Then, after a considerable period, when a delightful spring arrived, the king's mind was set on performing a Vedic ritual (yajña).
ततः प्रसाद्य शिरसा तं विप्रं देववर्णिनम् ।
यज्ञाय वरयामास संतानार्थं कुलस्य वै ॥२॥

2. tataḥ prasādya śirasā taṃ vipraṃ devavarṇinam ,

Then, reverently bowing his head, he propitiated that brahmin (vipra) who was like a god, and invited him to officiate a Vedic ritual (yajña) for the sake of progeny for his lineage.
तथेति च स राजानमुवाच च सुसत्कृतः ।
संभाराः संभ्रियन्तां ते तुरगश्च विमुच्यताम् ॥३॥

Being well-honored, he then said to the king, "So be it. Let the necessary provisions be gathered, and let your sacrificial horse be released."

4. tato rājābravīdvākyaṃ sumantraṃ mantrisattamam ,

Then the king addressed Sumantra, the most excellent of his ministers, saying, "Sumantra, quickly summon the priests (ṛtvij) who are learned in the Vedas (brahman)."

Then Sumantra, swift in action, having gone quickly, he assembled all those Brahmins who were accomplished in the Vedas.
सुयज्ञं वामदेवं च जाबालिमथ काश्यपम् ।
पुरोहितं वसिष्ठं च ये चान्ये द्विजसत्तमाः ॥६॥

6. suyajñaṃ vāmadevaṃ ca jābālimatha kāśyapam ,

(He assembled) Suyajña, Vāmadeva, Jābāli, and Kāśyapa; also the chief priest (purohita) Vasiṣṭha, and other excellent Brahmins (dvijasattama).
तान्पूजयित्वा धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथस्तदा ।
इदं धर्मार्थसहितं श्लक्ष्णं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥७॥

7. tānpūjayitvā dharmātmā rājā daśarathastadā ,

Then, King Daśaratha, whose soul was devoted to righteousness (dharma), honored them and spoke these gentle words, which were beneficial for both his intrinsic nature (dharma) and his purpose (artha).
मम लालप्यमानस्य पुत्रार्थं नास्ति वै सुखम् ।
तदर्थं हयमेधेन यक्ष्यामीति मतिर्मम ॥८॥

8. mama lālapyamānasya putrārthaṃ nāsti vai sukham ,
tadarthaṃ hayamedhena yakṣyāmīti matirmama.

While I am lamenting for a son, there is indeed no happiness for me. Therefore, 'I will perform a horse Vedic ritual (yajña)' – this is my intention.
तदहं यष्टुमिच्छामि शास्त्रदृष्टेन कर्मणा ।
ऋषिपुत्रप्रभावेन कामान्प्राप्स्यामि चाप्यहम् ॥९॥

9. tadahaṃ yaṣṭumicchāmi śāstradṛṣṭena karmaṇā ,
ṛṣiputraprabhāvena kāmānprāpsyāmi cāpyaham.

tat aham yaṣṭum icchāmi śāstradṛṣṭena karmaṇā

Therefore, I desire to perform a ritual (karma) as prescribed by the scriptures. And by the power of the sage's son, I shall also obtain my desires.

वसिष्ठप्रमुखाः सर्वे पार्थिवस्य मुखाच्च्युतम् ॥१०॥

10. tataḥ sādhviti tadvākyaṃ brāhmaṇāḥ pratyapūjayan ,

tataḥ sādhu iti tat vākyam brāhmaṇāḥ prati apūjayan

Then, all the Brahmins, led by Vasishtha, applauded that statement which had issued from the king's mouth, saying, 'Excellent!'
ऋश्यशृङ्गपुरोगाश्च प्रत्यूचुर्नृपतिं तदा ।
संभाराः संभ्रियन्तां ते तुरगश्च विमुच्यताम् ॥११॥

11. ṛśyaśṛṅgapurogāśca pratyūcurnṛpatiṃ tadā ,

Then, Rishyashringa and his followers replied to the king, 'Let your provisions be gathered, and let the horse be released!'
सर्वथा प्राप्यसे पुत्रांश्चतुरो ऽमितविक्रमान् ।
यस्य ते धार्मिकी बुद्धिरियं पुत्रार्थमागता ॥१२॥

12. sarvathā prāpyase putrāṃścaturo'mitavikramān ,
yasya te dhārmikī buddhiriyaṃ putrārthamāgatā.

You shall certainly obtain four sons of immeasurable valor, because your mind, which is righteous (dharmikī buddhi), has been directed towards the purpose of obtaining sons.
ततः प्रीतो ऽभवद् राजा श्रुत्वा तद्द्विजभाषितम् ।
अमात्यांश्चाब्रवीद् राजा हर्षेणेदं शुभाक्षरम् ॥१३॥

13. tataḥ prīto'bhavad rājā śrutvā taddvijabhāṣitam ,

Then the king became pleased upon hearing the words spoken by that Brahmin (dvija). And the king, filled with joy, spoke these auspicious words to his ministers.
गुरूणां वचनाच्छीघ्रं संभाराः संभ्रियन्तु मे ।
समर्थाधिष्ठितश्चाश्वः सोपाध्यायो विमुच्यताम् ॥१४॥

14. gurūṇāṃ vacanācchīghraṃ saṃbhārāḥ saṃbhriyantu me ,

14.

14.
Following the instructions of the preceptors (guru), let the necessary preparations be quickly gathered for me. And let the sacrificial horse, supervised by capable individuals, be released along with its attendant.
सरय्वाश्चोत्तरे तीरे यज्ञभूमिर्विधीयताम् ।
शान्तयश्चाभिवर्धन्तां यथाकल्पं यथाविधि ॥१५॥

15. sarayvāścottare tīre yajñabhūmirvidhīyatām ,
śāntayaścābhivardhantāṃ yathākalpaṃ yathāvidhi.

And let the ritual ground (yajña-bhūmi) be prepared on the northern bank of the Sarayu (river). And let the peace rituals (śāntayaḥ) be performed and flourish according to the prescribed rules and proper method.
शक्यः कर्तुमयं यज्ञः सर्वेणापि महीक्षिता ।
नापराधो भवेत् कष्टो यद्यस्मिन् क्रतुसत्तमे ॥१६॥

16. śakyaḥ kartumayaṃ yajñaḥ sarveṇāpi mahīkṣitā ,
nāparādho bhavet kaṣṭo yadyasmin kratusattame.

ayam yajñaḥ sarveṇa api mahīkṣitā kartum śakyaḥ
yadi asmin kratusattame kaṣṭaḥ aparādhaḥ na bhavet
yadi asmin kratusattame kaṣṭaḥ aparādhaḥ na bhavet
16.
This Vedic ritual (yajña) can be performed by any king. No difficult transgression would occur if it is performed in this excellent ritual (kratu).
छिद्रं हि मृगयन्ते ऽत्र विद्वांसो ब्रह्मराक्षसाः ।
विधिहीनस्य यज्ञस्य सद्यः कर्ता विनश्यति ॥१७॥
विधिहीनस्य यज्ञस्य सद्यः कर्ता विनश्यति ॥१७॥
17. chidraṃ hi mṛgayante'tra vidvāṃso brahmarākṣasāḥ ,
vidhihīnasya yajñasya sadyaḥ kartā vinaśyati.

chidram hi mṛgayante atra vidvāṃsaḥ brahmarākṣasāḥ

Indeed, the learned Brahmarākṣasas here search for a flaw. The performer of a ritual (yajña) lacking proper procedure perishes immediately.
तद् यथा विधिपूर्वं मे क्रतुरेष समाप्यते ।
तथाविधानं क्रियतां समर्थाः करणेष्विह ॥१८॥
तथाविधानं क्रियतां समर्थाः करणेष्विह ॥१८॥
18. tad yathā vidhipūrvaṃ me kratureṣa samāpyate ,
tathāvidhānaṃ kriyatāṃ samarthāḥ karaṇeṣviha.
tathāvidhānaṃ kriyatāṃ samarthāḥ karaṇeṣviha.

tat yathā vidhipūrvam me kratuḥ eṣa samāpyate
tathāvidhānam kriyatām samarthāḥ karaṇeṣu iha
tathāvidhānam kriyatām samarthāḥ karaṇeṣu iha

tat yathā me eṣa kratuḥ vidhipūrvam samāpyate
tathāvidhānam kriyatām iha karaṇeṣu samarthāḥ
tathāvidhānam kriyatām iha karaṇeṣu samarthāḥ
18.
Therefore, just as this ritual (kratu) of mine is properly concluded according to the rules, let the arrangements be made accordingly, for you are capable in these matters.
तथेति च ततः सर्वे मन्त्रिणः प्रत्यपूजयन् ।
पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य तद्वाक्यं यथाज्ञप्तमकुर्वत ॥१९॥

19. tatheti ca tataḥ sarve mantriṇaḥ pratyapūjayan ,
pārthivendrasya tadvākyaṃ yathājñaptamakurvata.

"So be it!" Saying this, all the ministers then honored the king's words and carried out what had been commanded.

20. tato dvijāste dharmajñamastuvanpārthivarṣabham ,
anujñātāstataḥ sarve punarjagmuryathāgatam.

Then those Brahmins (dvija), having been permitted, praised the king, who knew the (natural) law (dharma), and all of them returned as they had come.
गतानां तु द्विजातीनां मन्त्रिणस्तान्नराधिपः ।
विसर्जयित्वा स्वं वेश्म प्रविवेश महाद्युतिः ॥२१॥

21. gatānāṃ tu dvijātīnāṃ mantriṇastānnarādhipaḥ ,

But when those twice-born ones had departed, the greatly radiant king dismissed those ministers and entered his own house.
