स तं वृक्षं समासाद्य संध्यामन्वास्य पश्चिमाम् ।
रामो रमयतां श्रेष्ठ इति होवाच लक्ष्मणम् ॥१॥
1. sa taṃ vṛkṣaṃ samāsādya saṃdhyāmanvāsya paścimām ,
rāmo ramayatāṃ śreṣṭha iti hovāca lakṣmaṇam.

1. Having approached that tree and performed the evening rites, Rama, the best among those who bring delight, spoke thus to Lakshmana.
अद्येयं प्रथमा रात्रिर्याता जनपदाद्बहिः ।
या सुमन्त्रेण रहिता तां नोत्कण्ठितुमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. adyeyaṃ prathamā rātriryātā janapadādbahiḥ ,
yā sumantreṇa rahitā tāṃ notkaṇṭhitumarhasi.
2. adya iyam prathamā rātriḥ yātā janapadāt bahiḥ
yā sumantreṇa rahitā tām na utkaṇṭhitum arhasi
2. adya iyam prathamā rātriḥ janapadāt bahiḥ yātā,
yā sumantreṇa rahitā (āsīt).
tām (rātrim prati) na utkaṇṭhitum arhasi.
2. This is the first night that has passed outside our homeland, a night that was without Sumantra. You ought not to feel anxious about it.
जागर्तव्यमतन्द्रिभ्यामद्य प्रभृति रात्रिषु ।
योगक्षेमो हि सीताया वर्तते लक्ष्मणावयोः ॥३॥
3. jāgartavyamatandribhyāmadya prabhṛti rātriṣu ,
yogakṣemo hi sītāyā vartate lakṣmaṇāvayoḥ.
3. jāgartavyam atandribhyām adya prabhṛti rātriṣu
yogakṣemaḥ hi sītāyāḥ vartate lakṣmaṇa āvayoḥ
3. lakṣmaṇa! adya prabhṛti rātriṣu atandribhyām (āvābhyām) jāgartavyam (asti).
hi,
sītāyāḥ yogakṣemaḥ āvayoḥ vartate.
3. O Lakshmana, from this day forth, we two must remain vigilant during the nights. For indeed, the safeguarding and well-being (yogakṣema) of Sita depend on us.
रात्रिं कथं चिदेवेमां सौमित्रे वर्तयामहे ।
उपावर्तामहे भूमावास्तीर्य स्वयमार्जितैः ॥४॥
4. rātriṃ kathaṃ cidevemāṃ saumitre vartayāmahe ,
upāvartāmahe bhūmāvāstīrya svayamārjitaiḥ.
4. rātrim katham cit eva imām saumitre vartayāmahe
upāvartāmahe bhūmau āstīrya svayam ārjitaiḥ

4. O Lakṣmaṇa, son of Sumitrā, somehow we must pass this night. We shall lie down on the ground, having spread what we ourselves have gathered.
स तु संविश्य मेदिन्यां महार्हशयनोचितः ।
इमाः सौमित्रये रामो व्याजहार कथाः शुभाः ॥५॥
5. sa tu saṃviśya medinyāṃ mahārhaśayanocitaḥ ,
imāḥ saumitraye rāmo vyājahāra kathāḥ śubhāḥ.
5. saḥ tu saṃviśya medinyām mahārhaśayanocitaḥ
imāḥ saumitraye rāmaḥ vyājahāra kathāḥ śubhāḥ
5. saḥ mahārhaśayanocitaḥ rāmaḥ tu medinyām
saṃviśya imāḥ śubhāḥ kathāḥ saumitraye vyājahāra
5. Having lain down on the earth, Rāma, though accustomed to costly beds, recounted these auspicious tales to Lakṣmaṇa, the son of Sumitrā.
ध्रुवमद्य महाराजो दुःखं स्वपिति लक्ष्मण ।
कृतकामा तु कैकेयी तुष्टा भवितुमर्हति ॥६॥
6. dhruvamadya mahārājo duḥkhaṃ svapiti lakṣmaṇa ,
kṛtakāmā tu kaikeyī tuṣṭā bhavitumarhati.
6. dhruvam adya mahārājaḥ duḥkham svapiti lakṣmaṇa
kṛtakāmā tu kaikeyī tuṣṭā bhavitum arhati
6. lakṣmaṇa adya mahārājaḥ dhruvam duḥkham svapiti
tu kṛtakāmā kaikeyī tuṣṭā bhavitum arhati
6. O Lakṣmaṇa, surely today the great king (Daśaratha) sleeps in misery. But Kaikeyī, her desires fulfilled, must be content.
सा हि देवी महाराजं कैकेयी राज्यकारणात् ।
अपि न च्यावयेत् प्राणान्दृष्ट्वा भरतमागतम् ॥७॥
7. sā hi devī mahārājaṃ kaikeyī rājyakāraṇāt ,
api na cyāvayet prāṇāndṛṣṭvā bharatamāgatam.
7. sā hi devī mahārājam kaikeyī rājyakāraṇāt
api na cyāvayet prāṇān dṛṣṭvā bharatam āgatam
7. hi sā devī kaikeyī rājyakāraṇāt mahārājam
dṛṣṭvā āgatam bharatam api prāṇān na cyāvayet
7. Indeed, may that Queen Kaikeyī, for the sake of the kingdom, not deprive the great king of his life, especially after seeing Bharata arrive.
अनाथश्चैव वृद्धश्च मया चैव विनाकृतः ।
किं करिष्यति कामात्मा कैकेय्या वशमागतः ॥८॥
8. anāthaścaiva vṛddhaśca mayā caiva vinākṛtaḥ ,
kiṃ kariṣyati kāmātmā kaikeyyā vaśamāgataḥ.
8. anāthaḥ ca eva vṛddhaḥ ca mayā ca eva vinākṛtaḥ
kim kariṣyati kāmātmā kaikeyyāḥ vaśam āgataḥ
8. vṛddhaḥ ca anāthaḥ ca eva mayā ca eva vinākṛtaḥ
kāmātmā kaikeyyāḥ vaśam āgataḥ kim kariṣyati
8. Indeed, old and helpless, and moreover deprived of my presence, what will he, whose mind is swayed by desire (kāmātmā), do now that he has fallen under Kaikeyī's control?
इदं व्यसनमालोक्य राज्ञश्च मतिविभ्रमम् ।
काम एवार्धधर्माभ्यां गरीयानिति मे मतिः ॥९॥
9. idaṃ vyasanamālokya rājñaśca mativibhramam ,
kāma evārdhadharmābhyāṃ garīyāniti me matiḥ.
9. idam vyasanam ālokya rājñaḥ ca mativibhramam
kāmaḥ eva artha-dharmābhyām garīyān iti me matiḥ
9. idam vyasanam ca rājñaḥ mativibhramam ālokya,
artha-dharmābhyām kāmaḥ eva garīyān iti me matiḥ
9. Witnessing this calamity and the king's (rājan) delusion, it is my conviction (mati) that desire (kāma) alone is weightier than both material prosperity (artha) and intrinsic nature (dharma).
को ह्यविद्वानपि पुमान्प्रमदायाः कृते त्यजेत् ।
छन्दानुवर्तिनं पुत्रं तातो मामिव लक्ष्मण ॥१०॥
10. ko hyavidvānapi pumānpramadāyāḥ kṛte tyajet ,
chandānuvartinaṃ putraṃ tāto māmiva lakṣmaṇa.
10. kaḥ hi avidvān api pumān pramadāyāḥ kṛte tyajet
chandānuvartinam putram tātaḥ mām iva lakṣmaṇa
10. lakṣmaṇa,
kaḥ hi avidvān api pumān pramadāyāḥ kṛte chandānuvartinam putram mām iva tātaḥ tyajet
10. O Lakṣmaṇa! What man (puruṣa), even an ignorant one, would abandon an obedient son for the sake of a woman, just as father abandoned me?
सुखी बत सभार्यश्च भरतः केकयीसुतः ।
मुदितान् कोसलानेको यो भोक्ष्यत्यधिराजवत् ॥११॥
11. sukhī bata sabhāryaśca bharataḥ kekayīsutaḥ ,
muditān kosalāneko yo bhokṣyatyadhirājavat.
11. sukhī bata sabhāryaḥ ca bharataḥ kaikeyī-sutaḥ
muditān kosalān ekaḥ yaḥ bhokṣyati adhirājavat
11. bata,
sabhāryaḥ ca kaikeyī-sutaḥ bharataḥ sukhī,
yaḥ ekaḥ muditān kosalān adhirājavat bhokṣyati
11. Oh, how fortunate (sukhī) is Bharata, the son of Kaikeyī, along with his wife! He who alone will rule over the prosperous Kosalas like a supreme monarch.
स हि सर्वस्य राज्यस्य मुखमेकं भविष्यति ।
ताते च वयसातीते मयि चारण्यमाश्रिते ॥१२॥
12. sa hi sarvasya rājyasya mukhamekaṃ bhaviṣyati ,
tāte ca vayasātīte mayi cāraṇyamāśrite.
12. saḥ hi sarvasya rājyasya mukham ekam bhaviṣyati
tāte ca vayasā atīte mayi ca araṇyam āśrite
12. saḥ hi ekam mukham sarvasya rājyasya bhaviṣyati
ca tāte vayasā atīte ca mayi araṇyam āśrite
12. He will indeed be the sole leader of the entire kingdom, when father is advanced in age and I have taken refuge in the forest.
अर्थधर्मौ परित्यज्य यः काममनुवर्तते ।
एवमापद्यते क्षिप्रं राजा दशरथो यथा ॥१३॥
13. arthadharmau parityajya yaḥ kāmamanuvartate ,
evamāpadyate kṣipraṃ rājā daśaratho yathā.
13. arthadharmau parityajya yaḥ kāmam anuvartate
evam āpadyate kṣipram rājā daśarathaḥ yathā
13. yaḥ arthadharmau parityajya kāmam anuvartate
evam kṣipram āpadyate yathā rājā daśarathaḥ
13. Whoever, abandoning material prosperity (artha) and intrinsic nature (dharma), pursues desire (kāma), quickly meets such a fate, just like King Dasharatha.
मन्ये दशरथान्ताय मम प्रव्राजनाय च ।
कैकेयी सौम्य संप्राप्ता राज्याय भरतस्य च ॥१४॥
14. manye daśarathāntāya mama pravrājanāya ca ,
kaikeyī saumya saṃprāptā rājyāya bharatasya ca.
14. manye daśarathāntāya mama pravrājanāya ca
kaikeyī saumya saṃprāptā rājyāya bharatasya ca
14. saumya manye kaikeyī daśarathāntāya ca mama
pravrājanāya ca bharatasya rājyāya saṃprāptā
14. O gentle one, I believe Kaikeyi has appeared for the demise of Dasharatha, for my exile, and for Bharata's kingship.
अपीदानीं न कैकेयी सौभाग्यमदमोहिता ।
कौसल्यां च सुमित्रां च संप्रबाधेत मत्कृते ॥१५॥
15. apīdānīṃ na kaikeyī saubhāgyamadamohitā ,
kausalyāṃ ca sumitrāṃ ca saṃprabādheta matkṛte.
15. api idānīm na kaikeyī saubhāgyamadamohitā
kausalyām ca sumitrām ca saṃprabādheta matkṛte
15. api idānīm saubhāgyamadamohitā kaikeyī na
matkṛte kausalyām ca sumitrām ca saṃprabādheta
15. Will Kaikeyi, now infatuated by the arrogance of her good fortune, not oppress Kausalya and Sumitra for my sake?
मा स्म मत्कारणाद्देवी सुमित्रा दुःखमावसेत् ।
अयोध्यामित एव त्वं काले प्रविश लक्ष्मण ॥१६॥
16. mā sma matkāraṇāddevī sumitrā duḥkhamāvaset ,
ayodhyāmita eva tvaṃ kāle praviśa lakṣmaṇa.
16. mā sma matkāraṇāt devī sumitrā duḥkham āvaset
ayodhyām itaḥ eva tvam kāle praviśa lakṣmaṇa
16. lakṣmaṇa matkāraṇāt devī sumitrā duḥkham mā
sma āvaset tvam itaḥ eva kāle ayodhyām praviśa
16. Lakshmana, let not Queen Sumitra experience sorrow because of me. You must enter Ayodhya immediately from this very place.
अहमेको गमिष्यामि सीतया सह दण्डकान् ।
अनाथाया हि नाथस्त्वं कौसल्याया भविष्यसि ॥१७॥
17. ahameko gamiṣyāmi sītayā saha daṇḍakān ,
anāthāyā hi nāthastvaṃ kausalyāyā bhaviṣyasi.
17. aham ekaḥ gamiṣyāmi sītayā saha daṇḍakān
anāthāyāḥ hi nāthaḥ tvam kausalyāyāḥ bhaviṣyasi
17. aham ekaḥ sītayā saha daṇḍakān gamiṣyāmi hi
tvam anāthāyāḥ kausalyāyāḥ nāthaḥ bhaviṣyasi
17. I alone will go to the Dandaka forest with Sita. Indeed, you will be the protector of the helpless Kausalya.
क्षुद्रकर्मा हि कैकेयी द्वेषादन्याय्यमाचरेत् ।
परिदद्या हि धर्मज्ञे भरते मम मातरम् ॥१८॥
18. kṣudrakarmā hi kaikeyī dveṣādanyāyyamācaret ,
paridadyā hi dharmajñe bharate mama mātaram.
18. kṣudrakarmā hi kaikeyī dveṣāt anyāyyam ācaret
paridadyā hi dharmajñe bharate mama mātaram
18. hi kṣudrakarmā kaikeyī dveṣāt anyāyyam ācaret
hi dharmajñe bharate mama mātaram paridadyā
18. For Kaikeyi, whose actions are petty, may indeed act unjustly out of hatred. Therefore, O knower of natural law (dharma), you must entrust my mother (Kausalya) to Bharata.
नूनं जात्यन्तरे कस्मिं स्त्रियः पुत्रैर्वियोजिताः ।
जनन्या मम सौमित्रे तदप्येतदुपस्थितम् ॥१९॥
19. nūnaṃ jātyantare kasmiṃ striyaḥ putrairviyojitāḥ ,
jananyā mama saumitre tadapyetadupasthitam.
19. nūnam jātyantare kasmin striyaḥ putraiḥ viyojitāḥ
jananyā mama saumitre tat api etat upasthitam
19. saumitre nūnam kasmin jātyantare striyaḥ putraiḥ
viyojitāḥ tat api etat mama jananyā upasthitam
19. O son of Sumitra, surely, in some past birth (karma), women were separated from their sons; this very same (fate) has now befallen my mother.
मया हि चिरपुष्टेन दुःखसंवर्धितेन च ।
विप्रायुज्यत कौसल्या फलकाले धिगस्तु माम् ॥२०॥
20. mayā hi cirapuṣṭena duḥkhasaṃvardhitena ca ,
viprāyujyata kausalyā phalakāle dhigastu mām.
20. mayā hi cirapuṣṭena duḥkhasaṃvardhitena ca
viprāyujyata kausalyā phalakāle dhik astu mām
20. kausalyā mayā hi phalakāle viprāyujyata
cirapuṣṭena ca duḥkhasaṃvardhitena dhik astu mām
20. Indeed, Kaushalya was separated [from me] at the time of consequence by this very 'me' who was nourished for a long time and raised with sorrow. Shame on me!
मा स्म सीमन्तिनी का चिज्जनयेत् पुत्रमीदृशम् ।
सौमित्रे यो ऽहमम्बाया दद्मि शोकमनन्तकम् ॥२१॥
21. mā sma sīmantinī kā cijjanayet putramīdṛśam ,
saumitre yo'hamambāyā dadmi śokamanantakam.
21. mā sma sīmantinī kā cit janayet putram īdṛśam
saumitre yaḥ aham ambāyāḥ dadmi śokam anantakam
21. saumitre,
mā sma kā cit sīmantinī īdṛśam putram janayet,
yaḥ aham ambāyāḥ anantakam śokam dadmi
21. O Saumitri (Lakshmana), may no woman ever give birth to such a son as I, who cause unending sorrow to my mother.
मन्ये प्रीतिविशिष्टा सा मत्तो लक्ष्मणसारिका ।
यस्यास्तच्छ्रूयते वाक्यं शुक पादमरेर्दश ॥२२॥
22. manye prītiviśiṣṭā sā matto lakṣmaṇasārikā ,
yasyāstacchrūyate vākyaṃ śuka pādamarerdaśa.
22. manye prītiviśiṣṭā sā mattaḥ lakṣmaṇa sārikā
yasyāḥ tat śrūyate vākyam śuka pādam areḥ daśa
22. lakṣmaṇa,
manye sā sārikā mattaḥ prītiviśiṣṭā,
yasyāḥ tat vākyam śrūyate: śuka,
areḥ pādam daśa
22. O Lakshmana, I consider that female mynah bird to be superior in affection to me, because her words are heard: 'O parrot, bite the enemy's foot!'
शोचन्त्याश्चाल्पभाग्याया न किं चिदुपकुर्वता ।
पुर्त्रेण किमपुत्राया मया कार्यमरिंदम ॥२३॥
23. śocantyāścālpabhāgyāyā na kiṃ cidupakurvatā ,
purtreṇa kimaputrāyā mayā kāryamariṃdama.
23. śocantyāḥ ca alpabhāgyāyāḥ na kim cit upakurvatā
putreṇa kim aputrāyāḥ mayā kāryam ariṃdama
23. ariṃdama,
aputrāyāḥ śocantyāḥ ca alpabhāgyāyāḥ mayā kim cit na upakurvatā putreṇa kim kāryam
23. O subduer of enemies (ariṃdama), what purpose is served by me, a son, who does not render any benefit to his lamenting and unfortunate mother, to one who is as if sonless?
अल्पभाग्या हि मे माता कौसल्या रहिता मया ।
शेते परमदुःखार्ता पतिता शोकसागरे ॥२४॥
24. alpabhāgyā hi me mātā kausalyā rahitā mayā ,
śete paramaduḥkhārtā patitā śokasāgare.
24. alpa-bhāgyā hi me mātā kausalyā rahitā mayā
śete parama-duḥkha-ārtā patitā śoka-sāgare
24. hi me alpa-bhāgyā mātā kausalyā mayā rahitā
parama-duḥkha-ārtā śoka-sāgare patitā śete
24. Indeed, my unfortunate mother Kaushalya, separated from me, lies deeply afflicted by sorrow, having fallen into an ocean of grief.
एको ह्यहमयोध्यां च पृथिवीं चापि लक्ष्मण ।
तरेयमिषुभिः क्रुद्धो ननु वीर्यमकारणम् ॥२५॥
25. eko hyahamayodhyāṃ ca pṛthivīṃ cāpi lakṣmaṇa ,
tareyamiṣubhiḥ kruddho nanu vīryamakāraṇam.
25. ekaḥ hi aham ayodhyām ca pṛthivīm ca api lakṣmaṇa
tareyam iṣubhiḥ kruddhaḥ nanu vīryam akāraṇam
25. lakṣmaṇa ekaḥ hi aham kruddhaḥ iṣubhiḥ ayodhyām
ca pṛthivīm ca api tareyam nanu vīryam akāraṇam
25. Indeed, O Lakshmana, I alone, enraged, could conquer Ayodhya and even the entire earth with my arrows. Is my valor truly without purpose?
अधर्मभय भीतश्च परलोकस्य चानघ ।
तेन लक्ष्मण नाद्याहमात्मानमभिषेचये ॥२६॥
26. adharmabhaya bhītaśca paralokasya cānagha ,
tena lakṣmaṇa nādyāhamātmānamabhiṣecaye.
26. adharma-bhaya bhītaḥ ca para-lokasya ca anagha
tena lakṣmaṇa na adya aham ātmānam abhiṣecaye
26. anagha (lakṣmaṇa) adharma-bhaya-bhītaḥ ca para-lokasya
(bhītaḥ asmi) tena lakṣmaṇa adya aham ātmānam na abhiṣecaye
26. And, O sinless one, being fearful of unrighteousness (adharma) and of the consequences in the afterlife, therefore, O Lakshmana, I will not coronate myself today.
एतदन्यच्च करुणं विलप्य विजने बहु ।
अश्रुपूर्णमुखो रामो निशि तूष्णीमुपाविशत् ॥२७॥
27. etadanyacca karuṇaṃ vilapya vijane bahu ,
aśrupūrṇamukho rāmo niśi tūṣṇīmupāviśat.
27. etat anyat ca karuṇam vilapya vijane bahu
aśru-pūrṇa-mukhaḥ rāmaḥ niśi tūṣṇīm upāviśat
27. rāmaḥ aśru-pūrṇa-mukhaḥ vijane etat ca anyat
ca karuṇam bahu vilapya niśi tūṣṇīm upāviśat
27. Having lamented extensively and pitifully about this and other matters in solitude, Rama, with a face full of tears, sat down silently at night.
विलप्योपरतं रामं गतार्चिषमिवानलम् ।
समुद्रमिव निर्वेगमाश्वासयत लक्ष्मणः ॥२८॥
28. vilapyoparataṃ rāmaṃ gatārciṣamivānalam ,
samudramiva nirvegamāśvāsayata lakṣmaṇaḥ.
28. vilapya uparatam rāmam gata-arciṣam iva analam
samudram iva nirvegam āśvāsayat lakṣmaṇaḥ
28. lakṣmaṇaḥ vilapya uparatam gatārciṣam analam
iva nirvegam samudram iva rāmam āśvāsayat
28. Lakshmana consoled Rama, who had ceased his lamentation, resembling an extinguished fire or a calm, waveless ocean.
ध्रुवमद्य पुरी राम अयोध्या युधिनां वर ।
निष्प्रभा त्वयि निष्क्रान्ते गतचन्द्रेव शर्वरी ॥२९॥
29. dhruvamadya purī rāma ayodhyā yudhināṃ vara ,
niṣprabhā tvayi niṣkrānte gatacandreva śarvarī.
29. dhruvam adya purī rāma ayodhyā yudhinām vara
niṣprabhā tvayi niṣkrānte gata-candrā iva śarvarī
29. rāma yudhinām vara adya dhruvam tvayi niṣkrānte
ayodhyā purī gatacandrā śarvarī iva niṣprabhā
29. O Rama, O best among warriors, certainly today the city of Ayodhya is devoid of luster, just like a night without the moon, now that you have departed.
नैतदौपयिकं राम यदिदं परितप्यसे ।
विषादयसि सीतां च मां चैव पुरुषर्षभ ॥३०॥
30. naitadaupayikaṃ rāma yadidaṃ paritapyase ,
viṣādayasi sītāṃ ca māṃ caiva puruṣarṣabha.
30. na etat aupayikam rāma yat idam paritapyase
viṣādayasi sītām ca mām ca eva puruṣa-ṛṣabha
30. rāma puruṣarṣabha yat idam paritapyase etat
na aupayikam ca sītām ca eva mām viṣādayasi
30. O Rama, O best among men, this suffering you are undergoing is not appropriate. You are distressing both Sita and me.
न च सीता त्वया हीना न चाहमपि राघव ।
मुहूर्तमपि जीवावो जलान्मत्स्याविवोद्धृतौ ॥३१॥
31. na ca sītā tvayā hīnā na cāhamapi rāghava ,
muhūrtamapi jīvāvo jalānmatsyāvivoddhṛtau.
31. na ca sītā tvayā hīnā na ca aham api rāghava
muhūrtam api jīvāvaḥ jalāt matsyau iva uddhṛtau
31. rāghava ca tvayā hīnā sītā na muhūrtam api जीवावः
च अहम् अपि जलात् उद्धृतौ मत्स्यौ इव न जीवावः
31. And neither Sita, deprived of you, nor I, O Raghava, can live even for a moment, just like two fish pulled out of water.
न हि तातं न शत्रुघ्नं न सुमित्रां परंतप ।
द्रष्टुमिच्छेयमद्याहं स्वर्गं वापि त्वया विना ॥३२॥
32. na hi tātaṃ na śatrughnaṃ na sumitrāṃ paraṃtapa ,
draṣṭumiccheyamadyāhaṃ svargaṃ vāpi tvayā vinā.
32. na hi tātam na śatrughnam na sumitrām paraṃtapa |
draṣṭum iccheyam adya aham svargam vā api tvayā vinā
32. paraṃtapa aham adya tvayā vinā tātam na śatrughnam
na sumitrām vā api svargam draṣṭum na hi iccheyam
32. O tormentor of enemies, today I would certainly not wish to see my father, nor Shatrughna, nor Sumitra, nor even heaven without you.
स लक्ष्मणस्योत्तम पुष्कलं वचो निशम्य चैवं वनवासमादरात् ।
समाः समस्ता विदधे परंतपः प्रपद्य धर्मं सुचिराय राघवः ॥३३॥
33. sa lakṣmaṇasyottama puṣkalaṃ vaco niśamya caivaṃ vanavāsamādarāt ,
samāḥ samastā vidadhe paraṃtapaḥ prapadya dharmaṃ sucirāya rāghavaḥ.
33. saḥ lakṣmaṇasya uttamam puṣkalam
vacaḥ niśamya ca evam vanavāsam ādarāt
| samāḥ samastāḥ vidadhe paraṃtapaḥ
prapadya dharmam sucirāya rāghavaḥ
33. rāghavaḥ paraṃtapaḥ saḥ lakṣmaṇasya
uttamam puṣkalam vacaḥ ca evam
niśamya sucirāya dharmam prapadya samastāḥ
samāḥ vanavāsam ādarāt vidadhe
33. Having heard Lakshmana's excellent and comprehensive words, Rama, the tormentor of foes, respectfully undertook the entire period of forest exile, upholding his natural law (dharma) for a long time.
