एतच्छ्रुत्वा शुभं वाक्यं पितामहसमीरितम् ।
अङ्केनादाय वैदेहीमुत्पपात विभावसुः ॥१॥
1. etacchrutvā śubhaṃ vākyaṃ pitāmahasamīritam ,

1. Having heard this auspicious statement spoken by the Grandfather (Brahmā), Vibhāvasu (Agni), taking Vaidehī (Sita) into his lap, flew upwards.
तरुणादित्यसंकाशां तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणाम् ।
रक्ताम्बरधरां बालां नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजाम् ॥२॥
2. taruṇādityasaṃkāśāṃ taptakāñcanabhūṣaṇām ,
raktāmbaradharāṃ bālāṃ nīlakuñcitamūrdhajām.

2. [Sita], resembling the rising sun, adorned with ornaments of molten gold, wearing red garments, a young woman with dark, curly hair.
अक्लिष्टमाल्याभरणां तथा रूपां मनस्विनीम् ।
ददौ रामाय वैदेहीमङ्के कृत्वा विभावसुः ॥३॥
3. akliṣṭamālyābharaṇāṃ tathā rūpāṃ manasvinīm ,
dadau rāmāya vaidehīmaṅke kṛtvā vibhāvasuḥ.
3. akliṣṭamālyābharaṇām tathā rūpām manasvinīm
dadau rāmāya vaidehīm aṅke kṛtvā vibhāvasuḥ

3. The fire god (vibhāvasu), having placed Vaidehi – adorned with unfaded garlands and ornaments, possessing such beauty, and noble-minded – on his lap, gave her to Rama.
अब्रवीच्च तदा रामं साक्षी लोकस्य पावकः ।
एषा ते राम वैदेही पापमस्या न विद्यते ॥४॥
4. abravīcca tadā rāmaṃ sākṣī lokasya pāvakaḥ ,
eṣā te rāma vaidehī pāpamasyā na vidyate.
4. abravīt ca tadā rāmam sākṣī lokasya pāvakaḥ
eṣā te rāma vaidehī pāpam asyā na vidyate
4. tadā ca lokasya sākṣī pāvakaḥ rāmam abravīt
rāma eṣā te vaidehī asyā pāpam na vidyate
4. And then, Agni, the witness of the world, said to Rama: "O Rama, this is your Vaidehi; there is no fault (pāpa) in her."
नैव वाचा न मनसा नानुध्यानान्न चक्षुषा ।
सुवृत्ता वृत्तशौण्डीरा न त्वामतिचचार ह ॥५॥
5. naiva vācā na manasā nānudhyānānna cakṣuṣā ,
suvṛttā vṛttaśauṇḍīrā na tvāmaticacāra ha.
5. na eva vācā na manasā na anudhyānāt na cakṣuṣā
suvṛttā vṛttaśauṇḍīrā na tvām aticacāra ha
5. ha suvṛttā vṛttaśauṇḍīrā na eva vācā na manasā
na anudhyānāt na cakṣuṣā tvām na aticacāra
5. Indeed, she, being of good conduct and glorious in her virtuous character, has not transgressed against you, neither by word, nor by thought, nor by contemplation, nor by sight.
रावणेनापनीतैषा वीर्योत्सिक्तेन रक्षसा ।
त्वया विरहिता दीना विवशा निर्जनाद्वनात् ॥६॥
6. rāvaṇenāpanītaiṣā vīryotsiktena rakṣasā ,
tvayā virahitā dīnā vivaśā nirjanādvanāt.
6. rāvaṇena apanītā eṣā vīryotsiktena rakṣasā
tvayā virahitā dīnā vivaśā nirjanāt vanāt
6. vīryotsiktena rāvaṇena rakṣasā eṣā apanītā
tvayā virahitā dīnā vivaśā nirjanāt vanāt
6. This Vaidehi was abducted by the demon (rākṣasa) Rāvaṇa, who was arrogant with power. Separated from you, she was helpless and distressed in the desolate forest.
रुद्धा चान्तःपुरे गुप्ता त्वक्चित्ता त्वत्परायणा ।
रक्षिता राक्षसी संघैर्विकृतैर्घोरदर्शनैः ॥७॥
7. ruddhā cāntaḥpure guptā tvakcittā tvatparāyaṇā ,
rakṣitā rākṣasī saṃghairvikṛtairghoradarśanaiḥ.
7. ruddhā ca antaḥpure guptā tvatcittā tvatparāyaṇā
rakṣitā rākṣasī saṅghaiḥ vikṛtaiḥ ghoradarśanaiḥ
7. Confined and concealed within the inner palace, her attention fixed solely on you and devoted to you, she was guarded by hordes of monstrous, terrifying female demons.
प्रलोभ्यमाना विविधं भर्त्स्यमाना च मैथिली ।
नाचिन्तयत तद् रक्षस्त्वद्गतेनान्तरात्मना ॥८॥
8. pralobhyamānā vividhaṃ bhartsyamānā ca maithilī ,
nācintayata tad rakṣastvadgatenāntarātmanā.
8. pralobhyamānā vividham bhartsyamānā ca maithilī
na acintayata tat rakṣaḥ tvatgatena antarātmanā
8. Though being enticed in various ways and threatened, Maithili (Sītā) did not heed that demon, her inner self (ātman) being completely directed towards you.
विशुद्धभावां निष्पापां प्रतिगृह्णीष्व राघव ।
न किं चिदभिधातव्यमहमाज्ञापयामि ते ॥९॥
9. viśuddhabhāvāṃ niṣpāpāṃ pratigṛhṇīṣva rāghava ,
na kiṃ cidabhidhātavyamahamājñāpayāmi te.
9. viśuddhabhāvām niṣpāpām pratigṛhṇīṣva rāghava
na kiṃ cit abhidhātavyam aham ājñāpayāmi te
9. Accept her, O Rāghava, for she is pure-hearted and sinless. Nothing at all should be said (against this); I command you.
एवमुक्तो महातेजा धृतिमान्दृढविक्रमः ।
अब्रवीत्त्रिदशश्रेष्ठं रामो धर्मभृतां वरः ॥१०॥
10. evamukto mahātejā dhṛtimāndṛḍhavikramaḥ ,
abravīttridaśaśreṣṭhaṃ rāmo dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ.
10. evam uktaḥ mahātejāḥ dhṛtimān dṛḍhavikramaḥ
abravīt tridaśaśreṣṭham rāmaḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
10. Thus addressed, Rāma, who possessed great brilliance, steadfastness, and firm prowess, and was the foremost among those upholding the natural law (dharma), spoke to the chief of the gods.
अवश्यं त्रिषु लोकेषु सीता पावनमर्हति ।
दीर्घकालोषिता चेयं रावणान्तःपुरे शुभा ॥११॥
11. avaśyaṃ triṣu lokeṣu sītā pāvanamarhati ,
dīrghakāloṣitā ceyaṃ rāvaṇāntaḥpure śubhā.
11. avaśyam triṣu lokeṣu sītā pāvanam arhati
dīrghakāloṣitā ca iyam rāvaṇāntaḥpure śubhā
11. Sita undoubtedly merits purification throughout the three worlds, for this auspicious lady has indeed resided for a long time in Ravana's inner palace.
बालिशः खलु कामात्मा रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
इति वक्ष्यन्ति मां सन्तो जानकीमविशोध्य हि ॥१२॥
12. bāliśaḥ khalu kāmātmā rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ,
iti vakṣyanti māṃ santo jānakīmaviśodhya hi.
12. bāliśaḥ khalu kāmātmā rāmaḥ daśarathātmajaḥ
iti vakṣyanti mām santaḥ jānakīm aviśodhya hi
12. For, if I do not purify Janaki (Sita), good people will indeed say of me, 'Rama, the son of Dasaratha, is foolish and driven by desire (kāmātmā).'
अनन्यहृदयां भक्तां मच्चित्तपरिरक्षणीम् ।
अहमप्यवगच्छामि मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम् ॥१३॥
13. ananyahṛdayāṃ bhaktāṃ maccittaparirakṣaṇīm ,
ahamapyavagacchāmi maithilīṃ janakātmajām.
13. ananyahṛdayām bhaktām maccittaparirakṣaṇīm
aham api avagacchāmi maithilīm janakātmajām
13. I myself know Maithili, the daughter of Janaka, to be one whose heart is solely devoted to me, loyal, and protective of my feelings.
प्रत्ययार्थं तु लोकानां त्रयाणां सत्यसंश्रयः ।
उपेक्षे चापि वैदेहीं प्रविशन्तीं हुताशनम् ॥१४॥
14. pratyayārthaṃ tu lokānāṃ trayāṇāṃ satyasaṃśrayaḥ ,
upekṣe cāpi vaidehīṃ praviśantīṃ hutāśanam.
14. pratyayārtham tu lokānām trayāṇām satyasaṃśrayaḥ
upekṣe ca api vaidehīm praviśantīm hutāśanam
14. But to establish conviction for the three worlds, I, who am devoted to truth, will permit Vaidehi to enter the fire.
इमामपि विशालाक्षीं रक्षितां स्वेन तेजसा ।
रावणो नातिवर्तेत वेलामिव महोदधिः ॥१५॥
15. imāmapi viśālākṣīṃ rakṣitāṃ svena tejasā ,
rāvaṇo nātivarteta velāmiva mahodadhiḥ.
15. imām api viśālākṣīm rakṣitām svena tejasā
rāvaṇaḥ na ativarteta velām iva mahodadhiḥ
15. imām viśālākṣīm svena tejasā rakṣitām api
rāvaṇaḥ velām mahodadhiḥ iva na ativarteta
15. Even Ravana would not be able to transgress this wide-eyed woman, protected as she is by her own inherent power, just as the great ocean does not transgress its natural boundary.
न हि शक्तः स दुष्टात्मा मनसापि हि मैथिलीम् ।
प्रधर्षयितुमप्राप्तां दीप्तामग्निशिखामिव ॥१६॥
16. na hi śaktaḥ sa duṣṭātmā manasāpi hi maithilīm ,
pradharṣayitumaprāptāṃ dīptāmagniśikhāmiva.
16. na hi śaktaḥ saḥ duṣṭātmā manasā api hi maithilīm
pradharṣayitum aprāptām dīptām agniśikhām iva
16. hi saḥ duṣṭātmā manasā api hi aprāptām dīptām
agniśikhām iva maithilīm pradharṣayitum na śaktaḥ
16. Indeed, that evil-minded one (duṣṭātmā) is not capable, even in his mind, of violating Maithili, who is as unapproachable as a blazing flame of fire.
नेयमर्हति चैश्वर्यं रावणान्तःपुरे शुभा ।
अनन्या हि मया सीतां भास्करेण प्रभा यथा ॥१७॥
17. neyamarhati caiśvaryaṃ rāvaṇāntaḥpure śubhā ,
ananyā hi mayā sītāṃ bhāskareṇa prabhā yathā.
17. na iyam arhati ca aiśvaryam rāvaṇāntaḥpure śubhā
ananyā hi mayā sītām bhāskareṇa prabhā yathā
17. iyam śubhā rāvaṇāntaḥpure aiśvaryam ca na arhati
hi sītām mayā ananyā bhāskareṇa prabhā yathā
17. And this auspicious woman (Sita) does not deserve to hold any position of authority in Ravana's inner palace. Indeed, Sita is inseparable from me, just as radiance is from the sun.
विशुद्धा त्रिषु लोकेषु मैथिली जनकात्मजा ।
न हि हातुमियं शक्या कीर्तिरात्मवता यथा ॥१८॥
18. viśuddhā triṣu lokeṣu maithilī janakātmajā ,
na hi hātumiyaṃ śakyā kīrtirātmavatā yathā.
18. viśuddhā triṣu lokeṣu maithilī janakātmajā
na hi hātum iyam śakyā kīrtiḥ ātmavatā yathā
18. maithilī janakātmajā triṣu lokeṣu viśuddhā
hi iyam hātum na śakyā ātmavatā kīrtiḥ yathā
18. Maithili, the daughter of Janaka, is completely pure in all three worlds. Indeed, this woman cannot be abandoned, just as a self-possessed person (ātmavatā) cannot abandon their reputation.
अवश्यं च मया कार्यं सर्वेषां वो वचो हितम् ।
स्निग्धानां लोकमान्यानामेवं च ब्रुवतां हितम् ॥१९॥
19. avaśyaṃ ca mayā kāryaṃ sarveṣāṃ vo vaco hitam ,
snigdhānāṃ lokamānyānāmevaṃ ca bruvatāṃ hitam.
19. avaśyam ca mayā kāryam sarveṣām vaḥ vacaḥ hitam
snigdhānām lokamānyānām evam ca bruvatām hitam
19. mayā sarveṣām vaḥ snigdhānām lokamānyānām evam
ca bruvatām hitam vacaḥ ca avaśyam kāryam
19. Indeed, I must carry out the beneficial advice of all of you, who are affectionate, respected by the people, and speak for my welfare.
इतीदमुक्त्वा वचनं महाबलैः प्रशस्यमानः स्वकृतेन कर्मणा ।
समेत्य रामः प्रियया महाबलः सुखं सुखार्हो ऽनुबभूव राघवः ॥२०॥
20. itīdamuktvā vacanaṃ mahābalaiḥ praśasyamānaḥ svakṛtena karmaṇā ,
sametya rāmaḥ priyayā mahābalaḥ sukhaṃ sukhārho'nubabhūva rāghavaḥ.
20. iti idam uktvā vacanam mahābalaiḥ
praśasyamānaḥ svakṛtena karmaṇā
sametya rāmaḥ priyayā mahābalaḥ
sukham sukhārhaḥ anubabhūva rāghavaḥ
20. iti idam vacanam uktvā mahābalaḥ
svakṛtena karmaṇā mahābalaiḥ
praśasyamānaḥ sukhārhaḥ rāghavaḥ rāmaḥ
priyayā sametya sukham anubabhūva
20. Having spoken these words, the mighty Rāma (Rāghava), praised by powerful beings for his own deeds (karma), reunited with his beloved and, truly worthy of happiness, experienced great joy.
