1.
While such an excellent and amazing (Vedic ritual) [yajña] was in progress, Vālmīki, the foremost among the sages (muni), quickly arrived with his disciples.

Having seen the (Vedic ritual) [yajña], which was splendid and marvelous to behold, he constructed beautiful hermitages in a secluded area of the sages' (ṛṣi) enclosures.

3.
Delighted, he said to his two disciples, 'You two, go and, being fully attentive, sing the entire poem (kāvya) of Rāmāyaṇa with great joy.'

In the sacred hermitages of sages, in the residences of Brahmins, on the streets, on the royal highways, and in the palaces of kings.

5.
It should be sung especially there – at Rāma's palace gate, where (Vedic) rituals (karma) are performed, and indeed in front of the priests.

6.
And here are these various and delicious fruits, grown on the mountain peaks. Tasting them repeatedly, let (the epic) be sung.

7.
O dear sons, after consuming these fruits and delicious roots, you two will not experience fatigue. You will then depart from the city.

8.
If King Rama (rāma) calls upon the assembled sages to listen, then the recitation (geya) should commence.

9.
Twenty chapters (sarga) are indeed to be recited daily with great joy, according to the many standards (pramāṇa) indicated by me previously.

10.
Greed (lobha) should not be indulged, not even a little, out of desire for wealth. What is the use of wealth for those residing in an hermitage (āśrama) who subsist on fruits and roots?

11.
If that descendant of Kakutstha (kākutstha) asks you two, "Whose two sons are you?", then indeed say to the king (narādhipa), "We are the two disciples of Valmiki."

12.
Having tuned these very melodious strings, or having set the scale previously demonstrated, you two, free from weariness, should sing very sweetly.

13.
The song should be from the very beginning, and do not disrespect the king. For indeed, the father of all beings is a king by virtue of his natural law (dharma).

14.
Therefore, you two, with cheerful minds, tomorrow morning, with rapt attention, should sing a sweet song, accompanied by string and rhythm.

15.
Having thus instructed them repeatedly, the greatly renowned, exceedingly noble sage (muni) Valmiki, the son of Pracetas, then became silent.

16.
Having fixed that wonderful, auspicious speech, spoken by the sage, in their hearts, the two young princes, full of keen interest, happily spent the night, just as the two Aśvins are refined by the moral teachings (nīti) of Bhārgava.
