रावणं निहतं श्रुत्वा राघवेण महात्मना ।
अन्तःपुराद्विनिष्पेतू राक्षस्यः शोककर्शिताः ॥१॥

1. Upon hearing that Ravana had been killed by the great-souled Rama, the demonesses, emaciated by sorrow, rushed out from the inner palace quarters.
वार्यमाणाः सुबहुशो वृष्टन्त्यः क्षितिपांसुषु ।
विमुक्तकेश्यो दुःखार्ता गावो वत्सहता यथा ॥२॥
2. vāryamāṇāḥ subahuśo vṛṣṭantyaḥ kṣitipāṃsuṣu ,
vimuktakeśyo duḥkhārtā gāvo vatsahatā yathā.

2. Though repeatedly restrained, they rolled in the dust of the earth with dishevelled hair, afflicted by grief, just like cows whose calves have been killed.
उत्तरेण विनिष्क्रम्य द्वारेण सह राक्षसैः ।
प्रविश्यायोधनं घोरं विचिन्वन्त्यो हतं पतिम् ॥३॥
3. uttareṇa viniṣkramya dvāreṇa saha rākṣasaiḥ ,
praviśyāyodhanaṃ ghoraṃ vicinvantyo hataṃ patim.

3. Having exited through the northern gate along with the demons, and having entered the dreadful battlefield, they searched for their slain husbands.
आर्यपुत्रेति वादिन्यो हा नाथेति च सर्वशः ।
परिपेतुः कबन्धाङ्कां महीं शोणितकर्दमाम् ॥४॥
4. āryaputreti vādinyo hā nātheti ca sarvaśaḥ ,
paripetuḥ kabandhāṅkāṃ mahīṃ śoṇitakardamām.
4. āryaputra iti vādinyaḥ hā nātha iti ca sarvaśaḥ
paripetuḥ kabandha-aṅkām mahīm śoṇita-kardamām
4. Crying out, 'O noble husband!' and 'Alas, O lord!' in every direction, they roamed over the ground, which was marked by headless trunks and covered in a mire of blood.
ता बाष्पपरिपूर्णाक्ष्यो भर्तृशोकपराजिताः ।
करेण्व इव नर्दन्त्यो विनेदुर्हतयूथपाः ॥५॥
5. tā bāṣpaparipūrṇākṣyo bhartṛśokaparājitāḥ ,
kareṇva iva nardantyo vinedurhatayūthapāḥ.
5. tāḥ bāṣpa-paripūrṇa-akṣyaḥ bhartṛ-śoka-parājitāḥ
kareṇvaḥ iva nardantyaḥ vineduḥ hata-yūthapāḥ
5. Those women, with eyes brimming with tears and overcome by grief for their husbands, wailed loudly like female elephants roaring after their herd leaders have been slain.
ददृशुस्ता महाकायं महावीर्यं महाद्युतिम् ।
रावणं निहतं भूमौ नीलाञ्जनचयोपमम् ॥६॥
6. dadṛśustā mahākāyaṃ mahāvīryaṃ mahādyutim ,
rāvaṇaṃ nihataṃ bhūmau nīlāñjanacayopamam.
6. dadṛśuḥ tāḥ mahā-kāyam mahā-vīryam mahā-dyutim
rāvaṇam nihatam bhūmau nīlāñjana-caya-upamam
6. Those women saw the immensely bodied, greatly valorous, and highly radiant Rāvaṇa, slain on the ground, resembling a heap of blue collyrium.
ताः पतिं सहसा दृष्ट्वा शयानं रणपांसुषु ।
निपेतुस्तस्य गात्रेषु छिन्ना वनलता इव ॥७॥
7. tāḥ patiṃ sahasā dṛṣṭvā śayānaṃ raṇapāṃsuṣu ,
nipetustasya gātreṣu chinnā vanalatā iva.
7. tāḥ patim sahasā dṛṣṭvā śayānam raṇapāṃsuṣu
nipetuḥ tasya gātreṣu chinnāḥ vanalatāḥ iva
7. tāḥ sahasā raṇapāṃsuṣu śayānam patim dṛṣṭvā
chinnāḥ vanalatāḥ iva tasya gātreṣu nipetuḥ
7. Upon suddenly seeing their husband lying in the dust of the battlefield, they fell upon his body, just like cut-down forest creepers.
बहुमानात् परिष्वज्य का चिदेनं रुरोद ह ।
चरणौ का चिदालिङ्ग्य का चित् कण्ठे ऽवलम्ब्य च ॥८॥
8. bahumānāt pariṣvajya kā cidenaṃ ruroda ha ,
caraṇau kā cidāliṅgya kā cit kaṇṭhe'valambya ca.
8. bahumānāt pariṣvajya kā cit enam ruroda ha
caraṇau kā cit āliṅgya kā cit kaṇṭhe avalambya ca
8. kā cit bahumānāt enam pariṣvajya ruroda ha.
kā cit caraṇau āliṅgya.
kā cit kaṇṭhe ca avalambya.
8. One woman, out of deep respect, embraced him and wept. Another clasped his feet, and yet another clung to his neck.
उद्धृत्य च भुजौ का चिद्भूमौ स्म परिवर्तते ।
हतस्य वदनं दृष्ट्वा का चिन्मोहमुपागमत् ॥९॥
9. uddhṛtya ca bhujau kā cidbhūmau sma parivartate ,
hatasya vadanaṃ dṛṣṭvā kā cinmohamupāgamat.
9. uddhṛtya ca bhujau kā cit bhūmau sma parivartate
hatasya vadanam dṛṣṭvā kā cit moham upāgamat
9. kā cit ca bhujau uddhṛtya bhūmau sma parivartate.
kā cit hatasya vadanam dṛṣṭvā moham upāgamat.
9. Another, raising her arms, rolled on the ground. And still another, seeing the face of her slain husband, fell into a swoon (moha).
का चिदङ्के शिरः कृत्वा रुरोद मुखमीक्षती ।
स्नापयन्ती मुखं बाष्पैस्तुषारैरिव पङ्कजम् ॥१०॥
10. kā cidaṅke śiraḥ kṛtvā ruroda mukhamīkṣatī ,
snāpayantī mukhaṃ bāṣpaistuṣārairiva paṅkajam.
10. kā cit aṅke śiraḥ kṛtvā ruroda mukham īkṣatī
snāpayantī mukham bāṣpaiḥ tuṣāraiḥ iva paṅkajam
10. kā cit aṅke śiraḥ kṛtvā,
mukham īkṣatī,
bāṣpaiḥ mukham snāpayantī,
tuṣāraiḥ paṅkajam iva,
ruroda.
10. One woman, placing his head on her lap, wept while gazing at his face, moistening it with her tears as dew moistens a lotus.
एवमार्ताः पतिं दृष्ट्वा रावणं निहतं भुवि ।
चुक्रुशुर्बहुधा शोकाद्भूयस्ताः पर्यदेवयन् ॥११॥
11. evamārtāḥ patiṃ dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇaṃ nihataṃ bhuvi ,
cukruśurbahudhā śokādbhūyastāḥ paryadevayan.
11. evam ārtāḥ patim dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇam nihatam bhuvi |
cukruśuḥ bahudhā śokāt bhūyaḥ tāḥ paryadevayan
11. ārtāḥ evam bhuvi nihatam rāvaṇam patim dṛṣṭvā
tāḥ śokāt bahudhā cukruśuḥ bhūyaḥ paryadevayan
11. Thus, distressed, upon seeing their husband Rāvaṇa slain on the ground, they cried out in various ways due to grief and lamented even more.
येन वित्रासितः शक्रो येन वित्रासितो यमः ।
येन वैश्रवणो राजा पुष्पकेण वियोजितः ॥१२॥
12. yena vitrāsitaḥ śakro yena vitrāsito yamaḥ ,
yena vaiśravaṇo rājā puṣpakeṇa viyojitaḥ.
12. yena vitrāsitaḥ śakraḥ yena vitrāsitaḥ yamaḥ
| yena vaiśravaṇaḥ rājā puṣpakeṇa viyojitaḥ
12. yena śakraḥ vitrāsitaḥ yena yamaḥ vitrāsitaḥ
yena rājā vaiśravaṇaḥ puṣpakeṇa viyojitaḥ
12. He by whom Indra was terrified, by whom Yama was terrified, and by whom King Vaiśravaṇa was dispossessed of his Puṣpaka (aerial chariot).
गन्धर्वाणामृषीणां च सुराणां च महात्मनाम् ।
भयं येन महद्दत्तं सो ऽयं शेते रणे हतः ॥१३॥
13. gandharvāṇāmṛṣīṇāṃ ca surāṇāṃ ca mahātmanām ,
bhayaṃ yena mahaddattaṃ so'yaṃ śete raṇe hataḥ.
13. gandharvāṇām ṛṣīṇām ca surāṇām ca mahātmanām |
bhayam yena mahat dattam saḥ ayam śete raṇe hataḥ
13. yena gandharvāṇām ca ṛṣīṇām ca mahātmanām surāṇām
mahat bhayam dattam saḥ ayam hataḥ raṇe śete
13. That one by whom great fear was given to Gandharvas, to sages, and to the great-souled gods - he now lies slain on the battlefield.
असुरेभ्यः सुरेभ्यो वा पन्नगेभ्यो ऽपि वा तथा ।
न भयं यो विजानाति तस्येदं मानुषाद्भयम् ॥१४॥
14. asurebhyaḥ surebhyo vā pannagebhyo'pi vā tathā ,
na bhayaṃ yo vijānāti tasyedaṃ mānuṣādbhayam.
14. asurebhyaḥ surebhyaḥ vā pannagebhyaḥ api vā tathā
| na bhayam yaḥ vijānāti tasya idam mānuṣāt bhayam
14. yaḥ asurebhyaḥ vā surebhyaḥ vā pannagebhyaḥ api
tathā bhayam na vijānāti tasya idam bhayam mānuṣāt
14. He who knew no fear from either asuras, or from gods (suras), or even from serpents - for him, this fear now comes from a mere human.
अवध्यो देवतानां यस्तथा दानवरक्षसाम् ।
हतः सो ऽयं रणे शेते मानुषेण पदातिना ॥१५॥
15. avadhyo devatānāṃ yastathā dānavarakṣasām ,
hataḥ so'yaṃ raṇe śete mānuṣeṇa padātinā.
15. avadhyaḥ devatānām yaḥ tathā dānavarakṣasām
hataḥ saḥ ayam raṇe śete mānuṣeṇa padātinā
15. He who was invincible by the gods, and similarly by the demons and fiends, that very one lies dead on the battlefield, killed by a human on foot.
यो न शक्यः सुरैर्हन्तुं न यक्षैर्नासुरैस्तथा ।
सो ऽयं कश्चिदिवासत्त्वो मृत्युं मर्त्येन लम्भितः ॥१६॥
16. yo na śakyaḥ surairhantuṃ na yakṣairnāsuraistathā ,
so'yaṃ kaścidivāsattvo mṛtyuṃ martyena lambhitaḥ.
16. yaḥ na śakyaḥ suraiḥ hantum na yakṣaiḥ na asuraiḥ tathā
saḥ ayam kaścit iva asattvaḥ mṛtyum martyena lambhitaḥ
16. He who could not be killed by the gods, nor similarly by yakṣas or asuras (demons), that very one, as if devoid of inner strength, has been made to obtain death by a mortal.
एवं वदन्त्यो बहुधा रुरुदुस्तस्य ताः स्त्रियः ।
भूय एव च दुःखार्ता विलेपुश्च पुनः पुनः ॥१७॥
17. evaṃ vadantyo bahudhā rurudustasya tāḥ striyaḥ ,
bhūya eva ca duḥkhārtā vilepuśca punaḥ punaḥ.
17. evam vadantyaḥ bahudhā ruruduḥ tasya tāḥ striyaḥ
bhūyaḥ eva ca duḥkhā-artāḥ vilepuḥ ca punaḥ punaḥ
17. Speaking thus in many ways, his wives wept. And again, afflicted with sorrow, they lamented repeatedly.
अशृण्वता तु सुहृदां सततं हितवादिनाम् ।
एताः सममिदानीं ते वयमात्मा च पातिताः ॥१८॥
18. aśṛṇvatā tu suhṛdāṃ satataṃ hitavādinām ,
etāḥ samamidānīṃ te vayamātmā ca pātitāḥ.
18. aśṛṇvatā tu suhṛdām satatam hitavādinām
etāḥ samam idānīm te vayam ātmā ca pātitāḥ
18. But because of his not listening to the constantly well-wishing friends, now these (wives), and we, and his own self (ātman) have been equally brought down.
ब्रुवाणो ऽपि हितं वाक्यमिष्टो भ्राता विभीषणः ।
धृष्टं परुषितो मोहात्त्वयात्मवधकाङ्क्षिणा ॥१९॥
19. bruvāṇo'pi hitaṃ vākyamiṣṭo bhrātā vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
dhṛṣṭaṃ paruṣito mohāttvayātmavadhakāṅkṣiṇā.
19. bruvāṇaḥ api hitam vākyam iṣṭaḥ bhrātā vibhīṣaṇaḥ
dhṛṣṭam paruṣitaḥ mohāt tvayā ātmavadhakāṅkṣiṇā
19. tvayā mohāt ātmavadhakāṅkṣiṇā hitam vākyam bruvāṇaḥ
api iṣṭaḥ bhrātā vibhīṣaṇaḥ dhṛṣṭam paruṣitaḥ
19. Even though your beloved brother Vibhīṣaṇa was speaking beneficial words, he was impudently insulted by you, who, out of delusion, desired the destruction of your own self (ātman).
यदि निर्यातिता ते स्यात् सीता रामाय मैथिली ।
न नः स्याद्व्यसनं घोरमिदं मूलहरं महत् ॥२०॥
20. yadi niryātitā te syāt sītā rāmāya maithilī ,
na naḥ syādvyasanaṃ ghoramidaṃ mūlaharaṃ mahat.
20. yadi niryātitā te syāt sītā rāmāya maithilī na
naḥ syāt vyasanam ghoram idam mūlaharam mahat
20. yadi maithilī sītā te rāmāya niryātitā syāt naḥ
idam ghoram mahat mūlaharam vyasanam na syāt
20. If Sītā, the princess of Mithila, had been returned by you to Rāma, then this terrible, great, ruinous misfortune would not have befallen us.
वृत्तकामो भवेद्भ्राता रामो मित्रकुलं भवेत् ।
वयं चाविधवाः सर्वाः सकामा न च शत्रवः ॥२१॥
21. vṛttakāmo bhavedbhrātā rāmo mitrakulaṃ bhavet ,
vayaṃ cāvidhavāḥ sarvāḥ sakāmā na ca śatravaḥ.
21. vṛttakāmaḥ bhavet bhrātā rāmaḥ mitrakulam bhavet
vayam ca avidhavāḥ sarvāḥ sakāmāḥ na ca śatravaḥ
21. bhrātā vṛttakāmaḥ bhavet rāmaḥ mitrakulam bhavet
ca vayam sarvāḥ avidhavāḥ sakāmāḥ ca na śatravaḥ
21. Your brother (Vibhīṣaṇa) would be content, Rāma would become an ally, and all of us (women) would not be widowed; instead, we would be fulfilled and not enemies.
त्वया पुनर्नृशंसेन सीतां संरुन्धता बलात् ।
राक्षसा वयमात्मा च त्रयं तुलं निपातितम् ॥२२॥
22. tvayā punarnṛśaṃsena sītāṃ saṃrundhatā balāt ,
rākṣasā vayamātmā ca trayaṃ tulaṃ nipātitam.
22. tvayā punar nṛśaṃsena sītām saṃrundhatā balāt
rākṣasāḥ vayam ātmā ca trayam tulam nipātitam
22. punar nṛśaṃsena tvayā balāt sītām saṃrundhatā
rākṣasāḥ vayam ātmā ca trayam tulam nipātitam
22. But by you, the cruel one, forcibly confining Sītā, these three - the Rākṣasas, us (women), and your own self (ātman) - have been simultaneously brought to ruin.
न कामकारः कामं वा तव राक्षसपुंगव ।
दैवं चेष्टयते सर्वं हतं दैवेन हन्यते ॥२३॥
23. na kāmakāraḥ kāmaṃ vā tava rākṣasapuṃgava ,
daivaṃ ceṣṭayate sarvaṃ hataṃ daivena hanyate.
23. na kāmakāraḥ kāmam vā tava rākṣasapuṅgava
daivam ceṣṭayate sarvam hatam daivena hanyate
23. rākṣasapuṅgava tava kāmakāraḥ vā kāmam na
daivam sarvam ceṣṭayate daivena hatam hanyate
23. O foremost among the Rākṣasas, neither your own will nor your desire truly governs events. Divine destiny (daivam) directs everything, and what is destined to be struck down is indeed struck down by it.
वानराणां विनाशो ऽयं राक्षसानां च ते रणे ।
तव चैव महाबाहो दैवयोगादुपागतः ॥२४॥
24. vānarāṇāṃ vināśo'yaṃ rākṣasānāṃ ca te raṇe ,
tava caiva mahābāho daivayogādupāgataḥ.
24. vānarāṇām vināśaḥ ayam rākṣasānām ca te raṇe
tava ca eva mahābāho daivayogāt upāgataḥ
24. mahābāho ayam vināśaḥ vānarāṇām rākṣasānām
ca te tava ca eva raṇe daivayogāt upāgataḥ
24. O mighty-armed one, this destruction of the vānaras, of the rākṣasas, and also of you in battle, has come about due to the workings of divine destiny (daivam).
नैवार्थेन न कामेन विक्रमेण न चाज्ञया ।
शक्या दैवगतिर्लोके निवर्तयितुमुद्यता ॥२५॥
25. naivārthena na kāmena vikrameṇa na cājñayā ,
śakyā daivagatirloke nivartayitumudyatā.
25. na eva arthena na kāmena vikrameṇa na ca ājñayā
śakyā daivagatiḥ loke nivartayitum udyatā
25. loke udyatā daivagatiḥ arthena na kāmena na
vikrameṇa na ājñayā ca na nivartayitum śakyā eva
25. Neither by material gain (artha), nor by desire, neither by valor nor by command, can the activated course of divine destiny (daivam) be averted in this world.
विलेपुरेवं दीनास्ता राक्षसाधिपयोषितः ।
कुरर्य इव दुःखार्ता बाष्पपर्याकुलेक्षणाः ॥२६॥
26. vilepurevaṃ dīnāstā rākṣasādhipayoṣitaḥ ,
kurarya iva duḥkhārtā bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇāḥ.
26. vilepuḥ evam dīnāḥ tāḥ rākṣasādhipayoṣitaḥ
kuraryaḥ iva duḥkhārtāḥ bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇāḥ
26. evam tāḥ dīnāḥ rākṣasādhipayoṣitaḥ duḥkhārtāḥ
bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇāḥ kuraryaḥ iva vilepuḥ
26. Thus, those distressed wives of the Rākṣasa lord lamented, their eyes clouded with tears, like ospreys tormented by sorrow.
