पूर्णे चतुर्दशे वर्षे पञ्चभ्यां लक्ष्मणाग्रजः ।
भरद्वाजाश्रमं प्राप्य ववन्दे नियतो मुनिम् ॥१॥

1. After the fourteenth year was complete, on the fifth (day), Lakshmana's elder brother (Rama), disciplined in his conduct, reached the hermitage (āśrama) of Bharadvaja and saluted the sage (muni).
सो ऽपृच्छदभिवाद्यैनं भरद्वाजं तपोधनम् ।
शृणोषि क चिद्भगवन् सुभिक्षानामयं पुरे ।
कच्चिच्च युक्तो भरतो जीवन्त्यपि च मातरः ॥२॥
2. so'pṛcchadabhivādyainaṃ bharadvājaṃ tapodhanam ,
śṛṇoṣi ka cidbhagavan subhikṣānāmayaṃ pure ,
kaccicca yukto bharato jīvantyapi ca mātaraḥ.
2. saḥ apṛcchat abhivādya enam bharadvājam
tapodhanam śṛṇoṣi kaccit bhagavan
subhikṣā anāmayam pure kaccit ca
yuktaḥ bharataḥ jīvanti api ca mātaraḥ

anāmayam (ca) śṛṇoṣi? ca kaccit
bharataḥ yuktaḥ? ca mātaraḥ api jīvanti?
2. Having respectfully greeted Bharadvaja, whose wealth was his ascetic practice (tapas), he (Rama) asked him: "O revered one (bhagavan), do you hear good tidings of plenty and well-being in the city? And I hope Bharata is governing justly, and that the mothers are still alive?"
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण भरद्वाजो महामुनिः ।
प्रत्युवाच रघुश्रेष्ठं स्मितपूर्वं प्रहृष्टवत् ॥३॥
3. evamuktastu rāmeṇa bharadvājo mahāmuniḥ ,
pratyuvāca raghuśreṣṭhaṃ smitapūrvaṃ prahṛṣṭavat.

3. The great sage (muni) Bharadvāja, thus addressed by Rāma, replied to the best of the Raghus with a smile and great delight.
पङ्कदिग्धस्तु भरतो जटिलस्त्वां प्रतीक्षते ।
पादुके ते पुरस्कृत्य सर्वं च कुशलं गृहे ॥४॥
4. paṅkadigdhastu bharato jaṭilastvāṃ pratīkṣate ,
pāduke te puraskṛtya sarvaṃ ca kuśalaṃ gṛhe.
4. paṅkadigdhaḥ tu bharataḥ jaṭilaḥ tvām pratīkṣate
pāduke te puraskr̥tya sarvam ca kuśalam gr̥he

4. Bharata, smeared with mud and bearing matted hair, awaits you, holding your sandals before him. And all is well at home.
त्वां पुरा चीरवसनं प्रविशन्तं महावनम् ।
स्त्रीतृतीयं च्युतं राज्याद्धर्मकामं च केवलम् ॥५॥
5. tvāṃ purā cīravasanaṃ praviśantaṃ mahāvanam ,
strītṛtīyaṃ cyutaṃ rājyāddharmakāmaṃ ca kevalam.

5. Bharadvāja recalled you (Rāma), who formerly, dressed in bark garments, entered the great forest, accompanied by a woman as the third companion, deprived of the kingdom, and solely dedicated to your intrinsic nature (dharma).
पदातिं त्यक्तसर्वस्वं पितुर्वचनकारिणम् ।
स्वर्गभोगैः परित्यक्तं स्वर्गच्युतमिवामरम् ॥६॥
6. padātiṃ tyaktasarvasvaṃ piturvacanakāriṇam ,
svargabhogaiḥ parityaktaṃ svargacyutamivāmaram.
6. padātim tyaktasarvasvam pituḥ vacanakāriṇam
svargabhogaiḥ parityaktam svargacyutam iva amaram
6. padātim tyaktasarvasvam pituḥ vacanakāriṇam

6. (He recalled) you, walking on foot, who had renounced all possessions, obedient to your father's command, and forsaken by heavenly enjoyments, like an immortal fallen from heaven.
दृष्ट्वा तु करुणा पूर्वं ममासीत् समितिंजय ।
कैकेयीवचने युक्तं वन्यमूलफलाशनम् ॥७॥
7. dṛṣṭvā tu karuṇā pūrvaṃ mamāsīt samitiṃjaya ,
kaikeyīvacane yuktaṃ vanyamūlaphalāśanam.

kaikeyīvacane yuktam vanyamūlaphalāśanam
7. samitiṃjaya pūrvam mama karuṇā āsīt (yadā tvaṃ)

7. O conqueror of battles, formerly I indeed felt great compassion when I saw you, bound by Kaikeyī's command, subsisting on wild roots and fruits in the forest.
साम्प्रतं सुसमृद्धार्थं समित्रगणबान्धवम् ।
समीक्ष्य विजितारिं त्वां मम प्रीतिरनुत्तमा ॥८॥
8. sāmprataṃ susamṛddhārthaṃ samitragaṇabāndhavam ,
samīkṣya vijitāriṃ tvāṃ mama prītiranuttamā.

samīkṣya vijitārim tvām mama prītiḥ anuttamā

8. Now, having seen you, Rama, prosperous and successful in your endeavors, accompanied by your friends and kinsmen, and having conquered all your enemies, my joy is indeed unsurpassed.
सर्वं च सुखदुःखं ते विदितं मम राघव ।
यत्त्वया विपुलं प्राप्तं जनस्थानवधादिकम् ॥९॥
9. sarvaṃ ca sukhaduḥkhaṃ te viditaṃ mama rāghava ,
yattvayā vipulaṃ prāptaṃ janasthānavadhādikam.
9. sarvam ca sukhaduḥkham te viditam mama rāghava
yat tvayā vipulam prāptam janasthānavadhādikam
9. rāghava te sarvam sukhaduḥkham mama viditam
yat tvayā janasthānavadhādikam vipulam prāptam
9. And all your joys and sorrows, O descendant of Raghu, are known to me, especially those extensive experiences you gained, such as the destruction in Janasthāna and similar events.
ब्राह्मणार्थे नियुक्तस्य रक्षतः सर्वतापसान् ।
मारीचदर्शनं चैव सीतोन्मथनमेव च ॥१०॥
10. brāhmaṇārthe niyuktasya rakṣataḥ sarvatāpasān ,
mārīcadarśanaṃ caiva sītonmathanameva ca.
10. brāhmaṇārthe niyuktasya rakṣataḥ sarvatāpasān
mārīcadarśanam ca eva sītonmathanam eva ca
10. brāhmaṇārthe niyuktasya sarvatāpasān rakṣataḥ (tava)
mārīcadarśanam ca eva sītonmathanam eva ca (viditam)
10. Both the appearance of Marīca and the abduction of Sītā occurred while you were engaged in protecting all the ascetics (tapasas) for the sake of the brahmins.
कबन्धदर्शनं चैव पम्पाभिगमनं तथा ।
सुग्रीवेण च ते सख्यं यच्च वाली हतस्त्वया ॥११॥
11. kabandhadarśanaṃ caiva pampābhigamanaṃ tathā ,
sugrīveṇa ca te sakhyaṃ yacca vālī hatastvayā.
11. kabandha-darśanam ca eva pampā-abhigamanam tathā
sugrīveṇa ca te sakhyam yat ca vālī hataḥ tvayā
11. kabandha-darśanam ca eva pampā-abhigamanam tathā
ca te sugrīveṇa sakhyam yat ca vālī tvayā hataḥ
11. And indeed, the sight of Kabandha, and similarly, the journey to Pampa. Then your friendship with Sugrīva, and how Vālī was slain by you.
मार्गणं चैव वैदेह्याः कर्म वातात्मजस्य च ।
विदितायां च वैदेह्यां नलसेतुर्यथा कृतः ।
यथा च दीपिता लङ्का प्रहृष्टैर्हरियूथपैः ॥१२॥
12. mārgaṇaṃ caiva vaidehyāḥ karma vātātmajasya ca ,
viditāyāṃ ca vaidehyāṃ nalaseturyathā kṛtaḥ ,
yathā ca dīpitā laṅkā prahṛṣṭairhariyūthapaiḥ.
12. mārgaṇam ca eva vaidehyāḥ karma
vātātmajasya ca viditāyām ca vaidehyām
nalasetuḥ yathā kṛtaḥ yathā ca dīpitā
laṅkā prahṛṣṭaiḥ hari-yūthapaiḥ
12. vaidehyāḥ mārgaṇam ca eva vātātmajasya
karma ca vaidehyām viditāyām ca
nalasetuḥ yathā kṛtaḥ laṅkā ca yathā
prahṛṣṭaiḥ hari-yūthapaiḥ dīpitā
12. And indeed, the search for Sītā (Vaidehī), and the actions of Hanumān (Vātātmaja). And how, after Sītā (Vaidehī) was found, Nala's bridge was constructed. And how Laṅkā was set ablaze by the delighted monkey commanders.
सपुत्रबान्धवामात्यः सबलः सह वाहनः ।
यथा च निहतः संख्ये रावणो देवकण्टकः ॥१३॥
13. saputrabāndhavāmātyaḥ sabalaḥ saha vāhanaḥ ,
yathā ca nihataḥ saṃkhye rāvaṇo devakaṇṭakaḥ.
13. sa-putra-bāndhava-amātyaḥ sa-balaḥ saha vāhanaḥ
yathā ca nihataḥ saṅkhye rāvaṇaḥ deva-kaṇṭakaḥ
13. yathā deva-kaṇṭakaḥ rāvaṇaḥ sa-putra-bāndhava-amātyaḥ
sa-balaḥ saha vāhanaḥ ca saṅkhye nihataḥ
13. How Rāvaṇa, that tormentor of the gods, was slain in battle along with his sons, relatives, ministers, army, and conveyances.
समागमश्च त्रिदशैर्यथादत्तश्च ते वरः ।
सर्वं ममैतद्विदितं तपसा धर्मवत्सल ॥१४॥
14. samāgamaśca tridaśairyathādattaśca te varaḥ ,
sarvaṃ mamaitadviditaṃ tapasā dharmavatsala.
14. samāgamaḥ ca tridaśaiḥ yathā dattaḥ ca te varaḥ
sarvam mama etat viditam tapasā dharma-vatsala
14. tridaśaiḥ samāgamaḥ ca yathā te varaḥ dattaḥ ca
dharma-vatsala etat sarvam mama tapasā viditam
14. And your meeting with the gods, and how a boon was granted to you. All this, O beloved of natural law (dharma), is known to me through my ascetic practice (tapas).
अहमप्यत्र ते दद्मि वरं शस्त्रभृतां वर ।
अर्घ्यं प्रतिगृहाणेदमयोध्यां श्वो गमिष्यसि ॥१५॥
15. ahamapyatra te dadmi varaṃ śastrabhṛtāṃ vara ,
arghyaṃ pratigṛhāṇedamayodhyāṃ śvo gamiṣyasi.
15. aham api atra te dadmi varam śastrabhṛtām vara
arghyam pratigṛhāṇa idam ayodhyām śvaḥ gamiṣyasi
15. śastrabhṛtām vara aham api atra te varam dadmi
idam arghyam pratigṛhāṇa śvaḥ ayodhyām gamiṣyasi
15. O best among weapon-bearers, I also grant you a boon here. Accept this offering, and tomorrow you will go to Ayodhya.
तस्य तच्छिरसा वाक्यं प्रतिगृह्य नृपात्मजः ।
बाढमित्येव संहृष्टः श्रीमान् वरमयाचत ॥१६॥
16. tasya tacchirasā vākyaṃ pratigṛhya nṛpātmajaḥ ,
bāḍhamityeva saṃhṛṣṭaḥ śrīmān varamayācata.
16. tasya tat śirasā vākyam pratigṛhya nṛpātmajaḥ
bāḍham iti eva saṃhṛṣṭaḥ śrīmān varam ayācata
16. śrīmān nṛpātmajaḥ tasya tat vākyam śirasā
pratigṛhya bāḍham iti eva saṃhṛṣṭaḥ varam ayācata
16. The glorious king's son, having reverentially accepted his words, was greatly delighted and then asked for a boon, saying, 'Indeed!'
अकालफलिनो वृक्षाः सर्वे चापि मधुस्रवाः ।
भवन्तु मार्गे भगवन्नयोध्यां प्रति गच्छतः ॥१७॥
17. akālaphalino vṛkṣāḥ sarve cāpi madhusravāḥ ,
bhavantu mārge bhagavannayodhyāṃ prati gacchataḥ.
17. akālaphālinaḥ vṛkṣāḥ sarve ca api madhusravāḥ
bhavantu mārge bhagavan ayodhyām prati gacchataḥ
17. bhagavan ayodhyām prati gacchataḥ mārge sarve
vṛkṣāḥ akālaphālinaḥ ca api madhusravāḥ bhavantu
17. O venerable one, as I go towards Ayodhya, let all the trees on my path bear fruit out of season and flow with sweet sap.
निष्फलाः फलिनश्चासन् विपुष्पाः पुष्पशालिनः ।
शुष्काः समग्रपत्रास्ते नगाश्चैव मधुस्रवाः ॥१८॥
18. niṣphalāḥ phalinaścāsan vipuṣpāḥ puṣpaśālinaḥ ,
śuṣkāḥ samagrapatrāste nagāścaiva madhusravāḥ.
18. niṣphalāḥ phālinaḥ ca āsan vipuṣpāḥ puṣpaśālinaḥ
śuṣkāḥ samagrapatrāḥ te nagāḥ ca eva madhusravāḥ
18. niṣphalāḥ phālinaḥ ca āsan vipuṣpāḥ puṣpaśālinaḥ
śuṣkāḥ samagrapatrāḥ te nagāḥ ca eva madhusravāḥ
18. The fruitless trees became fruitful, the flowerless ones became splendid with flowers. Even the dry trees became fully leafy and flowed with sweet sap.
