रामस्तु सहितो भ्रात्रा सीतया च परंतपः ।
सुतीक्ष्णस्याश्रमपदं जगाम सह तैर्द्विजैः ॥१॥

1. The tormentor of foes, Rama, accompanied by his brother and Sita, went to the hermitage (āśrama) of Sutikshna along with those Brahmins (dvija).
स गत्वा दूरमध्वानं नदीस्तीर्त्व बहूदकाः ।
ददर्श विपुलं शैलं महामेघमिवोन्नतम् ॥२॥
2. sa gatvā dūramadhvānaṃ nadīstīrtva bahūdakāḥ ,
dadarśa vipulaṃ śailaṃ mahāmeghamivonnatam.
2. sa gatvā dūraṃ adhvānaṃ nadīḥ tīrtvā bahūdakāḥ

2. Having traveled a great distance and crossed many rivers full of water, he saw a vast mountain, lofty like a great cloud.
ततस्तदिक्ष्वाकुवरौ सततं विविधैर्द्रुमैः ।
काननं तौ विविशतुः सीतया सह राघवौ ॥३॥
3. tatastadikṣvākuvarau satataṃ vividhairdrumaiḥ ,
kānanaṃ tau viviśatuḥ sītayā saha rāghavau.

3. Then, those two scions of Ikshvaku, the Raghus, accompanied by Sita, entered that forest, which was abundant with various trees.
प्रविष्टस्तु वनं घोरं बहुपुष्पफलद्रुमम् ।
ददर्शाश्रममेकान्ते चीरमालापरिष्कृतम् ॥४॥
4. praviṣṭastu vanaṃ ghoraṃ bahupuṣpaphaladrumam ,
dadarśāśramamekānte cīramālāpariṣkṛtam.
4. praviṣṭaḥ tu vanaṃ ghoraṃ bahupuṣpaphaladrumam
dadarśa āśramaṃ ekānte cīramālāpariṣkṛtam

4. Indeed, having entered the dense forest, which was abundant with many flower and fruit trees, he saw a hermitage (āśrama) in a solitary place, decorated with garlands of bark-garments.
तत्र तापसमासीनं मलपङ्कजटाधरम् ।
रामः सुतीक्ष्णं विधिवत्तपोवृद्धमभाषत ॥५॥
5. tatra tāpasamāsīnaṃ malapaṅkajaṭādharam ,
rāmaḥ sutīkṣṇaṃ vidhivattapovṛddhamabhāṣata.
5. tatra tāpasam āsīnam malapaṅkajaṭādharam
rāmaḥ sutīkṣṇam vidhivat tapovṛddham abhāṣata
5. rāmaḥ tatra malapaṅkajaṭādharam āsīnam

5. There, Rama properly addressed the ascetic Sutīkṣṇa, who was seated, bearing matted locks soiled with dirt, and who was advanced in asceticism (tapas).
रामो ऽहमस्मि भगवन्भवन्तं द्रष्टुमागतः ।
तन्माभिवद धर्मज्ञ महर्षे सत्यविक्रम ॥६॥
6. rāmo'hamasmi bhagavanbhavantaṃ draṣṭumāgataḥ ,
tanmābhivada dharmajña maharṣe satyavikrama.
6. rāmaḥ aham asmi bhagavan bhavantam draṣṭum āgataḥ
tat mā abhivada dharmajña maharṣe satyavikrama
6. bhagavan maharṣe dharmajña satyavikrama aham rāmaḥ
asmi bhavantam draṣṭum āgataḥ tat mā abhivada
6. "O venerable one, I am Rama. I have come to see you. Therefore, O great sage, knower of natural law (dharma) and one of true valor, please address me."
स निरीक्ष्य ततो वीरं रामं धर्मभृतां वरम् ।
समाश्लिष्य च बाहुभ्यामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. sa nirīkṣya tato vīraṃ rāmaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ varam ,
samāśliṣya ca bāhubhyāmidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
7. saḥ nirīkṣya tataḥ vīram rāmam dharmabhṛtām varam
samāśliṣya ca bāhubhyām idam vacanam abravīt
7. tataḥ saḥ rāmam vīram dharmabhṛtām varam nirīkṣya
ca bāhubhyām samāśliṣya idam vacanam abravīt
7. Then, having seen that hero Rama, the foremost among those who uphold natural law (dharma), and having embraced him with both arms, he (Sutīkṣṇa) spoke these words.
स्वागतं खलु ते वीर राम धर्मभृतां वर ।
आश्रमो ऽयं त्वयाक्रान्तः सनाथ इव साम्प्रतम् ॥८॥
8. svāgataṃ khalu te vīra rāma dharmabhṛtāṃ vara ,
āśramo'yaṃ tvayākrāntaḥ sanātha iva sāmpratam.
8. svāgatam khalu te vīra rāma dharmabhṛtām vara
āśramaḥ ayam tvayā ākrāntaḥ sanāthaḥ iva sāmpratam
8. vīra rāma dharmabhṛtām vara te khalu svāgatam ayam
āśramaḥ tvayā ākrāntaḥ sāmpratam sanāthaḥ iva
8. "Welcome indeed to you, O hero Rama, the foremost among those who uphold natural law (dharma)! This hermitage (āśrama), having been visited by you, now appears as if it has a protector."
प्रतीक्षमाणस्त्वामेव नारोहे ऽहं महायशः ।
देवलोकमितो वीर देहं त्यक्त्वा महीतले ॥९॥
9. pratīkṣamāṇastvāmeva nārohe'haṃ mahāyaśaḥ ,
devalokamito vīra dehaṃ tyaktvā mahītale.
9. pratīkṣamāṇaḥ tvām eva na ārohe aham mahāyaśaḥ
devalokam itaḥ vīra deham tyaktvā mahītale
9. mahāyaśaḥ vīra aham tvām eva pratīkṣamāṇaḥ
itaḥ mahītale deham tyaktvā devalokam na ārohe
9. O greatly glorious one (mahāyaśaḥ), O hero (vīra), I will not ascend to the celestial realm from here, even after abandoning my body on earth, for I am waiting only for you.
चित्रकूटमुपादाय राज्यभ्रष्टो ऽसि मे श्रुतः ।
इहोपयातः काकुत्स्थो देवराजः शतक्रतुः ।
सर्वांल् लोकाञ्जितानाह मम पुण्येन कर्मणा ॥१०॥
10. citrakūṭamupādāya rājyabhraṣṭo'si me śrutaḥ ,
ihopayātaḥ kākutstho devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ ,
sarvāṃl lokāñjitānāha mama puṇyena karmaṇā.
10. citrakūṭam upādāya rājyabhraṣṭaḥ
asi me śrutaḥ iha upayātaḥ kākutsthaḥ
devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ sarvān
lokān jitān āha mama puṇyena karmaṇā
10. kākutsthaḥ! citrakūṭam upādāya rājyabhraṣṭaḥ asi iti me śrutaḥ.
iha devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ upayātaḥ.
saḥ mama puṇyena karmaṇā jitān sarvān lokān āha.
10. Having settled at Citrakūṭa, you are known to me as one deprived of his kingdom. Here, O scion of Kakutstha, the king of gods (devarāja), Śatakratu (Indra), has arrived. He declared all worlds conquered through my meritorious action (karma).
तेषु देवर्षिजुष्टेषु जितेषु तपसा मया ।
मत्प्रसादात् सभार्यस्त्वं विहरस्व सलक्ष्मणः ॥११॥
11. teṣu devarṣijuṣṭeṣu jiteṣu tapasā mayā ,
matprasādāt sabhāryastvaṃ viharasva salakṣmaṇaḥ.
11. teṣu devarṣijuṣṭeṣu jiteṣu tapasā mayā
matprasādāt sabhāryaḥ tvam viharasva salakṣmaṇaḥ
11. matprasādāt tvam sabhāryaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ mayā tapasā jiteṣu devarṣijuṣṭeṣu teṣu viharasva.
11. By my grace, may you, accompanied by your wife and Lakṣmaṇa, enjoy yourself in those worlds which are frequented by gods and sages and were conquered by me through asceticism (tapas).
तमुग्रतपसं दीप्तं महर्षिं सत्यवादिनम् ।
प्रत्युवाचात्मवान् रामो ब्रह्माणमिव वासवः ॥१२॥
12. tamugratapasaṃ dīptaṃ maharṣiṃ satyavādinam ,
pratyuvācātmavān rāmo brahmāṇamiva vāsavaḥ.
12. tam ugratapasam dīptam maharṣim satyavādinam
prati uvāca ātmavān rāmaḥ brahmāṇam iva vāsavaḥ
12. ātmavān rāmaḥ ugratapasam dīptam satyavādinam tam maharṣim brahmāṇam iva vāsavaḥ prati uvāca.
12. Self-possessed (ātmavān) Rāma replied to that great sage (maharṣi) of fierce asceticism (tapas), who was radiant and spoke the truth, just as Vāsava (Indra) would reply to Brahmā (brahman).
अहमेवाहरिष्यामि स्वयं लोकान्महामुने ।
आवासं त्वहमिच्छामि प्रदिष्टमिह कानने ॥१३॥
13. ahamevāhariṣyāmi svayaṃ lokānmahāmune ,
āvāsaṃ tvahamicchāmi pradiṣṭamiha kānane.
13. aham eva āhariṣyāmi svayam lokān mahāmune
āvāsam tu aham icchāmi pradiṣṭam iha kānane
13. mahāmune aham eva svayam lokān āhariṣyāmi
tu aham pradiṣṭam āvāsam iha kānane icchāmi
13. O great sage, I myself will indeed take charge of the realms. However, I desire a dwelling designated for me here in this forest.
भवान् सर्वत्र कुशलः सर्वभूतहिते रतः ।
आख्यातः शरभङ्गेन गौतमेन महात्मना ॥१४॥
14. bhavān sarvatra kuśalaḥ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ ,
ākhyātaḥ śarabhaṅgena gautamena mahātmanā.
14. bhavān sarvatra kuśalaḥ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ
ākhyātaḥ śarabhaṅgena gautamena mahātmanā
14. bhavān sarvatra kuśalaḥ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ
śarabhaṅgena mahātmanā gautamena ākhyātaḥ
14. You are skillful in all matters and devoted to the welfare of all beings. You have been spoken of by Śarabhaṅga and by the great-souled Gautama.
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण महर्षिर्लोकविश्रुतः ।
अब्रवीन्मधुरं वाक्यं हर्षेण महताप्लुतः ॥१५॥
15. evamuktastu rāmeṇa maharṣirlokaviśrutaḥ ,
abravīnmadhuraṃ vākyaṃ harṣeṇa mahatāplutaḥ.
15. evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa maharṣiḥ lokaviśrutaḥ
abravīt madhuram vākyam harṣeṇa mahatā āplutaḥ
15. rāmeṇa evam uktaḥ tu lokaviśrutaḥ maharṣiḥ
mahatā harṣeṇa āplutaḥ madhuram vākyam abravīt
15. Thus addressed by Rama, the great sage, renowned throughout the world, overflowed with great joy and spoke sweet words.
अयमेवाश्रमो राम गुणवान् रम्यतामिह ।
ऋषिसंघानुचरितः सदा मूलफलैर्युतः ॥१६॥
16. ayamevāśramo rāma guṇavān ramyatāmiha ,
ṛṣisaṃghānucaritaḥ sadā mūlaphalairyutaḥ.
16. ayam eva āśramaḥ rāma guṇavān ramyatām iha
ṛṣisaṅghānucaritaḥ sadā mūlaphalaiḥ yutaḥ
16. rāma ayam eva guṇavān āśramaḥ iha ramyatām
ṛṣisaṅghānucaritaḥ sadā mūlaphalaiḥ yutaḥ
16. O Rama, this very hermitage (āśrama) is excellent; let it be enjoyed here. It is always frequented by communities of sages and rich with roots and fruits.
इममाश्रममागम्य मृगसंघा महायशाः ।
अटित्वा प्रतिगच्छन्ति लोभयित्वाकुतोभयाः ॥१७॥
17. imamāśramamāgamya mṛgasaṃghā mahāyaśāḥ ,
aṭitvā pratigacchanti lobhayitvākutobhayāḥ.
17. imam āśramam āgamya mṛgasaṃghāḥ mahāyaśāḥ
aṭitvā pratigacchanti lobhayitvā akutobhayāḥ
17. mahāyaśāḥ mṛgasaṃghāḥ imam āśramam āgamya
aṭitvā lobhayitvā akutobhayāḥ pratigacchanti
17. Having come to this hermitage, the glorious herds of deer roam about and then return, fearlessly luring (people).
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य महर्षेर्लक्ष्मणाग्रजः ।
उवाच वचनं धीरो विकृष्य सशरं धनुः ॥१८॥
18. tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya maharṣerlakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ,
uvāca vacanaṃ dhīro vikṛṣya saśaraṃ dhanuḥ.
18. tat śrutvā vacanam tasya maharṣeḥ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ
uvāca vacanam dhīraḥ vikṛṣya saśaram dhanuḥ
18. lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ dhīraḥ tasya maharṣeḥ tat vacanam
śrutvā saśaram dhanuḥ vikṛṣya vacanam uvāca
18. Having heard the words of that great sage, the steadfast elder brother of Lakshmana (Rama) spoke, drawing his bow with an arrow.
तानहं सुमहाभाग मृगसंघान् समागतान् ।
हन्यां निशितधारेण शरेणाशनिवर्चसा ॥१९॥
19. tānahaṃ sumahābhāga mṛgasaṃghān samāgatān ,
hanyāṃ niśitadhāreṇa śareṇāśanivarcasā.
19. tān aham sumahābhāga mṛgasaṃghān samāgatān
hanyām niśitadhāreṇa śareṇa aśanivarcasā
19. sumahābhāga! aham niśitadhāreṇa aśanivarcasā
śareṇa tān samāgatān mṛgasaṃghān hanyām
19. O greatly glorious one, I would kill those assembled herds of deer with a sharp-edged arrow, endowed with the force of a thunderbolt.
भवांस्तत्राभिषज्येत किं स्यात् कृच्छ्रतरं ततः ।
एतस्मिन्नाश्रमे वासं चिरं तु न समर्थये ॥२०॥
20. bhavāṃstatrābhiṣajyeta kiṃ syāt kṛcchrataraṃ tataḥ ,
etasminnāśrame vāsaṃ ciraṃ tu na samarthaye.
20. bhavān tatra abhiṣajyeta kim syāt kṛcchrataram
tataḥ etasmin āśrame vāsam ciram tu na samarthaye
20. tatra bhavān abhiṣajyeta (cet) tataḥ kṛcchrataram
kim syāt? tu etasmin āśrame ciram vāsam na samarthaye
20. If you were to suffer affliction there, what could be more grievous than that? Indeed, I cannot endure dwelling for long in this hermitage.
तमेवमुक्त्वा वरदं रामः संध्यामुपागमत् ।
अन्वास्य पश्चिमां संध्यां तत्र वासमकल्पयत् ॥२१॥
21. tamevamuktvā varadaṃ rāmaḥ saṃdhyāmupāgamat ,
anvāsya paścimāṃ saṃdhyāṃ tatra vāsamakalpayat.
21. tam evam uktvā varadam rāmaḥ sandhyām upāgamat
anvāsya paścimām sandhyām tatra vāsam akalpayat
21. rāmaḥ tam varadam evam uktvā sandhyām upāgamat
paścimām sandhyām anvāsya tatra vāsam akalpayat
21. Having thus spoken to that bestower of boons, Rama approached the evening prayers. After performing the western twilight rites, he settled down to stay there.
ततः शुभं तापसभोज्यमन्नं स्वयं सुतीक्ष्णः पुरुषर्षभाभ्याम् ।
ताभ्यां सुसत्कृत्य ददौ महात्मा संध्यानिवृत्तौ रजनीं समीक्ष्य ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ śubhaṃ tāpasabhojyamannaṃ svayaṃ sutīkṣṇaḥ puruṣarṣabhābhyām ,
tābhyāṃ susatkṛtya dadau mahātmā saṃdhyānivṛttau rajanīṃ samīkṣya.
22. tataḥ śubham tāpasabhojyam annam
svayam sutīkṣṇaḥ puruṣarṣabhābhyām
tābhyām susat kṛtya dadau mahātmā
sandhyānivṛttau rajanīm samīkṣya
22. tataḥ sandhyānivṛttau rajanīm
samīkṣya mahātmā sutīkṣṇaḥ svayam
tābhyām puruṣarṣabhābhyām śubham
tāpasabhojyam annam susat kṛtya dadau
22. Then, after the completion of the evening rites and observing the nightfall, the great-souled (mahātmā) Sutikṣṇa himself, having shown great respect to those two best of men (puruṣarṣabha), offered them auspicious food suitable for ascetics.
