātumarhati.
13. tasmāt na asya vadhe yatnaḥ kāryaḥ parapurajaya
| bhavān sa-indreṣu deveṣu yatnam āsthātum arhati
13. parapurajaya,
tasmāt asya vadhe yatnaḥ na kāryaḥ.
bhavān sa-indreṣu deveṣu yatnam āsthātum arhati.
13. Therefore, O conqueror of enemy cities, an effort should not be made to kill him. You should rather direct your effort towards the gods, including Indra.
अस्मिन् विनष्टे न हि दूतमन्यं पश्यामि यस्तौ नरराजपुत्रौ ।
युद्धाय युद्धप्रियदुर्विनीताव् उद्योजयेद्दीर्घपथावरुद्धौ ॥१४॥
14. asmin vinaṣṭe na hi dūtamanyaṃ paśyāmi yastau nararājaputrau ,
yuddhāya yuddhapriyadurvinītāv udyojayeddīrghapathāvaruddhau.
14. asmin vinaṣṭe na hi dūtam anyam
paśyāmi yaḥ tau nararājaputrau |
yuddhāya yuddhapriya-durvinītau
udyojayet dīrghapatha-avaruddhau
14. asmin vinaṣṭe,
hi na paśyāmi anyam dūtam yaḥ tau nararājaputrau,
yuddhapriya-durvinītau dīrghapatha-avaruddhau,
yuddhāya udyojayet.
14. If this one is destroyed, I certainly do not see another messenger who could engage those two princes, who love war and are ill-behaved, and are obstructed by the long journey, in battle.
पराक्रमोत्साहमनस्विनां च सुरासुराणामपि दुर्जयेन ।
त्वया मनोनन्दन नैरृतानां युद्धायतिर्नाशयितुं न युक्ता ॥१५॥
15. parākramotsāhamanasvināṃ ca surāsurāṇāmapi durjayena ,
tvayā manonandana nairṛtānāṃ yuddhāyatirnāśayituṃ na yuktā.
15. parākrama-utsāha-manasvinām ca
sura-asurāṇām api durjayena |
tvayā manonandana nairṛtānām
yuddhā-āyatiḥ nāśayitum na yuktā
15. manonandana ca parākrama-utsāha-manasvinām sura-asurāṇām api durjayena tvayā,
nairṛtānām yuddhā-āyatiḥ nāśayitum na yuktā.
15. And by you, O delight of the mind, who are unconquerable even by the gods and asuras who are full of valor, energy, and courage, it is not fitting to destroy the prospect of battle for the Rākṣasas.
हिताश्च शूराश्च समाहिताश्च कुलेषु जाताश्च महागुणेषु ।
मनस्विनः शस्त्रभृतां वरिष्ठाः कोट्यग्रशस्ते सुभृताश्च योधाः ॥१६॥
16. hitāśca śūrāśca samāhitāśca kuleṣu jātāśca mahāguṇeṣu ,
manasvinaḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ variṣṭhāḥ koṭyagraśaste subhṛtāśca yodhāḥ.
16. hitāḥ ca śūrāḥ ca samāhitāḥ ca
kuleṣu jātāḥ ca mahāguṇeṣu
manasvinaḥ śastrabṛtām variṣṭhāḥ
koṭyagraśaste subhṛtāḥ ca yodhāḥ
16. yodhāḥ hitāḥ ca śūrāḥ ca samāhitāḥ
ca kuleṣu jātāḥ ca mahāguṇeṣu
manasvinaḥ śastrabṛtām
variṣṭhāḥ koṭyagraśaste subhṛtāḥ ca
16. There are warriors who are benevolent, brave, and composed, born into noble families and possessing great qualities. They are high-minded, foremost among weapon-bearers, praised by millions, and well-sustained.
तदेकदेशेन बलस्य तावत् के चित्तवादेशकृतो ऽपयान्तु ।
तौ राजपुत्रौ विनिगृह्य मूढौ परेषु ते भावयितुं प्रभावम् ॥१७॥
17. tadekadeśena balasya tāvat ke cittavādeśakṛto'payāntu ,
tau rājaputrau vinigṛhya mūḍhau pareṣu te bhāvayituṃ prabhāvam.
17. tat ekadeśena balasya tāvat ke
cit tvat ādeśakṛtaḥ apayāntu
tau rājaputrau vinigṛhya mūḍhau
pareṣu te bhāvayitum prabhāvam
17. tāvat tat balasya ekadeśena ke cit tvat ādeśakṛtaḥ apayāntu,
(ca) tau mūḍhau rājaputrau vinigṛhya pareṣu te prabhāvam bhāvayitum
17. Therefore, let some of those who execute your commands depart with a portion of the army, for now, to firmly seize those two foolish princes and demonstrate your might against the enemies.
