अपृच्छत ततो रामो दक्षिणाशालयं मुनिम् ।

Then Rama, with folded hands and full of humility, addressed the sage residing in the southern region, speaking these meaningful words.
अतुलं बलमेताभ्यां वालिनो रावणस्य च ।
न त्वेतौ हनुमद्वीर्यैः समाविति मतिर्मम ॥२॥

2. atulaṃ balametābhyāṃ vālino rāvaṇasya ca ,

The strength of Valin and Ravana is indeed incomparable. However, these two are not equal to the prowess of Hanuman; this is my opinion.
शौर्यं दाक्ष्यं बलं धैर्यं प्राज्ञता नयसाधनम् ।
विक्रमश्च प्रभावश्च हनूमति कृतालयाः ॥३॥

Heroism, skill, strength, fortitude, wisdom, strategic capability, prowess, and influence have all made their abode in Hanuman.
दृष्ट्वोदधिं विषीदन्तीं तदैष कपिवाहिनीम् ।
समाश्वास्य कपीन्भूयो योजनानां शतं प्लुतः ॥४॥

Having seen the ocean, he then comforted the despondent monkey army, and subsequently leaped a hundred yojanas (a measure of distance).
धर्षयित्वा पुरीं लङ्कां रावणान्तःपुरं तथा ।
दृष्ट्वा संभाषिता चापि सीता विश्वासिता तथा ॥५॥

Hanumān, having stormed the city of Laṅkā and also Rāvaṇa's inner palace, then saw Sītā, conversed with her, and thereby reassured her.
सेनाग्रगा मन्त्रिसुताः किंकरा रावणात्मजः ।
एते हनुमता तत्र एकेन विनिपातिताः ॥६॥

6. senāgragā mantrisutāḥ kiṃkarā rāvaṇātmajaḥ ,

The commanders of the army, the ministers' sons, attendants, and Rāvaṇa's son - these were all killed there by Hanumān, single-handedly.
भूयो बन्धाद्विमुक्तेन संभाषित्वा दशाननम् ।
लङ्का भस्मीकृता तेन पावकेनेव मेदिनी ॥७॥

After being freed from captivity again, he (Hanumān), having conversed with the ten-headed Rāvaṇa, then reduced Laṅkā to ashes, just as the earth might be incinerated by a raging fire.
न कालस्य न शक्रस्य न विष्णोर्वित्तपस्य च ।
कर्माणि तानि श्रूयन्ते यानि युद्धे हनूमतः ॥८॥

8. na kālasya na śakrasya na viṣṇorvittapasya ca ,

Such deeds (karma), as were performed by Hanumān in battle, are not heard of (even) from Kāla (Time/Death), nor from Śakra (Indra), nor from Viṣṇu, nor from the lord of wealth (Kubera).
एतस्य बाहुवीर्येण लङ्का सीता च लक्ष्मणः ।
प्राप्तो मया जयश्चैव राज्यं मित्राणि बान्धवाः ॥९॥

Through the might of his arms, I regained Lanka, Sita, and Lakshmana, and also achieved victory, the kingdom, friends, and relatives.
हनूमान्यदि मे न स्याद्वानराधिपतेः सखा ।
प्रवृत्तमपि को वेत्तुं जानक्याः शक्तिमान्भवेत् ॥१०॥

10. hanūmānyadi me na syādvānarādhipateḥ sakhā ,
pravṛttamapi ko vettuṃ jānakyāḥ śaktimānbhavet.

If Hanumān, the friend of the lord of monkeys (Sugrīva), had not been available to me, who would have been capable of finding any news of Janakī (Sītā)?
किमर्थं वाली चैतेन सुग्रीवप्रियकाम्यया ।
तदा वैरे समुत्पन्ने न दग्धो वीरुधो यथा ॥११॥

11. kimarthaṃ vālī caitena sugrīvapriyakāmyayā ,

For what reason was Vālī not destroyed by him (Rāma) like a mere plant, when that conflict had arisen, out of a desire to please Sugrīva?
न हि वेदितवान्मन्ये हनूमानात्मनो बलम् ।
यद्दृष्टवाञ्जीवितेष्टं क्लिश्यन्तं वानराधिपम् ॥१२॥

12. na hi veditavānmanye hanūmānātmano balam ,

I think Hanumān certainly did not know the strength of his own self (ātman), since he saw the king of monkeys (Sugrīva), who was dearer than life, suffering.
एतन्मे भगवन् सर्वं हनूमति महामुने ।

O revered one, O great sage, O you who are honored by the immortals, please explain all this about Hanumān to me in detail and according to the true nature of things.
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा हेतुयुक्तमृषिस्ततः ।
हनूमतः समक्षं तमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१४॥

14. rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā hetuyuktamṛṣistataḥ ,

Having heard Rāghava's well-reasoned words, the sage then spoke these words to him in the presence of Hanumān.
सत्यमेतद् रघुश्रेष्ठ यद्ब्रवीषि हनूमतः ।
न बले विद्यते तुल्यो न गतौ न मतौ परः ॥१५॥
न बले विद्यते तुल्यो न गतौ न मतौ परः ॥१५॥
15. satyametad raghuśreṣṭha yadbravīṣi hanūmataḥ ,
na bale vidyate tulyo na gatau na matau paraḥ.

O best of the Raghus, what you say about Hanumān is true. No one is found to be his equal in strength, nor in speed, nor is anyone superior in intelligence (mati).
अमोघशापैः शापस्तु दत्तो ऽस्य ऋषिभिः पुरा ।
न वेदिता बलं येन बली सन्नरिमर्दनः ॥१६॥

16. amoghaśāpaiḥ śāpastu datto'sya ṛṣibhiḥ purā ,
na veditā balaṃ yena balī sannarimardanaḥ.

Indeed, a curse was given to him long ago by sages whose curses are unfailing. By this curse, his strength was not known to him, even though he is mighty and a subduer of enemies.
बाल्ये ऽप्येतेन यत् कर्म कृतं राम महाबल ।
तन्न वर्णयितुं शक्यमतिबालतयास्य ते ॥१७॥

17. bālye'pyetena yat karma kṛtaṃ rāma mahābala ,

O mighty Rāma, whatever deeds were performed by him even in childhood, they cannot be fully described to you, owing to his extreme youth.
यदि वास्ति त्वभिप्रायस्तच्छ्रोतुं तव राघव ।
समाधाय मतिं राम निशामय वदाम्यहम् ॥१८॥

18. yadi vāsti tvabhiprāyastacchrotuṃ tava rāghava ,
samādhāya matiṃ rāma niśāmaya vadāmyaham.

But if you, O Rāghava, have a desire to hear that, then O Rāma, concentrate your mind and listen, I will tell (it).
सूर्यदत्तवरस्वर्णः सुमेरुर्नाम पर्वतः ।
यत्र राज्यं प्रशास्त्यस्य केषरी नाम वै पिता ॥१९॥

19. sūryadattavarasvarṇaḥ sumerurnāma parvataḥ ,
yatra rājyaṃ praśāstyasya keṣarī nāma vai pitā.

There is a mountain named Sumeru, adorned with gold granted as a boon by Sūrya (the sun deity). On it, his father, indeed named Keśarī, rules the kingdom.
तस्य भार्या बभूवेष्टा ह्यञ्जनेति परिश्रुता ।
जनयामास तस्यां वै वायुरात्मजमुत्तमम् ॥२०॥

20. tasya bhāryā babhūveṣṭā hyañjaneti pariśrutā ,

His beloved wife was Añjanā, indeed renowned (by that name). In her, Vāyu (the wind deity) begot an excellent son.

21. śāliśūkasamābhāsaṃ prāsūtemaṃ tadāñjanā ,

Then Anjanā gave birth to him, who resembled a grain of rice. She had gone out, roaming in the dense forest, desiring to gather fruits.
एष मातुर्वियोगाच्च क्षुधया च भृशार्दितः ।

This infant, greatly distressed by separation from his mother and by hunger, cried excessively, like a young lion.

Then he saw the rising sun, which resembled a cluster of hibiscus flowers. And out of a desire for fruit, he flew up towards the sun.
बालार्काभिमुखो बालो बालार्क इव मूर्तिमान् ।

The child, facing the rising sun, as if the rising sun itself were embodied, desiring to seize the rising sun, flew through the middle of the sky.

While this infant Hanuman was floating, a great astonishment arose among the gods, demons, and perfected beings (siddhas).

The wind god (Vāyu) follows his own son as he floats, protecting him from the sun's scorching heat, as Vāyu himself is cool, like a heap of frost.

This one (Hanuman) then traveled many thousands of yojanas through the sky, and due to his father's strength and his childlike innocence, he came near the sun.

Thinking 'this child is indeed innocent, and a purpose is connected with him here', the sun did not burn him.

On the very day that this one (Hanuman) sprang to seize the sun, on that very day Rāhu also desired to seize the sun.

And, O Rāma, Rāhu, the tormentor of the moon and sun, was encountered by this one (Hanuman) on the sun's chariot, and terrified, he departed from there.

The son of Siṃhikā (Rāhu), filled with anger, went to Indra's abode. Having frowned, he spoke to the god who was surrounded by divine attendants.

किमिदं तत्त्वया दत्तमन्यस्य बलवृत्रहन् ॥३४॥

O Vāsava (Indra), O slayer of Bala and Vṛtra, after you gave me the sun and moon to appease my hunger, what is this that you have given to another?

Today, at the time of the eclipse (parvakāla), I came intending to seize the sun. But then another (being), acting as Rāhu, having approached, suddenly seized the sun.

Having heard Rāhu's words, Vāsava (Indra), filled with agitation, left his seat and sprang up, carrying his golden garland.

Then, (there was an elephant) resembling a peak of Kailāsa, four-tusked, exuding ichor, magnificent, tall, and loudly sounding with golden bells.

Indra, having mounted the lord of elephants, and with Rāhu as his vanguard, went forth to where the sun was, along with Hanumat.

Then Rāhu, with great impetuosity, approached, leaving Indra behind. And he (Rāhu) was indeed seen by Hanumat as he rushed forward like a mountain peak.

Then, abandoning the sun and having thus seen Rāhu, he (Hanumat) again flew up into the sky to seize the son of Siṃhikā (Rāhu).

O Rama, Rahu, who retains only his head, upon seeing this monkey (Hanuman) running towards the sun, released the sun, turned back, and averted his face.

Simhika's son (Rahu), indeed hoping for Indra as a protector, repeatedly cried out 'Indra, Indra!' from great fear.

The voice of Rahu, who was crying out, was perceived even beforehand. Hearing this, Indra said, 'Do not fear! I myself will strike down this one (Hanuman).'

Then, seeing Airavata, Hanuman (Māruti) ran towards that king of elephants, thinking, 'This too is a great fruit!'

At that time, his form, as he was rushing with the intention of seizing Airāvata, became terrifying and radiant for a moment, like that of Indra and Agni.

But Śacīpati (Indra), though not exceedingly enraged, struck him, who was rushing thus, with his thunderbolt, which was released with great force from his hand.

Then, this one, struck by Indra's thunderbolt, fell onto the mountain. And as he was falling, his left jaw was broken.

But when that child fell, bewildered by the impact of the thunderbolt, the wind god (pavana) became enraged with Indra and at the misfortune of beings (prajā).

The Lord (prabhu), residing within creatures and encompassing their physical bodies, confined all beings, just as Indra (Vāsava) restricts the rains.

Due to the agitation of the wind, creatures everywhere became breathless. Their joints were being shattered, and they became rigid like wood.

The three worlds (trailokyam), devoid of ancestral offerings (niḥsvadham) and oblations (nirvaṣaṭkāram) to deities, inactive, and bereft of their intrinsic nature (dharma), appeared, due to the agitation of the wind, as if they were in hell.

Then, the creatures (prajāḥ), accompanied by gandharvas, devas, asuras, and humans, distressed by suffering and longing for happiness, rushed towards Prajāpati.

The gods, with folded hands and bellies resembling those of one suffering from ascites, said: "O Lord (bhagavan), O Lord of creatures, indeed, by you were the four kinds of beings created."

सो ऽस्मान्प्राणेश्वरो भूत्वा कस्मादेषो ऽद्य सत्तम ॥५४॥

This wind, the master of life, was given to us by you. Why does he, having become the lord of our life (prāṇa), today, O best among existents...

Why does he, causing us suffering, confine us like women in a harem? Therefore, O all-pervading Lord (vibhu), afflicted by the wind (vāyu), we have come to you for refuge.

Prajāpati, the lord of creatures, having heard this from his subjects, then spoke to them again, saying, 'this is the reason'.

प्रजाः शृणुध्वं तत् सर्वं श्रोतव्यं चात्मनः क्षमम् ॥५८॥

O subjects, listen to all of this that is to be heard and is beneficial for your own sake (ātman), the reason for which Vāyu became angry and obstructed you.

Today, his son was struck down by Indra, the lord of the immortals. Vāyu was angered by the king (Indra), having taken into account the words of Rāhu, for you.

The bodiless wind (vāyu) moves through bodies, sustaining them. For indeed, without the wind (vāyu), a body attains the state of dust.

वायुना संपरित्यक्तं न सुखं विन्दते जगत् ॥६१॥

Air (vāyu) is the vital breaths (prāṇāḥ); air is happiness; air is this entire universe. A world abandoned by air finds no happiness.

And indeed, the world, whose very life (āyus) has been abandoned by the vital force (vāyu) today, now stands breathless, like wooden walls.

मा विनाशं गमिष्याम अप्रसाद्यादितेः सुतम् ॥६३॥

Therefore, let us go to where Vayu (māruta), who indeed causes you pain, resides, lest we perish without propitiating the son of Aditi.

Then Prajapati, accompanied by the creatures, along with gods, gandharvas, serpents, and guhyakas, went to where Vayu (māruta) resides, carrying that son who had been struck by the lord of the gods.
ततो ऽर्कवैश्वानरकाञ्चनप्रभं सुतं तदोत्सङ्गगतं सदागतेः ।
चतुर्मुखो वीक्ष्य कृपामथाकरोत् सदेवसिद्धर्षिभुजंगराक्षसः ॥६५॥

Then, the four-faced Brahmā, accompanied by the gods, perfected beings (siddhas), sages (ṛṣis), serpent deities, and demons, seeing the son of Vāyu (the wind god) in his lap, a son who shone with the brilliance of the sun, fire, and gold, thereupon showed compassion.
