वाली नाम मम भ्राता ज्येष्ठः शत्रुनिषूदनः ।
पितुर्बहुमतो नित्यं मम चापि तथा पुरा ॥१॥

1. Vālī, my elder brother, a vanquisher of foes, was always highly esteemed by our father, and likewise by me in former times.
पितर्युपरते ऽस्माकं ज्येष्ठो ऽयमिति मन्त्रिभिः ।
कपीनामीश्वरो राज्ये कृतः परमसंमतः ॥२॥
2. pitaryuparate'smākaṃ jyeṣṭho'yamiti mantribhiḥ ,
kapīnāmīśvaro rājye kṛtaḥ paramasaṃmataḥ.
2. pitari uparate asmākam jyeṣṭhaḥ ayam iti mantribhiḥ
| kapīnām īśvaraḥ rājye kṛtaḥ paramasaṃmataḥ

2. Upon the passing of our father, he (Vālī) was appointed ruler over the monkeys in the kingdom by the ministers, who considered him 'the eldest.' He was greatly approved by all.
राज्यं प्रशासतस्तस्य पितृपैतामहं महत् ।
अहं सर्वेषु कालेषु प्रणतः प्रेष्यवत् स्थितः ॥३॥
3. rājyaṃ praśāsatastasya pitṛpaitāmahaṃ mahat ,
ahaṃ sarveṣu kāleṣu praṇataḥ preṣyavat sthitaḥ.
3. rājyam praśāsataḥ tasya pitṛpaitāmaham mahat |
aham sarveṣu kāleṣu praṇataḥ preṣyavat sthitaḥ
3. tasya mahat pitṛpaitāmaham rājyam praśāsataḥ

3. While he governed that great ancestral kingdom, I remained at all times humble, like a servant.
मायावी नाम तेजस्वी पूर्वजो दुन्दुभेः सुतः ।
तेन तस्य महद्वैरं स्त्रीकृतं विश्रुतं पुरा ॥४॥
4. māyāvī nāma tejasvī pūrvajo dundubheḥ sutaḥ ,
tena tasya mahadvairaṃ strīkṛtaṃ viśrutaṃ purā.

tena tasya mahat vairam strīkṛtam viśrutam purā

4. Māyāvī, a powerful figure and the elder son of Dundubhi, had, in former times, a great and widely known enmity with Vālī, which originated from a woman.
स तु सुप्ते जने रात्रौ किष्किन्धाद्वारमागतः ।
नर्दति स्म सुसंरब्धो वालिनं चाह्वयद् रणे ॥५॥
5. sa tu supte jane rātrau kiṣkindhādvāramāgataḥ ,
nardati sma susaṃrabdho vālinaṃ cāhvayad raṇe.
5. saḥ tu supte jane rātrau kiṣkindhādvāram āgataḥ
nardati sma susaṃrabdhaḥ vālinam ca āhvayat raṇe
5. tu saḥ rātrau jane supte kiṣkindhādvāram āgataḥ

5. Indeed, he arrived at the gate of Kiṣkindhā at night when people were asleep. Greatly enraged, he roared loudly and challenged Vālin to battle.
प्रसुप्तस्तु मम भ्राता नर्दितं भैरवस्वनम् ।
श्रुत्वा न ममृषे वाली निष्पपात जवात्तदा ॥६॥
6. prasuptastu mama bhrātā narditaṃ bhairavasvanam ,
śrutvā na mamṛṣe vālī niṣpapāta javāttadā.
6. prasuptaḥ tu mama bhrātā narditam bhairavasvanam
śrutvā na mamṛṣe vālī niṣpapāta javāt tadā

6. But my brother (Vālin), who was fast asleep, heard the frightful roar. He could not tolerate it and immediately rushed out with great speed.
स तु वै निःसृतः क्रोधात्तं हन्तुमसुरोत्तमम् ।
वार्यमाणस्ततः स्त्रीभिर्मया च प्रणतात्मना ॥७॥
7. sa tu vai niḥsṛtaḥ krodhāttaṃ hantumasurottamam ,
vāryamāṇastataḥ strībhirmayā ca praṇatātmanā.
7. saḥ tu vai niḥsṛtaḥ krodhāt tam hantum asurottamam
vāryamāṇaḥ tataḥ strībhiḥ mayā ca praṇatātmanā
7. tu vai saḥ krodhāt tam asurottamam hantum niḥsṛtaḥ
tataḥ strībhiḥ ca praṇatātmanā mayā vāryamāṇaḥ
7. But he, indeed, driven by anger, went out to kill that foremost Asura (Dundubhi), even though he was being restrained by women and by me (Sugrīva), who was humble.
स तु निर्धूय सर्वान्नो निर्जगाम महाबलः ।
ततो ऽहमपि सौहार्दान्निःसृतो वालिना सह ॥८॥
8. sa tu nirdhūya sarvānno nirjagāma mahābalaḥ ,
tato'hamapi sauhārdānniḥsṛto vālinā saha.
8. saḥ tu nirdhūya sarvān naḥ nirjagāma mahābalaḥ
tataḥ aham api sauhārdāt niḥsṛtaḥ vālinā saha
8. tu saḥ mahābalaḥ sarvān naḥ nirdhūya nirjagāma
tataḥ aham api sauhārdāt vālinā saha niḥsṛtaḥ
8. But he, the mighty one, having shrugged off all of us, went out. Then I also, out of friendship, went out with Vālin.
स तु मे भ्रातरं दृष्ट्वा मां च दूरादवस्थितम् ।
असुरो जातसंत्रासः प्रदुद्राव तदा भृशम् ॥९॥
9. sa tu me bhrātaraṃ dṛṣṭvā māṃ ca dūrādavasthitam ,
asuro jātasaṃtrāsaḥ pradudrāva tadā bhṛśam.
9. saḥ tu me bhrātaram dṛṣṭvā mām ca dūrāt avasthitam
asuraḥ jāta-saṃtrāsaḥ pradudrāva tadā bhṛśam
9. saḥ asuraḥ tu me bhrātaram ca mām dūrāt avasthitam
dṛṣṭvā jāta-saṃtrāsaḥ tadā bhṛśam pradudrāva
9. But that demon, seeing my brother and me standing at a distance, became greatly terrified and then fled swiftly.
तस्मिन्द्रवति संत्रस्ते ह्यावां द्रुततरं गतौ ।
प्रकाशो ऽपि कृतो मार्गश्चन्द्रेणोद्गच्छता तदा ॥१०॥
10. tasmindravati saṃtraste hyāvāṃ drutataraṃ gatau ,
prakāśo'pi kṛto mārgaścandreṇodgacchatā tadā.
10. tasmin dravati saṃtraste hi āvām drutataraṃ gatau
prakāśaḥ api kṛtaḥ mārgaḥ candreṇa udgacchatā tadā
10. tasmin saṃtraste dravati hi āvām drutataraṃ gatau
tadā candreṇa udgacchatā api mārgaḥ prakāśaḥ kṛtaḥ
10. As he fled in terror, we two pursued him even more swiftly. At that time, the path was also illuminated by the rising moon.
स तृणैरावृतं दुर्गं धरण्या विवरं महत् ।
प्रविवेशासुरो वेगादावामासाद्य विष्ठितौ ॥११॥
11. sa tṛṇairāvṛtaṃ durgaṃ dharaṇyā vivaraṃ mahat ,
praviveśāsuro vegādāvāmāsādya viṣṭhitau.
11. saḥ tṛṇaiḥ āvṛtam durgam dharaṇyā vivaram mahat
praviveśa asuraḥ vegāt āvām āsādya viṣṭhitau
11. asuraḥ saḥ tṛṇaiḥ āvṛtam durgam mahat dharaṇyā
vivaram vegāt praviveśa āvām āsādya viṣṭhitau
11. He, the demon, swiftly entered a large, grass-covered, inaccessible cavern in the earth, just as we two approached and stood (at its entrance).
तं प्रविष्टं रिपुं दृष्ट्वा बिलं रोषवशं गतः ।
मामुवाच तदा वाली वचनं क्षुभितेन्द्रियः ॥१२॥
12. taṃ praviṣṭaṃ ripuṃ dṛṣṭvā bilaṃ roṣavaśaṃ gataḥ ,
māmuvāca tadā vālī vacanaṃ kṣubhitendriyaḥ.
12. tam praviṣṭam ripum dṛṣṭvā bilam roṣavaśam gataḥ
mām uvāca tadā vālī vacanam kṣubhita-indriyaḥ
12. bilam praviṣṭam tam ripum dṛṣṭvā kṣubhita-indriyaḥ
vālī roṣavaśam gataḥ tadā mām vacanam uvāca
12. Seeing that enemy enter the hole, Vali became overcome with rage, his senses greatly agitated, and then he spoke these words to me.
इह त्वं तिष्ठ सुग्रीव बिलद्वारि समाहितः ।
यावदत्र प्रविश्याहं निहन्मि समरे रिपुम् ॥१३॥
13. iha tvaṃ tiṣṭha sugrīva biladvāri samāhitaḥ ,
yāvadatra praviśyāhaṃ nihanmi samare ripum.
13. iha tvam tiṣṭha sugrīva biladvāri samāhitaḥ
yāvat atra praviśya aham nihanmi samare ripum
13. sugrīva tvam iha biladvāri samāhitaḥ tiṣṭha
yāvat aham atra praviśya samare ripum nihanmi
13. Sugriva, you remain here at the cave entrance, attentive. As long as I enter and kill the enemy in battle.
मया त्वेतद्वचः श्रुत्वा याचितः स परंतप ।
शापयित्वा च मां पद्भ्यां प्रविवेश बिलं तदा ॥१४॥
14. mayā tvetadvacaḥ śrutvā yācitaḥ sa paraṃtapa ,
śāpayitvā ca māṃ padbhyāṃ praviveśa bilaṃ tadā.
14. mayā tu etat vacaḥ śrutvā yācitaḥ saḥ paraṃtapa
śāpayitvā ca mām padbhyām praviveśa bilam tadā
14. paraṃtapa tu mayā etat vacaḥ śrutvā saḥ yācitaḥ
ca padbhyām mām śāpayitvā tadā bilam praviveśa
14. But after I (Sugriva) heard these words (from Vali), he (Vali), O tormentor of foes, was implored by me. He then made me swear by his feet and entered the cave.
तस्य प्रविष्टस्य बिलं साग्रः संवत्सरो गतः ।
स्थितस्य च मम द्वारि स कालो व्यत्यवर्तत ॥१५॥
15. tasya praviṣṭasya bilaṃ sāgraḥ saṃvatsaro gataḥ ,
sthitasya ca mama dvāri sa kālo vyatyavartata.
15. tasya praviṣṭasya bilam sāgraḥ saṃvatsaraḥ gataḥ
sthitasya ca mama dvāri saḥ kālaḥ vyatyavartata
15. tasya bilam praviṣṭasya sāgraḥ saṃvatsaraḥ gataḥ
ca mama dvāri sthitasya saḥ kālaḥ vyatyavartata
15. A full year passed after he (Vali) entered the cave. And that much time elapsed while I remained at the entrance.
अहं तु नष्टं तं ज्ञात्वा स्नेहादागतसंभ्रमः ।
भ्रातरं न हि पश्यामि पापशङ्कि च मे मनः ॥१६॥
16. ahaṃ tu naṣṭaṃ taṃ jñātvā snehādāgatasaṃbhramaḥ ,
bhrātaraṃ na hi paśyāmi pāpaśaṅki ca me manaḥ.
16. aham tu naṣṭam tam jñātvā snehāt āgatasaṃbhramaḥ
bhrātaram na hi paśyāmi pāpaśaṅki ca me manaḥ
16. tu aham tam naṣṭam jñātvā snehāt āgatasaṃbhramaḥ
hi bhrātaram na paśyāmi ca me manaḥ pāpaśaṅki
16. But I, realizing him (Vali) to be lost, became agitated due to affection. I no longer saw my brother, and my mind was apprehensive of evil.
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य बिलात्तस्माद्विनिःसृतम् ।
सफेनं रुधिरं रक्तमहं दृष्ट्वा सुदुःखितः ॥१७॥
17. atha dīrghasya kālasya bilāttasmādviniḥsṛtam ,
saphenaṃ rudhiraṃ raktamahaṃ dṛṣṭvā suduḥkhitaḥ.
17. atha dīrghasya kālasya bilāt tasmāt viniḥsṛtam
saphenam rudhiram raktam aham dṛṣṭvā suduḥkhitaḥ
17. atha dīrghasya kālasya tasmāt bilāt saphenam
raktam rudhiram viniḥsṛtam aham dṛṣṭvā suduḥkhitaḥ
17. Then, after a long time, frothy, red blood emerged from that cave. Having seen it, I became greatly distressed.
नर्दतामसुराणां च ध्वनिर्मे श्रोत्रमागतः ।
निरस्तस्य च संग्रामे क्रोशतो निःस्वनो गुरोः ॥१८॥
18. nardatāmasurāṇāṃ ca dhvanirme śrotramāgataḥ ,
nirastasya ca saṃgrāme krośato niḥsvano guroḥ.
18. nardatām asurāṇām ca dhvaniḥ me śrotram āgataḥ
nirastasya ca saṅgrāme krośataḥ niḥsvanaḥ guroḥ
18. nardatām asurāṇām ca dhvaniḥ me śrotram āgataḥ
ca saṅgrāme nirastasya krośataḥ guroḥ niḥsvanaḥ
18. And the roar of the bellowing demons came to my ear, and (also) the crying sound of my elder brother (guru), who was defeated in battle.
अहं त्ववगतो बुद्ध्या चिह्नैस्तैर्भ्रातरं हतम् ।
पिधाय च बिलद्वारं शिलया गिरिमात्रया ।
शोकार्तश्चोदकं कृत्वा किष्किन्धामागतः सखे ॥१९॥
19. ahaṃ tvavagato buddhyā cihnaistairbhrātaraṃ hatam ,
pidhāya ca biladvāraṃ śilayā girimātrayā ,
śokārtaścodakaṃ kṛtvā kiṣkindhāmāgataḥ sakhe.
19. aham tu avagataḥ buddhyā cihnaiḥ taiḥ
bhrātaram hatam pidhāya ca biladvāram
śilayā girimātrayā śokārtaḥ ca
udakam kṛtvā kiṣkindhām āgataḥ sakhe
19. sakhe aham tu taiḥ cihnaiḥ buddhyā
bhrātaram hatam avagataḥ ca girimātrayā
śilayā biladvāram pidhāya ca
śokārtaḥ udakam kṛtvā kiṣkindhām āgataḥ
19. But, my friend, by those signs, I understood intellectually that my brother was killed. And, having covered the cave entrance with a mountain-sized rock, and overwhelmed with sorrow, I performed the water oblation and came to Kishkindha.
गूहमानस्य मे तत्त्वं यत्नतो मन्त्रिभिः श्रुतम् ।
ततो ऽहं तैः समागम्य समेतैरभिषेचितः ॥२०॥
20. gūhamānasya me tattvaṃ yatnato mantribhiḥ śrutam ,
tato'haṃ taiḥ samāgamya sametairabhiṣecitaḥ.
20. gūhamānasya me tattvam yatnataḥ mantribhiḥ śrutam
tataḥ aham taiḥ samāgamya sametaiḥ abhiṣecitaḥ
20. me gūhamānasya api mantribhiḥ yatnataḥ tattvam śrutam
tataḥ aham taiḥ sametaiḥ samāgamya abhiṣecitaḥ
20. While I was trying to conceal it, the truth was carefully heard by the ministers. Thereafter, having met with those assembled ministers, I was consecrated (as king).
राज्यं प्रशासतस्तस्य न्यायतो मम राघव ।
आजगाम रिपुं हत्वा वाली तमसुरोत्तमम् ॥२१॥
21. rājyaṃ praśāsatastasya nyāyato mama rāghava ,
ājagāma ripuṃ hatvā vālī tamasurottamam.
21. rājyam praśāsataḥ tasya nyāyataḥ mama rāghava
ājagāma ripum hatvā vālī tam asurottamam
21. rāghava mama tasya rājyam nyāyataḥ praśāsataḥ
ripum tam asurottamam hatvā vālī ājagāma
21. O Rāghava, while I was justly ruling his kingdom, Vāli returned, having slain that formidable enemy, the best of asuras.
अभिषिक्तं तु मां दृष्ट्वा क्रोधात् संरक्तलोचनः ।
मदीयान्मन्त्रिणो बद्ध्वा परुषं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२२॥
22. abhiṣiktaṃ tu māṃ dṛṣṭvā krodhāt saṃraktalocanaḥ ,
madīyānmantriṇo baddhvā paruṣaṃ vākyamabravīt.
22. abhiṣiktam tu mām dṛṣṭvā krodhāt saṃraktalocanaḥ
madīyān mantriṇaḥ baddhvā paruṣam vākyam abravīt
22. tu mām abhiṣiktam dṛṣṭvā krodhāt saṃraktalocanaḥ
madīyān mantriṇaḥ baddhvā paruṣam vākyam abravīt
22. But when he saw me, already consecrated, his eyes became bloodshot with rage, and having imprisoned my ministers, he uttered harsh words.
निग्रहे ऽपि समर्थस्य तं पापं प्रति राघव ।
न प्रावर्तत मे बुद्धिर्भ्रातृगौरवयन्त्रिता ॥२३॥
23. nigrahe'pi samarthasya taṃ pāpaṃ prati rāghava ,
na prāvartata me buddhirbhrātṛgauravayantritā.
23. nigrahe api samarthasya tam pāpam prati rāghava
na prāvartata me buddhiḥ bhrātṛgauravayantritā
23. rāghava api tam pāpam prati nigrahe samarthasya
me buddhiḥ bhrātṛgauravayantritā na prāvartata
23. O Rāghava, though I was capable of restraining that wrongdoer, my intellect (buddhi) did not engage in it, being constrained by my profound respect for my brother.
मानयंस्तं महात्मानं यथावच्चाभ्यवादयम् ।
उक्ताश्च नाशिषस्तेन संतुष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥२४॥
24. mānayaṃstaṃ mahātmānaṃ yathāvaccābhyavādayam ,
uktāśca nāśiṣastena saṃtuṣṭenāntarātmanā.
24. mānayan tam mahātmānam yathāvat ca abhyavādayam
uktāḥ ca naḥ āśiṣaḥ tena saṃtuṣṭena antarātmanā
24. tam mahātmānam mānayan ca yathāvat abhyavādayam
tena saṃtuṣṭena antarātmanā ca naḥ āśiṣaḥ uktāḥ
24. And honoring that noble-souled one, I respectfully saluted him. Then, with a contented inner self, he bestowed blessings upon us.
